Long ago, Lambdadelta was once human. She was trapped inside a logic error and became one of the few witches, alongside Bernkastel, who successfully solved one. It is implied that she played a role in Bern's creation by trapping her in one of her own games. Bern later defeated Lambdadelta, with this game being described as one born from a "firm fate." At some point, Lambdadelta encountered the human form of Beatrice and took a strong interest in her game board, which was built around Rokkenjima. In exchange for borrowing it to trap Bern, she granted Beatrice witch powers. The extra arc Memoirs of the ΛΔ expands on this, revealing that Lambdadelta once granted a girl's wish for unshakable determination, which led to her becoming a god at some point in the past. The result of that wish was meant to create a new witch for Lambdadelta to play with. Legend of the Golden Witch Turn of the Golden Witch Banquet of the Golden Witch In the Tea Party, Lambdadelta expresses frustration when Bernkastel's new piece, Ange, abruptly enters the game board without warning. She later speaks privately with Beatrice, showing disappointment that she is not making a serious effort to win. Lambdadelta reminds Beatrice that she became a witch in exchange for allowing Lambda to use her perfect game board. If Beatrice fails to achieve victory, Lambda will not hesitate to strip her of her powers and cast her into the worst possible Fragment. Alliance of the Golden Witch Beatrice ultimately decides to abandon the game, believing Battler is unworthy of facing her. With neither side able to make a move, the game ends without a winner or loser. Lambdadelta tries to convince Battler to prove his worth, but he cannot and soon fades away. Beatrice leaves the game board, and Bernkastel departs with Lambdadelta in pursuit. Beatrice is later forced to return to the game board through Ange's intervention. Lambdadelta shackles her to a chair, intending to keep her there and watch over her for eternity until she wins. Battler also returns, thanks to Bernkastel, and regains his spirit and qualifications, but Ange sacrifices herself in the process and is torn apart. Lambdadelta comments on the tragic scene as it unfolds. In the ???, following Battler and Beatrice's major debate, Lambdadelta and Bernkastel lie together in bed and discuss the game. Lambdadelta reveals that she set the rule preventing Ange from revealing her name, believing that otherwise she and Battler would easily defeat Beatrice. They also mock Battler's theories, with Lambdadelta correcting some of them using the red truth. Bern and Lambda speak of Beatrice as their plaything and declare, under their titles, that she will lose for all eternity—and that no miracle will occur. End of the Golden Witch When Battler rejoins the game, Lambdadelta replays everything from the beginning to show him what has occurred. She presses him for theories on certain scenes, such as Kinzo's appearances and conversations with others despite being dead. As the game continues, Lambdadelta provides red truths in response to Bern's blue statements. When Bern explains how she solved the epitaph, Lambdadelta transports her and Battler to the Sea of Fragments and gives Battler training on how to avoid losing himself there. When Bern's substitute Battler solves the epitaph on the game board and discovers the gold room, Lambdadelta confirms in red that it is real. During the game, she also takes on the role of The Man From 19 Years Ago when calling Natsuhi on the phone. Lambdadelta oversees a court session at midnight in the Court of Illusions to determine whether Natsuhi is the culprit, with Erika and Bern serving as prosecutors and Battler as defense. A new rule is introduced requiring humans who speak in red to provide appropriate proof. The trial proceeds, and Natsuhi is eventually presumed guilty. Lambdadelta declares victory for Bern and Erika when Piece-Beatrice requests to be convicted in Natsuhi's place. She punishes Beatrice by subjecting her to the same fate as the other losers in her past games, summoning a horde of goats to tear her apart, recalling the contract that required Beatrice to pay with her life if she failed to entertain. Before the goats can kill Piece-Beatrice, Dlanor intervenes and announces that Battler still wishes to debate. Battler delivers a red truth stating that Natsuhi is not the culprit, but Lambdadelta invokes the previous rule and demands proof. Battler is silenced, and Lambdadelta entertains Erika and Bern's theory that Natsuhi had an affair with Kinzo. In the ???, Battler revives. Lambdadelta rescinds the earlier judgment and recognizes Battler as the new Golden Witch and Endless Sorcerer, reopening the court so he can present new evidence. Battler and Erika exchange arguments, and when Battler successfully uses the Gold Truth, Lambdadelta realizes he has truly understood Beatrice's game. She declares the match a draw and passes her role as Game Master to Battler. Dawn of the Golden Witch As Battler and Erika debate the disappearance of Battler's corpse from his sealed room, Lambda reviews both sides' strategies and remarks that Battler's approach appears flawed. She warns him not to cause a Logic Error, as it would destroy the game board. Battler claims he escaped the room despite the chain and tape seal, and Lambda acknowledges it as a valid move. The trick involves Battler switching places with Kyrie, who was also a first twilight "victim." However, Dlanor announces in red that Kyrie cannot save Battler. Lambda is shocked that Dlanor can repeat this without Battler confirming it himself and suggests Natsuhi could take her place instead, but this is also denied in red. Lambda desperately offers that another first twilight victim could have switched with Battler, but Erika reveals they are all dead—she killed and decapitated them. With a Logic Error imminent, Lambda advises Battler to either admit his mistake or reconstruct the closed room trick with new logic. Battler insists he can still resolve the error and is sent to a guest room resembling the one his corpse was in. Until he solves it, his mind will remain trapped there. Lambda offers him advice as a "survivor of hell," telling him that as long as he holds onto his hatred for Erika and Bern, he can keep going. Battler is taken aback by her demeanor, and Lambda begins to show signs of unraveling as she recalls her own experience with a logic error. She wishes the Game Master luck and departs. Chick Beatrice remains determined to save Battler, and Lambda offers her guidance as well. She explains that the old Beatrice loved detective novels and closed room tricks, and built her magical system around them. Lambda assures her that the old Beatrice could have solved this trick, then disappears, saying she expects to meet her again soon. Erika asks Lambdadelta about her experience with a logic error, to which Lambda replies that Bern went through an even worse one while still a piece. She references the Infinite Monkey Theorem to emphasize just how long Bern struggled to escape, explaining why she became the way she is. Erika observes that her own hell stemmed from her ability to understand the truth, and that Lambda and Bern could not become Witches of Truth because they lacked that ability. Lambdadelta takes offense but lets it slide as a reward for Erika's victory. Erika plans to marry the comatose Battler and holds a wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Bern and Lambda watch from a balcony, discussing Battler's closed room. Lambda bets that Beatrice will revive and save Battler. Chiester 00 later arrives and secretly informs Lambda that Beatrice plans to storm the wedding. Lambda orders the security to prepare for battle, eager to add excitement to the proceedings. As predicted, Beatrice revives and interrupts the wedding, challenging the Witch of Truth to a duel. Erika accepts, and Lambdadelta once again oversees the game to ensure both sides' theories are legitimate. Requiem of the Golden Witch In the ???, Bernkastel is appointed Game Master for Beatrice's final game. Lambdadelta is present when Bern declares in red that she will not allow this game to have a happy ending. Twilight of the Golden Witch After Ange is freed, she and EVA-Beatrice attack Rokkenjima and summon goats to devour the island. Lambdadelta has no intention of helping and simply watches the chaos unfold. Lion speaks with her about how Bern has convinced Ange to seek the truth of Rokkenjima even at the cost of her life, but Lambda remains uninterested. She believes the outcome of Ange's game is obvious, but Lion urges her to keep watching, insisting that the end will not be as expected. Seeing Lion's unwavering faith in Ange, Lambda decides to stay a little longer. It's revealed in Confession of a Golden Witch that Lambda appeared before Yausda and granted her wish of becoming a witch. Battler's party retreats to the Golden Land, where Erika issues an ultimatum demanding their surrender. As the group pretends to argue among themselves, Lambda disguises herself as a konpeitou and secretly speaks to Battler and Beatrice, informing them that Bern's group is in the City of Books. Featherine is hosting an unveiling of Eva's diary there, but it is protected by a barrier that only witches of the Senate or those with invitations can pass. The invitations, however, were deactivated the moment the party began. The group asks Lambda to help since she is a witch of the Senate and has access, but she refuses, as interfering with Featherine's party would make her an enemy of the entire witch world. The group persuades her that it would be thrilling and help stave off boredom. Lambdadelta grows frustrated, pointing out that she is only there to watch an interesting show, not to die alongside everyone else. She complains about her own lameness and how she exists in a different world, sinking into a chair in despair. Battler apologizes and expresses his determination to save Ange. Ange reunites with the group and wants to return to the City of Books to retrieve the diary, realizing she still has her invitation. She asks Lambda to take her there, and Battler insists on going instead, as he exists outside the cat box while Ange needs to live into the future. The siblings argue, and Lambda discovers Ange actually has two invitations, allowing them both to go. She agrees to take them to the City of Books but decides to step back afterward. Once they arrive, Lambda reminds Battler and Ange that they were protected by the game board's rules, but now that they have left, they could easily be destroyed by Bern. Lambda decides to continue helping because she wants to see a perfect happy ending. They sneak past guard cats and locate where the key to the diary is held. Seeing that more cats guard it and that unsealing it will take time, Lambda suggests they send someone as a sacrifice to distract Bern and the others. They play rock-paper-scissors to decide who will be the sacrifice, and Lambda intentionally loses. Battler and Ange worry they will not be able to return to the Golden Land if Lambda dies, but she hands them a Fragment that will send them back. Lambda does not mind fighting Bern, as she has a score to settle. She turns the siblings into konpeitou, flicks them toward the key, and goes to find Bern. Bern and Lambda exchange banter and fight. Battler watches, unable to comprehend the scale of their battle, describing them as creating and destroying universes. Featherine arrives and asks Bern how the ceremony preparations are going. Bern mocks Lambda, saying that any attack she makes will require Featherine to respond in kind due to their contract. Bern asks where Battler is, but Lambda ignores her and makes a small attack toward her. Featherine looks confused and apologizes on Bern's behalf, warning Lambda not to interfere further. Lambda declares that everyone in the Golden Land is her miko and focuses on Featherine's memory device, intending to attack it and cause her to glitch. Lambda attacks Featherine, but Featherine stops the story, too drunk to write a proper fight scene. She skips to the end, having Lambda slammed into a bookcase and falling to pieces. As Lambda wonders what killed her, she insults Featherine before falling into the City of Books' void. During Bern and Battler's later battle, Bern asks for help, but Featherine says she is busy writing Lambda's final moments. At the end, Featherine reveals that Lambdadelta is still alive and has been moved to the audience seating. In the Tea Party, Bern stitches her back together as Lambda complains. Erika plays with Lambda's limbs before giving a status report on Dlanor and other characters. Lambdadelta is fully restored and parts ways with Bern, resolving to meet again when something else cries. |
Appearance
General Description: Lambdadelta is a girl in her teens with short, blonde hair. Her eyes are amber in the original visual novel and Pachi-Slot adaptations, and red in the anime, console, and Higurashi Mei adaptations.
Clothing/Outfit: A pink hat and dress. White-and-pink-striped stockings and shoes. Her dress is adorned with pumpkins and pinkish-red bows, some of which are candy-shaped. Black long gloves.
Special Features: In the console and Higurashi Mei adaptations, she has rather pointy canine teeth, often seen accentuating her confident smirks and exuberant laughter.
Personality
- Emotive and Fun-Seeking: Lambda is highly emotive and always wants to have fun, even if the means seem contradictory to her role.
- Playfully Cruel but Occasionally Compassionate: Lambda is playfully cruel and does not care what suffering others go through so long as it entertains her, though she occasionally shows compassion. She took Beatrice's side but tried to make Battler stand up and fight when he lost faith in himself.
- Arrogant: Lambda is arrogant, having declared herself the strongest witch in the universe and claimed historical buildings were erected in her honor after granting wishes.
- Not Very Diligent: Lambda is not very diligent. Her records for the Court of Illusions were only several lines long compared to Bernkastel's thousands of pages.
- Thick-Headed: Lambda has shades of idiocy, referring to herself as "super paper" in reference to the rock-paper-scissors rivalry with Bernkastel and Beatrice. Her stupidity though is moreso an act, as she rarely takes on a serious tone.
Goals
- Play with Bernkastel forever (Ongoing).
- Stave her boredom (Ongoing).
Relationships
Bernkastel
Bern holds affection for Lambda, and Lambda reciprocates with great interest in her. Lambda desires a mutual understanding with Bern, as both have endured logic errors in the past. According to Whose Tea Party, Bern used to be quite different and began to open up when Lambda started spending time with her.
The two witches frequently engage in banter filled with cruel yet lewd remarks. Bern sometimes loses control of her emotions, and Lambda is often the one to help steady her.
Bernkastel has admitted on several occassions that she truly loves Lambdadelta. With Lambdadelta always talks about how much she loves Bernkastel, even almost thinking of losing on purpose against Bernkastel until realizing that if she did she would never heard Bernkastel's whispers of love again.
Beatrice
Lambdadelta serves as Beatrice's Witch Guardian, with Beatrice acting as her miko. During a conversation about witch powers in the ??? of Legend of the Golden Witch, Bernkastel notes that Lambda might have good compatibility against Beatrice, as she would be capable of killing Beatrice's "endless" nature. It is later revealed that Lambda bestowed Beatrice with her witch powers when Beatrice was still a lowly human and now acts as her guardian.
However, Lambda does not truly regard Beato as a friend and will not hesitate to discard her if she proves disappointing. This is exemplified in End of the Golden Witch, where—after Beato surrenders and falls into a coma—Lambda continuously mocks her, asking if she has any problems and acting ecstatic when she remains silent.
Battler Ushiromiya
Lambda stands as an opponent to Battler by virtue of siding with Beatrice. She prioritizes her own enjoyment above all else, and despite frequently antagonizing Battler, she delivers rousing speeches to him when he loses faith in himself and keeps Beato's game going—as seen in Banquet of the Golden Witch and Alliance.
In End, Lambda becomes Battler's witch guardian after he uncovers the truth of Beato's game and names him the new Golden Witch. From that point onward, Lambda does considerably more to help Battler prove his understanding of Beatrice and mediates some of his games. She maintains a passive stance during Battler's other conflicts in later arcs, but ultimately comes around and offers assistance after witnessing his determination.
Ange Ushiromiya
Lambda is also an opponent to Ange, much like she is to Battler. However, Lambda sees value in Ange as a tool to help her remain with Bernkastel forever. She attempts to convince Ange to become her piece rather than Bern's and to prolong the game for as long as possible, but her efforts fail. After this, Lambda considers Ange a failure and shows little interest in her later development—as seen in Requiem of the Golden Witch, when she tells a distressed Ange to be quiet as the true events of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders unfold. However, in Twilight of the Golden Witch, Lambda comes to sympathize with Ange and names her—along with the other Golden Land residents—as her mikos, fighting on their behalf.

Grade: S (Lambdadelta was the most powerful witch in the universe before she lost that status to Bernkastel[2])
Tier: 10-B. At least 2-C in the Meta World
Cardinality: Finite
Dimensionality: 3-D in her humanoid form, Devoid in truth
Attack Potency: Average Human level (Used to be a human that lived in the human domain). Can ignore conventional durability in the Meta-World (The Meta World is largely a conceptual plane where attacks are done[16] through the usage of truths[17]. Where witch hunters normally need to consider conceptual areas that withces escape too[18], with conceptual denials used as a primary weapon[19])
Durability: Average Human level. At least Universe level in the Meta World. Existence in the Meta-World makes them very difficult to kill (Death in the Meta World is ultimately meaningless[20] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[20], the other being the death of being outside of the game[20] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore[20] effectively being a death as they refuse to come back[20], otherwise standard "death" does not exist. Even if a witch is killed in the human domain they still exist within the Meta World)
Striking Strength: Average Human Class. At least Universe Class (Buster) in the Meta World

Knowledge: Grandmaster level
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics
- Fighter's Intuition (Fighters can throw out short ranged quick attacks[26] average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks[26], or jigh-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[26]. - Avatar Creation (Witches can make themselves pieces in the game world as they view themself from the higher-plane[11]. The pieces can also still operate even if their higher plane self is effectively loses all will[11]. It's noted that choosing a piece is the equivalent of a character select screen of a video game and one's consciousness from the higher plane can be sucked away when throwing their piece in[52])
- Incorporeality (Witches initially manifest as shadowy figures that cannot be seen or felt asides from the occasional odd sixth sense[39])
- Invisibility (It's noted that witches like Beatrice have mysterious happenings happen around the mansion with no one ever seeing anyone[43], down to claims of seeing floating lights and shining butterflies along with eerie footsteps echoing through the halls[43]. - Probability Manipulation (Lambdadelta as the witch of certainty can raise one's chances of winning[2], her ability works as long as one denies the possibility that they could lose[74]. Lambdadelta can make sure that there will be absolutely no miracles[4]. Noted by Beatrice that the power of the witch of certainty is only absolute will to surpass certain danger will lead to certain success[75]. Lambdadelta used her powers as the witch of certainty to gurantee that the old Beatrice would have found a way to dream up the locked-room trick[76]. Lambdadelta can counter Bernkastel making it where no miracles will occur by interfering[77])
- Intimidation (Sends fear even into the likes of witches like Beatrice[74])
- Transformation
- Shapeshifting: Can turn herself into a flying piece of konpeito sugar candy[78].
- Sheer Will (Lambdadelta and Bernkastel are the only two witches known to have successfuly resumed a game from a logic error where the witch is trapped in a sealed off room forced to find a way to get out of their logical paradox for eternity[76]. It was described by Lambdadelta that her and Bernkastel's hells is what had them raise to become the Witch of Miracles and Witch of Certainty respectively[79]. It was noted Lambdadelta's hell could only be escaped through absolute certain will[79])
- Breaking the Fourth Wall (Lambdadelta, Beatrice, and Bernkastel are all aware of the 4th wall, calling out the readers and the episodes[74])
- Voice Mimicry (Can freely change her voice to any kind of voice on the fly[65])
- Bestowal (Bestowed Battler and Ange with magic crystals that will allow them to cross the sea of fragments[80])
- Nullification
- Projectile Nullification/Barrier Nullification: She can nullify projectiles including barriers[81].
- Power Nullification: Lambdadetla placed restrictions on Dlanor's usage and power of the Red Key[18].
- Truth Nullification: It was revealed by Dlanor that Lamb is likely responsible for why they were not able to use their red truth[5].
- Restoration (Her Meta-World empties the Break Limit Gauge effectively making one have to re-break her defenses[81])
- Absorption & Consumption
- Metaphysical Absorption/Consumpion: (Once on a level of a voyager or higher witches can effectively eat one[14] having that one become one with them[82] merges their individuality into one[82].
- Dimensional Travel (Voyager Witches are capable of freely traveling through worlds of different fates and circumstances[22])
- Transmutation (Can transform an enemy into candy and eat them[81])
- Creation (Can create candy to use as a projectile to throw at enemies[81])
- Battlefield Removal
- Gravity Manipulation (Lambdadelta can make a mass of[7] "ultra-gravity"[7] making one unable to maintain their witch form[7])
- Explosion Manipulation (Can cause her candy to self-destruct[14], which results in the birth of a small universe directly hitting from the inside of one's stomach[82] as the opponent's existence flickers in and out[82]. Throws candy that explodes upon contact[81])
- Universal Creation
- Erasure
- Metaphysical Erasure
Lambdadelta is the Game Master in the 5th game[83], giving her:
- Reality Warping (Game Masters are the controllers of the game board)
- Bestowal (Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[84], known as "the right to spectate"[84])
- Plot Manipulation
- Author Authority: Game Masters are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[25] gameboard stories are compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[25]. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[85]. Game Masters can smoothly alter their plot at will[86].
- Illusion Manipulation (The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[68])
- Law Manipulation (Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[72])
- Truth Manipulation (Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[73]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[87])
- Mortality Manipulation (Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[69])
Beatrice
- Description: Beatrice is effectively Lambdadelta's Miko.
- Usage: Used as a Miko and a means to trap Bernkastel.
- Function: She gave her the powers of a witch so she could have another witch to play with. She also uses Beatrice as a means to trap Bernkastel in her game forever so that she can be with Bernkastel forever.
Notable Techniques
Witch of Certainty
As the Witch of Certainty, Lambdadelta can grant wishes and make them succeed as a certain fate. However, she typically grants this boon to people who already have the determination needed to make their wishes come true.
Candy
For direct combat purposes, Lambdadelta can create candy bombs. She can turn objects and other people, including herself, into konpeitou candies. She has shown to detonate these candy bombs inside of one's stomach, making their very existence flicker from such.
Standard Attacks (A Button)
Short-ranged, low damage dealing attacks, the typical fighter's attack, however these attacks come out fast[26].
Standard Attacks (B Button)
Average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks, these move also at decent speed[26].
Standard Attack (C Button)
High-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[26].
Partner Switch
The fighters can switch in with their partner fighter during battle[26].
Throw
A typical throw attack, can be countered if the opponent uses inputs throw at the same time[26].
Specials
When the special gauge is up, a character can utilize their special attacks[26].
EX Specials
Stronger specials that take away one of the fighters stocks[26].
Super
The fighter's super attack that causes two stocks to use[26].
Break Limit
A break limit is a gauge dictating how long fighters can block and guard from attacks before it breaks[26].
Touch
Guard Touch is a method to counter against guard breaks to temporarily stun the enemy[26].
Knockback Guard Touch causes the enemy to knockback from the counter[26].
Damage Touch is a combo breaker that causes the opponent to fly far away[26]. Though damage touch greatly increases the charge recovery time[26].
Assault Touch is an invicible dash attack that has the fighter crash into the opponent[26]. Though it greatly increases the charge recovery time[26]. Assault Touch can go through special attacks[26].
Stunning
Fighters can combo a fighter enough to where they enter a state where they're dizzy[26]. In this state, they cannot do bursts.
Metaworld Gauge
A red gauge appears beneath the timer. Once fully charged, a fighter can activate Meta-World at the cost of one stock, which alters the stage's appearance[28]. While Meta-World is active, the passive abilities of the activating fighter takes effect. The fighter also gains access to their meta attacks for the duration[28], as long as they continue performing the correct button inputs. The opponent can cancel Meta-World by activating it themselves as soon as it is declared[28]. In response, the first fighter may reactivate it again, provided they still have enough stocks[28].
Red Truths
The Red Truth is an absolute truth spoken in red text, introduced by Beatrice during her game with Battler. Everything said in red is the truth, and the speaker is under no obligation to provide further proof confirming what they say. Red truths cannot be used for things where the speaker cannot give an explanation, though they can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided.
It is normally advisable not to use red truths when one already has the advantage. They can be used to insult someone as if it were the truth, and can fix quick mistakes. In Episode 3, Beatrice notes that everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute.
Battler discovers that red truths are a double-edged sword that can cut one down if used carelessly. The red is information that exposes the truth and allows a counterattack if used incorrectly.
The Red Truth is defined as an absolute truth and a tool available to witches. Witches can permit humans to use Red Truths. Red truths cannot be used to force oneself to speak in red when unable, which will cause suffocation. There are no red truths in the Human World.
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing.
Red truths can only be said about actual truth. If a witch's trick contradicts the red truth, it is a lie which breaks the rules.
There are two types of red truths: one that applies to a specific game board and one that is shared across all game boards and can operate outside the cat box.
Blue Truths
Blue Truths were introduced when Beatrice allowed Battler to use them in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, but the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid. For example, "There are five master keys" is not a valid blue truth as it does not deny the witch. Instead, it must be phrased as "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"
Blue truths allege that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter. Witches can use blue truths too, as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent, forcing the opponent to disprove the blue with a red truth.
Blue truths not only refute red truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter.
Golden Truths
Golden Truths were introduced when Battler rose to the level of a Game Master and used one to prove a corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it. Golden truths can only be used by the Game Master. The strength of the truth varies; its power is equal to a red truth, sometimes inferior but other times superior.
Purple Truths
Purple Truths were introduced by Bernkastel during the final game. Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, only the culprit is capable of lying in purple statements.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Unique Tactics: Lambdadelta and Bernkastel will endlessly play with something that interest them[5] but if something doesn't interest them[5] or no longer interests them[5] they will discard of it immedieatly[5].
- Chess Board Debates: Characters in Umineko on the chess board largely fight in debates, normally over one's existence (notably witches or supernatural creatures), as a typical fight will not do much to either side if it's two witches or it would be unfair for a human. Game Masters normally need to construct a story in order to do a debate[20] making sure there's no paradoxes or fatal logical fallacies[20] as these all largely matter to make the debate even otherwise the witch would just win.
- Out of Chess Board: When not cosigning to debates, characters instead decide to fight physically being able to utilize different punch and kick combos along with weapons or supernatural powers.
Weaknesses
- Witch Weaknesses: One can make special chants or charms to protect themself and others from witches[43]. These charms protected Natsuhi from the witches attacking her[46]. Maria initially thought Battler was safe from Beatrice due to the charm she gave him[53] with Battler admitting later he actually did have it[88]. It's further explained that these charms are the fifth pentacle of mars, acting as a powerful ward against evil making it difficult for magical beings to get past[89]. A witch cannot fully complete their miracle if one person born with a high resistance to magic doesn't believe in magic fully[40], making their magic slowly stop working overtime[40]. Witches cannot appear before everyone as long as someone with a high resistance to magic denies their existence[90]. If too many gazes turn a witches way with their anti-magic toxins they will cause the witches body to vanish[5]. Spiders and their cobwebs are able to ward off evil[90]. Witches are in constant need of entertainment or else they will literally die of boredom[1]. Beatrice notes most witches grow tired of life after a millennium[70]. Boredom is considered a direct toxin to witches[6]. Eternal boredom is the worst poison of all: that which kills all witches[61]. Holy based magic even if it's not targeted towards a witch can seal and weaken their powers[91]. Items such as the Spirit Mirror showcase their ability to suppress the evil spirits of Akujikishima and by proxy can effect witches and holds evil spirits at bay[92]. Witches cannot completely debunk the argument of the human realm as scientific and magical theories co-exist making it where to fully prove their existence they would need to show it[44], allowing things like Battler to ever deny a magical battle happening because there are no leftover traces or proof of it[44]. Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch's magic[64]. Witches when using summoning or resurrection spells require a vessel, without it, a difficult spell becomes virtually impossible[93]. A denial of a witch's existence is translated as pain for them[73]. Most witch items lose their power if they are not given directly by the witch[94]. Magic is limited by what the user believes they can achieve, it being the reason the seven sisters of purgatory couldn't kill Ange's classmates at St. Lucia's[95]. Witch's cannot commit logic errors within the rules of the game as it would go against red truths causing them to not make magic that's still feasibly a trick under human methods[86]. If they are caught within a logic error their soul is trapped in the sealed room for eternity with them trying to figure out how to get out of it through the logic error[76]. Unless a witch becomes a Voyager Witch, most witches cannot leave their territory at will[13].
- Truth Weaknesses
- Red Truth: Red Truths[29] cannot be used[29] for cases where the explanation cannot be given an explanation with a red truth[29]. They are a double-edge sword that can be used against the user if they use it incorrectly[96]. One cannot use[34] red truths[34] to speak in red for something they do not believe[34]. Red Truths do not exist in the human world as[70] they possess powerful anti-magic toxins. Witches cannot use red truths to lie and can only be said about the actual truth[86].
- Blue Truth: Blue Truths can only be used to deny the opponent's position[32], it cannot be used to make an assertion unless it specifically is worded in a way that denies the opponent's position[32].
- Golden Truth: Golden Truths can only be used by the Game Master[35].
- Purple Statement: Purple Truths hold the same power as red truths, however the culprit can lie in purple statements, making it harder to be able to tell when it is the truth or not[36].
- Game Master Weaknesses: Game Masters in reality have a difficult process[20] when constructing their stories as they need to watch out for paradoxes and logical fallacies[20] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[20].
- Magic Weaknesses: Magic requires risk, every kind of magic carries its own risk and weaknesses[54].
- Unique Weaknesses: Lambdadelta and Bernkastel are trying to find anything to keept them interested thus if something interests them they will keep going with it even if it ends up being detrimental to them[5].
Note
- It's explained by Lambdadelta that it is easier for Bernkastel to read straight-forward and honest people like her while Beatrice has a bad habit of goofing off and prolonging a game when victory is in sight[2]. Making the three effectively work like Rock-Paper-Scissors, Lamb is Paper, Beato is Rock, and Bern is scissors[2].
Explanations
Rokkenjima
Rokkenjima is an island in the Izu Archipelago South of Tokyo[97], being a small island no more than six miles across and owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family[97]. The island is plentiful with wildlife (specifically large flocks of seagulls) being left largely untouched by the Ushiromiya family and they only disappear to incite disaster occurring[39]. The island was bought by the head of the Ushiromiya Family after the great Kanto earthquake nearly brought the clan to ruin in 1923[39].
During the events of Episode 3 and onward, Rokkenjima entered a state of being a layered world, where both scientific and magical theories coexist thus neither side can cancel out the others arguments[44].
Ushiromiya Family
A wealthy family that annually goes to Rokkenjima island for family gatherings[97]. There was a time when the great Kanto earthquake brought the Ushiromiya clan to ruin in 1923 but the head of the Ushiromiya family used his considerable talent and astonishingly good luck to revive the family's fortunes, being the one to have bought Rokkenjima where he makes his home[39]. This is done due to his legendary ten tons of gold that he used as the foundation of his fortune[43], which other members of the Ushiromiya family are trying to get through inheritance of finding the location of the gold[98]. According to Kinzou Ushiromiya he got ten tons of gold by making a contract with the witch Beatrice[43].
Those that marry into the Ushiromiya family are not treated the same as those born by blood into it[98], they are never allowed to wear the family's crest even after marrying into it and are treated like a complete outsider due to not sharing the blood[98] being considered by some of the family members "glorified maid-servant"[98] and insulted at the idea of receiving any orders from those that do not share the blood[98].
The family is sat in according to the line of succession which is as follows:[98] Head of the Family, Kinzou Ushiromiya[98] -> Future Head of House, Krauss Ushiromiya (Jessica's Father)[98] -> Second in Line, Eva Ushiromiya (George's Mother)[98] -> Third in Line, Rudolf Ushiromiya (Battler's Father)[98] -> Fourth in Line, Rosa Ushiromiya (Maria's Mother)[98] -> Fifth in Line, Jessica Ushiromiya[98] -> Sixth in Line, George Ushiromiya[98] -> Seventh in Line, Battler Ushiromiya[63] -> Eight in Line, Maria Ushiromiya[98] -> Ninth in Line, Natsuhi Ushiromiya (Jessica's Mother)[98] -> Tenth in Line, Hideoyoshi Ushiromiya (George's Father)[98] -> Eleventh in Line, Kyrie Ushiromiya (Rudolph's Second Wife)[98]
Spirit Attunement
It's explained by the family servant Chiyo Kumasawa that every human being has the ability to sense the presence of ghost, but this affinity gradually fades with age, characters like Maria Ushiromiya being the youngest of the family is able to sense oncoming calamities and disasters[97].
Witch of Rokkenjima
The Witch of Rokkenjima is a legend[39] that was told to the children of the Ushiromiyas about how Beatrice comes on dark, stormy nights wandering out of the forest in search of human sacrifices[98]. With this legend also comes a mystery with Beatrice's epitaph that reads as follows:
If you seek the Golden Land, follow the river and seek the key downstream, you will find a village. In this village, seek the shore of which two will speak. There the key to the Golden Land sleeps.Whoever finds the eky should follow these directions to the Golden Land.
On the first night, offer up as sacrifices the six the key chooses.
On the second night, those who remain will tear apart the two who are close.
On the third night, those who remain will praise my noble name.
On the fourth night, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth night, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth night, gouge the belly and kill.
On the seventh night, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth night, gouge the foot and kill.
On the night night, the witch will revive, and none shall be left alive.
On the tenth night, the journey will end, and you shall reach the capital in which the gold dwells.
The witch will praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold in the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be the ressurection of love lost. One shall be the witch, put into an eternal sleep.
Rest in peace, My beloved witch, Beatrice.

—The Witch's Epitaph Original Japanese Text
Despite it being a legend, Beatrice the witch is real and exists[46].
It is also revealed by Genji that Beatrice was the second lover of Kinzou who perished before the mansion was built and he spent years focusing on his dark arts in order to revive her[99].
Debates
There is a plane that watches the regular plane where one can deal with debating, effectively the same as a chess game[100], effectively being the same as viewing them from a different plane[100] where witches can simply restart over and over the game, the number of times they can play being entirely up to them[100].
Gameboards can have witches effectively get everything they want, making it harder to prove them wrong during a debate[101]. One can tweak facts previously established on the game board to effectively create new rules and truths[29].
Gameboards can have turns stalled if one of the members refuse to continue[44], one can even fall into the reality of the game board[44].
Death is also handled differently in the gameboard where the lost of a piece means they simply bide their time on the side of the chessboard[44]. One's voice cannot reach into the Game Board[102].
Along with this it has no effect on anything in the main world[103].
It is established further in Battler's game board against Eva Beatrice that witches are allowed to[104][105] resurrect the dead for testimony[104] the human side cannot use this move even if there's witches on their side[104]. Along with this, witches can[105] bind one in solid undeniable red truths that they cannot break out of unless they can deny the truth[105]. Though red can also be used to fully deny a witch[105] exposing the answers and destroying all the magic[105].
Witches can also add new pieces into the Gameboard that function as detectives[106].
Each gameboard is its own world with each one's conclusion having an effect on reality[106]. For example, Eva Ushiromiya being the only survivor in one of the gameboards allowed her to live in the real world and escape the island, even when Ange found other bottles that listed the other game worlds endings.
Each gameboard exists as one small game in the endless sea of Fragments[6].
Pawns
Pawns are pieces on the game board set by the people in the Metaworld.
Some pieces have awareness that they're pieces on the game board[70].
The rights a pawn are given within a game allow them to enforce their rights within the gameboard making them able to push others off of them if it gets in the way of their role in the game[107].
The injuries pawns receive in a game board[33] or events they experience within a game board[33] have no effect on those in the metaworld[108]. Battler even makes note that the versions of him and Beatrice on the game board aren't actually them but just pawns under the Game Master's control[5].
Pawns cannot do what it deems impossible, and will execute actions best suited to the original personality[5], Dlanor notes that due to this, if Battler and Beatrice of the game board were in the same position as the pawn they would have done the same thing[5]. Battler makes note that the people within the chessboard aren't a meter metaphor, they really are chessboard pieces[68].
Game Masters
Game Masters are the controllers of the game board. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[85].
In these games, they are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[25] with these gameboard stories being compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[25].
The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[68].
Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[72].
Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[73]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[87].
Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[69].
Battler as Game Master learns how difficult in reality game board stories are to construct[20] with Beatrice constantly agonizing over contradictions in her story and a constant battle with logical fallacies[20] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[20].
Noted during Ange and Featherine's discussion that the Game Master is allowed to smoothly alter their plot at will[86].
Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[84], known as "the right to spectate"[84].
Death in the Gameboard
Death in the Game Board occurs in two ways[20] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[20], the other being the death of being outside of the game[20] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore, Beatrice gave up her victory during the previous game causing her to die and disappear[20] thus she will never come back to life[20].
It is later revealed that Beatrice as the game master made all of these stories as an attempt to hide the true story in Rokkenjima of the Ushiromiya's all being killed by Rudolf and Kyrie before Eva killed both of them[109].
Truths
Red Truths
| “ | In that case... From now on, when I speak the truth, I will use red. | „ |
| ~ Beatrice introducing the Red Truth |
During the gameboard between Battler and Beatrice, she introduced the concept of red truths, where when she speaks the truth, she will use red[29]. Everything said in red is the truth[29], when speaking the truth one is under no obligation to provide further proof that will confirm the truth of what they say[29]. They cannot[29] be used[29] for things where they cannot give an explanation with a red truth[29]. Red truths can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided[29]. It is normally advisable to not use red truths when one already has the advantage[110]. They can be used even to insult one as if it was the truth[111] along with being used to fix quick mistakes[111]. In Episode 3 when explaining red truths again Beatrice notes everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute[61]. Battler finds out the loophole to red truths as they're a double-edge sword that can cut one down if they're not too careful with it, where the red is actually information that exposes the truth and allows one to formulate a counterattack if used incorrectly[96].
The red truth is defined as an absolute truth, a tool available to witches[32]. It is later shown that witches can permit humans to use Red Truths[34].
Red Truths[34] cannot be used[34] to force oneself to speak in red when they cannot which will cause them to suffocate[34].
It is noted by Ronove that there are no red truths in the Human World[70].
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing[30].
Red Truths can only be said about actual truth[86], if a witch's trick contradicts the red truth then it is a lie which breaks the rules.
Battler later reveals there are two types of red truths, one for red that applies to a specific game board and a red truth that is shared across all game boards and can operate in the world outside of the cat box too[31].
Blue Truths
Beatrice: As of now, Battler, I will allow you to use the blue.Battler: Blue...? Meaning that I can demand that you repeat my words if I say them in "blue"? Beatrice: Not quite. Your requests could be concerning any minute detail. But the blue truth must deny the witch's position, or it is not valid. Battler: ?
Beatrice: For example: "There are five master keys." This is merely a confirmation of the number of keys and does not deny the witch. In order to use the blue, you must change your phrasing. In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room! ...And by doing so, you have now forced the witch to respond.
Blue Truths are something Beatrice allowed Battler to use in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, however, the catch is that the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid[32].
For example, a blue truth cannot be used to claim "There are five master keys." as that does not deny the witch, instead the phrasing must be "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"[32].
Blue truths alleges that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter[32].
However, witches can use blue truths too as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent where the opponent must disporve the blue with a red truth[34].
Blue Truths not only refute Red Truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter[33].
Golden Truths
| “ | The Golden Truth... It is the divine truth, derived through different means than the red truth. Its power is equal to the red truth- sometimes inferior, but other times superior!! | „ |
| ~ Dlanor on the Gold Truth |
Golden Truths were first introduced when Battler raised to the level of a game master and used it to prove the corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it[35]. However, golden truths can only be used by the Game Master[35] along with the strength of the truth varying, its power is equal to a red truth; sometimes inferior but other times superior[35].
Purple Truths
| “ | Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, the culprit alone is capable of lying in purple statements. | „ |
During the final game made by Bernkastel, she introduced a new statement known as "Purple Statements" (otherwise Purple Truths)[36], Battler directly asks what they are with Bernkastel responding that it's a rule devised to make the story easier to understand, purple statements have the same power as red truth, however, only the culprit can lie in purple statements[36].
Souls
One's soul can linger even after they are killed[110].
Kinzou nearly resisted through his soul being erased until a red truth was placed on him[62].
Fate
When something is fated to happen it is hard to change such, if a vase is broken even if a witch uses magic to remember its original state the ultimate fate "the vase was smashed" has not been changed thus it will remember the true state and break[61].
The Endless Witch
The infinite realm that all witches ought to aspire to, the endless witch is free of all worldy suffering, certain to eternal bliss[61]. Life and Death are empty concepts to the Endless Witch[61].
The Endless Witch succession has them pass their most secret arts to a single pupil, once they pass down their arts they retire to further stem their propagation[112].
Normal custom includes that a witch from another sect makes a recommendation before a succession may occur[112].
Lambdadelta recommended EVA and Bernkastel recommended Ange[112].
Initially the name Beatrice was not passed down but it later became customary for the name to be inherited as well with EVA following suit giving ANGE the name of Beatrice[112].
Knox's DecalogueThe ten commandments created by Dlanor A. Knox's father and used in heresy trials.
Knox's 1st: It is forbidden for the culprit to be anyone not mentioned in the early part of the story.
Knox's 2nd: It is forbidden for supernatural agencies to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 3rd: It is forbidden for hidden passages to exist.
Knox's 4th: It is forbidden for unknown drugs or hard-to-understand scientific devices to be used.
Knox's 5th: (not included)
Knox's 6th: It is forbidden for accident or intuition to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 7th: It is forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.
Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented.
Knox's 9th: It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and interpretations be heard.
Knox's 10th: It is forbidden for a character to disguise themselves as another without any clues.
The debate over the interpretation of these laws continues to this very day, and it has become the source of countless unfair controversies. While fundamentalists call any infringement upon these commandments heresy, revisionists point out that many canonized geniuses have violated these rules.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 5 Tips Knox's Decalogue
Knox's Decalogue were first mentioned by Bernkastel as a way to refute arguments used against Lambdadelta in their game.
Duel Pistol SetA set of demon duel pistols prepared by Zepar and Furfur. The number of shots loaded depends on the format of the duel. In most cases, it holds just a single round.
The emotions of the duelers are loaded into them, and if one of their bullets grazes any part of the body, the concept of the target will be denied without exception.
In the past, duels were performed in the classic style with swords, but this took a great deal of time before an outcome was reached, which displeased certain impatient theatergoing witches.
For this reason, a duel weapon that would always kill with a single shot was asked for and created.
Of course, this weapon is not particularly popular among theatergoing witches who are fans of good-old drawn out, dramatic duels.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 6 Duel Pistol Set
A pistol set created by Zepar and Furfur for duels that were made in order to reconcile impatient theatergoing witches.
Even if one grazes the other with a bullet, the concept of the target wil be denied without exception.
City of Books
"The Honored City of Books Curated By Her Majesty The Witch Of Theater, Drama, and observation", a massive "library" that contains all stories, including[77] where the entire stories in Umineko are merely a single book[77].
Virgilia describes it as a place where the witches who traverse the sea of fragments collect those fragments in text form and store them[78].
The City of Books is sacred territory under the administration of the Senate and there are holy barriers erected around it[78].
Only Witches of the Senate are allowed in the City of Books, though non-members can be given a special invitation that temporarily grants them entrance tot he sacred territory, but the invitations specify arriving on the dot, a second late tot he party's starting time and they automatically lose the effect[78].
Creators
Creators are mentioned multiple times throughout the series, however Lambdadelta defines them more properly, noting they are omniscient all-powerful beings beyond even witches[12].
Canon
Manga
The manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[115].
Anime
There are some beliefs the anime for Umineko is non-canon, however this is not true. In an interview, Ryukishi directly stated he is all for anime and manga adaptations of his works[116], which adds on to a later interview where he noted that he fully overlooks and supervises the anime suggesting one to watch all of the versions of Umineko[117].
Minor Differences
While it is noted that one won't be able to discuss all mysteries by looking at just the anime, Ryukishi not only notes[117], though as explained in the same quote, this is due to the impossiblity of having the mystery written the exact same way across different media, an anime cannot perfectly replicate a visual novel and vice versa, thus the anime is limtied in the amount of clues it can receive as opposed to the visual novel. Ryukishi himself directly notes that things need to be condensed to fit in the manga or anime versions but there's also far more fake leads in the original compared to the manga and anime and he believes one should enter into Umineko from the type of media they are most comfortable with and then look at the different formats to see the information in a new light[118].
Trivia
- Lambda's appearance is inspired by an outfit from the Japanese fashion magazine Gothic Lolita Bible, specifically featured in issue 27, page 54.
- Ryukishi07 has personally given considerable thought to the relationship between Bernkastel, Lambda, and Featherine[119].
- Ryukishi07 considers Lambda one of his favorite characters.[120].
- Ryukishi07 considers Lambda one of his favorite characters. He initially intended to portray her as a cruel, ruthless young girl, but found her "Super Paper" line upon her debut so amusing that he developed her characterization in that direction. To his surprise, she became a charming character, and he has since given her plenty of memorable scenes.
- Lambda has several connections and references to the Higurashi characters Miyo Takano and Satoko Houjou.
- Lambdadelta's full name, written in Greek numerals (ΛΔ), reads as "34." Takano's first name, Miyo (三四), translates to "three-four" in Japanese. The manga adaptation of Turn of the Golden Witch features a background figure resembling Takano shortly before Lambda's debut. Lambda's voice actress, Fuyuka Ono, also voices Takano's younger self. The extra arc Memoirs of the ΛΔ in Symphony of Catbox and Dreams has both Fuyuka Ono and Miki Itou (who voices adult Takano) overlaying their voices for the girl Lambda grants power to. Additionally, Lambda and Takano share the same birthday. In a 2009 interview, Ryukishi stated that Takano and Lambda are separate characters, but later suggested in 2015 that they could be interpreted as having the same "player." In Umineko no Naku Party ni, it is stated that Lambda gave power to a girl named Miyo in a previous game and that her current form is based on the young Miyo.
- Lambda has a similar laugh to Satoko and shares her tendency for setting traps. In Twilight of the Golden Witch, Lambda presents a cake riddle that Bern says she was unable to solve in the past, and Satoko is given a similar riddle in Onikakushi.
- In the prologue story The First and the Last Gift from Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni, Lambda notes how similar Hirasaka is to Hinamizawa.
- In Higurashi: When They Cry - GOU, Satoko expresses that her love for Rika is so great that she would never allow Rika to win, and refers to the circumstances trapping Rika in Hinamizawa as a bird cage. This metaphor is repeated throughout the series and aligns with both Takano's previous goal and Satoko's own in the sequel. Lambda has similarly spoken about Bernkastel and Beatrice's gameboard.
- In the final episode of Higurashi Sotsu, Rika and Satoko's conversation mirrors the ending of Umineko, where Bernkastel and Lambdadelta part ways and promise to reunite when something else cries, with their final lines being identical. In a post-Sotsu interview, Ryukishi was asked whether Satoko is Lambda and responded that there is no direct connection at that point. However, he noted that the flow between the two could serve as the root for what is to come, and suggested that just as Hanyuu and Eua drifted to another world, Rika and Satoko's witch personalities might also drift to other worlds and eventually become characters in another world's story.
- In Twilight of the Golden Witch, Lambdadelta expresses her hope to rank in the Top 3 or Top 5 of the popularity polls. This references the official 07th Expansion character popularity polls. She achieved third place in the first poll following the release of Twilight of the Golden Witch, though she later dropped to tenth place in the final popularity poll held in 2012.

Misconceptions
Witches lose their powers as soon as one does not believe in them/One can simply debate a witches existence away
Throughout most of Umineko, Battler and Beatrice are debating over her existence, and Beatrice's strength slowly comes back with each game[63] due in part to the hesitation within Battler's heart[63]. Battler even establishes that simply refusing to believe in Beatrice is not enough to beat her and instead will turn him more and more into the defensive until he's simply overpowered and loses[63].
It should be noted too during majority of the first episode, none of the characters left alive believe in Beatrice asides from Maria Ushiromiya, yet she was still able to manifest in the end as she killed everyone[40].
On top of this, simply not believing would not be enough to work; Beatrice makes direct note that Battler has a strong resistance to magic thus her magic cannot reach him[40].
Of extra note, Battler directly has Bernkastel helping him[1], Lambdadelta slightly raising the chances of Battler winning[2], and Beatrice's own teacher explaining to Battler how to counter Beatrice's arguments[44]. Beatrice's teacher mainly being the reason for why Battler was able to argue against Beatrice's points[121]. It was even further noted by Lambdadelta and Bernkastel that Battler couldn't win Beatrice's game even with all of the sloppy loose ends it had and the amount of help he received[122]. Battler himself realizes while Beatrice faces against Bernkastel that she was going easy on him in all their games so that it would be a fair fight between them, constantly giving Battler hints until he got used to the game[73].
Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch[64].
It's further noted too that people who've lost their sight also lose all anti-magic power and magical resistance[123].
Even while Battler was battling against Eva-Beatrice, he couldn't truly deny her witch form for good and required Beatrice to use a red truth to kill off all magic there[104][105].
Kinzou further reaffirms that Battler was born with more of his anti-magical blood than anyone else[124].
It's noted by Maria during her status as the Witch of Origins that all humans are born with toxins that block magic[60].
It's noted by Greed that humans are walking blobs of anti-magic though she can manifest as long as a witch like Ange concentrates[60].
Despite all the anti-magic toxins, due to Ange fully believing in magic and her determination being strong she was able to have her familiars interact with the human world to kill all the guards that were after her[125][126].
Eva even tries to argue that there's no way for Ange to call the seven sisters of purgatory due to her anti-magic toxins, yet she still does[126].
Thus simply denying the existence of a witch is not enough to defeat them, as Battler himself with a narrative strong resistance to magic needs a lot of help to truly even counter Beatrice. On top of this, it's specifically noted in-universe that humans built up a strong anti-magic toxin overtime that became strong enough to deny a witch's existence[127], thus this is not a weakness that applies out of universe unless a series has a similar mechanic.
Magic Isn't Real
This comes from the arguments of debates over whether or not it's truly just characters having mental issues as a way to cope with scenarios.
For example, Maria believes she is the daughter of the Holy Ghost as a way to cope with the fact that her mom abused her whenever she asked about her dad.
However, it is proven that the Meta-World is an actual place[8] that witches reside in and there are many scenes throughout the series that can't truly be explained through characters hallucinations.
Such as Ange having her familiars directly interact with the human world and kill all of its people[125][126].
The truth of "magic isn't real"/"magic is real" debate is also answered multiple times in the Umineko franchise.
Using the final talk between Beatrice and Ange, Beatrice does a magic trick and asks Ange if it is magic of a sleight of hand[15] with Ange noting it's a cheap trick but it is also magic as Beatrice has taught her this magic to spread to others to give them happiness. No matter the magic one cannot use it properly and cannot see it without love[15].
It is also repeated multiple times throughout the series how there is no one true truth, it is everyone's point of view as to what their truth is.
Effectively magic is real but also isn't, it is in the situation of a catbox.
It should also be noted that the manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[115], giving all the answers for the reader to conclude.
Witches can easily die to guns
This statement is noted by Ronove noting that witches are weak to weapons such as guns and require anti-bullet barriers in order to be made[64].
The issue is within the scan itself, within the context of Umineko, bullets specifically contain anti-magical power that cuts right through witches and demons.

He answered that in the world of Umineko, there’s the Chessboard, then the Meta Room, then the Witches World and it goes up like that. Different worlds are hierarchically piled up. After reading that, there was nothing left but to take her up on the challenge. It had been awhile since Lambdadelta had played around with a game board of substance. Since Bernkastel had gone out of her way to pass it along, it was sure to be an entertaining one.
Lambdadelta touched the Fragment.
The moment she did, an array of constellations was suspended in the air, pivoting around the Fragment and forming a miniature galaxy.
"…Oh, now this is nostalgic. So the stage is set in the Japanese countryside. Reminds me of Hinamizawa. …Though, it looks like this place is more desolate than Hinamizawa ever was. …Right then, time to pick my piece. Which one should I choose?"
Lambdadelta held out a hand, and white, black, blue, and red pieces in various shapes and sizes, reminiscent of chess, appeared in the air.
"Which one would be best? …Hmm…"
To participate in a game within a Fragment, you first must send in a piece. In other words, this was much like the character select screen of a video game.
After folding her arms and giving it some deep thought, she eventually settled on a black piece.
She wasn't sure of the situation, but if the point of the game was to survive, she figured her best option would be a sturdy, clever all-rounder with a strong desire to live.
"…In which case, it's gotta be this piece. Let's go, my other self."
She plucked the piece out of midair, then tossed it into the galaxy.
As soon as she did, an infinite number of dazzling lights scattered about, and within a moment, the world was completely buried in a sea of stars.

- ↑ 115.0 115.1 Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: The character of Sayo Yasuda in Umineko is interesting. What were your thoughts in Sayo's creation? Additionally, what were your thoughts on her expansion in the Umineko manga?
Ryukishi07: The secret of the character of Sayo is the core of Umineko's story, so her inner workings and development were designed carefully and with the utmost complexity.
In the original version, in order to leave room for imagination for the reader to solve the mystery, I chose not to draw Sayo's secrets in great detail (of course, it's still possible to grasp, but I didn't show things in a way where everyone would get it.)
With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a "period" to the "sentence" that is the world of Umineko.
Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko's eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.
Thus, all of the episode of Sayo that appeared in the EP8 manga is the official answer to the world of Umineko.
By no means is the manga version an individual interpretation. It is an official answer from me, Ryukishi07." - ↑ Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: There are many of your works that have been adapted into anime or manga. How is it decided as to which works receive adaptations?
Ryukishi07: Basically, we receive an offer from the company, and we accept it.
So far, the availability of anime and manga adaptations of our works is made possible by courteous cooperation with such companies, and for this I am sincerely grateful.
So, for those who are rooting for more anime and manga of our work, I would be happy if you could support the Japanese companies responsible. (laughs)" - ↑ 117.0 117.1 Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""Will people be able to enjoy 'the fun of speculation' in the anime and manga versions too?"
Ryuukishi: Of course. I have been supervising those very carefully. In Higurashi, there were some problems with presentation, and they were allowed to do as they pleased in certain areas. But this time, I have been checking very carefully to make sure there are 'no misconceptions in the presentation' this time, so I think people will be able to significantly enjoy speculation in those as well.
Keiya: In that case, will people who only watch the anime be able to speculate about the series?
Ryuukishi: There is an overwhelming difference in the amount of information contained in an anime and the original work, so it will probably be best to play the original as far as 'the number of hints' is concerned. But as I just said, mysteries in pictures and mysteries in text focus on foreshadowing in very different ways, so things that you didn't notice in the original might feel very out of place in the anime. Then when you return to the original and read the same scene again, you might suddenly feel that something is very suspicious in certain places...... The opposite holds true as well, since some places might not leave an impact when on screen, but the text would lead one to wonder "why is this part being described so thoroughly?" So it might be useful to see it through different mediums." - ↑ Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""If you were to assign a difficulty to the other formats, would you say that they're easier or harder than the original?"
Ryuukishi: I believe that the primary factors that decide the difficulty of a puzzle are the amount of hints and the amount of information. In that sense, you might be able to say that the original will actually be the easiest. As you know, things need to be condensed to fit in manga or anime versions. You can't just copy every line word for word and use the same description, so the amount of information naturally shrinks. Because of this, the original will always be easy as far as the quantity of information is concerned. Although there are also more fake leads in the original (laughs). But I wonder if that makes the difficulty equal between the two. Just like Higurashi, I think you should enter into Umineko from the type of media that you are most comfortable with. Then, when you also look at the different formats and see the information in a new light, you might be able to get close to something." - ↑ Shinsou Kaimei Dokuhon Episode 8. Page 20: "The relationship between [Bernkastel], Lambda, and Featherine, the witches of the top layer, is something I've set up in my brain in great detail."
- ↑ Shinsou Kaimei Dokuhon Episode 8. Page 21: "To be honest, I actually intended on characterizing her as a cruel ruthless young girl, but that "Super Paper" remark she makes upon her debut was so funny that I decided to develop her characterization in that direction. And as I did, even to my surprise, she grew to become such a charming character. She's one of my personally favorite characters so she has plenty of amazing scenes, and you can surely say she's a character who has been heavily favored by the author."
