Paper Mario: The Origami King - Vellumental Battle

Background

The Water Vellumental is a dragon with water-based abilities and the second Vellumental boss fought in Paper Mario: The Origami King. It resides in the Water Vellumental Shrine located in Autumn Mountain. After the Water Vellumental is defeated, Olivia obtains its Bibliofold and can then transform into the Water Vellumental and use its abilities while Mario stands on certain Magic Circles. This is first used to flood a nearby lake. When the Water Vellumental charges up its water attack, its stomach inflates cartoonishly. It is based on the Azure Dragon.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Flight, Natural Weaponry (Can attack with its mouth and wings), Large Size (Supersized; As shown here), Paint Manipulation which includes: Conceptual Manipulation (Paint makes up everything, anyone in Mario can remove paint by attacking), Life Manipulation & Death Manipulation (Paint is all of life, and removal of it can cause a person or object to have no life within, having their concept of life be removed), Blood Manipulation (Paint makes up all of blood within someone, removing it is the same as removing their blood), Mind Manipulation & Memory Manipulation (Paint makes up the mind, as paint beings can directly speak to your mind by coloring your thoughts. Loss of paint can also remove your mind and memories), Spatial Manipulation (Paint makes up all of space. Removing it makes space as if it was solid), Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation; Paint makes up souls and ghosts. Removing it is the equivalent of destroying your soul), Empathic Manipulation (Paint makes up all emotions. Removing it would mean the removal of emotion), Power Nullification (Paint makes up the ability to use powers. Removing it would mean the removal of using powers). BFR and Law Manipulation (Folded soldiers in the Origami King are able to send their opponents to a ringed battlefield regardless of where they are and forces their opponents to align the rings to fight. The Origami Vellumentals do this as well along with being able to affect how the ring system works. It can also wash away action panels off the rings to make things more difficult for opponents), Water Manipulation (Can manipulate and attack with water), Vibration Manipulation (With Wing Ding), Power Bestowal (Upon defeat, the Water Vellumental turned itself into a Bibliofold for Olivia to fold into it and put its power into Magic Circles so Olivia can unleash it).

Notable Techniques

Before Spin

  • Summon Spouts - Summon a number of water spouts to the Inner Circle, each targeting an angle of the battlefield. The number of spouts varies, from 2 to 6. They will stay until it uses Wash Away at the end of it's turn.
    • Wash Away: When Mario finishes spinning the battlefield, it uses the Wash Away ability. The spouts go on their respective lines, wiping out things on their way.

On its turn

  • Bite- If the Vellumental is grounded and Mario is facing it, it will bite him, dealing damage once.
  • Flying Bite - If Mario is on high ground (risen by Olivia's Earth Vellumental power), and the Vellumental is Flying, it will use Flying Bite.
  • Wing Ding - If the Vellumental is not flying and Mario is at it's side, it uses its wing to hit Mario.
  • Big Wave - If the Vellumental's belly is full (after using Soak Up 3 times), it uses Big Wave. It throws the water out and deals big damage to units on the board. Mario can dodge if he is on high ground.

End of turn

  • Soak Up - When it is not drained, it uses Soak Up. It will suck up water into its belly, getting bigger each time. After 3 times, it will then use Big Wave.

Other

Standard Tactics: The Water Vellumental BFRs their opponents into a ringed battlefield and creates several waterspouts. Before their opponent acts, they will wash away action panels with tinier waterspouts. They then will attack opponents by slamming them with their wings or biting them. After each turn they soak up water. After three turns, it unleashes its ultimate attack, Big Wave.

Weaknesses: Using Big Wave greatly tires the Water Vellumental.

Note: In Paper Mario Color Splash, the main point of the game is paint. Paint is a concept. As shown in the game, paint encompasses everything. And I mean everything. Paint is shown to be all of land, liquid, life (Once bringing Toad back via paint, Huey states that paint gives life. Additionally, paint can return the blood, organs, and skin to an old fossil that's been dead years ago), mind (Paint can speak to your mind by coloring your thoughts. Paint was able to take over Bowser's body and freely act on their own. Big Paint Stars are also shown to be alive), memory (Toad couldn't remember anything with the loss of paint on his head. Returning paint gave his memories back), emotions, space (even simple holes require paint to function as holes) and souls. Removing any paint would stop making anything work. It's everything.

  1. "If you're familiar with things like Popeye and some of the old comic characters, you would oftentimes see this cast of characters that takes on different roles depending on the comic or cartoon," Miyamoto said. "They might be businessman in one [cartoon] or a pirate in another. Depending on the story that was being told, they would change roles. So, to a certain degree, I look at our characters in a similar way and feel that they can take on different roles in different games."
