The Anomaly (also known as "The Player") is the being that controls The Human during most of the time in Undertale. Whether the player decides to do Genocide, Neutral, or Pacifist, The Human herself/himself cannot refuse it. Only during some instances does The Human ever refuse it. They are shown to be canonical by the end of the Genocide route when Chara is talking directly to them when they re-open the game and when Sans mentions them in battle.

Before the game begins, the player is prompted to name the first human, who is not the main character. The connection between the protagonist and that fallen human is only fully explained during the epilogue of the True Pacifist Route, and more vaguely in the Genocide Route. Throughout most of the game, characters refer to the protagonist simply as "human" or "child." Flowey is the only character who calls the protagonist by the chosen name, and this happens in both the Genocide and True Pacifist routes. Asriel also uses the name in the True Lab tapes and before the final battle. The protagonist's Level of Violence is tied to the number of monsters killed, and higher LV makes it easier to harm others. Both LV and EXP are shown under the chosen name in the stats menu. At the end of the Genocide Route, the protagonist no longer needs a SOUL to attack. The player loses control as the protagonist automatically kills Asgore and Flowey, and the bullet board does not appear during either fight. The fallen human then speaks directly to the player, breaking the fourth wall in a way that could be addressed to either the player or the protagonist. The player usually directs the protagonist's actions, but there are moments in the Neutral and Genocide routes where control is temporarily taken away. In the Neutral Route, the protagonist acts on their own in several scenes: they take Toriel's hand without being prompted, allow her to lead them to the guest room, and let her guide them back upstairs if they try to enter the basement without asking for the exit. During Sans's introduction, the protagonist crosses the bridge on their own, and later hides behind a lamp when told. They also follow Papyrus to his house, try to catch the Annoying Dog, and follow Undyne during her cooking lesson. In the Throne Room, the protagonist walks forward alone, alerting Asgore. Before fighting Photoshop Flowey, the protagonist steps forward as if to challenge him. In the Genocide Route, the protagonist refuses to hide behind the lamp, ignores Papyrus during puzzles, and walks forward constantly during his confrontation, which Papyrus notices. They turn and approach Monster Kid aggressively before fighting Undyne the Undying, and Mettaton notices their eagerness to fight. During Sans's judgement, the protagonist steps forward to provoke him. After Sans dodges the player's final attack, the protagonist lands the killing blow on their own, dealing massive damage. In the Throne Room, they force a fight with Asgore without player input. |
"The Anomaly" comes from Sans noting there's a massive anomaly in the time-space continuum[1].
The Anomaly makes no real physical appearance as they're the player does it would be based off whatever player is playing.
Chara and The Anomaly's interactions mostly come from the genocide route. Their warped idea of The Anomaly is that they're a "partner" that they will be together with forever[2]. Even if the Anomaly refuses to accept destroying the world they will simply note they were not the one in control and destroy everything.
The only way to get back to the world is to offer Chara their soul. Which makes it where they will always take over and ruin a true pacifist ending.
It isn't fully known if The Human is even aware of the Anomaly's existence or not, as even Flowey begs the Anomaly to not do a true reset and just let The Human be happy and live their life.
Unlike Kris too, The Human seems to not mind the control done over them, even when it requires them to do ridiculous things like flirt with Toriel and then call them mom afterwards.
Kris is a polar opposite to The Human as they will act on their own multiple times. Their overall do not seem to like The Anomaly, and that dislike is furthered during a weird route. Outright kicking them while in a trash can for things they've done[3].

The Anomaly possesses Determination capable of doing a True Reset, giving them[14] Standard Determination & Filled With Determination:
These are the natural applications of determination users that they pertain even when one with greater determination exists.
These are determination users filled with determination, having the greatest amount compared to anyone else[18] being at their strongest mentally and physically during this[19], where their desires for the world override other determination users[17].
The Human being under the possession of The Anomaly is directly noted by Flowey himself when he tells the Anomaly they have the power to rip everyone from the timeline and reset all progress back to 0, with him begging them to just let the human be happy and live their life[37]. The Human is effectively their only way of interacting with the Undertale reality.
Chara is a direct avatar of The Anomaly, their name is what The Anomaly's name is.
Kris is the host The Anomaly uses in Deltarune, unlikely the previous two host, Kris actively fights against The Anomaly's control.
Standard Tactics: The Anomaly is a wildcard who will either possess a host, or do actions such as starting and stopping timelines as noted by Sans.
Weaknesses: Needs a host in order to interact with the Undertale and Deltarune realities.
Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:
On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[38] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[39].
It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[40] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[41].
Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[42] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[42]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[42].
Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[43]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[43] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[43]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[44].
Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[45].
In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[46].
This is an argument that queestions the existence of the Anomaly in Undertale, claiming anytime a character is talking about The Anomaly they're either referring to Frisk or that the character doesn't exist at all.
This is incorrect for one major scene that introduces the concept of the true reset, where Flowey outright notes they are the one last threat with the power to erase everything[47]. Flowey even differentiaties Frisk from the "YOU" figure he's referring too[48]. It also cannot be Chara for one important reason, when Chara appears in the genocide route[49], they note that the anomaly's power awakened them from death[50] noting that their "human soul", their "determination" was not theirs but instead the Anomaly's[51]. While some try to argue that Chara was speaking to Frisk during this cutscene, this does not make sense as Chara directly speaks again once the game is re-opened noting how the anomaly wants to go back to the world they've destroyed[52]. This directly is the same as when one re-opens the game after completing a true pacifist playthrough and has Flowey talk directly to them. Thus The Anomaly is a figure that completely exists within Undertale and is a representation of the player. There's even lines that allude to them, such as Flowey calling out the possibility of someone watching the genocide route[53].
In Deltarune the Anomaly has a choice of telling Sans it's great to see him again despite Kris and Sans never meeting before[54]. This would only make sense if The Anomaly had prior knowledge from another game, which would be Undertale.
