I'm Pippi. I'm lost. You're really brave, huh? You're such a goofball! Hahaha! Okay! Let's go back to town now! I'm too scared. You lead the way, Ninten.

Background

Pippi is a playable character in MOTHER (localized as EarthBound Beginnings), and the first character to join Ninten, even if temporary. Unlike other unnameable characters in the MOTHER series that join the party, her actions are not autonomous as if she were a nameable character. Though she doesn't have PSI, she has high stats across the board. She can equip the Slingshot.

Pippi is a young girl who lives on the outskirts of Mother's Day, near Ninten's home, with her mother Lindgren. At the beginning of the game, Ninten learns from Lindgren that Pippi has gone missing. Upon arriving in Mother's Day, Ninten meets with Mr. Mayor, the head of Mother's Day, who is preparing for re-elections at the time. To make himself out to be a hero and have the town vote in his favor, he enlists the help of Ninten to rescue Pippi from the Cemetery to the south.

Ninten braves the zombie-laden cemetery to find Pippi locked in the leftmost coffin in an underground tomb. Upon being rescued, Pippi may give Ninten a Franklin Badge if two questions are answered correctly (if not, the badge can still be received if she is spoken to in her home). Pippi then joins Ninten's party as a playable character, and the two return to Mother's Day. When the two arrive at the City Hall, Mr. Mayor, eager for his name to be in the headlines as a hero, bribes Ninten to allow him to take the credit for rescuing her with money and the key to the City Zoo. Pippi is left in the mayor's care and subsequently appears in front of her house with her Mother for the rest of the game.

Along with appearing in front of her house, she also makes an appearance at the house in the swamp near Ellay. She tells Ninten that she sneaked out of her house and asks Ninten to not tell her mother. Speaking to her there will trigger Ninten and friends to "stay the night" and recover all their hit points and psychic points.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Weapon Mastery (She can also use boomerangs and slingshots), Astral Projection (When party members are unconscious they are immediately transported to the hospital until they're picked up, where the cast will have ghost sprites that are acknowledged by characters, and characters directly feeling their presence, and acknowledging they are speaking to their "soul", showing the cast create an astral projection from their soul that observes the party while they are unconscious in the hospital), Enhanced Senses (Still able to hit enemies even while blinded. Can sense when enemies are nearby through the check system), Extrasensory Perception (Can sense danger in places that people who normally can see ghost can’t), Regeneration (Mid-Low overtime; Able to take attacks such as zombie bites, animal bites, and explosions without being hindered and can heal from them with PSI and by eating food items. Can quickly recover from being dehydrated. Staying at a rest area overnight completely recovers Hp and Pp), Information Analysis (Able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent along with their stats. At the end of the game Maria’s conscious is able to help Ninten and co. with the check stat), Accuracy Manipulation (Ana’s increase of wisdom raises the chance of inflicting status ailments on an enemy, whether from items or certain PSI techniques), Statistics Boost & Rage Power (Capable of increasing her offense through screaming), Accelerated Development (Battle & Leveling; Physical Stats & Abilities; Naturally gets stronger as she progresses, naturally gaining resistances through leveling up. Her fight, speed, offense, defense, and strength increases at a far higher rate then the rest of the cast in battle), Non-Standard Interaction (Soul Interaction; Can kill and interact with ghosts), Empathic Manipulation (Defeating enemies causes them to lose their bloodlust and calm down), Observation (Unconscious Manifestation; Comparable to Ninten who through ignoring the Forgotten Man, Ninten makes him disappear, it is noted by a resident of Magicant that he was once well known but everyone forgot him), Has the potential for: Subjective Reality, Creation, Illusion Creation (Standard Illusions), & Mind Manipulation (Magicant is a universe created entirely from the users own memories[3]. It exists only within the mind of the user and is shaped entirely by their thoughts and desires. Magicant World's are shaped from the users perspective. Maria for example warped her own world to fit her views as a Queen. Ness's Magicant was shaped almost like a Town with stars and planets in the background. Along with that, users of Magicant can create weapons, equipments, healing items, and inhabitants that represent a certain side to their mind (A strong example would be the Flying Men which represents the users own courage). Some inhabitants act as enemies that will attack or serve as either a memory of the users own experience or simple civilians. It's unknown if there is a Sea of Eden in other variations of Magicant, however it is stated by Talah Rama that the Truth makes itself known to humanity with Magicant. Magicant only disappears once the goal of the user has been met. To provide some insight, Maria's goal was to recover from amnesia and remember the melody she sung to Giygas, and Ness's goal was to awaken his full potential by touching the Universal System. The journey has to be a momentous part of the person's life that culminates in an event that causes them to look inward and triggers the ability to access their magicant).

Resistance to Disease Manipulation (Zombie bites do not affect her), possible Poison Manipulation (As she is in this late game area and likely encountered the enemy she's possibly resisted the effects of the Stinger), Mind Manipulation (Madness Manipulation; Can resist Giygas’s influence, even while he’s fighting him, whose black clouds appearing over the mountains caused all the townsfolk and its people to go crazy. Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sleep Manipulation (Force decreases the chances of puzzled, confusion, or sleep working on Ninten), Sense Manipulation, Poison Manipulation, & Paralysis (The more Ninten’s strength raises the less chance he has of being hit with Blindness, Poison and Paralysis), Information Analysis (If Ninten is put into a position where he checks Pippi there will be no effect)

Equipment

Equippable Weapons

  • Slingshot: Ranged weapon that raises offense by 7. Has a higher chance of missing then other weapons.

*Insecticide: Instantly kills any arthropod-based enemies.

*Franklin Badge: Passively reflects against lightning and light based attacks.

Foods

  • Crumbs: Used to make it out of dungeons quickly.
  • Bread: Heals 20 HP.
  • Orange Juice: Heals 10 HP.
  • SportsDrink: Heals 100 HP.
  • Medicine

    • Antidote: Neutralizes poison.
    • AsthmaSpray: Heals Ninten's asthma.

    Other

Standard Tactics: Pippi will use regular attacks along with items that are best suited for the situation.

Weaknesses: Pippi is not a PSI member of the party. Can contract colds just from people simply coughing near her or sneezing near her. Their astral forms are unable to interact with anything, where it's shown characters like Jeff being unconscious makes him unable to fix broken items as his conscious physical body is not there.

    Explanations

    Trivia

    • Pippi is the only temporary party member until Mother 3 who can level up, have her own inventory, and equip weapons and armor like a main party member.
      • The only weapons Pippi is able to equip are the Slingshot and Boomerang, although only the former can be acquired while she is still in the party.
    • Pippi's stat growth rates are identical to Teddy's.
      • As a result, besides PP, Wisdom, and Force, Pippi outranks Ninten in every stat, so many players hold on to her for as long as possible.
    • Despite being restricted to such an early section of the game, Pippi can still be present for obtaining two melodies. The first is the one in the broken Doll at Ninten's house if it was skipped earlier, and the second is from Laura at Canary Village.
    • In the Japanese Famicom version of the game only, if Pippi had Bread Crumbs in her inventory when delivered to the mayor, she will be able to return them to Ninten if he speaks to her at her house. If Ninten didn't previously use Bread himself, the game will end up using an invalid value for the destination supposed to be travelled to, resulting in Ninten being transported to a glitchy, grey version of the overworld. To fix this, all subsequent releases of the game were changed so that Pippi will no longer give Ninten her bread crumbs if she had any.
    • An unused enemy in Mother closely resembles Pippi, for unknown reasons.
    • If one plays throughout the game without returning Pippi (through hacking), she will not appear in the house at the swamp.
    • The Japanese name of Clefairy from Pokémon, another series by Creatures Inc., coincidentally is Pippi (ピッピ).
