Bardock... Why are you going through so much trouble? It's not like a Saiyan man to worry about his children.
~ Gine
If this is all just Bardock being a worry-wart, we'll immediately come after you! Don't worry!
~ Gine

Background

Gine (ギネ Gine) is a female Saiyan whom was formerly a low-class Saiyan warrior, the wife of Bardock, and the mother of Raditz and Son Goku.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Gine's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Background
Gine was once an active member of Team Bardock, a specialized squad within the Saiyan Army. During her time as part of the team, Bardock frequently came to her rescue in the midst of dangerous missions, as Gine was not naturally inclined toward combat. Over time, these repeated acts of protection led her to develop romantic feelings for him, which Bardock eventually reciprocated. Their mutual care deepened into a lasting bond uncommon among Saiyans, who typically prioritized strength over affection. After realizing she lacked the ruthless temperament required of a warrior, Gine left the battlefield and began working at the meat distribution center on Planet Vegeta, where she led a quieter life. Together, she and Bardock became parents to two sons—Raditz, their firstborn, and Kakarot, who would later be known as Goku.

Granolah the Survivor Saga
Gine appears in a flashback depicting events that took place during the Saiyan invasion of Planet Cereal. At the time, Bardock was part of a mission led by Team Bardock—alongside his comrades Leek and Taro—under orders to eliminate the local population. During the attack, Bardock encountered the young Cerealian Granolah and his mother, Muezli. Struck by memories of his wife and their newborn son, Kakarot, he found himself unable to kill them. Instead, he chose to help them escape and seek refuge with Monaito, a surviving Namekian of Cereal. Tragically, the Heeters murdered Muezli soon afterward, leaving Granolah as an orphan who would grow to harbor resentment toward the Saiyans for the destruction of his homeworld.

In another brief flashback, Gine is shown introducing Bardock to their infant son, Kakarot. She wonders aloud if Raditz might feel jealous about having a younger brother, to which Bardock responds lightheartedly. It is revealed here that Bardock was the one who named their second son. The scene also humorously suggests Bardock’s limited understanding of pregnancy, as he comments on the size of Gine’s belly without realizing what it implies. Later in the saga, when Monaito mentions Bardock’s name to Goku, Vegeta confirms the connection and remarks that Goku’s gentle nature must run in his family—a likely reference to both Bardock’s compassion on Cereal and Gine’s naturally kind disposition.

Eventually, when Goku listens to a recording from Bardock’s scouter, his lost childhood memories resurface. He recalls moments with both his parents—the night he was sent away from Planet Vegeta, as well as earlier memories of Gine while he was still developing inside his incubation pod. These recollections allow him to reconnect, at least emotionally, with the parents he never truly knew.

Broly film and Dragon Ball Minus
On Planet Vegeta, Gine is first seen working in the meat distribution center when Bardock returns from another mission. The two greet each other warmly, embracing in a rare show of affection among Saiyans. Gine informs Bardock that their eldest son, Raditz, has joined Prince Vegeta’s team and has not returned home in some time. When Bardock asks about their younger son, she confirms that Kakarot remains in his incubation pod and notes that it has already been three years since his birth, planning to remove him soon.

Later that day, Bardock confides in Gine that he plans to steal an Attack Ball and send Kakarot to another planet to ensure his safety. Surprised, Gine questions his motives, as such behavior is unusual for Saiyans, but Bardock explains that something feels wrong and insists on doing it for their child’s sake. She teases him for worrying so much, remarking that his concern is uncharacteristic for a warrior, to which Bardock replies that her gentleness must have influenced him.

That night, Bardock follows through with his plan. Together, he and Gine prepare the distressed Kakarot for his departure, placing him carefully inside the Attack Ball. Gine hesitates, suggesting that the family flee together, but Bardock insists it would be futile—they would only be tracked down. Fighting back tears, Gine reassures her son that if Bardock’s fears prove false, they will come for him immediately. As the pod prepares for launch, Bardock warns Kakarot not to look at the full moon and mentions he’ll inform Raditz of his brother’s escape. The two parents stand side by side, watching as their son’s pod rockets away into space, uncertain if they will ever see him again.

Not long after, Frieza launches a devastating attack on Planet Vegeta, annihilating nearly the entire Saiyan race. Gine, along with Bardock and most of their kind, is presumed to have perished in the planet’s destruction. No record exists detailing her survival beyond this event.

Appearance

General Description: Gine is a slender Saiyan woman of average height with a light complexion, onyx eyes, and short, shaggy black hair that reaches her shoulders. Her hairstyle bears resemblance to her eldest son, Raditz, though hers is shorter and features bangs framing her face. Her gentle features and warm expression contrast the typically fierce appearance of most Saiyans.

Facial Features: Her face has soft, kind eyes that subtly resemble her younger son, Kakarot, from his early years. Gine’s facial structure and expression exude a more nurturing aura compared to the hardened looks common among her kin.

Clothing/Outfit: She wears a sleeveless black bodysuit beneath dark green Saiyan armor accented with bronze highlights and white outlines. Her outfit includes purple armbands, white boots, and an armor hoop extending down to her thighs. Like all Saiyans, Gine possesses a brown, prehensile tail, which she leaves hanging freely rather than wrapped around her waist—a practice typical when at home on Planet Vegeta, as seen in Dragon Ball Minus, Broly, and Dragon Ball Super.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: In Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden, Gine’s armor color scheme changes to pink with blue armbands, giving her a slightly different but recognizable appearance.

Personality

  • Gentle and Kindhearted: Gine possesses a warm and caring disposition, marked by her gentle and loving nature. Unlike most Saiyans, she lacks a natural inclination for battle, preferring compassion and empathy over aggression. Her cheerful and pure-hearted demeanor is reflected in her youngest son, Goku, and his descendants.
  • Loving and Compassionate: Gine shares a deep emotional bond with Bardock, forming a true partnership built on affection rather than necessity—a rarity among Saiyans, who typically form relationships only for reproduction. Her love extends strongly to her children, as she takes pride in Raditz’s accomplishments and shows deep concern for Kakarot’s safety.
  • Protective Mother: Despite her gentle nature, Gine is fiercely protective when it comes to her family. She openly argues with Bardock about sending Kakarot to Earth, expressing fear for his well-being and demonstrating her maternal instincts and courage to speak out against dangerous decisions.
  • Selfless and Brave: In Dragon Ball Fusions, Gine shows bravery and moral conviction by standing up for another Saiyan targeted by malicious fighters, refusing to stay silent in the face of injustice even at great personal risk. Her compassion and willingness to defend others mirror the selflessness often associated with her son, Goku.
  • Humble and Sentimental: When meeting Kid Goku, Gine resists the urge to reveal their familial bond, choosing instead to protect him from emotional confusion. Her humility and quiet sentimentality guide her actions, as she expresses pride and affection without seeking recognition.
  • Affectionate and Supportive: Even after witnessing her son’s immense strength, Gine’s instinct is to help and nurture him, showing that her care transcends power or pride. Her acceptance of his Earth-given name, “Goku,” alongside his birth name, “Kakarot,” reflects both her love and adaptability, bridging her Saiyan heritage with her son’s unique identity.

Codex Statistics

Grade: B

Tier: At least 8-A. Higher as an Oozaru. Varies-E with Strongest Charged Blast

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3-D

Power Source: Ki (All beings in Dragon Ball[1][2][3] have ki, the very life force energy of all characters[4], ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even[5] block attacks that would otherwise[6] kill them from[7] raising their guard[8], higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them[9])

Attack Potency: At least City District level (Potency) (Despite being a low class warrior, she should be superior to Jaco, as he cannot defeat a fully grown Saiyan. Jaco easily took down several of Frieza's soldiers, who view power levels of 1,000 as completely weak, making them far beyond Early Saiyan Saga Piccolo, who had a power level of at least 408, who is superior to 23rd Budokai Saga Son Goku, who in the previous arc fought against King Piccolo, who destroyed parts of a city with an energy wave[10]). Higher an an Oozaru (Her power as a Great Ape increases tenfold). Varies: Skill with Strongest Charged Blast (Charged Blast have one focus all of their energy into one single point[11], putting the blasts power far beyond what their peak strength is[12], allowing them to destroy things they couldn't prior with their regular attacks[13], this also allows them to use charged attacks that can stop enemies far beyond their level, such as Tien Shinhan pushing back Semi-Perfect Cell with his Neo Ki-Ko-Ho[14], along with stopping an attack shot from Buu absorbed Gotenks[15]. Strongest charged blast can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[16], with blasts capable of[17] seriously damaging/destroying[18] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[19]. Charged Blast also rely heavily on emotional states for example Gohan not believing in himself[20] was having Cell overpower him in a beam clash[21])

Durability: At least City District level. Higher as an Oozaru, Higher with Guard Up (Ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard)

Striking Strength: At least City District Class (Potency). Higher as an Oozaru

Lifting Strength: Class 1 (Superior to Early Saiyan Saga Goku, who before training with King Kai is able to barely move around and jump in gravity that multiplies his weight by ten times, where he's naturally 62 kg, thus making him 620 kg on King Kai's planet. Is a natural inhabitant of Planet Vegeta which has at least gravity as great as King Kai's planet, which has ten times the gravity of Earth[22]), Higher as an Oozaru

Travel Speed: At least Superhuman (Should be far faster than Son Goku during original Dragon Ball and the very beginning of the Saiyan Saga), Higher as an Oozaru

Attack Speed: High Hypersonic, Higher as an Oozaru

Reaction Speed: High Hypersonic (Far beyond 22nd Budokai Son Goku, who could dodge a mouth blast from Tambourine, which he used to tag the flying nimbus where even post King Kai training Goku used the flying nimbus to make it to the saiyans implying it is at least comparable to his flight speed by then, with Goku being capable of traveling over a million of kilometers in two days which results in these speeds), Higher as an Oozaru

Stamina: Superhuman (Saiyans naturally have superhuman stamina due to being natural fighters. Should be comparable to Vegeta who stood thinking for three days without showing any signs of tiring or growing hungry)

Range: Standard Melee, Interstellar with Ki Attacks (Ki attacks can reach out of the planet and to other planets. All ki attacks should be comparable to Goku's kamehameha, which reached all the way to the sun)

Intelligence: Gifted Intelligence (Saiyans are naturally gifted in fighting, Gine despite being a low class warrior should be comparable)

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: What about the planetary feats in Dragon Ball?

A: Planetary feats are normally done through their strongest charged blast, where they can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[146], with blasts capable of[147] seriously damaging/destroying[148] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[149], though they themselves are never capable of leaving this unscathed.

Frieza throws a destroy the planet death ball attack but it doesn't destroy the planet. Goku then interestingly notes the reason the planet didn't blow up is because Frieza was too scared of getting caught in the blast[150] . Vegeta's final flash is noted it's going to destroy the planet and Perfect Cell, who is beyond Vegeta, couldn't tank the blast and had to dodge it last second or it would've killed him[151]. Goku's kamehameha was going to destroy the earth and Cell cannot tank this blast, needing to regenerate[152]. Semi-Perfect Cell explosion was consistently noted it was going to destroy the planet and Gohan and it killed Goku[153]. Ultimate Gohan dies to an attack that destroys the earth, his guard was up too since this was when he was fighting Super Buu[154]. Kid Buu shoots a blast trying to destroy the planet, with Vegeta noting he's going to take himself out with it if he lets it off[155]. In Dragon Ball GT, Great Ape Baby Vegeta shoots a super galick gun that he claims will destroy Earth, when Goku is hit by it, he is knocked out to the point that he can't move for a good while, Elder Kai and Shin later state that Baby is going to shoot another blast that will destroy the planet on, greatly injuring Baby if he's caught in the Blast and will kill everyone on the planet if done[156]. Frieza destroyed the entire earth, killing Vegeta in the process[157]. In the Dragon Ball Super Manga, Gohan tells Goku that he doesn't need to hold anything back and can go all out because anything that happens to the Earth can be restored with Dende and the Dragon Balls. Yet, none of Goku's all out attacks destroy the planet but just heavily causes shockwaves around it[158]. Semi-Perfect Cell unleashes a several blast that destroys several islands Android 16 notes that the attacks are just strong enough to not kill Android 18[159].

In the fight of Trunks vs. Mecha Frieza, who is far stronger than his final form, Mecha Frieza immediately goes for his strongest attack, the Supernova. In the original Z anime King Kai even states this is ten times stronger than the power he used on Namek:

  • DBZ Kai Version[160].
  • Original DBZ Anime Version[161]. The attack is directly noted that it could destroy the planet, but doesn't because Trunks catches it, when Mecha Frieza proceeds to detonate it, the explosion is massive but the planet is still intact, implying Frieza must target the core in order to destroy the planet.
