Background
Soul Edge is the primary antagonistic force of the Soulcalibur series. Although initially forged to be an ordinary sword, it was bathed in blood and hatred over the course of hundreds of years, until it became a cursed sword that fed on the souls of the innocent. It gained sentience, which manifested in its wicked avatar known as Inferno.
Acting as the driving force for nearly ever character in the series, Soul Edge is seen as an all-powerful sword that grants the wishes to those who reclaim it. In truth, however, this evil sword takes possession of its wielders, and uses them as their puppet to seek out souls.
Most notably, Soul Edge took possession of the German knight, Siegfried, and transformed him into the Azure Knight, Nightmare. Soul Edge's fondness over the Nightmare persona persisted even after Siegfried broke free of its grasp, and so Inferno itself became the new Nightmare.
Soul Edge's hatred and chaos went on to manifest in a realm known as Astral Chaos, which also became the home of the horrific Night Terror—another avatar of the sword itself, who represents its completed form. Soul Edge, if it were to devour all souls and reach its completed state, would become unstoppable.

Equipment
- Soul Edge: An evil blade with a reputation for devouring souls. This weapon is also known to be a shape-shifter—which form it takes depends on its current owner. The forms it has taken are legendary, as are the souls of the renowned warriors it has consumed. In the hands of Inferno, the avatar of the Soul Edge itself, the blade is capable of taking any form that it wishes. Inferno usually changes the form it uses between each round of combat.
-
Soul Edge
- Soul Edge (Phantom): A mirage of the original Soul Edge, created through Nightmare's own memories of the original sword. While it retains the Soul Edge's ability to devour souls, it is still a much less potent version of the actual blade. It is created in the same manor at which Inferno creates his mimics of other character's weapons.

It is an evil weapon which saps the strength of the enemy it wounds and rends the soul of the one who holds it.

Soul Edge
- Soul Edge (Complete): Soul Edge, after recovering all of its fragments and becoming whole once more. Even after covering the entire world in darkness, it is safe to assume that it has not come close to reaching the limits of its terrible power. Night Terror is the manifestation of this ultimate form of Soul Edge, and as such always carries it around.

Optional Equipment
- Steel Paddle: A giant iron paddle. It has no blade and thus has no cutting ability, but it can cause plenty of destruction with its size and weight alone. As one would expect, it is very useful for defense as well.
-
Steel Paddle
- Soul Edge (Larvae): The smallest and weakest looking version of Soul Edge. It is simply an all black sword with blood red stripes that has only a passing resemblance to the original sword.
-
Soul Edge (Larvae)
- Soul Edge (Cocoon): This is the form Soul Edge took when first wielded by Siegfried, the very first time he ever picked up the blade after defeating the possessed corpse of Cervantes. In this form, Soul Edge has a severe lack of power, as it has yet to break out of its shell and become the Soul Edge that Nightmare is more well-known for wielding.

Soul Edge
- Giant Squid: Nightmare's joke weapon, which acts as a large blunt weapon in the shape of a gigantic squid.
-
Giant Squid
- Soul Edge (Nauplius): The original form of Soul Edge, named after the larval form of all crustaceans. This was the form that Soul Edge took when wielded by the son of the Hero King Algol, Arcturus.

-
Steel Paddle
- Claymore: Seemingly designed to be a regular claymore, though it distinctly has a skeletal design befitting of Nightmare.
-
Claymore
- Giant Buster: A peculiarly curved sword with spiked protrusions sticking out from the bladed side. Causes brutal damage but can get caught on things easily.
-
Giant Buster

Giant Squid
Other
Weaknesses: Soul Edge can be destroyed fairly easily if struck in the correct spots. It can let out maelstroms of power too immense for Nightmare's body to withstand.
