~ Poseidon's anger for Atlantis' destruction
Kratos, before you reach Athens, there is a task you must complete. This beast is Hydra, it has terrorized my seas for far too long. Your skills are admirable, but you will need assistance, you will need the power of the gods. Take this weapon Kratos, take this power, and use it to defeat your enemies. Go with the gods Kratos, go forth, in the name of Olympus!
~ Poseidon to Kratos in God of War
Poseidon's Wrath

Background

Poseidon is the Olympian God of the seas, rivers, water, storms, tempests, winds, hurricanes, rain, floods, drought, earthquakes and horses. He also is the King of the Oceans and Atlantis. In terms of power, he is surpassed in eminence only by his brother Zeus, with his other brother, Hades, being his equal. He appears as an ally in God of War and a major antagonist in God of War III.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Poseidon’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Great War
Like most of his siblings, Poseidon was swallowed by the Titan King Cronos. When he was released, he fought alongside his brother, Zeus, in the Great War of the Gods and Titans. During a great battle between the Gods and the Titans, Poseidon aided his brother Hades to bring down the mighty Atlas. After Atlas saved his uncle Cronos from having his soul captured by Hades, Atlas was electrocuted by Poseidon's thunder, bringing him to his knees. Hades reacted swiftly and with his fiery chains he grasped onto Atlas. With Poseidon further electrocuting Atlas, Hades was able to capture the Titan's soul, making him stronger. After the Blade of Olympus was created and the Titans were banished to the Tartarus; the pit of torment, Poseidon was given dominion over all seas. He took Amphitrite as his wife and watched over the waters of Greece, being worshiped by sailors to grant safe passage in his waters.

Wager of the Gods
Poseidon briefly appeared as a contender in the wager of the gods, a contest in which they would each choose one mortal to represent them. The ultimate goal was to capture the healing elixir, Ambrosia. At first, Poseidon kept his champion a secret from the others until finally revealing the Theran warlord Herodius as his champion. Herodius entered said contest to save his people from a plague secretly created by Poseidon, but never returned, as Kratos and his Spartans killed both Herodius and his army. After the Spartans took Herodius' ship, Poseidon, enraged at Kratos for costing him the wager, unleashed his Hippocampi upon the ship. Although the Spartans survived, Poseidon created a massive whirlpool which dragged the Spartans closer and closer to the bottom of the sea. He then sent the Sea Snake to kill the Spartans, but the beast was killed by Kratos. The Spartans docked safely at their destination, infuriating Poseidon even further.

Aiding Kratos
For a period of time, the vicious beast known as the Hydra terrorized the Aegean Sea, until Kratos, guided by Athena, was called upon. Arriving upon a mess of shipwrecks, Kratos battled the various heads of the Hydra. During this feat, he was met by Poseidon, who granted Kratos the gift of Poseidon's Rage. With this magical ability, Kratos was able to cast a stream of lightning through his body into his enemies, destroying them or weakening them enough so that he may finish them off. This ability would also be of important use while battling against the Hydra King, the strongest and largest of the Hydra's heads. After destroying the beast, the nightmare the Hydra had caused for many sailors in the Aegean Sea came to an end. Poseidon was also given a section devoted to him in Pandora's Temple. In this section, Kratos obtained Poseidon's Trident, granting him the ability to breathe underwater and dive.

Atlantis' Destruction
After Kratos receives visions of his mother's whereabouts in the temple of Atlantis, the Spartan warrior traversed to Atlantis to investigate. Attempting to stop the Ghost of Sparta, Poseidon had unleashed Scylla, Scylla's brood, and his personal army; his "children", the Tritons to put an end to the former's quest. This attempt failed as Kratos defeated Scylla and inadvertently freed the imprisoned Titaness of fire, Thera, which irreversibly shattered the foundations of Atlantis, causing it to sink into the ocean.

While Poseidon does not appear physically, the Ocean God would later attack Kratos with a massive whirlpool and other hazards as the Spartan tries to make his way back to the now sunken Atlantis. Later, he manifests himself through one of his shattered statues. Infuriated with Kratos for releasing Thera, and having her destroy Atlantis, his beloved city, he vows he will never forget Kratos' actions, promising he would one day answer for them.

The Second Titanomachy
Poseidon is among the Gods who are listening to Zeus, who declares that they must unite against the new threat of Kratos, formerly the God of War and now a rogue mortal. Once the walls of Olympus begin to tremble, Poseidon and the other Gods ready themselves to face the Titans who have been saved from their banishment in the Great War by Kratos using the Loom of Fate.

After sharing looks with his brother Zeus, Poseidon dives off Mount Olympus, right into Epimetheus' chest, knocking him off the mountain, killing him almost instantly. Poseidon then dives into a large body of water at the base of the mountain, summoning a tendril from below that grabs Gaia's arm and begins pulling her. After Kratos defeats his minions, Poseidon then emerges within a watery construct in his image, projecting Hippocampi from his chariot. Poseidon sends his steeds to attack and restrain Gaia while he himself struggles with both Gaia and Kratos.

Death
After a vicious battle, Gaia punches his chest, sending Kratos on a collision course with Poseidon's human form, which Kratos rips out of the watery construct and onto a platform. There he closes in on the weakened Poseidon, who warns Kratos that the destruction of Olympus would destroy the entire world. Kratos is unfazed by this, and proceeds to beat Poseidon uncontrollably; slamming his uncle's face repeatedly against a wall, and hitting him with his own head, before throwing him to a nearby wall. Poseidon then made a desperate attempt to escape and survive, but is unable to reach the edge and is grabbed by Kratos, who then proceeds to crush his eyes and finally break his neck, killing the sea god once and for all. This last struggle is seen through Poseidon's own perspective.

As Poseidon's lifeless body falls to the water below, his death causes a tidal wave that floods most of Greece. This would probably explain why the Desert of Lost Souls does not exist anymore.

In Poseidon's Chamber, Kratos finds a note Poseidon left where it is indicated he became interested in Pandora's power over Olympus and suspicious of Zeus' intentions, expressing fear his brother has changed for the worst.

The note reads: A mere girl, somehow she is the key to the labyrinth. I brought this statue here, but so far have learned nothing. That mortal Daedalus, in his madness, has devised a way to shield secrets from even my far-reaching view. This does not bode well. I fear Zeus is no longer the brother I once knew - Poseidon

Another note indicates Poseidon's wrath and frustration towards Zeus, citing his brother's refusal to provide Olympus safe harbor from the storms that are brewing. What Poseidon means by that last comment is not clear, but it might allude to the apocalyptic future that Poseidon may have foreseen i.e. the destruction of Olympus. Even though Poseidon fought alongside his brother, he alone still had misgivings about Zeus.

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Weapon Mastery (Can wield his trident deftly, grants people under allegiance to him weapons of his, this includes his sword, blades, hammer, war hammers, spears, lances, armor, etcetera), Magic (Noted by Mimir the powers of the gods in the Greek Pantheon use powerful magic), Accelerated Development (Passive; Physical Stats and Abilities. As Olympians grow older they grow far more powerful), Abstract Existence (Physical, Primordial Source; All gods embody different concepts[1] of reality[2], with their deaths causing the concepts they embody to be affected, such as the death of Helios depriving Greece of the sun), Astral Projection (Can create an astral form to speak to Kratos), Immortality (Ageless; Gods are eternal beings that are ageless and can never die from age. Life and Death Immunity; As stated by Gaia Kratos losing his godly powers was described as him "rendered mortal, "vulnerable to the arms of death", meaning gods are not bound by death. Noted during God of War 1 that the only way to kill Ares was to get Pandora's Box), Supernatural Resilience (Gods can survive lethal wounds and continue fighting), Regeneration (At least Low-Mid; Comparable to other gods who can regenerate from being stabbed through the stomach, leaving a massive hole), Fate Protection (The Sisters of Fate control destiny and plot out the fate of one's entire life), Non-Standard Interaction (Abstract Interaction and Metaphysical Interaction; Should upscale from a fully depowered Kratos who can fully kill souls, which means he is destroying all four parts of the soul, which explained by Mimir, include form, direction, mind, & luck. Can harm various gods and titans all who embody different concepts of reality, with their deaths causing the concepts they embody to be affected), Avatar Creation & Transformation (Shapeshifting; Can create a massive elemental form that serves as an avatar as his true body hides in the sea), Animal Manipulation (Can control the Hippocampi), Water Manipulation (Fought with the sea itself, caused a massive whirlpool upon landing into the sea), Electricity Manipulation (Can use his trident to shoot out a massive lightning attack, harmed Atlas with a massive lightning attack. Bestowed Kratos with Poseidon's Rage, magic that surrounds one with a circle of electricity and summoned lightning bolts from the sky that strikes down enemies), Power Bestowal (Poseidon bestows various weapons, and abilities to his followers. Bestowed Kratos with Poseidon's Rage), Air Manipulation (Has shown to give his followers weapons and abilities such as the Spear of Poseidon that causes a water and whirlwind), Forcefield Creation (Bestowed people with Depths of Oceanus, creates a powerful shield that sends enemies flying back and generates a protective bubble around teammates), Bestowed people with Salvation of Atlantis, creates a magical barrier in front of one, enemies that come into contact with the barrier and damaged and stunned while allies are buffed with extra defense), Healing & Restoration (Given his followers weapons and abilities such as the Lance of Poseidon, a magical spear that has healing properties. Bestowed people with Boreas' Ring, slams a healing ring of frost to regenerate health and magic for team-mates. Equipment

  • Poseidon's Trident: Trident was Poseidon's primary weapon and one of his primary symbols it was a gift from Cyclopes after Zeus, freed them from Tartarus.
  • Battle Armor of Poseidon: The Battle Armor of Poseidon is an armor set of Multiplayer exclusive to warriors who have aligned themselves to Poseidon. Each part of it is unlocked by killing a number of enemy players on any game mode while aligned to the god of the seas. It adds +4 Health, + 12% Physical Resist. The Godly Armor of Poseidon adds +4 Health, +13% Physical Resist, +10% Elemental Resist.
  • Blade of Poseidon: The Blade of Poseidon is a Multiplayer weapon only available to players aligned with Poseidon. The blade has three edges which seem to be made of a blue metal, resembling the trident of Poseidon itself. It is charged with the icy energy of the sea, which can be released through its special attacks. Also, it has a very special feature no other weapon has: each time it delivers three consecutive hits to an opponent, it creates a blue orb, which follows the user. After some time, the orb will be absorbed by the warrior, granting him a small quantity of magic. Up to two orbs can follow the player at once. If Nereid's Embrace is performed while the player has an orb beside him, it will release one or two extra waves of energy, depending on how many orbs were around the warrior, thus causing much more damage. In resume, this weapon is very useful to keep enemies away and to recharge magic in battle. It adds +10% Physical Damage; +5% Elemental Damage; +5% Physical Resist. The Godly Blade of Poseidon adds +11% Physical Power, +10% Elemental Power, +6% Physical Resist.
  • Cestus Of Poseidon: The Cestus of Poseidon are a pair of gauntlets unique for those aligned with Poseidon. Wielding these in battle, all enemies will become targets of the icy chaos brought forth by this Cestus. The Cestus of Poseidon are huge gauntlets with the typical sea theme. The upper part of the cestus is a silver octopus whose middle tentacles end in sharp blades. As for the lower part of the cestus, it seems to be made of the scales of some sort of crustacean monstrosity as it has the same texture as the scales of the Hippocampi. It adds +7 Health; +3% Physical Power; +10% Elemental Power.
  • Gauntlets of Poseidon: The Gauntlets of Poseidon are DLC Multiplayer weapons only available to players aligned with Poseidon. Each gauntlet is a large conch with small spikes on the front part and iron pieces attached to it from behind, where the warrior places his arms. These gauntlets harness the ice powers of Poseidon through powerful elemental beams. It might be desirable for players who attack from medium range, being capable of tossing foes in the air and even freezing them from such distance, which leaves them vulnerable to any attack. With the freezing might of Poseidon flowing through them, these powerful shells are the perfect weapon for a loyal servant of the lord of the seas. In the Trial of the Gods, this gauntlet is unquestionably one of the most versatile weapon, especially when teaming up with an adequate Ares warrior. The Loyalty's Cannon is capable of freezing any non-boss creeps (except Chimaera) in an instant. Shattering an Ice sculpture takes significantly less effort than defeating the creep normally. Moreover, then Loyalty's Conon is capable of healing an ally. It adds +7% Health; +5% Physical Power; +5% Elemental Power.
  • Kraken Armor: The Kraken Armor is one of the many sets of armor that appears in God of War: Ascension's multiplayer. It is exclusive for warriors of Poseidon. The armor is mainly nautical themed, sporting many tentacles and fish-like appendages. It can be assumed that the design borrows heavily from the design of the Kraken from God of War II as the tentacles that wrap around the loincloth are almost identical, even the left shoulder plate looks like its huge eye. The helmet is quite similar to the Kraken's head as it has small spikes jutting out the back of it. Like standard armor, the Kraken Armor sports both shin and arm guards however they seem to be of no particular design. It should be noted that a warrior wearing the armor has war paint decorating their body. It adds +10% Physical Resist, +6% Cooldown Reduction. The Godly Kraken Armor adds +3 Health, +10% Physical Resist, +8% Cooldown Reduction.
  • Lance of Poseidon: The Lance of Poseidon is a weapon only available to players aligned with Poseidon. It adds +3% Physical Damage; +12% Elemental Damage. The Godly Lance of Poseidon adds +3% Physical Power, +13% Elemental Power, +9% Elemental Resist.
  • Maul of Poseidon: The Maul of Poseidon is a weapon from Multiplayer only available to players aligned with Poseidon. The frontal part of the hammer is rounded and covered by Kraken's carapace, which still has small spikes on it; the back of it has three razored like pointy structures and the hilt seems to be made of a dark metal. The Maul of Poseidon is made to deliver whirlwind attacks to opponents, often tossing them in the air. Unlike the War Hammer of Poseidon, this weapon has no team support properties and is mainly focused in combat. By charging its specials, their range is significantly increased, allowing it to hit packs of enemies at once and then knock them away with strong blows. Carrying the wrath of Poseidon on its spiked surface, this maul brings the destruction of a sea storm to the arena. It adds +5% Physical Power; +9% Physical Resist. The Godly Maul of Poseidon adds +11% Physical Power, +11% Physical Resist.
  • Olympus Armor of Poseidon: The Olympus Armor of Poseidon is a powerful DLC set of armor of Multiplayer. Powerful armor exclusive for warriors aligned to Poseidon, this oceanic armor grants its champion both resistance and power, being especially effective against warriors of Zeus. It adds +10% Physical Power; +8% Elemental Power; +17% Elemental Resist.
  • Spear of Poseidon: The Spear of Poseidon is a Multiplayer weapon only available to players with alignment to Poseidon. It is a silver triple pointed spear that resembles the trident of Poseidon itself, although the tips are aligned in a different way. This spear and the Sword of Poseidon are the most offensive weapons the god of the seas can offer his servants, carrying the greatest amount of physical power among them. This versatile weapon can perform powerful watery bursts that both toss enemies away and heal and shield nearby allies, being recommended for those who prefer strong medium ranged attacks but also like to aid teammates in battle. A skilled warrior with a Spear of Poseidon in hand is an unstoppable flood against the enemy team. It adds +10% Physical Power; +9% Elemental Power; +9% Physical Resist. The Godly Spear of Poseidon adds +11% Physical Power; +10% Elemental Power; +11% Physical Resist.
  • Sword of Poseidon: The Sword of Poseidon is a weapon only available to players with alignment to Poseidon. With a silver and pointy blade and what seems to be a crustacean like lower part, this sword is made to deliver devastating blows to an opponent, being useful for those who prefer short ranged and powerful attacks. The Sword of Poseidon has enough power to destroy anyone who dares to face its user either with a rushing uppercut and ground slam combo or with a flurry of unblockable icy blows that tosses enemies in the air. The chaos brought by this weapon in the arena can only be compared to the destruction caused by the whirlpool it came from. It adds +10% Physical Power; +7% Elemental Power. The Godly Sword of Poseidon adds +10% Physical Power, +10% Elemental Power, +8% Cooldown Reduction.
  • The Trident of Olympus: The Trident of Olympus is a weapon in God of War: Ascension multiplayer available only to warriors who sworn an oath to Poseidon. The Trident of Olympus is Poseidon's very own Trident and is made of both rock and water. The water flooding through the weapon is visible through the several cracks on the weapon. This weapon harnesses the power of the ocean and can be used to create whirlpools or toss enemies high in the sky, using icy hits. When performing a brutal kill with the weapon, the enemy will pierced on the Trident before being raised in the air and thrown down. It adds +10% Elemental Power; +11% Physical Resist; +9% Elemental Resist.
  • War Armor of Poseidon: The War Armor of Poseidon is a set of armor only available to warriors pledged to Poseidon in Multiplayer. It adds +10% Elemental Power, +10% Physical Resist. The Godly War Armor of Poseidon adds +11% Elemental Power, +10% Physical Resist, +13% Elemental Resist.
  • War Hammer of Poseidon: The War Hammer of Poseidon is a Multiplayer weapon only available to players aligned with Poseidon. The main part of the weapon seems to be a huge sea shell, which has been put together with a pointy end. This hammer is mainly a defensive weapon, and the best weapon of Poseidon - if not the best one of the whole Multiplayer - in terms of physical resistance. It has the power to slow down enemies in ice, perform cooperative moves, create protective auras and heal multiple allies at once, focusing much more on team support techniques than on offensive ones. This makes it fitting for Trial of the Gods mode, for example, where only two players must face entire hordes of monsters and are occasionally in danger. Any injured warrior can find safe harbor beside a teammate with this symbol of Poseidon's power. It adds +3% Elemental Power; 12% Physical Resist. The Godly Hammer of Poseidon adds +3% Elemental Power; 13% Physical Resist; +9% Elemental Resist.

Notable Techniques

  • Atmokinesis: As the God of the sea, Poseidon possesses the power to manipulate water, storms, and lightning, able to create strong waves and violent storms to bring the rage of the ocean upon those who anger him. Atmokinesis breaks down into several abilities.
  • Cryokinesis: Poseidon can manipulate and control ice. His water magic allows him to freeze opponents.
  • Hydrokinesis: Poseidon can manipulate and control water, ranging from tidal waves and whirlpools to a watery construct in his image. Since water does not retain a shape, it is clear that Poseidon's control over water is not only immense but precise, in retaining the size and shape of his Titan form.
    • Eco-Hydrokinesis: Poseidon has complete control over the element of water. He can control all the water in the world.
    • Water Breathing: Poseidon can breathe underwater.
  • Electrokinesis: Poseidon can generate and manipulate electricity. He used this power to help Hades in defeating Atlas. In God of War, he bestowed Kratos with a small portion of his electrokinetic power. In God of War III, he uses his trident to shoot bolts of electricity at Kratos and Gaia.
    • Hydro-Electrokinesis: Due to his control over the seas and its storms, this accounts for Poseidon's electricity-based abilities.
  • Immortality: As a god, he is immortal and can live forever. Like his brothers and the other Olympians, Poseidon doesn't age and is not affected by time, only divine weapons, other Gods, and Titans can kill him.
  • Flight: Poseidon was able to propel or accelerate himself through the air with great speed and force.
  • Power Granting: Poseidon can grant powers to his followers, as shown when he gave Kratos the power of Poseidon's Rage. He also gave the Redeemed Warrior great resilience, allowing them to sustain massive amounts of damage before death as well as the power to use the waters of the deep to aid them in battle by creating Walls of Water and even creating Sea Storms right in the midst of battle without being near a source of water, with these waters they are able to heal themselves and allies. Poseidon also grants his followers the use of Cryokinesis, allowing them to create large spires of ice and even freezing opponents to crush them.
  • Shapeshifting: He could reform himself into a massive, elemental form resembling a Titan. This form, in his own image, was entirely water-based, with rocks forming details on his chest and head. In this form he is at his most powerful, with all of his powers and strength greatly augmented. However, his measure still pales in comparison with the Titans.
  • Regeneration: He can regenerate himself. In God of War III, when you chop off one of several Hippocampi hands (sting/tentacles) and do not do further damage to it, it will regenerate again.
  • Teleportation: As the ruler of Atlantis, Poseidon can teleport to anywhere via sea and water.
  • Astral Projection: Poseidon was able to project an image of himself to communicate with Kratos.
  • Plague Creation: Poseidon was able to create a plague to infect the village of Thera to encourage Herodius to search for the Ambrosia.
  • Invincibility: When in the waters of the deep, Poseidon is invincible and all of his attributes are multiplied greatly. However the farther away he is from the sea, the less of his "true" power he can exhibit. This was the case with his battle with Kratos, as they were several miles away from the sea at the battle.
  • Hippocampi Control: In elemental form, below his waist a large jet of water coming from a rock formation was maintained, with Hippocampi protruding out of it, which Poseidon used actively in his battle with Gaia and Kratos. He could also control them even without his elemental form, but the creatures themselves are smaller, one even managing to wrap around his forearm; this is seen when the gods looked down from Mount Olympus to the climbing Titans below. He can even use the Hippocampi as makeshift arms to battle Kratos and Gaia.
  • Blade of Poseidon
    • Tidal Sweep: Creates a powerful wave of energy that sweeps enemies off their feet. Adds a magical counter on hit.
    • Nereid's Embrace: Every hit with this weapon applies a charge. Nereid's Embrace releases a wave of energy that grows in power with each charge.
  • Cestus of Poseidon
    • Tidal Reckoning: Summon a hydro-tornado around yourself that juggles enemies if hit.
    • Loyalty's Leap: Launch into the air for up to 5 seconds. Can dash in any direction, fire a projectile attack, or slam into the ground. Allies are healed while the special is active.
  • Gauntlets of Poseidon
    • Frozen Reckoning: A powerful ice projectile that launches enemies into the air.
    • Loyalty's Cannon: Summon a powerful ice beam that stuns and potentially freezes enemies if charged for several seconds; friendly will be healed by the beam instead.
  • Lance of Poseidon
    • Atlantean Fealty: Summons an elemental wave that shields teammates and sends slowed enemies flying back.
    • Boreas' Ring: Slam a healing ring of frost to regenerate health and magic for allies.
  • Maul of Poseidon
    • Poseidon's Typhoon: Summons an icy whirlwind that sends enemies flying. Doubles cool-down time.
    • Maelstrom of Amphirite: Slams down an icy storm and knock enemies back. Doubles cool-down time.
  • Spear of Poseidon
    • Burst of Vindication: A medium range attack that knocks back enemies and slows them. Heals nearby allies. Chargeable for additional damage or healing.
    • Depths of Oceanus: Create a powerful shield that sends enemies flying and protects allies. Shield grants additional health.
  • Sword of Poseidon
    • Arion's Life: A dashing uppercut attack that launches opponents up and slams them down. Co-op move increases damage and range.
      • Arion's Life Co-Op Manuver: Leap from ally high in the air, slashing the sword vertically three times before slamming it into the ground. Slightly heals ally.
    • Glacial Condemnation: Infuses the sword with magical ice energy. Every attack creates an elemental explosion that launches enemies.
  • The Trident of Olympus
    • Titanic Obedience: Spin the trident and dash forward with a whirlwind attack.
    • Cecrops' Punishment: Launch an opponent and levitate in the air, plunging ones spear into the ground.
  • War Hammer of Poseidon
    • Frozen Wave: A powerful wave attack that slows and knocks enemies back. Co-op maneuver greatly increases damage and range.
      • Frozen Wave co-op maneuver: Leaps from an ally high in the air and perform and unblockable ground slam that slows and knocks back any enemy caught in its radius.
    • Brutal Haven: A Slam attack that creates an aura of defense. Stomping heals allies.

Other

Standard Tactics: Poseidon has shown that in battle he will hide in the sea and create a massive titan-like avatar form of himself to fight his opponents along with the hippocampi.

Weaknesses: The further he is from the sea, the weaker his power is.

Trivia

  • Coincidentally, Poseidon's voice actor in the first game, Fred Tartasciore, also voiced Poseidon in the Nintendo 3DS game, Kid Icarus Uprising. Tartasciore also voices the character of Magnus in said game.
  • His character for God of War III was the most complex for the developers; it took them about 6 to 12 months to fully design his monstrous form.
  • Poseidon is the first God seen in God of War and the first boss battle in God of War III.
  • In God of War: Ascension, Poseidon's gigantic one-eyed son Polyphemus appears as a Titan and the boss of the desert multiplayer map.
  • It is interesting to note that Poseidon was investigating the recent decisions of Zeus for the manufacture of the Labyrinth, and its mysterious prisoner. He took to view that recently, Zeus was not the brother he knew before, as Zeus was infected with Fear. Unlike his brothers, Poseidon showed more resilience to the evils of Pandora's Box, and although corrupted as well, it was not to the extent of his brothers.
  • Poseidon appears much older in God of War than in God of War III. His beard, for example, is whiter and bushier than in God of War III. Like Poseidon, many Gods looked different in God of War than they did in following games because, at that time, possible sequels were not yet certain.
    • It may also be because Poseidon, like the other gods, could change his appearance.
    • If this is this case though, Poseidon's true form is unclear. It seems likely that his older appearance is his true form, but as a god, he wishes to appear youthful.
  • Poseidon's chambers adorn statues on the wall that look like Poseidon did in God of War.
  • During his fight with Kratos, Poseidon mentions "Atlantis will be avenged!", referencing the events of God of War: Ghost of Sparta.
    • It's strange that during his fight with Kratos, Poseidon didn't mention the death of his own son, Theseus as he did mention the destruction of Atlantis. It is likely due to the fact that Kratos returned in time and defeated Zeus, creating a timeline where he did not have to travel through the Island of Creation and avoiding his battle with Theseus. Some other events that happened during such travel, like the battle against Alrik, proved in his tortured note scrambled in Underworld makes the second option the most likely.
  • Poseidon's chariot is pulled by the Hippocampi, creatures with the bodies of horses and the tails of fish. This may seem strange as horses are not aquatic creatures, but Poseidon when challenged to create a beautiful land animal in Greek mythology, Poseidon created these horses and became his signature creatures. In ancient Greek mythology, his chariot was pulled by the Hippocampi as well.
  • By comparison, it is very clear that the designs for Poseidon's monstrous watery form were based heavily off the older artwork made for the Titan Oceanus, who was considered for (but cut from) God of War II. It is said by the developers in a God of War III bonus video that Oceanus' concept was partially used in designing Poseidon.
  • Poseidon was seemingly infected with the evil Anger after Kratos opened Pandora's Box.
  • After being weakened, the glowing tattoos on Poseidon's body become very faint and slowly glimmer. This suggests the tattoos somehow represent his vital signs.
  • As a powerful god and having the power to control the seas, Poseidon could have killed the Hydra with ease. However, Athena could have planned to leave this task to Kratos, so that he could acquire the Poseidon's Rage ability, empowering Kratos and helping him to defeat Ares in an easier way.
    • The God of War novel reveals that Athena indeed convinced Poseidon that the Hydra was sent by Ares. Since Zeus had forbidden the Gods from warring with one another directly, Poseidon's intervention would breach this rule, so he resorts to giving Kratos the power to destroy the Hydra instead.
  • Poseidon appears briefly in Bit of War when the time of the gods comes to an end and Olympus makes a desperate attempt to regain power.
  • In the Chamber of the Flame in God of War III, there are pictures of Poseidon with tentacles in the background; they could either belong to the Kraken or Scylla, if the tentacles do belong to one of the said monsters then it is highly likely that Poseidon was the one who sent them to attack Kratos in previous installments of the series, which was proven for Scylla as she was the Guardian of Atlantis.
  • In God of War III, Poseidon is one of three boss characters in the game where Kratos does not gain any additional abilities or weapons upon the latter's death. The other two is Poseidon's father Cronos and his brother Zeus.
  • Currently, it is unknown exactly how Poseidon's death and the subsequent rising of the oceans affected other realms outside of Greece.
