Genesis Rhapsodos

My soul corrupted by vengeance, hath endured torment, to find the end of my journey in my own salvation... and your eternal slumber...
~ Genesis Rhapsodos

Background

Genesis Rhapsodos is the primary antagonist of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, who later becomes a mysterious and overarching character of the entire Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Once a SOLDIER 1st Class and best friend of both Sephiroth and Angeal Hewley, Genesis soon became hyper-aware of his destiny, as a degrading lab subject fated to die, and sought to change it. Genesis abandoned Shinra as a result, and began what was known as the Genesis War, in which he would see himself be opposed by Zack Fair.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Genesis’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Genesis Rhapsodos was a young boy raised in the small town of Banora, alongside his best friend Angeal Hewley. Although they grew up fairly normally, unbeknownst to both of them, they were both lab experiments created by the Shinra Power Electric Company, as part of the elusive Project Gillian.

With cells of the parasitic alien, Jenova, being implanted within the womb of a woman named Gillian Hewley, both Genesis and Angeal were born from it. As they grew up, the two boys decided to head to Midgar, where they were enlisted into the Shinra infantry.

Only a few years passed before Genesis and Angeal’s skills were recognized, and both were brought into the SOLDIER program. There, they met Sephiroth, a SOLDIER 1st Class who would soon join them as a trio of friends. When the 2nd Class SOLDIERs were out, the trio would often train together using a holographic projection room.

Eventually, Genesis was injured during a spar against Sephiroth, which left a massive gash across his shoulder. As the days passed, Genesis noticed that his wound was refusing to heal at an ordinary rate, which brought him to Professor Hollander. There, Genesis learned of his origins in Project G, and the cellular degradation that came with it.

As time went on, the knowledge of his existence as a “monster” drove Genesis to insanity, and with that insanity came a newfound obsession with a poem he used to simply like; LOVELESS. Genesis grew so obsessed with this poem that he believed it to be real, and thought enacting it would cure his degradation. With these new revelations, Genesis left the Shinra Army and was labelled MIA.

Years passed, and the end of the Wutai War would mark the beginning of the Genesis War. Genesis discovered that he could create an army of clones by planting his DNA onto others, and attacked Shinra with it. Soon later, he revealed Angeal the same revelations that he had come to, and made him his ally.

Genesis caused immense havoc in his Genesis War, which lasted several years. Eventually, he found himself back in Banora, where he discovered and was empowered by the Goddess Materia, and became one of the Planet’s WEAPONs. Minerva, the Goddess of LOVELESS that he had been searching for, appeared to him, and rebirthed him as a being of pure Mako.

In the coming years, Genesis would turn over a new leaf and vow to protect the planet as per Minerva’s wishes. He sealed himself away in a camp beneath Midgar, where he would only be awoken later by the defeat of Weiss the Immaculate and Omega Weapon. Genesis awoke, picking up Weiss, and flew off to complete an unknown task.

Powers and Abilities

Spirit Energy Physiology, which includes: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Blessed (Everyone born into the world is blessed with Spirit Energy), Sheer Will (Willpower alone can be enough to fight off Mako poisoning, and the will of Jenova. Those with a strong enough will can retain their sense of self after dying and returning to the Lifestream), Memory Manipulation, Energy Manipulation, Rage Power, & Aura (Limit Breaks are born of memories, are comprised of Spirit Energy, and are unleashed when the user's anger is pushed to the limit. They give off an aura when used), Non-Physical Interaction (Characters can interact with the souls of the Gi Tribe), Regeneration Negation (Mid-High; Jenova can regenerate itself fully so long as its cells remain, as Cloud Strife participates in Jenova's Reunion despite only containing her cells. Despite this, pieces of Jenova defeated by the heroes were unable to enact the Reunion), Immortality Negation (Type 3; Can completely kill pieces of Jenova, preventing them from regenerating), Accelerated Development (When Sephiroth fought the party far earlier than he was supposed to, the main characters could still contend with him, even after Sephiroth absorbed the Whispers and became stronger than he had ever been)

He became SOLDIER 1st Class), Weapon Mastery (Genesis is proficient with his Rapier), Summoning (Summon Materia allows for Genesis to summon powerful beasts, such as Bahamut and Bahamut Fury), Light Manipulation (Genesis can create light with Black Flurry), Curse Manipulation (Black Flurry inflicts Curse), Statistics Amplification (Defense and Magical Defense increase durability), Magic, Magic Absorption (Osmose drains MP), Flight (Genesis can fly with his black wing), Biological Manipulation (Genesis can plant his DNA onto others, making them clones of himself), Light Manipulation (Genesis can summon a glyph of light), Electricity Manipulation (Genesis’ Limit Break calls upon lightning), Energy Projection and Homing Attack (Genesis can shoot homing energy attacks)

Spirit Energy Physiology, which grants Resistance to: Mind Manipulation & Soul Manipulation (Those with high willpower can resist succumbing to Jenova's will, which passively takes over one's mind and eats away at the soul, and can prevent their mind from shattering), Poison Manipulation (High willpower can prevent the toxicosis that comes with the exposure to Jenova Cells), Power Mimicry & Power Absorption (Limit Breaks cannot be copied by others. Only Zack Fair can copy Limit Breaks, though he is noted to be the only exception to this), Corruption (Types 1 & 2; Several main characters have been exposed to high amounts of Mako energy, and never became Makonoid monsters), Biological Deconstruction & Soul Manipulation (Main characters have fallen into the Lifestream and returned unscathed, without being forcefully diffused or dissolved into it, or having their spirit be eroded and dissipated), Heat Manipulation & Radiation Manipulation (Can withstand Super Nova without any negative effects of heat or radiation), Limited Disease Manipulation (Those with a will to live are unaffected by Geostigma, which infects those with a weak will)

Standard Equipment

Weapons

  • Genesis’ Rapier: An extremely long, red-bladed rapier that houses a blue orb in the center of its hilt. When Genesis becomes Genesis Avatar, his Rapier grows to absurd sizes to accommodate for his new body.

*Summon Materia: Small red orbs of crystalized Mako energy that Genesis can use to call upon legendary, gargantuan beasts from the distant past, to fight alongside him. Genesis has the Materia for Bahamut and Bahamut Fury.

Notable Techniques

  • Black Flurry: Genesis charges magical energy within his hand, before covering them in a swarm of black feathers. This inflicts a Curse upon the target.
  • Apocalypse: Genesis’ Limit Break, which has him summon a large red glyph of light in the sky, before unleashing powerful electricity and energy down on his opponents.
  • Purgatorial Wave: Genesis Avatar gathers a large amount of Lifestream within his rapier, before unleashing it in a large beam of energy.

Other

Weaknesses: Genesis suffers from cellular degradation, which slowly kills him by giving him an inability to naturally heal from wounds he sustained. He grows physically weakened and his hair turns grey, as the cellular degradation slowly kills him. This weakness is removed once he becomes Genesis Avatar, and after he meets Minerva.
