"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

Whew! Today, I ate udon for the first time... And a hot dog too... IIt's the first time I got treated like a person. The first time I got treated to a meal. To me, this is like living a dream. Maybe I became a devil hunter for a really shallow reason... But I'm willing to die to keep living like this.

Y'know... I look fine, but right now... ...My heart... ...Feels like it's at the bottom of a toilet clogged with crap. All the good feelings, all the bad feelings I had up to now... They were all manufactured by somebody else. I'm dumb as a rock, so I was cool with living as the fool... ...But next thing I knew, my ignorance made it all go down the crapper. Thinking back on it, I never made any choices for myself... I just got used... always did as I was told instead of thinking for myself... The only real choices I made were little things like what to eat for lunch. Even if I make it out of this alive, I bet... ...I'll always be living in obedience to somebody like a dog.

The truth is, I... The real truth is... I'm tired... Of eatin' stuff like toast with jam for breakfast! What I really want... ...Is to eat steak for breakfast every morning! I know I shouldn't! I know it's terrible! But it's the same when it comes to girls too! Deep down... I want five!! No, ten girlfriends!! I wanna hax tons of sex!! That's why... That's why I... I wanna be Chainsaw Man!

Tree-cuttin'... ...Gets me 60,000 yen a month. The kidney I just sold... ...1,200,000. My right eye... ...300,000. Sold one of my nuts for... How much did it go for again? Not even 100,000? That brings my debt down toooo... ...38,040,000 yen. Okay already, Pochita. I know! Let's go kill something!
~ Denji's first lines

I heard something recently... Apparently, it's normal to eat your sliced bread with jam on it. Well, "normal" is just a pipe dream for us, anyway. Feels like I'll be paying off my debt till the day I die. And I'll prolly never get to go out with a girl. Can't ask a girl over to my run-down shack, and I don't got money for a date either. If dreams do come true, I wanna hug a girl before I die...

Killing just one devil... ...Nets me about 300,000. Yup, bein' a devil hunter is the best way to make some moola.

So hungry I can't sleep... When I can't sleep, I think about my debt, and then it's even harder to fall asleep... Oh, I know... This is what I'll dream of when I fall asleep tonight... I'll spread jam of sliced bread and eat it with you. I'll flirt and stuff with a girl. We'll play video games in our room together... ...And I'll fall asleep in her arms... Good dream, right?
These guys already had plenty. How come they wanted an even better life? Maybe I'm the same. I shoulda been happy as long as I had Pochita. But I still dreamed of a better life. Oh, I get it. Everybody dreams. You can't help it. Then dreamining's not a bad thing. It's not a bad thing, but... If you're gonna get in our way... Then die!

Looks like you guys... ...Turned into devils down to your hearts. And since I get paid to be a devil hunter... ...I gotta kill devils dead! I know! If I kill every last one of you... ...It's bye-bye, debt! Gyaa ha ha ha ha!!

While I was in so much pain I thought I'd die... In the back of my confused brain... I thought about things reeeal hard, and I realized somethin'... Every woman I meet... Tries to murder me!! Everybody's after my chainsaw heart! What about my heart?! Denji's! Does nobody want that?! Huh?!
~ Denji to Reze

I've always... ...Loved listening to you talk about your dreams. This is a contract. I'll give you my heart. In exchange... ...Show me your dreams.
~ Pochita to Denji

Background

Denji is the titular protagonist of the Chainsaw Man manga and anime series. He is the main protagonist of the Public Safety Saga and the deuteragonist of the Academy Saga.

As a young boy, he inherits his father's debts from the Yakuza. After meeting Pochita, he becomes a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza in an attempt to clear his debt. Once the Yakuza, under the control of a Devil, betrays him, he dies and Pochita becomes his heart. He is then revived and can become the Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord on his chest. After meeting Makima, he became a Public Safety Devil Hunter as a member of Tokyo Special Division 4.

Following Makima's death by his own hands, he resigned from his position as a Devil Hunter but continues to fight as Chainsaw Man under the public eye, all the while being enrolled in Fourth East High School as a student. He is also the caretaker and adoptive brother of Makima's reincarnation, Nayuta.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Denji’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Intro arc
At the start of the series, Denji is forced to do odd jobs and kill Devils for the yakuza to pay off the debt from his late mother's medical expenses that his father did not pay off before taking his own life. His best friend is a Devil dog named Pochita, whom Denji saved by giving the wounded demon some of his blood to heal, unintentionally forming a contract with him. When the yakuza betrays Denji and sacrifices him to the Zombie Devil, Pochita becomes Denji's heart and revives him as the Chainsaw Devil. Denji then defeats the Zombie Devil and a portion of his zombie army.

Afterward, he meets Makima, who forces him to join the Public Safety Devil Hunters and threatens to exterminate him as a Devil if he ever refuses her orders. After killing the Muscle Devil, Denji becomes a sanctioned Devil Hunter and begins working with Aki Hayakawa and the fiend Power.

Bat Devil arc
Under the promise that Power will let him touch her chest, Denji is tricked into becoming a sacrifice for the Bat Devil in exchange for her cat. After the Bat Devil eats Power, Denji chases after the Devil and defeats him. The Leech Devil then appears and overwhelms Denji, but he is saved by Aki and the Fox Devil. Afterward, Power moves in with Denji and Aki, and she lets Denji get to second base as a reward for saving her cat.

As Denji's joy of the experience slowly turns to melancholy, Makima tells him that if he can manage to kill the Gun Devil, she will grant any wish for him. To find the Gun Devil, the Public Safety Division has to collect pieces of the Gun Devil's flesh granted to other Devils.

Eternity Devil arc
Seeking a piece of the Gun Devil at a hotel, Tokyo Special Division 4 is trapped in a moment of time by the Eternity Devil, who demands Denji's heart in exchange for freedom. The Division 4 members begin to turn on Denji to ensure their escape, but Aki defends him. Denji drops into the Eternity Devil's mouth and fights it for three days straight, eventually finding its weak point and destroying it, freeing everyone.

During the victory celebration, fellow Devil Hunter Himeno comes onto Denji before throwing up in his mouth during his first kiss and then offers to sleep with him. Denji refuses, wanting to save himself for Makima, and he and Himeno become friends afterward.

Katana Man arc
Denji and his team get ambushed by the Katana Man and Akane Sawatari, and Himeno is killed. Denji is defeated by the pair and only manages to avoid capture thanks to the combined efforts of Makima and fellow Devil Hunter Kobeni Higashiyama.

The strongest Devil Hunter in the Public Safety organization, Kishibe, trains Denji and Power in preparation for an attack on the yakuza group that attacked the Public Safety Devil Hunters. Denji has his rematch with Katana Man and wins. Joined by Aki, Denji holds a nut-kicking tournament to see who can get Katana Man to scream the loudest as payback for Himeno.

Bomb Girl arc
While out on patrol, Denji escapes from the rain in a nearby phone booth and encounters a girl named Reze. After a short conversation, Reze invites him to the café where she works and gives him a cup of coffee. Denji starts to develop feelings for Reze and begins visiting the café regularly. Through their conversations, Reze learns that Denji has never attended school and offers to break into a local school with him. Afterward, Reze invites Denji to a local festival, and they share a kiss during the fireworks display. During the kiss, she bites his tongue off and reveals that she is a Bomb Devil hybrid. The Shark Fiend, Beam, rescues Denji and the two escape to the Second Division headquarters.

Denji and Beam are assisted by Aki, Angel, and the Second Division for a short time but are ultimately forced out by Reze's attacks. The Typhoon Devil joins the fray, and after a lengthy battle, Denji defeats Reze, using his chains to restrain her. Thinking she will not be able to use her powers underwater, he throws themselves into the ocean. Later, the two wake up on the beach, rescued by a now-unconscious Beam. After a short conversation, Denji asks Reze to run away with him and if her feelings for him were genuine. She rejects him and turns down his offer to run away. Denji lets her leave but tells her that he will wait for her at the café. With a backpack and an envelope of money, Denji waits at the café with a bouquet for Reze, but she never comes.

International Assassins arc
The fight with Reze has revealed Chainsaw Man to the world, and assassins from around the globe hunt down Denji and his heart. Together with Devil Hunters from Public Safety, Special Division 4 works to protect Denji from his assassins, one of them including Quanxi, the First Devil Hunter and the Crossbow Devil hybrid. During the all-out battle, the Hunters get sent to Hell and encounter the Darkness Devil. Denji attempts to fight the Devil but is quickly incapacitated. They are rescued by Makima, who revitalizes Denji and has him defeat Santa Claus.

Gun Devil arc
Special Division 4 recovers from their encounter in Hell, with Aki and Denji taking care of a now-traumatized Power. Makima invites Denji to go on a trip with just the two of them, but he turns her down to help Power. During this time, Denji concludes that there are some things he is better off not knowing, dismissing the mysterious door in his dreams. Afterward, Special Division 4 learn the truth about the Gun Devil from Makima and that they are to take a piece of its body from another country into Japan's possession. When the Gun Devil attacks Japan to kill Makima as ordered by the U.S., Denji and Power are attacked at home by Aki, who has transformed into the Gun Fiend. With no other choice but to stop him at the pleas of the innocents, Denji kills Aki, which greatly disturbs him.

Control Devil arc
With Denji at his lowest, Makima shows her true colors as the Control Devil, killing Power and revealing her true intentions to Denji: to break his contract with Pochita and gain access to Chainsaw Man and his ability. Makima proceeds to break Denji's psyche, leaving him in a catatonic state. Pochita takes control of his body and tries to restore their contract. With the help of a revived Power, Denji is brought back and hides away with Kishibe and Kobeni. Watching the television showing the positive reception to Chainsaw Man, Denji expresses his selfish dreams for his life and desire to keep being Chainsaw Man. Plotting with Kishibe, Denji confronts Makima for the final time and is able to defeat her. Despite everything Makima did to him, Denji still likes her, and to stop her from reviving, he commits to cannibalism and eats Makima's body.

Denji meets with Kishibe, who puts Nayuta, the reincarnated Control Devil, under his care. Later, Denji has a dream with Pochita, who tells him to grant the Control Devil's dream by forming an equal relationship with her as a family. Denji then leaves Public Safety and starts attending high school while continuing to be Chainsaw Man.

Justice Devil arc
Battling the Cockroach Devil, Denji inadvertently saves Asa Mitaka and Yuko, once again killing the Bat Devil in the crossfire. Killing the Cockroach Devil, he is acclaimed by the news for saving a cat.

Still wishing to get a girlfriend, Denji makes several attempts to expose his identity, but to no avail, as Hirofumi Yoshida protects his identity under a secret mission. He later meets Asa, who rejects his claims of being Chainsaw Man. Denji later battles and beats Devil Yuko in a one-sided fight.

Dating Denji arc
Denji gets invited on a date with Asa to the aquarium, unaware of her plan to turn him into a weapon. The Eternity Devil returns from Hell and traps both of them, along with several members of the Devil Hunter's club, via Fami's scheme to force Asa to turn him into a weapon.

While trying to find a way out, Denji tells Asa more about himself, and the two bond as she devises an escape plan. After gathering over one million yen, Asa tells Denji to give her the money, promising to grant any request after they escape, and Denji agrees. Everyone is freed from the aquarium after Asa changes it to a spear and defeats the Devil. Denji walks Asa home and asks her on a second date, which she agrees to do. Suddenly, Yoru possesses Asa, puts her hand on Denji's head, and calls out: "Denji Spinal Cord Sword."

Denji is confused and interprets this as a farewell, mimicking her before leaving. The next day, Denji meets up with Asa after school and tells her his date plan: watching a non-stop movie marathon at the theater. Asa complains about the price, and they agree to have the movie date at Denji's home. Denji reluctantly accepts under the condition that Asa follows the home's rules because, in the worst-case scenario, she could die if she breaks them.

Denji takes Asa to his apartment, where he explains the home's rules to her. As they watch the movie together, Denji tells Asa not to make out with him in front of his roommate, which gets Asa flustered, and she says she has no desire to kiss him and actually hates him. After Asa pushes Denji away, Yoru takes over her body and kisses him. Nayuta comes home from walking the dogs and calls Yoru a thief, linking a chain from her finger through Yoru's skull and turning her into a dog.

Denji tells Nayuta to turn "Asa" back immediately, but Nayuta asks Denji if he is sure he wants that, reminding him that every woman he meets tries to kill him and asks what makes her any different. After some thought, Denji states that it is a feeling. Nayuta agrees to turn back Asa but on two conditions: allow her to eat ice cream every day and not make friends with Asa anymore, wary of Asa's bad scent. Denji is conflicted but decides to put Nayuta first, and she alters Asa's memories to make her believe that Denji stood her up.

Falling Devil arc
At night, Nayuta smells a "nasty devil scent" and insists that Denji go hunt it. However, Denji is depressed and does not want to be Chainsaw Man anymore, saying that Nayuta will only block him from more future ladies. Nayuta motivates Denji by telling him that as Chainsaw Man, he could get more love from people than a girlfriend.

Denji locates the Falling Devil, and they begin to fight. The Falling Devil recognizes that he is Chainsaw Man and requests a ceasefire, explaining that her job is to drop Asa into Hell to feed its residents. Wanting to protect Asa, Denji sees even more of a reason to kill the Devil. The Falling Devil uses her ability to make Denji remember his loss of Aki and Power, floating him into the air.

Denji cuts up his brain to resist the mental attack and drops down to continue fighting the Falling Devil. Craving corn dogs, Denji devours the Falling Devil, who regenerates with a blast, tearing Denji apart from the waist down. After the Devil leaves to search for Asa, an unknown individual approaches the defeated Denji and cuts their hand, using their blood to revitalize Chainsaw Man, saying that he is still needed to fight.

The restored Denji follows after the Falling Devil, who has already captured Asa and made her fall. Still in his hybrid form, Denji quickly jumps over to Asa, grabbing her and holding on to a nearby railing. To his confusion, they continue to fall upward as Asa pours out her negative views on life. Denji realizes the Devil's ability and tells Asa to think happy thoughts, managing to stop themselves in midair. Denji tells Asa that he knows how she feels as he has experienced similar things. Asa asks how he is able to overcome all the bad things in life, and Denji states he has something to live for that keeps him going: to have sex, and Asa reacts with disgust.

Asa and Denji proceed to argue about sex, and Asa tells him that no one would want to have sex with him. This puts Denji in despair, and the two fly up through a door to Hell. Denji finds himself and Asa on the Falling Devil's prepared dish and rushes back to the door, quickly regenerating himself when he gets attacked by an unknown Devil. Denji finds, however, the Falling Devil on the other side of the door, preventing him from leaving. Denji is then surprised when the Falling Devil is slashed up by a Chainsaw Man doppelganger, who tells him to avoid the devils seeking to devour Asa until sunrise.

Denji stands frozen facing his doppelganger, until he and Asa are knocked through the door back to Earth by the unknown Devil's tendrils. Denji is injured but is brought back by Asa's blood as she asks him to save her. Denji quickly gets up and starts running from their Devil pursuer, but he starts getting tired. Asa points to a motorcycle they can steal, but Denji refuses as there is a woman on it. She then tells him to steal another one close by with a man on it, and Denji follows. However, Denji has no idea how to ride a motorcycle, and as the Devil's tendril comes close, Asa transforms the motorcycle into a "Super Chainsaw Motorcycle," which allows them to cut through the tendril as they ride off.

Resistance to Transmutation (Devils are immune to Doll Devil's ability to turn one into a doll through touching them[127]), BFR (Application Based), Mind Manipulation & Information Manipulation (Total; Against devils, Cosmo Fiend needs to use an "all-out halloween"[128], where she[129] can just[130] casually say halloween to a target to affect them otherwise[131], with Cosmo Fiend's ability giving someone total understanding of everything in the universe by having all the contents of all of the books in the library flow right into the persons mind and once they understanding everything they can only think of halloween until they die[132]), Corruption (Devils are able to unaffected by being bitten by zombies[133], which being bitten by a zombie will turn others into zombies[134]), Law Manipulation (While devils are required to abide by the rules of a contract[135], they can loophole and refuse to let its partner use them[136])

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Acrobatics & Surface Scaling (Could run along a wall and fight against dolls at the same time[137][138]), Pain Tolerance (After just getting out of a fight with Bat Devil, Denji while low on blood took repeated blows from another devil and didn't go down before getting stabbed through his stomach[139]), Transformation (Transformative Arsenal; Through pulling the cord on his chest, Denji is able to transform into Chainsaw Man), Natural Weaponry, Weapon Control & Body Control (Denji is able to protrude chainsaws out of his body that he can use to easily cut through many of his enemies[140], he can also freely retract his chainsaws[141]. Can even turn his feet into chainsaws[142]), Penetration Damage (As Denji uses chainsaws from his body to cut through all of his enemies[143]), Immortality (Reliance [On Source]; Denji even when shot directly in the head and killed will always come back as long as the cord on his chest is pulled, due to Pochita's heart keeping him alive[144][145]), Pain Tolerance (Was perfectly fine and able to talk while having himself completely lit on fire[146][147][148]), Chain Manipulation (Can control chains in his body to capture an enemy[149]), Fire Manipulation (His chainsaws give him sparks that allow him to light himself on fire through pouring gasoline on himself[150][151][152]), Consumption (Conceptual Consumption), Conceptual Manipulation, Erasure (Space-Time Erasure & Conceptual Erasure), & Mind Manipulation (Memory Manipulation; The devils that Chainsaw Man eats have their names erased from existence, erasing the names from the past, the present, and even from individuals' memories, with Makima planning to use Chainsaw Man's power to get rid of death, war, hunger, and many of the negative things humanity would be happier without[153]). Resistance to Sound Manipulation (Tanked a sound wave so strong it destroyed several buildings in the background[154]), Trauma (Being in hell and feeling the presence of transcendent devils scare a devil so much it drives them to want to commit suicide though Denji is unaffected[155])

All previous powers and abilities, Auto-Pilot (People with telepathy are useless against Denji as he can fight without thinking about the fight at all and trying to find out how to expose his secret identity while making it seem natural[156]), Blood Manipulation (Formed a contract with Power[157], allowing him to make weapons from Power's blood[158]), Duplication (Outsmarted Makima through using a duplication of himself to distract her and get her guard down so he could attack her with a chainsaw infused with Power's blood to slow her regeneration[159][160][161]), Regeneration Negation (High-Godly; Power's Blood slows a devil's regeneration due to making the blood within one run amok inside of them including[162] Makima, where to even conceptually erase Makima for good requires Denji to not consider what he's doing an attack but a form of love[163][164], where the devils that Chainsaw Man eats have their names erased from existence, erasing the names from the past, the present, and even from individuals' memories, with Makima planning to use Chainsaw Man's power to get rid of death, war, hunger, and many of the negative things humanity would be happier without[165], with Makima's contract powers relate to regenerating[166]), Transmutation (Denji can transform objects into chainsaws[167][168]). Resistance to Mind Manipulation (Denji is unaffected by the Falling Devil's influence, that makes one want to commit suicide like it's a casual thing along with noting when dealing with devils that use mental powers he turn his brain off[169][170][171][172][173]), Gravity Manipulation (Denji is unaffected by Falling Devil's gravity shift due to turning his brain off[174][175][176][177][178]), Transmutation (Yoru's attempt to turn Denji into a spinal cord sword failed[179], where she can turn anyone into a weapon through touching them[180])

Standard Equipment

*Pochita: Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws. He was the original Chainsaw Man prior to becoming Denji's heart. He is the overarching titular protagonist of the series.

*Super Chainsaw Man Motorcycle: A motorcycle enhanced by Asa from the motorbike stolen from a man driving on the street. This motorcycle possesses a very large chainsaw which is positioned horizontally between the two wheels. Its other notable features are a vastly upgraded engine and a black livery.

Nothing notable.

Notable Techniques

*Superhuman Endurance: Due to his rough childhood, Denji has developed a high tolerance for pain and stress, being able to still function as a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza despite having multiple of his organs missing at the time.

  • Chainsaw Contract: If Denji is about to die, Pochita will set a contract with Denji where in exchange for living a "normal life", Pochita will become Denji's heart and turn him into a Hybrid.
  • Pochita: Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil who embodies the fear of chainsaws. He was the original Chainsaw Man prior to becoming Denji's heart. He is the overarching titular protagonist of the series.
    • Devil Erasure: The Chainsaw Devil is infamously able to consume other Devils, causing the "name" they represent to vanish from public consciousness while also erasing their physical existence. Kishibe was unable to recall historical events or things such as the Holocaust, Nazis or nuclear weapons, meaning that the Chainsaw Devil at some point consumed their respective Devils[192]. The specifics of this ability are unclear; Makima was able to recall numerous erased names, and the War Devil wanted to make the Chainsaw Devil "puke" the Nuclear Weapons Devil up. The erasure process can be partial: after the War Devil was partially devoured, the concept of "war" has remained, but no more wars have broken out in the human world[193].
    • Chainsaw Appendage: As an embodiment of fear of chainsaws, protruding from Pochita's head is a chainsaw shaped appendage that functions as an actual chainsaw[194]. This ability is activated when the cord in his tail is pulled. As a full Devil, besides his head, he has four arms with chainsaw appendages. He can also generate chainsaws from his legs.
      • Chain Entanglement: Pochita is able to disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to wrap around his opponent's body. He uses this to pull them closer to him. He's able to capture multiple opponents with it. Beam claimed that the Chainsaw Devil could use his chains to hook around buildings to move around quickly in the past, but this has yet to be seen currently.
    • Body Assimilation: Pochita can fuse with a human body, restoring it to full health in the process. It was done on Denji, turning him into a hybrid. It is later revealed by Makima that this fusion occurred as a result of the contract. In exchange for Denji living a "normal life", Pochita becomes the heart of Denji[195].
      • Devil Transformation: Should Denji's contract with Pochita ever be broken, Pochita can possess Denji's body and return to his original form. Makima stated that he has killed her 26 times in this state. The form seems to be under the control of Pochita as it is shown that he remembers Denji's dreams and tries to fulfill the requirements of their contract by eating a hamburger and going on a date with a girl. After being defeated by Makima to save Kobeni and later being rescued by Power, Denji's contract was restored and Pochita reverted back to his heart form while Denji transformed back into his normal hybrid. Pochita still can transform into his Devil form if Denji removes the heart from his body, in this form Pochita has retain a calmer personality and has two arms similar to Denji`s hybrid form, however his arms are still covered with an armor.

*Fear Empowerment: All Devils are born with a "name" that ties them to a concept. Devils feed on the fear that humans and other creatures have towards that concept, gaining their strength from it. Because of this, a Devil's power is deeply related to how humans perceive the concept and the visual images that their "name" inspire. The more fear is associated with a "name", the more powerful the Devil who possesses it becomes[196]. An example offered by Makima is how a Car Devil would be stronger than a Coffee Devil, since cars conjures up the mental image of getting run over and dying, while coffee does not evoke any scary ideas; another example is the Chicken Devil, which is so weak that it was kept as a class pet for a high school and killed when a student fell onto it. The fear that humans have towards Devils in general is also a source of power that they can utilize, since it was stated that after the Gun Devil attack, Devils grew stronger due to people being more afraid of them. Devils can also feed on the fear that other Devils have towards them, with the Chainsaw Devil managing to become extremely strong by using Devils fear as his source of power.

  • Blood Consumption: All Devils can consume blood of other creatures to heal their injuries, it is also implied that Devils can grow more powerful by consuming blood. While all Devils can consume blood to quickly regenerate, powerful Devils have shown to possess better regeneration[197][198]. Hybrids and other powerful Devils, such as the Gun Devil and Darkness Devil, have really potent healing factors. The flesh or blood of a Devil can be feed to other creatures, making them stronger and even giving them the ability of the Devil they’ve eaten, however this only works if the flesh/blood they ate came from a Devil that is still alive as Denji did not get more powerful or gained the Control Devil’s ability, despite consuming Makima’s entire body.
  • Contract Creation: All Devils can make contracts with humans, allowing humans to borrow some of their power in exchange for a sacrifice[199]. However, Fiends are unable to perform contracts and Devils are unable to perform contracts between each other.
  • Corpse Possession: All Devils can also possess human corpses. This in most cases ends up creating a Fiend, though in rare cases it can end up creating a Hybrid instead under certain circumstances. The personality of the Fiend may mirror that of the corpse if the brain is still intact, as evident by the Violence Fiend's polite and gentle attitude[200]. In these scenarios, the Devil may also retain some memories from the body they took over. In rare instances, Devils deliberately would like to retain the personality of the possessed corpse, effectively reviving them, and take over their personalities from time to time. The only known instance of this happening is with the War Devil, who took over Asa Mitaka's body while keeping her ego intact.
  • Reincarnation: Another ability common among all Devils is reincarnation: when a Devil dies, they reincarnate in Hell; when they die in Hell, they reincarnate on Earth. This ability makes them practically immortal. However every time they reincarnate, their memories and personalities are reset, making them completely different individuals from their previous incarnation. However, if the concept to which the Devil belongs is forgotten by humanity, he is unable to reincarnate and ceases to exist.
  • Flesh Power Boost: It is said that a Devil or human of any power can have their abilities boosted if they eat the flesh of a super powerful Devil no matter what their original power level was. The current only known examples are the numerous Devils who became more powerful by eating the Gun Devil’s flesh and Santa Claus becoming a very powerful abomination after consuming the flesh of the Darkness Devil.

  • *Hand to Hand Combat: Even without his transformation, Denji is a capable unarmed and armed fighter. Against the Leech Devil - which was many times his size and weight - he was able to easily block her blows, whilst delivering punches and headbutts with enough force to damage her[201]. His skills improved further after training with Kishibe, in which he learnt to rely more on strategy instead of blind-strength.

  • Strategy: Despite never receiving a proper education, Denji is very perceptive when it comes to ascertaining his enemies' weaknesses and how to exploit them. Denji was trained under Kishibe, who he refers to as "master" later on in the story, who teaches him various strategies. This is shown in the fight against Katana Man where Denji deceives Katana Man by making him think that Denji can only manifest chainsaws in his arms. Denji also managed to incapacitate Reze by using her weakness against water and defeat Santa Claus by abusing her weakness towards fire and light. In the time between Parts 1 and 2 Denji has continued developing his skills, such as learning to use the chains to reattach his head and limbs after being dismembered and learning to resist mental attacks by damaging his own brain with his chainsaws as seen in the fight against the Falling Devil.
  • Swimming: After meeting Reze, Denji learned how to swim. He managed to use this skill to his advantage during his fight against her.
  • Superhuman Condition: Due to fusing with Pochita, Denji gained superhuman abilities even when not transformed. In his human form, Denji is durable enough to survive being hit by Power with a hammer and getting squeezed by the Bat Devil, despite both individuals possessing immense strength[202]. He is also very strong, capable of decapitating a Fiend with just one swing of his Axe[203]. Due to his fusion with Pochita his endurance has also considerable increased, his mental fortitude has allowed him to fight for three days straight while constantly being injured[204] and remaining conscious even after having multiple parts of his body cut or blown off.
  • Hybrid Transformation: By pulling on the cord emerging from his chest, Denji can transform into a bloodthirsty Chainsaw Devil[205]. Denji needs blood in order to use his abilities, so if he does not have enough of it in his body, he can not fully transform and will instead enter a pseudo-hybrid form. While Denji still has access to some of his powers in this form, they are considerably weaker and his chainsaws are shorter. If Denji runs out of blood, while already being fully transformed, his chainsaws will automatically retract themselves[206]. While in this form Denji still doesn't posses Pochita's signature ability of Devil erasure which was proven in his fight against the Falling Devil which was eaten by him but neither weakened or erased.
  • Chainsaw Manifestation: As part of his transformation Denji grows fully-functional chainsaws from his arms, legs, feet and head. These chainsaws are extremely effective at cutting Devils' flesh, allowing Denji to sever limbs[207] and bifurcate his enemies. They are also very effective at cutting other materials, such as stone and concrete[208], however they have shown to be incapable of cutting through metal[209]. The chainsaws in his legs and feet are not usually active, however, Denji can employ them just by willing it. Just like the rest of his body, these chainsaws are regenerated every time Denji pulls his cord and fully transforms.
    • Chainsaw Retraction: If he needs the full use of his arms and legs to do certain tasks while in his Hybrid form, Denji's chainsaws can be retracted into his body, allowing him to perform mundane actions such as grabbing objects[210]. While Denji can willingly retract his chainsaws, they can also be retracted automatically based on his instincts alone.
    • Chainsaw Wall crawling: Denji is able to manifest short chainsaws under his feet, which he can use to stick onto walls and even walk on them. He used this ability once, in order to run away from a group of dolls that were created by Santa[211].
  • Chainsaw Entaglement: Denji is able to disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to use them in combat. He can wrap his chains around his opponent's body and then pull them closer to him. Denji can also wrap his chains around objects to cut them, throw them or do both[212]. If Denji's arms get torn off but are still connected to his body, he can still use his chain like body tissue to wrap his enemies around. The chains can also be used as grapple hooks, allowing Denji to wrap them around a target and then pull his body closer to said target[213].
  • Devil Transformation: After surrendering his contract with Pochita, Denji transformed into a Full Devil. In this form, Pochita displays incredible speed and strength, easily defeating multiple Hybrid Devils in a matter of seconds. Though he has been shown to have taken damage, and even been incapacitated by being sent to Hell and blasted into Space, these acts merely delayed him for a few minutes before he returned unscathed. His immense power is further highlighted in Hell, where it is implied that he defeated every Demon residing there. Makima stated that he has killed her 26 times in this form. This form seems to lack Denji's personality and awareness, though it has been shown to retain some memories and frequently acts in accordance with them. After being defeated by Makima to save Kobeni and later rescued by Power, Denji transformed back to normal and regained consciousness.
  • Blood Devil Contract: In exchange for finding reincarnated Blood Devil and befriending with them, Power gave all of her blood to revive Denji.
    • Blood Chainsaw: Thanks to blood gained from Power, Denji is able to manifest a chainsaw from her blood. It has similar design of Power's horns. By using her blood manipulation ability, Denji is able to disturb regeneration of Makima which allowed him to defeat her.

  • *Devil Erasure: The Chainsaw Devil is infamously able to consume other Devils, causing the "name" they represent to vanish from public consciousness while also erasing their physical existence. Kishibe was unable to recall historical events or things such as the Holocaust, Nazis or nuclear weapons, meaning that the Chainsaw Devil at some point consumed their respective Devils[214]. The specifics of this ability are unclear; Makima was able to recall numerous erased names, and the War Devil wanted to make the Chainsaw Devil "puke" the Nuclear Weapons Devil up. The erasure process can be partial: after the War Devil was partially devoured, the concept of "war" has remained, but no more wars have broken out in the human world[215].

  • Chainsaw Appendage: As an embodiment of fear of chainsaws, protruding from Pochita's head is a chainsaw shaped appendage that functions as an actual chainsaw[216]. This ability is activated when the cord in his tail is pulled. As a full Devil, besides his head, he has four arms with chainsaw appendages. He can also generate chainsaws from his legs.

It is later revealed by Makima that this fusion occurred as a result of the contract. In exchange for Denji living a "normal life", Pochita becomes the heart of Denji[217].
    • Devil Transformation: Should Denji's contract with Pochita ever be broken, Pochita can possess Denji's body and return to his original form.
