The Rat
The Rat, also known simply as RAT, is the main antagonist of the Five Nights at Candy's series. He serves as the primary antagonist in Five Nights at Candy's, Five Nights at Candy's 2, and Five Nights at Candy's Remastered, and as the overarching antagonist of Five Nights at Candy's 3.
He is unique in that he only becomes active during the final few nights. In the cutscene after Night 6, he appears to get up and do something. He is possessed by the soul of the actor who played Rat at the Rat and Cat Theater.
While The Rat does not appear in the main gameplay of Five Nights at Candy's 3, he is featured in the Night 1, Night 3, and Night 5 cutscenes. During gameplay, he is replaced by Monster Rat and Shadow Rat.
As revealed in Five Nights at Candy's 3, the two were originally suits worn by performers. RAT orchestrated the murder of the twins at the Rowboatics Corp. factory and played a role in the closure of Candy's Burgers & Fries in 1993.
The real name of RAT's actor is never revealed, whether referring to the cartoon character of RAT or the ghost possessing the robot. In Five Nights at Candy's 3, the actor's name is displayed as "#####," suggesting it is likely five letters long.

The RAT was created around 1961 as a costumed character for the Rat & Cat Theater. He was portrayed by a male actor who, along with the CAT and the Puppeteer, performed shows and played games with children. One day in 1961, the RAT arrived at work drunk and invited a group of children to play hide-and-seek with him. Everyone except Mary Schmidt found a hiding spot. The RAT noticed Mary entering the Employees Only room and ran in after her, telling her he had seen her go inside. The Puppeteer entered and told RAT to remove his costume and go home because he had come to work drunk. When the Puppeteer tried to pull off RAT's mask, a fight broke out. RAT attempted to choke the Puppeteer, but the Puppeteer pushed him toward a table, causing the actor to fall and strike his head on the table's edge, killing him. After the CAT entered and tried to call the police, the Puppeteer murdered him as well, then called the police and claimed he had found both of them dead. Sometime later, the Rowboatics Corp. Factory opened and produced the RAT and CAT animatronics for the Rat & Cat Theater's reopening. However, the RAT animatronic was haunted by the dead actor and became extremely aggressive. A year later, at the theater's grand reopening, the RAT and CAT were performing for a crowd of children. During the show, Mary's brother approached The Rat, and The Rat injured him. Although the injury was not fatal, the Rat & Cat Theater was closed, and the employee operating the RAT was arrested despite being innocent. The RAT and CAT were sent back to the factory and used as the basis for newer designs. In 1964, after Old Candy and Blank were created, The RAT was placed next to them on a conveyor belt. He then activated and began wandering the factory, attacking the security camera watching him. The RAT eventually ended up at Candy's Burgers and Fries, though it is unknown whether he was sent there for spare parts or snuck in with the other animatronics. He was placed in a backroom and remained unused for the rest of the restaurant's operation. One night in 1989, Chester found a key to his room and went to unlock it. The RAT presumably attacked and dismembered him, leading to Chester being decommissioned. The RAT also murdered a night guard in 1993, which caused the restaurant to shut down and the animatronics to be sent back to the factory. RAT reactivated in 2007 after young Marylin Schmidt broke into the factory and stayed there for six nights. RAT was only active on Night 6 alongside the CAT, and the two were the only animatronics active for the entire night. After Night 6, the factory burned to the ground, leaving only rubble. It can be assumed that RAT and all the other animatronics were destroyed in the fire. |
Appearance
General Description: The Rat is a withered, eyeless rat animatronic with a faded brown color.
Five Nights at Candy's / Remastered: A torn cloth covering. A seam runs down the middle of the head. Brownish, broken buckteeth. His left ear is broken. His hands and feet are exposed. In the Remastered version, an abundance of wires was added throughout his body, most notably visible on his hands. The pegs sticking out of his suit were changed from square-shaped to round.
Five Nights at Candy's 2: Even more withered than in the first game. His right forearm exoskeleton is missing, and his lower leg exoskeletons are almost completely missing.
Five Nights at Candy's 3: Appears in the minigames as Costume Rat. In the main gameplay, he is replaced by Monster Rat.
Alternate Forms: His appearance varies across the Five Nights at Candy's series. Costume Rat and Monster Rat are considered alternate forms as Monster Rat is a manifestation of Mary Schmidt's guilt.
Personality
- Kind to Children: Rat's Actor was mostly kind to the children, with the only known exception being toward a boy who mentioned The Rat was angry when he complained about the state of the theater's games.
- Alcoholic: Rat's Actor is an alcoholic, as revealed in FNaC 3's Night 5 Cutscene.
- Egotistical: Rat's Actor has quite an ego, angrily mocking The Puppeteer and stating that he has talent and The Puppeteer does not. It is unknown if this was due to the influence of alcohol.
- Depressed: He is implied to be the one crying in the backroom in Night 4, as the Cat was definitively outside the backroom and the Puppeteer was not normally that early to work.
- Vicious: RAT constantly attacks whoever it sees, being compared to that of a bear attack with how badly he mauls Marylin Schmidt in the game over newspaper. Just from Chester walking into his room he dismantled him.

| “ | Hey, how’s it going? *slurps* Oh, sorry. I have a latte here. Uh, anyway, I uh, I have one last thing to tell you, um… Alright. You’ve probably noticed, uh, that there is an extra door in the second party room, uh, which is on Camera 9, I think. *coughs* Uh,it’s…it’s not on the map, that’s because it’s..it’s really nothing special. It’s..it’s like a storage room, uh…we don’t go in there much. Like, I..I haven’t even been in there myself, you know. I… just wanted to inform you that you don’t need to worry about it, and that’s it’s not a mistake that it’s not on the map or anything like that.
Uh, anyway, you’ve done a great job so far. Uhh, I’ll talk to you next week. Uh, goodnight. |

| ~ Night 5 Phone Call Alluding to The Rat in the Original Version |
| “ | Hello again. So, the big boss man told me to inform you about our off-limit areas. Uh, I know that sounds kind of silly, since you're supposed to be guarding the place, but the manager is adamant that we don't go where we're not supposed to be. He's mostly talking about the rooms that aren't on your little uh, mini-map. They aren't on the map because it apparently isn't any of your business. Or ours, for that sake. Like that extra room, next to the Parts and Service room. I believe you can see the door from camera 9. (Ah yes, thank you. Here, keep the change.) *sip* Excuse the sound of my delicious latte. Uh, anyway, the manager says it's just a storage room, but I've of course heard many stories from my superstitious colleagues... So, it's either an extra kitchen, a staircase to a secret underground tunnel, or it's where he puts his bowling equipment because he doesn't want his wife to know he's still bowling. Of course I don't believe it's anything special, to be honest. I overheard him talking about the room once... He mentioned something about some 'old unused stuff.' Maybe he's hiding his smile in there. Who knows.
(Yeah yeah yeah sweetie, I'll hang up now.) Haha anyway, I am all out of time! See you next week. |

| ~ Night 5 Phone Call Alluding to The Rat in the Remastered Version |
The Rat becomes active on Night 5 starting at 4 AM, though he will most likely not reach the office. On Night 6, he begins attacking officially. He exits through the door at the back of CAM 9 and can enter through either the Right or Left Door. If he reaches the security office, he jumpscares Mary Schmidt and ends the game. The Rat is extremely active and can appear at the door as early as 12 AM.
In the original Five Nights at Candy's The Rat would make a sound similar to a glitch or electrical spark, which signals his presence at the door. This sound cue is completely absent in the remastered version.
Withered Rat, along with Withered Cat, are only active on Night 6 and Night 8, while the other animatronics remain completely inactive for unknown reasons. Withered Rat tries to reach the player through the hallway, like the other standard animatronics. Occasionally, his face will cover an entire camera. If the camera is not switched quickly enough or put down in time, the camera will be temporarily disabled. This is very similar to Withered Penguin, except that when the screen glitches out, the Windows-based error pop-up displays a string of numbers ("726576656e6765") instead of the normal error text that translates to "yourdeathmyrevenge." The OK button still functions, allowing the player to continue once the camera application restarts.
Weaknesses
- Standard Animatronic Weaknesses: If it hits 6 AM, the animatronic no longer targets and resorts to its daytime functions[18]. They can be lured away by the sound of phone calls[15].
- Unique Weaknesses: His human self was an alcoholic.
Trivia
- In FNaC 1, unlike every other animatronic, The Rat's Custom Night icon is completely distorted, and his name flickers randomly. This is not the case in the remaster.
- Much like Springtrap in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 and Freddy Fazbear in Five Nights at Freddy's 1, The Rat tries to stay hidden from the cameras, making him harder to track.
- The Rat may have been based on a suggestion for a Springtrap-like character named "Mousetrap" on an official announcement page.
- The Rat, along with The Cat, is most likely inspired by the popular 1950s American TV show Tom and Jerry. This is evidenced by the Rat and Cat duo resembling the show's mouse and cat pairing, as well as the broader inclusion of Tom and Jerry and its music, composed by Scott Bradley, throughout the franchise.
- In the original FNaC, the final frame of The Rat's jumpscare can be inverted to reveal that he has human eyes, similar to Springtrap.
- This detail is absent in the remaster.
- During the late hours of Night 5, The Rat can be seen coming from the door in CAM 09, even though he is not very active at that time. On very rare occasions, he can even attack the player on this night.
- The Rat has his own unique jumpscare sound. In FNaC 2, this sound is shared with The Cat.
- The Rat's shadow can occasionally appear over the paycheck, replacing Candy's shadow, which is usually the one seen there.
- In the Night 6 cutscene, the timestamp reads "64" rather than "87" as in the other cutscenes. This means The Rat is at least three years old at the time of the cutscene, which explains his slightly withered appearance.
- The Rat is 26 years old during the events of FNaC 1.
- In FNaC 2, it is indicated that The Rat is 46 years old.
- In FNaC 3, he is only 1 year old, as that game takes place in 1962 and The Rat was built in 1961.
- The Rat is 26 years old during the events of FNaC 1.
- After completing Night 6, another clip of security footage from The Factory is shown. The footage depicts Old Candy, The Rat, and Blank sitting on a conveyor belt. After a few seconds, The Rat moves slightly, eventually stands up, walks away from the camera, and then reappears with his face directly in front of the camera, staring at the player. In FNaC: Remastered, he destroys the camera instead, which reboots in the Night 5 ending after Vinnie destroys it upon showing the player some text on the screen.
- In the Extras menu, the music stops when the player is viewing The Rat's extras page titled "RAT."
- In Five Nights at Candy's 3, it is revealed that The Rat and The Cat were originally costumes that were later converted into animatronics, similar to the Fredbear and Spring Bonnie springlock suits from the FNaF series.
- As revealed in FNaC 3, The Rat is the one who murdered the pair of twins inside Rowboatics Corp. Factory.
- In the original FNaC 1, if the player remains on Rat's extra page for too long, he will look at the player and begin walking ominously toward the screen, then stare at the player while his head twitches violently.
- In FNaC: Remastered, if the player zooms into Rat's face and stares at him long enough in the extras, his head will twitch constantly while numbers 0 through 20 are displayed. After the numbers fade, Rat will stare at the player while subtly twitching, showing CAM-13. After the text fades, Rat stops twitching and the extras music resumes. The player must then go to Custom Night and input the exact numbers in the exact order they appeared, then start the night.
- Though he was named "RAT" in the first game, the Extra menu in the second game names him "The Rat." The reason for this is unknown.
- He and The Cat are the only animatronics in the second game that can appear in the same room at the same time.
- When viewing The Rat and The Cat in the Extra Menu of the second game, the music changes into an ominous trombone tune. This is actually the normal extras menu music, albeit slowed down.
- In the bonus minigame, he is speculated to have played a role in the restaurant's first murder. This may explain why he had been retired by the time of the first game.
- He is also hinted at in the minigames to have played a role in the destruction of Chester and in the murder of a security guard, leaving the blame to fall on New Candy.
- Alongside The Cat, The Rat might be an equivalent to Shadow Freddy and RWQFSFASXC. Both are the only two with the same design interpretation and act as secret animatronics. The Cat could correspond to Shadow Freddy, being based on Candy while Shadow Freddy is based on Freddy, while The Rat could be an equivalent to RWQFSFASXC.
- In FNaC 3's Night 5 Cutscene section, Mary can inspect a trash bin in the employees' room and find two crumpled drawings inside, both about being best friends with Vinnie and The Cat. There are no signs of a Rat drawing in the bin, potentially implying that he keeps the drawings he receives from children.
- In the second game, when The Penguin disables the monitor, a box pops up prompting the player to restart SaSS.exe. When The Rat disables the monitor, however, the text consists of strings of symbols, with the only legible word being the "Restart" button.
- Despite the similarities between The Rat, Springtrap, and Freddy Fazbear, the three antagonists are quite different. While Springtrap remains slow and easy to predict, The Rat and Freddy Fazbear are very aggressive. The potential for Rat's jumpscare is extremely high, as demonstrated in the Night 6 cutscene during the first game. On the other hand, while Freddy Fazbear can enter from both doors, he only uses the right door when the power is on and the left door when the power is out.
- The Rat is the only enemy in FNaC that is not playable in any of the FNaC 2 minigames.
