Asgore Dreemurr

Asgore Dreemurr is the ruler of the Underground and its denizens, monsters. He is the ex-husband of Toriel, father of Asriel Dreemurr, adoptive father of the first human, and the penultimate boss of the Neutral Route. While not evil or malicious, he serves as one of the main antagonists, planning to kill seven humans and use their SOULs to break the barrier which traps the monsters in the Underground.

Background

Asgore is a kind monster that enjoys gardening, Golden Flower Tea, and Toriel's Butterscotch Pie. Like his son, he speaks in southern slang (most notably "howdy" and "golly"). Before his battle, he offers the protagonist many opportunities to explore the Underground and is reluctant to fight them at all; he even suggests that Toriel, the protagonist and himself live as a family if the protagonist spares him.

Monsters in the Underground look to Asgore for hope, and his plan to collect seven human SOULs is one of the few things that keep them going. However, Asgore does not want to kill anybody and feels so guilty that he offers the protagonist his SOUL to "leave this cursed place." Though he is miserable because he has killed humans, he feels that it is his duty to his people to battle the protagonist.

Asgore lives in the past and wants nothing more than to see his wife and child again, even though they have been gone for a long time. He reiterates the same phrase in his journal every day, perhaps in denial that life has changed since Asriel's demise.

Monsters also note that he is bad at naming places, with the names being quite literal (such as naming the monster's first home in the Underground "Home", and naming their new home "New Home"). Gerson suggests this may be because Asgore is not the most intellectual monster, with the smarter member of the royal family as well as the one which was actually running the city being Toriel.

General Description: Asgore is a large Boss Monster and the tallest main character in Undertale. He has two large curved horns, a golden-blond mane, a golden-blond full beard, white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs.

• Battle Armor: A small, three-pointed crown atop his head. Golden pauldrons. A long purple cape that slightly drags along the ground, often used to cloak his armored body. Near-full body armor with a large chestplate featuring a winged crest of the implied "angel" from the Delta Rune emblem. His tasset visually resembles the triangles of the emblem. His feet are unarmored.
• True Pacifist Ending Credits: A white flower-patterned, pink Hawaiian t-shirt. Long purple pants. He retains his crown.

• Kind: Asgore is kind, often quiet, yet upbeat. He speaks in southern slang, including "howdy" and "golly," similar to Asriel.

Relationships

Toriel

Toriel is Asgore's ex-wife. Before their separation, the couple won first place in the '98 Nose Nuzzle competition, and were described by Gerson as being "insufferable together, nuzzling noses, bein' all cute n' cuddly." Their relationship ultimately fell apart following the deaths of their children and Asgore's declaration of war on humanity.

After Toriel left, Asgore appeared to deeply miss her presence. A "Room under renovations" sign was placed on her door in his home, and multiple crumpled pie recipes suggest he attempted to recreate her butterscotch-cinnamon pies—though he could never quite replicate them. This stands in contrast to Toriel, who continues making her pies and maintains only low-maintenance plants in her home. His lingering attachment is further evidenced by his reaction when the protagonist eats Toriel's pie during his battle. After being defeated, he expresses a desire to see his wife and child again.

When Toriel interrupts the battle between Asgore and the protagonist, she chastises him for his plan to collect human SOULs and turns down his request to be friends again, leaving him sorrowful. However, after the fight against Asriel—where their SOULs are saved as one—her hostility toward him appears to soften. In the True Pacifist Ending, Asgore can be seen trimming the bushes in front of Toriel's school.

Undyne

When Undyne was young, she met Asgore in person and challenged him to a fight. After Asgore defeated her by dodging all her attacks without landing any of his own, he offered to train her. When she finally managed to knock him down, Asgore was overjoyed—much to Undyne's surprise. He continued training her until she became captain of the Royal Guard.

Undyne is familiar with Asgore's preferred tea and knows that he often gets marshmallows stuck in his beard when drinking hot cocoa, implying that he frequently visits her home.

Gerson

Gerson implies that he and Asgore have been long-term friends, though it is unclear how long Gerson served as a hero to monsterkind. Gerson recalls Asgore's simple naming style and various moments from his life, such as when Toriel called him "Fluffybuns." Gerson appears to be the only monster in whom Asgore confided his pessimism about freedom and humanity's willingness to trust monsters.

Alphys

Asgore hired Alphys after she impressed him with Mettaton. He is friendly toward her and places complete trust in her Determination research. He supported her efforts by providing monsters who had recently "fallen down," and allowed her to experiment with the captured human SOULs. Asgore also kept in touch with Alphys through messages—both formal and casual, such as one about finding a teacup that resembled her. However, he remained unaware of the true nature of her research progress.

In the True Pacifist Route epilogue, Asgore remains on friendly terms with Alphys. He expresses interest in anime after overhearing Undyne and Alphys's conversation, and readily forgives and comforts her when she admits the truth.

Asriel

Asriel was Asgore's biological son, whom he loved dearly—just as much as he did the first human. Asriel's habit of using words like "howdy" and "golly" likely came from his father, as did, potentially, his lack of naming skills (having dubbed his flower form "Flowey"). After Asriel's death, Asgore was deeply saddened. He did not realize that Flowey was his son. In one of the paths where Asgore sacrifices himself, he states that this is exactly what his son would have wanted.

Chara

Chara was Asgore's adoptive child, whom he loved just as much as Asriel. He considered them to be "the future of humans and monsters"—a sentiment repeated on the Game Over screen, in VHS Tape 5, and when the protagonist sleeps in the bed at Toriel's Home. It is implied that he may have believed the first human was the Angel spoken of in the Delta Rune prophecy.

During the Genocide Route, Flowey states that despite trying "hundreds of ways" to get Asgore to show him the six human SOULs, he is confident that the first human can persuade Asgore to do so.

The Human

Asgore is polite and friendly toward the human, despite them being human. He attempts to comfort them on multiple occasions and tells them to take their time before their battle.

When the human proceeds, Asgore says he was pleased to meet them and bids them farewell before initiating combat. If the human uses the "Talk" ACT, Asgore falters but continues attacking. If they explain that they have died before, he acknowledges this with a regretful nod but persists in battle.

Upon defeat, Asgore expresses his regrets and tells the human to take his SOUL to leave "this cursed place." If the protagonist spares him, he questions their reasoning, then suggests they could live together with Toriel as a family. If Asgore was spared on a previous playthrough, he instead admits he believes the human is the Angel of the Delta Rune prophecy. With remorse, he sacrifices his SOUL to them in hopes that they will find the truth.

In the True Pacifist Route epilogue, Asgore properly offers the human tea. After seeing the Surface, he asks if they would be willing to serve as monsterkind's ambassador to humanity.

On the Genocide Route, Asgore does not recognize the human as a human and questions what kind of monster they are.

Notable Techniques

• Fire Magic: Asgore appears to have a mastery over fire, using it for numerous techniques. These include calling down undulating waves of fire, creating enormous, inescapable walls of fire, circles of fireballs which close in on his opponent, creating large trails of fireballs which track his opponent, and creating enormous bursts of dozens upon dozens of fireballs which are immensely difficult to dodge.

• Trident: Asgore has shown to be extremely proficient with his trident, swiping it across the battlefield in an attempt to hit his opponent. The trident will leave behind trails of magic, making it impossible to dodge by conventional means. When the magic is orange, Asgore's opponent must be moving in order to not be hurt. When the magic is blue, his opponent must remain stationary.

Weaknesses

• Unique Weaknesses: Asgore is naturally depressed and will hold back against an opponent if he feels he's wronged them (this usually refers to human children).

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

• Monsters like Glyde give off the implication that monsters are the ones listing their statistics.
• Mad Dummy has a defense stat listed of -40 but notes because they're a ghost physical attacks will fail. One could say the -40 comes from the fact that the dummy's body is that weak, however, the regular Dummy's check stats just has their DEF as 0, there's really no reason why the Mad Dummy should have far lower DEF stats especially during a pacifist route.
• Characters like Napstablook have a defense stat listed but you actually aren't lowering his HP he was just lowering it for you to be nice.
• Toriel's stats are listed at 80 ATK and 80 DEF, the same as Asgore's stats. Yet in one of the endings Unydne with her strength as stated by Sans literally threw Toriel out of the castle. Despite Undyne's stats being 7 ATK and 0 DEF. This would also imply characters like Papyrus are stronger then her as he has an 8 ATK and 2 DEF, and while she does admit Papyrus is pretty tough, it's never really implied to be that Papyrus is stronger then Undyne. Royal Guard members are also shown to have higher stats then her through this logic.
• Undyne the Undying has stats of 99 ATK and 99 DEF yet due to Mettaton's Invulnerable Body, they have a defense stat of 999.

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore.

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard.

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy.

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion.

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination.

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic.
