Mettaton

From The Codex
(Redirected from Mettaton)
Undertale/Mettaton
Jump to navigationJump to search

Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL and was built by Alphys. Initially poised as an entertainment robot turned human killing robot, Mettaton is later revealed to have only acted as such so that Alphys could rescue the human, feel important and become closer to them. Mettaton is the sole television star of the Underground.

Appearance

General Description: Mettaton has three distinct forms: his initial box form, his humanoid EX form, and his combat-oriented NEO form.

Initial Form: A gray, largely rectangular box with a 4x5 grid of rectangular lights at the top, similar to the mechanism in Snowdin Forest used for Papyrus's Tile Puzzle. The grid of lights can change colors between red, yellow, green, and blue, and Mettaton uses these color changes in place of facial expressions. Four dials are along the bottom of his body. A single leg ending in a wheel is at the bottom. Two segmented robotic arms end in white gloves.

Mettaton EX: After having the switch on his back flipped in the Neutral or True Pacifist Route, Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX, a body he specially requested Alphys make for him. In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye. A pink chest piece, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder pads above segmented arms that end in gloves. The chest piece has what appear to be a speaker and some knob or gauge. The waist has two parts that seem to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core," as they both lose white pixels during his "heart-to-heart" attack. Long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots.

Mettaton NEO: After being confronted by the human on the Genocide Route, Mettaton transforms into Mettaton NEO, which resembles Mettaton EX but has a more combat-oriented design. Mettaton NEO can be killed by a single attack and has no attacks of his own. His right forearm is replaced by what appears to be a cannon. Pauldrons clad his shoulders, which are shaped like legs and are longer than his arms. Wings are on his back. The soul on his waist points upwards in a more monster-like manner. A heart shape is engraved on his chest plate, similar to Undyne the Undying, also mimicking the Delta Rune in the same ways. His hair on the right side is spiked out, revealing an entirely black segment of his face, with a sparkle or crosshair in place of his right eye.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: Mettaton EX and Mettaton NEO are considered alternate forms of Mettaton.

Personality

  • TV Host: Mettaton is a confident, charismatic, and charming TV host who loves drama, action, and violence. He lives for his ratings and adores performing. He strikes a pose when he does something wrong and makes time on his shows to beat up "heel-turning villains."
  • Egotistical: Mettaton has a strong craving for attention and seems very egotistical, shown when he boasts about the beauty of his true form.
  • Cares About His Show's Impact: Despite his self-centered personality, Mettaton deeply cares about the positive impact his show has had on the inhabitants of the Underground.
  • Soft Spot: Mettaton has shown soft spots for several characters, such as Alphys and Napstablook.
  • Feelings on Humanity: Mettaton has no hate or prejudice against humans despite knowing about monsters' history with them. His initial attempts to kill the human were him playing along with Alphys's plan. He tells the human he has no desire to hurt humans and is more interested in entertaining. He attempted to kill the human to prevent Asgore from taking their SOUL and be seen as a hero to humankind.
  • Demanding: Mettaton is a very demanding boss who is unpleasant to work for, especially according to Burgerpants. This is contradicted by dialogue from other employees when he is killed in the Neutral Route, suggesting Burgerpants may be exaggerating or that this behavior is only targeted toward him.

Relationships

The Human

Initially, Mettaton actively opposed the human under the assumption that his anti-human combat programming—combined with directive errors—had instilled in him an intense hatred for humans and a compulsion to destroy them. This ultimately proved to be an act, however, as Mettaton later reveals that he actually loves humanity. Nevertheless, he continued to work against the human on his own terms, seeking to claim their SOUL in order to prevent a potential war instigated by Asgore. After their battle, he became confident that the human was strong enough to avert such a conflict on their own.

Alphys

Mettaton and Alphys initially bonded over their shared interest in human culture, and he remains grateful to her for constructing his physical body. Soon after receiving his first body, however, he began to frequently belittle her and mock her interests. Despite this, he owed Alphys enough to play along with her plan—acting the part of a malfunctioning robot—before eventually pursuing his own agenda with the human. In the ending where he is made king, he expresses regret for having been cruel to her before she went missing.

Napstablook

Before obtaining his body, Mettaton was Napstablook's cousin, helping them run the snail farm and living next door to them. The two appeared to be very close; Mettaton originally declared that he would never leave them behind and often referred to them affectionately as "Blooky"—a nickname he continued to use. Although he eventually left them behind in pursuit of stardom, he clearly still cared for his cousin, appearing regretful when Napstablook called into his show to express gratitude for his programs. Once he acquired his permanent new body, he immediately recruited Napstablook to join him on tour so they could stay together.

Powers and Techniques

Equipment

Mic, Disco Ball as EX

Notable Techniques

  • Legs: Mettaton EX will create numerous copies of his own legs, sending them at his opponent.
  • Mini Mettatons: Mettaton EX will summon tiny copies of his base form which will attack his opponent with deadly heart projectiles.
  • Cross Bombs: Mettaton EX will rain bombs down on his opponent. When hit, the bombs will explode into bursts of energy in the form of a '+'.
  • Arms: Mettaton EX will summon numerous copies of his arms, which are invincible save for a yellow square which must be hit in order to make them retreat.
  • Heart to Heart: Mettaton EX's heart will fly out of his chest, firing bolts of lightning and electricity. Damaging or destroying the heart will also do damage to Mettaton himself.
  • Disco Ball: Mettaton EX will summon a giant disco ball which fires lasers at his foes. Lasers of white light will always damage the opponent, but lasers of blue light are harmless to those who stand still. Hitting the disco ball will not damage it, but instead cause white lasers to turn blue and blue lasers to turn white.

Other

Standard Tactics: In box form Mettaton will shoot electricity at the opponent. In Mettaton EX form, they will use various magic attacks and rewinding time during their attacks. Mettaton NEO is unknown as they let The Human attack first and are promptly killed.

Weaknesses

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[28] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[29].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[30] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[31].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[3] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[3]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[3].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[5]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[5] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[5]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[32].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[33].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[34].
