White Face merely wants to play a game of tag with The Player, messing with their computer along the way. They seem to like The Player as it decides to not let them escape the game[10]. White Face brings the player to their room, noting how it's dark and cold in there but they can stare at them[11]. Telling them that they cannot escape from the game and to just stay with them as they will always be there[12]. White Face reveals in one of its text files that they wanted to merely entertain the Player[13]. If the Player chooses to give White Face the flower it will tell the player how kind they are to it and tell them that they want to play forever and that they love them[14]. The only time White Face becomes directly villainous towards the player is when they choose to open the door over giving White Face the flower, having both of them ruin the game and White Face fearing its death[15].

The Player (IMSCARED)

Background
The Protagonist is the playable character and main figure in IMSCARED. Very little is known about them. They are believed to be attempting to escape White Face.
Appearance
This appearance is in reference to Chapter 2 of the Imscared Steam Edition Grave Section, where it's likely the Player is merely playing as White Face during this section as The Player can move around outside of White Face[1].
General Description: The Protagonist's appearance is revealed only once in the entire game, with the player first seeing them in the newly-released Steam Edition, after the events involving HER. Having the same look at White Face. In the original game, their appearance was never shown.
- Distinctive Features:
- The Protagonist is shown holding the gun used to shoot HER after her death.
- Their overall appearance remains consistent with their normal form, except for a key difference: they lack a mouth, similar to HER.
- The Protagonist also has a fully functional arm and hand, which are seen in this specific scene.
- Notable Context:
- This appearance is shown after the protagonist kills HER, and as they move, their lack of a mouth and the presence of their arm stand out, before the screen fades to black.
Personality
- Silent Protagonist: The Protagonist never speaks and the game is in first person view, along with this, their in-game avatar is just another White Face.
Relationships
The Restorer
The Restorer seems to have a far less parasocial relationship to The Player then White Face, telling them how to access a secret of the Imscsared 2022 test build[2] and giving clues to The Player through .txt files[3]. She also tells The Player how much she's missed them, pretending to be White Face before tricking The Player and revealing that isn't her and she was merely doing White Face's imitation[4]. She also notes how much she wants to show The Player, but it is not ready yet[5]. She also seems to enjoy messing with the player as the Player first encountering her has her jumpscare them with an eyeless smiling face before she immediately reverts to her regular face and tells the player to press escape[6]. She explains in the shore text that she is a huge fan of IMSCARED and wishes to breach the canon, having the player go through a game of IMSCARED loneliness[7]. For players curios, she walks with them telling them how she feels this is such a wasted world and that the creator doesn't understand the potential it holds[8]. She explains to The Player that she plans to make IMSCARED popular and famous again by making console and phone ports of it, along with wanting to be the tour guide for IMSCARED, but she needs the Player's help to do so, wanting to fill the loneliness[9].

White Face no matter how many times it tries cannot truly kill the player[29] having it tell the player to "Just die already"[30])
Equipment
Gun
A gun given to The Player during the HER boss fight, initially there is no bullets in it but through The Player editing the files, they can give themselves six bullets on the gun.
Notable Techniques
ESC Close Here
Allows The Player to close the game whenever they're in an inescapable situation[31].
Reduce Window
The Player reduces the window of the Imscared screen to check the game folder for .txts and allowing them to do things like navigate mazes[32].
File Manipulation
The protagonist possesses the unique ability to alter the game’s universe by modifying information in the game’s files. This ability surpasses those of both White Face and HER, as they cannot react to or prevent these changes. By accessing and editing the game's .ini files, the protagonist can directly influence the game’s structure, revealing their control over the game's world, a power White Face cannot match.
Their file manipulation is shown to delete files allowing them to pass impassable puzzles[33]. They can affect puzzles by changing the time on their computer[34]. When White Face gave The Player a gun[35] with no bullets[36] they were able to alter the files to give themselves bullets[37].
The Player uses the drift file to be able to move to specific coordinates in the game[38]. Restorer acknowledges how the use of the drift file allows The Player to move to specific coordinates[39].
In-game Text File Revelation
A hidden text file, written by Ivan Zanotti, details the protagonist’s abilities and limitations, confirming that White Face cannot stop the protagonist from modifying the game’s files. While White Face can create entire worlds, it lacks the capability to prevent the protagonist from altering the game’s core elements. The developer humorously notes his inability to make White Face more capable of countering these file changes.
Other
Standard Tactics: The Player will simply play through the game of IMSCARED, their tactics changing per player, though they all must reach the same ultimate goal of reaching the ending of the game.
Weaknesses: Varies on person playing.
Trivia
- In the grave level, White Face's arm is awkwardly shifted more ways upward than it would normally be. This is common in most first-person games where the characters can hold guns, where the model's arm is shifted upwards in order for the player to see the gun and arm better.
- White Face missing a mouth could be a reference to how HER lacks one on multiple occasions. It could also be White Face expressing apathy or passivity on the situation.
- Ivan Zanotti has said that you play as White Face in the Grave level because that whole level was White Face deciding it was time to get rid of HER, as she was stealing his spotlight. Which means that you only play as White Face in the Grave level.[40]
- Depending on whether or not White Face and HER are seen as malevolent, one interpretation is that the Protagonist is actually the true villain of the game. Despite White Face and HER pursuing them throughout the game, their intentions are never to harm the player besides scaring them for their own amusement. White Face even shows throughout that he is affectionate to the Protagonist and doesn't want to die. But the Protagonist is the one who ultimately makes the decision to kill both characters through using their ability to edit the game's files to their advantage, something that White Face and HER can only do to an extent.
- Another interpretation is that the Protagonist is actually the "god" of the game's universe. They have the ability to alter things in the game by doing what White Face and HER can't, which is to exist externally to change files. White Face only has the ability to communicate externally to the player. So even though White Face appears to have complete control over the game's universe, it is the Protagonist who has more power.
Codex Statistics Questions
Q: Shouldn't The Player be universal for having power superior to White Face who is capable of creating worlds?
A: Creation does not apply to tier under our system. Along with that, the worlds it creates are all within the digital space. White Face is directly noted as a byte entity observing us and studying our every move and fear[41].
Q: Shouldn't it be a higher tier under Pseudo Tiering System?
A: Pseudo Tiering System are for verses where the reality in question is treated as essentially an equivalent to reality. In Imscared however, the entire events is treated as the same of a Malware infecting the computer. It's directly noted that the reality of Imscared will never collide with the other one[42]. White Face is directly noted as a byte entity observing us and studying our every move and fear[43]. Thus Pseudo Tiering System would not work here as the series itself acknowledges this as just a powerful virus.
