From The Codex
"Mature Content"
This character or verse has mature themes and concepts, thus those of young age are ill-advised to look through these.

I have died a thousand deaths to prepare for this battle. My defeat is impossible. Yours, inevitable.
~ Geras to Raiden in Mortal Kombat 11
An artificial construct, built by Kronika, he faithfully serves her goal of restarting time and rewriting history. By Kronika’s design, Geras exists as a fixed point in time. Every time Geras is killed he is reborn, each time becoming more resilient against the manner of his death.
~ Mortal Kombat 11 bio

Background

Geras is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. An immortal, artificial construct created by the former Keeper of Time, Kronika, Geras is now one of the two Keepers of Time alongside Liu Kang, and watches over the timelines & the New Era with his new master & friend.

Geras made his debut in Mortal Kombat 11 as a playable character while serving as an antagonist in the game's Story Mode.

Geras returns in Mortal Kombat 1 as a playable character while also serving as a supporting character in the game's Story Mode.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of ’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Mortal Kombat 11
He is first seen collecting vials of Jinsei from the underground reservoir under the Shaolin Temple. When the past timeline versions of Liu Kang and Kung Lao arrive and defeat their present revenant counterparts, Geras blocks them from retrieving the stolen Jinsei and is promptly decapitated by Kung Lao's razor hat, only to reveal to the warriors his status as a fixed constant in time, his death undone in moments. He then battles the warriors and is defeated, but after the monks recover the vials of Jinsei and attempt to attack him again, the construct freezes time, allowing Geras recover the Jinsei, with Kronika arriving moments later, her servant presenting the vials of Jinsei to her. Though Geras wishes to eliminate the Shaolin warriors, Kronika advises against it, still needing their revenant selves to aid them.

After Sub-Zero and Scorpion destroy the Cyber Lin Kuei Assembly plant, Geras recruits the past and present incarnations of Kano with promises of a hefty payoff and the Black Dragon being superior in the New Era, to repair the damaged and comatose Sektor, while simultaneously inquiring if Sektor's design could be mass produced. After both Kano's agree to repair and begin production of more Cyber Lin Kuei, Geras assures the past incarnation of Erron Black that they will receive their payment.

After Special Forces arrive at the Black Dragon Fight Club to rescue the past incarnations of Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage, Geras arrives, ignoring or outright killing any soldier between himself and the Cage family, determined to kill them to erase Cassie Cage from the present. Geras fails in his mission and his body is destroyed by Cassie with a grenade, but even though he begins to reform, the Special Forces escape with the Cage family in tow.

When Raiden leads the united fronts of the Shaolin, Outworld's armies, and Special Forces to storm Kronika's Keep aboard Kharon's fleet, Geras appears before the Thunder God, wearing new armor, and battles Raiden to keep him from reaching Kronika. Though Raiden defeats Geras, the constructs mockingly reiterates his inability to die. This proves to his undoing, as Raiden binds him with a heavy chain and anchor, knocking Geras into the Blood Seas below, which is bottomless. Raiden states since Geras is unable to die by drowning, he will be confined to sink forever, never to escape.

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath
Suspicious with the familiar outsiders, Geras and Frost alerted to his creator Kronika, who is in disbelief, due to the fact the Void is inescapable. He was tasked to find Shang Tsung, Nightwolf, and Fujin. He, along with Frost and the Cyber Lin Kuei, arrive at Wu Shi Academy, attempting to capture them.

After Nightwolf defeats Geras, he cuts off his arms. One of Geras’ arms reattaches itself. Shang Tsung then opens a portal to Chaosrealm as Fujin uses some wind to blow Geras into it. Geras’ still unattached arm grabs Nightwolf's leg, but he simply kicks it into the portal. Shang Tsung claims that Havik will keep Geras "entertained".

Geras, wearing his new armor from the unaltered timeline when he fought Raiden, confronts Sindel and the rejuvenated Shao Kahn in the Soul Chamber, and demands their services to Kronika. Feeling betrayed by Kronika due to Kitana gaining the Outworld throne, Shao Kahn refuses his services and instead decides to attack the construct with Sindel. Being defeated, Sindel knocks a weakened Geras away where Shao Kahn approaches and mercilessly beats a downed Geras over the head repeatedly with his Wrath Hammer, completely destroying his head with one final slam. Despite his Immortality and regeneration capabilities, Geras is not seen again after his defeat in the Soul Chamber, leaving his status and whereabouts completely unknown. Until Liu Kang, as the new Keeper of Time revives and recreates him for the New Era.

Mortal Kombat 1
As a fixed point in time, Geras retains his memories of all the timelines he has experienced. When forging his new timeine, Liu Kang reconstructed Geras, changing him from a bruting enforcer to his wise friend and partner. For eons, Geras has respectfully served Liu Kang as the Guardian of the Hourglass, watching over the timeline for Liu Kang so he can fulfill his duty as the Protector of Earthrealm, making Geras a Keeper of Time alongside his friend.

Geras was one of, if not the first, beings that Liu Kang recreated upon restarting time. He watched over and advised Liu Kang as he reconstructed the realms, filled them with life, and then crafted a destiny for each mortal within. He was also present when Liu Kang relinquished his Titan powers and, fearing Liu Kang would have need of them again, stored them away inside a figuring gifted to Liu Kang by the Great Kung Lao. Afterwards, Geras was appointed the guardian of the Hourglass whilst Liu Kang took the role of demigod Protector of Earthrealm.

Geras remained in the courtyard of the Hourglass overlooking events for countless eons, only leaving to grant Liu Kang counsel, and he did so after noticing that Shang Tsung had deviated from the fate Liu Kang had crafted from him and returned once more to the role of a sorcerer. After being warned of this, Liu Kang asked his friend to continue monitoring the Hourglass for information. Doing so, Geras also discovered that the same individual had changed the fates of Quan Chi and General Shao as well, and informed Liu Kang of this, too. Though Liu Kang wondered if this individual could be Kronika, Geras stated that it was impossible, since Titans cannot be reborn after death.

Once more replaying the events in the Hourglass, Geras makes the startling realization that the strange individual is from another timeline that exists alongside the one Liu Kang created. With this in mind, Liu Kang realizes that he would need to request Sindel to call off her attack in Earthrealm by showing her how history is being manipulated. Geras warns Liu Kang that Liu Kang would require revealing his role as the Keeper of Time, to which Liu Kang says that he has no choice but to do so. In addition to this information, Liu Kang also summons Geras in Empress Sindel's presence in Outworld to prove to her that he was the Keeper of Time that restarted the universe, as Geras shows them their old lives in the previous timeline along with Kronika. Just then, General Shao and his forces enter, and Geras is trapped alongside Tanya & princesses Kitana and Mileena inside the Amulet of Shinnok. After Sindel and Liu Kang free them, the two groups join forces to attack the Deadly Alliance's fortress on Earthrealm, where they plan to attack with Emperor Yin's Dragon Army. There, they find out that the person behind the scenes was the Shang Tsung of the previous timeline, whom Liu Kang battled for the Hourglass. Their battle had two conclusions that created two separate timelines ruled by both respectively. Titan Shang Tsung betrays the Deadly Alliance, stating his intentions to destroy all life within this timeline and merge it into his own.

With Empress Sindel mortally wounded by her Dark counterpart and the Dragon Army awakening, the allies flee into the foothills near the fortress, where the mortal Shang Tsung poses a theory that his doppelganger is incorrect and that there are more than two timelines. Geras states that the theory is possible, but the search for more timelines could only be conducted by a Keeper of Time. Liu Kang reminds him that he gave up his power as a Titan, but Geras reveals that he had hidden it. He and Liu Kang leave to retrieve it, with Liu Kang remarking that Geras could have taken it for himself, but Geras replies that he is content to merely be a guardian and had faith in the vision Liu Kang created for the New Era.

After Liu Kang retrieves his Titan power, he searches the timelines and finds & reunites with a Titaness Kitana, who joins him as an ally. Shortly after, he also finds Titan versions of Raiden and Kung Lao, who all agree that Shang Tsung is a threat that must be dealt with. Shang Tsung himself invades the Hourglass courtyard, reveling in the knowledge that there are other timelines to conquer and that he can now simply destroy Liu Kang's by erasing his Hourglass. Commanding his minions to defeat Kang and his forces, Shang Tsung begins working to destroy the Hourglass while Geras works to stop him. When Liu Kang and his Titan allies are victorious, Shang Tsung is forced to flee. The Titans conclude that they must raise an army of other Titans and invade Shang Tsung's timeline to destroy him before he destroys the rest of them.

Geras accompanies them, battling for the fate of the multiverse in a second Battle of Armageddon, where he and the new Forces of Light are victorious.

Other

Standard Tactics: Geras will use hand to hand combat along with different temporal abilities on top of transforming his arms into different weapons.

Note: It is noted by Ed Boon that characters surviving fatal blows and X-Rays are purely an in-game only thing and that in cutscene only characters like Raiden could survive a bullet to the head.

Trivia

  • Geras' sand and time-control powers are likely based on the idiom "sands of time", which refers to the passage of time as being like sand in an hourglass.
  • Geras and Kronika are the first characters (except Taven in the Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon) in the Mortal Kombat series with the complete ability to manipulate time.
    • While other characters such as Raiden and Shang Tsung can also alter time, they do not have full control over it like Kronika and Geras who can completely affect the overall timeline.
      • While Raiden changed the timeline in Mortal Kombat (2011), he never had total control like Kronika and Geras.
      • Shang Tsung can restore himself to his youth while also bestowing longevity towards others[79], as he did to Erron Black, but just like with Raiden, he never had actual control of time itself.
  • Geras shares his name with the Greek god of old age, Γῆρας (Ancient Greek: Geras).
    • Additionally, the word 'geras' in Ancient Greek refers to the virtue where the more geras a man acquired in his life, the more fame, excellence and courage he was considered to have.
  • Geras is the first character with the ability to affect the match timer.

    • Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Spawn also share this trait, however they are non-canon guest characters.
    • Kung Lao decapitates Geras in Mortal Kombat 11's Story Mode, only for the latter's head to turn into sand and rematerializes itself on his body.
    • Geras also directly states that he exists at a fixed point in time, and thusly can never truly be eliminated.
    • This is further supported more with interactions with Cassie and Skarlet.
  • In a Kombat Kast #1, Geras was stated by Stephanie Brownback to be the Mortal Kombat 11 equivalent of a mini-boss character like Goro, Kintaro, Motaro, Moloch and others.
  • In early builds of Mortal Kombat 11, Geras had blue-colored blood. In later builds, the color of his blood is red like most of the other characters. No official statement explaining this change has been released.
  • When the roster section was first added to the Mortal Kombat 11 website Geras was referred to as Terminas. In the files for Mortal Kombat 11, Geras is labeled as "Ter", this suggests that Geras' original name was Terminas before being changed at some point through development.
  • Due to his immense lifespan, Geras has many interesting interactions in the Arcade about different parts of history.
    • Geras is aware of the Tarkatans's well-known, long-standing servitude within the Outworld Empire.

  • Geras is the first character with a delayed stun ability, this being his Temporal Advantage ability. Unlike most stuns, Geras can land certain attacks that would otherwise end a character's combo should they use a traditional stun ability.
    • Due to this, Geras is the third character with a non-traditional stun ability, the first being Jason Voorhees and the second being Leatherface.
  • Despite using a stone sword during his Fatal Blow, Geras never uses one during gameplay.
  • The way the opponent disintegrates during Geras's Paused In Time Brutality may be a reference to the Marvel Superhero film Avengers: Infinity War, where the main antagonist Thanos disintegrates half of all life in the Universe after amassing all six Infinity Stones in the films ending.
  • In the character select menu and using Johnny Cage's Announcer Voice Pack, Johnny Cage will nickname Geras "Busta Tymes", this nickname is a reference to fellow real-life American rapper, Busta Rhymes.
  • In the Arcade, many characters question where Geras is from during interactions, to which he always responds by saying he "hails" from Kronika's Keep, where Kronika created him.
    • This Keep is never seen in the Story Mode, however it makes its debut as part of the Aftermath DLC Expansion.
