Crono! It’s about time!! You dummy! You wouldn’t believe what we had to go through for you! You mess up again… and we won’t save you! While you were gone we had a terrible time! Marle had to…, and… So then we… and I had to… Hey! You listening, Crono? You can be so irritating sometimes!
~ Lucca to Crono after reviving him

So you finally made it, Serge... When did this sorry tale all begin...? Was it 10 years ago, when you almost drowned here? Or was it 14 years ago, when you were wounded by that panther demon that attacked you... ...resulting in you being carried to Chronopolis where you came into contact with FATE and the Frozen Flame...? Or perhaps it was even 2,400 years in the future, when the Time Crash hurled Chronopolis back to prehistoric times? Or even it could have been 12,000 B.C., when an ancient magical kingdom met its end after trying to use Lavos...? Each is close to being correct... And yet, at the same time, so far from the right answer! The true beginning was during the destruction of the ancient Kingdom of Zeal! As the palace collapsed around her, Princess Schala was sucked into a dimensional vortex along with the Lavos Mammon Machine. Schala and Lavos became unified into one even more powerful entity that would evolve into the Devourer of Time. Filled with the hatred and sadness of Lavos, half of Schala's mind became set on destroying all of existence. Yet at the same time, the other half of her mind desired to save the universe and to be rescued herself. As Schala fell through the time gate in this condition, she heard your crying echoing through time... That is when her story and yours began to intertwine... It is also when the past and the future began to intersect, and when the world became divided into two... Led by the pitiful crying the young Serge made as the panther demon's poison took hold of him... Princess Schala traveled ten thousand years in time to try and make contact with this dimension! This caused a raging magnetic storm that resulted in FATE's system malfunction, which led Serge to the Frozen Flame. Yes, Serge... The sound of your crying touched the heart of Princess Schala... Before the destructive mind-set could become dominant, she cloned herself and sent her copy into this dimension. Schala left her baby daughter-clone with her ancient pendant, possessing magical powers. This was to safeguard her daughter-clone in life-and- death-situations.The pendant would rewind time a little, sending her daughter-clone into a safer point in the immediate past. That's right... Kid is Schala's daughter-clone! ...... Yes, that's right Kid! If that's how you feel... I think Princess Schala would have wanted it to be that way too! And now, about '"Project Kid"'... the time control project Belthasar planned out. The whole project existed to lead you to this one, special point in time! The founding of Chronopolis, the Time Crash, and the

battle between FATE and the Dragon Gods... It was all coordinated so that you would get your hands on the Chrono Cross and come to this place! Of course, Kid was not to know anything about this whole plan until later, when all this will finish. Further in the future, Kid is meant to travel back ten years in time from now to save Serge from drowning. And then, Kid was also meant to call Serge into the other world as he spoke with Leena here on Opassa Beach! You're our last hope... Our final chance... Only you, who came into contact with Schala, and Kid, Schala's clone-daughter, can do it! In the darkness that exists on the other side of time, Schala has been integrated with the Devourer of Time! Please, Serge! Release Princess Schala from the binds of that monster and her own hatred! Show us, the life-forms that exist on this planet, what our new future will be...

~ Lucca to Serge

Sorry for making you sad, Kid... You see, we no longer exist in this time line. But it is a relief to see that you have grown into such a fine looking lady! But of course you're beautiful! After all... you're the Great Lucca's '"little sister!"'
~ Lucca to Kid

Attaboy, Serge! Use the Time Egg to open the gateway to the great unknown... Show us, the life-forms that exist on this planet, what our new future will be...
~ Lucca to Serge

Background

Lucca is a recurring character in the Chrono Series. First introduced in Chrono Trigger, she is a brilliant inventor and Crono's childhood friend. Using her genius intellect and creativity, Lucca invents many devices, such as a battle-training robot named Gato, a short-range teleporter called The Telepod, and a Gate Key which allows for Time Gate manipulation.

She is the second playable character to be named, despite not being physically introduced until later. She joins Crono as a temporary party member during the adventure in 600 AD, and then permanently joins the party during the escape from Guardia's dungeon - making her the first officially recruited party member.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Lucca’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Chrono Trigger

At some point prior to 990 AD, Lucca was born to her parents, Taban and Lara Ashtear. During her childhood, she met and befriended a young boy named Crono. Lucca was raised in an environment where her father's inventions were ever-present. Though always an intelligent girl, initially she expresses frustration with them due to her father sometimes neglecting her for his pursuits. In approximately 990 AD, Lucca would witness her mother endure a horrible accident which left her crippled and unable to walk. This event would spur Lucca to pursue science and inventing - though her exact motivation depends on the timeline and Lara's fate.

In the years between 990 AD and 1000 AD, Lucca would create many inventions alongside her father. The townspeople purport that more often than not, these inventions had a tendency to backfire or go wrong - earning Lucca a reputation as a social pariah, as well as making her a common target for condescension and doubt from the citizens of Truce. Despite this, Lucca continued to create new inventions, always displaying them in the hopes that she would find success.

In the year 1000 AD, Lucca's Telepod is scheduled to be presented on the first day of the Millennial Fair. Her father, Taban, assists her in the demonstration. The crowd expresses doubt about her chances of success and refuses to test it until Crono and his new friend, Marle, arrive. Crono then demonstrates the invention successfully. However, when Marle is inspired to try as well, the device reacts to her pendant, causing Marle to be sent back in time. Crono follows her immediately.

While Crono is searching for Marle in the past, Lucca quickly creates the Gate Key to allow her to follow Crono safely and manipulate Time Gates at her will. During this time, Lucca also realizes Marle is none other than Princess Nadia. Armed with her new invention and this revelation, Lucca encounters Crono in Guardia Palace in 600 AD and explains her findings to him. She is shocked when Crono reveals that Marle has been erased from existence, and Lucca comes to the conclusion that they must rescue the real Queen Leene to ensure her descendants will continue to exist.

Together, Lucca and Crono journey to Manoria Cathedral in search of the queen. After discovering a hairpin bearing the royal crest, the duo is attacked by nuns who reveal themselves to be Mystics in disguise. After defeating them, Lucca expresses her relief before another ambushes her from behind. Lucca is then rescued by a mysterious frog-like creature, who leaps down to slay the beast and then proposes they join forces. Lucca is immediately shocked by his appearance, stating to Crono that she hates frogs. Taking this as a rejection, Frog goes to leave, but Lucca asks him to stay, remarking that he doesn't seem like a bad "person... frog... thing." She asks Crono whether they should accept his offer, and regardless of his answer, Lucca will overcome her fear of frogs to work alongside him. The trio ventures deeper into the Cathedral and successfully rescues the queen. After returning to Guardia Palace, Lucca witnesses Frog express his shame for letting the Queen fall captive. Once he leaves, Lucca tries to stop him and finally confesses that "froggy" wasn't a bad guy, after all, showing her newfound fondness for him.

When Crono is accused of abducting Marle, Lucca rescues him from the Prison Towers in Guardia Castle and single-handedly disarms several royal officials in the process. Despite not being charged for her involvement in the disappearance, Lucca seems to have little regard for becoming an enemy of the state when it comes to her friend.

Fleeing the Present to evade the Chancellor and his guards, Marle urges Lucca to open a Gate that leads thirteen hundred years into the Future. In the Proto Dome, an abandoned robot is discovered by the party. Lucca is immediately fascinated and attempts to repair the robot. She is successful, and thus awakens Robo. He later joins the party in their quest to discover what has become of humanity and is extremely grateful to Lucca for repairing him. In one of the full-motion videos from the PlayStation and Nintendo DS versions, Lucca is trapped by several hostile robots. Robo comes to her aid by bursting through a wall.

Later on, when the party recovers Dreamstone to repair the Masamune, Lucca aids Melchior in fixing the sword. Lucca has the highest priority for fixing the Masamune, and will always assist Melchior as long as she is in the party. The exact reason for this is unknown, though it is implied that Lucca's ancestor was Banta, the blacksmith who forged Leene's Bell. It is also possible that she feels guilty for her initial treatment of Frog and wishes to help him overcome his self-loathing.

Lucca continues to blame herself for the brutal accident which took the legs of her mother, Lara Ashtear, in the year 990 AD. During the course of her time-travels, an opportunity opens for her to revisit that moment and change the events. After saving Fiona's Forest, the party camps out and speaks about their adventures, prompting Marle to ask Lucca if there are any moments in time she would like to go back to. Lucca dodges the question, hesitant to open up about her traumatic experience, and the party eventually goes to sleep. Later, Lucca wakes up in the night to discover the existence of a strange Red Gate. Lucca investigates and realizes that the Red Gate returns her to the year 990 AD, more specifically just before the accident occurred. Lucca relives the events of that day, but this time has the opportunity to find her father's password to the machine and disable it before her mother can be maimed. If the player successfully saves Lara in this sequence, she can be seen walking around the Ashtear residence.

In the ending FMV scene, Lucca goes on to create a mini-robot modeled after Robo. In the same scene, Lucca finds an infant with a pendant that is later revealed to be Chrono Cross protagonist Kid, the clone daughter of Schala. She smiles briefly in recognition of the pendant before picking up the infant and returning home with her.

Lucca appears in several of the alternate endings of the game. In one, she and Marle narrate the credits as they roll by. In another, she seems to harbor intense attraction to Frog's handsome human form.

Radical Dreamers: Nusumenai Hōseki

Lucca opens an orphanage in Regiorra, where she eventually adopts Kid. At some point in her life, she gave the Chrono Trigger to Kid. Lynx kidnaps and murders her while searching for a specimen of the device, luring Kid to his Manor to unite her sample with the Frozen Flame. Strongly attached to Lucca, as Kid seeks vengeance on Lynx but is unable to exact it when soldiers from Porre intervene. As a musician, Serge also wrote a song that Lucca was quite fond of.

Chrono Cross

In Chrono Cross, where she is referred to as Dr. Lucca Ashtear it is discovered that Lucca eventually converted her house into a form of an orphanage. Kid is revealed to have been found by Lucca and raised in the orphanage. Lucca is later kidnapped prior to the beginning of Chrono Cross by Lynx and Harle in an effort to subdue the Prometheus Circuit that keeps the Frozen Flame sealed. She is presumably killed off by Lynx later on. Later on, she appears as an illusion alongside with Crono and Marle as one of the Ghost Children haunting Opassa Beach and Dead Sea. With the others, she chastises Serge for undoing their efforts to thwart the destruction of Lavos, although his bad influence on the timeline which was accidental.

In the game, dactyls function like the Wings of Time (obtained much later) by allowing Lucca to fly around the world and traverse oceans, mountains, and other barriers they could not cross on foot.
  • Epoch: The Epoch can access any of the key time eras in Chrono Trigger. The party initially seeks it after being sealed out of the Antiquity time period by Schala, following the advice of Gaspar. It does not rely on pre-existing Gates to operate. Once aboard the Epoch, Crono can access the Time Gauge. This gauge dominates the console of the Epoch and allows the pilot to select a destination time period Era. The Epoch is theoretically able to travel anywhere in time Era, the areas of note that the party usually travel to with it are Prehistory (65,000,000 BC), the Antiquity (12,000 BC), the Middle Ages (600 AD), the Present (1000 AD), the Apocalypse (1999 AD), the Future (2300 AD), and even the End of Time. At first, it operates the same way that the Gates do, depositing the travelers at the same physical location in different eras in time. This limits its use as a spatial transport. As shown in a cutscene, the Epoch possesses engines that cause it to hover in mid-air. The ship creates a time distortion directly in front of it, and the massive rockets at the rear of the ship propel it into the distortion. This has the effect of propelling the ship and its passengers forward, although they do not move in space at all. When the Epoch arrives at its destination in time, the lift engines shut down, lowering the Epoch to the ground in the same physical location. At a certain point in their adventure, the party loses the Epoch to Dalton. He modifies the ship with technology aboard the Blackbird, giving it the ability to fly. After he is defeated, the party regains use of the now flight-enabled Epoch. Using it, the time travelers can access any era or location in any point in time, which is necessary for certain side quests as well as reaching the Black Omen at any point in history.

Notable Techniques

  • Critical Hit: Lucca shoots a far more powerful blast dealing massive damage to the enemy.
  • Counter-Attack: When equipped with certain accessories Lucca will counter when an enemy attacks her without taking up a turn.

  • Flamethrower: Flamethrower is Lucca's 1st-level Tech and the first Elemental Tech learned in Chrono Trigger. When enemies align themselves or collect into clusters, Flamethrower damages them all. As Lucca raises her hand in the air and then points her gun at the enemy, with a line of fire coming out and hitting the target.
  • Hypnowave: Hypnowave is Lucca's 2nd-level Tech in Chrono Trigger. Hypnowave is her first non-offensive and Status Effect-inflicting tech. With what appears to be a conductor's wand or some other mechanical invention, Lucca faces the screen and taps her feet a few times. Several green rings radiate from her, attempting to put the targets to sleep.
  • Fire: Fire is Lucca's 3rd-level Tech and first magic one in Chrono Trigger. She learns it upon visiting Spekkio. As Lucca spins, a line of fire circles around her. She raises her arms and the fire goes directly to the target, who then combusts with multiple flames shooting off them.
  • Napalm: Napalm is Lucca's 4th-level Tech in Chrono Trigger. As a fire-element, Lucca combines her newly acquired magical prowess with her knowledge of mechanics to forge a bomb. The damage afflicted counts as magical damage. When cast, Lucca throws a grey bomb at the target and an orange dome erupts on impact. Several smaller explosions accompany the blast. While this tech usually hits only one enemy, a cluster of up to three enemies can be affected by Napalm if they are close to the origin-point of the bomb.
  • Protect: Protect is Lucca's 5th-level Tech in Chrono Trigger. This Tech raises an ally's Physical Defense by 1/3. Lucca spins around and raises her arm, with a distinct yellow circle with void lines appearing, contracting and becoming four energy balls that flutter around and disappear. Lucca then holds her hammer with conviction in front of her and the target ally gets protected.
  • Fire II: Fire II is Lucca's level 6th Tech in Chrono Trigger. As Lucca spins, a line of fire circles around her. She raises her hand up as fire explodes everywhere hitting all enemies.

Megaton Bomb is the stronger alternative to Napalm. Lucca adjusts her glasses and proceeds to throw a big, dark-gray bomb at the target, around whom dozens of heavy explosions erupt.
  • Flare: Flare is Lucca's 8th-level Tech and the most potent Fire Tech in Chrono Trigger. When casted, Lucca spins to face the screen and several ovals of red light shuffle across the screen, followed by a series of yellow explosions that cause all targets to turn a molten-white color. Creatures exceptionally weak to flare are Red Scouters, while creatures such as Red Ghaj absorb Flare and convert it into Hit Points.

  • Fire Sword II: Fire Sword II is a Tech used by Crono, and Lucca. It is more powerful than Fire Sword. The same effect as Fire Sword happens except that Crono is empowered by two flames this time instead of one.

  • Antipode Bomb: Antipode Bomb is a Tech used by Marle and Lucca in Chrono Trigger. It can be used after Marle and Lucca meet Spekkio and obtain magical powers, then fight together in the same battle. This tech is the base form of Antipode Bomb II and Antipode Bomb III, its predecessors. Marle freezes the enemy in a large block of ice, and Lucca destroys the ice with an explosion centered on the enemy.
  • Antipode Bomb II: Antipode Bomb II is a dual Tech used by Marle, and Lucca. To perform, Marle must know Ice II and Lucca must know Fire II. Any time after learning Magic from Spekkio at the End of Time, Marle and Lucca can increase their Tech Points and eventually learn this tech. This is the stronger version of Antipode Bomb, and the weaker form of Antipode Bomb III. Marles freezes the enemy in a block of ice, and then Lucca uses her magic to boil the ice from them.
  • Antipode Bomb III: Antipode Bomb III (also known as Antipode 3 in the SNES/PS version) is a Tech used by Marle and Lucca in Chrono Trigger. To perform, Marle must know Ice II and Lucca must know Flare. Any time after learning Magic from Spekkio at the End of Time, Marle and Lucca can increase their Tech Points and eventually learn this tech. This is the stronger version of Antipode Bomb and Antipode Bomb II. The screen turns a deep, crimson-red. Several explosives occur, as the result of Lucca's Flare tech. • Double Bomb: Double Bomb (also known as DoublevBomb in the SNES/PS version) is a dual tech used by Lucca and Robo in Chrono Trigger. This dual tech deals fire damage like most other "explosive" techs. It is learned after Lucca and Robo learn Megaton Bomb and Proximity Bomb respectively. Lucca throws a small bomb at Robo, who then absorbs the energy spins around while adding his own proximity bomb energy to it. Robo then allows for the energy to build up around him, and then releases it in an outwards wave.

  • Flame Kick: Flame Kick is a Double Tech used by Lucca and Ayla in Chrono Trigger. Dealing massive amounts of damage compared to Techs learned earlier in the game and normal physical blows, it is a very powerful Double Tech. When cast, Ayla promptly jumps atop Lucca, who then casts Fire around her. Ayla starts spinning around Lucca and then goes to the enemy, performing a very strong kick. Fire erupts from the point of impact, and the enemy makes a frightened gesture with their face in return.
  • Inferno: Inferno (Tech) (also known as Fire Whirl in the SNES/PS version) is a Double Tech used by Lucca and Ayla in Chrono Trigger. It's an extremely powerful Fire Tech, it deals twice as much damage as Luminaire or Flare on most enemies, along with hitting all enemies. Upon casting, Ayla starts spinning and two tornadoes are created on the battlefield. Lucca then casts fire over Ayla, and then the battlefield turns red and all enemies are hit.
  • Blaze Kick: Blaze Kick is a Double Tech used by Lucca and Ayla in Chrono Trigger. It is the third Double Tech performed by them, and it deals massive damage to a single enemy. Firstly, Lucca casts Fire upon Ayla, who jumps, blazing at the enemy and dealing three consecutive kicks, two of which cause big explosions around the enemy. When the last one strikes, the screen flashes red.

  • Delta Force: Delta Force is a Triple Tech that is used by Crono, Marle and Lucca. It combines Lightning II, Fire II and Ice II to create a strong powerful tech. She then sends a double dose of flames to the boys and ignites their bodies, turning Max Cyclone into a fire-elemental attack as rings of flames emit outward from them. Enemies adjacent to Robo receive a large amount of Fire damage.

  • Delta Storm: Delta Storm is a Triple Tech that is used by Crono, Frog and Lucca in Chrono Trigger. It combines Lightning II, Fire II and Water II to create a strong powerful tech. In the tech, Crono, Lucca and Frog focus their magic power while slowly rising into the air as the screen becomes dark. From the center of the battlefield, a tremendous triangular prism grows and begins rotating, shifting through the elements of Water, Fire and Light respectively before fading away. Afterward, the trio settles to the ground and the enemies receive a large amount of Shadow damage.

One of the three characters that participate in the move must have White Rock equipped, and the characters must already know Allure, Hypnowave, and Tail Spin. As the move begins, the three dance; Lucca spinning, Marle using Allure, and Ayla pounding the air. Then 3 triangles similar to that of the white triangle in Dark Matter appears and they start changing all colors of the spectrum. Meanwhile; Lucca, Marle, and Ayla will appear in random locations with different poses. A Poyozo Doll will appear and move around the screen as well. Other

Standard Tactics: Lucca’s style of fighting is gadgets and magic, with equipment she uses to defend from various physical attacks and magical spells. Lucca is naturally better at fighting with a team given her class so she normally will summon her friends across time to help her in combat and do various team attacks. If the enemy proves very powerful she might use the Epoch to ram it.

Weaknesses: As Lucca’s magic element is fire she is weak to the Water/Ice element. Though this is mitigated by various armors and headgears.

Note: The 50% of damage absorption does not mean they absorb 50% of the damage and take the other 50% of damage, it means that they convert 50% of the damage into health, while the other 50% is neglected.
