Sauron was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves; his dominion was torment.

"Annatar" by Alaïs
"Annatar" by Alaïs
It began with the forging of the great rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men — who above all else, desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and will to govern each race. But they were all of them deceived, for another ring was made. In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master ring, to control all others. And into this Ring, he poured his cruelty, his malice, and his will to dominate all life. One Ring to rule them all.
~ Galadriel's monologue
One by one, the free lands of Middle-Earth fell to the power of the Ring, but there were some who resisted. A last alliance of Men and Elves marched against the armies of Mordor, and on the very slopes of Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle-Earth.
~ Galadriel's monologue

Victory was near, but the power of the ring could not be undone. It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father’s sword. Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle-Earth, was defeated.
~ Galadriel's monologue

It has begun... The East will fall. So shall the Kingdom of Angmar rise. The time of the Elves is over. The Age of the Orc has come.
~ The Necromancer
You cannot hide. I see you. There is no life in the void. Only death.
~ Sauron to Frodo Baggins

Background

Sauron, created as Mairon, is the main antagonist of The Lord of the Rings, and a minor antagonist present in The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.

Statistics

Tier: At least 9-C, at least 9-B with Magic

Name: Mairon (original name), Sauron (altered name after being suborned by Melkor), Gorthaur (by the Sindar, meaning "Terrible Dread"), Tar-mairon (self-given, meaning "King Excellent"), Zigûr (used in Númenor, meaning "Wizard"), Wolf-Sauron (in his werewolf form)

Origin: Tolkien's Legendarium

Sex: Male (Though the Ainur are immortal, angelic beings, nonetheless they do possess gender, with Sauron being referred to as a male)

Age: Inapplicable (was created within the Timeless Halls during the Creation of the Ainur)

Classification: Ainu (the 'Holy Ones'), Maia, Shapeshifter (can become a werewolf, serpent, and a vampire)

Status: Alive

Alignment: Chaotic Evil (Sauron is an agent of evil, serving the Dark Lord Morgoth as his most trusted lieutenant. However, unlike Morgoth, Sauron did not seek to unmake or corrupt the world. Instead, as a creator at heart, Sauron purely sought to coordinate all things according to his own will, which required conquering Middle-earth. This is because, as his virtue as a Maia, Sauron loved order and greatly disliked chaos; but his love of order and control soon surpassed his love of the people of Arda, resulting in him using them as a means to his end. To reach this ends he uses incredibly dark power and commits horrible deeds, and so although he greatly dislikes aimless chaos, he is still enacting evil deeds for selfish reasons), Chaotic Neutral following Morgoth's defeat (In fear of the wrath of the Valar, Sauron repented his evil deeds. He took on a fair form alongside this, and although he was unwilling to face judgement for his actions in Valinor, seeing it as humiliation, he still repented for what he did and abandoned his evil conquest of the world. For now, he simply sought to continue living)

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: At least Peak Human level (Sauron's power is said to be great and cruel, even more powerful than Finrod Felagund, who could destroy his restraints with sheer power and slay a werewolf with his hands and teeth. As a werewolf, he had a brutal and prolonged battle with Huan, who could quickly and silently slay regular wolves), at least Wall level with Magic (Sauron is a sorcerer of dreadful power. Should be superior to Galadriel, who could completely destroy an Orc with her magic. Should also be comparable to another Maia, Gandalf, whose magic could split a boulder in two and break a stone bridge)

Durability: At least Peak Human level

Striking Strength: At least Peak Human Class

Lifting Strength: At least Peak Human

Travel Speed: Peak Human, at least Superhuman as a werewolf (Sauron can become the greatest werewolf the world has ever seen, with wolves peaking at 60 km/h)

Combat Speed: At least Superhuman

Reaction Speed: At least Superhuman

Stamina: Superhuman+ (As one of the Maiar, Sauron is an angelic spirit far beyond regular beings of Middle-earth, and doesn't require his corporeal body to keep fighting; thus, he doesn't rely on his physical body's stamina, and have his spirit leave it at any time. However, it takes a long time after Sauron's body is destroyed before he regains his strength and can again take shape into a physical living body)

Range: Standard Melee, Extended Melee with Magic, Cross-Dimensional passively (Wearing the One Ring transports the user to the Unseen Realm, though Sauron continues to exist in the Seen World while wearing it. This is similar to Ringwraiths who exist in both Realms at the same time)

Intelligence: Genius academically and combatively (Sauron is a being of exceptional power, both in personal might and in sorcery, nearly casting Middle-earth into darkness several times. His greatest strength lies in his cunning, intellect and charisma, through which he was able to bring ruin to many mortal realms, and unite others unto himself, without even having to physically intervene)

Tier: At least 9-B

Name: Sauron, Annatar (his fake name in attempt to deceive the Elves, meaning "Lord of Gifts"), Artano (meaning "High-smith"), Aulendil (meaning "Devoted to Aulë")

Origin: Tolkien's Legendarium

Sex: Male

Age: Inapplicable

Classification: Ainu, Maia, Ring-maker, The Black Master (by Isildur), The Dark Lord (by the Free Peoples), The Enemy (by the Free Peoples), Deceiver (by Amandil), King of Kings (self-given), The Lord of the Earth (self-given), King of Men (self-given), The Lord of the World (self-given), North King (by the people of Agar),

Status: Alive, Deceased after the Downfall of Númenor (Sauron was caught in and destroyed by the flood in Númenor caused by the supreme God Eru Ilúvatar), Alive a century later (Sauron's spirit returned a century after the flood, reobtaining a physical form, though he was unable to assume a fair shape), Deceased after The Siege of Barad-dûr (Was vanquished by Elendil and Gil-Galad, and had the One Ring cut from his finger by Isildur, losing his ability to form a physical body for a great while)

Alignment: Chaotic Evil (With the First Age over, and after a long period of hiding in Middle-earth, Sauron decided that the Valar had forgotten about him and he once again turned to evil. No longer fearful of his possible punishment, he adopted his evil ways once more and became the same conniving, wicked, corrupting force that he had been before. He sought not to cause chaos in Middle-earth but to impose his own order on it, the way he had always been)

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: At least Wall level (Sauron was unable to assume a fair form and could take only a terrible form, of a stature greater than a Man's, though not giant. Each of his attacks could send armored soldiers flying. Should be comparable to other Maiar, the Balrogs, that are around twice the height of a Man)

Durability: At least Wall level

Striking Strength: At least Wall Class

Lifting Strength: At least Peak Human

Travel Speed: Peak Human

Combat Speed: At least Superhuman

Reaction Speed: At least Superhuman

Stamina: Superhuman+

Status: Alive (After a long wait, Sauron could again take shape into a physical living body), Deceased after The War of the Ring (With the destruction of the One Ring, Sauron's spirit was blown away and vanished, and his corporeal body died. He became a mere spirit of malice that can never again grow or take shape)

Alignment: Chaotic Evil

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: At least Wall level, Higher with Magic (Sauron increased in power and returned more powerful than before. Could magically overpower Gandalf, and destroy a large stone wall with ease)

Durability: At least Wall level

Striking Strength: At least Wall Class

Lifting Strength: At least Peak Human

Travel Speed: Peak Human

Combat Speed: At least Superhuman

Reaction Speed: At least Superhuman

Stamina: Superhuman+

Standard Equipment

*The One Ring: An ancient artifact created by Sauron in the Second Age. After the creation of the nineteen Rings gifted to the different races of Middle Earth, Sauron created one more in secret; One Ring to Rule Them All. This final Ring, also notably called the Ruling Ring or Isildur's Bane, has the ability to control all those who were gifted the other nineteen Rings. Though Sauron lost this Ring during his battle with the Last Alliance, his dark will had been poured into the object and would corrupt all those who possessed it. It drives the wielder insane, and will slowly corrupt their body.

  • Sauron's Mace: A large mace wielded by Sauron during the Second Age, notably during his battle against the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. Sauron used this mace to sweep through hoards of soldiers with ease, and nearly used it to kill Isildur, before he instead had the One Ring cut from his hand. Sauron wielding a mace as his weapon is reminiscent of his master, Morgoth, who wielded a mace in the form of Grond, Hammer of the Underworld.
  • Palantír: Also known as the Seeing Stones, these are orbs that can be used to communicate across large distances. Sauron had his own master Palantír, and gave one to each of his major servants, notably Saruman, in order to speak to them from Mordor. Saruman's Palantír later ended up in the hands of Pippin and Aragorn, who spoke to Sauron through his own.

*Werewolves: Sauron's very own creations. Werewolves are fell beasts, originally regular wolves, that had their bodies inhabited by evil spirits that Sauron imprisoned. Sauron is their master, as he himself is able to take the form of the greatest wolf ever seen. As savage dog-like creatures, werewolves use their teeth and claws to rip and tear through their opponents. They hunt in a pack, and served Sauron throughout all three Ages of Middle-earth.

  • Orcs: Orcs were a race of humanoid creatures best known for their service as footsoldiers and slaves to the Dark Lords of Middle-earth. They are highly violent, cannibalistic and bloodthirsty beings who see ever other race as a victim of their bloodlust. They are a corrupted race of Elves, twisted by the Dark Lord Morgoth, who have now turned to the new Dark Lord, Sauron, as their master, ever since Morgoth's defeat. They are intelligent enough to wear armor and wield weapons, though generally they are far less intelligent than regular humanoids. Most of their power lies in their numbers, rather than strength or skill.
