Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Mary’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

She appears as a playable character in the cutscene featured on Night 6, where the player controls a younger version of her during the Grand Reopening of Rat & Cat's Theater, prior to the events of Five Nights at Candy's 3. In this scene, she enters the stage room and sees a crowd of happy children and adults watching The Rat and The Cat, in their non-withered condition, performing on stage. Mary's brother approaches the edge of the stage, and The Rat slowly bends down and reaches out toward the boy, horrifying the crowd.

In a secret minigame unlocked after completing "Fishing with Candy," the player controls Mary before the events of Five Nights at Candy's. She visits the 1987 location of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where she sees the Puppet, which reminds her of Vinnie. Mary then begins experiencing hallucinations of Vinnie blended with the Puppet's appearance.

Mary returns as the main protagonist of Five Nights at Candy's 3, now as a child undergoing therapy and gradually recalling the murder she witnessed, which has traumatized her. She tries to survive her hallucinations at night, while the timeline of the incident is revealed through cutscenes after each night is completed.

In the cutscenes that play after Nights 1 and 3, Mary plays hide-and-seek with The Rat actor before the show and is discovered hiding either in a closet or under a table. In the cutscenes after Nights 2 and 4, The Cat actor invites her to play hide-and-seek instead. On Night 5, The Rat is about to begin a game of hide-and-seek with a large group of children, and Mary decides to join. She searches for a hiding spot, but all of her usual places are already taken. The "Staff Only" room, which had been inaccessible before, is now open, and The Cat is seen running out of it. Mary enters the room and hides inside the closet.

After Mary hides, The Rat enters the room, saying he saw her go in and intends to find her. From inside the closet, Mary witnesses The Puppeteer confronting The Rat for being drunk during work hours. The Puppeteer tells him to think about what would happen if the parents discovered a performer was drunk and urges him to "Think of our careers! Think of the children!" The Rat takes offense at the mention of the children, shouting that they love him and accusing The Puppeteer of being jealous that he is more talented. The Puppeteer orders The Rat to remove his costume and go home, but The Rat refuses. The Puppeteer then tries to pry off The Rat's mask. The Rat fights back and grabs The Puppeteer's neck, but is shoved away and strikes the back of his neck on the sharp edge of Vinnie's bench, dying instantly.

The Cat enters the room and asks what happened. The Puppeteer claims it was an accident. The Cat insists they call an ambulance and the police, but The Puppeteer refuses, wanting instead to lie to the authorities by saying The Rat had always been unstable and was found that way. The Cat assures him it was an honest mistake and that they must tell the truth. As The Cat goes to the telephone to contact the authorities, The Puppeteer sneaks up behind him and strangles him to death. The Puppeteer then calls the police, claims he found both of his co-workers dead, takes his diploma, and leaves the room while Mary remains hidden in the closet.

As the Truth Ending fades in, a doctor's report on Mary's case is displayed, stating that the police should be notified of the new information and that the case should be reopened.

After the events of Night 5, Mary emerges from her hiding spot and makes her way to the restaurant's entrance. A police officer at the scene tries to comfort her while she cries, but she spots her father, runs to him, and hugs him, apologizing for having gone inside. The cutscene ends with a note from a psychologist.

Relationships

Mary's Dad

While Mary's brother is out at camp, Mary's dad brings her to the Rat & Cat Theater.

He mostly stays in the background and lets her have her fun.

However, when the incident happens he tries to fight his way back into the building as he can't find his daughter, when she comes out he consoles her as she is breaking down crying.

It's revealed during the Pre-Night 1 Dreamscape that the Cassette Tape Player Mary is using in her dreams was made by her dad as a way to fight against the nightmares and let her have a peaceful sleep.

The Rat & The Cat

Mary meets with The Rat and The Cat during each theater day, with them wanting to play hide & seek with her. They find her each time no matter where she hides.

During the last big hide and seek with The Rat all the kids take Mary's hiding spots so she goes into the backroom to hide where she witnesses the murder of The Rat & The Cat by Vinnie.

Blaming herself for it, she visualizes the Rat and Cat as monsters in her nightmare trying to attack her.

After some therapy she learns and accepts that it isn't her fault and makes her way to a near complete recovery.

Vinnie

While unknown if it is a hallucination or actually Vinnie in the beginning, he continuously blames her for what happened that night[2].

He initially had no relation to her other then saying hello to her at the theater.

However, when the incident happened and Mary was the only one to witness it and report it to the police, he blames her for why he has been locked behind bars.

He attempts to face against her in the true final night but loses[3].

Weaknesses

Explanations

Dreamscape

The dreamscape[9] is an area where one is somewhat dreaming[9]. One can communicate with one in the dreamscape from the deepscape and vice versa. To truly dream, Mary goes to sleep within the dreamscape to face off against the nightmares[9]. The room in the Dreamscape gets more and more filled the more Mary remembers[16].

Deepscape

The Deepscape is a place where Mary's deepest memories are[9]. It comprises of glowing particles that make up a path so that Mary can safely travel[9] as traversing off the path is where the shadows will get her[9]. The Deepscape's design changes with each night, where later nights the Monster Cat spawns where it causes a timer to count down whenever Mary steps off the path[16]. When Mary becomes familiar with the unfamiliar, the deepscape has dream trees grow which serve as guides to let Mary know where she is[16].

Trivia

Misconceptions

While many people claim Mary Schmidt's brother to be Mike Schmidt or that her husband is Mike Schmidt, the protagonist of the first Five Nights at Freddy's, there has never been confirmed a relation between the two.

From what's seen, her husband is unnamed and her brother is never depicted to be Mike Schmidt.
