Nya is the former Elemental Master of Water, the current Samurai X, the younger sister of Kai, and Jay's Yang. Born two years after her brother, they were raised by the previous Elemental Masters of Fire and Water, Ray and Maya. Nya was born with her mother's power over Water. Ray used to tell the two children stories of the dragons, creatures that belonged to the living and the dead. Unfortunately, their time together was short lived, and when Nya was three years old, her parents went missing due to the actions of the Time Twins. This absense caused Nya to become independent at a very young age.
The two siblings inherited the Four Weapons blacksmith shop, and managed the store while Kai tried to carry on his father's legacy. Once the two siblings grew up and became older teenagers, one meeting changed the trajectory of their lives forever. While working in the shop, Kai and Nya met a mysterious old man, who complained that none of the weapons were useful for the tools of the ninja. Moments after shunning the man away, their blacksmith shop was attacked by the Skulkin, who were in search of a map. This map was far from ordinary, as it lead to the mystical Four Weapons of Spinjitzu. Under the orders of Lord Garmadon, the Skulkin also kidnapped Nya and was taken away. It was this event that inspired and motivated Kai into training with the old man, known as Master Wu, to being a Ninja.
Nya was taken to the Fire Temple, and was used as bait for Kai to travel there. In order to get the weapon, Garmadon threatened to drop Nya into the lava, forcing Kai to retrieve the Sword of Fire to cut the chains binding her and rescue her. Over the many adventures of the Ninja throughout their adventure to retrieve the four silver Fangblades, Nya desired to help, and secretly developed her own exo-suit, becoming Samurai X, a small rival to the Ninja.
Nya continued to be a valued ally of the Ninja as Samurai X, helping them through the Final Battle, the Nindroid crisis and the Tournament of Elements. However, during Morro's invasion of Ninjago, Wu informed Nya of her true destiny. As her brother inherited his father's power of Fire, Nya would inherit the powers of her mother. In short, Nya was an Elemental Master. However, Nya wasn't pleased with this revelation. Only liking what comes easy to her, Nya only wanted to help the Ninja as Samurai X, and rejected her destiny of being the Water Ninja. Though the training troubled her, Nya eventually unlocked her True Potential, and drowned the ethereal Preeminent, destroying both the Cursed Realm and Djinjago in the process.
This resulted in angering Nadakhan, a wise and tricky Djinn, who freed his crew of pirates and wrecked havoc on Ninjago City. Due to her similar appearence to Nadakhan's deceased lover Delara, Nya was captured by the Djinn and forced to marry him, making the Djinn a King and proving to be a dangerous and powerful adversary. While the Ninja's plan to poison the Djinn to tire him worked, Nya was also hit with the poison, and died in Jay's arms. Jay's final wish managed to reverse these events, saving Nya's life.
Nya continued to serve as one of the Ninja, defeating Krux and Acronix 40 years in the past, facing the crime syndicate the Sons of Garmadon, fighting the Oni in a climactic battle for Ninjago, being stranded in the Never-Realm, being trapped in Prime Empire and travelling to the Lost Ivory City of Shintaro.
Shortly after these events, Nya's powers started to fail due to an unknown power surge coming from the underwater city of Merlopia. Nya, Maya and the Ninja travelled to Merlopia to investigate the source of the power surges. The Ninja discovered that the surges came from Prince Kalmaar's attempts to reawaken the sea serpent Wojira in an attempt to destroy the surface world in an attempt to wipe out all surface-dwellers. The Ninja failed to stop Kalmaar from gaining the Storm and Wave Amulets, and he awakened Wojira. A fierce battle took place in Ninjago City, and Jay was severely injured after inhaling a significant amount of water. Left with no other choice, Nya merged with the Endless Sea to become a water spirit, battling and ultimately defeating Wojira, saving Jay's life in the process. The merging cost Nya her humanity, and she departed from the Ninja, entering the sea and swimming away.
One year after her merging, Nya regained her memories with the help of the sea spirit Nyad, and instructed the Ninja that to be returned to normal, her Elemental Powers had to be drained away. With the help of the ancient serpent Aspheera, Nya's humanity was restored, but her powers were no more. Spurred on by Wu's words, Nya developed a new exo-suit, and became Samurai X once more.
