Background
Jowy Atreides, later Jowy Atreides-Blight, is a young boy from Kyaro Town in Highland, who serves as first a main protagonist, later main antagonist, of Suikoden II. Jowy was raised by the incredibly wealthy Atreides family, spending most of his time with childhood friends Riou and Nanami, before getting recruited into Highland's Unicorn Youth Brigade.

While still only young men, Jowy and Riou were taken to join the Unicorn Youth Brigade serving under the Highland Army. They and their allies fought well, eventually able to sign a peace treaty with the New State Army and end the war. However, right as they were to be sent home, Jowy and Riou became caught in a staged attack by Highland in order to make it appear as though New State broke their peace agreement. The Unicorn Brigade was massacred, leaving Jowy and Riou as the only survivors. The two jumped off a cliff to safety, where they were separated. Jowy ended up in the small town of Toto, where he was taken in by a small family. The young daughter of the family, Pilika, looked up to Jowy and considered him to be her uncle. Much time passed, and eventually Jowy got word of a boy his age being taken prisoner in a Mercenary Fort. Realizing that this was Riou, Jowy infiltrated the Fort and broke him out. Together, both he and Riou fled back to their hometown to Kyaro. As soon as Jowy returned, however, his family was disgusted with him for supposedly betraying Highland, and disowned him. Jowy decided to join the army being formed by the City-State of Jowston alongside Riou, with the two being approached by a woman named Leknaat and granted one of the 27 True Runes; Jowy receiving the Black Sword Rune. He then helped Riou infiltrate a Highland camp, during which Jowy met a young princess known as Jilia Blight, before being ambushed by Highland soldiers. After telling Riou to run, Jowy held the soldiers back. Unfortunately, he was captured and brought to the Mad Prince, Luca Blight. Luca spared Jowy, and Jowy decided to give his allegiance to Luca, secretly for his own goals. He assassinated Annabelle, a high-ranking member of the City-States, before revealing his new allegiances to his former friends. All the while serving under Luca, Jowy was secretly plotting his downfall so that he may become King. One crucial step of this plan was convincing Luca into letting him marry Jilia Blight, becoming Jowy Atreides-Blight. Once Luca Blight was finally killed by Riou, Jowy became King of Highland, and continued the war to serve his own goals. Riou continued to foil his plans, however, and he was forced to retreat. After securing a secretive home for Jilia and Pilika to stay in, Jowy fled back to the old Unicorn Youth Brigade camp, where Riou confronted him at last. Jowy attacked his friend, but Riou refused to fight back. Jowy eventually found himself unable to fight, and begged Riou to take the Black Sword Rune from him and end his life. Riou once again refused, and instead used the Bright Shield Rune to heal Jowy. Wanting to be forgiven for his sins, Jowy joined Riou and Nanami as they travelled across the world. |
