~ Lis to Katie

Background

Lis is a major character of the book Seconds, and is the house spirit of Seconds.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Lis’ story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Little is known about Lis's origins other than she appears in Seconds and is as old as the building itself. Depending on her mood, she will lend the power of the mushrooms to the "owner" of Seconds to revise their past. After Katie makes her first revision, she finds Lis's mushroom stash beneath the floors of the pantry and begins using their power without Lis's permission.

After Katie's revisions, she unintentionally invites another house spirit into Seconds, causing it and Lis to fight over the mushrooms. Although Lis survives, she is gravely wounded and is barely alive before Katie finds a single remaining mushroom and gives it to Lis. The three return to their original timeline, with the house spirits never being seen again.

Powers and Abilities

Undead Physiology (Is a house spirit), Invisibility (Remains invisible to those around her and only appears to certain people), Immortality (Types 1, 7, and possibly 8. Lis is a spirit who has lived as long as Seconds [possibly far longer], which was built in the 1800s. It's implied the dresser Lis sleeps in is a link to her own life, further proven by what the dresser's true form resembles and how it being damaged affected Lis), Self-Sustenance (Type 2 and 3. Considers eating and sleeping and a kind gesture of the house owner, and will make their life a worse for the inhabitants), Reality Warping (If not appeased, house spirits will make life "a living hell"), Shapeshifting and Size Manipulation (Can morph her appearance based on how she'd liked to be viewed along with her size), Telekinesis (Can telekinetically move objects around and redirect projectiles), Teleportation and BFR (Can teleport herself and others into Subspace), Consumption (Can eat clothes), Flight, possible Acausality (Types 1, 2, and 4. It is implied that house spirits exists as a single entity across the entire multiverse [See Explanation]. Lis's dresser exists separately from each space-time as shown in Subspace), Law Manipulation (Subspace can shape reality to the user's liking. An example being Scott Pilgrim and the various video game-like aspects of the world, which are a result of Subspace and its perspective-based abilities), Perspective Manipulation & Observation (Type 2. Potent Subspace users can use the perspective-based powers of Subspace to overwrite reality to fit how they view it in the real world), Avatar Creation (Has an avatar in subspace she unconsciously creates), Dimensional Travel & Space-Time Manipulation (Characters can manifest doors directly to subspace, or even move between subspace and the real world through sheer force. Breaking the walls between subspace and the main universe), Mind Manipulation (Entering Subspace directly accesses one's mind and subconscious thoughts), Sheer Will (Those who can access the powers of Subspace in the real world naturally require a strong will and determination to control them), Subjective Reality & Dimensional Storage (Whatever the user can imagine will be created in subspace. For instance, Scott manifested his love for Ramona as the Power of Love, which he can pull from and store in Subspace), Portal Creation & Summoning (As the powers of the characters originate from Subspace, they can create portals or summon beings and objects from their subspace)

All previous powers and abilities to an unknown extent. Regeneration (Low-Godly. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will), Immortality (Type 3, 5, 6, and 8. Subspace avatars are avatars of pure cognition of one's true self and by extension can be restored by the true form at will. Concepts such as death are irrelevant to them as even if one dies they will just be sent into subspace. Even spirits can freely pass through and from Subspace. All damage done to a subspace avatar means nothing to them, Scott could lose his limbs in subspace and be cut in half and would still be perfectly fine), Abstract Existence (Type 1. The subspace avatar is a being of pure cognition, existing as a mere thought in the realm of subspace, with the effects done to their body being useless as it will always regenerate back or be unaffected by acts such as cutting it in half, even if the true user dies the subspace avatar will still exist), Acausality (Type 4. Subspace is a different space-time where all rules are different (including death), thus it should by extension be a different system of causality), Perspective Manipulation (Perception is Law. People, items, and Mind Subspace itself are based on the nature of the person's mind, therefore, however, a person imagines Subspace is how it will appear. A good example is Scott's Dream Desert: this location is repeatedly used as a metaphor for Scott's loneliness but also is his projected image of Subspace at that time which Ramona is able to pass through), Law Manipulation (One’s subspace operates under their rules and systems which can extend even to the real world with characters like Gideon affecting Ramona’s Subspace), Reality Warping & Mind Manipulation (While Mind Subspace allows for others' own projected images of themselves to take on other forms, the individual whom the Subspace resides in retains all power and control within said mind. Through this, the character can shape themselves and Subspace to their liking all through their thoughts, perspectives, and desires), Power Nullification (A user of Subspace can completely nullify any connection an opponent has in that Subspace, regardless if they're more powerful or not. This is how Ramona was able to expel Gideon despite him being a master of Subspace and able to manipulate it inside anyone's mind), Dimensional Travel (Can enter her avatars at any point if she so desires even after death)

Reality Warping, Timeline Manipulation and Event Manipulation (Like Katie, she can change her past), Probability Manipulation (The abilities of the mushrooms are described by Hazel as traversing probability space and changing the destinies of everyone in Seconds), Spatial Manipulation (The other spirit's use of the mushrooms were changing space each revision), Transmutation (Katie turned a variety of people into skeletons with her revisions), Erasure (Space-Time Erasure; Erased all of Andrew from the timeline, along with the entire timeline itself), Fusionism (Merged the events of other timelines into one), Healing (The mushrooms restored Lis back to her prime and allowed her to travel back to Katie's original timeline)

Standard Equipment

Mushrooms

Other

Weaknesses: Without mushrooms, Lis will began to tire out and shrink to the size of a sock. Damage to her tree could result in her death as well.

Explanations

For further explanation of subspace, read this blog.

It's implied throughout the story of Seconds that Lis and the Lucknow Spirit are the same entity across each timeline and only have one incarnation that is connected to every timeline. For Lis, her connection would be the red dresser which encompasses every alternate timeline in the Seconds multiverse. Furthermore, there are timelines where Katie never buys the building on Lucknow Street, yet the spirit is still in Seconds.
