Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Rosa Ushiromiya’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

As the youngest of the four Ushiromiya siblings by a considerable margin, Rosa grew up on Rokkenjima with no one to play with. Whenever she tried to play with the young servants, her brother Rudolf would flirt with them and take them away. Her childhood was deeply lonely, and her only companions were a collection of porcelain dolls and a rabbit doll named Uu-tan. Being a child among her already adult siblings, she was seen as an eyesore they could not understand. One day, Rudolf tore her doll to shreds—a mistake she would later repeat with her own daughter. Rosa's childhood was marked by frequent physical abuse from Krauss, verbal and psychological abuse from Eva, and every form of bullying from Rudolf, all compounded by the constant fear she felt toward Kinzo and her mother.

As a young adult, Rosa had a lover who would later become Maria's father. When he was preparing to leave overseas to build a career with the help of a loan, he promised to return for her. She believed him for a time, and because of this, she showed Maria a photograph of the two of them on the beach. However, he never came back, and Rosa was left to raise Maria alone. Whenever Maria asked about her father, Rosa avoided the subject. On one occasion, when Maria asked about the photograph she had shown her and drew a picture of it, Rosa had a violent outburst, revealing early signs of her mood swings. This pushed Maria further into the occult, as she came to believe she had no father and was a virgin birth—reinforced by a priest at her nursery school who told the story of Jesus's birth. Rosa also had to work extremely hard over the last nine years to pay off the debts from that loan.

Due to the many traumas she suffered at the hands of her siblings, Rosa kept her distance from all of them. Aside from Krauss and his family, whom she visited with Maria during holidays on Rokkenjima, she and Maria saw the rest of the family only once a year at the conference.

At some point, Rosa started her own company, Anti-Rosa. She frequently traveled for work, leaving Maria home alone to care for herself. However, according to flashbacks in the fourth game, many of these trips were actually secret vacations to lavish locations with a supposed boyfriend.

With all this accumulated stress, Rosa developed severe mood swings. She could be calm and affectionate with Maria in one moment, then abusive in the next, especially when Maria behaved childishly or in ways Rosa found particularly unsettling.

Legend of the Golden Witch
Rosa is introduced when the family gathers at the airport. Maria finds a wilted rose in the garden and wants to care for it, but later loses track of it. When she cannot find it, Rosa hits her and leaves her alone in the rain to search for it. After realizing her mistake, Rosa runs back out and embraces Maria, apologizing profusely.

Rosa is later killed during the first twilight, her head smashed beyond recognition despite her clothing being identifiable.

Turn of the Golden Witch
Rosa and Maria are on the train heading to the air station, where Rudolf, Eva, and their families are waiting. Rosa's mood shifts abruptly when an elderly woman gives an excited Maria a piece of candy. When Maria refuses to give it back, Rosa slaps her and screams at her. After calming down upon leaving the train, Rosa buys Maria a pumpkin candy, which she later smashes in frustration when Maria keeps talking about witches and the origins of Halloween to the other relatives. Beatrice then appears and uses magic to restore Maria's candy, shocking Rosa. She hands them a letter and instructs them not to open it until the proper time.

Rosa becomes the only adult to survive the first twilight and takes charge of the remaining survivors. She grows deeply suspicious of the servants, separating them from the rest of the family and taking control of the master keys. In the end, she and Maria survive the entire ceremony and head to the chapel to retrieve a gold bar. While attempting to escape the island, they are surrounded and killed by the Goats.

In the Meta-World, Rosa is tortured by Beatrice, who serves her food made from her family: a Bloody Krauss made from his blood, a salad made from Eva's tongue, a pie wrapped in Rudolf's face, and Maria's head, oven-baked with apples. Battler eventually arrives and rescues her from the torment.

Banquet of the Golden Witch
The adults begin discussing the letter from the supposed 19th person, Beatrice, and what to do about her. As the conversation continues, Rosa becomes increasingly agitated and reveals that she killed Beatrice. After calming down, she explains what happened.

In 1967, Rosa fought with her mother over her poor grades and because one of her tutors had revealed a secret to her. She fled into the forests of Rokkenjima, having heard the legend of a witch who lived there. Eventually, she found the hidden mansion Kuwadorian and discovered Beatrice living inside. The two became friends, and Beatrice told her how Kinzo visited every few days.

Rosa noticed how little Beatrice knew about the outside world and took her out of Kuwadorian. As they climbed down a cliff toward the beach, Beatrice lost her footing and fell to her death. Shocked, Rosa ran back to the mansion and kept the incident a secret. From that day on, Rosa blamed herself entirely for Beatrice's death. It also strained her relationship with her father, as she became frightened whenever Kinzo called for her.

The next day, the adults move to the guesthouse after the first twilight. Rosa solves the epitaph but reaches the gold room too late—Eva had already arrived. She congratulates her sister on finding the gold, and Eva asks her to keep it secret. Later, Rosa is sacrificed again by her own sister-turned-witch, EVA-Beatrice. She is brutally killed and resurrected repeatedly with bizarre magic. In both the anime and manga adaptations, Maria is tortured alongside her before being killed by Beatrice.

Alliance of the Golden Witch
In the 1998 scenes, Ange learns about Rosa's complicated relationship with Maria through Maria's diary.

On Maria's birthday, Rosa and her daughter celebrated at a family restaurant. As a gift, Rosa gave Maria the doll Sakutarou. Since Rosa was often away for work, leaving Maria alone at home, Sakutarou quickly became Maria's closest friend. On one occasion, Rosa told Maria she was going on a business trip, but she was actually meeting with her siblings Rudolf and Eva to discuss how to pressure Krauss into sharing the inheritance. Not wanting to involve Maria in matters that only concerned the siblings, Rosa did not take her along, despite Rudolf's suggestion, because she disliked discussing the gold in front of her. When Rosa returned, Maria found the hotel receipt and snatched it away.

One night, Maria lost the key to their home. When she went to the police, they contacted Rosa's company, Anti-Rosa, whose employees informed them that Rosa was on a date with her boyfriend in Sapporo. When Rosa returned home, a child welfare officer was waiting for her. After violently sending the officer away, Rosa blamed Sakutarou for everything, despite having told Maria repeatedly not to take her stuffed animals out in public. She tore Sakutarou apart and smashed one of the bunnies from Maria's ceramic collection.

Later, in the Meta-World, Rosa is tortured for an extended period by Maria, who repeatedly and savagely kills and revives her with Beatrice's help as revenge for years of abuse and the destruction of Sakutarou. As Rosa suffers, she verbally abuses Maria, eventually screaming that she has hated Maria since the day she was born because Maria is a constant reminder of the man who abandoned her.

Much later, Ange visits Maria and Beatrice in the Golden Land and tries to convince her cousin that the Golden Land is an illusion by reviving Sakutarou, even though Rosa had denied his existence after tearing him apart—making it impossible for even Beatrice to revive him. During their discussion, Maria briefly conjures an image of a happy Rosa, attempting to convince Ange that in the Golden Land, Rosa is always a good mother.

Rosa is sacrificed once again by Kinzo when he summons demons and witches in the dining hall. While trying to regain control of the situation, Rosa attacks her father with a chair but is killed by Chiester 00, who smashes her head with a golden arrow. In the anime, her throat is slashed open instead.

End of the Golden Witch
Rosa, along with the other parents, witnesses Battler's victory when he manages to find the gold thanks to suggestions from the new guest, Erika Furudo. Later, feeling slightly chilled, she leaves the group to go to sleep. She dies during the first twilight.

Dawn of the Golden Witch
During the love trial, Rosa is killed in the parlor by Kanon, who strikes her at supersonic speed. Later, Erika attempts to examine her corpse.

Requiem of the Golden Witch
Rosa is interviewed by Will and recounts the story of how she met and killed Beatrice. She reveals that she called Genji that night, and he swore her to secrecy while promising to handle the situation. It is also revealed that the Beatrice she met was the human Beatrice—Kinzo's illegitimate child.

In the Tea Party, after refusing to go along with Eva's plan to cover up the accidental deaths of Natsuhi and Krauss, Rosa is shot in the head by Kyrie. An unused bullet remained in Rosa's rifle, which posed a threat to Kyrie's plan.

Twilight of the Golden Witch
In Bernkastel's game, Rosa is killed during the first twilight.

During the battle in the Golden Land, Rosa fights Erika, managing to keep pace with her teleportation and nearly shooting her.

Appearance

General Description: Rosa is a young and beautiful woman with sandy brown hair styled in a hime cut. The length of her hair varies between adaptations: past her shoulders in the visual novels, and past her waist in various manga adaptations. She has fair skin, appears somewhat more flat-chested than other women, and is very thin.

Eye Color Variations: - Original PC version: Black eyes - Anime and console ports: Light brown eyes

Primary Outfit: A long, black, country-styled gown combined with a long dark red skirt. A white shirt under her coat. Long black boots with medium heels. The One-Winged Eagle family crest is embroidered in gold on her oversized white tie.

Casual Attire (Console Version): A blue navy vest over a white, wide-sleeved shirt with matching blue navy pants.

Teenage Appearance (Anime and Manga): A checkered red-and-black skirt. Her long hair worn in pigtails. A blue vest over a white, long-sleeved shirt.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: Her teenage appearance is considered a younger version rather than an alternate form.

Personality

  • Mood Swings and Violent Tendencies: Rosa has developed mood swings from the stress of raising Maria alone and working overtime. She is calm and loving one moment, then quick-tempered and violent the next, especially toward Maria, whom she physically and verbally abuses. She tends to regret her choices and apologizes to Maria by crying with her, accepting Maria's interpretation that she was possessed by "the Black Witch." She defines Maria as her only ally.
  • Intelligent and Manipulative: Though her siblings find her dumb, naive, and an easy target, Rosa is rather intelligent and manipulative. She is the only one besides Eva to solve the epitaph on her own and indirectly helped Eva find it by pointing out a key detail. In Turn of the Golden Witch, she separates servants from survivors, pretending concern and pushing suspicion onto them. She emerges as dictatorial, resentful, and vindictive, unable to trust others unless she is sure of earning something without risk.
  • Paranoid from Past Betrayals: Rosa's treatment of servants results from extreme paranoia due to numerous betrayals by her siblings at a young age. She always expects the worst from people. She is aware Battler inherited Rudolf's fondness for beautiful women and uses it to her advantage by lightly flirting with him during End of the Golden Witch.
  • Resentment Toward Family: The origin of Rosa's violent mood swings is the abandonment by Maria's father and the cruel treatment from her parents and siblings as a child. She has veiled profound resentment and hatred for all of them. In the second game, she appears subtly pleased with their deaths and is obsessed with how badly they treated her. This led to her being tortured in the Tea Party, forced to ingest their severed body parts and blood.
  • Volatile When in Power: Rosa is volatile and lashes out at others at the slightest doubt or provocation when she has power over those in disadvantaged positions. She subconsciously speaks venomously like her older siblings when expressing her real thoughts toward family and servants.
  • Ambiguous and Deceptive: Despite her poor tolerance and psychological problems, in moments of tranquility Rosa projects a kind and calm aura, deceiving most relatives including Battler, who initially saw her as the most peaceful and mature parent.
  • Obsessed with Public Image: Rosa is greatly affected by her status as a single mother in an oppressive society. She is obsessed with her public image as a woman and mother, punishing Maria discreetly and neglecting her so no one suspects anything.
  • Low Self-Esteem and Cynicism: Due to her upbringing and inability to replicate her siblings' academic achievements, Rosa developed low self-esteem, cynicism about her ambitions, and general self-contempt, worsened by failed relationships.
  • Prideful: Like Natsuhi and Eva, Rosa has a certain amount of pride. She tries to hide her complicated relationship with Maria to avoid family attacks. She refuses to talk about financial difficulties in front of Maria and left Maria alone at home to preserve her image as a good mother.
  • Hopes Maria's Father Will Return: Rosa hopes that by getting her share and repaying her debt, Maria's father will return so Maria can meet him. She knows this is unlikely and her real goal is to end her greatest regret and give herself and Maria a bright future. She is resentful of Maria's father and fears he left her to start a new family with another partner.
  • Sensitive and Empathetic as a Child: In Twilight of the Golden Witch, Rosa as a child was very sensitive and empathetic. She suffered cruel abuse from her parents and siblings and had many dolls and stuffed animals as her only friends, explaining why she spoils Maria with new toys. As a child, she wished to be an only child and dreamed horrible things happened to her siblings.
  • Aware She Never Fully Grew Up: Due to her lonely childhood on Rokkenjima, Rosa is aware she never became completely an adult mentally, as she points out in the first Episodes.
  • Ashamed of Maria's Behavior: Rosa feels immense shame when Maria behaves childishly, such as talking about magic and witches in public or treating toys as real friends. This behavior makes Maria a target of bullying and reminds Rosa of Kinzo. The name Beatrice becomes a source of debate due to traumatic memories. The troubled relationship with Maria stems from Rosa's self-hatred and feeling her life is a failure, which she unconsciously projects onto Maria due to their similarities.
  • Resilient: Rosa can be judged as very resilient because she took charge of raising Maria alone despite all adversities. She wants to try to be a better mother and build a happy future with Maria.

Goals

  • Get money (Failed).

Relationships

Maria Ushiromiya

Maria is likely the only focal point of Rosa's affection—not merely because she is her only child, but also because she is Rosa's sole true ally against the world. Tragically for Maria, this also makes her the only person with whom Rosa feels free to release the immense stress, anger, and sadness that have tormented her throughout her life. While Rosa is often abusive when angry and neglectful when exhausted, she feels profound guilt and shame for her behavior, frequently deeming herself an incapable mother. She attempts to compensate by making promises to Maria that she ultimately forgets, or by spoiling her daughter with toys and candies. Though Rosa's true feelings for Maria are called into question multiple times, it is ultimately shown that she will do anything to protect both Maria's health and her future.

Kinzo Ushiromiya

Since birth, Rosa has had a neglected relationship with her father, as the few times Kinzo interacted with her were only to scold and punish her. Their relationship was further strained when, as revealed in Banquet of the Golden Witch, Rosa witnessed the death of Beatrice as a child and blamed herself for it. For over a decade afterward, Rosa trembled at the thought of what her father would do if he discovered the truth. Her stress intensified in adulthood when she directly challenged Kinzo's authority as head of the family by choosing Maria's name herself. This offended Kinzo so deeply that he has avoided any contact with Maria since then.

Krauss Ushiromiya

Krauss is Rosa's oldest brother. The Turn of the Golden Witch Tea Party reveals that during childhood, Krauss would hit his younger sister and destroy her toys for seemingly no reason. As adults, Rosa harbors deep resentment toward Krauss because he refuses to help her financially by giving her share of the family inheritance. During family conferences, he particularly targets her, exploiting her financial crisis to make her lose her temper quickly.

Despite these negative aspects, it has been suggested that—despite the abuse—Krauss is the sibling Rosa hates the least, or perhaps the only one she cares about even slightly. Similarly, Krauss cares for her deep down and secretly regrets how he treated her as a child. The first twilight of the fourth game shows the Chiester Sisters Imperial Guard Corps beginning to kill everyone while both Rosa and Krauss express concern for each other. Additionally, Rosa herself still spent Maria's school holidays with Krauss and his family in Rokkenjima outside of the conference meetings.

Eva Ushiromiya

Eva is Rosa's older sister. During childhood, Eva frequently lied to Rosa, mocking her for being stupid enough to believe her, and often got Rosa into trouble with the rest of the family through cruel pranks. The Turn of the Golden Witch Tea Party reveals that Rosa often dreamed of biting off Eva's tongue when her sister tormented her—such as when Eva teased her on her ninth birthday, telling her she had no friends to invite and would celebrate alone.

As adults, Rosa attempts to maintain a polite attitude toward her sister, but Eva frequently targets and disrespects her even when Rosa does nothing wrong. This fuels the repressed hatred and contempt Rosa feels for her. When given the opportunity, Rosa does not hesitate to use Eva's predicaments to her advantage—as shown in Banquet of the Golden Witch, when they both solve the epitaph and Rosa blackmails Eva, promising silence about the discovery of the gold in exchange for a guaranteed legitimate share. This is also demonstrated in Requiem of the Golden Witch's Tea Party, where, during the start of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders, Rosa refuses to cover for Eva and Hideyoshi when they accidentally kill Krauss and Natsuhi, insisting they be arrested.

Rudolf Ushiromiya

Compared to Krauss and Eva, Rudolf appears to be the only sibling with whom Rosa maintains a peaceful relationship. However, as shown in The Turn of the Golden Witch Tea Party, Rudolf behaved similarly toward Rosa as a child. The Twilight of the Golden Witch manga adaptation includes a brief flashback to Rosa's childhood in which Rudolf deprived her of friends among the young servants and destroyed her precious stuffed rabbit in front of her. As adults, when Rudolf calls her in End of the Golden Witch to involve her in his and Eva's plan to gang up on Krauss and Natsuhi a few weeks before the family conference, Rosa appears very wary—if not downright hostile—toward her brother. This is especially evident when he mentions she could bring Maria with her to the meeting, or when he asks her to give his regards to his niece; Rosa promptly yells at him and hangs up without saying goodbye.

  • Usage: Used as weapons.
  • Function: Rosa uses it as apart of her fighting arsenal.

Notable Techniques

Fashion Design

As a fashion designer, Rosa has skill and competence in both drawing and sewing, enough that neither Maria nor Ange doubted her ability to create Sakutarou. According to Ange, Rosa has made a good part of the clothes she wears.

Combat Ability

Officially, Rosa does not specialize in a particular fighting style like Krauss and Eva, nor is she as skilled and experienced as Rudolf and Kyrie with firearms. However, she has proven not to be an opponent that should be underestimated. The source of her strength is her unexpressed fury that emerges when she believes she and her daughter Maria are in danger. In the Meta-World, this emotional state allowed her to kill several Goat Butlers using only a gold bar and a fountain pen. With a Winchester rifle, she can keep up with a witch of Erika's level and even put her in a difficult situation more easily than any other human or witch in Twilight, including Battler.

Standard Attacks (A Button)

Short-ranged, low damage dealing attacks, the typical fighter's attack, however these attacks come out fast[13].

Standard Attacks (B Button)

Average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks, these move also at decent speed[13].

Standard Attack (C Button)

High-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[13].

Partner Switch

The fighters can switch in with their partner fighter during battle[13].

Throw

A typical throw attack, can be countered if the opponent uses inputs throw at the same time[13].

Specials

When the special gauge is up, a character can utilize their special attacks[13].

EX Specials

Stronger specials that take away one of the fighters stocks[13].

Super

The fighter's super attack that causes two stocks to use[13].

Break Limit

A break limit is a gauge dictating how long fighters can block and guard from attacks before it breaks[13].

Touch

Guard Touch is a method to counter against guard breaks to temporarily stun the enemy[13].

Knockback Guard Touch causes the enemy to knockback from the counter[13].

Damage Touch is a combo breaker that causes the opponent to fly far away[13]. Though damage touch greatly increases the charge recovery time[13].

Assault Touch is an invicible dash attack that has the fighter crash into the opponent[13]. Though it greatly increases the charge recovery time[13]. Assault Touch can go through special attacks[13].

Stunning

Fighters can combo a fighter enough to where they enter a state where they're dizzy[13]. In this state, they cannot do bursts.

Metaworld Gauge

A red gauge appears beneath the timer. Once fully charged, a fighter can activate Meta-World at the cost of one stock, which alters the stage's appearance[15]. While Meta-World is active, the passive abilities of the activating fighter takes effect. The fighter also gains access to their meta attacks for the duration[15], as long as they continue performing the correct button inputs. The opponent can cancel Meta-World by activating it themselves as soon as it is declared[15]. In response, the first fighter may reactivate it again, provided they still have enough stocks[15].

Blue Truths

Blue Truths were introduced when Beatrice allowed Battler to use them in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, but the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid. For example, "There are five master keys" is not a valid blue truth as it does not deny the witch. Instead, it must be phrased as "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"

Blue truths allege that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter. Witches can use blue truths too, as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent, forcing the opponent to disprove the blue with a red truth.

Blue truths not only refute red truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter.

Other

Standard Tactics

  • Out of Chess Board: Rosa is normally a piece, meaning she does not debate on the chess board. Instead she decides to fight physically being able to utilize different punch and kick combos along with weapons or supernatural powers. Jessica utilizes this for strong and fiery based attacks.

Weaknesses

Explanations

Rokkenjima

Rokkenjima is an island in the Izu Archipelago South of Tokyo[28], being a small island no more than six miles across and owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family[28]. The island is plentiful with wildlife (specifically large flocks of seagulls) being left largely untouched by the Ushiromiya family and they only disappear to incite disaster occurring[29]. The island was bought by the head of the Ushiromiya Family after the great Kanto earthquake nearly brought the clan to ruin in 1923[29].

During the events of Episode 3 and onward, Rokkenjima entered a state of being a layered world, where both scientific and magical theories coexist thus neither side can cancel out the others arguments[22].

Ushiromiya Family

A wealthy family that annually goes to Rokkenjima island for family gatherings[28]. There was a time when the great Kanto earthquake brought the Ushiromiya clan to ruin in 1923 but the head of the Ushiromiya family used his considerable talent and astonishingly good luck to revive the family's fortunes, being the one to have bought Rokkenjima where he makes his home[29]. This is done due to his legendary ten tons of gold that he used as the foundation of his fortune[30], which other members of the Ushiromiya family are trying to get through inheritance of finding the location of the gold[1]. According to Kinzou Ushiromiya he got ten tons of gold by making a contract with the witch Beatrice[30].

Those that marry into the Ushiromiya family are not treated the same as those born by blood into it[1], they are never allowed to wear the family's crest even after marrying into it and are treated like a complete outsider due to not sharing the blood[1] being considered by some of the family members "glorified maid-servant"[1] and insulted at the idea of receiving any orders from those that do not share the blood[1].

The family is sat in according to the line of succession which is as follows:[1] Head of the Family, Kinzou Ushiromiya[1] -> Future Head of House, Krauss Ushiromiya (Jessica's Father)[1] -> Second in Line, Eva Ushiromiya (George's Mother)[1] -> Third in Line, Rudolf Ushiromiya (Battler's Father)[1] -> Fourth in Line, Rosa Ushiromiya (Maria's Mother)[1] -> Fifth in Line, Jessica Ushiromiya[1] -> Sixth in Line, George Ushiromiya[1] -> Seventh in Line, Battler Ushiromiya[31] -> Eight in Line, Maria Ushiromiya[1] -> Ninth in Line, Natsuhi Ushiromiya (Jessica's Mother)[1] -> Tenth in Line, Hideoyoshi Ushiromiya (George's Father)[1] -> Eleventh in Line, Kyrie Ushiromiya (Rudolph's Second Wife)[1]

Spirit Attunement

It's explained by the family servant Chiyo Kumasawa that every human being has the ability to sense the presence of ghost, but this affinity gradually fades with age, characters like Maria Ushiromiya being the youngest of the family is able to sense oncoming calamities and disasters[28].

Witch of Rokkenjima

The Witch of Rokkenjima is a legend[29] that was told to the children of the Ushiromiyas about how Beatrice comes on dark, stormy nights wandering out of the forest in search of human sacrifices[1]. With this legend also comes a mystery with Beatrice's epitaph that reads as follows:

If you seek the Golden Land, follow the river and seek the key downstream, you will find a village. In this village, seek the shore of which two will speak. There the key to the Golden Land sleeps.

Whoever finds the eky should follow these directions to the Golden Land.

On the first night, offer up as sacrifices the six the key chooses.

On the second night, those who remain will tear apart the two who are close.

On the third night, those who remain will praise my noble name.

On the fourth night, gouge the head and kill.

On the fifth night, gouge the chest and kill.

On the sixth night, gouge the belly and kill.

On the seventh night, gouge the knee and kill.

On the eighth night, gouge the foot and kill.

On the night night, the witch will revive, and none shall be left alive.

On the tenth night, the journey will end, and you shall reach the capital in which the gold dwells.

The witch will praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold in the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be the ressurection of love lost. One shall be the witch, put into an eternal sleep.

Rest in peace, My beloved witch, Beatrice.

The Witch's Epitaph Original Japanese Text

Despite it being a legend, Beatrice the witch is real and exists[32].

It is also revealed by Genji that Beatrice was the second lover of Kinzou who perished before the mansion was built and he spent years focusing on his dark arts in order to revive her[33].

Debates

There is a plane that watches the regular plane where one can deal with debating, effectively the same as a chess game[35], effectively being the same as viewing them from a different plane[35] where witches can simply restart over and over the game, the number of times they can play being entirely up to them[35].

Gameboards can have witches effectively get everything they want, making it harder to prove them wrong during a debate[36]. One can tweak facts previously established on the game board to effectively create new rules and truths[37].

Gameboards can have turns stalled if one of the members refuse to continue[22], one can even fall into the reality of the game board[22].

Death is also handled differently in the gameboard where the lost of a piece means they simply bide their time on the side of the chessboard[22]. One's voice cannot reach into the Game Board[38].

Along with this it has no effect on anything in the main world[39].

It is established further in Battler's game board against Eva Beatrice that witches are allowed to[40][41] resurrect the dead for testimony[40] the human side cannot use this move even if there's witches on their side[40]. Along with this, witches can[41] bind one in solid undeniable red truths that they cannot break out of unless they can deny the truth[41]. Though red can also be used to fully deny a witch[41] exposing the answers and destroying all the magic[41].

Witches can also add new pieces into the Gameboard that function as detectives[42].

Each gameboard is its own world with each one's conclusion having an effect on reality[42]. For example, Eva Ushiromiya being the only survivor in one of the gameboards allowed her to live in the real world and escape the island, even when Ange found other bottles that listed the other game worlds endings.

Each gameboard exists as one small game in the endless sea of Fragments[43].

Pawns

Pawns are pieces on the game board set by the people in the Metaworld.

Some pieces have awareness that they're pieces on the game board[44].

The rights a pawn are given within a game allow them to enforce their rights within the gameboard making them able to push others off of them if it gets in the way of their role in the game[45].

The injuries pawns receive in a game board[17] or events they experience within a game board[17] have no effect on those in the metaworld[46]. Battler even makes note that the versions of him and Beatrice on the game board aren't actually them but just pawns under the Game Master's control[47].

Pawns cannot do what it deems impossible, and will execute actions best suited to the original personality[47], Dlanor notes that due to this, if Battler and Beatrice of the game board were in the same position as the pawn they would have done the same thing[47]. Battler makes note that the people within the chessboard aren't a meter metaphor, they really are chessboard pieces[48].

Game Masters

Game Masters are the controllers of the game board. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[49].

In these games, they are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[50] with these gameboard stories being compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[50].

The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[48].

Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[51].

Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[52]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[53].

Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[54].

Battler as Game Master learns how difficult in reality game board stories are to construct[55] with Beatrice constantly agonizing over contradictions in her story and a constant battle with logical fallacies[55] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[55].

Noted during Ange and Featherine's discussion that the Game Master is allowed to smoothly alter their plot at will[56].

Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[57], known as "the right to spectate"[57].

Death in the Gameboard

Death in the Game Board occurs in two ways[55] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[55], the other being the death of being outside of the game[55] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore, Beatrice gave up her victory during the previous game causing her to die and disappear[55] thus she will never come back to life[55].

It is later revealed that Beatrice as the game master made all of these stories as an attempt to hide the true story in Rokkenjima of the Ushiromiya's all being killed by Rudolf and Kyrie before Eva killed both of them[58].

Truths

Red Truths

In that case... From now on, when I speak the truth, I will use red.
~ Beatrice introducing the Red Truth

During the gameboard between Battler and Beatrice, she introduced the concept of red truths, where when she speaks the truth, she will use red[37]. Everything said in red is the truth[37], when speaking the truth one is under no obligation to provide further proof that will confirm the truth of what they say[37]. They cannot[37] be used[37] for things where they cannot give an explanation with a red truth[37]. Red truths can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided[37]. It is normally advisable to not use red truths when one already has the advantage[59]. They can be used even to insult one as if it was the truth[60] along with being used to fix quick mistakes[60]. In Episode 3 when explaining red truths again Beatrice notes everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute[61]. Battler finds out the loophole to red truths as they're a double-edge sword that can cut one down if they're not too careful with it, where the red is actually information that exposes the truth and allows one to formulate a counterattack if used incorrectly[62].

The red truth is defined as an absolute truth, a tool available to witches[16]. It is later shown that witches can permit humans to use Red Truths[18].

Red Truths[18] cannot be used[18] to force oneself to speak in red when they cannot which will cause them to suffocate[18].

It is noted by Ronove that there are no red truths in the Human World[44].

The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing[63].

Red Truths can only be said about actual truth[56], if a witch's trick contradicts the red truth then it is a lie which breaks the rules.

Battler later reveals there are two types of red truths, one for red that applies to a specific game board and a red truth that is shared across all game boards and can operate in the world outside of the cat box too[64].

Blue Truths

Beatrice: As of now, Battler, I will allow you to use the blue.

Battler: Blue...? Meaning that I can demand that you repeat my words if I say them in "blue"? Beatrice: Not quite. Your requests could be concerning any minute detail. But the blue truth must deny the witch's position, or it is not valid. Battler: ?

Beatrice: For example: "There are five master keys." This is merely a confirmation of the number of keys and does not deny the witch. In order to use the blue, you must change your phrasing. In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room! ...And by doing so, you have now forced the witch to respond.

Blue Truths are something Beatrice allowed Battler to use in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, however, the catch is that the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid[16].

For example, a blue truth cannot be used to claim "There are five master keys." as that does not deny the witch, instead the phrasing must be "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"[16].

Blue truths alleges that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter[16].

However, witches can use blue truths too as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent where the opponent must disporve the blue with a red truth[18].

Blue Truths not only refute Red Truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter[17].

Golden Truths

The Golden Truth... It is the divine truth, derived through different means than the red truth. Its power is equal to the red truth- sometimes inferior, but other times superior!!
~ Dlanor on the Gold Truth

Golden Truths were first introduced when Battler raised to the level of a game master and used it to prove the corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it[65]. However, golden truths can only be used by the Game Master[65] along with the strength of the truth varying, its power is equal to a red truth; sometimes inferior but other times superior[65].

Purple Truths

Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, the culprit alone is capable of lying in purple statements.

During the final game made by Bernkastel, she introduced a new statement known as "Purple Statements" (otherwise Purple Truths)[66], Battler directly asks what they are with Bernkastel responding that it's a rule devised to make the story easier to understand, purple statements have the same power as red truth, however, only the culprit can lie in purple statements[66].

Souls

One's soul can linger even after they are killed[59].

Kinzou nearly resisted through his soul being erased until a red truth was placed on him[67].

Fate

When something is fated to happen it is hard to change such, if a vase is broken even if a witch uses magic to remember its original state the ultimate fate "the vase was smashed" has not been changed thus it will remember the true state and break[61].

The Endless Witch

The infinite realm that all witches ought to aspire to, the endless witch is free of all worldy suffering, certain to eternal bliss[61]. Life and Death are empty concepts to the Endless Witch[61].

The Endless Witch succession has them pass their most secret arts to a single pupil, once they pass down their arts they retire to further stem their propagation[68].

Normal custom includes that a witch from another sect makes a recommendation before a succession may occur[68].

Lambdadelta recommended EVA and Bernkastel recommended Ange[68].

Initially the name Beatrice was not passed down but it later became customary for the name to be inherited as well with EVA following suit giving ANGE the name of Beatrice[68].

Knox's Decalogue

The ten commandments created by Dlanor A. Knox's father and used in heresy trials.

Knox's 1st: It is forbidden for the culprit to be anyone not mentioned in the early part of the story.

Knox's 2nd: It is forbidden for supernatural agencies to be employed as a detective technique.

Knox's 3rd: It is forbidden for hidden passages to exist.

Knox's 4th: It is forbidden for unknown drugs or hard-to-understand scientific devices to be used.

Knox's 5th: (not included)

Knox's 6th: It is forbidden for accident or intuition to be employed as a detective technique.

Knox's 7th: It is forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.

Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented.

Knox's 9th: It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and interpretations be heard.

Knox's 10th: It is forbidden for a character to disguise themselves as another without any clues.

The debate over the interpretation of these laws continues to this very day, and it has become the source of countless unfair controversies. While fundamentalists call any infringement upon these commandments heresy, revisionists point out that many canonized geniuses have violated these rules.

Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 5 Tips Knox's Decalogue

Knox's Decalogue were first mentioned by Bernkastel as a way to refute arguments used against Lambdadelta in their game.

Duel Pistol Set

A set of demon duel pistols prepared by Zepar and Furfur. The number of shots loaded depends on the format of the duel. In most cases, it holds just a single round.

The emotions of the duelers are loaded into them, and if one of their bullets grazes any part of the body, the concept of the target will be denied without exception.

In the past, duels were performed in the classic style with swords, but this took a great deal of time before an outcome was reached, which displeased certain impatient theatergoing witches.

For this reason, a duel weapon that would always kill with a single shot was asked for and created.

Of course, this weapon is not particularly popular among theatergoing witches who are fans of good-old drawn out, dramatic duels.

Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 6 Duel Pistol Set

A pistol set created by Zepar and Furfur for duels that were made in order to reconcile impatient theatergoing witches.

Even if one grazes the other with a bullet, the concept of the target wil be denied without exception.

City of Books

"The Honored City of Books Curated By Her Majesty The Witch Of Theater, Drama, and observation", a massive "library" that contains all stories, including[71] where the entire stories in Umineko are merely a single book[71].

Virgilia describes it as a place where the witches who traverse the sea of fragments collect those fragments in text form and store them[72].

The City of Books is sacred territory under the administration of the Senate and there are holy barriers erected around it[72].

Only Witches of the Senate are allowed in the City of Books, though non-members can be given a special invitation that temporarily grants them entrance tot he sacred territory, but the invitations specify arriving on the dot, a second late tot he party's starting time and they automatically lose the effect[72].

Creators

Creators are mentioned multiple times throughout the series, however Lambdadelta defines them more properly, noting they are omniscient all-powerful beings beyond even witches[73].

Trivia

  • Rosa is the only character with six unique death sprites, the maximum number possible. This is because she dies in each of the first six arcs, and only one of those deaths occurs during the tenth twilight.
  • The TIPS entries for Sakutarou's death, and for Chiester 556's as well, in Alliance of the Golden Witch suggest that Rosa may have a meta-world counterpart. Her name is written in katakana (ローザ) in the Japanese version and in all caps (ROSA) in the official English translation, mirroring how other characters with human and witch counterparts are handled.
    • This idea appears to be further supported in Golden Fantasia, where some dialogue options that many magical characters direct at Rosa explicitly refer to her as a Black Witch. Lambdadelta in particular goes so far as to accuse Rosa of being a witch who denies her own nature during a casual dialogue exchange if the two fight each other.
  • Rosa's company, Anti-Rosa (アンチローザ Anchirōza), is a reference to the real-life Japanese clothing company Auntie Rosa. Rosa's company is also referenced in Higurashi as Michiru Sakurada's favorite clothing brand.
  • Along with Battler, Beatrice, and Ange, Rosa is one of the only characters to have consistently ranked in the Top 10 of all three major popularity polls, placing fourth in the first and eighth in the other two.
  • In the Japanese fanbase, Rosa has earned the nickname "Rosa Musou" (楼座無双), a reference to the Dynasty Warriors style of games, inspired by her last stand at the end of Episode 2[78].

Umineko When They Cry -Episode 6- Dawn of the Golden Witch

Misconceptions

Witches lose their powers as soon as one does not believe in them/One can simply debate a witches existence away

Throughout most of Umineko, Battler and Beatrice are debating over her existence, and Beatrice's strength slowly comes back with each game[31] due in part to the hesitation within Battler's heart[31]. Battler even establishes that simply refusing to believe in Beatrice is not enough to beat her and instead will turn him more and more into the defensive until he's simply overpowered and loses[31].

It should be noted too during majority of the first episode, none of the characters left alive believe in Beatrice asides from Maria Ushiromiya, yet she was still able to manifest in the end as she killed everyone[79].

On top of this, simply not believing would not be enough to work; Beatrice makes direct note that Battler has a strong resistance to magic thus her magic cannot reach him[79].

Of extra note, Battler directly has Bernkastel helping him[80], Lambdadelta slightly raising the chances of Battler winning[81], and Beatrice's own teacher explaining to Battler how to counter Beatrice's arguments[22]. Beatrice's teacher mainly being the reason for why Battler was able to argue against Beatrice's points[82]. It was even further noted by Lambdadelta and Bernkastel that Battler couldn't win Beatrice's game even with all of the sloppy loose ends it had and the amount of help he received[83]. Battler himself realizes while Beatrice faces against Bernkastel that she was going easy on him in all their games so that it would be a fair fight between them, constantly giving Battler hints until he got used to the game[52].

Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch[84].

It's further noted too that people who've lost their sight also lose all anti-magic power and magical resistance[85].

Even while Battler was battling against Eva-Beatrice, he couldn't truly deny her witch form for good and required Beatrice to use a red truth to kill off all magic there[40][41].

Kinzou further reaffirms that Battler was born with more of his anti-magical blood than anyone else[86].

It's noted by Maria during her status as the Witch of Origins that all humans are born with toxins that block magic[87].

It's noted by Greed that humans are walking blobs of anti-magic though she can manifest as long as a witch like Ange concentrates[87].

Despite all the anti-magic toxins, due to Ange fully believing in magic and her determination being strong she was able to have her familiars interact with the human world to kill all the guards that were after her[88][89].

Eva even tries to argue that there's no way for Ange to call the seven sisters of purgatory due to her anti-magic toxins, yet she still does[89].

Thus simply denying the existence of a witch is not enough to defeat them, as Battler himself with a narrative strong resistance to magic needs a lot of help to truly even counter Beatrice. On top of this, it's specifically noted in-universe that humans built up a strong anti-magic toxin overtime that became strong enough to deny a witch's existence[90], thus this is not a weakness that applies out of universe unless a series has a similar mechanic.

Magic Isn't Real

This comes from the arguments of debates over whether or not it's truly just characters having mental issues as a way to cope with scenarios.

For example, Maria believes she is the daughter of the Holy Ghost as a way to cope with the fact that her mom abused her whenever she asked about her dad.

However, it is proven that the Meta-World is an actual place[34] that witches reside in and there are many scenes throughout the series that can't truly be explained through characters hallucinations.

Such as Ange having her familiars directly interact with the human world and kill all of its people[88][89].

The truth of "magic isn't real"/"magic is real" debate is also answered multiple times in the Umineko franchise.

Using the final talk between Beatrice and Ange, Beatrice does a magic trick and asks Ange if it is magic of a sleight of hand[91] with Ange noting it's a cheap trick but it is also magic as Beatrice has taught her this magic to spread to others to give them happiness. No matter the magic one cannot use it properly and cannot see it without love[91].

It is also repeated multiple times throughout the series how there is no one true truth, it is everyone's point of view as to what their truth is.

Effectively magic is real but also isn't, it is in the situation of a catbox.

It should also be noted that the manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[74], giving all the answers for the reader to conclude.

Witches can easily die to guns

This statement is noted by Ronove noting that witches are weak to weapons such as guns and require anti-bullet barriers in order to be made[84].

The issue is within the scan itself, within the context of Umineko, bullets specifically contain anti-magical power that cuts right through witches and demons.

He answered that in the world of Umineko, there’s the Chessboard, then the Meta Room, then the Witches World and it goes up like that. Different worlds are hierarchically piled up. Sometime the critic may be aimed at the characters in the world below, sometimes at the readers, but he’ll leave it at our imagination to guess when."
  21. [When They Cry] The First and Last Gift "The letter ended there.
After reading that, there was nothing left but to take her up on the challenge. It had been awhile since Lambdadelta had played around with a game board of substance. Since Bernkastel had gone out of her way to pass it along, it was sure to be an entertaining one.
    Lambdadelta touched the Fragment.
The moment she did, an array of constellations was suspended in the air, pivoting around the Fragment and forming a miniature galaxy.
"…Oh, now this is nostalgic. So the stage is set in the Japanese countryside. Reminds me of Hinamizawa. …Though, it looks like this place is more desolate than Hinamizawa ever was. …Right then, time to pick my piece. Which one should I choose?"
Lambdadelta held out a hand, and white, black, blue, and red pieces in various shapes and sizes, reminiscent of chess, appeared in the air.
"Which one would be best? …Hmm…"
To participate in a game within a Fragment, you first must send in a piece. In other words, this was much like the character select screen of a video game.
After folding her arms and giving it some deep thought, she eventually settled on a black piece.
She wasn't sure of the situation, but if the point of the game was to survive, she figured her best option would be a sturdy, clever all-rounder with a strong desire to live.
"…In which case, it's gotta be this piece. Let's go, my other self."
She plucked the piece out of midair, then tossed it into the galaxy.
As soon as she did, an infinite number of dazzling lights scattered about, and within a moment, the world was completely buried in a sea of stars.
Within those bright lights, Lambdadelta's consciousness was sucked away…"

  74. 74.0 74.1 Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: The character of Sayo Yasuda in Umineko is interesting. What were your thoughts in Sayo's creation? Additionally, what were your thoughts on her expansion in the Umineko manga?
Ryukishi07: The secret of the character of Sayo is the core of Umineko's story, so her inner workings and development were designed carefully and with the utmost complexity.
In the original version, in order to leave room for imagination for the reader to solve the mystery, I chose not to draw Sayo's secrets in great detail (of course, it's still possible to grasp, but I didn't show things in a way where everyone would get it.)
With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a "period" to the "sentence" that is the world of Umineko.
Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko's eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.
Thus, all of the episode of Sayo that appeared in the EP8 manga is the official answer to the world of Umineko.
By no means is the manga version an individual interpretation. It is an official answer from me, Ryukishi07."
  75. Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: There are many of your works that have been adapted into anime or manga. How is it decided as to which works receive adaptations?
Ryukishi07: Basically, we receive an offer from the company, and we accept it.
So far, the availability of anime and manga adaptations of our works is made possible by courteous cooperation with such companies, and for this I am sincerely grateful.
So, for those who are rooting for more anime and manga of our work, I would be happy if you could support the Japanese companies responsible. (laughs)"
  76. 76.0 76.1 Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""Will people be able to enjoy 'the fun of speculation' in the anime and manga versions too?"
Ryuukishi: Of course. I have been supervising those very carefully. In Higurashi, there were some problems with presentation, and they were allowed to do as they pleased in certain areas. But this time, I have been checking very carefully to make sure there are 'no misconceptions in the presentation' this time, so I think people will be able to significantly enjoy speculation in those as well.
Keiya: In that case, will people who only watch the anime be able to speculate about the series?
Ryuukishi: There is an overwhelming difference in the amount of information contained in an anime and the original work, so it will probably be best to play the original as far as 'the number of hints' is concerned. But as I just said, mysteries in pictures and mysteries in text focus on foreshadowing in very different ways, so things that you didn't notice in the original might feel very out of place in the anime. Then when you return to the original and read the same scene again, you might suddenly feel that something is very suspicious in certain places...... The opposite holds true as well, since some places might not leave an impact when on screen, but the text would lead one to wonder "why is this part being described so thoroughly?" So it might be useful to see it through different mediums."
  77. Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""If you were to assign a difficulty to the other formats, would you say that they're easier or harder than the original?"
Ryuukishi: I believe that the primary factors that decide the difficulty of a puzzle are the amount of hints and the amount of information. In that sense, you might be able to say that the original will actually be the easiest. As you know, things need to be condensed to fit in manga or anime versions. You can't just copy every line word for word and use the same description, so the amount of information naturally shrinks. Because of this, the original will always be easy as far as the quantity of information is concerned. Although there are also more fake leads in the original (laughs). But I wonder if that makes the difficulty equal between the two. Just like Higurashi, I think you should enter into Umineko from the type of media that you are most comfortable with. Then, when you also look at the different formats and see the information in a new light, you might be able to get close to something."
