Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of The Cat’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

The CAT was created around 1961 as a costumed character for the Rat & Cat Theater. He was portrayed by a male actor who, along with the RAT and the Puppeteer, performed shows and played games with children.

One day in 1961, the RAT arrived at work drunk and invited a group of children to play hide-and-seek with him. Everyone except Mary Schmidt found a hiding spot. The RAT noticed Mary entering the Employees Only room and ran in after her, telling her he had seen her go inside. The Puppeteer entered and told RAT to remove his costume and go home because he had come to work drunk. When the Puppeteer tried to pull off RAT's mask, a fight broke out. RAT attempted to choke the Puppeteer, but the Puppeteer pushed him toward a table, causing the actor to fall and strike his head on the table's edge, killing him. The CAT came in to see this and told the Puppeteer they need to call the police and tell teh truth. However, when trying to call the Police, the Puppeteer choked him in his suit, then called the police and claimed he had found both of them dead.

Sometime later, the Rowboatics Corp. Factory opened and produced the RAT and CAT animatronics for the Rat & Cat Theater's reopening. However, the CAT animatronic was haunted by the dead actor and became extremely aggressive. A year later, at the theater's grand reopening, the RAT and CAT were performing for a crowd of children. During the show, Mary's brother approached The Rat, and The Rat injured him. Although the injury was not fatal, the Rat & Cat Theater was closed, and the employee operating the RAT was arrested despite being innocent. The RAT and CAT were sent back to the factory and used as the basis for newer designs.

The RAT also murdered a night guard in 1993, which caused the restaurant to shut down and the animatronics to be sent back to the factory.

CAT reactivated in 2007 after young Marylin Schmidt broke into the factory and stayed there for six nights. CAT was only active on Night 6 alongside the RAT, and the two were the only animatronics active for the entire night. After Night 6, the factory burned to the ground, leaving only rubble. It can be assumed that CAT and all the other animatronics were destroyed in the fire.

Appearance

General Description: The Cat is an animatronic with a cat-shaped head, differentiating him from the Rat. He shares the same dominant color as his counterpart.

Five Nights at Candy's 2 (Standard): Hollowed eyes, with the right eye bearing stitches. A stitch runs across his head, and he has the same joints as the Rat. He lacks a metallic skin or layer showing. Unlike his successors (Old Candy, Candy, and New Candy), he lacks whiskers. He has two to three metallic cubes on his arms. Unlike his monster counterpart, he has no fanged teeth. His endoskeleton fingers and feet are exposed.

The Cat (Withered): Appears similar to the Withered Rat, with the same dominant color and fallen into disrepair. He has hollowed eyes, with the right eye bearing stitches. A stitch runs across his head. He lacks a metallic skin or layer showing. He does not have many whiskers. He has a large hole torn in his chest. He has two to three metallic cubes on his arms. Unlike his monster counterpart, he has no fanged teeth. His endoskeleton fingers, left hand, and lower left leg are exposed, with parts of his upper left leg exposed. His body and head are damaged, though he seems less damaged than the Rat.

Personality

  • Kind to Children: Cat's Actor was mostly kind to the children, making sure to play hide and seek with any of them he saw.

  • Vicious: CAT constantly attacks whoever it sees, being compared to that of a bear attack with how badly he mauls Marylin Schmidt in the game over newspaper.

Goals

  • Kill the Marylin Schmidt (Failed).

Notable Techniques

Jumpscare

The Cat effectively sneak attacks Mary Schmidt or Marylin Schmidt depending on the game.

They quick attack which likely in-universe catches Mary or Marylin off guard before grabbing and killing them.

Other

Standard Tactics
The Cat is only active on Night 6 and Night 8 (labeled 7/20 in Nightmare Mode).

The Cat begins in an unknown location behind Withered Rat, but the room he starts in has no camera to view inside and does not appear on the floor plan.

The Cat functions like the other wandering animatronics. When he is seen on a camera or in the Central Hall, the sound of a phone moves him to the camera where the phone is located. The Cat can appear on the same camera as The Rat. The Cat can occasionally use the vents like Withered Chester to reach the Central Hall and kill Marylin Schmidt. Unlike Chester, if The Cat manages to enter the vents, he cannot be stalled with the cameras. If the maintenance panel is never opened and The Cat has entered the vents, he will perform his side jumpscare.

Weaknesses

Trivia

  • The name "CAT" parallels RAT from the first game, and the Extra menu names his withered version "The Cat," just as RAT's withered version is instead named "The Rat."
  • The Cat and The Rat are the only animatronics in the second game that can appear on the same camera at the same time.
  • Clicking the fourth star on the starting menu after completing 7/20 Nightmare sends the player to a minigame showing the Grand Reopening of Rat and Cat's Theater, featuring an unwithered The Cat and The Rat performing. This is most likely the very first establishment, existing sometime before 1965, when Old Candy and Blank were most likely first created judging by their minigame, but after 1962, when Rowboatics Corp. Factory first opened.
  • The Cat and The Rat are the opposite of a Tom and Jerry team, in that the cat and mouse are allied against a third party rather than opposing each other. However, Tom and Jerry have been shown to ally when another character tries to interrupt their dynamic.
  • Since Five Nights at Candy's 2 takes place in 2007 and Five Nights at Candy's 3 takes place in 1962, The Cat and The Rat are both 45 years old.
  • In Five Nights at Candy's 3, it is revealed that Rat and Cat are special design suits, just like the Fredbear and Spring Bonnie springlock suits.
  • There is a strong possibility that The Cat and The Rat are possessed by the actors who were inside the costumes when they were killed by the Puppeteer back in 1962.

If true, this would explain why they were active in Five Nights at Candy's 1 and 2: they wanted revenge on the Puppeteer, who now possesses Vinnie, for murdering them decades earlier.

  • In the room where the Rat and Cat are killed, there is a desk with papers on it. If the player interacts with it, Mary reads the papers, which are scripts for the show scheduled for that same day and state that the Rat and the Cat's names will be revealed.

While Rat's name is never mentioned, the Cat's name is revealed to be Candy the Cat. By extension, this reveals that the Cat is in fact Candy.

  • The Cat and The Rat are the only animatronics confirmed to actually kill the player, as the death screen after being jumpscared by them shows a news clipping reporting that Marylin Schmidt was found brutally murdered, whereas when the other animatronics jumpscare the player, the news clipping only mentions her mysterious disappearance.
  • When viewing The Cat and The Rat in the Extra Menu, the music turns into an ominous trombone tune. This is actually the normal extras menu music, slowed down.
  • The Cat and The Rat are not springlock animatronics, as confirmed by Emil Macko on Twitter.
  • Despite being just as withered, The Cat is less damaged than The Rat.
  • Despite being scared by phones when banging on a vent, The Cat is also lured by said phones.

Misconceptions

The Rat and Cat Suits are Spring-Animatronics

This is believed to be the case due to trying to parallel The Rat and Cat to Spring Bonnie and Fredbear, however this has been debunked by Emil Macko himself[19].
