Kamen Rider Double

Now, count up your sins/crimes!
~ Kamen Rider Double's pre-battle catchphrase

Background

The two in one detective and Kamen Rider from 2009 made up of Shotaro Hidari and Philip. They are capable of swapping forms using the eight Gaia Memories they possess in the Doubledriver in order to keep their opponents on their toes.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of the story of Kamen Rider W and some of Fuuto Tantei. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

In 2008, Sokichi and Shotaro went on a mission to retrieve the "Chosen Child" from a building controlled by the Sonozaki family by a woman known to them only as "Shroud". Sokichi gives him a attaché case and an order to wait for him to return as he fights off Sonozaki Dopants, but Shotaro disobeys and follows a mysterious man he sees that he deems to be the one they are looking for. The man reveals himself as the one who created the Gaia Memories with his ability to access the Gaia Library, during which Shotaro drops the case and reveals a mysterious device to which the mysterious man said it was designed to use his power. Shotaro accidentally pushed the man into a transportation device that took him to a crystalline structure in the center of the Gaia Tower. Sokichi and Shotaro both arrive at the tower where they free the mysterious man and Sokichi grants him the name of "Philip" after his favorite fictional character. The three of them begin to leave the tower, however the guards appear and open fire on the trio, Sokichi is shot down during this. Before his death, Sokichi gives Shotaro his torn hat and told him to finish the case. When the Taboo Dopant appeared, whom Sokichi had fought to a draw earlier which lead to his driver being damaged and his hat torn, Shotaro and Philip transformed into Kamen Rider Double for the first time. Soon after, the floor collapsed under them and after landing on the floor below the two transformed into Kamen Rider Double FangJoker for the first time, nearly went berserk, and escaped from the tower. This night would later become known as Begins Night. After their escape from the tower, the two worked as private detectives in Fuuto using technology created by Shroud under the Narumi Detective Agency.

In 2009, Shotaro and Philip have been doing work as Kamen Rider Double for a while, however they are starting to run low on funds due to Shotaro's personality making him reluctant to take jobs that he doesn't consider "hard boiled". Shotaro has ownership of the the Narumi Detective Agency taken from him by the daughter of Sokichi, Akiko, who tries to evict him due to not taking jobs and not having the funds to keep the building going. After a run in with the Magma Dopant and Shotaro knowing how to handle it, and later defeating the Dopant, Akiko allows Shotaro and Philip to continue to work at the agency with her as the boss, something that Shotaro doesn't agree with but follows along anyway. In the following months the three of them deal with various cases with various Dopants. In this time, they learn of the Museum and their involvement with the Dopant cases in the city.

In 2010, Shotaro and Philip transform into FangJoker for the first time since Begins Night after the Fang Memory tracks Philip down to protect him, but they are able to control it this time due to their relationship allowing Philip remain calm in the form. Later, they begin to work with Ryu Terui, chief of Fuuto Police and Kamen Rider Accel, on various cases involving Dopants. In one of their cases, involving a magician who has involuntarily become the Invisible Dopant, they discover the identity of Dr. Shinkuro Isaka, aka the Weather Dopant, who was the killer of Terui's family and a benefactor of Museum and attempt to take him down twice, however in both attempts he manages to get away. Some time later, Philip gets injured pretty badly in the fight with the Nightmare Dopant but is taken by the Xtreme Memory and brought to Shroud, who tells him that she still needs him for her plans, and that Shotaro is becoming too weak for Philip's growing strength in Double. Philip denies this and later accesses CycloneJokerXtreme with Shotaro, proving that they are true partners. Later on, Philip discovers his true identity as Raito Sonozaki, the youngest son of the Sonozaki family who is in control of Museum. Philip begins to be haunted in the Gaia Library by his older sister, Wakana Sonozaki, who had gained the power to access the Gaia Library by entering her own Xtreme form, Claydoll Xtreme. Shotaro, Philip, and Terui all learn of Shroud's true intentions to take down Ryubee Sonozaki, her ex-husband and the Terror Dopant and leader of Museum, and to have Philip and Terui become CycloneAccelXtreme to mix Philip's power with Terui's unique physiology that grants him a near immunity to mind based power such as the Terror Dopant's powers.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of the story of the movie Kamen Rider W Forever: A to Z/The Gaia Memories of Fate. As it's details aren't needed to understand the rest of the plot, it has been put into it's own dropdown.

After this, an incident begins in which 25 T2 Gaia Memories are spread around Fuuto by Katsumi Daido, a member of NEVER and a Necro-Over, taking down a helicopter that was headed out of Fuuto to the main base of Foundation X, the company that had been funding Museum, that had 26 of the T2 Gaia Memories on board for transport, one of which, Eternal, was taken by Daido in order to transform into Kamen Rider Eternal. Terui finds the Nasca and Weather Dopants, two dopants who had their users die earlier in the series as well as their memories broken, and proceeds to fight and beat them on his own only to find that after performing a Memory Break on them, their Gaia Memories didn't break. At the same time, Double was fighting the Iceage and Violence Dopants, two other Dopants who had been defeated earlier in the series, getting the same result as Terui where the Gaia Memories didn't break after a Memory Break, however they also see a green Dopant save a mother and child from falling debris. After the Kamen Rider pays attention to the Dopants again, they see that two of their friends who explain that they had the Gaia Memories forcibly enter their bodies. Back at the office, the two detectives and Terui are informed by a woman who calls herself Maria S. Cranberry that these new Gaia Memories are the T2 versions that are more powerful than the T1 versions they had been using that were refined further than the purified Memories the Riders use.

When Shotaro and Akiko go to speak with some of Shotaro's informants who had found some of the T2 Memories, one of them nearly had one enter them before they threw it into the street. The memory was picked up by a motorcyclist who was soon known as Reika Hanehara, a member of NEVER and a Necro-Over and the T2 Heat Dopant, who leads Double into a trap with the T2 Luna Dopant and the T2 Metal Dopant, which quickly overwhelmed Double before they are rescued by the green Dopant. Philip receives an urgent call on his Stag Phone from Maria that tells him to come to the Fuuto Tower construction site with all the T2 Gaia Memories they had collected, however this was merely a trap set up by Daido to get all the T2 Memories. Daido transforms into Eternal and declares himself a Kamen Rider, which causes Shotaro and Philip to get mad and turn into FangJoker to fight him. Accel was preoccupied with NEVER's sniper, who was also the T2 Trigger Dopant. In the fight, Eternal uses the T2 Eternal Memory to disable all non-T2 Gaia Memories with Eternal Requiem, which stopped the two other Kamen Riders from even transforming. The group learns that Maria was the green dopant, now known as the T2 Cyclone Dopant, after she saves Akiko from the T2 Trigger Dopant and then gives NEVER the group's T2 Memories. This act causes Shotaro and Philip to fight over if Maria can be trusted and causes Philip to storm off, which leads to him getting kidnapped by NEVER.

NEVER, having set up base in Fuuto Tower with their ultimate weapon the X-Bicker, sets up a 1 billion yen reward and membership into their group to live what they are going to do to the person who can find the one Memory they are missing, the J Memory. Shotaro, back at the office, sees a vision of Kamen Rider Skull that helps him realize what Philip was feeling and also seeing his Lostdriver on the table. Shotaro investigates the Driver before Reika busts into the office to kill him, however Shotaro is able to at least hold her off until she turns into the T2 Heat Dopant. During the fight, Shotaro discovers the T2 Joker Memory and transforms into Kamen Rider Joker and proceeds to defeat the T2 Heat Dopant. On his way to Fuuto Tower, Shotaro manages to defeat the T2 Metal Dopant and Terui was distracting the T2 Trigger and Luna Dopants so Shotaro could make it to the tower. When Shotaro makes it to the NEVER base, he is quickly overwhelmed by Daido as Eternal, who uses the T2 Zone Memory to summon all the T2 Memories into the X-Bicker with plans to use it to turn everyone in Fuuto into Necro-Overs. While Daido is distracted with a decaying Reika asking for help, who learnt that if Necro-Overs are hit by a Maximum Drive they begin to decay rapidly, and pushes her to the side, Philip, with Shotaro giving him cover, disables the X-Bicker due to being connected to it as it's "core" as well as disabling Eternal's Eternal Requiem , as well as Maria injecting Daido with an anti-Necro-Over solution to stop him albeit temporarily as he shoots her and injects himself with a stabilizer.

After Daido leaves the room, Shotaro and Philip turn into Double in hopes of chasing him, however they are dragged by the T2 Luna Dopant to slow them down. As Double and the T2 Luna Dopant fight, a man comes chasing after a medal and reveals himself to be Kamen Rider OOO and says to leave the Dopant to him. Double takes the HardTurbuler to chase Eternal to the top of Fuuto Tower, who plans to release the X-Bicker's energy to destroy the city. After a fight that had Double go between all 9 of their basic forms, they turned into CycloneJokerXtreme to finish off Eternal, however he used the T2 Zone Memory to summon all the T2 Memories once more into a harness he had that could hold all of them and powering up to an even greater strength. He releases some of the X-Bicker's energy in the Never Ending Hell Maximum Drive, and sending Double downwards in a heavily injured state, however the hopes of the people in Fuuto was enough for a powerful wind to blow and enhance the power of the Xtreme Memory further, turning Double into their CycloneJokerGoldXtreme form. In this form, Double delivers the Golden Xtreme kick to Extreme, sending him up into the air and exploding into a massive fireball that was visible throughout Fuuto.

Following the events of The Gaia Memories of Fate, Shotaro takes on a case that involves getting back an object known as "The Devil's Tail" for an employee of Museum who said that Ryubee needed it for something, which was to commence the Gaia Impact. After obtaining The Devil's Tail, Shotaro and Philip are confronted by Ryubee. Shotaro begins to feel immense terror at the mere sight of Ryubee and freezes up due to the power of the Terror Dopant being so great that it works without him even needing to transform. After a talk with Philip, who had been taken by Ryubee to be used as a sacrifice so the Sonozaki family could become one with the Earth, Shotaro remembers the reason he became Kamen Rider W to begin with and overcomes the immense fear from the Terror Dopant and are able to stop him and his Gaia Impact, burning down the Sonozaki Estate and most inside, except for Wakana who was saved by a member of Foundation X, Kazu.

Kazu explains to Wakana that Foundation X plan to do their own Gaia Impact, which would digitize Wakana and kill all humans on Earth that had low compatibility with Gaia Memories. Shotaro and Philip learn where Wakana is located due to a hint from Saeko, however they also know that if they transform again that Philip will "die" due to his body being unstable and degrading after being partially absorbed by Wakana. Shotaro meets Kazu and sees him turn into the Utopia Dopant, however Shotaro hesitates to turn into Double because he is afraid of Philip dying, which causes Terui to turn into AccelTrial to fight the Utopia Dopant, only to end up injured as he was no match for him. Shotaro, still untransformed, attempts to charge the Utopia Dopant as he drags Wakana away, only for Shotaro to end up greatly injured, which causes Philip grows distressed and in turn Wakana's powers to grow in response. Kazu, noticing this, attempts to kill Shotaro in front of Philip in order to get Wakana's powers to reach their maximum in order to proceed with his plans for the Gaia Impact, however the Taboo Dopant appears and stops Kazu and attempts to kill him, however it is revealed that Kazu is a Necro-Over like the soldiers of NEVER. Wakana is taken off by Kazu, along with the now untransformed Saeko. The next day, Shotaro arrives at where Wakana is being held and manages to use his wits to fight against the Utopia Dopant, holding him still long enough for the Memory Gadgets to break the machine Wakana was connected to. Shotaro and Wakana escape outside as the lab explodes, the Utopia Dopant inside, and the two are greeted by Philip who arrived after being carried by the Xtreme Dopant, however their reunion is cut short as the Utopia Dopant rises from the rubble of the lab. Shotaro declares that he will never let Fuuto suffer, as the two detectives tell the Dopant to count up his sins before turning into Double CycloneJokerXtreme and quickly defeating him. After the fight, Shotaro and Philip have an emotional moment, before Shotaro removes the Xtreme Memory and Philip is reduced to data. After returning to the office, Shotaro sees a gift from Philip, the Lostdriver he had used before and Philip's blank book which now possessed the message "Please take care of my beloved city, Kamen Rider Hidari Shotaro". A few days after, Wakana has her own Gaia Impact in order to bring Philip back to life, but at the cost of her own life.

One year after Philip had become one with the True Gaia Memory once again, Shotaro takes up a case where a boy's sister had been missing for three days after dealing with a disgruntled pet shop owner. After investigating, he learns that she had been last seen with a group known as EXE, who had been buying Gaia Memories to get the attention of someone. After confronting their leader, as well as 5 other members, Shotaro turns into Kamen Rider Joker and quickly defeats the one that turned into the Anomalocaris Dopant, a Dopant Shotaro knows how to defeat even without his full arsenal to his disposal due to a much earlier meet up. Later, Shotaro follows the boy, after having placed a tracking device on his shoe, he is confronted by one of the EXE members turning into the Cockroach Dopant, another Dopant he had fought much earlier, and easily defeats them as Kamen Rider Joker. After the arrest of the EXE members, with the help of Terui, Shotaro is struck down by the Energy Dopant, who turned out to be the pet shop owner and the real leader of EXE, however it is soon revealed that the Xtreme Memory had taken the hit for him, which also possessed Philip inside of it. The two become Kamen Rider W once more to fight the Energy Dopant.

A year later, the events of Fuuto PI begin.

Other

Standard Tactics: If given preparation time, will look up the opponent before the battle to learn the weakness or other means to defeat them. In combat, they will swap between their 9 normal forms to try and take an advantage in the fight. Will attempt to rush down and overwhelm the opponent with FangJoker's agility. When using Xtreme form, they will analyze the opponent and then try to take advantage of the opponent's weaknesses if they have any.

Weaknesses: Shotaro and Philip act independently of each other even as Double, so causing one to argue with the other causes them to have trouble functioning; When using the Fang memory, Philip's body is used which isn't as physically fit as Shotaro's, however by the end of the main series he got over this weakness; to efficiently search the Gaia Library, Philip needs Keywords to narrow down the search | None notable | None Notable

Note: FangJoker, FangMetal, and FangTrigger all use Philip as the body and as such can't be swapped to or out of in the middle of battle to the other forms without both Shotaro and Philip being present in the battle and first untransforming. CycloneJokerXtreme and CycloneJokerGoldXtreme have Philip and Shotaro merge into one body.

Official Stats: CycloneJoker, CycloneMetal, CycloneTrigger, HeatJoker, HeatMetal, HeatTrigger, LunaJoker, LunaMetal, LunaTrigger, FangJoker, and CycloneJokerXtreme

Explanation: The Gaia Library is the records of all memories of everything on Earth via the True Gaia Memory which appear as books on bookshelves, Philip can send his mind to the Gaia Library and project the information onto a blank book he possesses. When using the Xtreme Memory, Double is directly linked to True Gaia Memory and can access any information they need in an instant.
