Giratina

From The Codex
Pokémon/Giratina
Jump to navigationJump to search

Giratina is a dual-type Ghost/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, but it can transform from its Altered Forme into its Origin Forme when holding the Griseous Orb in Generations IV through VIII, the Griseous Core from Generation VIII onward, or while residing in its home dimension, the Distortion World.

Along with Dialga and Palkia, Giratina is one of the Pokémon of myth created by Arceus, representing antimatter. It serves as the game mascot for Pokémon Platinum Version, appearing on the box art in its Origin Forme, which was officially revealed in early February 2008. Giratina is also the final Pokémon listed in the Sinnoh Pokédex in that game.

Background

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Giratina’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

According to the myths and legends of the Hisui and Sinnoh regions, at the beginning of existence, the Mythical Pokémon Arceus created eggs from which the Pokémon of antimatter: Giratina, the Pokémon of time: Dialga, and the Pokémon of space: Palkia hatched, all three originally appearing in their Origin Formes. After the Pokémon universe was formed, Giratina's violent nature led Arceus to banish it to the Distortion World, a realm that exists on the reverse side of the Pokémon world. It developed a deep grudge against its creator and later opposed Arceus alongside Volo. However, after being defeated by a human from another time, Giratina eventually changed its ways and began protecting the universe from threats such as Cyrus, whose ambitions resembled Volo's. In Pokémon the Series, Giratina is depicted as residing in the Reverse World, a dimension similar to the Distortion World. Damage caused in the Reverse World is reflected in the Pokémon world, and by repairing the former, Giratina can also repair the latter.

Giratina is highly aggressive and territorial, traits that likely contributed to its banishment. It has been reported to appear in ancient cemeteries and is known by many titles, including "the banished Pokémon," "Arceus's shadow," "the Pokémon of Shadows," and "the being on the other side of our world." It is said to have silently observed the real world from its home dimension. Giratina possesses immense power over reality and dimensions, able to tear holes in reality, create space-time rifts, and even drive both Dialga and Palkia into a frenzy. These rifts can spread smaller space-time distortions throughout a region, creating alpha Pokémon and releasing lightning capable of sending noble Pokémon into a frenzy. Giratina can also cloak itself in darkness as it attacks and is considered equal in strength to Dialga and Palkia.

Giratina is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Shadow Force by leveling up.

Name Meaning

The name Giratina may be derived from platina, the Spanish word for "platinum," combined with a corruption of "Gila monster," a species of venomous lizard. It may also involve the words "guilty," "guillotine," the Japanese onomatopoeia ギラリ (girari), which describes a glaring look, and "girasol," a variety of opal.

Appearance

General Description: Giratina is a large gray draconic Pokémon with three gold half-rings on each side of its long neck. Its head bears a gold crown-like structure with two large horns extending from it. A thick black stripe runs vertically along the front of its body and is marked with five red horizontal stripes. It has a tail with two band-like markings and six gold half-rings that are prominent features of both of its forms.

Altered Forme: Two large black ghostly wings, each tipped with three red protrusions resembling claws. These wings can change shape as though composed of liquid or gas. Six thick legs ending in golden claws, with two gold half-circles on each side of every leg resembling shackles. Giratina generally remains in this form while outside of its home dimension. It usually moves by levitating rather than walking on its six legs.

Origin Forme: Said to be its true form. Has a serpentine appearance. Its legs are reduced to golden-tipped spikes, while four additional golden spikes appear near the end of its tail. The six gold half-rings become functional appendages capable of gripping objects, and from the back of each extends a black ghostly tendril tipped with a red spike. Its horns point backward, and the sides of its golden crown cover its mouth, separating vertically like an insect's mandibles when it opens them. The black stripe running down its body is broken into separate segments. Giratina is always levitating in this form and can pass through dimensions at will.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: Altered Forme and Origin Forme are the two forms of Giratina.

Griseous Orb

  • Description: The Griseous Orb (Japanese: はっきんだま Platinum Orb) is a type of held item introduced in Pokémon Platinum. It is one of the orbs associated with the Pokémon of myth.
  • Usage: Used as a held item. From Generation IV to VIII, the Griseous Orb allows Giratina to remain in its Origin Forme outside of the Distortion World.
  • Function: If held by Giratina, it increases the power of its Dragon- and Ghost-type moves by 20%. Pokémon that transform into Giratina do not receive the power boost. Unaffected by item negating effects (such as Embargo and Klutz). Item manipulating effects (such as Trick and Fling) cannot give Giratina a Griseous Orb or remove a Griseous Orb from Giratina. In Generation IX, the Griseous Orb is now affected by item manipulating and negating effects due to no longer causing Giratina to change form.

Status Effects

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of Pokémon

Status Effects
Name Effect Apperances
Burned Reduces one's physical attack and takes damage overtime from the burns. Usually caused by Fire type moves and generally lasts indefinitely unless an external item, ability like shed skin, or move like rest is used. In Generation 1, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. In Generation 2, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/8 of its maximum health. In Generation 8 onward, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. Burn status can be caused by the following moves: Beak Blast (if a Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move during the move's charging phase), Blaze Kick, Blazing Torque, Blue Flare, Burning Bulwark (If contact is made with the user of the move), Burning Jealously (If the Pokémon has increased stats during that turn), Ember, Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Fire Punch, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Fling (if holding a Flame Orb), Heat Wave, Ice Burn, Infernal Parade, Inferno, Matcha Gotcha, Lava Plume, Psycho Shift (If the user of the move is already inflicted with the burn status), Pyro Ball, Sacred Fire, Sandsear Storm, Scald, Scorching Sands, Searing Shot, Secret Power (when used on a volcano), Shadow Fire, Sizzly Slide, Steam Eruption, Tri Attack, and Will-O-Wisp. Most Pokémon Games
Freeze Prevents any action in battle. Usually caused by Ice type moves and generally only lasts for multiple turns, they can be thawed out early if hit by a fire move. The thaw out chance ranges from generation, in Generation 2 the thaw out chance is a 25/256 chance. In Generation 3, the thaw out chance is 20% each turn. In Pokémon Champions, the thaw out chance is 25% each turn. In Generation 1, a frozen Pokémon cannot break out unless hit by a fire-type move that can inflict burn or if an opponent uses the move Haze. Frozen status can be caused by the moves: Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Freezing Glare, Ice Beam, Ice Fang, Ice Punch, Powder Snow, Secret Power (when used in snow or ice weather), Shadow Chill, or Tri Attack. Most Pokémon Games
Frostbite In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the freeze status conditions is replcaaed with frostbite. Frostbite has the Pokémon lose 1/16 of their maximum health every turn and reduces damage dealt by a frostbitten Pokémon's special moves. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Paralysis Has a chance of preventing any action in battle and lowers speed stat. Usually caused by Electric type skills, it lasts indefinitely without external help, any ability like shed skin, or a move like rest. In later games, attacking a shocked enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Paralysis in general has a 25% chance of having a Pokémon be unable to attack asides from Pokémon Champions. In Generation 1, paralysis reduces a Pokemon's speed by 75% rounded down due to a stats modification glitch (along with this, using moves like agility would return the dropped speed to normal and double it and the speed drop would stay even after being cured of Paralysis using an item or through Rest). In Generation 2, the irregularities are fixed. In Generations 7 and 8 the paralysis reduces the Pokémon's speed by 50%. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the paralysis is changed to reduce the affected Pokémon's movement speed during battle. In Pokémon Champions, paralyzed Pokémon have a 12.5% chance to be fully paralyzed. The ability to paralyze can be done by the following moves: Body Slam, Bolt Strike, Bounce, Buzzy Buzz, Combat Torque, Dire Claw, Discharge, Dragon Breath, Fling (if holding a Light Ball), Force Palm, Freeze Shock, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Stun Shock, G-Max Volt Crash, Glare, Lick, Nuzzle, Psycho Shift (if user of the attack is already paralyzed), Secret Power (When used on plain terrain, building floors, link battles, Sky Battles, Distortion World, or Electric Terrain is in effect), Shadow Bolt, Spark, Splishy Splash, Stoked Sparksurfer, Stun Spore, Thunder, Thunder Fang, Thunder Punch, Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Tri Attack, Volt Tackle, Wildbolt Storm, and Zap Cannon. Most Pokémon Games
Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. In Generation 1 a poisoned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of their maximum health at the end of every turn. A badly poisoned Pokémon still takes 1/16 of their maximum health at first, however the damage increases by 1/16 each time it takes poison damage. In Generation 2, the damage is lowered to 1/8 of its maximum damage and poison damage taken by a badly poisoned Pokémon doesn't interact with other types of recurrent damage. From Generation 1 to 4 all poisoned Pokémon in a trainer's party loses 1 HP for every four steps taken (in FireRed and LeafGreen it's instead every five steps). In Generation 1 to 3, the poison Pokémon will take poison damage until they faint. In Generation 4, a poisoned Pokémon's HP will be brought to 1 and then they will cure themself of poison. In Generation 5 to 8 poisoned Pokémon no longer take poison damage outside of battle. In Legends: Z-A, poisoned Pokémon take damage whil it is outside its Poké Ball. The moves that inflict poison are as follows: Baneful Bunker (If Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move), Barb Barrage, Cross Poison, Dire Claw, Fling (if holding Poison Barb), G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Malodor, G-Max Stun Shock, Gunk Shot, Mortal Spin, Noxious Toruqe, Poison Gas, Poison Jab, Poison Powder, Poison Sting, Poison Tail, Psychco Shift (if the user of the move is poisoned), Secret Power (When used in tall grass), Shell Side Arm, Sludge, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Smog, Toxic Spikes, Toxic Thread, and twineedle. Most Pokémon Games
Confusion Confused Pokémon become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy or attack themself. In Generations 1-6 it was a 50% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Generation 7 and onwards, it was a 33% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Legends: Z-A, confusion causes the Pokémon to move sporadically. The following moves cause confusion: Axe Kick, Chatter, Confuse Ray, Confusion, Dizzy Punch, Dynamic Punch, Flatter, G-Max Gold Rush, G-Max Smite, Hurricane, Magical Torque, Psybeam, Rock Climb, Secret Power (only when used on a rocky surface), Shadow Panic, Signal Beam, Strange Steam, Supersonic, Swagger, Sweet Kiss, Teeter Dance, and Water Pulse. Most Pokémon Games
Infatuation Infatuated Pokémon have a chance of not attacking the Pokémon they're infatuated with. There is a 50% chance of the move failing due to infatuation. The following moves cause infatuation: Attract and G-Max Cuddle. Most Pokémon Games
Flinch The Pokémon flinches from an attack, costing them their turn. Only Pokémon with abilites like inner focus will prevent flinching. The following moves cause flinch: Air Slash, Astonish, Bite, Bone Club, Dark Pulse, Double Iron Bash, Dragon Rush, Extrasensory, Fake Out, Fiery Wrath, Fire Fang, Fling (only if King's Rock or or Razor Fang is held), Floaty Fall, Headbutt, Heart Stamp, Hyper Fang, Ice Fang, Icicle Crash, Iron Head, Low Kick, Mountain Gale, Needle Arm, Rock Slide, Rolling Kick, Secret Power (only in caves, rocky terrain, burial grounds, or in space), Sky Attack, Snore (Only if asleep), Steamroller, Stomp, Thunder Fang, Triple Arrows, Twister, Upper Hand, Waterfall, Zen Headbutt, and Zing Zap. Most Pokémon Games
Sleep Prevents any action in battle. The Pokémon is asleep and will normally take some turns to wake up. In Generation 1, sleep lasts for 1-7 turns, with a 1/4 chance to wake up turn 1 and a 1/8 chance to wake up in 2-6 turns. In Generation 2 sleep lasts 2-8 turns, the Pokémon has a 1/4 chance oto wake up in 2 turns or 5 turns and a 1/8 chanc eot wake up in 3 turns, 4 turns, 6 turns, or 7 turns. In Generation 3 sleep lasts 2-5 turns. In Generation 5, sleep now lasts 2-4 turns. In Pokémon Champions, sleep now lasts 2-3 turns. The following moves cause sleep: Dark Void, Dire Claw, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Snooze, Grass Whistle, Hypnosis, Lovely Kiss, Psycho Shift (if user is asleep), Relic Song, Rest, Secret Power (only in long grass, tall grass, or grassy terrain being in affect), Sing, Sleep Powder, Spore, Wicked Torque, and Yawn. Most Pokémon Games
Drowsy The replacement for the sleep status in the Legends games. It has a chance of the afflicted Pokémon being unable to move along with taking increased damage from attacks. Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Fainted Can no longer participate in battle. In most games, if the all Pokémon faint, the trainer whites out and returns back to their last save with some of their money gone. Can only be recovered with revives, healing at a bed or Pokémon Center, or through specific moves. Most Pokémon Games
Wrap Prevents any action from a unit until the wrap ends. Pokémon Generation 1

Trivia

  • Giratina's type combination is the only one to be weak to both of its own types, since Ghost and Dragon are the only types weak to themselves. The Dreepy line shares this trait.
  • Altered Forme Giratina is the heaviest Ghost-type Pokémon and the only Dragon-type Pokémon with a multiped body.
    • Origin Forme Giratina is both the tallest Ghost-type Pokémon and the tallest Generation IV Pokémon.
  • Giratina is tied with Lunala, Dawn Wings Necrozma, and Shadow Rider Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
    • Giratina is tied with Drifblim for the highest base HP stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • Giratina differs from the other members of its trio in several ways:
    • It is the only member without any double resistances.
    • In Platinum, it has its own unique battle music, can switch between Altered Forme and Origin Forme, and has two different menu sprites.
    • It does not have a Pokémon of myth orb in Diamond and Pearl; the Griseous Orb was introduced later in Platinum.
    • Its highest stat is HP rather than Special Attack.
    • It is separated from the other members of its group in the Pokédex by Heatran and Regigigas.
    • It is encountered at level 70 in Diamond and Pearl, while the other members are encountered at level 47. This is reversed in Platinum.
    • It is the only member without a 100% recruit rate in the Mystery Dungeon series.
    • It is the only member whose box art differs from its official art released alongside Diamond and Pearl.
  • Giratina is the only Legendary Pokémon that can be obtained in all five Generation IV core series handheld games.
  • Giratina's encounter in the Distortion World in Platinum has several distinctions from other battles:
    • At the start of the battle, it uniquely descends from the top of the screen and is accompanied by the unique message "The Distortion World's Giratina appeared!" It is still a wild Pokémon despite this message.
    • No platform appears beneath Giratina, and it has no shadow until it uses Shadow Force or breaks out of a Poké Ball.
  • In Black 2 and White 2, Fantina has an Origin Forme Giratina without a Griseous Orb in The Battle Between Legendary Pokémon.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the second frame of Giratina's Altered Forme sprite was changed, but the static sprite remained the same.
    • This sprite is also present in Platinum's data, but goes unused.
  • The symbols for the Platinum expansion and the Lost Origin expansion resemble Giratina's Origin Forme as seen from the front.
  • In Legends: Arceus, a Shiny Giratina in its Origin Forme causes the game to crash when using Shadow Force.
  • Giratina was featured as a lenticular rocker in the 2009 Burger King promotional Pokémon toys.
  • According to Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru, Giratina and the Distortion World are personifications of antimatter. Some fans also theorize that Giratina represents gravity or dark matter due to its ability to distort spacetime.
  • Giratina may also draw inspiration from fallen angels, celestial beings that rebelled against God and were cast out to Hell, paralleling Giratina's exile by Arceus to another dimension due to its belligerent nature. It may also allude to Samael, the ruler of the fifth Heaven who has grim and destructive duties while remaining part of a heavenly host.
  • In its Altered Forme, Giratina resembles a European dragon or sauropod. It also shares similarities with some kaiju depictions in popular media. Its wings may be based on a bat's, while its body and pose bear a striking resemblance to some sphinx moth caterpillars.
  • Origin Forme Giratina's serpentine body may be based on a Chinese dragon, an amphiptere, the Oomukade (a giant centipede with dragon-like features said to prey on dragons and be as large as a mountain), and/or a hellgrammite. It may also be based on a Seraph, a class of angels known for six wings and, in some depictions, a serpentine body. It also shares similarities with other serpents or dragon-like creatures in Abrahamic religions, such as the ancient serpent or the Leviathan. The design of its six wings may be based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs.
  • Additionally, its Ghost type may parallel its counterparts' types: Palkia is part Water, and Dialga is part Steel, with all three potentially referencing the three primary states of matter: gas, liquid, and solid.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus
There is one Hisuian verse that tells of a powerful light creating a deep shadow. I imagine that this deep shadow is Giratina.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Giratina loses its legs upon changing into this form. I believe this Pokémon must hail from a world where the heavens and the earth are as one, though I have no way of proving it.

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't Palkia get 2-C, 2-B, or 2-A as Cyrus was going to use Palkia and Dialga to bring about the destruction of all things[8], which would've affected all of reality?

A: It is shown in Team Rainbow Rocket's DLC that Cyrus succeeded in his timeline with his goal[41] and it only sent him to another world[41]. Rainbow Rocket's existence would imply there's timelines where Cyrus succeeds with his goal yet reality is fine. on top of this, he was using Dialga and Palkia's manipulation of space-time.

Junichi Masuda: We created Platinum with a new method of determining the game's direction that was based on the image of one Pokémon - Giratina. When I imagined Giratina, the idea of a "reversed world" came to my mind. I thought of concepts such as "E=mc2" and matter and antimatter. There is no top or bottom, no left or right. We increased the number of developers for Diamond and Pearl, so we wanted to clarify the game concepts for the team before we started the project Its better to hammer out the overall vision of the game first, and then all the team members will work towards that vision by throwing out ideas. The concept of "ultimate" was what we started out with for this title."
