~ Ayla |
Background
Ayla is first introduced to the party when Crono and his friends visit the prehistoric era to repair Frog's sword, The Masamune, to assist in their battle against Magus, leader of the Mystics and murderer of Frog's best friend Cyrus. The broken pieces of the Masamune are acquired after the party defeats Masa and Mune, the guardians of the blade. The shards are taken to Melchior, a swordsmith and Guru, who cannot repair the blade without Dreamstone, a crimson-colored rock of ancient origin—so ancient that the party must travel millions of years into the past to recover a sample. Upon their arrival in Mystic Mountain, they are ambushed by a seemingly ceaseless swarm of Reptites. Ayla shows up to fight them off and invites the time-travelers to her village for a party. Ayla, as chieftain due to her strength and will, is the keeper of the Dreamstone, and during the party, if Crono beats Ayla at an alcohol-chugging competition (censored in the English version as "soup"), she willingly forks it over. However, when the sun rises the next day, they find the camp has been ransacked by Reptites and the Gate Key stolen. Tracking the reptilian marauders to Forest Maze, Ayla convincesKino to admit he had stolen the Gate Key out of jealousy, after which point the Reptites stole it from him. Ayla, Crono, and the others invade the Reptite Lair, defeat Nizbel, and take the Gate Key from Azala so they can return to the present and repair the sword.
She does not appear again until the battle against Magus transports the party back to Prehistory. Alongside Ayla, Crono and the others battle the Reptites and witness the origin of Lavos at Tyranno Lair. As the alien parasite falls from the sky as a "Red Star", Azala predicts an Ice Age will claim the land. It is at this point that Ayla names "Lavos", a word she made up from the root words "La" meaning "fire" and "Vos" "big" in the Iokan language.
Ayla's strong morals convince her to join the party permanently after this.

---|
Chrono Trigger Prior to the year 65,000,000 BC., Ayla became chief of Ioka village due to her strength and fearlessness, acquiring a Piece of the Dreamstone as a symbol of that office. She led her people in the war against the Reptites, assumedly since the beginning of her time as chief. When the mysterious time-travelers from the Future arrived, Ayla temporarily relinquished her post to join them in their quest to stop Lavos. Kino, her mate, probably served as chief in her place. Outside the Forest Maze, right before the defeat of Nizbel in the Reptite Lair, she mentions that upon falling terminally ill or upon dying, Kino will become chief of the Ioka Village. Because of this, it seems that the title of chief does not necessarily travel to the strongest or most courageous of the Iokan Tribe, but rather, progresses to the spouse or the next genetic heir, much like the monarchy that exists in following eras. After Lavos hits the planet, dust blasts into the atmosphere and blocks out the sun. This causes an ice age and the extinction of the Reptites; Ayla subsequently retires from her duties as chief; and after the defeat of Lavos, Ayla returned to the time era 65,000,000 BC. and then she married Kino with a Dreamstone ring. As she is the distant ancestor of Marle and the Guardia Royal Family, she and he produced a lineage that survived the Ice Age and even survived the Fall of Zeal. Chrono Cross In Chrono Cross, Ayla does not make an appearance in the game; but, however, a young girl from a prehistoric era named Leah bears a strong striking resemblance to her in manner and appearance. Leah also told Serge at the end of the game that she will name her child "Ayla", the name meaning "New song of land" according to her. |

*Petal: Used for Ioka trading material.
*Jetbike: The Jetbike is a vehicle in the Future. Crono and company use it to race through Site 32 against Johnny. It requires the Jetbike Key to operate.
-
Although the Jetbike is used in the future for the first time, in the image, Crono is riding with Ayla. This could be easily explained as Crono goes back to the future and races against Johnny again.
- Dactyl: Dactyls are a form of transport in the Prehistory era of Chrono Trigger. They are winged reptiles that can be ridden. The chief of Laruba Village keeps the secret to riding Dactyls. When Ayla prepares to assault Tyranno Lair, she uses Dactyls to reach the mountaintop keep. Crono is able to use dactyls freely in Prehistory after defeating the Tyranno Lair. In the game, dactyls function like the Wings of Time (obtained much later) by allowing Crono to fly around the world and traverse oceans, mountains, and other barriers they could not cross on foot.
- Epoch: The Epoch can access any of the key time eras in Chrono Trigger. The party initially seeks it after being sealed out of the Antiquity time period by Schala, following the advice of Gaspar. It does not rely on pre-existing Gates to operate. Once aboard the Epoch, Crono can access the Time Gauge. This gauge dominates the console of the Epoch and allows the pilot to select a destination time period Era. The Epoch is theoretically able to travel anywhere in time Era, the areas of note that the party usually travel to with it are Prehistory (65,000,000 BC), the Antiquity (12,000 BC), the Middle Ages (600 AD), the Present (1000 AD), the Apocalypse (1999 AD), the Future (2300 AD), and even the End of Time. At first, it operates the same way that the Gates do, depositing the travelers at the same physical location in different eras in time. This limits its use as a spatial transport. As shown in a cutscene, the Epoch possesses engines that cause it to hover in mid-air. The ship creates a time distortion directly in front of it, and the massive rockets at the rear of the ship propel it into the distortion. This has the effect of propelling the ship and its passengers forward, although they do not move in space at all. When the Epoch arrives at its destination in time, the lift engines shut down, lowering the Epoch to the ground in the same physical location. At a certain point in their adventure, the party loses the Epoch to Dalton. He modifies the ship with technology aboard the Blackbird, giving it the ability to fly. After he is defeated, the party regains use of the now flight-enabled Epoch. Using it, the time travelers can access any era or location in any point in time, which is necessary for certain side quests as well as reaching the Black Omen at any point in history.
Notable Techniques
*Punch: Robo runs up to the enemy striking them fiercely with his arm.
- Critical Hit: Robo jumps over to the enemy and hits them with a hard right hook, dealing devastating damage.
- Counter-Attack: When equipped with certain accessories Ayla will counter when an enemy attacks her without taking up a turn.
*Kiss: Marle blows a kiss the allies way, lightly healing them and curing them of status ailments.
*Drill Kick: Drill Kick is a Tech used by Crono and Ayla in Chrono Trigger. Ayla jumps over to Crono who starts to spin her around at fast speeds until she starts spinning like a top and strikes an enemy with an penetrating kick.
*Twin Charm: Twin Charm is a double tech used by Marle and Ayla. Learned once Marle and Ayla learn Allure and Charm respectively, the two combine their feminine wiles to increase the success rate of Ayla's ordinary Charm tech. Wearing Alluring Top does not increase the likelihood that this tech will succeed. When cast, the two assume their usual tech stances and several pink hearts circle the screen before entering an enemy. If successful, a white box wrapped in red ribbon is thrown into Ayla's hands and the screen displays which item was looted. If unsuccessful, the two shake their heads side to side and no present will appear on screen.
*Flame Kick: Flame Kick is a Double Tech used by Lucca and Ayla in Chrono Trigger. Dealing massive amounts of damage compared to Techs learned earlier in the game and normal physical blows, it is a very powerful Double Tech. When cast, Ayla promptly jumps atop Lucca, who then casts Fire around her. Ayla starts spinning around Lucca and then goes to the enemy, performing a very strong kick. Fire erupts from the point of impact, and the enemy makes a frightened gesture with their face in return.
*Slurp Kiss: Fully restore all allies' HP and status.
*Boogie Robo: Inflict Stop on all enemies. Alya spins around while Robo moves about with a spotlight shining on Ayla, the two of them shifting all around the screen. Clocks appear on all enemies and they get inflicted with the Stop status.
*Final Kick: Final Kick is a very strong Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger. It is performed by Crono, Marle and Ayla. It deals more than 7000 damage in its strongest form. Ayla jumps into the air as Crono and Marle start their spells combining them together into a small orb that Ayla keeps knocking into it to have her powerful kicks supported by Ice and lightning.
*Gatling: Gatling Kick is a Triple Tech that is used by Crono, Ayla, and Lucca in Chrono Trigger. It combines Lightning II, Fire II, and Triple Kick to create a strong powerful tech.
*3-D Attack: 3-D Attack is a Triple Tech that is used by Crono, Ayla, and Frog in Chrono Trigger. It combines Cyclone, Triple Kick, and Slurp Slash to create a strong powerful tech. Crono and Frog do their X-strike cutting through the enemy as Ayla jumps into the air and kicks the enemy with devastating force.
*Twister: Twister is a Triple Tech that is used by Crono, Ayla, and Robo in Chrono Trigger. It combines Cyclone, Tail Spin, and Laser Spin to create a strong powerful tech. In the attack, Robo starts by jumping toward the center of the screen and begins spinning. Crono then jumps on top of him like he does in Rocket Roll and spins as well. Ayla joins the boys as the top of the tower and all three of them spin around and around, creating a massive black twister which splits into another. Every target present receives massive Shadow damage after the move ends.
*Poyozo Dance: The Poyozo Dance is a Triple Tech learned by Ayla, Marle, and Lucca. The White Rock is the item that is needed to perform this Triple Tech. One of the three characters that participate in the move must have White Rock equipped, and the characters must already know Allure, Hypnowave, and Tail Spin. As the move begins, the three dance; Lucca spinning, Marle using Allure, and Ayla pounding the air. Then 3 triangles similar to that of the white triangle in Dark Matter appears and they start changing all colors of the spectrum. Meanwhile; Lucca, Marle, and Ayla will appear in random locations with different poses. A Poyozo Doll will appear and move around the screen as well. When the move is complete; the poyozo doll flies into the air and the three characters stand in their original positions.
*Spin Strike: Spin Strike is a Triple Tech that is used by Ayla, Robo, and Frog in Chrono Trigger. It combines Aerial Strike, Robo Tackle and Tail Spin to create a strong powerful tech.
Omega Flare is a Triple Tech that is used by Lucca, Robo and Magus in Chrono Trigger. It combines Flare, Laser Spin and Dark Bomb to deal supreme Shadow elemental damage. It's the strongest of the special Triple Techs.
Other
Standard Tactics: Ayla’s style of fighting is mixed with scratching and her techs, with equipment she uses to defend from various physical attacks and magical spells. Ayla is naturally better at fighting with a team so she normally will summon her friends across time to help her in combat and do various team attacks. If the enemy proves very powerful she might use the Epoch to ram it.
Weaknesses: Does not have any magic due to existing before magic was created.
Note: The 50% of damage absorption does not mean they absorb 50% of the damage and take the other 50% of damage, it means that they convert 50% of the damage into health, while the other 50% is neglected.
Note 2: Ayla’s “fist” are not extra items but just her regular fist upgraded as she gains more levels thus it is not added as a part of equipment but naturally how her power grows.
