Legend of the Golden Witch Kyrie sits in on the siblings' financial meeting and learns that Rudolf has gotten into trouble at work without her knowledge. She tries to keep him calm as he grows angry over Krauss's demands. At dinner, Maria claims to have received an umbrella and a letter from Beatrice and reads it aloud. Kyrie and the others discuss what the prank might mean. Later, Kyrie talks with Battler about the possibility of a 19th person and teaches him chessboard thinking. Rudolf interrupts their conversation and says he wants to have a family discussion later, ominously mentioning that he will be killed. Rudolf and Kyrie continue the sibling discussion through the night. The next morning, Kyrie and Rudolf are found dead as victims of the first twilight. Turn of the Golden Witch Kyrie takes a break after the sibling conference and briefly speaks with Beatrice after seeing her arrive as a guest on Rokkenjima. She relays this information to the siblings and discusses with them what Beatrice might be after if she is on the island. At dinner, Kyrie appears confused when Beatrice does not join them in eating. In the meta-world, Battler wonders whether Beatrice truly exists as a 19th person on the island. That night, Kyrie and the other adults meet Beatrice in the chapel and acknowledge her existence as a witch. The next morning, Kyrie is discovered as a victim of the first twilight. Banquet of the Golden Witch The next morning, the siblings discover the victims of the first twilight—the servants and Kinzo—each locked in separate rooms of the mansion. They retrieve Winchester rifles from Kinzo's study and retreat with the cousins to the guesthouse. Kyrie and the adults attempt to solve the epitaph, with Kyrie theorizing that wordplay is involved. Rosa and Maria are found as the second twilight victims. Kyrie confirms her alibi with Natsuhi, Krauss, and Rudolf. Kyrie goes to the mansion with Rudolf and Hideyoshi to retrieve food, with Kyrie and Rudolf guarding Hideyoshi with Winchesters as he manages the food cart. EVA-Beatrice locks them inside the mansion and summons Leviathan and Belphegor to kill them. The trio splits up. Kyrie battles Leviathan and laments that she was envious of Asumu for being able to give birth. She states that her envy has lasted eighteen years compared to Leviathan's and shoots down the demon stake with ease. Kyrie and Rudolf regroup to challenge EVA and try to shoot her, but EVA blocks the attack and summons Chiester 45 and Chiester 410. Kyrie and Rudolf attempt to flee but are killed by the Chiesters' golden bow. EVA revives and kills them repeatedly for amusement, then kills Hideyoshi and leaves. Their bodies are later discovered by the survivors. While debating with Battler, EVA claims she used mind control to send Kyrie to the mansion. Beatrice reconstructs the scene of Kyrie's death and finds one of Hideyoshi's cigarette butts in her pocket. Battler uses this as evidence, suggesting Kyrie was suspicious of Hideyoshi and Eva and went to the mansion for another reason. After Nanjo's murder, EVA unleashes a web of red truths and confirms Kyrie's death. Kyrie reappears in the Golden Land after Beatrice denies witches. Alliance of the Golden Witch Kinzo appears before the adults at dinner and summons numerous witches and demons, resulting in six deaths during the first twilight. Kyrie and the other survivors are captured by Gaap and teleported to the underground prison in Kuwadorian. Kyrie and the group speculate on how they could have traveled from the mansion to Kuwadorian, refusing to accept magic as the explanation. They find a phone and call Battler and the cousins in the guesthouse, informing them of what has happened. Kinzo arrives and announces his plan to test the cousins and use the prisoners as sacrifices. Kyrie is forced to call the guesthouse again and relay the details of the tests. The prisoners watch George and Jessica take their tests on a magic mirror when the goats guarding them disappear. Using Shannon and Kanon's abilities, the group escapes and narrowly avoids Virgilia and more goats. They reach the surface but begin being killed one by one by the Chiester Sisters, joined by Chiester 00. Kyrie escapes into a guestroom and calls Battler at the guesthouse. As she narrowly avoids being shot by the Chiesters, she tells Battler to believe in magic and witches while also apologizing to him for being envious of him for so many years. Kyrie is killed soon after, just as Battler asks for clarification. In the Tea Party, Battler investigates the island and examines Kyrie's corpse. He finds several bullet holes around her and a stake embedded in her forehead. End of the Golden Witch The guest Erika and Battler solve the epitaph, and Kyrie and the rest of the family are present to witness the gold. Although Battler holds full rights to the gold, the adults still argue over how it should be divided. Kyrie suggests they consult Kinzo for his input, but Krauss and Natsuhi reject the idea. Battler, Kyrie, and the other adults are discussing matters in the mansion's dining room when they discover a letter from Beatrice naming Battler as the successor and Head of the Ushiromiya Family, along with Kinzo's Head Ring. The next morning, six people are found dead as victims of the first twilight, some of them inside Battler's room. Kyrie helps cover the corpses with blankets, and Erika soon arrives to inspect the scene. Kyrie and the group go to Kinzo's study to speak with him but receive no response from calling or knocking. After entering, they find he is nowhere to be seen. Kyrie gets Natsuhi to admit she was the last person to see Kinzo the previous night and accuses her and Krauss of concealing his death. Battler, however, manages to prove that Kinzo could have left the room. Hideyoshi is found dead inside a closed room, and Kyrie and the group wonder who could have killed him. Kyrie attends the Great Court of Illusions as a witness and is present when Erika accuses Natsuhi of committing the murders. As of the game's suspension, Kyrie is still alive. Dawn of the Golden Witch Kyrie tells Jessica about her rivalry with Asumu and her regret at being unable to fulfill Rudolf's need for a mental partner, which led him to Asumu. She admits she even prepared to kill Asumu herself, having been reduced to a mistress after her stillbirth, but a miracle caused Asumu to die on her own instead. Kyrie advises Jessica to fight for her love, especially if she has a rival, and to be prepared to kill. Jessica resolves to complete the trial and attacks her, but Kyrie dodges and reveals she knew Jessica's plan all along. Jessica begins upgrading herself with magic, much to Kyrie's confusion, and continues her assault. Leviathan arrives to assist Kyrie and helps her reach Krauss's study nearby. Kyrie locks herself inside and presses her finger to the door, preventing Jessica from breaking it down due to Kyrie's envy slowing her progress. Kyrie prepares to grab a phone and call for help, but Jessica uses a fire upgrade to burn her to death from outside the room. Ronove cleans up the room and restores Kyrie's corpse. The remaining survivors find Kyrie's body locked inside the study. Erika tries to examine it but cannot gather enough information since she lost her Detective's Authority. The anti-fantasy plot is later revealed: Kyrie joined Battler in playing a prank and faked her death. However, Erika killed her for real by decapitating her. In the Golden Land, Kyrie attends the love trial results with the rest of the family. Requiem of the Golden Witch During Yasuda's story, a flashback shows Kyrie delivering letters from Battler to the other family members during a conference. In the Tea Party, Bernkastel presents the supposed truth of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders to Ange and Lion. The adults solve the epitaph on the first day and reach the gold room, where Beatrice reveals her plans, explains the bomb, and leaves behind a cash card and some Winchesters. The adults argue over the gold, resulting in Natsuhi being shot and killed by Eva, and Krauss being killed in a struggle with Hideyoshi. Kyrie and Rudolf are the only ones left standing in the gold room. The group argues over what to tell the police and how to handle Krauss and Natsuhi's deaths, ultimately deciding to use the bomb to hide the evidence. Suddenly, Kyrie swiftly shoots and kills Rosa. Eva and Hideyoshi realize Kyrie intends to kill them too. Before they can grab the fallen guns, Kyrie kills Hideyoshi, then seemingly shoots Eva and Beatrice. Kyrie tells Rudolf to activate the bomb, and they set out to kill everyone else on the island so they can keep the cash for themselves and Battler. At some point, Kyrie kills Gohda. She and Rudolf call the cousins in the guesthouse and convince them to come outside under the guise of a test from Kinzo. Kyrie meets Jessica in the dining hall and beats her to death with her gun. She then calls Battler, telling him to come to the chapel and for Maria to wait in the guesthouse. Rudolf kills George and meets up with Kyrie. Kyrie says they should try to convince Battler to join them, but if necessary, she will kill him herself. Eva survives the slaughter and kills Rudolf before encountering Kyrie in the rose garden. Kyrie reveals she killed Maria and the others in the guesthouse. Eva calls her a monster, but Kyrie insists Eva would have done the same in her position. Kyrie says she is no longer an Ushiromiya now that Rudolf is dead and that Ange means nothing to her anymore. Disgusted by Kyrie's cruelty, Eva shoots her to death. Ange refuses to accept this as the truth and transforms into a pile of entrails. Bern then shows Lion a scene in the parlor, revealing that even in Lion's ideal world, they are shot to death by Kyrie. Before the scene can play out, Will arrives to save them, insisting that no clues in any game point toward Kyrie and Rudolf as the culprits. Twilight of the Golden Witch Kyrie and Rudolf later give Ange a riddle. They tell her she will face many challenges in life and that she must remember the advice she has received from those who helped her along the way. Rudolf then pulls Kyrie aside and confesses the truth: Kyrie is Battler's biological mother, but Rudolf had the results switched so he would not have to manage two households. Kyrie is devastated by this revelation. In the manga, Kyrie and the family participate in a game of hide-and-seek instead. Ange overhears Rudolf and Kyrie's conversation and hugs her mother, not wanting her to feel sad when this is supposed to be their true family. Beatrice welcomes the illusions to the party, where Kyrie has a pleasant conversation with Leviathan and others. Bernkastel creates a game for Battler and Beatrice to play, in which Kyrie, Rudolf, and Battler are revealed as the culprits. Kyrie faked her death during the first twilight and escaped the dining hall later. Ange falls into the game and witnesses Kyrie and Rudolf killing George and Maria with guns. Swarms of goats appear, spouting "Rudolf family culprit theories" that imply Kyrie, Rudolf, and Battler killed everyone on Rokkenjima. More goats begin devouring Rokkenjima, and the humans and illusions escape to the Golden Land while fighting them off. An adult Ange reads the Book of the One Truth and takes her own life, then returns to the Golden Land, where Kyrie and the rest of the family welcome and console her. In the manga, the Book of the One Truth suggests that Kyrie and Rudolf really were the culprits behind the Rokkenjima Mass Murders. When Ange returns to the Golden Land, she falls into despair and wonders what she is supposed to feel. Beatrice, the servants, and the Ushiromiya family all admit their part in enabling the massacre, with Kyrie and Rudolf apologizing for not being good parents. Ange is given the strength to build a better future. Erika begins assaulting the Golden Land with a horde of goats, and Kyrie and the rest of the party fight them off. Everyone is killed when the Golden Land crumbles but is later revived through Ange's powers as the Witch of Resurrection. Ange then departs into the future, leaving her family behind in the Golden Land. In the ???, Tohya is finally able to let go of his memories as Battler and returns to the Golden Land, welcomed by his family. |
Appearance
General Description: Kyrie is a tall and well-endowed woman with short white hair that has bangs swept to the right, and onyx eyes.
Clothing/Outfit: A long black coat. A purple long-sleeved shirt with a diamond-shaped mesh motif open on the right side underneath. A black tie with a cross on it. A black buckled belt. Black pants. Dark brown shoes.
Personality
- Collected: Kyrie rarely loses her composure, even in situations that are disadvantageous to her.
- Analytical: Kyrie almost always analyzes people and situations using chessboard thinking, considering the reasons behind even the smallest actions.
- Obsessively Devoted to Rudolf: Kyrie has an extreme devotion and attraction toward Rudolf, bordering on obsession. Before marriage, she was sly and tried to get rid of girls who went after him, and had a child with him to have him for herself. She displayed knowledge of financial affairs to set herself apart. When she and Asumu were both pregnant, she did not give up and wanted her child to be superior and acknowledged by Rudolf.
- Holds Grudges: Kyrie holds grudges, particularly against Asumu, who she believes stole Rudolf. She wrote curses toward Asumu in her diary and plotted to kill her, but Asumu died first. Even after Asumu's death, Kyrie hated her and to an extent hated Battler, envious that Asumu could give birth and she could not. She got rid of every picture of Asumu in Rudolf's house and sent them to Battler. She eventually developed a brother-sister relationship with Battler, though she acted this way only because it was mature. She claimed not to care if Battler died, but would let him live since Ange would be sad. In Twilight of the Golden Witch, Kyrie breaks down upon learning Battler was her biological son all along.
- Sociopathic: In Requiem of the Golden Witch, Kyrie and Rudolf were the only ones who thought the gold could not be taken outside the island and that the one billion cash card was the only usable fortune. Kyrie shows pragmatic behavior and sociopathic tendencies, not finding anything wrong with killing and enjoying it if she gains something and resolves her problems.
Goals
- Marry Rudolph (Succeeded).
- Kill the entire family and take the gold (Failed).
Relationships
Rudolf Ushiromiya
Kyrie is Rudolf's wife. During family conferences, Kyrie occasionally converses with others—something Rudolf dislikes. Kyrie makes a conscious effort not to make Rudolf feel inferior because of this. In situations where Kyrie is able to involve herself, she can corner people in negotiation—a skill Rudolf appreciates.
Kyrie is Battler's stepmother, though Battler himself remarks that their relationship feels more like that of siblings. Kyrie does not consider Battler to be her son and sometimes treated him coldly simply because he was Asumu's child. In Twilight of the Golden Witch, Kyrie breaks down upon learning that Battler—whom she had resented all those years—was her biological son all along.
Kyrie is Ange's mother and appeared to care for her deeply, as she spared Battler's life knowing it would make Ange sad. However, in Requiem of the Golden Witch, it is revealed that Kyrie viewed Ange as nothing more than a chain to hold Rudolf, never truly loving her as a daughter.

Notable Techniques
Firearms Proficiency
Kyrie displays proficiency in wielding Winchester Rifles, being capable of aiming exactly where one's brain would be.
Envy
During magic battles, Kyrie displays an incredibly high envy level due to the years of jealousy she felt toward Asumu for giving birth to Battler. Any opponent whose power is fueled by envy will be weakened and slowed to a crawl and their punches not capable of even breaking through a wooden door when prior they could make a crater in concrete.
Standard Attacks (A Button)
Short-ranged, low damage dealing attacks, the typical fighter's attack, however these attacks come out fast[12].
Standard Attacks (B Button)
Average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks, these move also at decent speed[12].
Standard Attack (C Button)
High-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[12].
Partner Switch
The fighters can switch in with their partner fighter during battle[12].
Throw
A typical throw attack, can be countered if the opponent uses inputs throw at the same time[12].
Specials
When the special gauge is up, a character can utilize their special attacks[12].
EX Specials
Stronger specials that take away one of the fighters stocks[12].
Super
The fighter's super attack that causes two stocks to use[12].
Break Limit
A break limit is a gauge dictating how long fighters can block and guard from attacks before it breaks[12].
Touch
Guard Touch is a method to counter against guard breaks to temporarily stun the enemy[12].
Knockback Guard Touch causes the enemy to knockback from the counter[12].
Damage Touch is a combo breaker that causes the opponent to fly far away[12]. Though damage touch greatly increases the charge recovery time[12].
Assault Touch is an invicible dash attack that has the fighter crash into the opponent[12]. Though it greatly increases the charge recovery time[12]. Assault Touch can go through special attacks[12].
Stunning
Fighters can combo a fighter enough to where they enter a state where they're dizzy[12]. In this state, they cannot do bursts.
Metaworld Gauge
A red gauge appears beneath the timer. Once fully charged, a fighter can activate Meta-World at the cost of one stock, which alters the stage's appearance[14]. While Meta-World is active, the passive abilities of the activating fighter takes effect. The fighter also gains access to their meta attacks for the duration[14], as long as they continue performing the correct button inputs. The opponent can cancel Meta-World by activating it themselves as soon as it is declared[14]. In response, the first fighter may reactivate it again, provided they still have enough stocks[14].
Blue Truths
Blue Truths were introduced when Beatrice allowed Battler to use them in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, but the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid. For example, "There are five master keys" is not a valid blue truth as it does not deny the witch. Instead, it must be phrased as "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"
Blue truths allege that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter. Witches can use blue truths too, as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent, forcing the opponent to disprove the blue with a red truth.
Blue truths not only refute red truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter.
Purple Truths
Purple Truths were introduced by Bernkastel during the final game. Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, only the culprit is capable of lying in purple statements.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Human World: Kyrie has shown to try and use deception and quickly kill people with a gun.
- Meta World: Kyrie will summon Leviathan and nullify one's abilities with her envy compared to theirs.
Weaknesses
- Truth Weaknesses
- Blue Truth: Blue Truths can only be used to deny the opponent's position[15], it cannot be used to make an assertion unless it specifically is worded in a way that denies the opponent's position[15].
- Purple Statement: Purple Truths hold the same power as red truths, however the culprit can lie in purple statements, making it harder to be able to tell when it is the truth or not[18].
- Sisters of Purgatory Weaknesses: Their seven stakes of purgatory cannot target pure people who have not committed one of the seven deadly sins or people who have a strong resistance to magical power[27].
- Magic Weaknesses: Magic requires risk, every kind of magic carries its own risk and weaknesses[28].
- Unique Weaknesses: Kyrie has an immense jealously issue, down to the point that she's willing to do anything to get Rudolf.
Explanations
Rokkenjima
Rokkenjima is an island in the Izu Archipelago South of Tokyo[29], being a small island no more than six miles across and owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family[29]. The island is plentiful with wildlife (specifically large flocks of seagulls) being left largely untouched by the Ushiromiya family and they only disappear to incite disaster occurring[30]. The island was bought by the head of the Ushiromiya Family after the great Kanto earthquake nearly brought the clan to ruin in 1923[30].
During the events of Episode 3 and onward, Rokkenjima entered a state of being a layered world, where both scientific and magical theories coexist thus neither side can cancel out the others arguments[22].
Ushiromiya Family
A wealthy family that annually goes to Rokkenjima island for family gatherings[29]. There was a time when the great Kanto earthquake brought the Ushiromiya clan to ruin in 1923 but the head of the Ushiromiya family used his considerable talent and astonishingly good luck to revive the family's fortunes, being the one to have bought Rokkenjima where he makes his home[30]. This is done due to his legendary ten tons of gold that he used as the foundation of his fortune[31], which other members of the Ushiromiya family are trying to get through inheritance of finding the location of the gold[1]. According to Kinzou Ushiromiya he got ten tons of gold by making a contract with the witch Beatrice[31].
Those that marry into the Ushiromiya family are not treated the same as those born by blood into it[1], they are never allowed to wear the family's crest even after marrying into it and are treated like a complete outsider due to not sharing the blood[1] being considered by some of the family members "glorified maid-servant"[1] and insulted at the idea of receiving any orders from those that do not share the blood[1].
The family is sat in according to the line of succession which is as follows:[1] Head of the Family, Kinzou Ushiromiya[1] -> Future Head of House, Krauss Ushiromiya (Jessica's Father)[1] -> Second in Line, Eva Ushiromiya (George's Mother)[1] -> Third in Line, Rudolf Ushiromiya (Battler's Father)[1] -> Fourth in Line, Rosa Ushiromiya (Maria's Mother)[1] -> Fifth in Line, Jessica Ushiromiya[1] -> Sixth in Line, George Ushiromiya[1] -> Seventh in Line, Battler Ushiromiya[32] -> Eight in Line, Maria Ushiromiya[1] -> Ninth in Line, Natsuhi Ushiromiya (Jessica's Mother)[1] -> Tenth in Line, Hideoyoshi Ushiromiya (George's Father)[1] -> Eleventh in Line, Kyrie Ushiromiya (Rudolph's Second Wife)[1]
Spirit Attunement
It's explained by the family servant Chiyo Kumasawa that every human being has the ability to sense the presence of ghost, but this affinity gradually fades with age, characters like Maria Ushiromiya being the youngest of the family is able to sense oncoming calamities and disasters[29].
Witch of Rokkenjima
The Witch of Rokkenjima is a legend[30] that was told to the children of the Ushiromiyas about how Beatrice comes on dark, stormy nights wandering out of the forest in search of human sacrifices[1]. With this legend also comes a mystery with Beatrice's epitaph that reads as follows:
If you seek the Golden Land, follow the river and seek the key downstream, you will find a village. In this village, seek the shore of which two will speak. There the key to the Golden Land sleeps.Whoever finds the eky should follow these directions to the Golden Land.
On the first night, offer up as sacrifices the six the key chooses.
On the second night, those who remain will tear apart the two who are close.
On the third night, those who remain will praise my noble name.
On the fourth night, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth night, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth night, gouge the belly and kill.
On the seventh night, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth night, gouge the foot and kill.
On the night night, the witch will revive, and none shall be left alive.
On the tenth night, the journey will end, and you shall reach the capital in which the gold dwells.
The witch will praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold in the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be the ressurection of love lost. One shall be the witch, put into an eternal sleep.
Rest in peace, My beloved witch, Beatrice.
—The Witch's Epitaph Manga
Behold the sweetfish river running through my beloved hometown. You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream in search of the key.
As you travel down it, you will see a village. In that village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.

—The Witch's Epitaph Original Japanese Text
Despite it being a legend, Beatrice the witch is real and exists[33].
It is also revealed by Genji that Beatrice was the second lover of Kinzou who perished before the mansion was built and he spent years focusing on his dark arts in order to revive her[34].
Debates
There is a plane that watches the regular plane where one can deal with debating, effectively the same as a chess game[36], effectively being the same as viewing them from a different plane[36] where witches can simply restart over and over the game, the number of times they can play being entirely up to them[36].
Gameboards can have witches effectively get everything they want, making it harder to prove them wrong during a debate[37]. One can tweak facts previously established on the game board to effectively create new rules and truths[38].
Gameboards can have turns stalled if one of the members refuse to continue[22], one can even fall into the reality of the game board[22].
Death is also handled differently in the gameboard where the lost of a piece means they simply bide their time on the side of the chessboard[22]. One's voice cannot reach into the Game Board[39].
Along with this it has no effect on anything in the main world[40].
It is established further in Battler's game board against Eva Beatrice that witches are allowed to[41][42] resurrect the dead for testimony[41] the human side cannot use this move even if there's witches on their side[41]. Along with this, witches can[42] bind one in solid undeniable red truths that they cannot break out of unless they can deny the truth[42]. Though red can also be used to fully deny a witch[42] exposing the answers and destroying all the magic[42].
Witches can also add new pieces into the Gameboard that function as detectives[43].
Each gameboard is its own world with each one's conclusion having an effect on reality[43]. For example, Eva Ushiromiya being the only survivor in one of the gameboards allowed her to live in the real world and escape the island, even when Ange found other bottles that listed the other game worlds endings.
Each gameboard exists as one small game in the endless sea of Fragments[44].
Pawns
Pawns are pieces on the game board set by the people in the Metaworld.
Some pieces have awareness that they're pieces on the game board[45].
The rights a pawn are given within a game allow them to enforce their rights within the gameboard making them able to push others off of them if it gets in the way of their role in the game[46].
The injuries pawns receive in a game board[16] or events they experience within a game board[16] have no effect on those in the metaworld[47]. Battler even makes note that the versions of him and Beatrice on the game board aren't actually them but just pawns under the Game Master's control[48].
Pawns cannot do what it deems impossible, and will execute actions best suited to the original personality[48], Dlanor notes that due to this, if Battler and Beatrice of the game board were in the same position as the pawn they would have done the same thing[48]. Battler makes note that the people within the chessboard aren't a meter metaphor, they really are chessboard pieces[49].
Game Masters
Game Masters are the controllers of the game board. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[50].
In these games, they are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[51] with these gameboard stories being compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[51].
The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[49].
Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[52].
Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[53]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[54].
Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[55].
Battler as Game Master learns how difficult in reality game board stories are to construct[56] with Beatrice constantly agonizing over contradictions in her story and a constant battle with logical fallacies[56] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[56].
Noted during Ange and Featherine's discussion that the Game Master is allowed to smoothly alter their plot at will[57].
Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[58], known as "the right to spectate"[58].
Death in the Gameboard
Death in the Game Board occurs in two ways[56] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[56], the other being the death of being outside of the game[56] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore, Beatrice gave up her victory during the previous game causing her to die and disappear[56] thus she will never come back to life[56].
It is later revealed that Beatrice as the game master made all of these stories as an attempt to hide the true story in Rokkenjima of the Ushiromiya's all being killed by Rudolf and Kyrie before Eva killed both of them[59].
Truths
Red Truths
| “ | In that case... From now on, when I speak the truth, I will use red. | „ |
| ~ Beatrice introducing the Red Truth |
During the gameboard between Battler and Beatrice, she introduced the concept of red truths, where when she speaks the truth, she will use red[38]. Everything said in red is the truth[38], when speaking the truth one is under no obligation to provide further proof that will confirm the truth of what they say[38]. They cannot[38] be used[38] for things where they cannot give an explanation with a red truth[38]. Red truths can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided[38]. It is normally advisable to not use red truths when one already has the advantage[60]. They can be used even to insult one as if it was the truth[61] along with being used to fix quick mistakes[61]. In Episode 3 when explaining red truths again Beatrice notes everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute[62]. Battler finds out the loophole to red truths as they're a double-edge sword that can cut one down if they're not too careful with it, where the red is actually information that exposes the truth and allows one to formulate a counterattack if used incorrectly[63].
The red truth is defined as an absolute truth, a tool available to witches[15]. It is later shown that witches can permit humans to use Red Truths[17].
Red Truths[17] cannot be used[17] to force oneself to speak in red when they cannot which will cause them to suffocate[17].
It is noted by Ronove that there are no red truths in the Human World[45].
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing[64].
Red Truths can only be said about actual truth[57], if a witch's trick contradicts the red truth then it is a lie which breaks the rules.
Battler later reveals there are two types of red truths, one for red that applies to a specific game board and a red truth that is shared across all game boards and can operate in the world outside of the cat box too[65].
Blue Truths
Beatrice: As of now, Battler, I will allow you to use the blue.Battler: Blue...? Meaning that I can demand that you repeat my words if I say them in "blue"? Beatrice: Not quite. Your requests could be concerning any minute detail. But the blue truth must deny the witch's position, or it is not valid. Battler: ?
Beatrice: For example: "There are five master keys." This is merely a confirmation of the number of keys and does not deny the witch. In order to use the blue, you must change your phrasing. In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room! ...And by doing so, you have now forced the witch to respond.
Blue Truths are something Beatrice allowed Battler to use in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, however, the catch is that the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid[15].
For example, a blue truth cannot be used to claim "There are five master keys." as that does not deny the witch, instead the phrasing must be "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"[15].
Blue truths alleges that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter[15].
However, witches can use blue truths too as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent where the opponent must disporve the blue with a red truth[17].
Blue Truths not only refute Red Truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter[16].
Golden Truths
| “ | The Golden Truth... It is the divine truth, derived through different means than the red truth. Its power is equal to the red truth- sometimes inferior, but other times superior!! | „ |
| ~ Dlanor on the Gold Truth |
Golden Truths were first introduced when Battler raised to the level of a game master and used it to prove the corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it[66]. However, golden truths can only be used by the Game Master[66] along with the strength of the truth varying, its power is equal to a red truth; sometimes inferior but other times superior[66].
Purple Truths
| “ | Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, the culprit alone is capable of lying in purple statements. | „ |
During the final game made by Bernkastel, she introduced a new statement known as "Purple Statements" (otherwise Purple Truths)[18], Battler directly asks what they are with Bernkastel responding that it's a rule devised to make the story easier to understand, purple statements have the same power as red truth, however, only the culprit can lie in purple statements[18].
Souls
One's soul can linger even after they are killed[60].
Kinzou nearly resisted through his soul being erased until a red truth was placed on him[67].
Fate
When something is fated to happen it is hard to change such, if a vase is broken even if a witch uses magic to remember its original state the ultimate fate "the vase was smashed" has not been changed thus it will remember the true state and break[62].
The Endless Witch
The infinite realm that all witches ought to aspire to, the endless witch is free of all worldy suffering, certain to eternal bliss[62]. Life and Death are empty concepts to the Endless Witch[62].
The Endless Witch succession has them pass their most secret arts to a single pupil, once they pass down their arts they retire to further stem their propagation[68].
Normal custom includes that a witch from another sect makes a recommendation before a succession may occur[68].
Lambdadelta recommended EVA and Bernkastel recommended Ange[68].
Initially the name Beatrice was not passed down but it later became customary for the name to be inherited as well with EVA following suit giving ANGE the name of Beatrice[68].
Knox's DecalogueThe ten commandments created by Dlanor A. Knox's father and used in heresy trials.
Knox's 1st: It is forbidden for the culprit to be anyone not mentioned in the early part of the story.
Knox's 2nd: It is forbidden for supernatural agencies to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 3rd: It is forbidden for hidden passages to exist.
Knox's 4th: It is forbidden for unknown drugs or hard-to-understand scientific devices to be used.
Knox's 5th: (not included)
Knox's 6th: It is forbidden for accident or intuition to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 7th: It is forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.
Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented.
Knox's 9th: It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and interpretations be heard.
Knox's 10th: It is forbidden for a character to disguise themselves as another without any clues.
The debate over the interpretation of these laws continues to this very day, and it has become the source of countless unfair controversies. While fundamentalists call any infringement upon these commandments heresy, revisionists point out that many canonized geniuses have violated these rules.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 5 Tips Knox's Decalogue
Knox's Decalogue were first mentioned by Bernkastel as a way to refute arguments used against Lambdadelta in their game.
Duel Pistol SetA set of demon duel pistols prepared by Zepar and Furfur. The number of shots loaded depends on the format of the duel. In most cases, it holds just a single round.
The emotions of the duelers are loaded into them, and if one of their bullets grazes any part of the body, the concept of the target will be denied without exception.
In the past, duels were performed in the classic style with swords, but this took a great deal of time before an outcome was reached, which displeased certain impatient theatergoing witches.
For this reason, a duel weapon that would always kill with a single shot was asked for and created.
Of course, this weapon is not particularly popular among theatergoing witches who are fans of good-old drawn out, dramatic duels.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 6 Duel Pistol Set
A pistol set created by Zepar and Furfur for duels that were made in order to reconcile impatient theatergoing witches.
Even if one grazes the other with a bullet, the concept of the target wil be denied without exception.
City of Books
"The Honored City of Books Curated By Her Majesty The Witch Of Theater, Drama, and observation", a massive "library" that contains all stories, including[71] where the entire stories in Umineko are merely a single book[71].
Virgilia describes it as a place where the witches who traverse the sea of fragments collect those fragments in text form and store them[72].
The City of Books is sacred territory under the administration of the Senate and there are holy barriers erected around it[72].
Only Witches of the Senate are allowed in the City of Books, though non-members can be given a special invitation that temporarily grants them entrance tot he sacred territory, but the invitations specify arriving on the dot, a second late tot he party's starting time and they automatically lose the effect[72].
Creators
Creators are mentioned multiple times throughout the series, however Lambdadelta defines them more properly, noting they are omniscient all-powerful beings beyond even witches[73].
Canon
Manga
The manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[74].
Anime
There are some beliefs the anime for Umineko is non-canon, however this is not true. In an interview, Ryukishi directly stated he is all for anime and manga adaptations of his works[75], which adds on to a later interview where he noted that he fully overlooks and supervises the anime suggesting one to watch all of the versions of Umineko[76].
Minor Differences
While it is noted that one won't be able to discuss all mysteries by looking at just the anime, Ryukishi not only notes[76], though as explained in the same quote, this is due to the impossiblity of having the mystery written the exact same way across different media, an anime cannot perfectly replicate a visual novel and vice versa, thus the anime is limtied in the amount of clues it can receive as opposed to the visual novel. Ryukishi himself directly notes that things need to be condensed to fit in the manga or anime versions but there's also far more fake leads in the original compared to the manga and anime and he believes one should enter into Umineko from the type of media they are most comfortable with and then look at the different formats to see the information in a new light[77].
Trivia
- Kyrie was named after the Ragnarok Online skill "Kyrie Eleison," while Asumu was named after the skill "Assumptio." In earlier updates of the game, these two skills could not be used together, making the naming a deliberate in-joke, as Ryukishi07 acknowledged that "when Kyrie is around, Asumu disappears."[78].

Misconceptions
Witches lose their powers as soon as one does not believe in them/One can simply debate a witches existence away
Throughout most of Umineko, Battler and Beatrice are debating over her existence, and Beatrice's strength slowly comes back with each game[32] due in part to the hesitation within Battler's heart[32]. Battler even establishes that simply refusing to believe in Beatrice is not enough to beat her and instead will turn him more and more into the defensive until he's simply overpowered and loses[32].
It should be noted too during majority of the first episode, none of the characters left alive believe in Beatrice asides from Maria Ushiromiya, yet she was still able to manifest in the end as she killed everyone[79].
On top of this, simply not believing would not be enough to work; Beatrice makes direct note that Battler has a strong resistance to magic thus her magic cannot reach him[79].
Of extra note, Battler directly has Bernkastel helping him[80], Lambdadelta slightly raising the chances of Battler winning[81], and Beatrice's own teacher explaining to Battler how to counter Beatrice's arguments[22]. Beatrice's teacher mainly being the reason for why Battler was able to argue against Beatrice's points[82]. It was even further noted by Lambdadelta and Bernkastel that Battler couldn't win Beatrice's game even with all of the sloppy loose ends it had and the amount of help he received[83]. Battler himself realizes while Beatrice faces against Bernkastel that she was going easy on him in all their games so that it would be a fair fight between them, constantly giving Battler hints until he got used to the game[53].
Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch[84].
It's further noted too that people who've lost their sight also lose all anti-magic power and magical resistance[85].
Even while Battler was battling against Eva-Beatrice, he couldn't truly deny her witch form for good and required Beatrice to use a red truth to kill off all magic there[41][42].
Kinzou further reaffirms that Battler was born with more of his anti-magical blood than anyone else[86].
It's noted by Maria during her status as the Witch of Origins that all humans are born with toxins that block magic[87].
It's noted by Greed that humans are walking blobs of anti-magic though she can manifest as long as a witch like Ange concentrates[87].
Despite all the anti-magic toxins, due to Ange fully believing in magic and her determination being strong she was able to have her familiars interact with the human world to kill all the guards that were after her[88][89].
Eva even tries to argue that there's no way for Ange to call the seven sisters of purgatory due to her anti-magic toxins, yet she still does[89].
Thus simply denying the existence of a witch is not enough to defeat them, as Battler himself with a narrative strong resistance to magic needs a lot of help to truly even counter Beatrice. On top of this, it's specifically noted in-universe that humans built up a strong anti-magic toxin overtime that became strong enough to deny a witch's existence[90], thus this is not a weakness that applies out of universe unless a series has a similar mechanic.
Magic Isn't Real
This comes from the arguments of debates over whether or not it's truly just characters having mental issues as a way to cope with scenarios.
For example, Maria believes she is the daughter of the Holy Ghost as a way to cope with the fact that her mom abused her whenever she asked about her dad.
However, it is proven that the Meta-World is an actual place[35] that witches reside in and there are many scenes throughout the series that can't truly be explained through characters hallucinations.
Such as Ange having her familiars directly interact with the human world and kill all of its people[88][89].
The truth of "magic isn't real"/"magic is real" debate is also answered multiple times in the Umineko franchise.
Using the final talk between Beatrice and Ange, Beatrice does a magic trick and asks Ange if it is magic of a sleight of hand[91] with Ange noting it's a cheap trick but it is also magic as Beatrice has taught her this magic to spread to others to give them happiness. No matter the magic one cannot use it properly and cannot see it without love[91].
It is also repeated multiple times throughout the series how there is no one true truth, it is everyone's point of view as to what their truth is.
Effectively magic is real but also isn't, it is in the situation of a catbox.
It should also be noted that the manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[74], giving all the answers for the reader to conclude.
Witches can easily die to guns
This statement is noted by Ronove noting that witches are weak to weapons such as guns and require anti-bullet barriers in order to be made[84].
The issue is within the scan itself, within the context of Umineko, bullets specifically contain anti-magical power that cuts right through witches and demons.

He answered that in the world of Umineko, there’s the Chessboard, then the Meta Room, then the Witches World and it goes up like that. Different worlds are hierarchically piled up. After reading that, there was nothing left but to take her up on the challenge. It had been awhile since Lambdadelta had played around with a game board of substance. Since Bernkastel had gone out of her way to pass it along, it was sure to be an entertaining one.
Lambdadelta touched the Fragment.
The moment she did, an array of constellations was suspended in the air, pivoting around the Fragment and forming a miniature galaxy.
"…Oh, now this is nostalgic. So the stage is set in the Japanese countryside. Reminds me of Hinamizawa. …Though, it looks like this place is more desolate than Hinamizawa ever was. …Right then, time to pick my piece. Which one should I choose?"
Lambdadelta held out a hand, and white, black, blue, and red pieces in various shapes and sizes, reminiscent of chess, appeared in the air.
"Which one would be best? …Hmm…"
To participate in a game within a Fragment, you first must send in a piece. In other words, this was much like the character select screen of a video game.
After folding her arms and giving it some deep thought, she eventually settled on a black piece.
She wasn't sure of the situation, but if the point of the game was to survive, she figured her best option would be a sturdy, clever all-rounder with a strong desire to live.
"…In which case, it's gotta be this piece. Let's go, my other self."
She plucked the piece out of midair, then tossed it into the galaxy.
As soon as she did, an infinite number of dazzling lights scattered about, and within a moment, the world was completely buried in a sea of stars.
Within those bright lights, Lambdadelta's consciousness was sucked away…" - ↑ 22.0 22.1 22.2 22.3 22.4 22.5 Umineko When They Cry - Episode 3 - Banquet of the Golden Witch Chapter 8

- ↑ 74.0 74.1 Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: The character of Sayo Yasuda in Umineko is interesting. What were your thoughts in Sayo's creation? Additionally, what were your thoughts on her expansion in the Umineko manga?
Ryukishi07: The secret of the character of Sayo is the core of Umineko's story, so her inner workings and development were designed carefully and with the utmost complexity.
In the original version, in order to leave room for imagination for the reader to solve the mystery, I chose not to draw Sayo's secrets in great detail (of course, it's still possible to grasp, but I didn't show things in a way where everyone would get it.)
With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a "period" to the "sentence" that is the world of Umineko.
Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko's eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.
Thus, all of the episode of Sayo that appeared in the EP8 manga is the official answer to the world of Umineko.
By no means is the manga version an individual interpretation. It is an official answer from me, Ryukishi07." - ↑ Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: There are many of your works that have been adapted into anime or manga. How is it decided as to which works receive adaptations?
Ryukishi07: Basically, we receive an offer from the company, and we accept it.
So far, the availability of anime and manga adaptations of our works is made possible by courteous cooperation with such companies, and for this I am sincerely grateful.
So, for those who are rooting for more anime and manga of our work, I would be happy if you could support the Japanese companies responsible. (laughs)" - ↑ 76.0 76.1 Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""Will people be able to enjoy 'the fun of speculation' in the anime and manga versions too?"
Ryuukishi: Of course. I have been supervising those very carefully. In Higurashi, there were some problems with presentation, and they were allowed to do as they pleased in certain areas. But this time, I have been checking very carefully to make sure there are 'no misconceptions in the presentation' this time, so I think people will be able to significantly enjoy speculation in those as well.
Keiya: In that case, will people who only watch the anime be able to speculate about the series?
Ryuukishi: There is an overwhelming difference in the amount of information contained in an anime and the original work, so it will probably be best to play the original as far as 'the number of hints' is concerned. But as I just said, mysteries in pictures and mysteries in text focus on foreshadowing in very different ways, so things that you didn't notice in the original might feel very out of place in the anime. Then when you return to the original and read the same scene again, you might suddenly feel that something is very suspicious in certain places...... The opposite holds true as well, since some places might not leave an impact when on screen, but the text would lead one to wonder "why is this part being described so thoroughly?" So it might be useful to see it through different mediums." - ↑ Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""If you were to assign a difficulty to the other formats, would you say that they're easier or harder than the original?"
Ryuukishi: I believe that the primary factors that decide the difficulty of a puzzle are the amount of hints and the amount of information. In that sense, you might be able to say that the original will actually be the easiest. As you know, things need to be condensed to fit in manga or anime versions. You can't just copy every line word for word and use the same description, so the amount of information naturally shrinks. Because of this, the original will always be easy as far as the quantity of information is concerned. Although there are also more fake leads in the original (laughs). But I wonder if that makes the difficulty equal between the two. Just like Higurashi, I think you should enter into Umineko from the type of media that you are most comfortable with. Then, when you also look at the different formats and see the information in a new light, you might be able to get close to something." - ↑ Episode 1 Shinsou Kaimei Dokuhon "BT: "Did you notice Kyrie and Asumu were named after skills in RO?" (...) Ryukishi07: "Yes, yes. So when Kyrie is around, Asumu disappears (laughs).""
