if you keep going the way you are now... you're gonna have a bad time.
~ Sans to the human before they fight Papyrus in the Genocide Route

heya. you've been busy, huh? ... so, i've got a question for ya. do you think even the worst person can change...? that everyone can be a good person, if they just try? heh heh heh heh... all right. well, here's a better question. do you wanna have a bad time? cause if you take another step forward... you are REALLY not going to like what happens next. welp. sorry, old lady. this is why i never make promises.
~ Sans warning the human in the Last Corridor in the Genocide Route

it's a beautiful day outside. birds are singing, flowers are blooming... on days like these, kids like you... Should be burning in hell.
~ Sans' boss introduction

you can't understand how this feels. knowing that one day, without any warning... it's all going to be reset. look. i gave up trying to go back a long time ago. and getting to the surface doesn't really appeal anymore, either. cause even if we do... we'll just end up right back here, without any memory of it, right? to be blunt... it makes it kind of hard to give it my all. ...or is that just a poor excuse for being lazy...? hell if i know. all i know is... seeing what comes next... i can't afford not to care anymore.
~ Sans' battle dialogue

geeettttttt dunked on!!! if we're really friends... you won't come back.
~ Sans after the human spares them

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Sans’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Neutral Route
Sans introduces himself to the human in Snowdin Forest, after first appearing as a silhouette. He explains that he has no interest in capturing humans, though his brother Papyrus does. He then hides the human behind a lamp that happens to be shaped just like them. Papyrus runs in, and the brothers discuss Sans's laziness and the importance of maintaining their puzzles. Sans appears several more times throughout Snowdin Forest, watching and commenting on puzzles without actively participating in them, aside from the word search.

Before the fight with Papyrus, Sans does not appear in Snowdin Town. He briefly shows up during the date or hangout with Papyrus to play the trombone, but otherwise does not appear again until the Last Corridor, if Papyrus was killed.

After the human enters Waterfall, Sans is found at a sentry station and asks if they want to take a break. If they agree, he takes them to Grillby's using a "shortcut." The patrons greet him warmly, and he buys the human a burger or fries. During their conversation, a spotlight falls on them, and time seems to stop as Sans reveals that a flower has been talking to Papyrus. He believes someone is tricking Papyrus with an Echo Flower, though the flower in question is actually Flowey. Sans appears again later in Waterfall to prank the human with a telescope that has a red eye. If Papyrus was killed, a hooded figure watches Shyren's battle; if Papyrus was spared, Sans sells concert tickets made of toilet paper, implying the hooded figure was also Sans.

In Hotland, the human passes Sans sleeping at a sentry post if they fled from Undyne. Undyne notices him and yells at him mid chase. If Undyne was killed, Sans is not there.

Later, Sans sells Hot Dogs in Hotland for 30 G. If the human tries to buy one with a full inventory, he stacks up to thirty Hot Dogs on their head for free. Further ahead, Sans waits outside the MTT Resort and asks if the human wants to grab a bite. He uses a "shortcut" to bring them inside and talks about a woman he befriended who shares his love of puns. He explains that she made him promise to protect any human who left the Ruins, and adds that if she had not said anything, the human would be dead. He quickly calls it a joke and claims he has done a great job protecting them. If the human has not died before, Sans takes credit; if they have died, he questions the claim. Before leaving, he tells them to take care of themselves because someone really cares about them.

In the Last Corridor, Sans delivers his final judgment. He explains that EXP and LOVE stand for Execution Points and Level of Violence, and judges the human based on their current EXP.

If the human has gained no EXP, Sans skips the judgment and praises them for choosing compassion and mercy throughout their journey. He explains that the human's actions will decide the world's fate in one of two ways: either they let Asgore take their SOUL so the monsters can break the Barrier, or they take Asgore's SOUL to escape. He concludes that they now have enough determination to do the right thing and leaves.

If the human has heard his speech before, Sans notices their bored expression and offers a secret codeword to prove they are a time traveler. After loading the SAVE a few times, Sans confirms his suspicion and gives them a key to his room, which leads to his workshop.

If the human has gained EXP, Sans gives them a moment to reflect. He stresses the importance of integrity. If Papyrus is alive, he says whatever happens next is up to the human. If Papyrus was killed, Sans expresses suspicion that the human has special powers. He then asks if they think they have a responsibility to do what is right. Regardless of their answer, he mentions his fallen brother and leaves.

If the human returns to the Last Corridor after loading a SAVE, Sans judges them based on their current LV. Further attempts to talk to him after that prompt him to say to "consider [their] session over.".

Endings
After the human defeats Flowey X, Sans calls and informs them of the events that transpired after their departure. The content of this phone call varies depending on the human's actions.

True Pacifist Route
Sans does not appear in the Last Corridor during the True Pacifist Route. There is also no SAVE point when the human enters the corridor. He later appears during the cutscene before the battle with Asriel, where he meets Toriel in person for the first time. Flowey traps Sans and the human's other friends, but they shield the human from Flowey's attacks before he absorbs their SOULs. During the fight with Asriel, Sans is among the Lost Souls.

Epilogue
After Asriel is defeated, Sans stands with the other main characters. If the human speaks to him, his response varies based on what they said to Toriel during phone calls at the start of the game. Sans also borrows Toriel's phone to send texts for her, since her thumbs are too large to press the buttons properly. When the human is ready to leave, Sans exits the Underground alongside the other monsters.

When Papyrus runs ahead to introduce himself to the humans, Sans says someone needs to keep him out of trouble and runs in the opposite direction, likely using a shortcut. In the credits, Sans rides a tricycle on a highway while Papyrus drives a car beside him, looking annoyed when Sans pulls ahead.

Genocide Route
Sans stalks and introduces himself to the human as usual but requests that they continue pretending to be a human. He does not comment on the human turning around before he asks them to. Sans goes along with Papyrus's japery and does not appear as an NPC as he does on other routes. After the human crosses the bridge before Snowdin Town, Sans warns them not to fight his brother or else they will "have a bad time." He then disappears and is absent until the Last Corridor.

If the human aborts the Genocide Route by sparing Papyrus, Sans reappears at the Waterfall sentry station and tells the human he respects them for doing that. He continues to appear as he does on the Neutral Route but does not take the human to Grillby's since there is no one left in Snowdin.

the human encounters Sans in the Last Corridor for his battle.

After defeating Sans, the human's EXP is set to 99999, granting them LV 20. Sans notices if the human has killed him before and is re-fighting him.

Sans does not count as a kill in the Stats menu, and the game does not record whether or not he is killed.

Name Meaning

Sans name is a reference to the font "comic sans", this is part of the reason he also speaks in it. According to Toby this was playing on the joke of Comic Sans and Papyrus being the most hated fonts at the time.

Appearance

General Description: Sans is a relatively short and paunchy skeleton with mitten-like hands. He is always seen with a wide, toothy grin on his face.

Facial Features: He has white dots in black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered. When he uses telekinesis, his left eye flashes light blue and yellow while his right pupil vanishes.

Clothing/Outfit: A blue hoodie with a white t-shirt underneath. Black shorts with white stripes. A pair of slippers.

Personality

  • Lazy and Apathetic: Sans is lazy, often sleeping on the job and taking breaks. His laziness is a combination of fatalism and apathy, as he is aware of timeline resets. Conversely, he suggests that this knowledge could be "a poor excuse for being lazy."
  • Mischievous: Sans enjoys being mischievous, primarily toward those he is on good terms with. His antics include selling fried snow, using whoopee cushions, sharing an unscrewed ketchup bottle, and putting eye paint on a telescope. He uses teleporting and magic for practical jokes and is fond of making low-brow puns. He performs at the MTT Resort as a comedian.
  • Considerate: Despite being apathetic toward his own life, Sans is considerate to those he cares for. He is a regular at Grillby's and is treated kindly by monsters and Royal Guard dogs. He informed Big Mouth about various foods, though Big Mouth comments he always orders the worst burger. Although he hates making promises, he respects Toriel's request to watch out for humans. Even if the human killed people close to him, Sans refrains from broaching the topic until the Last Corridor. In Neutral Route endings where Papyrus or Toriel is alive, Sans omits the human's slaughter to them.
  • Observant: Sans reads the human's expressions and can often tell when they have already done certain tasks.
  • Serious: Though usually agreeable, Sans can become eerily serious to emphasize a subject. Regardless of the human being partially or wholly merciful, he tells them that if the old lady had not made him promise to protect them, "(they'd) be dead where (they) stand." During the Genocide Route, he does everything in his power to kill the human, even faking mercy.
  • Scientific: Sans may have a scientific background, evidenced by the quantum physics book, workshop, his relationship with Alphys, affinity for science, inexplicable ability to teleport, and timeline research.
  • Wants to Go Back: Sans has implied he once longed and searched for a life he cannot go back to, as he "gave up trying to go back a long time ago." As a Lost Soul, he tells the human that "you'll never see 'em again."

Relationships

The Human

Sans's behavior toward the human shifts based on their choices throughout the Underground. Under normal circumstances, he enjoys playing pranks on them and occasionally spending time with them—unless they have killed Papyrus. Near the conclusion of a Neutral or Genocide Route, he passes judgment on them based on their EXP. By the end of the True Pacifist Route, he regards them as a genuine friend. If the human has killed Papyrus, Sans avoids them until the Last Corridor, where he reminds them of what they did to his brother.

Sans initially views the human as an "anomaly," and his attempts to befriend them were motivated by a hope that they would stop resetting the timeline. However, he also mentions that the human survived their first encounter because of a promise he made to Toriel. This statement could imply that he would have killed them, that he protected them from harm after their initial meeting, or that he was simply joking.

His awareness of time manipulation makes him highly observant. He can read the human's expression to determine if they have experienced events before and are repeating them. He also knows exactly how much EXP they have accumulated and comments on it when delivering his judgment.

If the human follows a pacifist path, Sans begins to shed his usual apathy and comes to genuinely support their mission, as seen during the date at MTT Resort and in his Last Corridor judgment.

Papyrus

Sans deeply cares for and admires his brother. He tolerates Papyrus's temper tantrums and knows how to handle his childish outbursts. He also reads him bedtime stories and gives him presents under the guise of Santa. At the same time, Sans enjoys teasing Papyrus, sending him bad puns on the UnderNet and leaving a dirty sock in their living room for Papyrus to fuss over.

Sans also worries about others harming Papyrus or taking advantage of his naivety. In the Papyrus ending of the Neutral Route, Papyrus mentions that Sans handles all the paperwork and puts in unusual effort compared to his usual laziness. To spare Papyrus from the grief of others' deaths, Sans lies and tells him they have gone on vacation—a deception he maintains in other Neutral Route endings where Papyrus survives.

Toriel

Toriel and Sans share a mutual love of bad jokes and are friends, despite never seeing each other face-to-face until the epilogue, the Family Ending, or the Exiled Queen Ending. Prior to the human's arrival, the two exchanged jokes through the door to the Ruins.

In the Exiled Queen Ending, Sans becomes Toriel's roommate if Papyrus has been killed. In this route, he does not tell Toriel about the human's slaughter in order to uphold his promise. If Papyrus is alive, the brothers visit Toriel often, play board games together, and sometimes convince her to leave the Ruins.

Though not one to make promises easily, Sans honors Toriel's request to watch over and protect any human who exits the Ruins. Near the end of the Genocide Route, he indirectly apologizes to her, as he is forced to break that promise in order to stop the human.

Sans and Toriel are only shown together on-screen in the True Pacifist Ending. If the human decides to explore the Underground again before heading to the surface, Sans sends texts to Toriel on their behalf, since her thumbs are too large for the phone buttons. It is implied that the two soon begin fighting for control of the phone as they send embarrassing messages about each other.

Alphys

While there is evidence that Sans and Alphys share a relationship, Sans only makes vague references to it in the epilogue.

Notably, if Papyrus is called just before entering the Lab, Sans appears in the call and suggests that there may be dogs inside. This hints that he may be aware of the True Lab's contents, as Endogeny—an Amalgamate composed of several dogs—can be found there. In an aborted Genocide Route, Alphys is forced to rule the Underground and Sans helps her lead; she describes Sans as "a good guy."

W. D. Gaster

Several details hint at a connection between Sans and W. D. Gaster. Evidence includes the blueprints and hidden machine found in his workshop, the sprites used for his skull-like laser guns—labeled "gasterblaster" in the game files—and his unexplained scientific research into the "anomaly" and timelines. Additionally, both Sans and Papyrus are named after fonts, a pattern assumed to extend to Gaster, leading many to believe they are related.

Noted even in a pacifist route to be capable of killing the human[8]), Higher with Magic (Monsters enact in SOUL battles against humans due to humans in their physical forms being far stronger than monsters[9]). Can ignore conventional durability with attacks to the SOUL (As they are attacking the SOUL; which is the very culmination of one's being[10])

Durability: At least Bone level, Lower if not wanting to FIGHT or cruel intentions (Monsters weaken when they don't want to fight[11] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[11])

Stamina: Peak Human (Despite being shown as lazy, Sans was able to keep up with the human for a while, battling them until the very end, going full on out and spammed his most powerful attacks until he passed out to give the human a bad time that no other monster in the genocide route had done, fighting for seven minutes straight[13])

Range: Standard Melee physically, Tens of Meters with Magic, Higher with Gaster Blasters, Kilometers with Teleportation (Has shown to be able to teleport throughout the underground and get to areas that are far ahead of where he originally was when talking to the human)

So aware of it to the point that he can tell from the look on one's face what they have done in a completely different timeline or an event that transpired in a different timeline)

Knowledge:' At least Master level

Powers and Techniques

Notable Techniques

  • Blue Mode: Sans turns his opponent's soul blue, giving it gravity and allowing him to more easily hit his foes. However, Sans appears to have a far greater mastery of this ability than Papyrus, allowing him to effortlessly fling his foe around by manipulating their soul, or effectively 'changing gravity' and forcing them to move along the walls or ceiling. He also does not need to hit them with a blue attack first to turn them blue.
  • Bone Attacks: Sans will send a massive amount of bones at his opponent. He will mix up his style, forcing his foes to jump through small gaps between bones, over pits full of dozens of bones, or even to rush the movement of the platforms so that they don't fall into a deadly trap composed of dozens upon dozens of bones. Sans will often throw in blue bones, which while they cannot be dodged, will only hurt his opponent if they attempt to move through them as opposed to allowing it to pass harmlessly through. While these attacks hardly seem to so any damage initially, the damage quickly racks up from remaining in contact with them, allowing this relatively weak opponent a way of bypassing the defenses of superior foes.
  • KARMA: When struck by one of Sans' attacks one will suffer from this condition, for a brief period. It essentially functions as poison damage for one's SOUL.
  • Gasterblasters: Strange devices in the shape of skulls which fire powerful lasers from their maws. Like Sans' bones, Gasterblasters will often be used in numbers and will deal KR damage.
  • Teleportation: Sans can teleport not only himself but objects and other people, as well. During a battle, Sans will often teleport his opponent, himself, and his attacks, not only moving out of harm's way but moving his foe into the path of a new attack. He has also shown the ability to restrain an enemy by repeatedly warping them back to their initial position.

Other

Standard Tactics: Sans typically does not like fighting[55] and will only fight seriously and try to give it his all if he can't afford to not care anymore[56]. In the context of Undertale, this required the human to commit mass genocide in the Underground to the point that they had no way of turning back.

Weaknesses

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[66] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[67].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[68] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[69].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[9] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[9]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[9].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[11]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[11] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[11]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[70].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[71].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[72].
