The Annoying Dog

From The Codex

Jump to navigationJump to search

The Annoying Dog is a dog figure that created Undertale & Deltarune. While he may appear as a harmless white dog, its soon shown that he has reality warping powers such as appearing anywhere at a moment's notice. He can even take artifacts that could help The Human greatly on their journey. He's mostly seen around Papyrus, possibly implying that's it's his favorite character. He returns in Deltarune.

Explanations

Monster Check Stats

Monster's check stats are quite dubious for a couple of reasons:

On top of these, genocide route has the check stats differ too with confusing changes, while the human's killing intent is a reason behind this, some characters have their defense stats raise such as Papyrus'. There's also inconsistencies even in these routes, for example The Human at a level 3 killing intent one-shots Toriel[29] yet The Human at level 13 can still only chip damage Asgore[30].

It should also be noted, the argument that Toriel sent Asgore flying with her fire, has an issue it was an off guard hit[31] which it has been shown off-guard/betrayal kills can one-shot monsters as they lowered their guard[32].

Magic vs. Physicality

Monsters are mostly made of magic while human beings are mostly made of water[33] making humans with their physical forms far stronger then them[33]. However humans have lost the ability to use magic by proxy[33].

Monsters bodies being made of magic has their body physically attuned to their SOUL[34]. Due to this, monsters that don't want to fight have their defenses weaken[34] and one with more killing intent and crueller intentions will inflict more damage on them[34]. This is due to a monsters SOUL being made of love, hope, and compassion[35].

Monsters bodies being made of magic also makes it where they do not possess enough physical matter to take concentrations of determination[36].

In the Undertale 10th Anniversary Livestream Gerson reveals that humanity once had magic too but creating the barrier that separated humans and monsters caused them to use up all their magic[37].

Trivia

  • The Annoying Dog represents Toby Fox himself; the Steam Greenlight trailer and the original Kickstarter video show the Annoying Dog stating this.
    • In the game files, some sprites of the Annoying Dog contain the word "tobydog."
  • The Annoying Dog steals Toriel's phone if the protagonist waits for her in the hallway of the Ruins.[38] While Toriel gets her phone back once the protagonist proceeds to the next room, the Annoying Dog apparently steals it again and eats it, as attempting to call her from the Artifact Room will result in ringing "coming from inside your inventory", where the Annoying Dog is. This is likely why Toriel does not pick up the phone until the epilogue.
  • The sound effect used for the Annoying Dog first originated as a sound effect for Mario Paint.
  • If Papyrus is called in the Artifact Room, he notes there is something annoying about the room but cannot identify what, referring to the Annoying Dog.[39]
  • The Annoying Dog flying through the wall by ignoring the collision may be a reference to the Steam Greenlight trailer which tells the viewer to not go into the Artifact Room because there is no collision yet.
  • When talking to Bratty and Catty at the end of the True Pacifist Route, Catty mentions petting a "little white cat."[40] Bratty then corrects Catty, saying it was a dog. It is most likely this dog was actually the Annoying Dog.
  • The breed has been confirmed to be a Shiba Inu thanks to a part of the Spamton Sweepstakes that says "Best Inu" and a picture of the Annoying dog above it. This may have been a retcon though, since it is named "tinypom" in the game files for the Demo, its walking sprite is named "spr_tinypomwalk", and its bark "snd_pombark", for example. The Annoying Dog is most likely a White Teacup Pomeranian, and/or a small white Shiba Inu, because if you look up "Tiny White Pomeranian," then White Teacup Pomeranians pop up, and they look like the annoying dog.
  • Originally, if the player beat the game fast enough, the Annoying Dog wearing a bikini would appear at the ending screen. However, it didn't make it into the final game.[41][42] This references the Metroid series, where the main character, Samus Aran, wears a bikini if the game is completed fast enough.
  • The Annoying Dog saying "Don't you have anything better to do?" during the end of Hard Mode is a line occasionally said by Flowey as well as his true form Asriel. It is also the name of a PlayStation Trophy in the PlayStation release of Undertale.
  • The Annoying Dog might be a reference to Ruffini the dog from EarthBound, as both Annoying Dog and Ruffini are dogs based on the game designers.
  • The Annoying Dog makes a cameo in the music video for "The Greatest Living Show," as it is a collaboration project between Toby Fox and Itoki Hana animated by Bani-Chan. In the end credits, a top hat-wearing and heavily stylized Annoying Dog jumps around a trash can (who in it can be seen an illustrated Bani-Chan) and a flower (most likely representing Itoki Hana) and then falls over, smiling and wagging its tail.
  • On the Undertale Alarm Clock App, the Annoying Dog opens its mouth when you hover your cursor over it, but does not have any actual dialogue.

Misconceptions

Annoying Dog is not Toby Fox

This comes from a statement from a later livestream where the Annoying Dog is merely an avatar of Toby Fox, however things like the official kickstarter and Undertale 10th anniversary stream have Toby act as The Annoying Dog[43].

Codex Statistics Questions

Q: Shouldn't the annoying dog get a resistance to things it preadtes if it created Undertale?
A: The Annoying Dog created Undertale through coding the game, being more of a meta-fictional joke then anything. It's actual presence throughout the game is mainly a comedic relief that doesn't do much.
