Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Maria Ushiromiya’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Maria grew up in a lonely household, as her mother Rosa was often away at work and her father had traveled abroad before she was born and never returned. Many people saw her as a pitiful and strange child, though she did not understand why they viewed her that way, believing herself to be quite happy. On one occasion, Rosa showed her a photograph of herself in a bikini with a tanned man, whom she identified as Maria's father. However, when Maria asked to see it again, Rosa became angry and claimed the photo never existed. Over time, Maria began to question her identity and found that even her teachers could not provide answers to her many questions.

One day, a priest visited her school, and Maria asked him whether it was strange not to have a father. The priest told her it was not unusual and mentioned that Jesus was also born of a virgin birth. Misinterpreting the meaning of the Bible and coincidentally sharing her name with the mother of Jesus, Maria regained a sense of self and felt that many of her questions had been answered. This led her to believe she was special and different from others, sparking her interest in mysticism and the occult.

Later, she met Beatrice during a visit to Rokkenjima and became close friends with her. They often discussed occult subjects and magic circles, with Beatrice demonstrating magical abilities. Together, they created the Golden Land and many new friends.

Legend of the Golden Witch
While on her way to Rokkenjima, Maria noticed that the torii gate normally found on the island was absent.

Throughout the episode, Maria displays an unsettling demeanor whenever discussing witches and Beatrice, often showcasing her knowledge of magic circles and the occult.

She ultimately becomes the last survivor. A message bottle containing a note written by Maria was later discovered.

Turn of the Golden Witch
She attempts to flee the island alongside Rosa, but they are surrounded and devoured by a group of goats.

Banquet of the Golden Witch
She is killed alongside Rosa after being subjected to prolonged torture by EVA-Beatrice, marking the second twilight.

Alliance of the Golden Witch
In 1998, Maria's spirit resides within her grimoire and communicates with Ange, teaching her how to use magic and revealing her witch form as MARIA. Flashbacks show Maria's past with Sakutarou and Rosa, including the moment MARIA awakens to black magic with Beatrice's assistance and repeatedly tortures Rosa.

In 1986, Maria is put to a test by Kinzo and is the only cousin to succeed. In the Tea Party, Battler discovers Maria's body lying peacefully in the dining hall, believed to have been killed by poison.

'End of the Golden Witch
She was a victim of the first twilight, found with her throat slit on the cousins' room on the second floor of the guesthouse.

Dawn of the Golden Witch
In the Guest House, Maria gathers with her cousins, Shannon, and Erika Furudo to discuss the legend of Beatrice. When Erika begins to question it, Maria throws a tantrum and describes how Beatrice once filled a closed, empty cup with candy using magic. Erika taunts her and challenges her to prove it, despite the others' attempts to intervene. The argument escalates into a full witches' battle in the Meta-World, where Maria and Erika exchange Red and Blue Truths. Maria demonstrates the spell that fills the cup with candy while it remains sealed and claims Erika cannot replicate it due to her anti-magic toxin.

To Maria's surprise, Erika performs the trick anyway by opening the cup and filling it with candy while Maria's eyes are closed, dismissing it as a simple trick. Sakutarou defends Maria and negotiates a truce between the two. Returning to the real world in tears, the others, unaware of the Meta-World conflict, scold Erika for bullying her. Maria soon begins to laugh and reaffirms her belief in magic, stating that Erika's toxin will prevent her from ever seeing the happiness it brings. She is then taken upstairs to play with her cousins and soon reverts to her usual cheerful self.

During the love trial, Maria is targeted by Shannon, who crushes her with a shield to bypass Sakutarou's diplomatic immunity. Erika later attempts to examine her corpse.

Requiem of the Golden Witch
Kyrie murdered Maria during the Rokkenjima Massacre.

Twilight of the Golden Witch
In Bernkastel's game, Maria survives until the very end. She correctly deduces that Rudolf, Kyrie, and Battler are the culprits just moments before they shoot her to death.

Appearance

General Description: Maria has short, light brown hair, fair skin, and violet eyes. When she smiles, she sometimes appears to have a snaggle tooth. She is of short stature due to her young age and weighs 28 kilograms (61 pounds).

Clothing/Outfit: A pale pink long-sleeve button-down shirt with frills of the same color on the shoulders and collar. Over this, she wears a black corset with the One-Winged Eagle adorned on the left side. A black skirt with a pink stripe at the bottom and a lacy slip underneath. White knee-high socks with a lacy rim at the top. Red shoes that buckle over the top of the foot and around the ankle. A pink purse.

Witch of Origins (MARIA): A black dress with red bows and a pink cravat. A One-Winged Eagle staff that she channels her magic through.

Accessories: A small black crown on her head, tied with a red ribbon whose bow sits just under her chin. This crown is worn in both forms.

Personality

  • Acts Younger Than Her Age: Maria is a fourth grader who acts much younger than her age. This often gets her in trouble with her mother and earns her slaps on the cheek.
  • Changes When Talking About Witches: When talking about witches, Maria's personality changes and she acts creepily. She becomes defensive when someone rejects witches and magic, which she believes help her become happy.
  • Incapable of Lying: Maria is not capable of lying. Even if what she says proves false, she repeats the opposite because she believes in it with all her spirit. She argues with Battler over Beatrice's existence and refuses to accept magic could not exist.
  • Provokes Others About Magic: Willard and Jessica theorize Maria changes her tone and behavior when speaking of magic to provoke others, rooted in her desire to be considered important and worthy of being heard by adults.
  • Loves Rosa Deeply: Maria deeply loves her mother Rosa and believes Rosa's abusive side is a witch possessing her. She defended Rosa's actions in her diary and through Sakutarou's thoughts. She stated she does not need anyone but her mother.
  • Loses Trust in Rosa: After a social worker claimed Rosa left her alone to go on vacation and Rosa destroyed Chiester 556 and Sakutarou, Maria lost all trust in her mother and began resenting her abuse. This drove her to revolt against her mother and family in favor of Beatrice and the witches, though she still desires Rosa's love.
  • Bullied at School: Maria was bullied for low grades, preferring to play with toys rather than children, and having no father. She says she does not care as long as she has Sakutarou, but suffers while hiding it, telling Ange she is happy to be tormented rather than another child.
  • References Witches as a Coping Mechanism: Maria's references to witches come from behavior. When Rosa gets violent, she is seen as the Black Witch by Maria. The same goes for Beatrice.

Goals

  • Become a witch (Succeeded).
  • Reach the Golden Land (Succeeded).

Relationships

Rosa Ushiromiya

Maria is Rosa's only daughter and serves as her sole emotional outlet—a person with whom Rosa can release the immense stress, anger, and sadness that have plagued her throughout her life. While Rosa is often abusive when angry and neglectful when exhausted, she feels profound guilt and shame for her behavior, frequently deeming herself an incapable mother. She attempts to compensate by making promises to Maria that she ultimately forgets, or by spoiling her daughter with toys and candies. Though Rosa's true feelings for Maria are called into question multiple times, it is ultimately shown that she will do anything to protect both Maria's health and her future.

Beatrice

Maria is a devoted believer in Beatrice and delights in playing with her whenever she visits the island. Beatrice has taught Maria various forms of magic and, in Alliance of the Golden Witch, provides assistance by enabling Maria's revenge and the repeated torture of Rosa. Maria is consistently among the last to die in games where Beatrice holds control. In Banquet of the Golden Witch, Beatrice even offers Maria a quick, painless death after comforting her upon witnessing the suffering inflicted by EVA-Beatrice—a stark contrast to the swift yet more gruesome fate she gives Rosa moments later.

Ange Ushiromiya

Maria is Ange's older cousin through Ange's paternal aunt Rosa. Ange was initially very close to Maria, often playing with her cousin and her toys, including Sakutarou. Maria even allowed Ange into the exclusive alliance of witches she had created with Beatrice. However, when Ange made fun of her one day—having been told by her mother that Sakutarou was merely a plush toy and not a real being—Maria expelled Ange from her life and her magical world. She went so far as to write in her diary that she hated Ange as much as she hated Rosa after the latter destroyed Sakutarou. In 1998, Maria's spirit serves as a mentor to Ange through her diary, and Ange ultimately makes amends with her.

Codex Statistics

Grade: A. Will eventually reach S+ if she fully ascends to Creator status

Tier: Low 10-B. At least 9-B, likely Far Higher as the Witch of Truth. Will eventually reach 1-Ω if she fully ascends to Creator status

Cardinality: Finite. Will eventually reach Ω if she fully ascends to Creator status

Dimensionality: 3-D, Devoid in her Witch State

Power Source: Faith (The power of faith is the root of magic, miracles only happen to those with powerful belief[12])

Attack Potency: Below Average Human level (Maria is a nine year old girl). At least Wall level (Potency), likely Far Higher as the Witch of Origin (Witches are naturally superior to a witches familiar[13] which should make her superior to Jessica amplified by Ronove to be able to cause craters in walls with her punches[14]). Will eventually reach Absolute Infinity if she fully ascends to Creator status (Maria is noted by Beatrice to posses a level of talent so great that not only will she one day make Beatrice not even compare to her but also even rise to the height of a creator[7], with it being noted that the Witch of Origins, Maria, is perhaps a chosen girl fated to become a Creator[15]. The Creator Status are omniscient and almighty beings that can create anything and have no restrictions placed upon them to the point that they don't have the restriction of ground under their feet[16], losing even the restriction of meaning along with concepts of life and death reqaching the limits of 0 as they no longer have individuality or physicality[16]. The Creator status are sacred beings who can give birth to 1 from 0, give birth to the infinity and then return it to 0 again in a flash, free from all restrictions being effectively God[15], Beatrice noting Maria reaching Creator status would make her[2] produce one from a sea of zero[2]. Creator status "create a universe with nothing but the holy ghost" effectively meaning they themselves are God[7]). Can ignore conventional durability in the Meta-World (The Meta World is largely a conceptual plane where attacks are done[17] through the usage of truths[18]. Where witch hunters normally need to consider conceptual areas that withces escape too[19], with conceptual denials used as a primary weapon[20])

Durability: Average Human level. At least Wall level, likely Far Higher as the Witch of Origin. Will eventually reach Absolute Infinity if she fully ascends to Creator status. Existence in the Meta-World makes them very difficult to kill (Death in the Meta World is ultimately meaningless[21] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[21], the other being the death of being outside of the game[21] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore[21] effectively being a death as they refuse to come back[21], otherwise standard "death" does not exist. Even if a witch is killed in the human domain they still exist within the Meta World)

Striking Strength: Average Human Class. At least Wall Class (Potency), likely Far Higher as the Witch of Origin. Will eventually reach Absolute Infinity if she fully ascends to Creator status

Lifting Strength: Average Human Class, Higher in the Meta World. Will eventually reach Absolute Infinity if she fully ascends to Creator status

Travel Speed: Average Human Speed, Far Higher in the Meta World (Magic Augmentation can amplify one to reach the speed of sound and even surpass it including if they are being augmentated by their jealously[14]). Will eventually reach Infinite if she fully ascends to Creator status

Attack Speed: Average Human Speed, Far Higher in the Meta World. Will eventually reach Infinite if she fully ascends to Creator status

Reaction Speed: Average Human Speed, Far Higher in the Meta World. Will eventually reach Infinite if she fully ascends to Creator status

Stamina: Average, Superhuman in the Meta-World. Will eventually reach Limitless if she fully ascends to Creator status

Range: Standard Melee, up to Universal as Witch of Origins (As the Witch of Origin, Maria can create anything from nothing[7], Beatrice notes the minimum number of people needed for creation is at least two[7] yet Maria can create entire universes with nothing but the Holy Ghost by herself[7]). Will eventually reach Absolute Infinity if she fully ascends to Creator status

Intelligence: Average Intelligence. Will eventually reach Cosmic Intelligence if she fully ascends to Creator status

Knowledge: Master level (Maria has an immense knowledge of magic and the occult, along with religions and satanic scripture[22] being able to perfectly quote and recall symbols and what passage of the bible it comes from[22]. Beatrice notes Maria shows promise as a witch despite just being an apprentice[23]. Beatrice notes that Maria is able to use magic to make a force powerful enough to pin inanimate objects into the human world, where she admits even she has difficulty bringing forth a soul[2]. Maria's magical prowess is considerable[2] where if she had already become a fullyfledged witch she would not merely be an equal of Beatrice but a great and mighty witch far surpassing her own talents[2]). Will eventually reach Omniscient level if she fully ascends to Creator status

Sakutarou

  • Description: Sakutarou is Maria's best friend and main familiar she uses when combating against enemies.
  • Usage: Used as a familiar for defensive purposes.
  • Function: While Maria employs offensive attacks, Sakutarou acts for defensive, putting up diplomatic immunities such as making enemies unable to target Maria.

Notable Techniques

Creation

Maria has an innate affinity for magic thanks to her kinship with her grandfather Kinzo. As a future Creator, she can create her own spells by transcribing them into her grimoire. Some of these spells include making rain candies from the sky, making food she dislikes more palatable, and trying to make herself and her mother happy by exclaiming and singing "Uu-uu". After suffering great pain, her magic became more obscure, creating dark spells capable of making her school bullies sick or crashing the bus that carried them into a ravine.

Summoning

Through her alliance pact with Beatrice, Maria can easily summon the Seven Stakes of Purgatory together with her exclusive furniture such as Sakutarou and the Chiester Sisters.

Grimoire Enchantment

Maria enchanted her grimoire to house a piece of her soul within, allowing her to speak to Ange Ushiromiya in 1998 as a spirit.

Witch of Origins

Her power as the Witch of Origins is described as apparently weak due to her young age and inexperience, being only on the level of a mere Enchanter capable of imbuing souls into inanimate entities and creating magic objects. However, she holds the potential to create everything from the Sea of Zero. No matter how many times you multiply zero, it does not become anything if not zero, meaning she could create anything she desires from nothing without limits after one thousand years of training. For the moment, her "magic of origins" is still too weak and she can only change reality through the Endless Magic kindly granted by Beatrice and Virgilia.

Standard Attacks (A Button)

Short-ranged, low damage dealing attacks, the typical fighter's attack, however these attacks come out fast[24].

Standard Attacks (B Button)

Average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks, these move also at decent speed[24].

Standard Attack (C Button)

High-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[24].

Partner Switch

The fighters can switch in with their partner fighter during battle[24].

Throw

A typical throw attack, can be countered if the opponent uses inputs throw at the same time[24].

Specials

When the special gauge is up, a character can utilize their special attacks[24].

EX Specials

Stronger specials that take away one of the fighters stocks[24].

Super

The fighter's super attack that causes two stocks to use[24].

Break Limit

A break limit is a gauge dictating how long fighters can block and guard from attacks before it breaks[24].

Touch

Guard Touch is a method to counter against guard breaks to temporarily stun the enemy[24].

Knockback Guard Touch causes the enemy to knockback from the counter[24].

Damage Touch is a combo breaker that causes the opponent to fly far away[24]. Though damage touch greatly increases the charge recovery time[24].

Assault Touch is an invicible dash attack that has the fighter crash into the opponent[24]. Though it greatly increases the charge recovery time[24]. Assault Touch can go through special attacks[24].

Stunning

Fighters can combo a fighter enough to where they enter a state where they're dizzy[24]. In this state, they cannot do bursts.

Metaworld Gauge

A red gauge appears beneath the timer. Once fully charged, a fighter can activate Meta-World at the cost of one stock, which alters the stage's appearance[26]. While Meta-World is active, the passive abilities of the activating fighter takes effect. The fighter also gains access to their meta attacks for the duration[26], as long as they continue performing the correct button inputs. The opponent can cancel Meta-World by activating it themselves as soon as it is declared[26]. In response, the first fighter may reactivate it again, provided they still have enough stocks[26].

Red Truths

The Red Truth is an absolute truth spoken in red text, introduced by Beatrice during her game with Battler. Everything said in red is the truth, and the speaker is under no obligation to provide further proof confirming what they say. Red truths cannot be used for things where the speaker cannot give an explanation, though they can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided.

It is normally advisable not to use red truths when one already has the advantage. They can be used to insult someone as if it were the truth, and can fix quick mistakes. In Episode 3, Beatrice notes that everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute.

Battler discovers that red truths are a double-edged sword that can cut one down if used carelessly. The red is information that exposes the truth and allows a counterattack if used incorrectly.

The Red Truth is defined as an absolute truth and a tool available to witches. Witches can permit humans to use Red Truths. Red truths cannot be used to force oneself to speak in red when unable, which will cause suffocation. There are no red truths in the Human World.

The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing.

Red truths can only be said about actual truth. If a witch's trick contradicts the red truth, it is a lie which breaks the rules.

There are two types of red truths: one that applies to a specific game board and one that is shared across all game boards and can operate outside the cat box.

Blue Truths

Blue Truths were introduced when Beatrice allowed Battler to use them in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, but the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid. For example, "There are five master keys" is not a valid blue truth as it does not deny the witch. Instead, it must be phrased as "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"

Blue truths allege that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter. Witches can use blue truths too, as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent, forcing the opponent to disprove the blue with a red truth.

Blue truths not only refute red truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter.

Golden Truths

Golden Truths were introduced when Battler rose to the level of a Game Master and used one to prove a corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it. Golden truths can only be used by the Game Master. The strength of the truth varies; its power is equal to a red truth, sometimes inferior but other times superior.

Purple Truths

Purple Truths were introduced by Bernkastel during the final game. Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, only the culprit is capable of lying in purple statements.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Chess Board Debates: Characters in Umineko on the chess board largely fight in debates, normally over one's existence (notably witches or supernatural creatures), as a typical fight will not do much to either side if it's two witches or it would be unfair for a human. Game Masters normally need to construct a story in order to do a debate[21] making sure there's no paradoxes or fatal logical fallacies[21] as these all largely matter to make the debate even otherwise the witch would just win. Maria herself has only shown to debate against Erika over the existence of magic.
  • Out of Chess Board: When not cosigning to debates, characters instead decide to fight physically being able to utilize different punch and kick combos along with weapons or supernatural powers. Maria herself in her fight against Kanon showcased throwing out magic attacks while her familiar employed a diplomatic immunity that banned them from targetting or attacking Maria.

Weaknesses

Explanations

Rokkenjima

Rokkenjima is an island in the Izu Archipelago South of Tokyo[1], being a small island no more than six miles across and owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family[1]. The island is plentiful with wildlife (specifically large flocks of seagulls) being left largely untouched by the Ushiromiya family and they only disappear to incite disaster occurring[36]. The island was bought by the head of the Ushiromiya Family after the great Kanto earthquake nearly brought the clan to ruin in 1923[36].

During the events of Episode 3 and onward, Rokkenjima entered a state of being a layered world, where both scientific and magical theories coexist thus neither side can cancel out the others arguments[39].

Ushiromiya Family

A wealthy family that annually goes to Rokkenjima island for family gatherings[1]. There was a time when the great Kanto earthquake brought the Ushiromiya clan to ruin in 1923 but the head of the Ushiromiya family used his considerable talent and astonishingly good luck to revive the family's fortunes, being the one to have bought Rokkenjima where he makes his home[36]. This is done due to his legendary ten tons of gold that he used as the foundation of his fortune[3], which other members of the Ushiromiya family are trying to get through inheritance of finding the location of the gold[8]. According to Kinzou Ushiromiya he got ten tons of gold by making a contract with the witch Beatrice[3].

Those that marry into the Ushiromiya family are not treated the same as those born by blood into it[8], they are never allowed to wear the family's crest even after marrying into it and are treated like a complete outsider due to not sharing the blood[8] being considered by some of the family members "glorified maid-servant"[8] and insulted at the idea of receiving any orders from those that do not share the blood[8].

The family is sat in according to the line of succession which is as follows:[8] Head of the Family, Kinzou Ushiromiya[8] -> Future Head of House, Krauss Ushiromiya (Jessica's Father)[8] -> Second in Line, Eva Ushiromiya (George's Mother)[8] -> Third in Line, Rudolf Ushiromiya (Battler's Father)[8] -> Fourth in Line, Rosa Ushiromiya (Maria's Mother)[8] -> Fifth in Line, Jessica Ushiromiya[8] -> Sixth in Line, George Ushiromiya[8] -> Seventh in Line, Battler Ushiromiya[23] -> Eight in Line, Maria Ushiromiya[8] -> Ninth in Line, Natsuhi Ushiromiya (Jessica's Mother)[8] -> Tenth in Line, Hideoyoshi Ushiromiya (George's Father)[8] -> Eleventh in Line, Kyrie Ushiromiya (Rudolph's Second Wife)[8]

Spirit Attunement

It's explained by the family servant Chiyo Kumasawa that every human being has the ability to sense the presence of ghost, but this affinity gradually fades with age, characters like Maria Ushiromiya being the youngest of the family is able to sense oncoming calamities and disasters[1].

Witch of Rokkenjima

The Witch of Rokkenjima is a legend[36] that was told to the children of the Ushiromiyas about how Beatrice comes on dark, stormy nights wandering out of the forest in search of human sacrifices[8]. With this legend also comes a mystery with Beatrice's epitaph that reads as follows:

If you seek the Golden Land, follow the river and seek the key downstream, you will find a village. In this village, seek the shore of which two will speak. There the key to the Golden Land sleeps.

Whoever finds the eky should follow these directions to the Golden Land.

On the first night, offer up as sacrifices the six the key chooses.

On the second night, those who remain will tear apart the two who are close.

On the third night, those who remain will praise my noble name.

On the fourth night, gouge the head and kill.

On the fifth night, gouge the chest and kill.

On the sixth night, gouge the belly and kill.

On the seventh night, gouge the knee and kill.

On the eighth night, gouge the foot and kill.

On the night night, the witch will revive, and none shall be left alive.

On the tenth night, the journey will end, and you shall reach the capital in which the gold dwells.

The witch will praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold in the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be the ressurection of love lost. One shall be the witch, put into an eternal sleep.

Rest in peace, My beloved witch, Beatrice.

The Witch's Epitaph Manga

Behold the sweetfish river running through my beloved hometown.

You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream in search of the key.

As you travel down it, you will see a village. In that village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.

The one who obtains the key must then travel to the Golden Land in accordance with these rules.

On the first twilight, offer the six chosen by the key as sacrifices. On the second twilight, those who remain shall tear apart the two who are close. On the third twilight, those who remain shall praise my noble name. On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill. On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill. On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill. On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill. On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill. On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive. On the tenth twilight, at journey's end, you shall attain to the power of the Golden Land's treasures, once and for the last time.

The witch shall praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold from the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of all the dead souls. One shall be the resurrection of the love that was lost. One shall be to put the witch to sleep for all time.

Sleep peacefully, my beloved witch, Beatrice.

My beloved hometown, the sweetfish river running through it.

You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream and seek the key.

If you follow the river downstream, you will find a village. In the village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.

He who lays hand upon the key shall travel under the rules below.

At the first twilight, you shall lift up as sacrifice the six chosen by the key. At the second twilight, the surviving shall tear apart the two who are close. At the third twilight, the surviving shall praise my honorable name on high. At the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill. At the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill. At the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill. At the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill. At the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill. At the ninth twilight, the Witch shall be revived and none shall be left alive. At the tenth twilight, the journey shall end and you should reach the village of gold.

The Witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures. One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land. One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love. One shall be, to put the Witch to sleep for all time.

Sleep peacefully, my most beloved witch, Beatrice.

The Witch's Epitaph Original Japanese Text

Despite it being a legend, Beatrice the witch is real and exists[41].

It is also revealed by Genji that Beatrice was the second lover of Kinzou who perished before the mansion was built and he spent years focusing on his dark arts in order to revive her[88].

Debates

There is a plane that watches the regular plane where one can deal with debating, effectively the same as a chess game[90], effectively being the same as viewing them from a different plane[90] where witches can simply restart over and over the game, the number of times they can play being entirely up to them[90].

Gameboards can have witches effectively get everything they want, making it harder to prove them wrong during a debate[91]. One can tweak facts previously established on the game board to effectively create new rules and truths[27].

Gameboards can have turns stalled if one of the members refuse to continue[39], one can even fall into the reality of the game board[39].

Death is also handled differently in the gameboard where the lost of a piece means they simply bide their time on the side of the chessboard[39]. One's voice cannot reach into the Game Board[92].

Along with this it has no effect on anything in the main world[93].

It is established further in Battler's game board against Eva Beatrice that witches are allowed to[94][95] resurrect the dead for testimony[94] the human side cannot use this move even if there's witches on their side[94]. Along with this, witches can[95] bind one in solid undeniable red truths that they cannot break out of unless they can deny the truth[95]. Though red can also be used to fully deny a witch[95] exposing the answers and destroying all the magic[95].

Witches can also add new pieces into the Gameboard that function as detectives[96].

Each gameboard is its own world with each one's conclusion having an effect on reality[96]. For example, Eva Ushiromiya being the only survivor in one of the gameboards allowed her to live in the real world and escape the island, even when Ange found other bottles that listed the other game worlds endings.

Each gameboard exists as one small game in the endless sea of Fragments[62].

Pawns

Pawns are pieces on the game board set by the people in the Metaworld.

Some pieces have awareness that they're pieces on the game board[64].

The rights a pawn are given within a game allow them to enforce their rights within the gameboard making them able to push others off of them if it gets in the way of their role in the game[97].

The injuries pawns receive in a game board[31] or events they experience within a game board[31] have no effect on those in the metaworld[98]. Battler even makes note that the versions of him and Beatrice on the game board aren't actually them but just pawns under the Game Master's control[77].

Pawns cannot do what it deems impossible, and will execute actions best suited to the original personality[77], Dlanor notes that due to this, if Battler and Beatrice of the game board were in the same position as the pawn they would have done the same thing[77]. Battler makes note that the people within the chessboard aren't a meter metaphor, they really are chessboard pieces[61].

Game Masters

Game Masters are the controllers of the game board. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[99].

In these games, they are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[44] with these gameboard stories being compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[44].

The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[61].

Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[66].

Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[67]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[100].

Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[63].

Battler as Game Master learns how difficult in reality game board stories are to construct[21] with Beatrice constantly agonizing over contradictions in her story and a constant battle with logical fallacies[21] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[21].

Noted during Ange and Featherine's discussion that the Game Master is allowed to smoothly alter their plot at will[84].

Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[101], known as "the right to spectate"[101].

Death in the Gameboard

Death in the Game Board occurs in two ways[21] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[21], the other being the death of being outside of the game[21] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore, Beatrice gave up her victory during the previous game causing her to die and disappear[21] thus she will never come back to life[21].

It is later revealed that Beatrice as the game master made all of these stories as an attempt to hide the true story in Rokkenjima of the Ushiromiya's all being killed by Rudolf and Kyrie before Eva killed both of them[102].

Truths

Red Truths

In that case... From now on, when I speak the truth, I will use red.
~ Beatrice introducing the Red Truth

During the gameboard between Battler and Beatrice, she introduced the concept of red truths, where when she speaks the truth, she will use red[27]. Everything said in red is the truth[27], when speaking the truth one is under no obligation to provide further proof that will confirm the truth of what they say[27]. They cannot[27] be used[27] for things where they cannot give an explanation with a red truth[27]. Red truths can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided[27]. It is normally advisable to not use red truths when one already has the advantage[103]. They can be used even to insult one as if it was the truth[104] along with being used to fix quick mistakes[104]. In Episode 3 when explaining red truths again Beatrice notes everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute[12]. Battler finds out the loophole to red truths as they're a double-edge sword that can cut one down if they're not too careful with it, where the red is actually information that exposes the truth and allows one to formulate a counterattack if used incorrectly[86].

The red truth is defined as an absolute truth, a tool available to witches[30]. It is later shown that witches can permit humans to use Red Truths[32].

Red Truths[32] cannot be used[32] to force oneself to speak in red when they cannot which will cause them to suffocate[32].

It is noted by Ronove that there are no red truths in the Human World[64].

The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing[28].

Red Truths can only be said about actual truth[84], if a witch's trick contradicts the red truth then it is a lie which breaks the rules.

Battler later reveals there are two types of red truths, one for red that applies to a specific game board and a red truth that is shared across all game boards and can operate in the world outside of the cat box too[29].

Blue Truths

Beatrice: As of now, Battler, I will allow you to use the blue.

Battler: Blue...? Meaning that I can demand that you repeat my words if I say them in "blue"? Beatrice: Not quite. Your requests could be concerning any minute detail. But the blue truth must deny the witch's position, or it is not valid. Battler: ?

Beatrice: For example: "There are five master keys." This is merely a confirmation of the number of keys and does not deny the witch. In order to use the blue, you must change your phrasing. In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room! ...And by doing so, you have now forced the witch to respond.

Blue Truths are something Beatrice allowed Battler to use in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, however, the catch is that the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid[30].

For example, a blue truth cannot be used to claim "There are five master keys." as that does not deny the witch, instead the phrasing must be "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"[30].

Blue truths alleges that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter[30].

However, witches can use blue truths too as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent where the opponent must disporve the blue with a red truth[32].

Blue Truths not only refute Red Truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter[31].

Golden Truths

The Golden Truth... It is the divine truth, derived through different means than the red truth. Its power is equal to the red truth- sometimes inferior, but other times superior!!
~ Dlanor on the Gold Truth

Golden Truths were first introduced when Battler raised to the level of a game master and used it to prove the corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it[33]. However, golden truths can only be used by the Game Master[33] along with the strength of the truth varying, its power is equal to a red truth; sometimes inferior but other times superior[33].

Purple Truths

Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, the culprit alone is capable of lying in purple statements.

During the final game made by Bernkastel, she introduced a new statement known as "Purple Statements" (otherwise Purple Truths)[34], Battler directly asks what they are with Bernkastel responding that it's a rule devised to make the story easier to understand, purple statements have the same power as red truth, however, only the culprit can lie in purple statements[34].

Souls

One's soul can linger even after they are killed[103].

Kinzou nearly resisted through his soul being erased until a red truth was placed on him[56].

Fate

When something is fated to happen it is hard to change such, if a vase is broken even if a witch uses magic to remember its original state the ultimate fate "the vase was smashed" has not been changed thus it will remember the true state and break[12].

The Endless Witch

The infinite realm that all witches ought to aspire to, the endless witch is free of all worldy suffering, certain to eternal bliss[12]. Life and Death are empty concepts to the Endless Witch[12].

The Endless Witch succession has them pass their most secret arts to a single pupil, once they pass down their arts they retire to further stem their propagation[105].

Normal custom includes that a witch from another sect makes a recommendation before a succession may occur[105].

Lambdadelta recommended EVA and Bernkastel recommended Ange[105].

Initially the name Beatrice was not passed down but it later became customary for the name to be inherited as well with EVA following suit giving ANGE the name of Beatrice[105].

Knox's Decalogue

The ten commandments created by Dlanor A. Knox's father and used in heresy trials.

Knox's 1st: It is forbidden for the culprit to be anyone not mentioned in the early part of the story.

Knox's 2nd: It is forbidden for supernatural agencies to be employed as a detective technique.

Knox's 3rd: It is forbidden for hidden passages to exist.

Knox's 4th: It is forbidden for unknown drugs or hard-to-understand scientific devices to be used.

Knox's 5th: (not included)

Knox's 6th: It is forbidden for accident or intuition to be employed as a detective technique.

Knox's 7th: It is forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.

Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented.

Knox's 9th: It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and interpretations be heard.

Knox's 10th: It is forbidden for a character to disguise themselves as another without any clues.

The debate over the interpretation of these laws continues to this very day, and it has become the source of countless unfair controversies. While fundamentalists call any infringement upon these commandments heresy, revisionists point out that many canonized geniuses have violated these rules.

Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 5 Tips Knox's Decalogue

Knox's Decalogue were first mentioned by Bernkastel as a way to refute arguments used against Lambdadelta in their game.

Duel Pistol Set

A set of demon duel pistols prepared by Zepar and Furfur. The number of shots loaded depends on the format of the duel. In most cases, it holds just a single round.

The emotions of the duelers are loaded into them, and if one of their bullets grazes any part of the body, the concept of the target will be denied without exception.

In the past, duels were performed in the classic style with swords, but this took a great deal of time before an outcome was reached, which displeased certain impatient theatergoing witches.

For this reason, a duel weapon that would always kill with a single shot was asked for and created.

Of course, this weapon is not particularly popular among theatergoing witches who are fans of good-old drawn out, dramatic duels.

Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 6 Duel Pistol Set

A pistol set created by Zepar and Furfur for duels that were made in order to reconcile impatient theatergoing witches.

Even if one grazes the other with a bullet, the concept of the target wil be denied without exception.

City of Books

"The Honored City of Books Curated By Her Majesty The Witch Of Theater, Drama, and observation", a massive "library" that contains all stories, including[108] where the entire stories in Umineko are merely a single book[108].

Virgilia describes it as a place where the witches who traverse the sea of fragments collect those fragments in text form and store them[109].

The City of Books is sacred territory under the administration of the Senate and there are holy barriers erected around it[109].

Only Witches of the Senate are allowed in the City of Books, though non-members can be given a special invitation that temporarily grants them entrance tot he sacred territory, but the invitations specify arriving on the dot, a second late tot he party's starting time and they automatically lose the effect[109].

Creators

Creators are mentioned multiple times throughout the series, however Lambdadelta defines them more properly, noting they are omniscient all-powerful beings beyond even witches[10].

Trivia

  • The name Maria means "sea of bitterness" or "sea of sorrow." Some sources also suggest alternate meanings such as "rebellion," "wished-for child," and "mistress or lady of the sea."
  • According to the Episode 8 Shinsou Kaimei Dokuhon, Ryukishi07 intended for Maria to be a mysterious character akin to Rika Furude, designed to draw readers into the story. However, she ultimately did not receive as much narrative focus as Rika did.

Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc

Misconceptions

Witches lose their powers as soon as one does not believe in them/One can simply debate a witches existence away

Throughout most of Umineko, Battler and Beatrice are debating over her existence, and Beatrice's strength slowly comes back with each game[23] due in part to the hesitation within Battler's heart[23]. Battler even establishes that simply refusing to believe in Beatrice is not enough to beat her and instead will turn him more and more into the defensive until he's simply overpowered and loses[23].

It should be noted too during majority of the first episode, none of the characters left alive believe in Beatrice asides from Maria Ushiromiya, yet she was still able to manifest in the end as she killed everyone[37].

On top of this, simply not believing would not be enough to work; Beatrice makes direct note that Battler has a strong resistance to magic thus her magic cannot reach him[37].

Of extra note, Battler directly has Bernkastel helping him[78], Lambdadelta slightly raising the chances of Battler winning[114], and Beatrice's own teacher explaining to Battler how to counter Beatrice's arguments[39]. Beatrice's teacher mainly being the reason for why Battler was able to argue against Beatrice's points[115]. It was even further noted by Lambdadelta and Bernkastel that Battler couldn't win Beatrice's game even with all of the sloppy loose ends it had and the amount of help he received[116]. Battler himself realizes while Beatrice faces against Bernkastel that she was going easy on him in all their games so that it would be a fair fight between them, constantly giving Battler hints until he got used to the game[67].

Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch[57].

It's further noted too that people who've lost their sight also lose all anti-magic power and magical resistance[117].

Even while Battler was battling against Eva-Beatrice, he couldn't truly deny her witch form for good and required Beatrice to use a red truth to kill off all magic there[94][95].

Kinzou further reaffirms that Battler was born with more of his anti-magical blood than anyone else[118].

It's noted by Maria during her status as the Witch of Origins that all humans are born with toxins that block magic[55].

It's noted by Greed that humans are walking blobs of anti-magic though she can manifest as long as a witch like Ange concentrates[55].

Despite all the anti-magic toxins, due to Ange fully believing in magic and her determination being strong she was able to have her familiars interact with the human world to kill all the guards that were after her[119][120].

Eva even tries to argue that there's no way for Ange to call the seven sisters of purgatory due to her anti-magic toxins, yet she still does[120].

Thus simply denying the existence of a witch is not enough to defeat them, as Battler himself with a narrative strong resistance to magic needs a lot of help to truly even counter Beatrice. On top of this, it's specifically noted in-universe that humans built up a strong anti-magic toxin overtime that became strong enough to deny a witch's existence[70], thus this is not a weakness that applies out of universe unless a series has a similar mechanic.

Magic Isn't Real

This comes from the arguments of debates over whether or not it's truly just characters having mental issues as a way to cope with scenarios.

For example, Maria believes she is the daughter of the Holy Ghost as a way to cope with the fact that her mom abused her whenever she asked about her dad.

However, it is proven that the Meta-World is an actual place[89] that witches reside in and there are many scenes throughout the series that can't truly be explained through characters hallucinations.

Such as Ange having her familiars directly interact with the human world and kill all of its people[119][120].

The truth of "magic isn't real"/"magic is real" debate is also answered multiple times in the Umineko franchise.

Using the final talk between Beatrice and Ange, Beatrice does a magic trick and asks Ange if it is magic of a sleight of hand[121] with Ange noting it's a cheap trick but it is also magic as Beatrice has taught her this magic to spread to others to give them happiness. No matter the magic one cannot use it properly and cannot see it without love[121].

It is also repeated multiple times throughout the series how there is no one true truth, it is everyone's point of view as to what their truth is.

Effectively magic is real but also isn't, it is in the situation of a catbox.

It should also be noted that the manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[110], giving all the answers for the reader to conclude.

Witches can easily die to guns

This statement is noted by Ronove noting that witches are weak to weapons such as guns and require anti-bullet barriers in order to be made[57].

The issue is within the scan itself, within the context of Umineko, bullets specifically contain anti-magical power that cuts right through witches and demons.

  47. "6/ There’s some instances where a certain character seems to be criticizing not only the characters, but the readers themselves.
He answered that in the world of Umineko, there’s the Chessboard, then the Meta Room, then the Witches World and it goes up like that. Different worlds are hierarchically piled up. Sometime the critic may be aimed at the characters in the world below, sometimes at the readers, but he’ll leave it at our imagination to guess when."
  48. [When They Cry] The First and Last Gift "The letter ended there.
After reading that, there was nothing left but to take her up on the challenge. It had been awhile since Lambdadelta had played around with a game board of substance. Since Bernkastel had gone out of her way to pass it along, it was sure to be an entertaining one.
    Lambdadelta touched the Fragment.
The moment she did, an array of constellations was suspended in the air, pivoting around the Fragment and forming a miniature galaxy.
"…Oh, now this is nostalgic. So the stage is set in the Japanese countryside. Reminds me of Hinamizawa. …Though, it looks like this place is more desolate than Hinamizawa ever was. …Right then, time to pick my piece. Which one should I choose?"
Lambdadelta held out a hand, and white, black, blue, and red pieces in various shapes and sizes, reminiscent of chess, appeared in the air.
"Which one would be best? …Hmm…"
To participate in a game within a Fragment, you first must send in a piece. In other words, this was much like the character select screen of a video game.
After folding her arms and giving it some deep thought, she eventually settled on a black piece.
She wasn't sure of the situation, but if the point of the game was to survive, she figured her best option would be a sturdy, clever all-rounder with a strong desire to live.
"…In which case, it's gotta be this piece. Let's go, my other self."
She plucked the piece out of midair, then tossed it into the galaxy.
As soon as she did, an infinite number of dazzling lights scattered about, and within a moment, the world was completely buried in a sea of stars.
Within those bright lights, Lambdadelta's consciousness was sucked away…"

  110. 110.0 110.1 Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: The character of Sayo Yasuda in Umineko is interesting. What were your thoughts in Sayo's creation? Additionally, what were your thoughts on her expansion in the Umineko manga?
Ryukishi07: The secret of the character of Sayo is the core of Umineko's story, so her inner workings and development were designed carefully and with the utmost complexity.
In the original version, in order to leave room for imagination for the reader to solve the mystery, I chose not to draw Sayo's secrets in great detail (of course, it's still possible to grasp, but I didn't show things in a way where everyone would get it.)
With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a "period" to the "sentence" that is the world of Umineko.
Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko's eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.
Thus, all of the episode of Sayo that appeared in the EP8 manga is the official answer to the world of Umineko.
By no means is the manga version an individual interpretation. It is an official answer from me, Ryukishi07."
  111. Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: There are many of your works that have been adapted into anime or manga. How is it decided as to which works receive adaptations?
Ryukishi07: Basically, we receive an offer from the company, and we accept it.
So far, the availability of anime and manga adaptations of our works is made possible by courteous cooperation with such companies, and for this I am sincerely grateful.
So, for those who are rooting for more anime and manga of our work, I would be happy if you could support the Japanese companies responsible. (laughs)"
  112. 112.0 112.1 Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""Will people be able to enjoy 'the fun of speculation' in the anime and manga versions too?"
Ryuukishi: Of course. I have been supervising those very carefully. In Higurashi, there were some problems with presentation, and they were allowed to do as they pleased in certain areas. But this time, I have been checking very carefully to make sure there are 'no misconceptions in the presentation' this time, so I think people will be able to significantly enjoy speculation in those as well.
Keiya: In that case, will people who only watch the anime be able to speculate about the series?
Ryuukishi: There is an overwhelming difference in the amount of information contained in an anime and the original work, so it will probably be best to play the original as far as 'the number of hints' is concerned. But as I just said, mysteries in pictures and mysteries in text focus on foreshadowing in very different ways, so things that you didn't notice in the original might feel very out of place in the anime. Then when you return to the original and read the same scene again, you might suddenly feel that something is very suspicious in certain places...... The opposite holds true as well, since some places might not leave an impact when on screen, but the text would lead one to wonder "why is this part being described so thoroughly?" So it might be useful to see it through different mediums."
  113. Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""If you were to assign a difficulty to the other formats, would you say that they're easier or harder than the original?"
Ryuukishi: I believe that the primary factors that decide the difficulty of a puzzle are the amount of hints and the amount of information. In that sense, you might be able to say that the original will actually be the easiest. As you know, things need to be condensed to fit in manga or anime versions. You can't just copy every line word for word and use the same description, so the amount of information naturally shrinks. Because of this, the original will always be easy as far as the quantity of information is concerned. Although there are also more fake leads in the original (laughs). But I wonder if that makes the difficulty equal between the two. Just like Higurashi, I think you should enter into Umineko from the type of media that you are most comfortable with. Then, when you also look at the different formats and see the information in a new light, you might be able to get close to something."
