Mew

From The Codex
Pokémon/Mew
Jump to navigationJump to search

Mew is a Psychic-type Mythical Pokémon that debuted in Generation I (Pokemon Red, Green, Blue & Yellow). It has no pre-evolution nor evolution.

Mew is especially known for its rare ability to learn every Technical Machine, Technical Record, Hidden Machine, and Move Tutor move.

Mew serves as the genetic template for Mewtwo and shares a close association with it, leading fans to refer to the pair as the Mew duo. Mew was first officially revealed in the May 1996 issue of CoroCoro, less than two months after Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan. It is the final Pokémon listed in the Kanto Pokédex in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, and also holds the last slot in the Pokopia Pokédex.

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Mew’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Mew has displayed a playful, childlike personality and shows signs of high intelligence, curiosity, shyness, and even selflessness. It is said to contain the DNA of every Pokémon within its body, leading many scientists to theorize that Mew is the ancestor of all Pokémon. It is an incredibly adaptable species, capable of levitation and teleportation, and can use nearly all known moves regardless of type. It has also demonstrated the rare ability to transform into any known Pokémon. Mew can turn invisible at will, allowing it to avoid notice even when approaching people. On several occasions, it has created an orb of energy around itself for protection, which can appear in colors such as green, yellow, and pink.

According to journals found in Kanto's Pokémon Mansion, Mr. Fuji discovered Mew deep in the jungle and gave it its name. Along with other scientists, he collected some of Mew's DNA and used it in the mansion to create a modified clone, aiming to produce the most powerful Pokémon of all. This resulted in the birth of the Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo. Because Mew can turn invisible, very few people have seen it, leading some scientists to declare it extinct and most to assume it is nothing more than a mirage. However, sightings continue to be reported, confirming its existence. Though rarely seen, Mew will willingly reveal itself to someone pure of heart who strongly desires to see it. As noted in the Sleep Style Dex, Mew can remain invisible even while sleeping, making it difficult for researchers to record its various sleep styles.

According to the radio drama The Birth of Mewtwo, Mew was discovered by Jessie's mother, Miyamoto, who recorded its cry in a forest twenty years before the events of the series. It was worshiped by ancient people who created a song in its honor and believed it appeared once a year with the rising sun. It was not rediscovered until eighteen years after Miyamoto encountered it, at sunrise on a high mountain peak. As shown in the episode "In the Palms of our Hands!", Mew can split itself and transform into multiple Pokémon simultaneously. It also shares a strong rivalry with its clone, Mewtwo, as depicted in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

Mew is the only known Pokémon capable of using the Z-Move Genesis Supernova.

Name Meaning

The name Mew may be a combination of "mutant" or "mutation" and "new." It could also involve the Japanese word 妙 (myō), meaning "wonderful" or "exquisite."

According to Julien Bardakoff, the French localizer for Pokémon Red and Blue, he once asked whether Mew's name was based on the English onomatopoeia for a cat's meow and was explicitly told that it was not.

Mewnium Z

  • Description: The Mewnium Z (Japanese: ミュウZ Mew Z) is a type of Z-Crystal introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. It is a Pokémon-specific Z-Crystal associated with Mew.
  • Usage: Used as a held item. Can create Mewnium Z held items for the player's Pokémon.
  • Function: Allows Mew (or a Pokémon transformed into Mew) to upgrade its Psychic into the special Z-Move Genesis Supernova. If Mew is transformed into a Pokémon other than Mew, it cannot use its exclusive Z-Move. Unaffected by item negating effects (such as Embargo and Klutz). Item manipulating effects (such as Trick and Fling) cannot remove a Z-Crystal from a Pokémon. Rayquaza cannot Mega Evolve if it holds a Z-Crystal. A held Mewnium Z is automatically removed if the Pokémon is traded between players.

Lum Berry

  • Description: A Lum Berry (Japanese: ラムのみ Lum Fruit) is a type of Berry introduced in Generation III. It is the spiritual successor of the MiracleBerry from Generation II, having an identical effect when used on or by a Pokémon.
  • Usage: Used as a held item. When used from the Bag on a Pokémon, it cures that Pokémon of its non-volatile status condition. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it can be used to cure any status condition on a Pokémon, or thrown near wild Pokémon to draw their attention.
  • Function: If the holder is affected by any non-volatile status condition or confusion, it will consume its Lum Berry and cure its status condition. When forcibly consumed via Fling, Pluck, or Bug Bite, it also cures the consumer of its non-volatile status condition or confusion.

Salac Berry

  • Description: A Salac Berry (Japanese: カムラのみ Camula Fruit) is a type of Berry introduced in Generation III.
  • Usage: Used as a held item.
  • Function: A Salac Berry raises the holder's Speed by one stage when the holder's HP drop to ¼ or below. If the holder has Gluttony, then it eats its Salac Berry when its HP drops to ½ or below. If the holder has Ripen, then its Speed rises by two stages. When forcibly consumed via Fling, Pluck, Bug Bite, Teatime, or Item Urge, it raises the Speed of the consumer by one stage.

Explanations

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of Pokémon

Status Effects
Name Effect Apperances
Burned Reduces one's physical attack and takes damage overtime from the burns. Usually caused by Fire type moves and generally lasts indefinitely unless an external item, ability like shed skin, or move like rest is used. In Generation 1, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. In Generation 2, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/8 of its maximum health. In Generation 8 onward, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. Burn status can be caused by the following moves: Beak Blast (if a Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move during the move's charging phase), Blaze Kick, Blazing Torque, Blue Flare, Burning Bulwark (If contact is made with the user of the move), Burning Jealously (If the Pokémon has increased stats during that turn), Ember, Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Fire Punch, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Fling (if holding a Flame Orb), Heat Wave, Ice Burn, Infernal Parade, Inferno, Matcha Gotcha, Lava Plume, Psycho Shift (If the user of the move is already inflicted with the burn status), Pyro Ball, Sacred Fire, Sandsear Storm, Scald, Scorching Sands, Searing Shot, Secret Power (when used on a volcano), Shadow Fire, Sizzly Slide, Steam Eruption, Tri Attack, and Will-O-Wisp. Most Pokémon Games
Freeze Prevents any action in battle. Usually caused by Ice type moves and generally only lasts for multiple turns, they can be thawed out early if hit by a fire move. The thaw out chance ranges from generation, in Generation 2 the thaw out chance is a 25/256 chance. In Generation 3, the thaw out chance is 20% each turn. In Pokémon Champions, the thaw out chance is 25% each turn. In Generation 1, a frozen Pokémon cannot break out unless hit by a fire-type move that can inflict burn or if an opponent uses the move Haze. Frozen status can be caused by the moves: Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Freezing Glare, Ice Beam, Ice Fang, Ice Punch, Powder Snow, Secret Power (when used in snow or ice weather), Shadow Chill, or Tri Attack. Most Pokémon Games
Frostbite In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the freeze status conditions is replcaaed with frostbite. Frostbite has the Pokémon lose 1/16 of their maximum health every turn and reduces damage dealt by a frostbitten Pokémon's special moves. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Paralysis Has a chance of preventing any action in battle and lowers speed stat. Usually caused by Electric type skills, it lasts indefinitely without external help, any ability like shed skin, or a move like rest. In later games, attacking a shocked enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Paralysis in general has a 25% chance of having a Pokémon be unable to attack asides from Pokémon Champions. In Generation 1, paralysis reduces a Pokemon's speed by 75% rounded down due to a stats modification glitch (along with this, using moves like agility would return the dropped speed to normal and double it and the speed drop would stay even after being cured of Paralysis using an item or through Rest). In Generation 2, the irregularities are fixed. In Generations 7 and 8 the paralysis reduces the Pokémon's speed by 50%. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the paralysis is changed to reduce the affected Pokémon's movement speed during battle. In Pokémon Champions, paralyzed Pokémon have a 12.5% chance to be fully paralyzed. The ability to paralyze can be done by the following moves: Body Slam, Bolt Strike, Bounce, Buzzy Buzz, Combat Torque, Dire Claw, Discharge, Dragon Breath, Fling (if holding a Light Ball), Force Palm, Freeze Shock, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Stun Shock, G-Max Volt Crash, Glare, Lick, Nuzzle, Psycho Shift (if user of the attack is already paralyzed), Secret Power (When used on plain terrain, building floors, link battles, Sky Battles, Distortion World, or Electric Terrain is in effect), Shadow Bolt, Spark, Splishy Splash, Stoked Sparksurfer, Stun Spore, Thunder, Thunder Fang, Thunder Punch, Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Tri Attack, Volt Tackle, Wildbolt Storm, and Zap Cannon. Most Pokémon Games
Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. In Generation 1 a poisoned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of their maximum health at the end of every turn. A badly poisoned Pokémon still takes 1/16 of their maximum health at first, however the damage increases by 1/16 each time it takes poison damage. In Generation 2, the damage is lowered to 1/8 of its maximum damage and poison damage taken by a badly poisoned Pokémon doesn't interact with other types of recurrent damage. From Generation 1 to 4 all poisoned Pokémon in a trainer's party loses 1 HP for every four steps taken (in FireRed and LeafGreen it's instead every five steps). In Generation 1 to 3, the poison Pokémon will take poison damage until they faint. In Generation 4, a poisoned Pokémon's HP will be brought to 1 and then they will cure themself of poison. In Generation 5 to 8 poisoned Pokémon no longer take poison damage outside of battle. In Legends: Z-A, poisoned Pokémon take damage whil it is outside its Poké Ball. The moves that inflict poison are as follows: Baneful Bunker (If Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move), Barb Barrage, Cross Poison, Dire Claw, Fling (if holding Poison Barb), G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Malodor, G-Max Stun Shock, Gunk Shot, Mortal Spin, Noxious Toruqe, Poison Gas, Poison Jab, Poison Powder, Poison Sting, Poison Tail, Psychco Shift (if the user of the move is poisoned), Secret Power (When used in tall grass), Shell Side Arm, Sludge, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Smog, Toxic Spikes, Toxic Thread, and twineedle. Most Pokémon Games
Confusion Confused Pokémon become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy or attack themself. In Generations 1-6 it was a 50% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Generation 7 and onwards, it was a 33% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Legends: Z-A, confusion causes the Pokémon to move sporadically. The following moves cause confusion: Axe Kick, Chatter, Confuse Ray, Confusion, Dizzy Punch, Dynamic Punch, Flatter, G-Max Gold Rush, G-Max Smite, Hurricane, Magical Torque, Psybeam, Rock Climb, Secret Power (only when used on a rocky surface), Shadow Panic, Signal Beam, Strange Steam, Supersonic, Swagger, Sweet Kiss, Teeter Dance, and Water Pulse. Most Pokémon Games
Infatuation Infatuated Pokémon have a chance of not attacking the Pokémon they're infatuated with. There is a 50% chance of the move failing due to infatuation. The following moves cause infatuation: Attract and G-Max Cuddle. Most Pokémon Games
Flinch The Pokémon flinches from an attack, costing them their turn. Only Pokémon with abilites like inner focus will prevent flinching. The following moves cause flinch: Air Slash, Astonish, Bite, Bone Club, Dark Pulse, Double Iron Bash, Dragon Rush, Extrasensory, Fake Out, Fiery Wrath, Fire Fang, Fling (only if King's Rock or or Razor Fang is held), Floaty Fall, Headbutt, Heart Stamp, Hyper Fang, Ice Fang, Icicle Crash, Iron Head, Low Kick, Mountain Gale, Needle Arm, Rock Slide, Rolling Kick, Secret Power (only in caves, rocky terrain, burial grounds, or in space), Sky Attack, Snore (Only if asleep), Steamroller, Stomp, Thunder Fang, Triple Arrows, Twister, Upper Hand, Waterfall, Zen Headbutt, and Zing Zap. Most Pokémon Games
Sleep Prevents any action in battle. The Pokémon is asleep and will normally take some turns to wake up. In Generation 1, sleep lasts for 1-7 turns, with a 1/4 chance to wake up turn 1 and a 1/8 chance to wake up in 2-6 turns. In Generation 2 sleep lasts 2-8 turns, the Pokémon has a 1/4 chance oto wake up in 2 turns or 5 turns and a 1/8 chanc eot wake up in 3 turns, 4 turns, 6 turns, or 7 turns. In Generation 3 sleep lasts 2-5 turns. In Generation 5, sleep now lasts 2-4 turns. In Pokémon Champions, sleep now lasts 2-3 turns. The following moves cause sleep: Dark Void, Dire Claw, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Snooze, Grass Whistle, Hypnosis, Lovely Kiss, Psycho Shift (if user is asleep), Relic Song, Rest, Secret Power (only in long grass, tall grass, or grassy terrain being in affect), Sing, Sleep Powder, Spore, Wicked Torque, and Yawn. Most Pokémon Games
Drowsy The replacement for the sleep status in the Legends games. It has a chance of the afflicted Pokémon being unable to move along with taking increased damage from attacks. Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Fainted Can no longer participate in battle. In most games, if the all Pokémon faint, the trainer whites out and returns back to their last save with some of their money gone. Can only be recovered with revives, healing at a bed or Pokémon Center, or through specific moves. Most Pokémon Games
Wrap Prevents any action from a unit until the wrap ends. Pokémon Generation 1

Trivia

  • Mew is tied with Muk for the shortest English name of all Pokémon.
    • Mew has the shortest Korean name of all Pokémon, consisting of only a single hangul character.
  • In Generations I and II, due to technical limitations, Mew's category name, New Species, is displayed in-game as NEW SPECIE (and in early versions, as NEWSPECIES).
  • Despite being a clone of Mew, Mewtwo appears before Mew in the Pokédex.
  • Mew is the only Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation I.
  • Mew began the trend of each generation until Generation VI introducing a Mythical Pokémon with a base stat total of 600 and a stat distribution of 100 across the board. Others following this trend include Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy, Land Forme Shaymin, and Victini.
  • Because Mew can learn any TM:
    • It is the only gender-unknown Pokémon species legitimately able to learn Captivate, and one of the few that can learn Attract. Both moves fail when used by a Pokémon with unknown gender, including Mew.
    • It is the only Pokémon that can learn Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, Draco Meteor, Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, Water Pledge, and Steel Beam without sharing a type with the move.
  • In the core series, Mew can only be fought as a wild Pokémon on Faraway Island in Emerald. However, this requires the Old Sea Map, an event item distributed only in Japan and Taiwan.
  • The US release of Mew as an event for HeartGold and SoulSilver occurred on the ten-year anniversary of the original release of Gold and Silver.
  • The only ways to legitimately obtain a Shiny Mew are via the Generation II Gotta Catch Em All Event in Thanksgiving 2002, the Old Sea Map on a Japanese copy of Emerald, or through the Pokémon GO Mew Masterwork Research quest, which was available for a limited time during the Pokémon GO Tour: Kanto event and later briefly returned for players who missed it, in early July 2023.
    • Only the latter two can exist in modern games, as the Generation II Shiny Mew cannot be legitimately transferred to Generation III or later.
    • Mew is the only Pokémon that can be Shiny while having the Mightiest Mark.
  • Mew is the only Pokémon obtainable in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! that cannot have the Pokémon GO origin mark in those games.
  • Mew was the last Generation I Pokémon to be added to Pokémon GO, becoming available on March 27, 2018.
  • As of Generation IX, Mew is the only Generation I Pokémon that does not appear in any regional Pokédex other than Kanto and Johto.
  • Mew has the most animated series opening appearances of any Mythical Pokémon, with seven in Japan.
  • At 981 episodes and over two decades, Mew is the Pokémon species that has taken the longest to physically debut in the animated series from the start of its generation out of any Pokémon thus far.
  • The symbol for the Fusion Strike expansion resembles Mew's tail surrounded by Dynamax clouds.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Mew has a 1 in 151 chance of appearing; in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the chance is 1 in 251; and in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the chance is 1 in 492. These numbers reference how many Pokémon were known around the release of each game: 151 in Generation I, 251 in Generation II, and 492 in Generation IV as of February 2008, even though Brawl released in January 2008.
  • Mew is the only Pokémon out of the first 151 to be left out of the original version of the Pokérap.
  • In 2012, Mew was voted the most popular Legendary or Mythical Pokémon in the Pokémon Power Bracket, which included all Legendary and Mythical Pokémon from the first four generations.
  • Mew was designed by Shigeki Morimoto.
    • Designer Shigeki Morimoto stated that Mew's design was based on Mewtwo. Its design was made simpler than Mewtwo's in order to take up less space on the cartridge.
  • Mew was a little-known secret when Red and Green were first released in Japan. Even Nintendo was not initially aware that Shigeki Morimoto had programmed it into the game. According to Morimoto, the cartridges for Red and Green had about 300 bytes of free space left after debugging was complete, and he thought of slotting Mew in as a last-minute addition, despite being told not to tamper with the games post-debugging. In an interview with Game Freak and Creatures, Inc. in Nintendo Power issue 134, Morimoto revealed that he created Mew two weeks before development finished.
  • In the Heahea City GAME FREAK office, Morimoto states that he designed Mew near the very end of development, including its pixel art, cry, and the Pokédex entry later reused in FireRed.
  • Mew's overall physical appearance appears to be based on domestic cats. Several of its features, such as a short muzzle and large hind feet, are commonly found in cats. Its morphology is also vaguely similar to a jerboa, with large hind legs and a long skinny tail. Mew's earliest design in Red and Green resembled a vertebrate embryo, featuring a large head and small body. Mew was soon revised and became mostly mammalian with cat-like traits, while still retaining several embryonic features such as short fine hair and small forearms. Mew is believed by scientists to be the last universal common ancestor of all other Pokémon, which, along with its resemblance to an embryo, may reference recapitulation theory.
