Background

Queen Zeal is the matriarch of Antiquity in Chrono Trigger. She is the sole ruler of the Kingdom of Zeal, the most magically advanced civilization throughout Chrono Trigger 's timeline. It is unknown how the Queen came to obsess over the power of Lavos, but by the time Crono and his friends encounter her, she is dangerously fixated on drawing upon Lavos' energies in an effort to become immortal.

Zeal is maniacal in her efforts to gain power and immortality. She displays a haughty attitude, creating a society which is entirely self-centered, and further centered on her. Her own people are both slavishly devoted to her and terrified of her. She is paranoid and manipulative, gladly abusing the vast magical talent that her daughter Schala displays in order to further her goals. The well-being of her children is forgotten in the face of her desperate desire for power, and she shows a willingness to sacrifice any number of beings in her efforts.

However, it is mentioned by many, including the Gurus, that Queen Zeal did not always behave in such a power-hungry and inhuman manner. Melchior observes that the Queen's psychological degeneration appears tied directly to how much of Lavos' energy she absorbs through the Mammon Machine. Though Schala recognizes her mother's madness, she remains emotionally torn over her inability to accept her mother's behavior. Janus, the Queens only known son, reveals his feelings that Queen Zeal has ceased to be his mother, that she has somehow been changed by the power of Lavos.

It is during the rule of Queen Zeal that humanity first comes into possession of magic, which is revealed to be a concentrated form of Lavos' power. It is this power which Zeal believes will make her immortal. Indeed, after the events in the Ocean Palace and the rising of the Black Omen, Queen Zeal does seem to obtain some form of immortality, since she exists in any time period that the Omen can be found in. It is possible, though, that this is due to the Omen's time-bending nature rather than proper immortality. Queen Zeal makes her final stand against Crono at the heart of the Black Omen, where she is finally defeated.

It is important to note that Queen Zeal is extremely unique in terms of her relationship with Lavos. She is the only known entity to establish any sort of a rapport with the creature. She treats Lavos as a god-like being worthy of worship, yet at the same time Lavos makes no attempt to absorb or destroy her, and indeed seems to follow her commands during the fateful encounter in the Ocean Palace. Also potentially noteworthy, Lavos does not mimic her powers during Crono's encounter with him, despite the fact that she is one of the most powerful boss characters in the game. All of this may suggest a unique relationship between the two, with Zeal's worship both drawing strength from and channeling power into Lavos. However, the actual dynamic of their relationship is never fully explored, and one can only speculate as to its true nature.

• Heavenly Gate: A powerful light/holy magic attack from the heavens.
• Gear of Darkness: A powerful dark magic attack that causes massive explosions.
• Starburst: An incredibly powerful water attack being her most powerful attack, hitting all enemies at once.
• MP Buster: Absorbs all the MP the opponent has left to equally restore her own. This attack also acts as an auto counter if her left hand is attacked in her second form.
• Life Shaver: Reduces a single party member's HP to 1. This attack is only an auto counter if her right hand is attacked in her second form.

Other

Standard Tactics: Zeal will start using the move halation, reducing her opponent's HP to 1 then proceed to death kiss them and shoot energy spheres at them. Once defeated in base they will send the opponent into the Mammon Machine where if they do not have a resistance to absorption they will be absorbed and become one with Lavos, if they do defeat the Mammon Machine though then Zeal will transform where she will start shooting out lasers and using moves such as heavenly gate, gear of darkness, and starburst. If either of her hands are attacked the opponent gets counter attacked with life shaver, reducing their HP to 1 or MP buster, removing all of their MP. If even her second transformation is defeated she will summon Lavos.

Weaknesses: As her innate element is fire she has a natural weakness to water element spells.

Note

• There has been some questioning on the validity of whether Lavos summoned alternate versions of himself or just revived parts of himself as the official bs Chrono Trigger character library notes the pod on the right as the "true form" of Lavos along with his ability to to revive parts of him being shown during his first phase. However this misses some key points regarding the way he revives the pods back. The way he revives his helpers is them simply coming back from nothing and continuing the fight, however the way Lavos "revives" the pods is opening up a time gate bringing them back, along with this the entire fight is based off the center shifting through time itself, with this what "Lavos true form" moreso likely means is that this is the true Lavos of the timeline and the others are alternative timeline Lavos'.
• Lavos' rains of destruction feat that reaches across the entire planet didn't life wipe as there's humans still around but also, 2300 A. D. shows a lot of the planet wasn't destroyed in the conventional sense. A lot of vehicles and technology still work and the overall landscape while very bleak, isn't fully destroyed, thus there's no way to say he significantly affected the overall planet enough to warrant a High 6-A rating, however due to it greatly affecting the atmosphere, it does grant High 6-A.
• There has also been questioning on Lavos creating the time gates due to a scene where Robo makes note that he thinks them saying Lavos creating the time gates is wrong, this is however contradicted by the scene of Lavos landing and a time gate appearing from where he landed and a time gate existing in him, along with this it's a purely theoretical idea posed by Robo never further expanded upon while Lavos has tangible evidence and has full control over space-time. Thus we have disregarded Robo's statement.
