Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Sans the Skeletons’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Genocide Route Like his Undertale counterpart, Sans the Skeleton introduced himself to the human and even became friends with them at one time before the human started to get curious and reset the timeline. The human who was known as Frisk to Sans began a series of Genocide routes before getting bored, leaving Chara to continue killing everybody in the Underground in case anything changed.

Sans himself never remembered these timelines always being subjected to being killed at the end of a Genocide route. However, something changed after the 327 consecutive Genocide route, in where Sans suddenly remembered every single route that he believed at time Frisk committed and vowed to stop the cycle of Genocide even if it meant killing everyone in order to stop them.

When the next timeline reset happened, Sans tricks Toriel into letting him into the Ruins under the guise of helping Toriel protect the ruins from an unknown killer. Unbeknownst to Toriel, Sans started killing monsters to get stronger and leave Frisk with less EXP than usual. When Toriel leaves Sans behind to check if any humans had fallen into the Underground, Sans angrily calls her number and tells her to get back to him. When she returns with Sans, Sans stays quiet while she talks about extra measures in protecting the ruins, only for him to kill her with a Toy Knife, leaving the Ruins doing so.

Sans then goes to presumably killing high EXP-wielding monsters in the area where the Mysterious Door is found in Snowdin. Unaware of Frisk approaching them, they get attacked which they dodge and panics before attacking them to try and kill them. When he gets hit, he flees the area in order to not get killed by Frisk.

Sometime after his encounter with Frisk, he either finds Papyrus or is found by Papyrus to which Sans quickly mortally wounds him, trying to justify his actions to Papyrus, to which Papyrus begs for his life before accepting his fate as he thought if this would be make Sans happy, he would gladly die. This causes Sans to have a mentally collapse, finding enjoyment in his quest to stop the human by killing other monsters and his friends.

Sans proceeds into Waterfall where he starts seeing a floating Papyrus head apparition, one who seemingly encourages his goal and berates him if he is unable to win against Frisk. Sans proceeds to evade Undyne until she eventually confronts him, leading to a short fight in which Sans is successful in defeating her. Undyne near death calls Sans out for his hypocrisy, causing him to angrily dismiss her and not see Frisk steal the kill on him. Seeing as he has been set back a bit, he leaves without confronting them and looks for his next target.

Once in Hotland, Sans breaks into Alphys' lab, destroying the place in hopes of finding her and killing her. Failing to find her, he waits for Frisk to find the key to the True Lab, where he sneaks in and eventually catches up Alphys who attempts to kill him with the Determination Extraction Machine. This fails, prompting Sans to kill her shortly after. Sans leaves and kills Muffet on his way to New Home.

Before Frisk proceeds to the CORE, they walk into the restaurant where Sans tries guilt tripping them about their actions, and shows his decayed mental state.

When Frisk is distracted fighting Mettaton NEO, Sans is waiting for both of them to get distracted and Mettaton NEO to get weakened so he can steal the kill. He leaves to try and get the Six Human Souls from Asgore, and when he is unable to convince him to give them up, he promptly kills him and returns to the Last Corridor to face the human one last time.

Sans confronts Frisk trying to kill them enough times to make them give up and make him the being with the most determination to ultimately reset the timeline and get rid of Frisk once and for all. He boasts about his success and shares an understanding with Frisk. Sans never dodges believing himself to be strong enough to withstand any blow, up until the last one which mortally wounds him. Sans cackles at his situation as he believes he will just remember everything that had happened in the current timeline and learn from it, eventually killing Frisk for good. Frisk smirks as Sans starts to forget everything that had happened, causing him to be stuck in another loop in which he kills everybody in the exact same way, dooming them eternally.

True Ending Everything is the same up until the final encounter with Frisk, in which Sans realizes that Frisk has not been attacking him. He stands in confusion up until Chara tries to kill him, causing Frisk to escape their control and take the hit for Sans. Sans understands immediately what happened and decides to help Frisk in order to get rid of Chara and reset the timeline back to before any Genocide routes occurred. Sharing his soul with Frisk, they both become more determined than Chara and ultimately delete them from existence. Sans thanks Frisk and resets the timeline.

In the epilogue, Sans reflects on the actions he did during that timeline and eventually celebrates a party with all his friends which includes Frisk.

Name Meaning

Sans name is a reference to the font "comic sans", this is part of the reason he also speaks in it. According to Toby this was playing on the joke of Comic Sans and Papyrus being the most hated fonts at the time.

Appearance

General Description: Sans is a relatively short and paunchy skeleton with mitten-like hands. He is seen at first with a more apprehensive smile before gaining a crazed look in his eyes and an exaggerated smile. He covers his head with the hood from his hoodie.

Facial Features: He normally has white dots in black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered, but during his madden state he has red irises with black pupils, which gains a small dark blue iris when stressed temporarily but stays as he becomes more violent. During the fight, a purple flame crackles out of his left eye.

Clothing/Outfit: A blue hoodie with a white t-shirt underneath. Black shorts with white stripes covered in dust. A pair of white slippers.

Personality

  • Proactive and Violent: Upon remembering all 327 past timelines, Sans' psyche breaks down and decides the only logical way to stop the cycle of Frisk and Chara's Genocide Routes is to beat them at their own game by killing monsters before they do to gain LV. His methods include performing betrayal kills and stealing the kills of Frisk/Chara, effectively playing dirty to be able to win.
  • Selfish and Insanity: In order to complete his goal, Sans starts to kill everybody in order to become more determined than Frisk/Chara, actively lying to himself that what he is doing is just and shifting blame for his actions, blaming the Human instead. Upon being forgiven by Papyrus for his actions which Sans denied, he completely breaks, laughing maniacally and finding his actions to be very funny to him.
  • Cocky Fool: After several setbacks and even after he is defeated, Sans laughs at Frisk/Chara by mocking their attempts at defeating him. He eventually starts treating the killings as mere competition between him and Frisk treating it like a game that he can just restart and learn from his mistakes the next time around. It is not until Sans realizes that he will not be able to remember what he did or learn to win against Frisk/Chara that he starts to panic.

Goals

  • Gain Determination to Stop the Human (Failed in Genocide, Succeeded in True Ending)
  • Reset the Timeline (Failed in Genocide, Succeeded in True Ending)

Relationships

Sans's behavior toward the human shifts based on their choices throughout the Underground. Under the circumstances of Dusttale, he actively tries to avoid running into them so that he can increase his LV to grow more determined than Frisk to stop their endless cycle of Genocide Routes. During the True Ending Route, Frisk breaks free from Chara's influence which causes Sans to snap back to his normal self being confused by their mercy and comes to an understanding that both of them did terrible things so he forgives them to defeat Chara and reset the timeline.

Sans initially believes Frisk as the sole party responsible for hundreds upon hundreds of Genocide Routes that caused Sans existential distress. He himself unable to find a solution to stop the cycle of Genocide Routes, decides to do whatever he can to stop Frisk even if it means that he has to kill everybody he knows and loves if it means a return to normalacy.

His obsession with stopping Frisk and his hatred of them causes him to play a twisted game with them, trying to see which one of the two will come out on the top. Upon his defeat in the Genocide Route, he manically laughs as he tells them they won the battle, but will remember their interactions next time around so he can eventually defeat them. This turns into a state of panic when he realizes they cannot remember anything regarding his tactics or killing anyone, fearing that he started another loop with him killing everyone, he asks Frisk if their fight was the first time, before being abruptly killed by them.

During the events of the True Ending Route, Sans attacks Frisk in the The Last Corridor, but gets confused as Frisk just stands still instead of attacking. Upon almost getting killed by Chara, Frisk separates themselves from Chara's control and takes the hit for Sans. This causes him to go back to his normal attitude where he starts to realize that Chara was the one behind the endless cycles of the Genocide Routes. Reluctant at first, Sans realizes that he is no better than Frisk and decides to give aid Frisk by giving them his determination to overcome Chara and delete them from existence, performing a reset of the timeline to where everything is back to normal.

Sans does not really interact much with Chara much or knew much about them. Their first interaction was when Frisk freed themselves from Chara's control and realizes that Chara was the one behind everything.

Since Chara was the true culprit of everything in Dusttale, Sans helps Frisk get rid of them for good by sharing his determination with Frisk to delete Chara from existence and performing a reset to bring back everything to normal.

Up before the events of Dusttale, Sans relationship with Papyrus is largely the same as the one in Undertale.

Papyrus notices something is off when he cannot find Sans anywhere and gets worried, not even noticing that there was a human in front of them.

Some point after Papyrus' interaction with the human, he encounters Sans past their house only to get attacked by Sans. Papyrus is shaken and confused as to why Sans is trying to kill him, questioning his motives. Sans, distressed, tries to shift the blame of actions towards Frisk justifying his actions as preventive measure to stop them from killing everyone, needing the EXP from killing Papyrus. Papyrus does not agree with Sans reasoning, causing Sans to hurry up his killing of Papyrus as he believes what he is doing is better than what Frisk has planned for him. Papyrus begs for Sans to stop hurting him, before accepting his fate and allowing Sans to kill him if only if it would make him happy. This interaction causes Sans to mentally snap and become more violent and reckless.

Some short time later, Sans starts to hallucinate an apparition of Papyrus which confuses him at first, but quickly accepts his company. Upon Frisk (or Chara) killing Undyne, he is seemingly berated by the apparition as he failed to kill Undyne before them. Sans upset with this, tells him that he will find another way to get stronger. After Frisk attacks Sans during a break in their final fight, Papyrus apparently asks Sans to let him kill the human, which seemingly appears out of thin air and attacks Frisk. After a bit, Sans decides its his turn to fight the human again and Papyrus disappears.

Up before the events of Dusttale, Sans relationship with Toriel was largely the same as the one in Undertale up until before Frisk Falls.

At some point before Toriel finds Frisk, she opens the Ruins doors for Sans after he tricks her into letting him in due to a killer being on the loose in the Ruins. Toriel not wanting to any harm to be done to the monster of the ruins agrees with him and is left to do what he wants, presumably killing monsters before Frisk has the chance to.

When she checks in the area where Frisk first falls in, she gives her normal dialogue before being interrupted by a hostile sounding Sans, urging her to return to her home, possibly to prepare countermeasures against the killer.

Upon going into the basement, she asks Sans what the next phase of the plan to deal with the killer is, before she is betrayed by Sans, killing her with the Toy Knife that is usually found by Frisk. Toriel realizes that the person she used to tell jokes to was Sans, she calls him a killer, causing Sans to put on his hoodie hood for the rest of the run.

Alphys

Up before the events of Dusttale, Sans relationship with Toriel was largely the same as the one in Undertale up until the events of Dusttale.

Alphys has cameras hidden around the Underground, so it can be presumed that she discovered what Sans was doing and he knew that she was watching him as evidenced by the destroyed hidden cameras and destroyed the Lab. When Frisk opens up the elevator to the True Lab to find monsters to kill, Sans sneaks inside with them to kill Alphys for EXP.

Alphys being panicked at the thought of Sans getting to her, she devices a plan to kill Sans by using the DT (Determination) Extraction Machine. For unknown reasons, the machine fails to power up, which causes Alphys to beg Sans not kill her, which fails as Sans immediately kills her afterwards.

Not much is known about Sans relationship with Asgore prior to the events of Undertale, but during the events of Dusttale, he goes to demand the six souls from Asgore, to which he refuses, causing Sans to kill him in anger.

He at first justifies his actions, but later becomes mentally unstable[9] and treats what he is doing as nothing more than a "friendly" rivarly against Frisk, seeing himself as the "good" in a fight against evil[7]. Codex Statistics

Grade: S (More powerful than any other person or monster in the verse, only being beat by Frisk and Chara)

Tier: At least 9-C, Higher with Magic

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3-D

Power Source: Knife Usage & Magic

Attack Potency: At least Bone level (Could easily break a branch that was regarded as tough-looking and too heavy for the human to pick up[12]. Noted even in a pacifist route to be capable of killing the human[13]), Higher with Magic (Monsters enact in SOUL battles against humans due to humans in their physical forms being far stronger than monsters[14]). Can ignore conventional durability with attacks to the SOUL (As they are attacking the SOUL; which is the very culmination of one's being[15]), Higher with LOVE

Durability: At least Bone level, Lower if not wanting to FIGHT or cruel intentions (Monsters weaken when they don't want to fight[16] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[16]), Higher with LOVE (Sans[17] is able to take multiple hits without it mortally wounding him, not bothering to dodge anymore due to his increased defense[7])

Striking Strength: At least Bone Class

Lifting Strength: At leastAbove Average Human Class (Could easily break a branch that was regarded as tough-looking and too heavy for the human to pick up[18])

Travel Speed: Superhuman (Pedaled his tricycle so fast that he could keep up with Papyrus car), though ignores conventional traveling instead using Teleportation

Attack Speed: At least Transonic, likely Higher (Can tag Frisk, who can maneuver and dodge around the Greater Dog's barks, a sound based attack)

Reaction Speed: At least Transonic (Is shown to be one of the fastest characters of the Undertale cast as they can repeatedly dodge any attacks that the human throws at them, including attacks from the empty gun, an antique revolver, which have a muzzle velocity of up to 1,150 ft/s), likely Higher (He could effortlessly dodge the same thing while asleep, he was only caught off-guard due to battle mechanics in Undertale not usually warranting a second hit on the same turn)

Stamina: Peak Human (Sans is uncharacteristically active during his time during Dusttale, never falling asleep during his final battle, and only needing to take a small break to catch his breath around four minutes and forty five seconds of intense magic attacks)

Range: Range: Standard Melee physically (Uses the Toy Knife at one point to kill Toriel), Tens of Meters with Magic, Higher with Gaster Blasters, Kilometers with Teleportation (Has shown to be able to teleport throughout the underground and get to areas that are far ahead of where he originally was when talking to the human)

Intelligence: Supergenius (Is aware of the fact that the timeline has been reset repeatedly and that The Anomaly and the human are the cause of it. So aware of it to the point that he can tell from the look on one's face what they have done in a completely different timeline or an event that transpired in a different timeline, his suspicions are confirmed when he suddenly remembers 327 timeline resets[19])

Powers and Techniques

Notable Techniques

  • Red Mode: Sans uses a special move that causes the entire boundary of the soul turn red to obscure attacks.
  • Bone Attacks: Sans will send moving red bones, often differing in speed and direction which will remain as so for a couple of seconds before the view of the battle is obscured by a red overlay that hides the bones, causing damage to those who did not pay extra attention to the pattern of the bones. The Papyrus Apparation is also shown using the bone attack, but it is more of the same as Sans. This mode interestingly enough turns the soul black, being the only visible object during the attack.
  • Moving Restricted Boundary: When the attack is in effect, the SOUL must say inside the boundary or else get hurt.
  • Bone Attacks: In addition to having to move around to not get hurt by the outside of the box, Sans will send a barrage of bones to hurt the player. These attacks can be easily dodged as long as the boundary is more generous during these attacks and is much slower compared to the attack by itself.

Other

Standard Tactics: Sans avoids interacting with Frisk as long as they can in order to become more powerful than them[63], he kills monsters usually[4] by betraying them[9], confronting them[64] head-on[65], or even catching them off-guard while distracted fighting Frisk[66].

Weaknesses:

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[69] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[70].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[71] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[72].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[14] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[14]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[14].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[16]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[16] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[16]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[73].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[74].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[75].

Different Rules

Due to Dusttale operating under early Undertale fan theories and interpretations, the rules and characters of the world of Undertale do not apply to this verse and are completely separate from each other.

Chara Made Me Do It

The early Undertale fandom largely interpreted Chara as the mastermind behind Frisk's corruption into committing Genocide routes.

There is no basis for this normally as The Anomaly directly possesses Frisk and their actions directly influence[76] Chara.

In Dusttale, treats Frisk and Chara as characters whose actions are independent of the player, implicating Chara as the true villain who keeps resetting the timeline to continuously keep killing everyone to see if anything would change.

The Anomaly is Not You

In Undertale, the Anomaly is highly inferred to be the player controlling Frisk throughout their playthrough(s) of Undertale. This is first revealed through Sans the Skeleton's dialogue during his fight in the Genocide route[77]. The player has completely control of the game as they are able to reset timelines whenever they want, this is not the case in Dusttale.

Dusttale merges the Anomaly's role to both Frisk and Chara, with Frisk primarily being the "player" while Chara watched them do around nine genocide runs before taking control after Frisk's disinterest. Effectively combined, Chara sometimes takes control of Frisk when they deviate against Chara's goals.
