Waterwraith

From The Codex
Articles About The Wraiths
Pikmin Series Waterwraith - Plasm Wraith

All that is known about this creature stems from a few sightings deep underground. All reported sightings feature the same core set of details: a giant, viscous form with a clear, hazy sheen not unlike hard candy. One theory holds that it may be the ectoplasmic incarnation of a kind of psychic phenomenon, but as is usually the case with such theories, it is very difficult to prove. All witnesses report being suddenly overcome with fear upon sighting the creature, approaching a state of panic and near insanity. In fact, every report contains an inordinate amount of extremely vague details, which has led to suspicions that exhaustion and fear have caused some simple natural phenomenon to be viewed as a living creature.

Inedible. Known to cause mass hysteria, followed by leg spasms and internal thunderings.
~ Louie's research notes on the Waterwraith

The anxious Waterwraith appears before the final floor of the Submerged Castle, but you won't be able to defeat it until you use Violet Candypop Buds to create purple Pikmin on the cave's lowest level. One touch from a purple will make the beast temporarily vulnerable.

Bomb Rocks show no sign of working against this creature, never mind Pikmin attacks! Does its body not actually exist in this dimension? Maybe if I hit it with a gravitational wave, the dimensions will converge and it will show itself. But is that possible?

Background

The Waterwraith is a boss from Pikmin 2, found in all sublevels of the Submerged Castle and in the Bully Den in Challenge Mode. It can only be damaged by Purple Pikmin; however, the entrance to the cave is flooded, making them impossible to bring along.

Its appearance is generally humanoid in shape, with the suggestion of a head, body, arms, and legs, but without distinct characteristics, and with a watery, transparent body. As a matter of fact, its scientific name is Amphibio sapiens, which is similar to the human's scientific name: Homo sapiens. The Hocotate ship notes that although it can be seen, its sensors somehow detect nothing, leading to the conclusion that the Waterwraith's physical form is anchored in another dimension. It is one of the most dangerous enemies, as it can instantly kill Pikmin by just rolling over them, and cannot be deterred or defeated until the final floor. However, it does not appear immediately, instead giving the player a five minute grace period before appearing. In the Bully Den, both Waterwraiths will fall when the seconds counter falls to 270, leaving only 30 seconds for preparation.

The Waterwraith is one of the few enemies in Pikmin 2 which has its own background music, along with the Titan Dweevil and the Giant Breadbug. In the Submerged Castle, when it appears, its own theme plays. When it is fought in the last sublevel, the normal boss music plays, and when it has no rollers, a special, more lighthearted version of the boss music plays.

Name: Waterwraith

Age: Unknown

Classification: Water-Based entity

Species: Amphibio sapiens

Occupation: None

Status: Unknown (Despite being killed in the Submerged Castle, the Waterwraith appears to be alive and active throughout other dimensions)

Alignment: Unknown (The wildlife on PNF-404 don't follow moral ethics and simply survive like traditional animals in the wilderness. However, in the case of the Waterwraith, it seems to have goals in catching Olimar and Louie across multiple parallel worlds)

Dimensionality: 3-D in the Submerged Castle, Unknown in its original dimension

Attack Potency: At least Below Average Human level+, likely Athlete level (Can easily crush Pikmin, including Purple Pikmin and harm Olimar. Superior to the Red Bulborb which can launch a tire rim several meters into the air)

Durability: At least Below Average Human level+, likely Athlete level (Can take hits from Purple Pikmin and is just as durable as its stone rollers). Immortality and Personal Nonexistence make it extremely difficult to kill.

Striking Strength: At least Below Average Human Class+, likely Athlete Class

Lifting Strength: At least Below Average Human (Can casually lift its stone rollers and is superior to the Red Bulborb which can launch a tire rim several meters into the air)

Travel Speed: Superhuman+ (Can keep up with White Pikmin who can easily outpace pellet shots from the Gatling Groink which can travel at 168 m/s on average)

Combat Speed: Supersonic (Can tag and crush Pikmin along with Olimar himself, and should be comparable to wildlife that use electricity-based attacks)

Reaction Speed: Supersonic (Comparable to the Pikmin themselves and can quickly awaken to fight them while being swarmed)

Stamina: Very High (Can chase Pikmin constantly within the several floors of the Submerged Castle, whilst also traveling between each individual floor)

Range: Below Average Melee physically, Multiversal Cell with Madness Manipulation, Fear Manipulation, and Dimensional Travel

Intelligence: Unknown (Seems to have an innate desire for Olimar and Louie, going as far as to pursuit them in an attempt to kill them)

Powers and Abilities

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Small Size (Type 2; Is only a few times taller than the Pikmin), Eldritch Physiology (The Waterwraith is an unknown entity with no definable existence by scientific research[1]), Enhanced Senses (Is aware of where Olimar and Louie is in the Submerged Castle no matter how far away they are), Dimensional Travel (Can travel between its own dimension and various other ones), Personal Nonexistence (Universal Nonexistence; The Waterwraith's true form is anchored in another dimension, with its water-like form being completely intangible and immune to damage. Is regarded as the nonexistent entity by Olimar[2]), Immortality (Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Due to the Waterwraith's avatar being merely that, any form of harm it succumbs to will not have any baring on the being's true form[1][2]. Reliance on True Form; The Waterwraith's true form is anchored within another dimension, thus as long as that incarnation remains, it can continue to reenter the universe), Possible Regeneration (Possibly Low-Godly; even after supposedly dying to Olimar and Louie in the Submerged Castle, it returned in the Bully den in an entirely alternate dimension), Madness Manipulation and Fear Manipulation (Passive; Eldritch Physiology; The mere sight of the Waterwraith induces instant fear, followed by a state of panic and near insanity[1]), Empathic Manipulation and Biological Manipulation (Potential consumption of the Waterwraith causes mass hysteria, followed by leg spasms and eternal thundering[3]).

Resistance to Extreme Heats and Extreme Colds (Has adapted in all of the underground dungeons and earth's biomes like the Distant Tundra and Tropical Wilds), Time Stop and Magnetism Manipulation (All wildlife on PNF-404 are immune to the magnetic field which stops time in the underground dungeons), Sound Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, and Empathic Manipulation (The Antenna Beetle's whistle-like call technique, similar to the captain's whistle, has no effect on the Wraiths. Olimar's whistle only temporarily stuns a wraith), and Petrification (The purple potion only petrifies its rollers if they aren't destroyed or haven't been damaged, and without its rollers, the Waterwraith can eventually break out of the petrification)

Equipment

  • Stone Rollers: The Waterwraith's stone rollers are its preferred method for combat and traveling. They can crush all enemies roughly comparable in size to it instantly.

Other

Standard Tactics: The Waterwraith will attempt to steamroll its target as swiftly as possible.

Weaknesses: It's main form of attack can only kill things smaller than itself as it doesn't have any offensive attacks other than rolling over Olimar and his pikmin. When its wheels are broken, all it will do is try to run away and swat away at foes. The only mentioned way to kill the Waterwraith thing is to force its physical form into the current dimension.
