Background
Son Gohan is the exceptionally talented son of the legendary martial artist Son Goku and his wife Chi-Chi. He was born during a peaceful era and raised under his mother's guidance, who strongly encouraged him to focus on his studies rather than follow in his father's footsteps as a fighter. Although Gohan occasionally trained with his father, his own desire to become a scholar eventually took root, and he began to recognize the flaws and dangers of constant battle—something Goku rarely acknowledged.
Despite this, Gohan's unique heritage as a half-Saiyan and half-Earthling gave him remarkable potential. His mixed lineage allowed him to grow far more quickly than a pure Saiyan, and from a very young age, he displayed intense bursts of emotion that would dramatically boost his power. These surges of rage made him capable of injuring even powerful Saiyan warriors while still a toddler.

Saiyan Saga
Everything changes when Goku’s brother, Raditz, arrives and reveals the truth about Goku’s Saiyan heritage. He quickly overpowers Goku and kidnaps Gohan after the child runs to help his father. Raditz gives Goku a cruel ultimatum—kill 100 humans within a day or never see his son again. Gohan is locked inside Raditz’s space pod because Raditz can’t stand his crying. While imprisoned, Raditz discovers that Gohan may have even more latent power than Goku himself. During the battle between Goku, Piccolo, and Raditz, Gohan becomes enraged after witnessing Raditz injure his father. His anger causes him to burst out of the pod and strike Raditz with surprising force, allowing Goku and Piccolo to finish the fight. In the process, Goku sacrifices himself to hold Raditz in place for Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon. Impressed by Gohan’s potential, Piccolo decides to train the boy himself. He leaves Gohan to survive alone in the wilderness for six months, carefully observing him from a distance. One night, Gohan accidentally transforms into a Great Ape after looking at the full moon. Piccolo tricks him into returning to normal by creating an illusion that the moon was destroyed, then removes his tail to prevent future transformations. He gives Gohan a uniform similar to Goku’s, but with the Demon symbol to mark him as Piccolo’s student. Over the course of the year, Piccolo trains Gohan rigorously, showing no leniency. Despite this harshness, Gohan’s kind-hearted nature gradually changes Piccolo, and the two form a bond. They even share personal talks, with Gohan assuring Piccolo that he isn’t as evil as people say. As the year passes, the time comes for the Z Fighters to face Vegeta and Nappa. Piccolo senses the Saiyans’ arrival and prepares Gohan for the upcoming fight. A third presence briefly worries them, but it turns out to be Krillin joining the battle. Soon Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu arrive, and the Saiyans unleash their Saibamen to test the group. During the battle, Gohan struggles to keep up with their movements until Piccolo teaches him to track energy using Ki Sense, which he picks up quickly. When Nappa enters the battle after the Saibamen are defeated and Yamcha is killed, Gohan occasionally manages to overcome his fear and lands a few attacks, including sending Nappa flying through a boulder. However, his fear still often paralyzes him, making him unreliable in battle. At one point, Piccolo devises a plan involving Krillin and Gohan working together to hit Nappa. While the first steps go smoothly, Gohan hesitates when it's his turn, ruining the plan. Piccolo, frustrated, lashes out at him. After Vegeta gives them three hours to wait for Goku, Piccolo loses faith in Gohan and tells him to go home. Gohan refuses, realizing Nappa wouldn’t let him leave peacefully anyway. As the battle resumes without Goku’s arrival, Gohan regains his resolve and tries to redeem himself. Piccolo creates another plan for Gohan to attack Nappa while Krillin distracts him and Piccolo grabs his tail. Gohan acts quickly, but the plan fails when Nappa reveals that his tail is no longer a weak spot. Later, when Nappa fires a deadly blast at Gohan, Piccolo sacrifices himself to protect the boy. Mortally wounded, Piccolo confesses how much Gohan means to him before dying. Gohan, filled with sorrow and fury, unleashes a powerful Masenko that only slightly injures Nappa’s arm. Exhausted, Gohan resigns himself to defeat, but is rescued by Goku, who arrives just in time. After receiving a Senzu Bean, Gohan recovers and watches Goku easily overpower Nappa. When Vegeta kills Nappa, Goku instructs Gohan to stay back, not wanting him to get hurt again. However, when Vegeta transforms into a Great Ape and defeats Goku using a Power Ball to create an artificial moon, Gohan reenters the fight. Yajirobe cuts off Vegeta’s tail, and Gohan, stunned by the transformation, fights Vegeta while Krillin and a wounded Goku prepare a Spirit Bomb. Though Krillin misses, Gohan manages to deflect it back toward Vegeta, causing serious damage but failing to finish him. Gohan then transforms into a Great Ape after accidentally looking at the Power Ball. In his transformed state, he lands on Vegeta and crushes him. Vegeta slices off Gohan’s tail with a Destructo Disc, but the damage is already done. Goku ultimately spares Vegeta’s life, hoping to face him again someday. Frieza Saga
Following a lengthy journey with a few detours, the trio finally arrives on Namek. There, they discover that Vegeta is also on the planet, searching for the Dragon Balls—alongside someone far more dangerous: his former superior, Frieza. While exploring Namek, Gohan and Krillin witness Frieza and his top henchmen, Zarbon and Dodoria, terrorizing Namekian villages. When Dodoria attacks a young Namekian child named Dende, Gohan intervenes and saves him. Dodoria chases after them, but Gohan, Krillin, and Dende manage to escape. Vegeta later kills Dodoria during his own mission. Gohan and Krillin bring Dende back to their hiding spot, where Bulma is waiting inside a Capsule House. After resting, Dende reveals that the Grand Elder, Guru, holds one of the Dragon Balls. He then takes Krillin to see Guru, who helps unlock Krillin’s hidden potential. Meanwhile, Bulma detects a lone Dragon Ball on the radar—the one Vegeta previously hid underwater—and sends Gohan to retrieve it. Gohan successfully steals the ball and even fools Vegeta along the way. When Gohan reunites with Krillin, the two visit Guru together, and he unlocks Gohan’s hidden potential as well. Vegeta soon realizes Gohan stole his Dragon Ball and grows furious, but the sudden arrival of the Ginyu Force forces him to form a temporary alliance with Gohan and Krillin to fight off this powerful threat. Unfortunately, the Ginyu Force quickly overpowers them. The weakest member, Guldo, fights Gohan and Krillin, but is killed by Vegeta. Recoome is up next, and even with Gohan and Krillin jumping in to help Vegeta, the battle goes poorly. Gohan is left near death until Goku arrives with Senzu Beans and heals them. Goku easily defeats Recoome and begins fighting the others but ends up having his body swapped by Captain Ginyu. With Goku weakened in Ginyu’s injured body, Gohan has to face Ginyu—who now controls his father’s body. Though hesitant, Gohan joins Krillin to fight Ginyu. After some time, Goku regains control with Vegeta’s help, and Ginyu ends up stuck in a frog’s body. With the immediate threat gone, the group gathers the Namekian Dragon Balls and uses them to wish Piccolo back to life and to bring him to Namek. Not long after, Frieza ambushes them, forcing the group to stall until Piccolo arrives. In the fight against Frieza’s second form, Krillin is badly wounded and thrown underwater. Gohan tries to save him but is stopped by Frieza, which causes Gohan to lose his temper. In a furious counterattack, he overwhelms Frieza with a barrage of punches, energy blasts, and a Masendan, temporarily knocking him down. When Piccolo finally arrives, having fused with Nail, he holds his own against Frieza in battle while Gohan and the others look on. Frieza then shifts into his third form and gains the upper hand against Piccolo. Gohan, seeing his mentor in trouble, unleashes a powerful Full Power Masenko. The blast stalls Frieza for a short while, but he soon retaliates and reflects it back at Gohan. Piccolo steps in to destroy the incoming attack and protect him. Afterward, Frieza transforms once again—this time into his final and most powerful form. His first move is to kill Dende, removing the group’s only healer. He then tries to kill Gohan, but Vegeta saves him just in time. Gohan, Krillin, and Piccolo watch helplessly as Vegeta is brutally beaten. When Goku arrives, Gohan is horrified to hear Vegeta cry while sharing the painful truth of the Saiyans’ past and their destruction at the hands of Frieza, who promptly kills him with a Death Beam. With Goku now taking on Frieza, Gohan and the others remain on the sidelines. However, as Frieza increases his power to 50%, he begins overwhelming Goku. While Goku charges the Spirit Bomb, Gohan and Krillin lend their energy to Piccolo so he can distract Frieza. When Frieza tries to eliminate Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin use the last of their energy to momentarily divert his attention, buying just enough time for Goku to finish the massive attack. The Spirit Bomb lands and seemingly defeats Frieza. Thinking the danger is over, the group relaxes—until Frieza reappears, severely injured but alive. He attacks again, fatally wounding Piccolo. In the anime, Piccolo pushes Goku out of the way of the blast; in the manga, the attack was aimed at Piccolo from the start. Gohan is horrified and filled with grief. His despair deepens when Frieza kills Krillin by making him explode in mid-air. Witnessing this pushes Goku over the edge and triggers his transformation into a Super Saiyan. Gohan watches the transformation in awe, but Goku quickly orders him to take Piccolo, find Bulma, and get to the spaceship to escape. Gohan, reluctant but obedient, carries out the task and retrieves Bulma. Later, when Gohan believes Goku has died, he returns to try and hold off Frieza before the planet explodes. He attacks in anger but quickly realizes Frieza is toying with him. Sensing Goku’s ki still alive, Gohan powers up and strikes Frieza with a strong combo and a Super Masenko, but it has little effect. Frieza, impressed by Gohan’s spirit, still vows to kill him for being a Saiyan. Before he can do so, Goku emerges from the water and reminds Gohan to escape. Gohan leaves the battlefield, cheering on his father. He and the others are later teleported back to Earth by Porunga while Goku finishes the battle alone. Although Goku defeats Frieza, Namek explodes, and Goku is presumed dead. Gohan and the others mourn his loss. Months later, they use the Namekian Dragon Balls to try reviving Goku, only to find out he is still alive. The group is relieved to learn he survived the explosion and is staying in space. During the peaceful period that follows, Gohan returns to his studies while Piccolo quietly watches over him and Chi-Chi. Frieza-Androids Interlude
Just as things look grim, a mysterious young man appears out of nowhere. Without revealing his identity, he confronts Frieza and King Cold. To everyone's shock, the stranger transforms into a Super Saiyan and makes quick work of Frieza, King Cold, and their army of henchmen with little effort. After the battle, the mysterious youth instructs the group to accompany him to the spot where Goku will soon arrive. After waiting around two hours (three in the manga version), Goku finally returns to Earth. The youth pulls Goku aside for a private conversation, leaving the others behind. Once their discussion is over, the young warrior leaves, promising to return in the future when two deadly Androids are set to appear. Over the next three years, Gohan commits himself to intense training under the guidance of both Goku and Piccolo, determined to prepare for the threat that the stranger had warned them about. Androids Saga
Just as things turn dire for Goku, Vegeta arrives and reveals his own Super Saiyan transformation for the first time. He effortlessly defeats Android 19 in front of the stunned Z Fighters, completely destroying the android in a display of overwhelming power. With his partner defeated, Android 20 panics and tries to flee. The Z Fighters give chase, determined to stop him before he can cause more harm. During the search, Android 20 ambushes Piccolo and attempts to absorb his energy. Piccolo, sensing the danger, contacts Gohan telepathically and calls for backup. Gohan arrives just in time to knock Android 20 away, saving Piccolo’s life. The others soon regroup, and Piccolo begins to fight the android himself. Thanks to years of rigorous training, Piccolo easily overpowers Android 20 and even manages to sever one of his hands. Soon after, Future Trunks returns from the future and joins the others, only to be confused by the situation—these Androids are not the same ones he had encountered in his timeline. Before they can get answers, Android 20 escapes once again. While the others search for him, Gohan takes Bulma, Trunks (the infant version), and Yajirobe back to Capsule Corporation for safety. Meanwhile, Dr. Gero (Android 20) returns to his secret lab and activates two of his more advanced androids: Android 17 and Android 18. However, things spiral out of control when the new androids rebel, killing Dr. Gero on the spot. They then awaken another creation, Android 16, whose programming is focused solely on killing Goku. The Z Fighters attempt to stop the trio, but they are outmatched and suffer a brutal defeat. With little effort, the Androids brush past them and fly off to begin their hunt for Goku. Cell Saga
After Goku recovers from the heart virus, he brings Gohan, Future Trunks, and Vegeta to Kami’s Lookout, where Mr. Popo shows them the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to prepare for the threat of Cell. Future Trunks and Vegeta enter first for a full day while Goku and Gohan wait, sensing Piccolo battling the Androids below. Gohan wants to help Piccolo but Goku stops him, saying he’s not strong enough yet and would only get in the way. Goku promises they will assist Piccolo after training. When Cell, now powered up, nearly kills Piccolo, Goku and Gohan sense Piccolo’s energy vanish. Believing Piccolo is dead, an enraged Gohan tries to rush down but is stopped by Goku. Goku punches him down to calm him, and Mr. Popo explains that Goku is also deeply hurt. They apologize to each other, and Goku vows to honor Piccolo’s sacrifice. After Cell absorbs Android 17 to become Semi-Perfect, he targets Android 18. Tien arrives, attacking Cell with his Neo Tri-Beam to buy time, allowing Androids 18 and 16 to escape. Tien collapses from exhaustion, but Goku teleports to the battlefield, rescues Tien and Piccolo, and returns them to the Lookout where a Senzu Bean heals them. Piccolo admits their efforts against Semi-Perfect Cell have failed. Mr. Popo then brings the group to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where Future Trunks and Vegeta emerge stronger, equipped with new Saiyan armor made by Bulma. They fly to Earth to face Semi-Perfect Cell. Meanwhile, Goku and Gohan begin training in the chamber, also wearing Bulma’s Saiyan armor. Gohan struggles to become a Super Saiyan, but Goku explains that anger and rage trigger the transformation. To help, Goku fights Gohan at full power, firing a Kamehameha that Gohan blocks. Reflecting on times he was helpless while others protected him, Gohan becomes furious, transforming into a Super Saiyan and firing back. Goku dodges and tells Gohan to focus, then they take a break and Goku even cuts Gohan’s hair. Training resumes, with Gohan improving in his Super Saiyan form. During lunch, Gohan accidentally burns meat and sets Goku’s hair on fire, leading to a humorous lecture about power control. Goku demonstrates advanced Super Saiyan forms that Vegeta and Future Trunks use against Cell’s perfect form. Gohan believes Goku can defeat Cell, but Goku explains his bulky muscles reduce speed, crucial for the fight. Goku plans to master Super Saiyan Full Power and encourages Gohan to maintain the form for a whole day until it feels natural. At one point, Gohan surprises Goku by transforming into an unprecedented Super Saiyan form before collapsing from exhaustion. Though he doesn’t remember it, this event convinces Goku that Gohan is the only one capable of defeating Perfect Cell. After completing their training, Goku and Gohan exit the chamber earlier than expected, both in their Super Saiyan Full Power forms. While eating food prepared by Mr. Popo, Future Trunks arrives with news that Perfect Cell has challenged the Earth to the Cell Games tournament. Goku sees it as an intriguing challenge. For the tournament, Goku dons his trademark orange and blue outfit, while Gohan requests Piccolo to make a uniform like his. Piccolo complies, and Gohan appreciates the gift. Goku visits Perfect Cell via Instant Transmission, but admits he can’t defeat him. Piccolo suggests more training in the chamber, but Goku declines, saying he and Gohan will train outside, surprising everyone. Leaving the Lookout, Goku and Gohan display their new power to Korin and Yajirobe, then head to Kame House to collect Chi-Chi. Gohan asks if they can beat Cell after resting and training for nine days. Goku laughs, saying they can relax for now. When Chi-Chi sees them, she freaks out, exclaiming Gohan looks like a hair-dyeing punk. In a filler episode, Gohan visits Chazke Village to run errands for his mother. There, he meets Lime and Mr. Lao and unexpectedly encounters Mercenary Tao, one of his father's deadliest childhood enemies, now rebuilt as a cyborg. Shocked to learn Gohan is Goku's son, Mercenary Tao flees by flying away on a tree. Goku arrives shortly after, and Mr. Lao gives them the groceries, encouraging them that they can defeat Cell. Gohan and Goku then say goodbye and fly home. In another filler, Gohan celebrates his 11th birthday, revealing memories of his early life. One flashback shows Goku, Chi-Chi, and the Ox-King choosing his name after Grandpa Gohan, Goku’s adoptive grandfather, when the baby laughs at "Gohan." Another flashback shows baby Gohan speeding down a hill in a stroller after Goku accidentally lets go. The stroller crashes into a tree, but Gohan uses his hidden power to smash through it unharmed. Goku catches him, and they laugh. Back home, Gohan celebrates his birthday with family and friends. Before blowing out the candles, he silently wishes for the strength to defeat Cell and protect his family. When he blows out the candles, he accidentally splatters cake on everyone’s faces. Chi-Chi initially scolds him but then laughs, saying it’s because he’s Goku’s son. Ten days later, the Z Fighters arrive at the Cell Games to face Perfect Cell. Goku fights first, matching Cell blow for blow but eventually forfeits after a draining Instant Kamehameha. He chooses Gohan to fight instead. Gohan notes that keeping up with Goku and Cell was manageable, implying he might be stronger than Goku at full power. Reluctantly, Gohan fights Cell. Gohan lacks his father's fighting spirit and reluctance to kill gives Cell the advantage. He tells Cell his hidden power emerges when enraged, as seen when he fought Raditz, trained with Piccolo, and battled Frieza. Cell tries to provoke Gohan by attacking him relentlessly. When the fight turns dangerous, Android 16 attempts to self-destruct to kill Cell, but Krillin reveals the bomb was removed. Cell breaks free and destroys Android 16’s body, leaving only his head intact. The head rolls to Mr. Satan and his group, who have been watching secretly. Cell summons seven Cell Juniors to attack the Z Fighters. Gohan becomes furious seeing his friends beaten and the head of Android 16 convinces Mr. Satan to toss it to Gohan. The head urges Gohan to release his anger and fight to protect those he loves, assuring him he has enough power. Cell then crushes Android 16's head, ending the android's peaceful life. Moved by Android 16’s words and enraged by his death, Gohan’s rage erupts and he transforms into Super Saiyan 2. In this new, powerful form, Gohan vows never to forget Cell's crimes. He quickly grabs the Senzu Beans Cell stole from Krillin. Moving at incredible speed, Gohan kills several Cell Juniors effortlessly, rescuing Krillin and impressing Future Trunks with his increased speed and strength. Cell orders all the Juniors to attack at once, but Gohan defeats them without mercy, shocking everyone. After giving the Senzu Beans to Future Trunks to heal the Z Fighters, Gohan prepares to challenge Perfect Cell. As the Z Fighters recover with Senzu Beans and move to a safe distance, Gohan fights Perfect Cell and gains the upper hand. Cell unleashes his full power and lands a heavy punch on Gohan’s face, but Gohan barely reacts and counters with two strong punches to Cell’s stomach and face, severely injuring him. Cell then attacks using techniques from the Z Fighters—Destructo Disc, Special Beam Cannon, and Scatter Shot—but Gohan easily avoids them. Gohan warns Cell not to have pushed him, declaring he will destroy him. Cell flies high and fires a massive Kamehameha to destroy Earth. Gohan counters with an even larger Kamehameha, overpowering Cell’s beam and destroying his legs, left arm, and the two horn-like structures on his head. Goku urges Gohan to finish Cell before he regenerates, but Gohan, furious, wants Cell to suffer and even flashes a psychotic grin. Cell regenerates and transforms into his Powered Up form but fails to hit Gohan, repeating a mistake Future Trunks made. Gohan dodges Cell’s punches and lands two powerful kicks, forcing Cell to regurgitate Android 18 and revert to his Semi-Perfect form. In desperation, Semi-Perfect Cell initiates a self-destruct to destroy Earth. Gohan tries to attack but Cell warns that any hit will cause an immediate explosion. Realizing he cannot stop the blast, Gohan blames himself for not finishing Cell earlier. At the last moment, Goku instant-transmits in front of Cell, tells Gohan he’s proud, and says goodbye. Goku then teleports Cell away to King Kai’s planet, where Cell explodes, killing Goku, King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory. Back on Earth, the Z Fighters mourn Goku’s sacrifice. Gohan, filled with guilt, breaks down while Krillin comforts him. Unknown to them, Cell survives by regenerating from a single cell inside him, gaining power from the Saiyan genes and learning Instant Transmission. He returns as Super Perfect Cell and kills Future Trunks with one blast in front of the shocked Z Fighters. Gohan, determined to avenge his father, welcomes the challenge. Vegeta, enraged by Trunks’ death, transforms into Super Saiyan and attacks Cell with a powerful energy barrage. Cell emerges unharmed, knocks Vegeta aside, and fires a blast at him. Gohan jumps in front of Vegeta, taking the full blast, losing the use of his left arm and most of his power. Super Perfect Cell prepares a massive Kamehameha to finish Gohan, who loses hope after his injury and Cell’s overwhelming power. Suddenly, Goku telepathically contacts Gohan with King Kai’s help, urging him to believe in his strength. When Gohan expresses self-blame, Goku reminds him that Cell is responsible for the destruction. Reinvigorated, Gohan charges a one-handed Kamehameha with Goku’s spiritual assistance. Both Gohan and Cell fire their Kamehamehas, creating a massive Beam Struggle that knocks everyone back. Though Cell initially gains the upper hand, Gohan, aided by Goku’s spirit, pushes back, bringing the struggle to a near stalemate. The Z Fighters (except Vegeta) try to assist by blasting Cell, but he repels them all. As Cell prepares to destroy Gohan, Vegeta regains his confidence and fires a Galick Blazer at Cell’s head, distracting him. Taking advantage, Gohan channels all remaining power into his Kamehameha, obliterating every cell in Cell’s body and ending him once and for all. Exhausted, Gohan reverts to normal and collapses, smiling. Goku’s spirit praises him for saving the world. Afterward, the Z Fighters return to Dende’s Lookout, where Gohan is healed. They summon Shenron with the new Dragon Balls and wish all of Cell’s victims back to life. Goku, however, chooses not to be revived, telepathically explaining that his absence will keep Earth safer and that Gohan has surpassed him. The Z Fighters say their goodbyes and part ways, leaving Earth peaceful once more. Great Saiyaman Saga
On his first day, Gohan reveals his Super Saiyan form to stop a robbery, unintentionally sparking rumors of a new hero known as the "Gold Fighter"—a name inspired by two earlier incidents before his school entrance exam. At school, he meets Videl, the popular crime-fighter and daughter of Mr. Satan, who had taken credit for Cell’s defeat. Gohan must carefully hide his true strength to avoid unwanted attention. Gohan’s secret risks exposure when he forgets to remove his “Gold Fighter” student badge during PE class, displaying superhuman feats that attract suspicion, especially from Videl. She repeatedly confronts Gohan about being the Gold Fighter, but he nervously denies it and evades her attempts to spy on him. Seeking a better disguise, Gohan visits Bulma, who creates a costume for him. While waiting, Gohan greets Trunks, who is training under Vegeta to surpass Gohan. Vegeta warns Gohan not to get complacent. Bulma finishes the disguise, giving Gohan a watch-like device that instantly transforms him into the "Great Saiyaman." Though Trunks teases Gohan for the silly look, Gohan appreciates the anonymity as he flies home on Nimbus, relieved his identity will be better protected while fighting crime. However, during an effort to return a stolen pterodactyl baby to its parents, Gohan accidentally reveals his identity to Videl. She then blackmails him into competing against her in the revived World Martial Arts Tournament to keep his secret. Lacking experience with peers, especially girls, Gohan is outmatched by Videl’s confidence and agrees to teach her how to fly. At Capsule Corporation, Gohan confides in Bulma about Videl’s blackmail. Bulma offers to modify his helmet to disguise his voice, but since helmets aren’t allowed in the tournament, she designs a bandanna and sunglasses combo instead, which still looks ridiculous. Vegeta arrives, declaring his intent to compete, eager to see if his training has made him stronger than Gohan. Meanwhile, Goku contacts them from the Other World, announcing he will also join the tournament using his one-day pass. To make the competition more exciting and reunite with Goku, Gohan invites all his friends to participate, setting the stage for the tournament. World Tournament Saga
The next day, Gohan begins training with his younger brother, Goten. He goes Super Saiyan and practices dodging rocks Goten throws from a marked line. Initially surprised by Goten’s strength, Gohan moves the line back to dodge the throws more easily. When Goten asks if he can go Super Saiyan, Gohan laughs, thinking it’s too soon for him. To Gohan’s shock, Goten effortlessly transforms into a Super Saiyan, breaking the record as the youngest Saiyan to do so. Gohan asks if Goten knows martial arts; Goten says Chi-Chi has been teaching him. When asked if Chi-Chi knows about Goten’s transformation, Goten says she once saw it and called him a punk, which makes Gohan laugh in recognition. As they spar, Gohan evades a kick by flying away, prompting Goten to accuse him of cheating since Goten can’t fly yet. Suddenly, Gohan notices Videl’s plane nearby and warns Goten not to transform in front of her. They rush home, where Goten admires Gohan’s strength. Gohan encourages Goten to train and join the tournament. Goten mentions Trunks is stronger than him, causing Gohan to worry about being left behind. Returning home, they find Chi-Chi and Videl arguing. Gohan sighs, wishing for peaceful training. In the wilderness, Gohan teaches Goten and Videl how to fly, explaining it requires energy control. He learns Videl knows nothing about energy since her father, Mr. Satan, believes it’s a trick. Goten demonstrates by firing a Ki blast, destroying some rocks, which confuses Videl. Gohan starts training her from scratch, and she quickly improves. After lunch with Chi-Chi, Videl floats a little above the ground, impressing Gohan. Goten already flies freely. Gohan tells Videl she’ll soon fly like him, but she insists on returning the next day to train more. Surprised, Gohan agrees. Before Videl leaves, he suggests she cut her hair short for practical fighting reasons. Embarrassed, Videl denies it’s about preference and flies off, only to return the next day with a new haircut. Gohan is baffled by girls. Videl’s ki control steadily improves as she floats higher, while Goten continues to fly easily. Videl promises to come daily until she matches Goten’s skill. Gohan tells Goten to tone down his showing off around her. Videl takes a break, asking Gohan not to tell her father about her learning to fly because she wants it to be a surprise. She also wants to keep her visits to Gohan secret, knowing Mr. Satan won’t allow her to see anyone weaker than him. Gohan grins, realizing Videl underestimates her own strength. Changing the topic, Gohan asks if Videl would be disappointed if her father lost the tournament. She laughs, wanting to see him humbled, which pleases Gohan. Videl asks who trained Gohan, and he says an old friend and his father before his death. Goten accidentally reveals their father is coming back for the tournament, despite Gohan saying he’s dead. Videl misinterprets this, thinking their father divorced their mother and secretly plans to return for the tournament but not tell her. She shrugs it off, and they return to training. After ten days of training, Videl masters flying and ends her lessons with Gohan, allowing both Gohan and Goten to focus fully on their own preparations for the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament and the chance to see their father again. On tournament day, the Dragon Team and their friends fly to the arena aboard Bulma’s plane. Gohan jokes that Goku might not recognize Krillin with his changed hairstyle, making Krillin laugh. Gohan asks Vegeta, Goten, and Trunks not to transform into Super Saiyans during the tournament since the event will be televised, and their battle from before might reveal their identities. Vegeta jokes about destroying the TVs but agrees not to. The boys also agree. At the packed arena, Goku is nowhere to be seen at first, but then lands with Fortuneteller Baba beside him. Emotional reunions follow, with Goten meeting his father for the first time. Piccolo suggests they register quickly, and Trunks and Goten must enter the Junior Division, which is for fighters under fifteen. There are 194 participants in the preliminaries (excluding the Junior Division), but only sixteen spots available. Mr. Satan, as reigning champion, is guaranteed entry. The other fifteen places are decided by a Punch Machine, where contestants must hit the highest scores to qualify. Mr. Satan demonstrates his punch, claiming no one can beat him, but Krillin smugly disagrees. Piccolo telekinetically destroys the cameras to protect Gohan’s secret identity, delighting Gohan. Gohan splits from the group to find Videl while the punch machine event proceeds. Goku, Krillin, Android 18, and Piccolo each tap the machine lightly, scoring in the 200s. Vegeta punches so hard the machine is destroyed. Videl questions Gohan about the high scores, noting her father’s record was only 139. Goku suggests he and Vegeta watch the Junior Division matches while the rest of the participants wait for another machine. Videl expresses surprise at how well Gohan knows the group, and he explains the man in the orange gi is his father, who died—hence the halo over his head—astonishing Videl. The Junior Division begins while Gohan and Videl wait for their chance on the punch machine. They watch as Trunks and Goten fight. Goku and Gohan are impressed by their strength. Trunks uses an underhanded tactic to defeat Goten and earns the right to fight Mr. Satan in a special exhibition match. The veterans leave, expecting an easy fight, while Gohan stays with Videl, who is shocked they plan not to watch the fight. Later, Gohan and Videl find Goku and friends eating lunch, where the Saiyans display their enormous appetites. After eating, the group heads to draw lots to determine the order of fights. On the way, they encounter two unusual newcomers: a tall, quiet man and a small, floating man with spiky hair. Piccolo and Goku are surprised, and Videl comments on the floating. The small man greets Goku, having heard of him, and says he hopes to fight Goku and shake his hand afterward, praising Goku’s good soul. The pair leave, and Goku suspects the tournament will be tougher than expected. Krillin is unimpressed, but Piccolo wonders why aliens would come to Earth for the tournament. Videl asks about aliens, and Gohan whispers that Piccolo’s strange appearance is part of it, which she believes. At the drawing, Gohan is matched against Kibito in the fourth fight. Goku warns Gohan not to underestimate him. During the tournament, Krillin wins easily. Piccolo surprisingly loses to Shin, shocking everyone. In the third match, Videl fights Spopovich but is nearly beaten to death. Gohan watches in anger as his friend is mercilessly attacked. Despite pleas, Videl refuses to give up. Seeing the brutal beating, Gohan turns Super Saiyan and tries to intervene, but Yamu interrupts, ordering Spopovich to finish the match because more important matters await. Spopovich kicks Videl out of the ring and leaves with Yamu, while Gohan promises he’ll defeat Spopovich next time. Goku quickly uses Instant Transmission to head to Korin Tower for Senzu Beans. Gohan takes Videl to the infirmary, where Mr. Satan soon arrives to check on her. Mr. Satan worries his daughter is dating a “wuss” like Gohan. The announcer states Videl is out of danger and prepares to start the fourth match. Gohan rushes out asking for a delay because they are bringing special medicine for Videl. Goku returns with three Senzu Beans, and Gohan asks Kibito to wait a bit longer. In the medical room, Gohan tells Videl to eat a Senzu Bean. The doctor protests giving strange food to patients, but Videl says since it’s Gohan, strange things might happen. Mr. Satan tells her to spit it out, but she chews it anyway. With Videl fully healed, Gohan returned to the tournament and found himself matched against Kibito. After his classmates cheer for him in the stadium, Gohan realizes he is completely exposed without his cape and turban, sighing as he tosses away his sunglasses. To force Shin and Kibito to locate Babidi's spaceship, they trick Gohan into transforming into a Super Saiyan. However, Gohan surprises everyone by revealing a form beyond Super Saiyan — Super Saiyan 2 — shocking the crowd and exposing himself as the mysterious Gold Fighter. At that moment, Yamu and Spopovich jump into the ring. When Gohan prepares to attack, Shin paralyzes him. Yamu and Spopovich then steal Gohan's energy, causing him to revert to his normal state before flying away with the two villains. Shin and the other Z Fighters give chase. Kibito heals Gohan, restoring his energy, and explains they must pursue Spopovich and Yamu to find Babidi's spaceship. Gohan, Kibito, and Videl fly off to rendezvous with the Z Fighters and Supreme Kai. Kibito recounts a story of a powerful wizard and a demon. Long ago, the evil mage Bibidi created Majin Buu, a mindless creature born solely to destroy. Majin Buu annihilated hundreds of planets and killed four of the five Supreme Kais, who possessed power enough to defeat foes like Frieza in a single blow. Bibidi eventually lost control and sealed Buu inside a magic ball, transporting it across planets, intending Earth as the next target. Before Buu's seal could be broken, Shin killed Bibidi. The sealed ball remained intact on Earth, undisturbed to avoid unnecessary risk. Recently, they learned Bibidi had a son named Babidi on Earth, who aims to revive Majin Buu. Babidi must gather pure energy to break the seal. Kibito reveals they allowed Spopovich and Yamu to attack Gohan, triggering his Super Saiyan transformation so they could track the villains and locate the spaceship. After some flying, Videl grows tired and decides to return to the World Tournament, recognizing the fight ahead is beyond her ability. Before leaving, she and Gohan discuss the identity of the Gold Fighter, confirming it is Gohan himself. Videl concludes that seven years earlier, at the Cell Games, Gohan—not Mr. Satan—was the golden-haired boy who defeated Cell. They part ways, with Videl hinting at her growing feelings for Gohan. Later, Gohan and Kibito meet Shin and the Z Fighters near Babidi's spaceship. They land on a nearby hill, suppressing their Ki to avoid detection. From their vantage point, they observe Spopovich and Yamu speaking to Pui Pui and realize Babidi has hidden his ship underground, likely aware of their presence. Piccolo suggests attacking before Majin Buu's resurrection, but Shin advises patience, predicting Babidi will release Buu outside the ship. Gohan spots a slaughtered family nearby, fueling his anger. Suddenly, Babidi and Dabura emerge. Kibito and Shin panic, realizing Babidi has taken control of Dabura, king of the Demon Realm. Goku recognizes Dabura as the large figure and learns he is the ruler of the Dark Demon Realm, the strongest being there. Krillin grows worried as Gohan identifies the smaller figure as Babidi. Shin explains Babidi, though physically weak, commands powerful magic that controls others through their evil hearts, making Dabura an ideal subordinate. Only those without evil in their hearts, like the Z Fighters, can oppose Babidi. Shin admits they had not expected Dabura’s presence. Vegeta confidently declares Majin Buu will not be revived because he will stop them. Goku tells Krillin to leave for safety, and Krillin agrees. When Yamu and Spopovich give their stolen energy to Babidi, he kills them in retaliation. Babidi and Dabura detect the Z Fighters nearby and plot to lure them into the spaceship by killing the weaker fighters and draining their energy. Dabura attacks, killing Kibito with an Evil Impulse blast. After a brief fight, Dabura spits on Krillin and Piccolo, turning them to stone before retreating. Shin reveals Krillin and Piccolo can only be restored if Dabura dies. Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta pursue Dabura with a reluctant Shin. Inside the spaceship, the group learns they must defeat three fighters to destroy Babidi and escape. The first opponent, Pui Pui, appears. To decide who fights first, Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta play Rock-Paper-Scissors; Vegeta wins and steps forward. Pui Pui warns that any damage taken will be converted into energy for Majin Buu. Vegeta overwhelms Pui Pui without transforming. Babidi teleports the room to Pui Pui’s homeworld, Zoon, hoping its heavy gravity will give Pui Pui an advantage, but Vegeta’s gravity training makes him immune. Vegeta finishes Pui Pui with a Double Galick Cannon. After Pui Pui’s defeat, the group moves forward. Goku grows impatient, while Vegeta contemplates destroying the floor, but Shin warns against disturbing Majin Buu. Vegeta speculates that Majin Buu is likely insignificant, like Dabura, and Goku agrees, comparing Dabura’s strength to Cell’s from seven years prior. At level two, Babidi sends Yakon to drain energy from the three Saiyans, and Goku takes on the giant green beast. Babidi cautiously transports them to Yakon's homeworld, Planet Ankoku—a pitch-black, dark world fitting its name. Yakon assumes he has the advantage as a nocturnal native, but he soon realizes Goku’s skill is formidable. Despite the darkness, Goku senses Yakon’s movements without needing sight. Transforming into a Super Saiyan, Goku illuminates the surroundings, but Yakon begins to absorb his energy, forcing Goku back to base form. Gohan yells to his father to avoid the Super Saiyan form since Yakon feeds on light energy. Yakon confirms this but eagerly wants more light. Goku tricks Yakon into absorbing a second burst of light energy, this time showing a hint of Super Saiyan 2 power. Yakon swallows too much and is obliterated. With Yakon defeated, the group advances to level three. While waiting, Goku asks Gohan if he has trained enough since his fight is next. Vegeta claims Gohan has grown weaker during peace and that he and Goku now surpass him. However, Vegeta notes that if Gohan lost his temper like during the Cell Games, he could unlock his full strength. The door opens, and Dabura—the last and strongest of Babidi’s fighters—enters. He praises their progress but doubts they can defeat him. Vegeta comments that Babidi must be desperate to send Dabura so soon. Dabura laughs and challenges them to attack. Gohan insists he will defeat Dabura and demands Babidi transport them elsewhere. Dabura chooses a world similar to Earth, and they are transported to a mountainous region to battle. Initially, Gohan is rusty against Dabura due to his lack of training after the Cell Games. However, after transforming into Super Saiyan 2, Gohan fights Dabura evenly. Dabura uses his Evil Flame repeatedly, all of which Gohan dodges. When Gohan attacks, Dabura employs the Afterimage Technique to create distance and strikes with an Evil Impulse blast, sending Gohan into nearby water. Gohan resurfaces and discards his tattered Great Saiyaman clothes, leaving only black tights. As Gohan charges again, Dabura spits at him, but Gohan blocks with his glove, which quickly turns to stone; he tosses it away. Dabura conjures a sword and attempts to cut Gohan, but Gohan catches and snaps the blade. Vegeta grows frustrated at Gohan’s lack of motivation, believing he has reached his peak. Blinded by anger, Vegeta declares he will end the fight himself, but Goku reminds him it is still Gohan’s turn and he has not lost. Vegeta counters that he doesn’t care about Babidi or his minions, only wanting to settle his rivalry with Goku. Dabura senses Vegeta’s frustration and interrupts the fight to report this to Babidi. Gohan asks why Dabura is fleeing, but Dabura replies he’s found another warrior for Babidi. Gohan, Goku, Shin, and Vegeta wonder who Dabura means. Vegeta berates Gohan, claiming he’s weak and should have defeated Dabura by now. Goku defends Gohan, but Vegeta yells at him as well and threatens to destroy the ship. Shin intervenes, but Vegeta threatens him too until Goku grabs his hand and commands him not to destroy the ship. Vegeta grudgingly agrees. Shin realizes Vegeta is the new fighter Dabura mentioned. Babidi’s dark magic takes over Vegeta’s mind, transforming him into Majin Vegeta and unleashing the evil within him. Babidi transports them to the World Tournament arena, where Majin Vegeta wrecks parts of the stadium and kills many to provoke Goku into fighting him. Goku insists they fight somewhere without innocent bystanders. Shin attempts to stop their duel, arguing the universe’s fate outweighs their rivalry, and steps between the Saiyans. Goku threatens Shin with a Ki Blast, shocking everyone, including Vegeta. Seeing intervention is useless, Shin steps aside. Goku apologizes, and the four are transported to a rocky canyon. Shin tells Goku and Gohan they must handle Babidi and Dabura, while he fights Vegeta. Although reluctant, Shin agrees they must break through the ship to reach Babidi. Babidi orders Majin Vegeta to kill Shin, but Vegeta refuses, stating that Babidi may control his mind but never his Saiyan pride. At Dabura’s suggestion, Babidi opens the door for Shin to avoid risking Majin Buu’s premature resurrection. Before descending the hole, Goku gives Gohan one of the last two Senzu Beans and instructs him to eat it and get angry like he did fighting Cell to unlock his full power—then no one could defeat him. Gohan apologizes for the timing, knowing this is his one-day return to Earth, and bids farewell to Goku as he and Shin enter the spaceship to face Babidi. After swiftly defeating minor henchmen, Gohan and Shin reach the bottom where Babidi, Dabura, and the sealed Majin Buu ball await. Shin and Babidi exchange barbed remarks, and Babidi orders a fight with Gohan. Babidi suggests all return to the surface since Majin Buu will soon be fully powered and could destroy the ship on emergence. Shin agrees but vows to prevent that. Suddenly, they are transported outside with Majin Buu’s sealed ball. Babidi asks Dabura if he thinks Gohan can be defeated. Dabura confirms Gohan’s strength after witnessing his skills. Remembering Goku’s advice, Gohan powers up to Super Saiyan and tries to get angry. Babidi boasts he won’t be defeated like his father since he has greater magic and Dabura at his side. The meter on Majin Buu’s ball begins beeping, indicating it’s full. Babidi’s excitement rises. Shin is shocked at how much damage Goku must have already taken. Gohan realizes Goku and Vegeta are likely fighting at levels beyond Super Saiyan, explaining the tremendous damage done. Majin Buu's cocoon begins to emit thick smoke and steam, causing Dabura and Babidi to grin with anticipation for the revival of Bibidi's original creation. Gohan and Shin watch in horror as the cocoon cracks open. The Supreme Kai orders Gohan to flee, warning that they cannot stand against the legendary Majin Buu once he is released. Gohan, however, refuses to run, determined not to disappoint his father or repeat the mistakes he made during the Cell Games. Firing a relentless Electric Kamehameha barrage, Gohan tries to obliterate the cocoon and destroy Majin Buu before he emerges, but the cocoon remains unharmed. Eventually, the steaming stops and the cocoon hatches—but nothing appears inside. Shin speculates that after being sealed for millions of years, Majin Buu must have weakened significantly, and Gohan’s attack was enough to destroy him. Babidi growls in frustration, suspecting the Supreme Kai might be right. Shin advises Gohan to get angry, defeat Dabura, and leave Babidi to him, confident that once done, order will be restored. However, Gohan knows the truth: something did come out of the cocoon. The steam and smoke rising from it begin to coalesce in the sky, forming a large, pink, rotund creature—Majin Buu has indeed been revived. Majin Buu
Babidi attempts to command Majin Buu, but the creature playfully ignores him, even frightening the wizard with a grotesque face. This behavior leaves Gohan perplexed. Dabura, growing impatient, insults Buu by calling him a fat, stupid loser. Enraged by the insult, Buu attacks Dabura—blinding him by punching his eyes and kicking him into a nearby mountain—shocking everyone present. Babidi praises Buu’s impressive strength, while Gohan and Shin look on in despair, terrified by Buu’s unpredictable power. Gohan suggests that if Babidi were killed, Buu’s threat might diminish due to his childish nature. Shin disagrees, reminding Gohan that Babidi alone can seal Buu back into his ball. He explains that their only hope is that Babidi eventually grows tired of Buu’s disobedience and reseals him. Frustrated, Shin blames himself for underestimating the threat and admits that had he known mortals stronger than himself existed, he would have pursued an alternative plan. Gohan grows curious, but Shin says it’s too late and they will not survive Buu’s wrath. Babidi regains control over Buu by threatening to reseal him and orders Buu to kill Gohan and Shin. Grabbing Shin’s hand, Gohan flees, hoping to outpace Buu until they find safety. But Buu instantly appears before them, mocking Gohan, who is shocked by Buu’s speed. Buu swats Gohan out of the air into the rocks. Shin is horrified as Buu advances on him. Shin uses a Kiai attack to defend himself, barely pushing Buu back. Buu responds by brutally beating the Supreme Kai as Gohan helplessly watches. Babidi arrives and mocks Shin’s vulnerable state, deciding to finish him off personally. Before Babidi can strike, Gohan intervenes with a swift kick to Buu’s face, surprising the wizard. Unfazed, Buu quickly heals the dent. Babidi growls in frustration at the delay. Gohan, fearful as his attack caused no lasting harm, prepares to fight as Buu angrily declares that Gohan will die now. Gohan charges forward, but Buu fires a massive energy sphere, blasting Gohan high into the sky before flying out of sight. Babidi hopes Gohan disappears from the planet entirely. With his last strength, Shin uses psychic powers to destroy the attack, but Gohan falls unconscious and near death in a forest. The sudden drop in energy leads characters like Goku and Vegeta to mistakenly believe Gohan was killed by Majin Buu. Kibito, revived by the Dragon Balls, locates and heals Shin. Together, they find Gohan and bring him to the Sacred World of the Kai for treatment. Upon awakening, Gohan wonders where he is. Hearing the location, he assumes he’s dead but notices he lacks a halo. Shin assures him it was a close call, but he survived Buu’s attack. Kibito explains that originally no mortals, guardians, or low-ranking Kais could enter the sacred land. Gohan recalls that Kibito should have been killed by Dabura and asks how he survived. Kibito admits he doesn’t know how he was revived. Shin tells Gohan he wants him to wield the legendary Z Sword to defeat Majin Buu. Kibito panics, insisting no mortal or previous Supreme Kai has been able to use it. Shin replies that he underestimates how incredible Gohan’s power is, especially considering he was dead. Determined, the three set off to find the Z Sword. As they fly through the Sacred World of the Kai, Gohan admires the stunning landscape, remarking it reminds him of Mount Paozu. Kibito tells him his tattered clothes are inappropriate for the sacred land and magically grants him a uniform like his own. Shin approves of the new look, though Gohan feels awkward resembling Kibito. They land atop a tall, thin plateau where the legendary Z Sword is embedded in the ground, only the hilt visible. Shin asks Gohan to try pulling it out, noting no one has succeeded before. Gohan recalls an old Earth story and asks what happens if he succeeds. Kibito says the wielder gains immense power, likely enough to defeat Majin Buu—but assures Gohan he won’t pull it out. Ignoring Kibito, Gohan pulls with all his might but fails. In pain, he stops, and Kibito smirks. Gohan then transforms into a Super Saiyan (or Super Saiyan 2 in the anime) and tries again. Though difficult, the sword slowly budges and finally comes free, shocking Kibito and delighting Shin. Back on the ground, Gohan—no longer transformed—says the sword feels heavy and doubts it holds much power. Kibito insists the power depends on the wielder’s ability. Gohan hands Kibito the sword, who immediately drops it, denting the ground. Nervous, Kibito insists the wielder must control it freely. Meanwhile, on Earth, Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 3 to battle Innocent Buu, shaking the planet with his power. Gohan senses the overwhelming ki and Shin confirms it’s Goku. Kibito is amazed such power reaches their sacred land. Gohan wonders what’s happening on Earth. Shin comments the fight may be one Goku cannot win and that defeating Buu rests on Gohan mastering the Z Sword. Gohan resumes training, while Kibito doubts Gohan can wield the sword, given previous Supreme Kais’ failures. As Gohan trains, Shin notes his improved control over the sword. Gohan recalls his father’s continual training in the Other World and resolves to grow stronger, no matter how little, since Buu still threatens. Meanwhile, Goku returns to the afterlife and immediately seeks out Gohan. Learning from King Yemma that Gohan is alive, Goku teleports to the Sacred World of the Kai and is shocked to see Gohan training with the Z Sword, dressed in Supreme Kai robes alongside Shin and Kibito. Kibito panics at another mortal on their holy ground. Gohan asks why Goku is there since his 24 hours aren’t up. Goku explains everything since Gohan’s disappearance. After some reflection on Buu’s destruction, Goku asks if Gohan can hold the sword and tests its weight by swinging it. Goku requests to stay until Gohan confronts Buu and asks for food. Shin asks if Gohan wants to rest, and they all head off. Gohan compliments Goku’s Super Saiyan 3 form, and Goku offers to teach him the transformation after they eat. The next day, impressed by Gohan’s progress, Goku tests the sword by throwing a huge boulder, which Gohan slices in half effortlessly. Shin summons a dense cube of Katchin metal for a tougher test. When Goku throws it, the Z Sword snaps in two. Everyone is shocked. Goku blames Shin, but Shin says the sword was meant to hold immense power. Gohan doubts the legend, dropping the broken blade. Gohan brightens, noting his physical strength increased by wielding the heavy sword, likely the source of its power. Shin agrees, though Goku worries it may not be enough to defeat Buu. Suddenly, an old man in Supreme Kai attire appears, claiming to be a Supreme Kai from fifteen generations ago, stunning Shin and Kibito. The Old Kai says a long-ago villain—less terrible than Buu—sealed him inside the Z Sword out of fear of his "fearsomeness." (Later, it’s revealed he referred to Beerus the Destroyer and likely exaggerated to impress.) Goku skeptically fires a blast at Old Kai, hitting him in the face and knocking him down. Shin and Kibito rush to help as Old Kai angrily curses Goku, who dismisses him as a hot-tempered old man. Old Kai says the villain feared his abilities, not his strength. Goku is curious, but Old Kai refuses to reveal more, childish sticking out his tongue. Goku jokes, offering adult magazines for information. Old Kai claims he can see girls undress with his godly eyes, embarrassing Shin and Kibito. Goku then offers a chance to grope a real woman, and Old Kai eagerly agrees. Gohan is curious, so Goku says once back on Earth, Gohan can ask Videl. Gohan angrily refuses. Goku relents, suggesting an older woman instead and asks Gohan to explain to Bulma, but Gohan insists he can’t. Goku asks if Old Kai’s ability can defeat Buu. Old Kai says it’s not guaranteed, but likely. Goku jokes that saving the universe may only require “a little feeling up,” while Gohan protests it’s sexual harassment and he’d be killed by Bulma. Goku ignores him and shakes Old Kai’s hand in agreement. Old Kai explains his unique ability to Gohan: he can unlock anyone’s hidden potential, pushing them far beyond their natural limits. Goku mentions he already knows about such powers and that it’s common, but Old Kai insists no one else can unlock potential beyond limits like he can. Looking at Gohan, the one who pulled the Z Sword from the rock, Old Kai says he can surely make someone who could wield that sword into the universe’s strongest. Though, he had hoped the one who freed him would be a Supreme Kai, not a mortal. Shin quietly apologizes for his weakness. Old Kai instructs Gohan to stand still and begins dancing around him. Confused, Gohan asks why, but Old Kai says it’s an important ritual and demands silence. Goku asks how long it will take; Old Kai replies five hours for the ritual and twenty more for the power-up. Goku decides to nap while Kibito and Shin watch. Frustrated, Gohan must stay still and wait for the next twenty-five hours. After finishing the dance ritual, Old Kai sits and tells Gohan he can rest too. Shin wakes Goku and praises Old Kai. Goku asks if Gohan feels stronger, but Old Kai says it will take twenty hours before Gohan notices. Gohan complains but agrees to meditate and endure the process. Later, Gohan peeks open his eyes and yells at Old Kai, who insists he’s awake and commands silence, then dozes off again. Gohan wonders if it’s hopeless. Meanwhile, in the anime, Old Kai watches women’s aerobics on TV and asks about Bulma’s looks for his upcoming “favor” from Gohan, embarrassing Shin and Kibito. Suddenly, Shin senses danger on Earth: Innocent Buu splits into good and evil halves and merges into a stronger form. This new Majin Buu attacks the Dragon Team at The Lookout with the Human Extinction Attack, killing many. Gohan grows impatient as Old Kai laughs at comics instead of unlocking his power. When Gohan says the ritual should have ended hours ago, Old Kai says Gohan has much untapped potential. Losing patience, Gohan powers up, illuminating the Supreme Kai planet, demonstrating some unlocked power. He apologizes and resumes the ritual. Later, Goku comments that Majin Buu’s energy vanished; Shin notices it too. Kibito wonders if Buu is dead. Goku says he doesn’t know and can’t sense Buu’s energy, but they never fought. Old Kai reveals Buu and Piccolo have been battling in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Goku wonders why. Then Goku sees Buu’s energy return, meaning he escaped the chamber, but Gotenks has not. Wanting to see, Old Kai gives Goku and Shin a Crystal Ball to observe. Through the ball, Goku watches in shock as Buu turns everyone at the Lookout into chocolate and eats them. Gohan asks what’s happening, but Goku tells him to focus on the ritual. When Gotenks’ fusion time ends, Goku urges Old Kai to hurry; the boys are defenseless against Super Buu. Old Kai says Gohan’s done unlocking power for five minutes and can leave. Gohan asks why he didn’t say earlier. Old Kai says it’s more dramatic this way. Gohan asks how to tap into his hidden power. Old Kai says to power up like a Super Saiyan, but his appearance won’t change; his strength will soar. Shin says they must hurry to Earth, but Kibito offers to take Gohan alone, saying the others would slow him down and will leave after escorting him. Goku feels bad he can’t go himself and laments missing watching Gohan grow up. He says they won’t meet again until Gohan dies and visits the Other World. They share a heartfelt hug. On Earth, Gohan asks Kibito for clothes like his father’s to honor him. Kibito promises to pray for him from the Sacred World of the Kai, and Gohan sends regards to the Supreme Kais. With his power unlocked and the world’s fate resting on him, Gohan flies off to face Super Buu. Arriving at the battlefield, Gohan finds Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo, who reveal Super Buu killed and ate their friends and family. Gohan grows angry but senses Dende’s faint energy, meaning the Dragon Balls can still be used. Enraged, Gohan approaches Buu, who mocks him. Gohan declares he will kill Buu. Super Buu scoffs, claiming he’s already beaten Gohan and will do so again. Gohan powers up, surpassing Buu, and assaults him with a powerful Burst Rush attack, shocking Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo. No matter Buu’s attacks, Gohan dodges and blocks with ease. Super Buu suddenly realizes it was Gohan whose energy he sensed earlier, concluding Gohan was preparing to fight him, and decides he can’t allow anyone to surpass his power. Gohan mocks Buu’s arrogance, confidently stating he cannot be defeated. In a desperate move, Super Buu tries to self-destruct to take Gohan down with him, but Gohan anticipates this, grabbing Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks and flying away before the explosion hits. At a safe distance, Gohan notes that Buu didn’t die and wasn’t aiming to kill him either; otherwise, the planet would have been destroyed. Piccolo senses no energy from Buu, but Gohan suspects he is hiding it and planning something. Trunks reassures that even if Buu is alive, Gohan can handle him, comparing his strength to Super Gotenks. Goten insists he’s stronger, with Trunks conceding maybe a little. Piccolo asks how Gohan became so powerful, and Gohan explains Old Kai’s ritual. Gohan then asks who has the Dragon Radar. Trunks says Piccolo does, but Piccolo explains that with Dende dead, the Dragon Balls are useless. Gohan points out he sensed faint ki — Dende’s — so they fly off to find him before Buu can regenerate. On the way, they encounter a worn-out Mr. Satan and his dog Bee wandering the desert. Trunks suggests leaving him, but Piccolo insists on bringing him along, acknowledging his efforts to stop Buu. Piccolo carries Mr. Satan while Goten holds Bee. Piccolo wonders why only Dende survived since Buu had time to kill him. Gohan recalls Goku saying Piccolo and Gotenks left the Time Chamber soon after Buu, so Buu had limited time due to time dilation. Piccolo realizes he’d been mistaken; only ten seconds passed in that dimension. Soon, they find Dende, excited to see everyone. Dende explains Mr. Popo threw him off the Lookout when Buu escaped to keep him alive. Piccolo thanks Mr. Popo for his quick thinking. After an hour, they sense Super Buu approaching. Gohan vows to finish him, warning the others to avoid getting caught. Curious about Buu’s new plan, Gohan watches as a confident Super Buu arrives, seeming unchanged. Trunks thinks Buu will just run again, but Buu demands to fight the boys first. Gohan insists he’s the opponent, but Buu provokes the boys’ egos, calling them scared and fragile. Humiliated, Trunks and Goten foolishly decide to fuse again despite Piccolo’s suspicion. Arrogantly, Trunks dismisses Buu’s intelligence, confident he has no plan. Against Piccolo’s advice, they quickly perform Fusion, becoming Super Saiyan 3 Gotenks. Falling into Buu’s trap, Gotenks and Piccolo are absorbed as Buu uses severed parts of his body to envelop them. Super Buu quickly transforms, extending his head tentacle down to his knees like Super Saiyan 3 hair, donning Gotenks’ vest. He taunts Gohan as the strongest Majin, but Gohan calls him a coward for sneaking up. Buu explains sensing Gohan’s power, he planned to absorb Gotenks to become the strongest, stalling for an hour to absorb the boys at full strength due to fusion’s time limit. Gohan mocks Buu’s stupidity, saying it would be smarter to absorb him instead. Buu counters that there’s no point being strongest without worthy opponents, and killing Gohan is his motivation. He promises a quick end due to Gotenks’ time limit and gloats about absorbing Piccolo too. The battle begins evenly, but Buu soon plays mind games, wearing Gohan down. Using Piccolo’s intelligence, Buu taunts and torments Gohan. In the manga, Gohan never lands a blow after the absorption; in the anime, the fight starts close before Gohan tires. Buu searches for hiding Gohan, taunting him for masking his energy. Enraged, Gohan attacks with a kick, but Buu dodges and counters, kicking Gohan into the air. Buu traps him with Gotenks’ Super Donut Chain, mocking him. Buu prepares a Kamehameha, but Gohan breaks free and dodges, impressing Buu. Gohan hides, but Buu tracks and taunts him relentlessly. Attacking again, Gohan fires a blast, which Buu reflects, causing a massive explosion visible from space. Buu dives underground to find Gohan, stating he has ten minutes to entertain him, then pummels him ruthlessly. Gohan is sent flying, badly injured. Dende heals him as Buu prepares to finish the fight. Gohan recovers and stands, but Buu dismisses the healing as delaying the inevitable. Buu attacks with a Kiai, then targets Dende, firing a blast. Mr. Satan tries to stop it with his gun but fails. Tien Shinhan arrives, redirecting the blast with a Tri-Beam, saving Dende and Mr. Satan. Gohan is shocked, and Tien praises his growth, though acknowledging Buu is stronger. Super Buu charges a planet-destroying attack, daring anyone to stop him. At the last moment, Goku appears, revived and equipped with Potara Earrings. He throws a Destructo Disc, slicing Buu in half and cutting off the tip of his head tentacle. Gohan wonders how Goku returned to life. Buu recognizes Goku from their previous fight and claims it’s useless since he’s stronger now. Goku grins, confident with a new special item to defeat Buu, shocking Gohan. Meanwhile, Buu’s severed lower half stands and kicks Tien, knocking him out. Buu reunites his body and mocks Tien as a minor threat, doubting Goku can harm or kill him. Suddenly, Goku yells to Gohan and tosses him the other Potara earring, but Gohan isn’t paying attention and misses it. The earring falls between some rocks, frustrating Goku. He urges Gohan to find it quickly and put it on his right ear so they can fuse and defeat Buu. However, Buu dismisses the fusion as useless and insists he’ll kill Goku first. Goku begs for a moment while Gohan searches through the rocks. Buu charges at Goku, who transforms into Super Saiyan 3 and prepares to fight. Just as Gohan finds the Potara earring, Super Buu stops his attack and begins transforming again, this time resembling Piccolo. Goku laughs, assuming Piccolo’s consciousness is dominant since Goten and Trunks have defused. Disappointed, Goku powers down, knowing now only Gohan can defeat Buu. Buu smirks and reveals an insurance plan: the severed piece of his head tentacle, left after Goku cut him in half, turns into a blob that envelops Gohan. Buu absorbs Gohan, gaining more power than he had when absorbing Gotenks. Later, Goku and Vegeta—who have fused into Vegito to fight Super Buu—enter Buu’s body to rescue their friends and family. Inside, they find Goten, Trunks, Piccolo, and Gohan trapped in pods with only their heads visible. Using small energy beams, Goku and Vegeta break the pods, causing Buu to revert to his earlier, weaker forms. They also discover Fat Buu sealed inside a pod and release him. The Saiyan duo then escapes Buu’s body with the freed fighters. However, this triggers Super Buu’s final transformation into Kid Buu, his purest and most dangerous form. Kid Buu, wild and completely evil, casually charges a blast capable of destroying Earth. Goku quickly teleports Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, and Trunks to safety. He notices Mr. Satan and Dende on the surface and tries to save them too but runs out of time. Suddenly, Kibito Kai teleports to Earth, grabbing Goku’s hand and teleporting all of them—including Dende, Mr. Satan, and Bee—back to the Sacred World of the Kai. Unconscious and defenseless, Gohan and the others are killed when Kid Buu destroys Earth. However, they are soon revived alongside the planet by Porunga. With help from King Kai, Vegeta telepathically urges everyone on Earth to raise their hands and give energy to Goku’s Super Spirit Bomb. Though many are reluctant, Mr. Satan convinces the people to trust Goku, and the energy is gathered. Goku launches the Super Spirit Bomb, finally obliterating Kid Buu. Afterward, Gohan asks Piccolo if Buu is truly gone. Piccolo confirms he can no longer sense Buu’s energy. Gohan, Goten, and Trunks cheer the victory. The group travels to The Lookout to reunite with loved ones. Soon, Goku, Vegeta, Dende, Mr. Satan, Bee, and Good Buu arrive at The Lookout, greeted warmly. Trunks readies an attack on Good Buu, but Goku stops him, explaining this Majin Buu is now good. Goku apologizes for his long absence and explains Old Kai revived him to remain on Earth permanently. Overjoyed, Chi-Chi asks if they can now live as a family. When Goku affirms, she breaks into tears, hugging and being comforted by him. Six months later, Goku uses the Dragon Balls to erase the public’s memories of Majin Buu’s destruction, sparing only the Dragon Team and close friends. This allows Good Buu to live peacefully on Earth with new companions. Eventually, Gohan and Videl marry and move into a home built for them by Mr. Satan. God of Destruction Beerus Saga
Away from the crowd, Gohan shares some quiet moments with Videl. During the party, Beerus and Whis arrive, and the guests applaud and chant Beerus’s name. When Majin Buu and Beerus unexpectedly clash, blowing Mr. Satan away, Gohan and Videl rush to assist him. After Beerus defeats both Buu and Gotenks effortlessly, Gohan attempts to intervene but is quickly knocked out when Beerus strikes him using Buu’s body. Goku steps in to prevent Beerus from destroying Earth. During a group summoning of Shenron, they learn the method to create a Super Saiyan God. Gohan joins the other Saiyans in holding hands, trying to transform Goku. When the ritual fails, Beerus again threatens Earth, aiming a destructive attack at the group. Videl steps in to protect them, despite Gohan’s protests. After she reveals she is pregnant, Gohan grows excited at the prospect of becoming a father and argues with his father, wondering if Videl’s pregnancy might be key to their survival. Golden Frieza Saga
Gohan notices Goku preparing to leave with Whis for training, so he asks Chi-Chi to try to stop him. When Goku is about to go, Gohan arrives with Chi-Chi and Goten, arguing that Goku must get stronger to protect Earth. Chi-Chi stands firm but later admits relief when Goku leaves, knowing he’ll return when hungry. Gohan and Videl leave Piccolo to babysit Pan. When Frieza is revived, Gohan notices Piccolo’s concern about a strange power nearby. Four months later, upon hearing news of Frieza’s return, Gohan joins Piccolo, Master Roshi, Krillin, and Tien Shinhan to confront Frieza and his army. Gohan mentions Goten and Trunks won’t join due to Bulma’s request to avoid reckless behavior. He also says Buu won’t appear because he’s asleep and hard to wake. Though Gohan hasn’t trained much, he believes he can still go Super Saiyan. During battle, Gohan confronts Shisami, firing blasts but gets caught in a bear hug. Calmly, Gohan explains he must protect his child and the peace. Before Gohan can react, Tagoma kills Shisami and seriously wounds Gohan. His heart stops, but Piccolo revives him with a kiai blast, and Krillin gives him a Senzu Bean. Piccolo fights Tagoma but struggles, and Gohan helps by blasting Tagoma. The attack doesn’t hurt Tagoma, who has endured Frieza’s pain and gained steel-like durability. Suddenly, Gotenks appears and attacks Tagoma. Then Captain Ginyu switches bodies with Tagoma and overwhelms the Z Fighters. Gohan fights Captain Ginyu, struggling due to lack of training. He transforms into Super Saiyan, lands several hits, and spares Ginyu. Frieza grows furious, reminding Gohan of when Goku spared him on Namek, and vows to torture him. Frieza shoots Gohan multiple times with Death Beams, leaving him near death. When Frieza fires a fatal blast, Piccolo sacrifices himself to save Gohan, dying again. Devastated, Gohan regrets not training and being too weak to protect Piccolo and family. Krillin comforts him, assuring that prioritizing family isn’t wrong. Frieza threatens Videl and Pan, pushing Gohan to vow to stop him, powering up fully. Bulma contacts Whis, who gathers Beerus, Goku, and Vegeta to locate Earth. Goku can’t sense anyone, so Whis shows him Gohan’s image. Gohan’s rage grows as he powers up, ignoring friends’ attempts to calm him, including Goten and Trunks. Beerus praises Gohan’s power output, noting Goku should sense it by now. Vegeta criticizes Goku’s inability to sense Gohan. Finally, Gohan’s Super Saiyan power surges, darkening the sky and alerting Goku and Vegeta. However, Gohan’s injured body can’t sustain the form, forcing him out of Super Saiyan, leaving him vulnerable. Frieza laughs and fires a Death Beam, but Goku and Vegeta arrive just in time, blocking the attack and rescuing Gohan. Though disappointed in himself, Gohan receives praise from Goku and Vegeta for his power and courage. Goku entrusts Gohan to Krillin, who heals him with a Senzu Bean. Gohan retreats with Krillin, leaving the fight to Goku. Gohan watches the battle between Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza. After Frieza destroys Earth, Whis protects Gohan and the others and reverses time, allowing Goku to defeat Frieza and send him to Hell. Afterwards, Gohan reunites with Videl and Pan, promising to protect them. Later, at a party with the Z Fighters, Gohan talks with Piccolo, acknowledging his need to train and asking for guidance. Piccolo agrees, advising Gohan to restore his weakened body first. Universe 6 Saga
Copy-Vegeta Saga
Later, Gohan and Videl return home to find Pan greeting them. Goku, Goten, Chi-Chi, and Piccolo are also there. Gohan is surprised to hear Pan call Goku "Gramps." He then reveals that he declined the professor’s assistant job, deciding it would take too much time away from Videl and Pan. "Future" Trunks Saga
Gohan then attends a meeting where he learns that Future Trunks’ timeline is threatened by Goku Black—actually Zamasu, the Universe 10 Supreme Kai’s apprentice—who swapped bodies with Goku, killed Goku’s family in an unaltered timeline, and joined with his future self to destroy humanity and the gods. After Zamasu’s defeat and the destruction of Future Trunks’ universe, Gohan bids Trunks and Mai farewell as they seek a safe new world. In a baseball game against Universe 6, Gohan surprises everyone as the catcher catching Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue pitch, and later follows instructions to hit the ball strategically, leading to a chaotic play involving other fighters. Noticing Goku acting strange, Gohan follows him in his Great Saiyaman guise and later confronts him, learning that Goku is dealing with a serious threat. When Goku turns Super Saiyan Blue and collapses after fighting Hit, Gohan and others rush to his aid, witnessing the severity of the situation. Later, Gohan gets involved in a film about Great Saiyaman, where actor Barry Kahn plays the role. Barry becomes jealous as Gohan doubles for dangerous stunts, gaining attention and catching the eye of the love interest, Cocoa Amaguri. During filming, Gohan stops a bank robbery involving a parasite called Watagash that amplifies hatred. Barry, infected by Watagash, tries to blackmail Gohan but is ultimately defeated after a fierce battle, with Gohan unleashing a powerful new attack, the “Super Great Saiyaman Beam.” The film incorporates the battle, and the public receives it well. Afterward, Gohan and his family see Goku training in the fields. Goten suggests Goku wants a sparring partner and hints at Gohan. Though initially reluctant, Gohan transforms into Great Saiyaman and challenges Goku. Their sparring escalates until Chi-Chi angrily stops them after they damage the countryside. Universal Survival Saga
Gohan hesitates, saying he hasn’t regained his fighting instincts. Goku encourages him, reminding Gohan that a good fight is what he needs to recover those instincts and recalls their recent sparring. When Goku explains the high stakes, Gohan worries about the consequences of losing, but Goku assures him they will deal with it. Seeing Pan and Videl calms Gohan, and with Videl urging him to respect Goku’s wishes, Gohan agrees to fight. At this point, Hercule and Buu arrive, with Goku persuading Buu to join and Hercule acting as Buu’s handler. Gohan, having retrieved his gi, arrives on the Sacred World of the Kais. Beerus is initially unimpressed with Gohan and Buu as team members but warms to Gohan after Goku shares that Gohan suggested keeping the tournament’s stakes secret to avoid panicking the public — an idea Beerus likes. After watching Buu’s win, Gohan faces his opponent, Lavender. He plans to take it slow to regain his senses, but Goku tells him to go all out since Lavender’s energy can’t be sensed, making cautious tactics ineffective. Agreeing, Gohan launches a rapid, powerful attack, pushing Lavender back. Lavender tries to attach himself to Gohan’s arm and sprays poison into his face, temporarily blinding him and giving Lavender the advantage. Hercule worries, but Goku sees it as perfect training because Gohan now must fight without sensing his opponent. Roh boasts that Gohan will die if he doesn’t give up, as the poison will rot his body. Shin prepares to throw Gohan a senzu bean, but Gohan refuses, wanting to win on his own strength. Focusing, Gohan blocks Lavender’s attacks by listening carefully, surprising Lavender who calls it a fluke. Gohan blocks and counters all attacks, forcing Lavender to resort to ki blasts, which Gohan deflects effortlessly. Lavender attacks from a distance, but Goku reminds the observers that this intense challenge is exactly what Gohan needs to regain his full fighting prowess. Pushed to the limit, Gohan unlocks deeper potential and ascends into Super Saiyan, shocking everyone. The Zenos admire Gohan’s form, calling it beautiful and powerful. Meanwhile, fighters from Universe 11 speculate that Universe 7’s warriors might be hiding their true strength. Lavender is unimpressed by Gohan’s Super Saiyan form and launches another attack, but Gohan easily deflects it and the subsequent blasts. Suddenly, Gohan charges Lavender, who assumes Gohan has regained his sight. Gohan reveals he’s still blind but is using his energy like a radar to locate him. Goku praises Gohan’s technique, and Whis calls it brilliant but warns it’s risky because the Super Saiyan state speeds up the poison’s effect. Gohan overwhelms Lavender and slams him hard into the ground. As Gohan moves in for a final strike, the poison accelerates to his heart, nearly killing him and forcing him back to his base form. Lavender seizes the moment to relentlessly attack the weakened Gohan, savoring the thought of killing him. But Gohan, refusing to give up, powers up again to Super Saiyan, ignoring Shin’s protests about the risk, and renews his assault. During their fierce exchange, Gohan fires a Kamehameha that counters Lavender’s poison breath. However, the poison reaches Gohan’s arms, and Lavender’s barrage overwhelms him again. When Lavender tries to finish him with another toxic blast, Gohan, fed up, flies straight through the poison — much to everyone’s shock — and emerges unharmed. He grabs Lavender in a Full Nelson hold, explaining he doesn’t need sight to catch him at close range. Gohan flies high into the void, flips upside down, then plunges back down to the arena floor. Lavender tries to escape, but Gohan, much stronger physically, restrains him and delivers a piledrive through the arena floor, knocking Lavender out cold. Nearly spent, Gohan stands and declares victory before passing out. The Grand Priest inspects the damage and rules the fight a draw since both fighters are unconscious, disappointing the crowd who expected a clear winner. Goku rushes to Gohan, gives him a senzu bean, and shares the news about his upcoming fight. Though disappointed, Gohan is encouraged by Goku, who praises his strength and expresses excitement for his next match. Reinvigorated, Gohan vows to become stronger. As the Grand Priest repairs the arena, Gohan wishes Goku luck and they fist bump. During Goku’s battle against Toppo, Gohan feels excitement awakening inside him from his Saiyan blood. After the fight, Gohan decides to plan a strategy and work with Goku to form their team, suggesting Piccolo and Master Roshi. Goku suggests Krillin, but Gohan doubts him. Goku asks Gohan to watch a simulation of the battle using image training, where it’s clear Krillin would be overwhelmed. However, Goku insists Krillin’s power has grown recently and invites Gohan to test him. Gohan is surprised by Krillin’s strength but starts overpowering him until Krillin uses a new x100 Solar Flare technique, causing Gohan to fall out of the ring. Recognizing he’s rusty, Gohan goes to find Piccolo. Piccolo agrees to join and trains Gohan, aiming to restore his former powers. He has two senzu beans but insists they save them for after training is complete. Piccolo challenges Gohan, who powers up to Super Saiyan but is easily pushed back by Piccolo, who still wears his weighted clothing. Piccolo reveals that Goku had asked him to help train Gohan because despite his strength, Gohan is rusty and lacks his sharp instincts. Piccolo points out Gohan’s main flaw: eagerness that leads to mistakes and arrogance. He advises Gohan to calm down. Gohan listens, powers up to Super Saiyan 2, and fights better but Piccolo removes his weights and quickly gains the advantage. He traps Gohan in extended arms and warns he will kill him if Gohan doesn’t improve. Gohan wonders how Piccolo got so strong. Piccolo yells that he’s been training hard while Gohan has been slacking. Gohan passes out near death, and Piccolo revives him with a powerful Kiai blast to the heart. Upon waking, Piccolo tells Gohan he hasn’t fully committed his heart to the warrior inside, causing him to lower his guard at critical moments. Piccolo warns that Gohan’s power often leads to arrogance, causing defeats. Gohan powers up again to Super Saiyan 2, attacks harder, but Piccolo insists this isn’t his true power and urges him to reawaken his “true self.” Taking Piccolo’s advice, Gohan unlocks his Potential Unleashed form. Piccolo summons his clones for another fight, with Gohan declaring he won’t hold back. He defeats the clones easily and even chops off Piccolo’s arm, thinking he got the real Piccolo. Piccolo attacks from behind with the severed arm, scolding Gohan for dropping his guard and telling him not to be like his father, to fight until the end. After a break, Gohan cooks a T-Rex tail for them. Piccolo believes Gohan hasn’t reached his full power yet and offers to help him push further. He asks if Gohan is curious about how strong he can become. Gohan agrees eagerly, suggesting they also work on tag team attacks. Piccolo likes the idea and agrees. After meditating together, Piccolo tells Gohan he’s taught him all he can, so they head out to find Goku, who is dining with Master Roshi, Tien, and Chiaotzu. Gohan asks to spar with his father, surprising everyone except Goku, who is immediately impressed by the power Gohan radiates upon arrival. They move to a mountain plateau for a tag team battle royale like the tournament. Tien warns Goku to be cautious, but Goku insists the fighters will get hurt if they hold back as Gohan charges both Tien and Goku. Goku manages to block and evade but struggles to keep pace. Gohan admits he isn’t at full strength yet, which worries Tien, but Piccolo tells Gohan to calm down. Piccolo powers up next, prompting Goku and Tien to team up against him. Gohan suddenly shields Piccolo, knocks Tien down with a heavy body blow, and attacks Goku again with renewed ferocity. Goku withstands the onslaught but is gradually overwhelmed. Tien tries to use the Tri-Beam on Gohan, but Goku tells him to target Piccolo instead. Gohan kicks Goku away, fires an explosive blast near Tien’s feet, and punches Tien through a mountain. Goku aids Tien, grazing Gohan with an attack, which he dodges. Tien barely recovers before Piccolo ambushes Goku with a powerful Hyper Explosive Demon Wave, overwhelming him. As the battlefield collapses, Tien calls a halt, but Gohan demands a one-on-one fight with Goku, who powers up to Super Saiyan 2. Piccolo and Tien step back as Gohan activates his Potential Unleashed form. Goku, surprised Gohan isn’t using Super Saiyan, learns Gohan aims for an ultimate form beyond all known transformations. Their battle begins evenly, with Gohan blocking all of Goku’s attacks and pushing him back. Goku uses Instant Transmission to gain an advantage, knocking Gohan down and firing a Kamehameha. Gohan counters and powers up further, chasing Goku into the air and dominating the fight, demanding Goku get serious. Thrown into the sky, Goku powers up to Super Saiyan Blue and battles on, soon adding the Kaio-Ken technique. Encouraged by Piccolo’s cheers, Gohan smiles, proud to push his father to his limit. Their final clash sends shockwaves felt across the planet, astounding Vegeta and the Kais observing from Capsule Corp. When the dust settles, Gohan is unconscious. After recovery with senzu beans, Goku expresses pride in Gohan’s strength and announces he’s stepping down as Team Universe 7’s captain, appointing Gohan in his place, shocking Gohan. Gohan immediately calls a team meeting to strategize. When Majin Buu falls asleep and Goku tries to rouse him, most of the team gathers at Capsule Corp. Gohan reveals the dire stakes of universe erasure to the group after Krillin brings up prize money. Goku suggests recruiting Frieza to replace Buu, surprising Gohan but accepting the necessity. Vegeta and Frieza clash provocatively, and Gohan urges Vegeta to set aside past grudges for the universe’s sake. With Goku and Vegeta unlikely to cooperate fully, Gohan and Piccolo assume command. Once the team is complete with ten members, Whis transports them to the World of Void to face warriors from other universes. Gohan outlines a plan to fight in a circle using teamwork. Vegeta objects, calling it dull. As the fight starts, Goku, 17, 18, Vegeta, and Frieza all break formation to engage independently. Gohan protests with Beerus, but Roshi calms him, reminding him not to be surprised by their behavior. Gohan regains focus and, alongside Tien, Krillin, Piccolo, and Roshi, successfully repels an attack from Universe 9 through teamwork despite their lower individual power. After Universe 9’s erasure, Gohan shares the shock of the remaining fighters. They soon face an attack from Universe 10’s Dium, but Gohan easily deflects the blast and reminds his teammates not to exert themselves fully, emphasizing that as long as one remains, victory is assured. Dium aggressively targets Gohan but is quickly defeated by Krillin and Master Roshi. Gohan then witnesses Kale’s destructive rampage. Although briefly separated, the team regroups successfully. Realizing his original plan is no longer viable given the battlefield’s condition, Gohan proposes splitting into pairs: Tien with Master Roshi, and himself with Piccolo. While searching, Gohan is ambushed by Botamo and fights back. Initially mocked, Goku arrives to observe and questions Gohan’s tactics. Gohan’s strategy soon becomes clear as he lifts Botamo off the ground effortlessly, throwing him out of the ring with punches, kicks, and a Kamehameha. Both Goku and Piccolo express pride before parting ways. Shortly after, Gohan and Piccolo are attacked by Obni and Rubalt, Universe 10’s last survivors. Rubalt swiftly sends Piccolo flying, leaving Gohan alone against Obni. In base form, Gohan matches Obni, but struggles once Obni duplicates himself to confuse him. Whis notes Gohan relies on instinct and senses rather than sight, a disadvantage here. Gohan powers up and challenges Obni to repeat the trick, taking a direct hit without flinching. Piccolo returns, having dispatched Rubalt, and watches as Gohan fights back fiercely. Whis explains the plan works but requires Gohan to endure numerous powerful strikes. Beerus anxiously urges him not to fail. Eventually, Obni exhausts his energy from feints, allowing Gohan to overwhelm him. Gohan blindsides Obni, leaps into the air, and fires a Super Kamehameha, knocking him out of the ring. Afterward, Gohan finds a family locket on Obni, feeling sorrow, but Piccolo quickly refocuses him on moving forward. Later, Universe 6’s Dr. Rota approaches Gohan and Piccolo to reveal his ability but is immediately attacked by a powerful, focused Ki blast. Piccolo throws a rock which is destroyed by the same blast. Piccolo explains the attack resembles his Special Beam Cannon and is shot from afar, noting they cannot sense the attacker’s energy. Gohan asks if Dr. Rota is dead, but Piccolo says if he were, the attacker would be disqualified, so he must still be alive. The two move stealthily to an area with rubble. During the pursuit, Piccolo’s arm is severed but he regenerates. They attempt to lure the attacker by exposing Piccolo’s arm, which is shot again but dodged. Gohan spots the shot’s origin, and they head there. Using a rock and Ki blast, Piccolo creates dust cover and discovers one of Prum’s spheres, which emits heat and is destroyed. Piccolo takes another hit meant for Gohan, losing both arms, but regenerates again. He deduces the attacker tracks body heat, explaining the precision shots. To counter, Gohan and Piccolo heat the entire area, tricking the attacker. Prum responds by bombarding them with Ki blasts, cutting off escape. They hide under a rock as Tien arrives to help dodge attacks but is eventually eliminated by Hermila. After Hermila and Prum’s defeat, Gohan and Piccolo regroup. Separated from Piccolo, Gohan faces Universe 2’s Jimizu. Despite Gohan’s power advantage, Jimizu’s skilled Instant Transmission causes trouble until Frieza intervenes. Frieza mocks Gohan for holding back like his father and brutally defeats Jimizu, drawing Gohan’s criticism. Frost appears, revealing his alliance with Frieza and distrusts Gohan, urging Frieza to kill him. Frieza complies, attacking Gohan fiercely. Gohan powers up to his Ultimate Form, pushing Frieza back easily. Frieza transforms into Golden Form and reengages, dealing damage to Gohan and knocking him unconscious. After Frieza eliminates Frost, Gohan quickly recovers. Observers are stunned, and Beerus realizes Gohan had trusted Frieza’s intentions from the start. Gohan explains he sensed Frieza’s restraint during their first exchange and chose to play along. Frieza confirms he tested Gohan’s strength, sparing him only because Gohan could handle Golden Form. As Frieza leaves with Gohan, Frost attacks from the stands but is instantly erased by Zeno, who warns Universe 6 against further disruptions or face erasure. Apologizing, Champa watches as Frieza smiles at Gohan, suggesting they cooperate to ensure their universe’s victory. Gohan returns the smile, accepting the alliance. Gohan reunites with Piccolo and watches his father’s colossal fight against Jiren. He is the first to give Goku energy for his Spirit Bomb and grows increasingly worried as Goku struggles. Initially devastated, thinking Goku has been killed by his own attack, Gohan is overjoyed and amazed when Goku rises stronger than ever, marveling at his new power unlike anything he’s seen. Soon after, alongside Piccolo, Gohan protects the weakened Goku from Saonel and Pilina’s attacks. Later, he declines to assist his father against Universe 3, confident Goku will recover as usual. During Gohan and Piccolo’s battle, they face a tough challenge from the Namekian duo, frequently saving each other. However, Gohan gains ground in base form, knee-dropping Pilina’s arm off, forcing a regeneration, and blocks Saonel’s attack aimed at Piccolo with a Masenko. Their fight pauses briefly due to Goku’s battle with Kefla, which deeply intrigues Gohan. After witnessing Goku’s victory over the fused Saiyan females, Gohan again expresses admiration for his father and agrees with Piccolo that Goku needs help. But before they can assist, Saonel and Pilina intercept them, forcing the fight to resume. Both Gohan and Piccolo sense a change in their opponents; Gohan realizes the two have fused with all Namekians in Universe 6, greatly boosting their vitality and endurance. Gohan powers up to his Ultimate state and tells Piccolo he can focus on full power without worrying about killing them. He asks Piccolo to charge his Special Beam Cannon to maximum. As Gohan fights, Piccolo grows impatient and fires too early, doing no damage to Pilina, who responds with a Mouth Ki Wave. Mentally confronted by Kami and Nail, Piccolo awakens and finds Gohan shielding him, promising not to repeat his mistake. Gohan then dominates Saonel and Pilina. Setting up the finishing move, Gohan charges a Super Kamehameha simultaneously with his father, who is trapped in a black hole by Universe 2. Saonel is overwhelmed, and Pilina fires another Mouth Wave at Gohan in desperation. As Saonel pulls through the blast, he is pierced by Piccolo’s Special Beam Cannon, which continues through Pilina, allowing Gohan to blast both out of the arena, eliminating Universe 6. Gohan nearly falls out of the ring against Gamisalas but is saved by Piccolo. Inspired by Master Roshi’s advice, Gohan blasts the ring floor to create a dust cloud, revealing his invisible opponent and enabling Piccolo to quickly finish him. Back with the team, Universe 7 faces Universe 3. While Androids 17 and 18 handle Biarra, Gohan fights the rest alone to conserve Goku and Vegeta’s stamina for Universe 11. Initially, Gohan in his Potential Unleashed form easily counters Universe 3’s fighters. But when they fuse into Koicéareta, Gohan still holds his own but faces close calls. After slipping and engaging in a strength test, Gohan eventually overpowers Koicéareta and pushes him off the ring. At this moment, Goku and Vegeta arrive, explaining Gohan’s efforts restored their stamina. Vegeta declares they won’t watch a fused opponent dominate, and together the three power up—Goku and Vegeta to Super Saiyan Blue, Gohan to max—and launch a coordinated attack. Paparoni mocks their efforts and predicts their loss, but Vegeta counters with confidence. Gohan leaps from behind Vegeta, unleashing a fully charged Ultimate Kamehameha. Though Koicéareta initially blocks, he is eventually overwhelmed and seemingly destroyed. Goku praises Gohan’s finish, Vegeta smiles proudly, and Beerus shows respect by addressing Gohan by name. However, Universe 3 narrowly survives as Paparoni reveals a new fusion with Koicéareta. The monstrous fighter easily overwhelms Universe 7, and after Android 18 sacrifices herself to protect 17, the remaining team’s strongest attacks fail. Realizing victory is impossible, 17 breaks through with his barrier and destroys the fusion’s reactor, allowing teammates to finish off Universe 3. In the final battle, Gohan teams with Android 17 against Top. Struggling to coordinate due to lack of familiarity, 17 advises abandoning teamwork. They devise a plan: 17 will immobilize Top and sacrifice himself, giving Gohan a chance to eliminate both. The plan nearly succeeds, though Top frees himself at the last moment. The fight is interrupted when Gohan and 17 notice Frieza battling Dyspo. When Beerus scolds Frieza for edging too close to the ring, Gohan calls out to him and leaves Android 17 to hold off Top so he can assist Frieza. Frieza reminds Gohan who he is and asks what he would do if Gohan betrayed him. An unamused Gohan replies that if such a betrayal happens, he will personally eliminate the undead emperor. Though unimpressed, Frieza agrees to cooperate. Dyspo uses his maximum speed to dodge attacks from both Gohan and Frieza, but Gohan is surprised to realize he can actually see Dyspo’s movements—something Frieza cannot do. Seizing the opportunity, Gohan orders Frieza to trap Dyspo in a Cage of Light to limit his movement. Initially hesitant, Frieza complies. Gohan charges Dyspo, allowing himself to be hit so Frieza can imprison them. Dyspo tries to reason with Gohan, but Gohan disregards him and attacks. Dyspo attempts to move but hits the Cage, realizing he’s trapped. Dyspo engages Gohan in a head-to-head battle, using his speed to try to overwhelm him. Shockingly, Gohan keeps pace and gains the upper hand with his superior strength and technique, quickly overwhelming Dyspo. Just as Gohan is about to finish him, Frieza loses control of the cage and it breaks. Dyspo tries to use his speed to eliminate Gohan, but because Gohan can see his moves, he catches Dyspo in a rear naked choke and tells Frieza to finish them both. Frieza praises Gohan’s plan, calling him truly worthy of leading the team, then fires a Death Cannon, eliminating both Dyspo and Gohan. After Gohan’s elimination, Android 18 tends to him, asking if he’s alright. Gohan says he’s fine as Piccolo and Master Roshi commend Gohan’s strategy. Beerus smiles in approval at the young Saiyan, and Goku expresses pride in his eldest son. Super Hero
One day, Videl contacts Piccolo to ask if he can pick up Pan from school because both she and Gohan are busy. Piccolo goes straight to Gohan’s home to check on him. He interrupts Gohan, who is working on his computer, writing a report on insects. Gohan greets him through an open window and explains his project. Piccolo teasingly asks if the report is more important than picking up his daughter, but Gohan gladly accepts Piccolo’s help. Piccolo questions why Gohan isn’t training more regularly, warning that a new threat could appear anytime. Gohan brushes it off, confident that Goku and Vegeta would handle it. Suddenly, Piccolo tests him by attacking. Gohan blocks the first strike but drops his guard on the second. Piccolo then materializes his weighted clothes onto Gohan, who struggles with the added burden. As Piccolo leaves, Gohan thanks him and offers to buy him another stuffed animal, much to Piccolo’s annoyance. Gohan then returns to his work. Meanwhile, the new Red Ribbon Army, unable to find Goku or Vegeta, targets Gohan. Their plan is to kidnap Pan to lure Gohan to their base so the Gammas can defeat him. Piccolo overhears the plan and decides to stage Pan’s kidnapping, having her pretend to be distressed to provoke Gohan’s fighting instincts. Disguised as a Red Ribbon soldier, Piccolo and another soldier confront Gohan at his home. Although threatened at gunpoint, Gohan remains unfazed until shown video footage of Pan. Enraged, Gohan transforms into a Super Saiyan, causing a crater that sinks his home, and demands to know Pan’s whereabouts. At the base, Gohan spots Pan held captive in a tower and rushes to her. He is intercepted by Gamma 2, while Dr. Hedo orders Gamma 1 to fight him. Gohan struggles to land hits on Gamma 1 in his base form. After transforming into Super Saiyan, he fares better but still can’t overpower the android. Piccolo, still disguised, raises Pan and has her scream, fueling Gohan’s fury. This pushes Gohan into his Potential Unleashed state, enabling him to gain the upper hand. The battle ends when Carmine shoots at Pan, leading the Gammas to realize they are on the wrong side. As Magenta dies, he releases Cell Max. During the chaos, Gohan accidentally loses a Senzu Bean when Piccolo tosses it to him and it falls into a crevice, leaving Gohan unable to recover fully from his fight with Gamma 1. Despite this, Gohan uses Super Saiyan to join the fight, but Cell Max’s power overwhelms everyone. Even with Piccolo transforming into his new Orange form, they cannot defeat Cell Max. Piccolo gives Gohan his last Senzu Bean, believing only Gohan can finish the battle. Gohan powers up to Potential Unleashed again, encouraged by Piccolo who says Gohan could be the world’s strongest if he puts his mind to it. Despite their efforts, the fight remains difficult. Piccolo volunteers to buy Gohan time by engaging Cell Max alone while Gohan charges his power. Watching Piccolo take severe damage, Gohan snaps like he did long ago and undergoes an unprecedented awakening—Gohan Beast. He effortlessly catches a punch from Cell Max and kicks him into a cliffside. As Cell Max charges a massive blast, Gohan prepares his newly learned Special Beam Cannon. Orange Piccolo keeps Cell Max distracted, allowing Gohan to fire the beam straight through Cell Max’s head, destroying him. After the battle, Gohan embraces Pan. Piccolo, impressed by Gohan’s use of the Special Beam Cannon, asks when he learned it. Gohan admits he practiced it in secret. Piccolo praises it as a marvelous display. Pan then shows off a new flying technique while Gohan watches proudly. Peaceful World Saga

Powers and Techniques
- Chi Manipulation & Ki Manipulation (All beings in Dragon Ball[48][49][50] have ki, the very life force energy of all characters[51], ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even[52] block attacks that would otherwise[53] kill them from[54] raising their guard[55], higher level users can lower their own durability to allow people far below them to fatally wound them[56])
- Aura
- Projection: A users ki aura can exert itself[57] as a weapon to attack[58].
- Explosive: Ki users through powering up can form an entire aura around themself, radiating their immense power[59], where depending on their immense strength, can cause them to explode their aura outwards to remove excess ki from themself[60].
- Mood Reflection: Goku and Piccolo Jr. with their auras and their stern concentration on each other reflected in their electric auras, even shooting electricity at each other[61].
- Emotional Empowerment (It's noted that ki users can receive energy through one cheering them on[62]. Ki users can be greatly increased by their emotions and beliefs, Son Goku explains that Son Gohan needs to remember the time he fought Cell and bring out all of the power he has, this way he can lose to no one[63] where it's shown during the Cell beam clash that he was holding back greatly out of fear of destroying the earth but from being cheered on and using all of his power within him, he was able to overpower Cell[64])
- Attack Reflection (All Ki users are able to reflect attacks just by being stronger than their opponent[65]. Examples include, Nappa deflecting a masenko from Son Gohan[66], Son Gohan being able to bounce back the spirit bomb[67], Son Goku deflecting a crusher ball from Jeice[68], Frieza deflecting a Final Burst Cannon from Vegeta[69], Son Goku reflecting multiple death beams back to back from Frieza[70], and Future Trunks being able to completely repel an energy blast with his hand from a Frieza Soldier just by being much stronger than them[71])
- Homing Attack (Ki users can create attacks that will home in and chase a target forever[72])
- Penetration Damage
- Weapon Creation (Ki users can create energy weapons out of their attacks[76])
- Power Absorption & Energy Transferal (Ki users can transfer their ki to others and absorb the ki given to them from others[77])
- Attack Nullification
- Power Nullification
- Ki Energy Based: Through having greater ki, one can nullify the powers done through ki attacks, such as Frieza being able to nullify a hakai ball[81], which fully destroys a target[82], though he is unable to resist a hakai ball from Toppo due to him being stronger[83], this ability however only works on ki, attacks unrelated, characters cannot resist through being stronger, such as how Vegeta, Krillin, & Son Gohan are unable to resist Guldo's psychic powers[84], along with even the likes of Son Goku[85].
- Forcefield Creation (Ki users such as Cell can generate forcefields around themselves[86]. These forcefields can be expanded[87], and used to protect others and defend against attacks far higher then the user[88])
- Super Armor (Through releasing one's ki, they enter a state known as "Hyper Mode"[89], in this state they do not flinch from weak melee attacks[90])
- Self-Destruction (Ki users in Dragon Ball are able to[91] release all of the energy within them[92] to cause a massive[93] self-destruction of energy that normally kills the user and turns them into dust[94] though one can control it to surviving but having no stamina or energy left[95])
- Dormant Power Reservoir (Ki users have a dormant power reservoir within them, as shown in arcs like the Buu Saga where Babidi saps this energy in order to use the energy to revive Buu and break his seal[96])
- Internal Destruction (Powerful ki users can overload enemies with their ki, causing them to swell up and explode from the sheer density of ki within them[97])
- Binding
- Dreaming Existence (Characters in Shin Budokai have shown to create physical bodies in alternate timelines through dreaming[100])
- Non-Standard Interaction
- Intangible Interaction: Those with ki can block intangible attacks when they focus and notices them[101].
- Space-Time Interaction (3+1-D): Characters can blast space-time distortions to close them[102].
- Healing
- Healing Singular Targets
- Advanced Healing: Ki can be used to heal beings, allowing them to survive even with half their torso[103], it can also heal from near death[104].
- Healing Singular Targets
- Resurrection
- Resurrection of the Deceased (Limited): Ki users can resurrect ones heart from death if their ki beams hit their heart, restarting it[105].
- Resurrection from Exhaustion: Can heal downed allies to give them ki back, reviving them[106])
- Intimidation & Spirit Manipulation (Ki is the manifestation of one’s lifeforce[107], along with the aura giving one the feeling of being crushed[108], exerting fear[109] into the target, sometimes making them incapable of moving as their[110] body is instinctively stuck due to the sheer difference in power[111])
- Link Manipulation & Mind Manipulation (Characters can link their ki together and train within each other’s mind enacting in image training[112])
- Vibration Manipulation
- Electricity Manipulation
- Weather Manipulation (Powerful Ki users can generate entire storms through merely powering up alone, Nappa used this in order to conjure the electricity from the storm[117]. Goku showcases this when he first turns super saiyan, causing a massive lightning storm in the background[118])
- Energy Manipulation (Ki is the latent power in one's body, this latent power allows them to form and create energy from controlling their ki, which can be used to shoot out energy blast[119])
- Explosion Manipulation (Ki attacks can create massive explosions[121], or control the ki to set off a huge explosion under the enemy[122], or in front of them[123])
- Portal Manipulation
- Non-combat applicable: Characters in GT can link their minds together to open a portal between the living realm and the other world[124].
- Heat Manipulation
- Light Manipulation (Ki can be used as a flash of light[128][129][130][131][132][133][134][135][136], Degisu seeing ki attacks be fired notes that the characters are "firing light from their hands"[137]).
- Limited Resistance to
- Durability Negation (Ki users can focus their energy to localize an object to a specific spot to stop them from attempting to destroy their organs/insides[138])
- Soul Manipulation (Characters with a strong enough will can keep moving after getting their soul reaped, though this requires something akin to a familial or friendship empowerment)
- Longevity (Saiyans can keep their youth until around 80 years old)
- Reactive Power Level (A Saiyan’s power increases if they survive from injuries in battle, with their powers allowing them to greatly exceed their previous levels beforehand)
- Rage Power (Mere rage can amplify a Saiyan to a level that's believed to be a myth even by the highest levels of Saiyans in the verse)
- Damage Boost (Saiyans attack power rises when health is low)
- Statistics Amplification (Saiyans have all of their stats rise when they're revived)
- Transformation (Transformative Arsenal; If Saiyans have their tail, they can transform into a giant great ape when the full moon shines).
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics
- Genius Intelligence
- Fighter's Intuition (Son Gohan was trained to fight by fighters such as Son Goku and Piccolo)
- Acrobatics
- Enhanced Senses
- Extrasensory Perception
- Flight
- Accelerated Development (Training, Physical Stats, Skill, & Abilities; Gohan as well as others can train and quickly grow stronger, surpassing even the earthlings, being already far stronger than his father as a kid just from training for two years with Piccolo)
- Precognition (Premonitions; Son Gohan has had dark premonition dreams of his loved one's being killed, these dreams have him able to view beings like Perfect Cell who he hasn't seen before[140], and warn him of Frieza coming to Earth[141]),

He holds one hand with the other supporting it upward in a fashion similar to the Explosive Demon Wave and, as he shouts "I've had enough!", he forms an energy sphere with excess energy releasing off of it in the form of medium-sized energy rings. Finally, Gohan brings his hands forward and fires a powerful yellow energy wave with a large energy sphere at the end at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage.
- Soaring Dragon Strike: A powerful uppercut that Gohan uses, charged up by his Ki energy.

- Super Breath: The user inhales deeply, and then exhale creating a huge gust of wind similar to a hurricane.
- Chou Maretsugeki: As he shouts, "Watch this!", Gohan charges at the opponent and elbows them up into the air. Then, he flies up into the air and hook kicks the opponent in their stomach. Next, he attacks the opponent with a punch and a barrage of kicks before roundhouse kicking them away. Finally, Gohan flies after the opponent and hand chops them down to the ground, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
- Soaring Dragon Strike: As he shouts "Hi-ya!", Gohan attacks with a sharp hook punch to the opponent's gut. Then, he follows up with a swift uppercut to the opponent's chin, knocking them away and inflicting a high amount of damage.
- Explosive Demon Impact: As he shouts "I'm not finished!", Gohan charges at the opponent and roundhouse kicks them in their face. Then, he charges at the opponent again and hook kicks them away, inflicting a high amount of damage.

Finally, Gohan flips back up on his feet and puts both of his hands forward to blast the opponent away with a blue energy wave, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
- Super Explosive Wave: The user stands charging energy around their body, then they explode with a gigantic energy sphere around their body.
- Burst Rush: Gohan charges at the opponent, elbows them in the chin, and punches them in the stomach. He then hooks kicks them and kicks them up into the air. Then, he flies up into the air and attacks the opponent with a punch to the face, another punch to gut, and a roundhouse kick to the jaw, knocking them further up into the air. Next, he flies up and appears above the opponent to backhand punch them down to the ground, forcing the opponent to land on their hands and knees to recover from the bone-crushing blows.
- I'm Here to Kill You: As he says either "I'll make you pay" or "I'm here to kill you", Gohan kicks his opponent in the stomach. Next, he does a 360 spin, kicking the opponent in the neck. Last, Gohan moves behind the opponent and knocks him down to the ground with a left hook, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
- Great Ape: This transformation occurs when a person with Saiyan heritage (and with a tail) absorbs enough blutz waves through the eyes, usually from looking at a full moon. This stimulates a gland in the tail, enabling a seemingly unavoidable transformation. In this form, Gohan's capacities increase 10 fold. Because Gohan never had any proper training, Gohan loses all form of mental control, becoming a primal beast. However, during his fight against Vegeta, Goku's words were able to reach Gohan enough to regain some of his rational thought and focus on his real enemy. Gohan only transforms into this state three times throughout the series as ultimately, his tail was permanently removed. Gohan is the only known Saiyan/Human hybrid to ever achieve this transformation, due to having been born with a Saiyan tail.
- Super Saiyan: Gohan became a Super Saiyan at nine years of age (ten if including the months spent in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber), during the intense training he endured with his father to help him ascend. At the time, Gohan was the youngest to appear as a Super Saiyan until the appearance of his brother, Son Goten, who accesses the state effortlessly at seven years old. In this state, his capacities are increased 50 fold. In this state, his musculature grows more defined, while his eyes become sterner and green, and his hair turns blond while standing up more with no loose strands. His energy is manifested as a golden aura. After Gohan had his potential unlocked by Old Kai, Gohan would rarely use this or any higher form, due his base state's power already being well-beyond the previous limits that Super Saiyan alone would provide. However, doing so still increases his power as proportionally as previously. After Gohan’s earnest studies led him to need glasses, his diminished eyesight is restored in his Super Saiyan forms.
- Super Saiyan Full Power: Gohan is one of the first to gain full mastery over Super Saiyan. After Goku noted the inherit weakness of transforming, a reduction in stamina and ki, Gohan learned to perfect this form with his father. By working to remain transformed for extended periods of time, Gohan and his father gradually learned to overcome the transformation's drawback to feel as natural in this form as their base state. This mastery of Super Saiyan enables full control over the energy output and consumption, completely diminishing strain on the body, even while constantly maintaining maximum power for. It also has caused no affect to Gohan's emotional nature and subsequently gives of a pure energy that attracts wildlife.
- Super Saiyan 2: Gohan was the first and the youngest to reach Super Saiyan 2, achieving it at the age of 9 (technically 10). This occurred when a larger portion of his dormant power was awakened in rage from Perfect Cell killing the peaceful Android 16. While in this form, Gohan's muscle mass increases slightly and hair stands straight up and spikier with the exception of one lock that hangs down. Also, his aura is surrounded by repeated flashes of blue electricity. Originally, so new with this massive boost of power, it warped Gohan's attitude, giving him an almost sadistic sense of mind as he wanted to make Cell suffer for his evil actions, whereas before Gohan was a pacifist to a fault who didn't want to hurt the villainous Cell.
- Unlock Potential: Unlock Potential is a state of self-enhancement to focus the full extent of their current capacities. Gohan acquired it from Guru while on Planet Namek, who noted that Gohan's capacities were by far the greatest he had ever seen. Gohan's abilities were all greatly enhanced, and as a side effect, continuously grew at noticeably faster rates with each battle, as noted by Vegeta. This awakening made Gohan's power increase multiple fold, making him equal to Vegeta's strength when the latter appeared on Earth. This, however, only appeared to release his initial potential as only through moments of extreme emotion could he manifest all of his power.
- Potential Unleashed (Ultimate Gohan): Much later Old Kai uses his unlock ability to bring out the full extent of Gohan's dormant power. This powered up Gohan is still able to use Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 on top of it, and also became capable of taking on a form called Potential Unleashed which released his power to beyond it's limits. On one occasion, Gohan was referred to as "Ultimate Gohan" while in this state even without being in his Potential Unleashed form. In addition to Old Kai's Unlock Ability granting Gohan full access to all his developed capacities, Gohan is capable of pushing his power well-past those levels via his Potential Unleashed state. This power-up is when the full extent of his dormant capacities are released. This state looks identical to his base state, but with the addition of a lock of hair hanging down over his forehead in the anime. Once accessing his Unlocked power, Gohan's subtle differences are present to his appearances, including more pronounced facial features including sterner eyes, and is able to manifest a large white aura.
- Gohan Beast: Gohan Beast is an evolution of the Potential Unleashed state unique to Gohan awakened through rage as a result of witnessing his teacher Piccolo's apparent death at Cell Max's hand. In this form, Gohan's eyebrows turn white, while his hair turns light gray and lengthens to resemble his old Super Saiyan 2 hairstyle as a boy. His eyes become fully red with black pupils. Gohan's power is such that he effortlessly withstood a full power punch from Cell Max and defeat him with ease.
Other
Standard Tactics: Gohan exhibits a more passive style to fighting, usually trying to ask the other side to not fight but he will fight to defend himself and his friends, in which he uses hand to hand combat along with energy blasts.
Weaknesses
- Standard Ki Weaknesses: Ki users that do not have sufficient training over their emotions put their power within a mental lock, thus affects to their emotions can seriously limit their powers[143], their emotions can also have them instinctively block using the full power of their attacks out of fear of the destruction along with lack of confidence in themselves[144]. If a Ki user is inflicted with any kind of status, disease, or poison, powering up or transforming will put further strain on the body[145] and can speed up the process of poison[146]. Users of Ki Sensing cannot sense beings that invisible, even if the character is in front of them attacking them, they have a hard time countering them due to being invisible[147]. Users of Ki Sensing also have a harder time sensing the true being using illusions, requiring them to focus in on energy fields to see who is moving and who is casting the illusion[148]. Due to the nature of ki draining stamina and energy, Dragon Ball characters ki usage requires them to usually use their higher levels of energy in short bursts, using a large amount of ki overtime can greatly weaken them to the point that characters far lower then them can actually harm them with attacks[149]. Taking large amounts of damage can greatly deplete a ki users attacks, making it where attacks that would otherwise kill massively weakened characters, only pushes them back[150]. Ki users cannot put all of their ki and strength into an attack if parts of their body are broken/injured[151][152], they also lose half of their chi if something like one of their arms are badly injured or broken[153].Ki users that are able to ki sense cannot do it when their guard is dropped, such as when Vegeta was able to sneak attack Son Goku during the end of their fight in the Buu Saga[154]. Despite some ki users being able to reach blasts that can destroy planets through charged attacks or techniques[155][156][157][158], they have not shown to be able to tank such blasts themselves[159][160][161], with attacks that have[162] destroyed several[163] planets in the series[164] always killing the character. Even characters such as Majin Buu's body cannot withstand the energy of a planet exploding[165]. Using ki volley attacks come with the caveat of their aim being rather poor, making it harder to hit moving targets. If ki users are at all possessed, even by accident, their true self will be sleeping within, with the possessor needing to awaken them[166]. Even if awoken, they are immobilized and unable to move without the possessor giving them the ability to[167], even with them wanting to wake up, they cannot do it[168]. Specific waves can can suppress a ki users power, and put their consciousness to sleep[169]. If Ki users stamina is broken, they will unable to be able to continue fighting for a short while, this will also cancel out any ki attack they were attempting to use, including ultimate's[170], this also adds on that ki users guards are down while charging ultimate attacks. Their stamina can also be broken if a character moves far too fast and surprise attacks them while they're charging their ki[171]. Ki Users can also be grabbed out of charging their attacks[172]. When ki users radiate their Ki at its highest, their body is also freed the most, making them open to attacks and making them easy to possess[173].
- Unique Weaknesses: Son Gohan despises fighting, and will withstand tons of unnecessary damage to avoid fighting with someone, even if he is stronger than them and could easily end the conflict himself.
Note
- Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[174].
- The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.
- The events of Shin Budokai might have actually happened with the main timeline Gohan as it is revealed that Gohan through dreaming created a physical body in another timeline due to wanting to see his dad and once he wakes up he'll forget everything that happened. Thus it would explain why he doesn't remember anything from it.

Q: What about the planetary feats in Dragon Ball?
A: Planetary feats are normally done through their strongest charged blast, where they can gather ki to shoot out blast far beyond what the character is normally capable of[175], with blasts capable of[176] seriously damaging/destroying[177] the Earth along with completely obliterating the opponent[178], though they themselves are never capable of leaving this unscathed.
Frieza throws a destroy the planet death ball attack but it doesn't destroy the planet. Goku then interestingly notes the reason the planet didn't blow up is because Frieza was too scared of getting caught in the blast[179] . Vegeta's final flash is noted it's going to destroy the planet and Perfect Cell, who is beyond Vegeta, couldn't tank the blast and had to dodge it last second or it would've killed him[180]. Goku's kamehameha was going to destroy the earth and Cell cannot tank this blast, needing to regenerate[181]. Semi-Perfect Cell explosion was consistently noted it was going to destroy the planet and Gohan and it killed Goku[182]. Ultimate Gohan dies to an attack that destroys the earth, his guard was up too since this was when he was fighting Super Buu[183]. Kid Buu shoots a blast trying to destroy the planet, with Vegeta noting he's going to take himself out with it if he lets it off[184]. In Dragon Ball GT, Great Ape Baby Vegeta shoots a super galick gun that he claims will destroy Earth, when Goku is hit by it, he is knocked out to the point that he can't move for a good while, Elder Kai and Shin later state that Baby is going to shoot another blast that will destroy the planet on, greatly injuring Baby if he's caught in the Blast and will kill everyone on the planet if done[185]. Frieza destroyed the entire earth, killing Vegeta in the process[186]. In the Dragon Ball Super Manga, Gohan tells Goku that he doesn't need to hold anything back and can go all out because anything that happens to the Earth can be restored with Dende and the Dragon Balls. Yet, none of Goku's all out attacks destroy the planet but just heavily causes shockwaves around it[187]. Semi-Perfect Cell unleashes a several blast that destroys several islands Android 16 notes that the attacks are just strong enough to not kill Android 18[188].
In the fight of Trunks vs. Mecha Frieza, who is far stronger than his final form, Mecha Frieza immediately goes for his strongest attack, the Supernova. In the original Z anime King Kai even states this is ten times stronger than the power he used on Namek:
- DBZ Kai Version[189].
- Original DBZ Anime Version[190]. The attack is directly noted that it could destroy the planet, but doesn't because Trunks catches it, when Mecha Frieza proceeds to detonate it, the explosion is massive but the planet is still intact, implying Frieza must target the core in order to destroy the planet.
