As a child, Eva took great pride in being a member of the Ushiromiya family and deeply admired Kinzo for restoring the family's status through what she saw as his legendary efforts. She dedicated herself to becoming a person of capability, accreditation, and status—someone worthy of the Ushiromiya name, valuable to Kinzo, and eventually the successor to the headship. She developed a rivalry with her older brother Krauss, the natural heir by birthright, and often outperformed him academically. However, Kinzo never acknowledged her efforts, believing a woman's role was limited to domestic matters and supporting her husband. In his view, Eva's only purpose in the family was to marry someone profitable to him. Krauss often echoed this attitude, taunting her about their respective roles as man and woman. Though the discrimination she faced from Kinzo and Krauss drove her to push herself harder, Eva eventually accepted that Kinzo would never see a woman as a potential successor. She decided to focus on finding a man who could rival Krauss to take as her husband. When she entered her arranged marriage with Hideyoshi, Eva noticed that Krauss's wife Natsuhi had failed to give Kinzo a child. She took advantage of Kinzo's dissatisfaction with Natsuhi to convince him to allow Hideyoshi to adopt the Ushiromiya name rather than have her lose it. To her delight, she bore a son, George, while Natsuhi's next child was a daughter, Jessica. Eva placed her dream on George's shoulders, dedicating herself to raising him as a worthy successor. By the time of the 1986 family conference, Eva was the wife of a businessman and assisted her husband in managing his successful fast-food chain. However, following a hostile buyout of the company's stock when it went public, she and Hideyoshi found themselves in financial trouble, needing a large sum to reach a settlement that would preserve their control. They entered the conference intending to extort money from Krauss. Eva also strongly disapproved of George's relationship with the servant Shannon, believing her an unsuitable wife for the next head due to her status, and wanted to pressure him into an arranged marriage of her choosing. At the end of Banquet of the Golden Witch, it is revealed that Eva was the sole survivor of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders. As a result, she inherited the entire Ushiromiya fortune and gained custody of Ange, Rudolf's daughter, who had been absent that day. Though police investigations found no evidence linking her to the crime, she faced intense media scrutiny and was viewed by the public as the culprit. The pressure mounted as she made enemies in the business world by employing the same aggressive and underhanded tactics that had once been used against Hideyoshi's company. Her relationship with Ange also grew increasingly strained, and she died in 1998 unable to trust anyone and despised by many. Legend of the Golden Witch At dawn on the second day, Eva tries to taunt Natsuhi about whether Kinzo will come down for breakfast. She meets Natsuhi as she leaves Kinzo's study but is unexpectedly rebuffed with confidence. Back in the parlor, Kanon informs Eva of a strange occult symbol painted on the rose garden storehouse. She heads there with Hideyoshi, Kanon, and Genji and discovers the first twilight victims inside. When the others arrive, George asks about a ring on Shannon's finger. Realizing George had proposed to the servant, Eva responds with indignation, but Hideyoshi silences her objections. Upon returning to the mansion, Eva and Natsuhi go to inform Kinzo but find his study empty. She later discusses the first twilight murders with Battler and suggests they may have been the result of a servant conspiracy, possibly with a mastermind. Battler rejects her theory and points out that she herself is suspicious, but Eva argues she would gain little from displaying the murders so theatrically. Some time later, Eva raises the question of Kinzo's disappearance and accuses Natsuhi of killing him and hiding the body. She reveals that she had placed a folded receipt in the crack of the study door after meeting Natsuhi that morning and found it still lodged in the same position upon returning after the discovery of the victims. According to her, this proved Kinzo could not have left the room between the time Natsuhi claimed to meet him and the later discovery of the empty study, suggesting Natsuhi had lied. The argument escalates until Natsuhi points a gun at her, but Eva shows no fear and dares her to shoot. Battler then proposes an alternative explanation for Kinzo's disappearance and berates Eva for making accusations when her own alibi for the first twilight was uncertain, bringing the argument to an end. Eva and Hideyoshi decide to retire to a guest room alone. George declines her offer to join them. In the guest room, Eva reflects on her life and expresses regret for using Hideyoshi and George as a way of getting back at Krauss for his arrogant attitude regarding the headship. Hideyoshi comforts her, telling her he regrets nothing about his life with her, and they discuss plans for a vacation in the Maldives. Eva and Hideyoshi are later found dead in the room by Kanon and Kumasawa, becoming the second twilight victims. The room was sealed with a chain lock at the time of discovery. Turn of the Golden Witch During the 1986 family conference, Eva made a snide remark toward Rosa about Maria's apparent immaturity. Though initially skeptical of Beatrice's identity after Kyrie's sighting, she eventually acknowledged her as a witch alongside the other adults in the chapel on the evening of the first day. The next morning, Eva's corpse was discovered in the chapel with the other first twilight victims. Banquet of the Golden Witch Since the first twilight spared the family this time, Eva discusses theories with the other adults as they barricade themselves in the guesthouse. Though they fail to solve the epitaph together, Eva figures it out with help from her younger self and an offhand hint from Rosa. After checking a book in the guesthouse library, she exits and finds an underground tunnel leading to a room filled with the legendary ten tons of gold. Eva is ecstatic, believing her problems are solved. On her way out, she encounters Rosa, who had also solved the epitaph. After a tense confrontation, they agree to split the gold. They disagree on whether to announce the discovery, and Rosa compromises, allowing Eva one night to analyze the situation before revealing it. Separately, Beatrice meets Eva's younger self and passes down the titles of Golden Witch and Endless Witch as a reward for solving the epitaph. Young Eva also inherits the name Beatrice, becoming EVA Beatrice. Back in the guesthouse, Eva develops a fever and confines herself to her room with Hideyoshi, suffering from severe headaches and visions of EVA Beatrice as the witch's murders continue. Through her connection to EVA Beatrice, she knows the dangers the second through sixth twilight victims face but only becomes aware in time for the others to discover the bodies. EVA Beatrice promises to spare Hideyoshi but breaks that promise due to his interference. Eva is devastated, as the two of them place different value on her childhood dream and her family. She wonders if the dark desires in her heart caused their deaths. While she leaves the parlor to make coffee, Krauss and Natsuhi are killed by the Chiesters. Finding George, Krauss, and Natsuhi missing, Eva and the remaining survivors search for them. They find Krauss and Natsuhi's bodies in the rose garden arbor and George's corpse in the locked mansion parlor. Eva and Jessica argue, each blaming the other for their loved ones' deaths. Eva accidentally fires a rifle round near Jessica's face, temporarily blinding her. While Nanjo treats Jessica, Eva runs into the corridor, with Battler pursuing her. Battler confronts EVA Beatrice in Purgatorio, asserting that she is a cover for the human culprit, Eva. He faces little resistance for the second through eighth twilights but cannot argue guilt for Nanjo's murder. After Beatrice denies witches in red to save Battler, the gameboard Battler faces Eva, who admits to being the culprit and shoots him with her rifle. In the Golden Land, Eva and Natsuhi hug, sympathizing over their children's romantic interest in the servants. With the end roll revealing Eva as the sole survivor of the third game, the ??? explores a future twelve years after the incident. As the only survivor, Eva inherited the entire Ushiromiya Group and custody of her absent niece, Ange. Though police found no evidence of a crime or link to her, the public rejected this and fueled a conspiracy theory naming her the culprit. Under immense pressure and unable to trust anyone, Eva gradually became the person the public expected her to be, and her relationship with Ange grew strained. She eventually fell victim to a terminal illness and died in 1998 as a bitter, distrustful woman. Her final act was to call Ange to her bedside and declare that she would curse her to the same fate by passing down all her wealth and the headship. Alliance of the Golden Witch Eva is already dead at the beginning of Ange's 1998 scenario, though she remains a prominent target of Ange's resentment. Okonogi challenges Ange's view of her, suggesting that Eva may have survived the Rokkenjima Mass Murders because Kinzo revealed the answer to the epitaph and led her to Kuwadorian, intending to make her his successor. He also personally doubts that Eva could have murdered her immediate family—Hideyoshi and George. After Ange confronts Kasumi and her henchmen, using magic to summon the Seven Stakes to kill them, EVA Beatrice transforms into Eva to finish Ange off. Eva uses black magic to prevent Ange from summoning the Seven Stakes. However, as she pulls the trigger, the gun explodes in her face due to Mammon's intervention. Incapacitated and writhing in pain, she is given a mercy kill by Mammon and Ange. End of the Golden Witch The next morning, Eva finds George's body in the cousin room with his throat slit and is overcome with grief. She vows to avenge his murder. When the survivors enter Kinzo's study, Eva directly accuses Natsuhi of covering up Kinzo's death to hide Krauss's embezzlement. She reveals that she sealed the study with the same folded receipt seal she used in Legend of the Golden Witch after seeing Natsuhi leave the study at 11:00 PM the previous night. Hideyoshi is later stabbed by an unknown assailant in a guest room, and Eva finds the room locked moments after the attack. She rushes to bring the others and a pair of wire cutters to cut the chain, but arrives too late to save her husband. During the trial conducted by the Great Court of Illusions, Eva reveals that she and Erika had brainstormed the issue of seals together, devising a seal using perforated packing tape and a repeated signature along the seal's borders. She had sealed the servant room Genji was in at 1:00 AM on the second day, and the seal remained unbroken until his body was discovered the next morning. After Erika successfully proves Natsuhi's guilt by the court's standards, the scene shifts to the parlor, where a distraught Eva confronts Natsuhi about the murders. Eva is still alive at the time of the game's suspension. Dawn of the Golden Witch It is later revealed that Eva had faked her death as part of a prank on the haughty detective guest. Erika, however, was dissatisfied with an ambiguous investigation and ensured Eva's death by severing her head herself. The corpse was found in the VIP room with its neck completely severed by a blade—an unmistakable and perfectly recognizable body. Requiem of the Golden Witch In the Tea Party, the true events of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders are revealed. Eva and the adults solve the epitaph together, with Eva making the key discovery involving the Danshui Railway Line and the relevant kanji radicals in its station names. As the adults enter the gold room, they encounter Beatrice, who explains her plan and the bomb mechanism on the grandfather clock. Eva is suspicious of the witch's words and suggests she may be lying about which side of the switch activates the bomb. The adults scuffle over this, but midnight passes with the bomb undetonated, proving the witch's words true. The adults continue arguing over how to divide the gold, and Eva accidentally shoots Natsuhi through the eye during the struggle, killing her. Krauss is then killed by Hideyoshi during a struggle over one of the guns. Eva and Hideyoshi insist it was an accident, but the others do not readily accept that explanation. Desperate to cover up the deaths, Eva proposes using the bomb to destroy all evidence. Rosa rejects the idea, pointing out it would destroy the gold as well, and suggests Eva turn herself in—a solution Eva furiously refuses. The two struggle, but Kyrie resolves it by shooting Rosa. Too late, Eva realizes Kyrie intends to kill them all and is shot herself. Eva wakes some time later and realizes the bullet only grazed her; she had fainted from shock. She cries over Hideyoshi's death but soon realizes George and the others are in danger. Eva confronts Rudolf in front of the chapel and shoots him dead, having seen through his lies and attempts to distract her. She then confronts Kyrie in the rose garden. Kyrie tells Eva that with Rudolf dead, Ange is of no value to her. Shocked by these words, Eva kills her and vows to bury the truth of the incident and the true nature of Ange's parents in the cat box. After the confrontation, she escapes alone to Kuwadorian, survives the explosion, and eventually returns to the mainland. Twilight of the Golden Witch In Bernkastel's game, Eva's corpse is found in the dining hall as one of the first twilight victims. When Ange returns to the party after speaking with Featherine and mentions Eva's diary, Eva frantically insists that the words in the diary do not reflect the truth of the incident. Ange does not believe her. Eva has a minimal role in the scenes that follow. In the manga adaptation, Tohya reveals that Eva visited him after the publication of Banquet of the Golden Witch and several other stories. She explained the events in the VIP gold room, clearing up his confusion, and left him her personal diary and its key. |

The One-Winged Eagle staff, which she holds everywhere she goes.
Eye Color Variations: - Golden Fantasia: Light blue eyes - Anime adaptation: Pink eyes, the same as Eva
Personality
- Hard-Working and Confident: Eva is a hard-working woman trying to hold her own in a male-dominated society. She projects confidence and self-assurance, though this can quickly change if she loses the upper hand in a discussion.
- Cunning and Opportunistic: Eva is quite cunning and pounces on opportunities, a trait that helped her retain the Ushiromiya name after marriage by exploiting Kinzo's dissatisfaction toward Natsuhi.
- Proud of the Ushiromiya Name: Eva has great pride in the Ushiromiya family name and history. She believes herself to be the ideal successor over her elder brother Krauss, whom she views as inferior and an unjust heir. She channeled her efforts into raising George to be an ideal successor, controlling his life with supplemental lessons and limiting his romantic involvements.
- Elitist: Eva's pride led to an elitist attitude, looking down on Shannon's servant status and Maria's immaturity.
- Sharp-Tongued and Sardonic: Eva's easygoing attitude belies a sharp tongue and sardonic manner. She rarely resorts to open verbal abuse as an adult but enjoys subtly demeaning or undermining those she dislikes or looks down upon. She does not hesitate to level gender roles against other women such as Natsuhi and Jessica, particularly to elevate George over them. She criticizes Natsuhi for pressuring Jessica to become successor despite doing the same with George.
- Contentious with Female Residents: Eva has a contentious relationship with most of the island's female residents, including a one-sided rivalry with Natsuhi, Jessica, and Shannon. She did not get along with her younger sister Rosa, having verbally bullied and psychologically abused her as a child. Exceptions include Kyrie and Ange.
- Overestimates Her Intelligence: Eva is a woman of considerable talents and a quick mind, having solved the epitaph largely by herself and found the gold in the third game. However, she often overestimates her intelligence and underestimates those around her, especially her siblings.
- Sensitive and Vulnerable in Private: Eva publicly projects confidence and strength but has moments of sensitivity and vulnerability she expresses only in private with Hideyoshi. She can be reflective and question her motivations. She sincerely cares about Hideyoshi and George and becomes frantic if either is in danger.
- Interests: Eva expresses interest in travelling and enjoys martial arts, the latter disapproved of by Kinzo and Krauss for being traditionally masculine.
- Controlling and Paranoid After Rokkenjima: After being the only survivor of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders, Eva faced public scrutiny. She tried to develop a loving relationship with Ange but foisted her dream for George onto her, becoming more controlling and hostile. Her enemies in business grew, leading her to become increasingly paranoid and unable to trust anyone.
- Spoiled, Capricious, Envious, Greedy, and Selfish: As the physical manifestation of Eva's childhood, young EVA appears as a spoiled, capricious, envious, greedy, and selfish brat who is careless of others' needs and desires.
- Sadistic and Cruel: After becoming the successor of Beatrice, EVA-Beatrice is sadistic and cruel, enjoying torturing victims by resurrecting and killing them again. She creates bizarre and brutal deaths, taking great joy in repeatedly torturing Rosa in different ways.
- Egocentric, Narcissistic, and Arrogant: EVA-Beatrice is egocentric, narcissistic, and arrogant. She loves to mock others, repeatedly taunting them by saying, "Heso demo kande shinjaebā?" (Why don't you bite your navel and die?).
- Believes She Deserves Rewards: EVA-Beatrice believes she deserves effective Furniture, the titles of Endless and Golden Witch, and the gold and headship of the Ushiromiya family.
- Childish: Since she is the image of an Eva who never went past her childhood, EVA-Beatrice is childish. She has a complex about being called "oba-san" by Battler and prefers to be called "nee-san."
- Stand-In for Eva: EVA-Beatrice begins to act as a stand-in for Eva and shares many of her thoughts and feelings, such as when George views EVA-Beatrice as his mother's true nature in Dawn of the Golden Witch.
Goals
- Become the next head of the Ushiromiya Family (Technically succeeded as a side effect of the Rokkenjima murders).
- Have George succeed as the head of the Ushiromiya (Failed, Abandoned in the Golden Land).
Relationships
Hideyoshi Ushiromiya
Hideyoshi and Eva share a happy marriage, with no significant issues apparent in their relationship. The two met through an arranged marriage, and Hideyoshi—having no close relatives of his own—gladly took on the Ushiromiya family name.
Eva supports her husband's business ventures, while Hideyoshi's easygoing and pleasant disposition compensates for her interpersonal shortcomings. He frequently intervenes during Eva's verbal attacks on others, restraining her and defusing tension. As an outsider to the Ushiromiya family, he lacks Eva's elitism and serves as a more supportive counterbalance for George against her control—though he does not push back against her helicopter parenting as much as he perhaps should. Hideyoshi is a vital source of emotional support for Eva and is effectively the only person around whom she willingly allows herself to be vulnerable.
George Ushiromiya
George is Eva's only son and, aside from Hideyoshi, the only person she deeply cares for. Following Kinzo's rejection of her ambitions for the headship, Eva resolved to raise George as the next successor of the Ushiromiya family, effectively projecting her own dream onto him. She gave him a strict and intense upbringing, sparing no expense on private tutoring, arts classes, and martial arts training. Her overbearing control left George with little free time for leisure or personal development. Even by 1986, when George was already an adult, she continued attempting to control his life—disapproving of his relationship with the servant Shannon and pressuring him into an arranged marriage with a reputable woman of her choosing, Ayumi.
Though George does not show it publicly, he harbors deep frustration over his mother's micromanagement and wishes to break free and become his own person. The two confront each other in Dawn of the Golden Witch, clashing over both his relationship with Shannon and Eva's control over his life. Despite their conflicts, George and Eva do love each other as family, and each is overcome with grief whenever the other is killed. In Legend of the Golden Witch and Banquet of the Golden Witch, Eva expresses regret over her treatment of George, realizing her overbearing control was unjust and may have stemmed from a desire to get back at Krauss.
Kinzo Ushiromiya
Eva deeply respects and idolizes her father Kinzo for his legendary turnaround of the Ushiromiya family fortune. This admiration drove her to follow in his footsteps, developing herself academically and personally with the goal of becoming the next successor. Kinzo, however, did not approve of her efforts, believing a woman's role should be limited to supporting her husband and benefiting the family through marriage—and that she ought to dedicate herself to domestic skills instead.
Krauss Ushiromiya
Eva and her brother Krauss shared an intense sibling rivalry throughout childhood. Eva consistently outperformed Krauss in school and accomplishments and believed herself the more suitable successor. Krauss, however, echoed Kinzo's gender-essentialist views, reiterating that her ambitions were conceited for a woman and that the role of successor should naturally fall to him as the firstborn son. Eva despised Krauss for his attitude and the injustice of her situation, pushing herself to outdo him at every turn. While their rivalry is less overt in adulthood, she views him as incompetent and continues to make verbal jabs at him over matters as minor as the family dinner.
Rosa Ushiromiya
Eva often bullied Rosa from infancy, primarily through verbal means—lying to her and tricking her into trouble with their brothers and parents.[1] She holds no love or respect for her younger sister, viewing her as incapable, stupid, and even worthy of contempt. This attitude persists into adulthood, openly displayed when she calls Rosa a "brainless idiot" in Chapter 2 of Banquet of the Golden Witch. She also makes more covert attacks by pressuring Rosa during the family conference and bringing up Maria's immaturity, condemning her as an unfit parent by extension. In Banquet of the Golden Witch, Eva claims Rosa is the sibling she trusts most—though given the circumstances, this trust likely stems from viewing Rosa as less crafty than her brothers.
Natsuhi Ushiromiya
Eva holds a poor opinion of Natsuhi and frequently targets her with verbal attacks. She particularly dislikes it when Natsuhi asserts her authority or attempts to command a situation, viewing such actions as shameless and a challenge to Eva's superior family rank.[2] Her attacks range from open confrontation to sly, subtle remarks meant to embarrass or undermine. Despite having been a victim of gender discrimination in her childhood, Eva does not hesitate to use those same remarks against Natsuhi, reminding her that she merely married into the family and should not dare to challenge her.
Jessica Ushiromiya
Eva views Jessica as a rival for George's claim to the future headship of the Ushiromiya family. She takes great delight in the fact that Jessica is both a woman—and thus less eligible by the family's patriarchal standards—and less studious and well-mannered than her son. Eva sometimes raises these points to Natsuhi in an attempt to elevate George and undermine Jessica. In Turn of the Golden Witch, Eva showed solidarity with Jessica in the face of Krauss's criticism of her unladylike mannerisms and pointed out her learning of makeup to Natsuhi. While this pleased Jessica, it also embarrassed Natsuhi and Krauss—which may have been Eva's true goal.
Shannon
Eva is aware of the romantic interest between Shannon and George and strongly disapproves, primarily because Shannon's status as a servant would complicate George's path to becoming the future family head as Eva intends. It is unknown whether she knows they are dating, but she attempted to preempt the possibility by highlighting George's marriage meeting to Shannon and warning her that she is far less suitable in status and capability than Eva's chosen candidate. She also sometimes picks on Shannon to undermine Natsuhi's position as host for the family conference, suggesting she had improperly prepared her servants.
EVA-Beatrice
Eva's internal conflicts are explored in Banquet of the Golden Witch, where she interacts with a younger version of herself. This young Eva appears by her side during times of struggle, offering support and cursing her adversaries on her behalf. She holds onto Eva's childhood dream of succeeding the headship and getting back at Krauss, pushing Eva to solve the epitaph and become the family head. While Eva still values her childhood goals, she has also developed a love for her husband and son—one her younger self does not share. This conflict escalates when Eva finds the gold and her younger self gains witch powers and the title of EVA-Beatrice. The two sharply disagree on whether they value the gold and headship or her family more, while EVA-Beatrice carries out the murders of the epitaph.
Ange Ushiromiya
As the sole survivor of the Rokkenjima Mass Murders, Eva gained custody of her niece Ange, who had been absent on the day of the 1986 family conference. Eva attempted to accept Ange as her new daughter, but her intentions were clouded by grief over the loss of her son George. She tried to raise Ange as George's successor, but Ange was unreceptive to her strict upbringing and unwilling to accept her as a replacement mother. The situation was further strained by Eva's constant comparisons of Ange to her deceased son.
As a result of Ange's rejection and the mounting public pressure on Eva, their relationship grew increasingly bitter and resentful. By the time of Eva's death, their bond had deteriorated beyond repair. Eva's categorical refusal to tell Ange the truth about her family's death only deepened Ange's fury. Eva died cursing Ange, yet her final act was to bequeath her the entirety of the Ushiromiya fortune and name—an attempt to lead Ange toward the same tragic fate she herself had endured.
In the final two arcs, it is revealed that Eva had concealed the truth to hide the fact that Ange's parents were responsible for the massacre. The side story The Witches' Tanabata also reveals that Bernkastel played a role in Ange's rejection of Eva, having made her promise never to accept Eva as her new mother in exchange for the illusory hope that her parents might one day return.
Tetsurou Okonogi
Okonogi was the president of a foodstuffs distribution company with close ties to Hideyoshi's business. As such, he was among those Eva trusted, and she appointed him to a high position in the Ushiromiya Group following her inheritance of the family fortune. He appears to trust Eva in return, having made the case against her being the culprit of the mass murder incident in a discussion with Ange.

Even if a witch is killed in the human domain they still exist within the Meta World)

Granted the title of Beatrice along with all of her abilities and servants[23], giving her:
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics
- Fighter's Intuition (Fighters can throw out short ranged quick attacks[25] average-ranged, average damage dealing attacks[25], or jigh-ranged, high damage dealing attacks, however these attacks come out slow[25]. Fighters can do typical throw attacks that can be countered if the opponent uses inputs throw at the same time[25])
- Partner Swap (The fighters can switch in with their partner fighter during battle[25])

- Superhuman Physical Characteristics
- Intimidation (A witch's portrait and stories can unnerve one enough to send a chill down their spine[38])

- Personal Nonexistence
- Mathematical Nonexistence:
- Logic Manipulation
- Mathematical
- Transformation
- Extra-Planar Existence (Witches naturally exist in higher planes where they can view the "game world" from[7]. Witches are cast adrift from the physical human plane and walk between fragments[8]. The accepted theory of a witch is that one becomes one the moment they gain possession of a power surpassing the boundaries of Humans that they can use as will[9]. In the world of Umineko it is noted that there's the Chessboard, the Meta Room, and the witches world which each of the different worlds being hierarchically piled up and the witches critiquing the lower world[50])
- Personal Domain (Witches create a world or Fragment in which they can use their powers freely known as a "territory"[9])
- Avatar Creation (Witches can make themselves pieces in the game world as they view themself from the higher-plane[7]. The pieces can also still operate even if their higher plane self is effectively loses all will[7]. It's noted that choosing a piece is the equivalent of a character select screen of a video game and one's consciousness from the higher plane can be sucked away when throwing their piece in[51])
- Incorporeality (Witches initially manifest as shadowy figures that cannot be seen or felt asides from the occasional odd sixth sense[38])
- Invisibility (It's noted that witches like Beatrice have mysterious happenings happen around the mansion with no one ever seeing anyone[42], down to claims of seeing floating lights and shining butterflies along with eerie footsteps echoing through the halls[42]. Witches are completely invisible to those who either do not believe or they do not wish to show themselves too[52])
- Intangibility

- Subjective Reality (Witches can bring objects back into existence with magic through belief[62]. Witches have the power to make whatever they think reality"Umineko When They Cry - Episode 3 - Banquet of the Golden Witch (Visual Novel)">Umineko When They Cry - Episode 3 - Banquet of the Golden Witch (Visual Novel)</ref>)

- Resistance Manipulation (It is revealed in reality that witches set their own weaknesses as they believe being an all-powerful witch with no weaknesses would lead them to boredom[66])
- Plot Manipulation (Witches like Bernkastel and Lambdadelta showcase that they can interfere in a game master's gameboard and tamper with the story[67]. This is even shown in Bernkastel and Lambdadelta's story mode in Umineko: Golden Fantasia where they tamper with Beatrice's game board just by entering it[68]. The witches domain is a world of narrative[19], where a witches true form resides while their human self resides in the human domain[69]).
- Resistance to
- Disease Manipulation (Noted by Maria that witches don't get sick[70])
- Mortality Manipulation & Plot Manipulation (Witches are incapable of being killed through the execute command which changes a character's bio to explain how their story ended[71])

Notable Techniques
Witch Powers
EVA-Beatrice's powers are the same as Beatrice's, able to do just about anything within the limits of her imagination. EVA tends to use her powers in more bizarre ways, such as crushing Rosa and Maria with a giant cake, drowning them in an ocean of colored gelatin, or baking them in a giant magic oven.
Like all witches, she can teleport and freeze time when she appears on the gameboard.
Furniture Summoning
EVA inherited the ability to summon Beatrice's Furniture such as the Seven Sisters of Purgatory, Ronove, and Goats, along with new furniture in the form of the Chiesters, which Beatrice was apparently unable to summon earlier.
Transformation
She can transform herself into her human self at will to ensnare her victims in a false sense of security and let them lower their guard, as well as appear in the place of the real Eva in certain circumstances.
Red Truth Web
EVA can materialize Red Truth in the form of a sticky spider web that she can use to immobilize her victims or lock them in a bubble attached to the stick, so as to beat them senseless.
Automatic Barrier
EVA displays the ability to automatically deploy a magic barrier capable of protecting her from bullets, surprising Ronove who mentions that in comparison, Beatrice must manually create one to protect herself.
Martial Combat
In addition to her magical powers, she maintains the same martial combat skills as Eva, showing it both in her fight against George in Dawn and in Golden Fantasia, where most of her skillset is made up entirely of kicks and strikes with her staff.

EX Specials
Stronger specials that take away one of the fighters stocks[25].
Super
The fighter's super attack that causes two stocks to use[25].
Break Limit
A break limit is a gauge dictating how long fighters can block and guard from attacks before it breaks[25].
Touch
Guard Touch is a method to counter against guard breaks to temporarily stun the enemy[25].
Knockback Guard Touch causes the enemy to knockback from the counter[25].
Damage Touch is a combo breaker that causes the opponent to fly far away[25]. Though damage touch greatly increases the charge recovery time[25].
Assault Touch is an invicible dash attack that has the fighter crash into the opponent[25]. Though it greatly increases the charge recovery time[25]. Assault Touch can go through special attacks[25].
Stunning
Fighters can combo a fighter enough to where they enter a state where they're dizzy[25]. In this state, they cannot do bursts.
Metaworld Gauge
A red gauge appears beneath the timer. Once fully charged, a fighter can activate Meta-World at the cost of one stock, which alters the stage's appearance[27]. While Meta-World is active, the passive abilities of the activating fighter takes effect. The fighter also gains access to their meta attacks for the duration[27], as long as they continue performing the correct button inputs. The opponent can cancel Meta-World by activating it themselves as soon as it is declared[27]. In response, the first fighter may reactivate it again, provided they still have enough stocks[27].
Red Truths
The Red Truth is an absolute truth spoken in red text, introduced by Beatrice during her game with Battler. Everything said in red is the truth, and the speaker is under no obligation to provide further proof confirming what they say. Red truths cannot be used for things where the speaker cannot give an explanation, though they can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided.
It is normally advisable not to use red truths when one already has the advantage. They can be used to insult someone as if it were the truth, and can fix quick mistakes. In Episode 3, Beatrice notes that everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute.
Battler discovers that red truths are a double-edged sword that can cut one down if used carelessly. The red is information that exposes the truth and allows a counterattack if used incorrectly.
The Red Truth is defined as an absolute truth and a tool available to witches. Witches can permit humans to use Red Truths. Red truths cannot be used to force oneself to speak in red when unable, which will cause suffocation. There are no red truths in the Human World.
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing.
Red truths can only be said about actual truth. If a witch's trick contradicts the red truth, it is a lie which breaks the rules.
There are two types of red truths: one that applies to a specific game board and one that is shared across all game boards and can operate outside the cat box.
Blue Truths
Blue Truths were introduced when Beatrice allowed Battler to use them in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, but the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid. For example, "There are five master keys" is not a valid blue truth as it does not deny the witch. Instead, it must be phrased as "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"
Blue truths allege that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter. Witches can use blue truths too, as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent, forcing the opponent to disprove the blue with a red truth.
Blue truths not only refute red truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter.
Golden Truths
Golden Truths were introduced when Battler rose to the level of a Game Master and used one to prove a corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it. Golden truths can only be used by the Game Master. The strength of the truth varies; its power is equal to a red truth, sometimes inferior but other times superior.
Purple Truths
Purple Truths were introduced by Bernkastel during the final game. Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, only the culprit is capable of lying in purple statements.
Other
Standard Tactics
- Chess Board Debates: Characters in Umineko on the chess board largely fight in debates, normally over one's existence (notably witches or supernatural creatures), as a typical fight will not do much to either side if it's two witches or it would be unfair for a human. Game Masters normally need to construct a story in order to do a debate[19] making sure there's no paradoxes or fatal logical fallacies[19] as these all largely matter to make the debate even otherwise the witch would just win.
- Out of Chess Board: When not cosigning to debates, characters instead decide to fight physically being able to utilize different punch and kick combos along with weapons or supernatural powers. Eva Beatrice herself uses various magic attacks along with summoning her servants to fight.
Weaknesses
- Witch Weaknesses: One can make special chants or charms to protect themself and others from witches[42]. These charms protected Natsuhi from the witches attacking her[45]. Maria initially thought Battler was safe from Beatrice due to the charm she gave him[52] with Battler admitting later he actually did have it[87]. It's further explained that these charms are the fifth pentacle of mars, acting as a powerful ward against evil making it difficult for magical beings to get past[88]. A witch cannot fully complete their miracle if one person born with a high resistance to magic doesn't believe in magic fully[39], making their magic slowly stop working overtime[39]. Witches cannot appear before everyone as long as someone with a high resistance to magic denies their existence[89]. If too many gazes turn a witches way with their anti-magic toxins they will cause the witches body to vanish[90]. Spiders and their cobwebs are able to ward off evil[89]. Witches are in constant need of entertainment or else they will literally die of boredom[91]. Beatrice notes most witches grow tired of life after a millennium[70]. Boredom is considered a direct toxin to witches[68]. Eternal boredom is the worst poison of all: that which kills all witches[60]. Holy based magic even if it's not targeted towards a witch can seal and weaken their powers[92]. Items such as the Spirit Mirror showcase their ability to suppress the evil spirits of Akujikishima and by proxy can effect witches and holds evil spirits at bay[93]. Witches cannot completely debunk the argument of the human realm as scientific and magical theories co-exist making it where to fully prove their existence they would need to show it[43], allowing things like Battler to ever deny a magical battle happening because there are no leftover traces or proof of it[43]. Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch's magic[63]. Witches when using summoning or resurrection spells require a vessel, without it, a difficult spell becomes virtually impossible[94]. A denial of a witch's existence is translated as pain for them[73]. Most witch items lose their power if they are not given directly by the witch[95]. Magic is limited by what the user believes they can achieve, it being the reason the seven sisters of purgatory couldn't kill Ange's classmates at St. Lucia's[96]. Witch's cannot commit logic errors within the rules of the game as it would go against red truths causing them to not make magic that's still feasibly a trick under human methods[97]. If they are caught within a logic error their soul is trapped in the sealed room for eternity with them trying to figure out how to get out of it through the logic error[98]. Unless a witch becomes a Voyager Witch, most witches cannot leave their territory at will[9].
- Truth Weaknesses
- Red Truth: Red Truths[28] cannot be used[28] for cases where the explanation cannot be given an explanation with a red truth[28]. They are a double-edge sword that can be used against the user if they use it incorrectly[99]. One cannot use[33] red truths[33] to speak in red for something they do not believe[33]. Red Truths do not exist in the human world as[70] they possess powerful anti-magic toxins. Witches cannot use red truths to lie and can only be said about the actual truth[97].
- Blue Truth: Blue Truths can only be used to deny the opponent's position[31], it cannot be used to make an assertion unless it specifically is worded in a way that denies the opponent's position[31].
- Golden Truth: Golden Truths can only be used by the Game Master[34].
- Purple Statement: Purple Truths hold the same power as red truths, however the culprit can lie in purple statements, making it harder to be able to tell when it is the truth or not[35].
- Sisters of Purgatory Weaknesses: Their seven stakes of purgatory cannot target pure people who have not committed one of the seven deadly sins or people who have a strong resistance to magical power[100].
- Magic Weaknesses: Magic requires risk, every kind of magic carries its own risk and weaknesses[53].
- Unique Weaknesses: Her EVA-Beatrice state is very confident and arrogant. She is also still a new witch so she cannot pull off everything Beatrice can do.
Explanations
Rokkenjima
Rokkenjima is an island in the Izu Archipelago South of Tokyo[101], being a small island no more than six miles across and owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family[101]. The island is plentiful with wildlife (specifically large flocks of seagulls) being left largely untouched by the Ushiromiya family and they only disappear to incite disaster occurring[38]. The island was bought by the head of the Ushiromiya Family after the great Kanto earthquake nearly brought the clan to ruin in 1923[38].
During the events of Episode 3 and onward, Rokkenjima entered a state of being a layered world, where both scientific and magical theories coexist thus neither side can cancel out the others arguments[43].
Ushiromiya Family
A wealthy family that annually goes to Rokkenjima island for family gatherings[101]. There was a time when the great Kanto earthquake brought the Ushiromiya clan to ruin in 1923 but the head of the Ushiromiya family used his considerable talent and astonishingly good luck to revive the family's fortunes, being the one to have bought Rokkenjima where he makes his home[38]. This is done due to his legendary ten tons of gold that he used as the foundation of his fortune[42], which other members of the Ushiromiya family are trying to get through inheritance of finding the location of the gold[3]. According to Kinzou Ushiromiya he got ten tons of gold by making a contract with the witch Beatrice[42].
Those that marry into the Ushiromiya family are not treated the same as those born by blood into it[3], they are never allowed to wear the family's crest even after marrying into it and are treated like a complete outsider due to not sharing the blood[3] being considered by some of the family members "glorified maid-servant"[3] and insulted at the idea of receiving any orders from those that do not share the blood[3].
The family is sat in according to the line of succession which is as follows:[3] Head of the Family, Kinzou Ushiromiya[3] -> Future Head of House, Krauss Ushiromiya (Jessica's Father)[3] -> Second in Line, Eva Ushiromiya (George's Mother)[3] -> Third in Line, Rudolf Ushiromiya (Battler's Father)[3] -> Fourth in Line, Rosa Ushiromiya (Maria's Mother)[3] -> Fifth in Line, Jessica Ushiromiya[3] -> Sixth in Line, George Ushiromiya[3] -> Seventh in Line, Battler Ushiromiya[62] -> Eight in Line, Maria Ushiromiya[3] -> Ninth in Line, Natsuhi Ushiromiya (Jessica's Mother)[3] -> Tenth in Line, Hideoyoshi Ushiromiya (George's Father)[3] -> Eleventh in Line, Kyrie Ushiromiya (Rudolph's Second Wife)[3]
Spirit Attunement
It's explained by the family servant Chiyo Kumasawa that every human being has the ability to sense the presence of ghost, but this affinity gradually fades with age, characters like Maria Ushiromiya being the youngest of the family is able to sense oncoming calamities and disasters[101].
Witch of Rokkenjima
The Witch of Rokkenjima is a legend[38] that was told to the children of the Ushiromiyas about how Beatrice comes on dark, stormy nights wandering out of the forest in search of human sacrifices[3]. With this legend also comes a mystery with Beatrice's epitaph that reads as follows:
If you seek the Golden Land, follow the river and seek the key downstream, you will find a village. In this village, seek the shore of which two will speak. There the key to the Golden Land sleeps.Whoever finds the eky should follow these directions to the Golden Land.
On the first night, offer up as sacrifices the six the key chooses.
On the second night, those who remain will tear apart the two who are close.
On the third night, those who remain will praise my noble name.
On the fourth night, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth night, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth night, gouge the belly and kill.
On the seventh night, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth night, gouge the foot and kill.
On the night night, the witch will revive, and none shall be left alive.
On the tenth night, the journey will end, and you shall reach the capital in which the gold dwells.
The witch will praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold in the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be the ressurection of love lost. One shall be the witch, put into an eternal sleep.
Rest in peace, My beloved witch, Beatrice.
—The Witch's Epitaph Manga
Behold the sweetfish river running through my beloved hometown. You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream in search of the key.
As you travel down it, you will see a village. In that village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.
The one who obtains the key must then travel to the Golden Land in accordance with these rules.
On the first twilight, offer the six chosen by the key as sacrifices. On the second twilight, those who remain shall tear apart the two who are close. On the third twilight, those who remain shall praise my noble name. On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill. On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill. On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill. On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill. On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill. On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive. On the tenth twilight, at journey's end, you shall attain to the power of the Golden Land's treasures, once and for the last time.
The witch shall praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold from the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of all the dead souls. One shall be the resurrection of the love that was lost. One shall be to put the witch to sleep for all time.
Sleep peacefully, my beloved witch, Beatrice.
—The Witch's Epitaph Original English Translation
My beloved hometown, the sweetfish river running through it.You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream and seek the key.
If you follow the river downstream, you will find a village. In the village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.
He who lays hand upon the key shall travel under the rules below.
At the first twilight, you shall lift up as sacrifice the six chosen by the key. At the second twilight, the surviving shall tear apart the two who are close. At the third twilight, the surviving shall praise my honorable name on high. At the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill. At the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill. At the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill. At the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill. At the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill. At the ninth twilight, the Witch shall be revived and none shall be left alive. At the tenth twilight, the journey shall end and you should reach the village of gold.
The Witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures. One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land. One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead. One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love. One shall be, to put the Witch to sleep for all time.
Sleep peacefully, my most beloved witch, Beatrice.

—The Witch's Epitaph Original Japanese Text
Despite it being a legend, Beatrice the witch is real and exists[45].
It is also revealed by Genji that Beatrice was the second lover of Kinzou who perished before the mansion was built and he spent years focusing on his dark arts in order to revive her[102].
Debates
There is a plane that watches the regular plane where one can deal with debating, effectively the same as a chess game[104], effectively being the same as viewing them from a different plane[104] where witches can simply restart over and over the game, the number of times they can play being entirely up to them[104].
Gameboards can have witches effectively get everything they want, making it harder to prove them wrong during a debate[105]. One can tweak facts previously established on the game board to effectively create new rules and truths[28].
Gameboards can have turns stalled if one of the members refuse to continue[43], one can even fall into the reality of the game board[43].
Death is also handled differently in the gameboard where the lost of a piece means they simply bide their time on the side of the chessboard[43]. One's voice cannot reach into the Game Board[106].
Along with this it has no effect on anything in the main world[107].
It is established further in Battler's game board against Eva Beatrice that witches are allowed to[108][109] resurrect the dead for testimony[108] the human side cannot use this move even if there's witches on their side[108]. Along with this, witches can[109] bind one in solid undeniable red truths that they cannot break out of unless they can deny the truth[109]. Though red can also be used to fully deny a witch[109] exposing the answers and destroying all the magic[109].
Witches can also add new pieces into the Gameboard that function as detectives[110].
Each gameboard is its own world with each one's conclusion having an effect on reality[110]. For example, Eva Ushiromiya being the only survivor in one of the gameboards allowed her to live in the real world and escape the island, even when Ange found other bottles that listed the other game worlds endings.
Each gameboard exists as one small game in the endless sea of Fragments[68].
Pawns
Pawns are pieces on the game board set by the people in the Metaworld.
Some pieces have awareness that they're pieces on the game board[70].
The rights a pawn are given within a game allow them to enforce their rights within the gameboard making them able to push others off of them if it gets in the way of their role in the game[111].
The injuries pawns receive in a game board[32] or events they experience within a game board[32] have no effect on those in the metaworld[112]. Battler even makes note that the versions of him and Beatrice on the game board aren't actually them but just pawns under the Game Master's control[90].
Pawns cannot do what it deems impossible, and will execute actions best suited to the original personality[90], Dlanor notes that due to this, if Battler and Beatrice of the game board were in the same position as the pawn they would have done the same thing[90]. Battler makes note that the people within the chessboard aren't a meter metaphor, they really are chessboard pieces[67].
Game Masters
Game Masters are the controllers of the game board. Erika getting the title and power of Game Master was able to construct a new truth on the game board and give it a new title[113].
In these games, they are telling entire stories and controlling it how they see fit with their pawns[47] with these gameboard stories being compared to films such as mysteries and splatter films[47].
The Game Master can establish an illusory court when one believes they have found the culprit[67].
Game Masters can make entire court trials based off the games they made[72].
Game Masters have full control over what is or isn't truth[73]. Through this control, they decide the story of the world and how it will play out[114].
Battler as Game Master was able to full reconstruct an entirely new Beatrice without her old memories[69].
Battler as Game Master learns how difficult in reality game board stories are to construct[19] with Beatrice constantly agonizing over contradictions in her story and a constant battle with logical fallacies[19] as inconsistencies within the story that cause paradoxes can prove fatal to the game and instantly cause it to fall flat on its face and disintegrate[19].
Noted during Ange and Featherine's discussion that the Game Master is allowed to smoothly alter their plot at will[97].
Game Masters can grant the power to one to pull the truth from someone[115], known as "the right to spectate"[115].
Death in the Gameboard
Death in the Game Board occurs in two ways[19] a pawn being removed from the game board, a "death" only in the game and once the game resets the pawn can be returned to life over and over[19], the other being the death of being outside of the game[19] where one loses interest in playing the game anymore, Beatrice gave up her victory during the previous game causing her to die and disappear[19] thus she will never come back to life[19].
It is later revealed that Beatrice as the game master made all of these stories as an attempt to hide the true story in Rokkenjima of the Ushiromiya's all being killed by Rudolf and Kyrie before Eva killed both of them[116].
Truths
Red Truths
| “ | In that case... From now on, when I speak the truth, I will use red. | „ |
| ~ Beatrice introducing the Red Truth |
During the gameboard between Battler and Beatrice, she introduced the concept of red truths, where when she speaks the truth, she will use red[28]. Everything said in red is the truth[28], when speaking the truth one is under no obligation to provide further proof that will confirm the truth of what they say[28]. They cannot[28] be used[28] for things where they cannot give an explanation with a red truth[28]. Red truths can tweak facts if an explanation can be provided[28]. It is normally advisable to not use red truths when one already has the advantage[117]. They can be used even to insult one as if it was the truth[118] along with being used to fix quick mistakes[118]. In Episode 3 when explaining red truths again Beatrice notes everything she speaks in red is absolute and unwavering truth with no room for dispute[60]. Battler finds out the loophole to red truths as they're a double-edge sword that can cut one down if they're not too careful with it, where the red is actually information that exposes the truth and allows one to formulate a counterattack if used incorrectly[99].
The red truth is defined as an absolute truth, a tool available to witches[31]. It is later shown that witches can permit humans to use Red Truths[33].
Red Truths[33] cannot be used[33] to force oneself to speak in red when they cannot which will cause them to suffocate[33].
It is noted by Ronove that there are no red truths in the Human World[70].
The usage of a red truth effectively changes everyone's perception of logic, such as making everyone believe Kinzou could jump out of a third-story window and be perfectly unhurt upon landing[29].
Red Truths can only be said about actual truth[97], if a witch's trick contradicts the red truth then it is a lie which breaks the rules.
Battler later reveals there are two types of red truths, one for red that applies to a specific game board and a red truth that is shared across all game boards and can operate in the world outside of the cat box too[30].
Blue Truths
Beatrice: As of now, Battler, I will allow you to use the blue.Battler: Blue...? Meaning that I can demand that you repeat my words if I say them in "blue"? Beatrice: Not quite. Your requests could be concerning any minute detail. But the blue truth must deny the witch's position, or it is not valid. Battler: ?
Beatrice: For example: "There are five master keys." This is merely a confirmation of the number of keys and does not deny the witch. In order to use the blue, you must change your phrasing. In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room! ...And by doing so, you have now forced the witch to respond.
Blue Truths are something Beatrice allowed Battler to use in Episode 4. They function similarly to red truths, however, the catch is that the blue truth must deny the witch's position or it is not valid[31].
For example, a blue truth cannot be used to claim "There are five master keys." as that does not deny the witch, instead the phrasing must be "In actuality, there are more than five master keys, and the killer used an extra key to access the locked room!"[31].
Blue truths alleges that humanity and clever trickery are the truth of the matter[31].
However, witches can use blue truths too as they exist purely to denote a theory that denies the opponent where the opponent must disporve the blue with a red truth[33].
Blue Truths not only refute Red Truths but make them unable to be used if their theory is too solid for a red truth to counter[32].
Golden Truths
| “ | The Golden Truth... It is the divine truth, derived through different means than the red truth. Its power is equal to the red truth- sometimes inferior, but other times superior!! | „ |
| ~ Dlanor on the Gold Truth |
Golden Truths were first introduced when Battler raised to the level of a game master and used it to prove the corpse could be identified as Kinzou Ushiromiya after a red truth countered it[34]. However, golden truths can only be used by the Game Master[34] along with the strength of the truth varying, its power is equal to a red truth; sometimes inferior but other times superior[34].
Purple Truths
| “ | Purple statements have equivalent power to red truth. However, the culprit alone is capable of lying in purple statements. | „ |
During the final game made by Bernkastel, she introduced a new statement known as "Purple Statements" (otherwise Purple Truths)[35], Battler directly asks what they are with Bernkastel responding that it's a rule devised to make the story easier to understand, purple statements have the same power as red truth, however, only the culprit can lie in purple statements[35].
Souls
One's soul can linger even after they are killed[117].
Kinzou nearly resisted through his soul being erased until a red truth was placed on him[61].
Fate
When something is fated to happen it is hard to change such, if a vase is broken even if a witch uses magic to remember its original state the ultimate fate "the vase was smashed" has not been changed thus it will remember the true state and break[60].
The Endless Witch
The infinite realm that all witches ought to aspire to, the endless witch is free of all worldy suffering, certain to eternal bliss[60]. Life and Death are empty concepts to the Endless Witch[60].
The Endless Witch succession has them pass their most secret arts to a single pupil, once they pass down their arts they retire to further stem their propagation[119].
Normal custom includes that a witch from another sect makes a recommendation before a succession may occur[119].
Lambdadelta recommended EVA and Bernkastel recommended Ange[119].
Initially the name Beatrice was not passed down but it later became customary for the name to be inherited as well with EVA following suit giving ANGE the name of Beatrice[119].
Knox's DecalogueThe ten commandments created by Dlanor A. Knox's father and used in heresy trials.
Knox's 1st: It is forbidden for the culprit to be anyone not mentioned in the early part of the story.
Knox's 2nd: It is forbidden for supernatural agencies to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 3rd: It is forbidden for hidden passages to exist.
Knox's 4th: It is forbidden for unknown drugs or hard-to-understand scientific devices to be used.
Knox's 5th: (not included)
Knox's 6th: It is forbidden for accident or intuition to be employed as a detective technique.
Knox's 7th: It is forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.
Knox's 8th: It is forbidden for the case to be resolved with clues that are not presented.
Knox's 9th: It is permitted for observers to let their own conclusions and interpretations be heard.
Knox's 10th: It is forbidden for a character to disguise themselves as another without any clues.
The debate over the interpretation of these laws continues to this very day, and it has become the source of countless unfair controversies. While fundamentalists call any infringement upon these commandments heresy, revisionists point out that many canonized geniuses have violated these rules.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 5 Tips Knox's Decalogue
Knox's Decalogue were first mentioned by Bernkastel as a way to refute arguments used against Lambdadelta in their game.
Duel Pistol SetA set of demon duel pistols prepared by Zepar and Furfur. The number of shots loaded depends on the format of the duel. In most cases, it holds just a single round.
The emotions of the duelers are loaded into them, and if one of their bullets grazes any part of the body, the concept of the target will be denied without exception.
In the past, duels were performed in the classic style with swords, but this took a great deal of time before an outcome was reached, which displeased certain impatient theatergoing witches.
For this reason, a duel weapon that would always kill with a single shot was asked for and created.
Of course, this weapon is not particularly popular among theatergoing witches who are fans of good-old drawn out, dramatic duels.
—Umineko: When They Cry - Answers Arc Episode 6 Duel Pistol Set
A pistol set created by Zepar and Furfur for duels that were made in order to reconcile impatient theatergoing witches.
Even if one grazes the other with a bullet, the concept of the target wil be denied without exception.
City of Books
"The Honored City of Books Curated By Her Majesty The Witch Of Theater, Drama, and observation", a massive "library" that contains all stories, including[122] where the entire stories in Umineko are merely a single book[122].
Virgilia describes it as a place where the witches who traverse the sea of fragments collect those fragments in text form and store them[123].
The City of Books is sacred territory under the administration of the Senate and there are holy barriers erected around it[123].
Only Witches of the Senate are allowed in the City of Books, though non-members can be given a special invitation that temporarily grants them entrance tot he sacred territory, but the invitations specify arriving on the dot, a second late tot he party's starting time and they automatically lose the effect[123].
Creators
Creators are mentioned multiple times throughout the series, however Lambdadelta defines them more properly, noting they are omniscient all-powerful beings beyond even witches[8].
Canon
Manga
The manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[124].
Anime
There are some beliefs the anime for Umineko is non-canon, however this is not true. In an interview, Ryukishi directly stated he is all for anime and manga adaptations of his works[125], which adds on to a later interview where he noted that he fully overlooks and supervises the anime suggesting one to watch all of the versions of Umineko[126].
Minor Differences
While it is noted that one won't be able to discuss all mysteries by looking at just the anime, Ryukishi not only notes[126], though as explained in the same quote, this is due to the impossiblity of having the mystery written the exact same way across different media, an anime cannot perfectly replicate a visual novel and vice versa, thus the anime is limtied in the amount of clues it can receive as opposed to the visual novel. Ryukishi himself directly notes that things need to be condensed to fit in the manga or anime versions but there's also far more fake leads in the original compared to the manga and anime and he believes one should enter into Umineko from the type of media they are most comfortable with and then look at the different formats to see the information in a new light[127].
Trivia
- The 07th Expansion All Character Settings Collection suggests that Eva and EVA-Beatrice are the same person within the Golden Land, and that Eva occasionally transforms into her witch form to spend time with the other witches.

Misconceptions
Witches lose their powers as soon as one does not believe in them/One can simply debate a witches existence away
Throughout most of Umineko, Battler and Beatrice are debating over her existence, and Beatrice's strength slowly comes back with each game[62] due in part to the hesitation within Battler's heart[62]. Battler even establishes that simply refusing to believe in Beatrice is not enough to beat her and instead will turn him more and more into the defensive until he's simply overpowered and loses[62].
It should be noted too during majority of the first episode, none of the characters left alive believe in Beatrice asides from Maria Ushiromiya, yet she was still able to manifest in the end as she killed everyone[39].
On top of this, simply not believing would not be enough to work; Beatrice makes direct note that Battler has a strong resistance to magic thus her magic cannot reach him[39].
Of extra note, Battler directly has Bernkastel helping him[91], Lambdadelta slightly raising the chances of Battler winning[128], and Beatrice's own teacher explaining to Battler how to counter Beatrice's arguments[43]. Beatrice's teacher mainly being the reason for why Battler was able to argue against Beatrice's points[129]. It was even further noted by Lambdadelta and Bernkastel that Battler couldn't win Beatrice's game even with all of the sloppy loose ends it had and the amount of help he received[23]. Battler himself realizes while Beatrice faces against Bernkastel that she was going easy on him in all their games so that it would be a fair fight between them, constantly giving Battler hints until he got used to the game[73].
Beatrice explains to EVA-Beatrice that contemporary humans like Battler have a fundamental denial of all magic, being made of anti-magic toxins, which can be spread and weaken a witch[63].
It's further noted too that people who've lost their sight also lose all anti-magic power and magical resistance[130].
Even while Battler was battling against Eva-Beatrice, he couldn't truly deny her witch form for good and required Beatrice to use a red truth to kill off all magic there[108][109].
Kinzou further reaffirms that Battler was born with more of his anti-magical blood than anyone else[131].
It's noted by Maria during her status as the Witch of Origins that all humans are born with toxins that block magic[59].
It's noted by Greed that humans are walking blobs of anti-magic though she can manifest as long as a witch like Ange concentrates[59].
Despite all the anti-magic toxins, due to Ange fully believing in magic and her determination being strong she was able to have her familiars interact with the human world to kill all the guards that were after her[132][133].
Eva even tries to argue that there's no way for Ange to call the seven sisters of purgatory due to her anti-magic toxins, yet she still does[133].
Thus simply denying the existence of a witch is not enough to defeat them, as Battler himself with a narrative strong resistance to magic needs a lot of help to truly even counter Beatrice. On top of this, it's specifically noted in-universe that humans built up a strong anti-magic toxin overtime that became strong enough to deny a witch's existence[134], thus this is not a weakness that applies out of universe unless a series has a similar mechanic.
Magic Isn't Real
This comes from the arguments of debates over whether or not it's truly just characters having mental issues as a way to cope with scenarios.
For example, Maria believes she is the daughter of the Holy Ghost as a way to cope with the fact that her mom abused her whenever she asked about her dad.
However, it is proven that the Meta-World is an actual place[103] that witches reside in and there are many scenes throughout the series that can't truly be explained through characters hallucinations.
Such as Ange having her familiars directly interact with the human world and kill all of its people[132][133].
The truth of "magic isn't real"/"magic is real" debate is also answered multiple times in the Umineko franchise.
Using the final talk between Beatrice and Ange, Beatrice does a magic trick and asks Ange if it is magic of a sleight of hand[135] with Ange noting it's a cheap trick but it is also magic as Beatrice has taught her this magic to spread to others to give them happiness. No matter the magic one cannot use it properly and cannot see it without love[135].
It is also repeated multiple times throughout the series how there is no one true truth, it is everyone's point of view as to what their truth is.
Effectively magic is real but also isn't, it is in the situation of a catbox.
It should also be noted that the manga adaptation is directly noted to be an official answer from Ryukishi07 and is essentially the primary canon as it deals with extra info and more concise answers he did not add in the original Visual Novel[124], giving all the answers for the reader to conclude.
Witches can easily die to guns
This statement is noted by Ronove noting that witches are weak to weapons such as guns and require anti-bullet barriers in order to be made[63].
The issue is within the scan itself, within the context of Umineko, bullets specifically contain anti-magical power that cuts right through witches and demons.

- ↑ "6/ There’s some instances where a certain character seems to be criticizing not only the characters, but the readers themselves.
He answered that in the world of Umineko, there’s the Chessboard, then the Meta Room, then the Witches World and it goes up like that. Different worlds are hierarchically piled up. Sometime the critic may be aimed at the characters in the world below, sometimes at the readers, but he’ll leave it at our imagination to guess when." - ↑ [When They Cry] The First and Last Gift "The letter ended there.
After reading that, there was nothing left but to take her up on the challenge. It had been awhile since Lambdadelta had played around with a game board of substance. Since Bernkastel had gone out of her way to pass it along, it was sure to be an entertaining one.
Lambdadelta touched the Fragment.
The moment she did, an array of constellations was suspended in the air, pivoting around the Fragment and forming a miniature galaxy.
"…Oh, now this is nostalgic. So the stage is set in the Japanese countryside. Reminds me of Hinamizawa. …Though, it looks like this place is more desolate than Hinamizawa ever was. …Right then, time to pick my piece. Which one should I choose?"
Lambdadelta held out a hand, and white, black, blue, and red pieces in various shapes and sizes, reminiscent of chess, appeared in the air.
"Which one would be best? …Hmm…"
To participate in a game within a Fragment, you first must send in a piece. In other words, this was much like the character select screen of a video game.
After folding her arms and giving it some deep thought, she eventually settled on a black piece.
She wasn't sure of the situation, but if the point of the game was to survive, she figured her best option would be a sturdy, clever all-rounder with a strong desire to live.
"…In which case, it's gotta be this piece. Let's go, my other self."
She plucked the piece out of midair, then tossed it into the galaxy.
As soon as she did, an infinite number of dazzling lights scattered about, and within a moment, the world was completely buried in a sea of stars.
Within those bright lights, Lambdadelta's consciousness was sucked away…" - ↑ 52.0 52.1 Umineko When They Cry - Episode 1 - Legend of the Golden Witch Chapter 11

- ↑ 124.0 124.1 Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: The character of Sayo Yasuda in Umineko is interesting. What were your thoughts in Sayo's creation? Additionally, what were your thoughts on her expansion in the Umineko manga?
Ryukishi07: The secret of the character of Sayo is the core of Umineko's story, so her inner workings and development were designed carefully and with the utmost complexity.
In the original version, in order to leave room for imagination for the reader to solve the mystery, I chose not to draw Sayo's secrets in great detail (of course, it's still possible to grasp, but I didn't show things in a way where everyone would get it.)
With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a "period" to the "sentence" that is the world of Umineko.
Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko's eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.
Thus, all of the episode of Sayo that appeared in the EP8 manga is the official answer to the world of Umineko.
By no means is the manga version an individual interpretation. It is an official answer from me, Ryukishi07." - ↑ Say It In Red! An Interview with Ryukishi07 "APGNation: There are many of your works that have been adapted into anime or manga. How is it decided as to which works receive adaptations?
Ryukishi07: Basically, we receive an offer from the company, and we accept it.
So far, the availability of anime and manga adaptations of our works is made possible by courteous cooperation with such companies, and for this I am sincerely grateful.
So, for those who are rooting for more anime and manga of our work, I would be happy if you could support the Japanese companies responsible. (laughs)" - ↑ 126.0 126.1 Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""Will people be able to enjoy 'the fun of speculation' in the anime and manga versions too?"
Ryuukishi: Of course. I have been supervising those very carefully. In Higurashi, there were some problems with presentation, and they were allowed to do as they pleased in certain areas. But this time, I have been checking very carefully to make sure there are 'no misconceptions in the presentation' this time, so I think people will be able to significantly enjoy speculation in those as well.
Keiya: In that case, will people who only watch the anime be able to speculate about the series?
Ryuukishi: There is an overwhelming difference in the amount of information contained in an anime and the original work, so it will probably be best to play the original as far as 'the number of hints' is concerned. But as I just said, mysteries in pictures and mysteries in text focus on foreshadowing in very different ways, so things that you didn't notice in the original might feel very out of place in the anime. Then when you return to the original and read the same scene again, you might suddenly feel that something is very suspicious in certain places...... The opposite holds true as well, since some places might not leave an impact when on screen, but the text would lead one to wonder "why is this part being described so thoroughly?" So it might be useful to see it through different mediums." - ↑ Ryukishi07 x KEIYA Special Talk ""If you were to assign a difficulty to the other formats, would you say that they're easier or harder than the original?"
Ryuukishi: I believe that the primary factors that decide the difficulty of a puzzle are the amount of hints and the amount of information. In that sense, you might be able to say that the original will actually be the easiest. As you know, things need to be condensed to fit in manga or anime versions. You can't just copy every line word for word and use the same description, so the amount of information naturally shrinks. Because of this, the original will always be easy as far as the quantity of information is concerned. Although there are also more fake leads in the original (laughs). But I wonder if that makes the difficulty equal between the two. Just like Higurashi, I think you should enter into Umineko from the type of media that you are most comfortable with. Then, when you also look at the different formats and see the information in a new light, you might be able to get close to something." - ↑ Umineko When They Cry - Episode 2 - Turn of the Golden Witch Secret Tea Party -????- (Manga)
