Background

Dante is the main protagonist of the Devil May Cry series. A notorious Devil Hunter-for-hire, Dante is the byproduct of the love between a human woman, and a legendary demonic knight named Sparda. As half-Demons, Dante and his brother Vergil have been gifted extraordinary powers.

Spending most of his time in his Devil May Cry shop, Dante is both highly energetic and highly experienced in combat. He spends most of his time fighting legendary demons who threaten to break the seal between the Human and Demonic Realms, including his own brother. As a mercenary, Dante and his friends take on any job revolving around the supernatural.

The coin that Dante carries around, which he states he uses to make his ambivalent decisions for him, actually has identical sides, meaning that there was never a chance he would ever turn down helping others. The only thing truly different from how Dante used to be, is that he no longer plays around with his opponents)

Equipment


  • Rebellion: Rebellion is Dante's default Devil Arm, a keepsake sword given to him by his father, Sparda. Although Rebellion is a magic blade, its true power has not truly awakened at the beginning of Dante's adventure. After a confrontation with Vergil, however, the Rebellion fully awakens, and with it comes Dante's Devil Trigger awakening as well.
  • Cerberus: The three headed hellhound that guards the entrance to the Temen-ni-gru becomes a three-bar nunchuck set that Dante whips around with great speed. Cerberus inflicts ice damage, and certain attacks are capable of freezing enemies in place. However, it has more limited attack range than Rebellion.
  • Agni & Rudra: These twin swords stand as guardians to prevent the unworthy from passing onward to the Three Trial of Temen-ni-gru. One is a sword of fire, the other a blade of wind. When wielding them together, Dante becomes capable of some incredibly fast and deadly attacks.
  • Nevan: Nevan is the vampiric demon goddess of the underworld, who lures the souls of men into her opera house of the damned with her haunting voice. When Dante defeats her, she becomes a guitar axe of devastating power. Although one of the most unconventional weapons in videogame history, Nevan is an extremely effective demon slaying tool.
  • Beowulf: These gauntlets and greaves use the heavenly power of flash to strike down demonic entities with holy retribution. Although extremely powerful, the Beowulf set requires that Dante get up close and personal with his target. However, the punches and kicks he can deliver with this set leave even the toughest enemies reeling!

  • Ebony & Ivory: Dante's personally designed handguns, designed for rapid-fire action and created by the legendary gunsmith, Nell Goldstein. After knocking an enemy into the air, Dante can hold it in the air and "bullet juggle" it by constantly firing until the enemy disintegrates. Because of their ease of fire at a rapid rate, Ebony and Ivory are Dante's go-to firearms.
  • Shotgun: A sawed-off, hunting shotgun that is very powerful at close range, and useable on the ground or in the air. Dante must break the barrel and reload between each attack, meaning this weapon has a lower rate of fire than Ebony & Ivory. However, when used in close range, Dante is able to blow away enemies physically, knocking them off platforms or far enough away to give Dante some breathing room.
  • Artemis: A gun of the demon world that discharges arrows imbued with demon energy. Artemis can only be fired while Dante stands on the ground, thus rendering him slightly vulnerable to attack. He can also charge the weapon to generate multiple missiles that lock onto a single enemy and home in upon them.
  • Spiral: A large rifle that fires high penetration-type bullets, this powerful weapon can only be fired while Dante stands on the ground. The recoil of this weapon is powerful enough that Dante must recover for a brief instant after each shot, rendering him slightly vulnerable to attack. However, the damaging power of this weapon is enormous compared to other firearms.
  • Kalina Ann: A rocket launcher with Lady's mother's name etched into the handle. The Kalina Ann can only be fired while Dante stands on the ground. The recoil of this weapon is harsh, requiring a moment after each volley for Dante to recover. Therefore, this weapon renders Dante slightly vulnerable to attack. However, the missiles it fires explode on contact with targets of walls, damaging all enemies within the blast radius. The Kalina Ann can also fire a salvo of homing rockets, which target and go after one or more enemies and create a chain of explosions. An amazingly powerful weapon.

  • Amulet: A keepsake amulet from Dante's birth-mother, Eva. It possesses mysterious power that is released when fused with Vergil's identical amulet.
  • Red Orb: A magic red stone of crystallized demon blood. Red Orbs are most often obtained by defeating enemies. They can also be found by smashing furniture, or they may fall out of the thin area when Dante lands on hard-to-reach surfaces. Red Orbs can be used as currency to buy upgrades for the firepower of weapons, and to purchase new actions for Devil Arms. Items such as Vital Stars and Devil Stars can also be purchased with Red Orbs.
  • Green Orb: A magic green stone of crystallized demon essence. When Dante absorbs a Green Orb, his life is restored. Defeated enemies sometimes drop Green Orbs, but only if Dante's life gauge is partially empty and the combo meter is a high level when the enemy dies.
  • White Orb: A magical white stone of crystallized devilspirit. When Dante absorbs a White Orb, power is replenished in the Devil Trigger gauge. White Orbs are located in rate spots on the map.
  • Blue Orb: A magic blue stone of crystallized life power. It boosts one's maximum life. Each Blue Orb extends Dante's life meter by one segment, allowing him to sustain more damage before dying. Blue Orbs can be obtained by collecting four Blue Orb fragments.
  • Purple Orb: Orbs that can be purchased through the shop menu. Each Purple Orb extends Dante's Devil Trigger gauge by one segment. The longer the Devil Trigger gauge extends, the longer Dante can remain in Devil Trigger mode.
  • Yellow Orb: Yellow Orbs allow Dante to continue if killed during a mission, without having to restart the mission from the beginning. Yellow Orbs are sometimes found on the map, and they can also be purchased from the shop menu by spending Red Orbs. Dante can only purchase three Yellow Orbs ever.
  • Vital Star: A spiritual stone made using alchemy. They come in two variants; Vital Star S, which restores a small amount of life, and Vital Star L, which restores a large amount of life.
  • Devil Star: A spiritual stone made using alchemy that restores a large amount of magic power. Devil Stars can be found in certain locations, or purchased through the shop menu.


  • Force Edge: Force Edge is a memento from Dante's father, the legendary Dark Knight Sparda. The sword was used to defeat Mundus and seal the gateway of the Underworld for two millennia. When combined with the two Amulets gifted to Dante and Vergil, the Force Edge reaches its true form as the Devil Sword Sparda.
  • Alastor: The legendary lightning sword is found where it was left centuries ago, impaled through the heart of the Judge of Death. Once attained, the Alastor imparts to Dante special abilities. The Alastor focuses the elemental power of lightning to cleave enemies in two.
  • Ifrit: The Gauntlets of Flame are worn on the wrists to enhance every punch and kick with the elemental property of fire. Because the Ifrits are only effective close-ranged weapons, Dante must quickly learn extra skills to use with the gauntlets so that the range of the weapons increases.
  • Devil Sword Sparda: The legendary Sword of Sparda is the true form of the Force Edge, the actual blade used to defeat the Emperor of the Dark and prevent the entrance of the Underworld into our realm. The Sparda only assumes its true form after the Perfect Amulet is found. This is the strongest blade Dante acquires. The sword can be extended into a long spear-like weapon, and it can even take on a scythe shape.

  • Ebony & Ivory: Dante's personally designed handguns, designed for rapid-fire action and created by the legendary gunsmith, Nell Goldstein. After knocking an enemy into the air, Dante can hold it in the air and "bullet juggle" it by constantly firing until the enemy disintegrates. Because of their ease of fire at a rapid rate, Ebony and Ivory are Dante's go-to firearms.
  • Shotgun: A sawed-off, hunting shotgun that is very powerful at close range, and useable on the ground or in the air. Dante must break the barrel and reload between each attack, meaning this weapon has a lower rate of fire than Ebony & Ivory.   • Needlegun: The only weapon that can be used underwater fires a thin needle at foes. The incredible firepower required to shoot underwater makes this a deadly weapon, and Dante has the ability to kill tough monsters, such as Blades, with only a dozen or so shots. The Needlegun does not work outside of water, and Dante equips it automatically when he is swimming through underwater areas.
  • Grenadegun: This portable hip cannon fires mini mortar shells at enemy targets. The range is minimal at best, and the weapon is heavy to lift and fire. The recoil from each blast gives Dante a moment's pause between each shot. Due to the cumbersome weight and size, Dante cannot fire this weapon from the air. He must be firmly planted on the ground to fire a grenade. However, when the shells explode, shrapnel disintegrates within a short distance. Multiple close-quarters enemies can be struck by a single shot.

  • Perfect Amulet: The combined form of Dante's pendant and the Dark Knight Nelo Angelo's pendant. It allows entry into the Underworld, and can also be used for awakening the true form of the Force Edge blade, transforming it into the Devil Sword Sparda.
  • Red Orb: A magic red stone of crystallized demon blood. Red Orbs are most often obtained by defeating enemies. They can also be found by smashing furniture, or they may fall out of the thin area when Dante lands on hard-to-reach surfaces. Red Orbs can be used as currency to buy upgrades for the firepower of weapons, and to purchase new actions for Devil Arms. Items such as Vital Stars and Devil Stars can also be purchased with Red Orbs.

While the Untouchable is active, Dante's life meter cannot be further reduced and his Devil Trigger gauge remains full. This means that Dante can stay in Devil Trigger mode the entire time and really give his enemy a beating!


  • Rebellion: Rebellion is a well-balanced weapon that Dante brings to the hunt, a keepsake sword given to him by his father, Sparda. It's a standard sword with medium range and fair striking power. Throughout the game, Rebellion remains the best weapon to use against standard enemies.
  • Merciless: A long, thin blade found in the Temple of the Arcana, Merciless has a longer range than Dante's other swords, giving him a slight advantage over enemies who tend to be elusive. However, what it gains in length, it sacrifices in strength as Merciless has a slightly lower striking power.
  • Vendetta: The Vendetta is a heavy blade found in the Power Plant. Its short range and heavy weight is compensated for by an overwhelming chopping power, making Vendetta the weapon of choice against thick-skinned enemies. Dante swings the sword at a slightly slower rate than other weapons, so its not a good idea to trade power for speed against more agile opponents.

  • Ebony & Ivory: Dante's personally designed handguns, designed for rapid-fire action and created by the legendary gunsmith, Nell Goldstein. After knocking an enemy into the air, Dante can hold it in the air and "bullet juggle" it by constantly firing until the enemy disintegrates. Because of their ease of fire at a rapid rate, Ebony and Ivory are Dante's go-to firearms.
  • Submachine Guns: This set of compact Submachine Guns allows Dante to fire at a single target with a high rate of accuracy. However, these guns aren't as powerful as you might imagine since they spray low-caliber bullets at supernatural enemies. While the Submachine Guns lets him hold large enemies at bay, their constant vibrating recoil forces Dante to hold them in front at all times.
  • Shotgun: A sawed-off, hunting shotgun that is very powerful at close range, and useable on the ground or in the air. Dante must break the barrel and reload between each attack, meaning this weapon has a lower rate of fire than Ebony & Ivory. However, when used in close range, Dante is able to blow away enemies physically, knocking them off platforms or far enough away to give Dante some breathing room.
  • Missile Launcher: This elongated surface-to-air Missile Launcher fires a missile in a straight line toward the target. The force of the blast causes massive damage through a direct hit. Plus, any foes in the direct vicinity of the blast will take heavy damage and possibly be thrown off the ground. However, the rate of fire on this weapon takes some getting used to, and Dante can only fire this weapon when his feet are placed firmly on the ground.

  • Coin: A standard silver coin that Dante carries around with him while he's out on Devil Hunting missions. This coin sports a small design of Trish, who inspired his now-named Devil Never Cry shop. When Dante is asked to take on a mission, he will flip the coin; if it lands on heads, he will agree to help, and if tails, he will refuse. This coin seemingly dictates his actions, though it is later revealed to have identical sides.
  • Amulet: As opposed to the Amulet that Dante received as a gift from his mother, this Amulet was one that he only recently acquired. It is a circular, metal object that allows for Dante to equip Devil Hearts, by placing stones into its differently shaped slots. There are three shapes of Devil Hearts, and Dante can only equip one of each at a time.
  • Red Orb: A magic red stone of crystallized demon blood. Red Orbs are most often obtained by defeating enemies. They can also be found by smashing furniture, or they may fall out of the thin area when Dante lands on hard-to-reach surfaces.   • Holy Star: A special stone of divine blessing that purifies the body. Due to the extremely powerful purification powers in this stone, using it will instantly negate any poisons that Dante's been inflicted with.

  • Aerial Heart: Dante gains the power to fly in his Devil Trigger state when this stone is equipped in his Amulet.
  • Quick Heart: Dante can greatly increase ground-running and attack speeds while in Devil Trigger by equipping this stone in his Amulet. When Dante needs to cross long areas or run behind an enemy very quickly, this Heart is sure to help succeed.
  • Flame Heart: When this stone is equipped in the round slot on Dante's Amulet, all of his attacks while in Devil Trigger will unleash the power of fire.
  • Frost Heart: Dante's Devil Trigger attacks will chill enemies to the core when this stone is equipped in the round slot on his Amulet.
  • Electro Heart: When this stone is equipped in the round slot of Dante's Amulet, he is able to utilize the power of electricity while in his Devil Trigger state, which he often uses to exploit the weaknesses of his opponents who wear metal armor.
  • Healing Heart: When the Healing Heart is equipped in the Amulet, Dante gains the ability to regenerate his vitality while in his Devil Trigger state. The restorative effects fights the debilitation of negative ailments such as poisoning, and vitality draining items such as the Evil Heart.
  • Offence Heart: Although Dante inflicts an intense amount of damage to enemies while he remains in Devil Trigger, that effect can be nearly doubled by equipping the Offence Heart in the Amulet. The damage of Dante's arsenal receives the most apparent boost, allowing for him to do more damage than ever with gunfire and thrown weapons.
  • Chrono Heart: When this stone is inserted into the teardrop shaped indentation in the Amulet, Dante gains the ability to move at a speed much faster than the demons. Each time Dante enters Devil Trigger while having this stone equipped, the enemies around him appear to move in short jerks only.


  • Rebellion: Rebellion is a well-balanced weapon that Dante brings to the hunt, a keepsake sword given to him by his father, Sparda. It's a standard sword with medium range and fair striking power. Throughout the game, Rebellion remains the best weapon to use against standard enemies.
  • Gilgamesh: Made of a devilish metal that absorbs organic material and transforms it to steel, this weapon will shock and awe enemies with its brute force.
  • Lucifer: This netherworldly weapon spawns countless explosive blades that hover with the oppressiveness of impending doom.

  • Ebony & Ivory: Dante's personally designed handguns, designed for rapid-fire action and created by the legendary gunsmith, Nell Goldstein. After knocking an enemy into the air, Dante can hold it in the air and "bullet juggle" it by constantly firing until the enemy disintegrates. Because of their ease of fire at a rapid rate, Ebony and Ivory are Dante's go-to firearms.
  • Coyote-A: A sawed-off, hunting shotgun that is very powerful at close range, and useable on the ground or in the air. Dante must break the barrel and reload between each attack, meaning this weapon has a lower rate of fire than Ebony & Ivory. However, when used in close range, Dante is able to blow away enemies physically, knocking them off platforms or far enough away to give Dante some breathing room.
  • Pandora: A demonic weapon capable of 666 calamitous forms. It spells misery and disaster for countless foes. It can take on numerous forms of projectile weapons useable by Dante, such as a gun, a mounted missile launcher, a gatling gun, and even a laser cannon.

  • Balrog: A devil arm made for melee combat, brimming with the sealed power of the king of Fire Hell. Kick Mode unleashes powerful kicks, while Blow Mode allows for nimble maneuvers. Dante makes use of both modes to crush demons with ease.
  • Cavaliere: Parts of Cavaliere Angelo fused into a motorbike, creating twin blades wielded from the bike's handlebars. Many of Cavaliere's attacks inflict continuous damage from the rotation of the wheels.

Notable Techniques


  • Trickster: When this mode is enabled, Dante becomes able to perform evasive dodge moves, and also enables other stunts that may allow for him to land on hard-to-reach places when jumping.
  • Swordmaster: This Style further enhances the capabilities of all melee weapons, such as the Devil Arms. When utilizing this Style, Dante can perform additional moves and combos beyond the Devil Arms' normal capabilities.
  • Gunslinger: The Gunslinger Style maximizes the potential of firearms, and enables extra attacks with each weapon beyond the standard point-and-fire action.
  • Royal Guard: The Royal Guard Style is almost a kind of Demon martial arts. Dante can block incoming enemy attacks, all the while building up a charge that can be unleashed in Release or Air Release combos. Dante can also use this to absorb attacks and use them to replenish his health meter. Royal Guard requires a lot of precision in order to properly guard any and all attacks.
  • Quicksilver: Dante learns the Quicksilver Style after defeating Geryon. This Style allows for Dante to greatly slow his perception of time with the snap of his fingers, making it appear as though everything around him has slowed to a halt. This allows for him to dodge enemy attacks and deliver his own combos before they even know what him them.
  • Doppelganger: Dante learns the Doppelganger Style after defeating the Doppelganger enemy. This style allows for Dante to essentially create a duplicate image of himself while in Devil Trigger form. The Doppelganger mimics all of Dante's attacks, thereby doubling the amount of damage Dante deals.

  • Air Hike: Dante uses dark power to create a circular platform under his feet, from which he leaps higher into the air.
  • Stinger: Dante lunges forwards and spears the enemy. This move is a great way to approach enemies swiftly and knock them off balance, so that other attacks may follow. Dante usually follows-up Stinger by stabbing repeatedly at a rapid pace, which is referred to as Million Stab.
  • Drive: When at a medium range from his opponent, Dante charges his Rebellion blade and then releases it in a powerful swing, sending an air blade across the ground toward the foe Dante is facing.

Other

Weaknesses: Dante is quite arrogant at times, never taking battles seriously and worsening conflicts far beyond necessity. He constantly plays around with his foes, mocks them, and does many things to get under their skin. This can result in him being caught off guard, as underestimating his opponents often leads to. Even in times of his life when he wasn't highly energetic, Dante is still quite flashy and doesn't prioritize finishing fights as quickly as he should.
