Palkia

From The Codex
Pokémon/Palkia
Jump to navigationJump to search

Palkia is a dual-type Water/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, but it can transform into its Origin Forme when holding the Lustrous Globe.

Along with Dialga and Giratina, Palkia is one of the Pokémon of myth created by Arceus, representing space. In the past, it was worshiped by the Pearl Clan under the name almighty Sinnoh. Palkia serves as the game mascot for Pokémon Pearl Version and its remake, Pokémon Shining Pearl, appearing on the box art of both games in its normal form.

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Palkia’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

According to the myths and legends of the Hisui and Sinnoh regions, at the beginning of existence, the Mythical Pokémon Arceus created eggs from which the Pokémon of space—Palkia—the Pokémon of time—Dialga—and the Pokémon of antimatter—Giratina—hatched, all in their Origin Formes. Arceus also created the lake guardians and tasked them with calming Dialga or Palkia whenever they became enraged. After the Pokémon universe was formed, Palkia withdrew into its own dimension, which is said to be shredded as if torn to ribbons. It was both revered and feared as a deity in the past and was worshiped by the Pearl Clan, who mistook it for Arceus and called it "almighty Sinnoh." Palkia can communicate in human language through telepathy, as demonstrated when it speaks through the Pearl Clan's leader, Irida. Palkia and Dialga may also be driven into a frenzy by powerful space-time distortions created by Giratina. They can control and spread these distortions, which results in the appearance of alpha Pokémon and causes noble Pokémon to become frenzied through lightning bolts emitted from them.

Palkia has power over space—it can warp space and travel to faraway places, alternate dimensions, and parallel timelines. It can also rend its targets along with the space around them. It has the ability to destroy and create an entire universe, either alone or with Dialga's help. As shown in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Palkia can open and close dimensional portals to alternate universes. It is said that Palkia's birth caused the walls of the world to disappear, creating a sky that spans infinity, and that space becomes more stable with its every breath. Palkia usually travels by levitating. Because it primarily resides in another dimension, its behavior is nearly impossible to study. In the anime, Palkia is very protective of its home, leading to violent conflicts with Dialga when their dimensions intersect. Palkia can travel by creating a large yellow sphere from its two pearls and using it to fly at great speed, as seen in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.

Palkia is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Spacial Rend.

Name Meaning

The name Palkia may be derived from the Japanese word パール (pāru), meaning "pearl," along with "galaxia," which relates to galaxies or space. Another possible element is the Japanese word 海 (kai), meaning "sea" or "ocean," which ties into the theme of liquid matter shared by its counterparts.

Appearance

General Description: Palkia is a light-purple, theropod-like Pokémon with stripes and markings of a darker shade and gray underarms and waist.

Physical Features: Round purple-striped plates on its shoulder area, where two pink pearl-like crystals lie encrusted with a gray rim encircling them. Fin-like wings on its back. Arms with extended formations resembling gauntlets and a purple band around each wrist. A long neck that is normally bent. A pointed white crest on the top of its head that extends to its wings. Two strong horn-like tusks on the sides of its jaw. A powerful tail. Faint cracks along its legs and tail.

Goals

  • Maintain Space (Ongoing).

Status Effects

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of Pokémon

Status Effects
Name Effect Apperances
Burned Reduces one's physical attack and takes damage overtime from the burns. Usually caused by Fire type moves and generally lasts indefinitely unless an external item, ability like shed skin, or move like rest is used. In Generation 1, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. In Generation 2, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/8 of its maximum health. In Generation 8 onward, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. Burn status can be caused by the following moves: Beak Blast (if a Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move during the move's charging phase), Blaze Kick, Blazing Torque, Blue Flare, Burning Bulwark (If contact is made with the user of the move), Burning Jealously (If the Pokémon has increased stats during that turn), Ember, Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Fire Punch, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Fling (if holding a Flame Orb), Heat Wave, Ice Burn, Infernal Parade, Inferno, Matcha Gotcha, Lava Plume, Psycho Shift (If the user of the move is already inflicted with the burn status), Pyro Ball, Sacred Fire, Sandsear Storm, Scald, Scorching Sands, Searing Shot, Secret Power (when used on a volcano), Shadow Fire, Sizzly Slide, Steam Eruption, Tri Attack, and Will-O-Wisp. Most Pokémon Games
Freeze Prevents any action in battle. Usually caused by Ice type moves and generally only lasts for multiple turns, they can be thawed out early if hit by a fire move. The thaw out chance ranges from generation, in Generation 2 the thaw out chance is a 25/256 chance. In Generation 3, the thaw out chance is 20% each turn. In Pokémon Champions, the thaw out chance is 25% each turn. In Generation 1, a frozen Pokémon cannot break out unless hit by a fire-type move that can inflict burn or if an opponent uses the move Haze. Frozen status can be caused by the moves: Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Freezing Glare, Ice Beam, Ice Fang, Ice Punch, Powder Snow, Secret Power (when used in snow or ice weather), Shadow Chill, or Tri Attack. Most Pokémon Games
Frostbite In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the freeze status conditions is replcaaed with frostbite. Frostbite has the Pokémon lose 1/16 of their maximum health every turn and reduces damage dealt by a frostbitten Pokémon's special moves. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Paralysis Has a chance of preventing any action in battle and lowers speed stat. Usually caused by Electric type skills, it lasts indefinitely without external help, any ability like shed skin, or a move like rest. In later games, attacking a shocked enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Paralysis in general has a 25% chance of having a Pokémon be unable to attack asides from Pokémon Champions. In Generation 1, paralysis reduces a Pokemon's speed by 75% rounded down due to a stats modification glitch (along with this, using moves like agility would return the dropped speed to normal and double it and the speed drop would stay even after being cured of Paralysis using an item or through Rest). Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. In Generation 1 a poisoned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of their maximum health at the end of every turn. A badly poisoned Pokémon still takes 1/16 of their maximum health at first, however the damage increases by 1/16 each time it takes poison damage. In Generation 2, the damage is lowered to 1/8 of its maximum damage and poison damage taken by a badly poisoned Pokémon doesn't interact with other types of recurrent damage. From Generation 1 to 4 all poisoned Pokémon in a trainer's party loses 1 HP for every four steps taken (in FireRed and LeafGreen it's instead every five steps). In Generation 1 to 3, the poison Pokémon will take poison damage until they faint. In Generation 4, a poisoned Pokémon's HP will be brought to 1 and then they will cure themself of poison. In Generation 5 to 8 poisoned Pokémon no longer take poison damage outside of battle. In Legends: Z-A, poisoned Pokémon take damage whil it is outside its Poké Ball. The moves that inflict poison are as follows: Baneful Bunker (If Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move), Barb Barrage, Cross Poison, Dire Claw, Fling (if holding Poison Barb), G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Malodor, G-Max Stun Shock, Gunk Shot, Mortal Spin, Noxious Toruqe, Poison Gas, Poison Jab, Poison Powder, Poison Sting, Poison Tail, Psychco Shift (if the user of the move is poisoned), Secret Power (When used in tall grass), Shell Side Arm, Sludge, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Smog, Toxic Spikes, Toxic Thread, and twineedle. Most Pokémon Games
Confusion Confused Pokémon become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy or attack themself. In Generations 1-6 it was a 50% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Generation 7 and onwards, it was a 33% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Legends: Z-A, confusion causes the Pokémon to move sporadically. Trivia

  • Palkia is the only Pokémon that causes an Arceus equipped with the Legend Plate to become Dragon-type when using Judgment. This is because Palkia's type permutation is the only one that can result in a Dragon-type Judgment, and Palkia is the only Pokémon with this permutation in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
  • Palkia's gender differs across various Pokémon media. It is gender unknown in the core series games, male in the story of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness (though still gender unknown for gameplay purposes), and female in the Russian dub of the animated series.
  • In games prior to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Palkia has a catch rate of 30.
  • Origin Forme Palkia is the heaviest Water-type Pokémon.
  • Palkia and Dialga are the only two Pokémon that can be legitimately caught in every kind of Poké Ball in the core series to date, excluding the Park Ball, which cannot be registered as any Pokémon's Poké Ball. This is because they are the only two Pokémon that can be caught with the Origin Ball.
  • The gems on Palkia's shoulders resemble Pale Spheres.
  • Palkia is in the highest IQ group, occupying IQ group J, and is the only Pokémon in that group.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Palkia, along with Primal Dialga, the legendary giants, the Magnemite family, and Regigigas, speaks entirely in capital letters, unlike other Pokémon in the game.
  • Although the portal to Palkia's world appears in core series games, the interior of that world has only been shown in the animated series.
  • At the end of one of Palkia's roars from the animated series and movies, a roar from Mecha-King Ghidorah, a kaiju from the 1991 Toho film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, can be heard.
  • Palkia and Dialga were designed by Ken Sugimori.
  • Palkia was featured as a card caddy in the 2008 Burger King promotional Pokémon toys.
  • Palkia was featured as a promotional toy in the 2018 McDonald's promotional Pokémon toys.
  • Palkia, along with Dialga, may be based on the Shinto legend of Izanami and Izanagi, who are said to have created one island with a spear, erected a pillar upon it, and from there created the islands of Japan. In terms of appearance, Palkia is likely based on a European dragon combined with a pearl. Its design may also draw from the Plateosaurus or other bipedal dinosaurs such as the Oviraptor. The plates covering its face and the crest on its neck together resemble helmets worn by soldiers in Ancient Greece and Rome, a resemblance made even more apparent in its Origin Forme.
  • Its Water type is possibly inspired by its association with pearls, or by the vast expanses that oceans span. Metaphorically, it could reference the ever-changing forms of physical matter in the universe, with energy and matter flowing between states and shifting forms. It could also refer to Ancient Greek astronomy, which depicted Earth as submerged in water. The Water type might also represent the liquid state of matter, whereas Dialga's Steel type represents the solid state and Giratina's Ghost type represents the gaseous state.
  • Palkia's Origin Forme appears to be based on Arceus. It bears similarities to a centaur and to the winged horse Pegasus from Greek mythology. Since Arceus seems to take inspiration from the qilin, this influence is also visible in Origin Forme Palkia through its mix of equine and draconic qualities, including Palkia's Dragon typing.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus
It soars across the sky in a form that greatly resembles the creator of all things. Perhaps this imitation of appearance is Palkia’s strategy for gaining Arceus’s powers.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't Palkia get 2-C, 2-B, or 2-A as Cyrus was going to use Palkia and Dialga to bring about the destruction of all things[8], which would've affected all of reality?

A: It is shown in Team Rainbow Rocket's DLC that Cyrus succeeded in his timeline with his goal[35] and it only sent him to another world[35]. Rainbow Rocket's existence would imply there's timelines where Cyrus succeeds with his goal yet reality is fine. on top of this, he was using Dialga and Palkia's manipulation of space-time.
