Pan

From The Codex

You are not my grandpa! I've got stuffed animals at home bigger than you!
~ Pan after discovering Son Goku turned into a kid
I'm tired of everyone treating me like a little kid.
Wait a sec. These look like the same clothes Grandpa was wearing before he went off with Shenron.
You think you can get rid of me that easily? This old gal's not ready to kick the back yet.

Background

Pan is the granddaughter of Earth's hero, Son Goku and the world champion, Mr. Satan and the deuteragonist of Dragon Ball GT. Her heritage is primarily Earthling, being the offspring of the Saiyan-Earthling hybrid Son Gohan and the Earthling Videl, thus making her a quarter-Saiyan. She's been stated to have inherited Gohan's great potential.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Pan’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Peaceful World Saga Pan is shown in Dragon Ball Z at the age of four. In her infancy, she spent a lot of time with Goku, so she trained a lot. When she was 4 years old, she was already regularly flying around the world, and attempting to beat her best times. Before the official start of the 28th tournament, she also accompanied Goku to fairgrounds, although after an incident where a punk knocked her and her ice cream over and then rudely flipped her off, she nearly threw a tantrum until Goku provided her with another ice cream. Though very young at age four, she is well trained by her grandfather, Goku, as she effortlessly defeats Wild Tiger, a large, muscular man, with just two punches that knock him straight into a wall during the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament.

On the closing scenes of the Dragon Ball Z anime, she is fighting Goten and appears to have won, as Trunks holds her hand up in victory (this was presumably not an official match, as indicated by the "Canceled" sign above the outside of the arena, the concept that the crowd was departing and Trunks being the referee).

Range: Standard Melee Range, Interstellar with Ki Attacks (Ki attacks can reach out of the planet and to other planets. All ki attacks should be comparable to Goku's kamehameha, which reached all the way to the sun)

Intelligence: Gifted (At the age of only 4, Pan is an incredibly powerful fighter with a lot of potential, has consistenty shown throughout the series to be an impressive fighter. A metal machine who analyzed Trunks and Goku's battle data notes that Pan possesses an incredible power not in the data[6])

Powers and Abilities

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Martial Arts, Flight (Flew around the world), Longevity (Saiyans can keep their youth until around 80 years old), Reactive Power Level (A saiyan’s power increases if they survive from injuries in battle, with their powers allowing them to greatly exceed their previous levels beforehand), Rage Power (Mere rage can amplify a saiyan to a level that's believed to be a myth even by the highest levels of saiyans in the verse), Damage Boost (Saiyans attack power rises when health is low), Statistics Amplification (Saiyans have all of their stats rise when they're revived), Chi Manipulation & Ki Manipulation (All beings in Dragon Ball have ki, the very life force energy of all characters, ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard, higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them. A users ki aura can exert itself as a weapon to attack), Attack Reflection (All Ki users are able to reflect attacks just by being stronger than their opponent. Examples include, Nappa deflecting a masenko from Son Gohan, Son Gohan being able to bounce back the spirit bomb, Son Goku deflecting a crusher ball from Jeice, Frieza deflecting a Final Burst Cannon from Vegeta, Son Goku reflecting multiple death beams back to back from Frieza, and Future Trunks being able to completely repel an energy blast with his hand from a Frieza Soldier just by being much stronger than them), Homing Attack (Ki users can create attacks that will home in and chase a target forever), Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training), Power Absorption & Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others), Aura (Has an aura of ki surrounding him whenever he exerts ki), Vibration Manipulation (Powerful ki users can cause the very ground itself to shake when they power up), Pseudo-Fear Manipulation, Limited Soul Manipulation & Pain Manipulation (Ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce, along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed, exerting fear into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power), Forcefield Creation (Ki users such as Cell can generate forcefields around themselves. These forcefields can be expanded, and used to protect others and defend against attacks far higher then the user), Light Manipulation (Ki can be used as a flash of light), Non-Physical Interaction (Those with Ki were able to harm the Ghost Warriors), Healing (Ki can be used to heal beings, allowing them to survive even with half their torso, it can also heal from near death), Fusionism (Pan can perform the Fusion Dance), Resistance to Gravity Manipulation (Pan resisted the gravitational pull of a star that was 68 times the gravity of Earth[7])

Standard Equipment

  • Turtle School Uniform: A Gi worn by Pan as a child which she acquired from her grandfather Goku.
  • Dragon Radar: An invention of Bulma made to track down Dragon Balls. While Goku and other people can sense the Dragon Balls' energy in a general area, the Dragon Radar can pinpoint their exact location from across the entire planet. This let Goku and his friends track all the Dragon Balls within days rather than years, or hours with teleportation.
  • Gill: Gill, originally known as T2006 or DB4649T2006RS, is a Machine Mutant that accompanies Goku, Pan, and Trunks on their quest to find the Black Star Dragon Balls. After eating the Dragon Radar, the radar itself appears on Giru's back.

Notable Techniques

*Flight: The ability to fly through the use of ki. Pan was able to fly as an infant without any formal training, but forgot how to consciously do at some point afterwards. At the end of the events of Super Hero, she relearned how to fly and can do so at will.

  • Ki Blast: The most basic form of energy wave.
  • Kamehameha: A powerful Ki blast fired with two hands after concentrating a large amount of Ki.
    • Multiple Kamehameha: Two or more fighters fire multiple Kamehamehas simultaneously at a single point. This usually causes their separate Kamehamehas to merge into one giant Kamehameha blast at the opponent.
      • Galaxy Tri Attack: A team attack where Goku, Pan, and Trunks fly in with Trunks hitting the opponent with a kick followed by a punch from Goku, then a kick from Pan before they finish the opponent off together with a Multiple Kamehameha. Used by Goku, Pan, and Trunks as their Ultimate Super Attack in Dokkan Battle.
      • Grandfather-Granddaughter Kamehameha: First, Pan and Goku each prepare their own Kamehameha attacks. Then, they both fire them at the same time so that the two energy waves merge into one giant Kamehameha blast at the opponent, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
  • Full Power Energy Wave: Pan starts by charging an energy sphere in their hands. Then, she draws her hands forward and fire the energy sphere in the form of an energy wave at the opponent, inflicting a great amount of damage.
  • Maiden's Rage: First, Pan brings her hands down at her sides and charges yellow energy spheres. Then, she draws them together in front to fire them in the form of an energy wave at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
    • Reliable Friend: First, Pan punches her opponent up into the air and flies after them. Then, Giru appears in front of Pan and says "Giru to save Pan! Giru! Giru!" to which Pan replies with, "Thanks, Giru!" Next, Giru flies at the opponent and dodges all of their punches while Pan charges yellowish-orange energy spheres in both of her hands in fashion similar to her Maiden's Rage and says "Here goes!" Finally, when Giru flies away from the opponent, the opponent turns around at Pan, who blasts them with many reddish-orange energy spheres fired from her hands, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
  • Invisible Eye Blast: A Kiai technique shot from the eyes.
  • Masenko: The attack is performed by the user placing both hands above the head with the palms facing the target and one hand in front of the other with the fingers going in opposite directions. When the user thrusts their hands forward, they call the name and fire a beam of yellow, white, or orange energy.
  • Explosive Wave: A technique where the user bursts out ki from all over their body in order to repel the opponents around them.
    • Maiden's Burst: Pan screams and releases a large amount of energy from her entire body to knock an opponent back. After performing the attack she does a "striking pose", similar to her father.
  • Spirit Attack: A blue blast of energy fired from both hands used by Pan. Named and used in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.
  • Spirit Shot: A sparkling yellow energy ball with a pink outline. Named and used in the Dragon Ball Z Collectible Card Game.

*Honey Bee Costume: During her adventures on Monmaasu, Pan finds a cute Bee costume which she wears during the episode "Like Pulling Teeth". Though the costume does little to conceal Pan's humanoid appearance it manages to fool the giant bees of Monmaasu into mistaking Pan for their queen causing them to kidnap her. Fortunately, Goku and Trunks rescue the real queen bee from a giant spider web. In Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle, the costume appears as a playable form called Pan (GT) (Honey) which can be acquired through the Bonus Event: "Pan's Secret Adventure".

Other

Standard Tactics: Pan will use hand to hand fighting along with ki attacks.

Weaknesses: Has shown to be quick to temper, leading her to make rash deicisons that can mess with her allies in a fight.

Trivia

  • Pan's name is the Japanese word for bread, which in turn comes from the Portuguese word "pão" also meaning bread.[12] It continues the food-based names of Gohan's family.
    • Coincidentally, Pan is also the name of a Greek deity who was associated with the Devil due to his goat legs. Thus, Pan's name also continues the family naming traditions of her mother and grandfather.
    • Pan could also refer to pan pipes, an instrument often attributed to said Greek deity, thus making the name a tribute to Piccolo.
  • Pan is the first offspring of a Saiyan-Earthling hybrid (Gohan) and an Earthling (Videl) making her the first 1/4-Saiyan 3/4-Earthling. Additionally she is also the first female Saiyan-Earthling hybrid as she was born a year before Bulla who was the first female 1/2-Saiyan 1/2-Earthling hybrid. Interestingly, her father Gohan was the first 1/2-Saiyan 1/2-Earthling and first male Saiyan-Earthling hybrid born, as well as the only Saiyan-Earthling hybrid to be born with a tail.
  • So far, Pan is the youngest female character in Dragon Ball history to have the ability to fly, having done so as an infant. However she shares this trait with Turbo Norimaki, who was the youngest male character capable of Flight as an infant in both Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump. However Pan is shown to be a more advanced flyer as she produces a visible aura when flying while Turbo uses it for simple levitation.
  • In the original Japanese subtitled version of the FUNimation DVD, Goku Jr. is said to be Pan's great-great grandson, instead of her grandson. Since Pan would have been at least 100 when he was born, this would make much more sense considering the huge age gap between the two, giving more room for the other generations. This also decreases the Saiyan blood in him, though, he is still able to transform refuting the idea that Pan's lack of a Super Saiyan transformation was due to her Saiyan blood being diluted (which would not make sense as Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. have even less Saiyan blood than Pan, yet both can transform). Another strange fact is that while Pan lacks the Son surname that all her paternal relatives (except Chi-Chi) possess, her great-great grandson is referred to as Son Goku Jr., which is not possible (even if Pan did use the surname, after all), as that would mean whichever parent that Goku Jr. inherited his last name from would have inherited it from Pan, who would be their great grandmother. It is however possible that they merely stuck the surname to the boy for his similarity to his ancestor.
  • In "Dragon Ball Super Episode 9", when the others learn of Videl's pregnancy, Chi-Chi suggests they name Pan "Gomen" (which is both the puns on the Son boys "Go" and noodles "men").[13] However, this was before Chi-Chi or anyone knew the child's gender and was just a suggestion to Gohan and Videl.
  • Pan appears with Goku, Trunks and Giru in a chapter of the Dr. Slump sequel series, Dr. Slump Returns.
  • In Xenoverse 2, if the Future Warrior is a Saiyan while training under Pan she may ask them "If I trained really hard, do you think I could transform into a Super Saiyan, too? Wouldn't I look super cute with blonde hair? Look at that reaction! You totally want to see it!" This indicates she wishes to one day attain the form herself.
    • Ironically, in the Xenoverse series, if Pan's Bandana is worn by Female Saiyans (which causes their hair style and color to match Pan's) and a Super Saiyan or Super Saiyan 2 transformation is used, the hair will turn golden blonde, despite Pan having yet to achieve the transformation herself.
      • Interestingly, in the latest patch of Xenoverse 2, the hair on Pan's Bandana no longer turns blonde, instead simply glowing like other wigs.
    • It should be noted that Daizenshuu 7 and Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File both state that Pan and Bulla have the potential to attain the transformation if the proper conditions are met, such as the arrival of the evilest dangers. The main reason why she and Bulla never did was Akira Toriyama that at the time couldn't figure out how to draw female Super Saiyans (this was before female Super Saiyans appeared in official Dragon Ball media such as video games as well the appearance of Caulifla and Kale in Dragon Ball Super) which is the main reason why Pan and Bulla lack Super Saiyan forms despite both possessing the potential to do so. However, given the appearance of female Super Saiyans now, it is possible that she may acquire the transformation at some point in the future.
  • In Xenoverse 2, Pan expresses interest in performing fusion with the Future Warrior twice once during conversation. After the 1.09.00 Update, she wants to try her hand at Fusion Dance, though is apprehensive about fusing and decides she and the Future Warrior should work on combining their attacks first resulting in her teaching them her Dual Ultimate Attack skill instead. However even after filling her Partner Gauge there is still no fusion between the two, indicating she presumably got cold feet, fusion between them was too difficult, and/or she found the fusion dance poses too embarrassing.
    • In Dragon Ball Fusions, Pan can utilize the Fusion Dance to perform EX-Fusion while wearing a Metamo-Ring. Though she herself complains about having to perform the fusion dance poses for both EX-Fusion and Five-Way Fusion (however ironically she smiles while performing either of them) as she finds them uncool and embarrassing which fits with her dislike of posing in general. Presumably she puts up with it for the sake of the power of those fusions provide.
  • In Future Trunks' timeline, Pan does not exist due to the fact that her parents never met, her father Future Gohan was killed by the Androids, and the fate of her mother Future Videl in that timeline is unclear.
    • In Xenoverse 2, Pan meets Future Gohan in a special event where see mistakes him for his counterpart though he tells her she is mistaken and neither realize their relation. Humorously, Pan considers him cooler than her dad and notes that she wishes her father were more like him.
  • In World Mission, it is revealed that Beat is a descendant of Goku's though it isn't specified whether he is descended from Gohan or Goten's family lines thus it is unclear if Beat is a direct descendant of Pan's (as she is Gohan's only known child) or blood relative if he is descended from her Uncle Goten's family line.
