Junko (純狐 Junko) is a sagacious spirit whose ability allows her to purify and refine anything she wishes. She bears a deep and lasting hatred toward the Lunarians, and she launched an invasion of the Moon with the sole intention of killing Chang'e, the wife of the man who murdered her son. Junko first appeared as the main antagonist and the Stage 6 boss of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom. She also makes appearances in certain spell card attacks during that game's Extra Stage.

When urban legends were manifesting in Gensokyo,

a rumour started to spread that "Apollo never went to the Moon".

At the same time, a metallic spider appeared around the mountain. The spider appeared to be slowly wandering around.

Reimu: "So, what's this weird machine you mentioned?"

Sanae: "It happened when the morning mist was still covering the mountain."

It had a form with no imperfections, unbecoming of any other beast or monster. Mist faded away and the trees withered in the places where the spider passed by.

Reimu: "So, a machine that looked like a spider?"

Sanae: "I only caught a glimpse of it, but it definitely wasn't just some youkai that I mistook."

Reimu: "Maybe it's one of the kappa's tools..."

Once the machine passed by, there were no signs of life. Tengu flew in the sky overhead, but for some reason, they paid no attention to the spider. As the foothills came into the spider's view, it slowly clambered down the cliffside.

Sanae: "This is definitely interesting. I can't imagine that its appearance is just a coincidence."

Sanae began to grow restless.

Reimu: "What is it? It's kind of irritating."

Sanae: "That thing looked just like Curiosity."

Kaguya: "Seems the time has come for them to arrive."

Eirin: "What shall we do?"

Kaguya: "That's obvious, isn't it? I already prepared myself."

A natural and satisfying answer.

Eirin: "If they're making a move, no human will possibly be able to compete with them.

However, if we were to make any move, we'd fall right into the enemy's hands.

What's more, the youkai of Earth likely can't even interfere to begin with."

Kaguya: "So what do we do?"

Eirin: "I made some medicine for just the occasion. Get Reisen to deliver this to the shrine maiden and her friends."

The seven Occult Balls that had suddenly appeared. Marisa had been investigating just what one of the balls had been; The ball of the Lunar Capital, to be precise.

Marisa: "Looks like this thing was somehow the cause of that while urban legend uproar, but..."

As she sat bewildered, the moon rabbit Reisen appeared there.

—The metallic spider's march of purification cannot be stopped. The trees wither before one's eyes. Not one blade of grass was left in the spider's tracks. When Gensokyo is completely purified, it will be transformed into a perfect world.

早苗 「あれは朝靄の立ちこめる出でした」

霊夢 「蜘蛛みたぃな機械って事?」

早苗 「チラッと見かけただけでしたが、妖怪の見間運いとかではないです」

霊夢 「河童の道具かなぁ」

機械が通った後には、生物の気配がない。 上空を天狗が飛んでいくが、何故か蜘蛛を気にも留めない。 蜘蛛は麓を目視すると、のっそりと崖を下りていった。

早苗 「どうしても気になることがあるのよ。      あの形、偶然とは思ぇない」

そわそわする早苗。

霊夢 「なんなのよ、じれったいなぁ」

早苗 「あれはキュリオシティそっくりだったわ」

輝夜 「来るときが来たわね」

永琳 「どうされますか?」

輝夜 「そんなの決まってるじゃない。      私はもう覚悟したのよ」

永琳 「彼奴が動くと言う事は、人聞達では到底太刀打ち出来ないでしょう。

     しかし、我々が手を出してしまっては相手の思うつぼです。

     ましてや地上の妖怪では干渉すら出来ないでしょう」

永琳 「この為に良い薬を作りました。      これを鈴仙を使って巫女達に届けましょう」

Junko organized the invasion of the Moon specifically to take revenge on Chang'e. She filled the Near Side of the Moon with fairies, introducing life there and forcing the Lunarians to flee, which created the opportunity she needed to strike at Chang'e. Anticipating that the Lunarians would retreat to the Dream World, Junko sent Hecatia to trap them there. However, over the course of half a year, the Lunarians made no move against her. This stagnation caused Junko's plan to stall, and her anger gradually faded, leaving her feeling bored with the situation. It was around this time that the protagonist appeared before her, completely free of impurity, which surprised her. With her anger already diminished, she no longer saw any purpose in continuing the invasion and conceded defeat before the battle even began.

Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine
A fortune slip about Junko was written by Reimu as a way of cleaning up an incident.

Name Meaning

Her name is written as Junko (純狐), using the characters for "pure" and "fox." This meaning fits well with the seven tail like flames that appear behind her and her ability to purify anything. According to her official profile, she does not have a defined identity and does not wish to know exactly what she is.

Mythological Connection

Junko appears to draw inspiration from Xuan Qi, a figure mentioned in the ancient Chinese historical text Zuo Zhuan and the Tianwen poems. She was known for her dark hair and remarkable beauty. Her title, Chun Hu, is written with the same characters as Junko and means "pure fox." Xuan Qi was married to Hou Kui, a leader of the Dongyi tribe, and bore him a son named Bo Feng.

After Hou Yi forced the tyrant Emperor Tai Kang into exile and took control of the Xia Dynasty, he had Bo Feng killed for being a disobedient and greedy official. He then married Xuan Qi because of her beauty. Seeking revenge, Xuan Qi conspired with Hou Yi's minister, Han Zhuo, to assassinate him. She later married Han Zhuo and bore him two sons, Han Jiao and Han Yi.

There is also a more famous figure in Chinese mythology named Hou Yi. In that myth, there were originally ten suns, which normally rose one at a time. One day, however, all ten rose together and threatened to burn the entire world. The archer Hou Yi shot down nine of them to save the Earth. He is also known as the husband of the moon goddess Chang'e, who drank the elixir of immortality and drifted up to the moon.

The relationship between the two Hou Yi figures remains unclear, and the blending of various historical individuals by that name has been discussed in academic studies. The Hou Yi referenced in the Touhou Project appears to combine elements of both figures.

Eirin's explanation in Reisen's Pointdevice and No Miss ending in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom aligns with many of these details, though some information is left out and others differ. For instance, Hou Kui and Han Zhuo are not mentioned, and the diagram Eirin shows implies that Bo Feng was Hou Yi's own son rather than Hou Kui's. This alteration makes the Hou Yi of the Touhou canon a considerably darker and more brutal character.

General Description: Junko is a figure with long blonde or ginger hair and red eyes. Behind her are seven light-purple flame-like tails. She wears a Chinese-style outfit consisting of a red and yellow tabard with a nine-tailed fox pattern and a red sash over a wide-sleeved black dress. A black traditional Chinese crown called a dalachi (大拉翅) is worn on her head.

Facial Features: She has long blonde or ginger hair. Her eyes are red.

  • Calm, Level-Headed, and Crafty: Despite her intense wrath, Junko can be calm and level-headed. She shows willingness to be crafty to complete objectives, adapt to unfavorable situations, and can be reasoned with and forgo plans without much issue.
  • Has Standards: Junko does not want Gensokyo caught in the crossfire and calls the Lunarians' method of taking Gensokyo captive "inhumane."
  • Melodramatic: Junko is melodramatic, comparing her feud with the Lunarians to a "revenge drama." She is boastful when displaying her danmaku, exclaiming lines like "Are you watching Chang'e?" before fighting. During the Hakurei Fireworks Festival, she threatened the audience before revealing she was just acting and putting on a performance.

Hecatia Lapislazuli

Junko and Hecatia share a close friendship. Hecatia sympathized deeply with Junko's circumstances and chose to accompany her in her scheme against the Lunar Capital, offering her own powers to aid in the endeavor. She also provided fairies—including Clownpiece—for Junko to utilize as she saw fit.

Clownpiece

Hecatia loaned Clownpiece to Junko, granting her full authority over the fairy's actions. Clownpiece was subsequently purified into pure lifeforce and given a simple directive: to behave as fairies naturally do and cause mischief near the Lunar Capital, specifically around the Sea of Tranquility.

Chang'e

Junko harbors an intense grudge against Chang'e, as Chang'e's husband was responsible for the death of Junko's son. This personal vendetta motivated Junko to orchestrate a plot against the Lunar Capital and launch an invasion, all with the goal of reaching Chang'e and exacting her revenge.

Hou'yi

Hou'yi was the husband of both Chang'e and Junko—though it is unclear whether these marriages were concurrent or sequential. He was the one who murdered Junko's son, an act that drove Junko to retaliate by taking his life in return.

Whenever they dig up ancient artifacts of unknown purpose,

敵を倒す度に徐々に攻撃力が強くなるが、ミスしたり
スペルカードを使うと元に戻る。
スペルカードを節約する意味が増してヒリヒリする。
これがムカデの毒なのだ。

Momoyo Himemushi's ability to make you stronger if you don't die or bomb.
You gradually get stronger each time you defeat an enemy,[244]
but if you die or use a Spell Card, you'll go back to normal.
You have more reason to be frugal with your Spell Cards, which gives you a tingly feeling.
That's the centipede's toxin at work.

They erase bullets coming directly from either side of you.
Whenever they dig up ancient artifacts of unknown purpose,
humans immediately imagine that they were used for religious purposes.
Even though they actually had a much more practical use.

Notable Techniques


Ability to Purify Anything

Junko's power of purification, not to be confused with the Lunarian and Shinto concept of purity, refers to the refining of substances to remove impurities, such as in the refinement of metals.

She used this power on her own grudge, strengthening it until she became the embodiment of her resentment as a divine spirit, with no need for an identity. She also used it on Clownpiece and other hell fairies, transforming them into beings of pure lifeforce that threatened the Lunar Capital. She claims she can kill the heroines unconditionally if they do not use Eirin's drug and get hit at least once before facing her.

The terms used for Junko's ability, junka or junsui, differ from the Shinto concept of impurity (kegare) and its purification (kiyome). They mean two different things. In fact, Junko refining the hell fairies into pure embodiments of life supercharged their capacity to spread impurity.

According to ZUN, Junko's power of purification is actually an ability to bring things back to their godly nature, before they had names, so it could almost be considered an ability to give birth to gods. The nature of nameless objects and how giving names to gods makes them manifest only one aspect was previously described by Rinnosuke in Curiosities of Lotus Asia.

Explanations

Canoncity of Touhou Project

The Touhou Project franchise canoncity mainly falls under any media worked on by ZUN are official and canon to the overall lineup.

There are various aspects constantly debated about within the canon:

PC-98

Media like PC-98, has been noted by ZUN to be ignored as one can ignore derivative works[302]. He has also said that anything prior to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil can for the most part be ignored and one can think of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as the starting from a clean slate and starting a new series[303], he's also referred to Highly Responsive to Prayers as a study product[304]. With this in mind, one would assume that PC-98 is thus non-canon to the Windows continuity of games.

However, ZUN has also directly stated PC-98 games are the same world as the Windows Games, stating that any contradictions that exist from PC-98 can be ignored from the retcon in Windows Era[305]. While one argues ZUN noting the works are derivative works to be ignored and Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil should be seen as the starting point, these statements are moreso telling a fan to not worry about having to play PC-98 games or learn more about their stories.

It's also been noted in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil's おまけ.txt that the game chronologically is not too far from the previous title, which would be Mystic Square, the PC-98 title[306]. ZUN has also directly brought back characters from PC-98 games, noting he wanted to bring back characters from before Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and notes any of the other older characters that don't appear have probably retired by now and are warmly watching over things from various places nowadays[307]. When asked where Mima from PC-98 has gone, ZUN notes that he doesn't bring them back due to making things complicated and having potentially angry fans ask where she has been the entire time, he has also noted that there's not much use for characters like Genji as Reimu can fly now and also notes he is not dead[308]. ZUN has also made mention to Genji probably living in the lake in the back of the shrine[309]. In Touhou Sangetsusei ~ Strange and Bright Nature Deity, Reimu and Marisa were talking about glowing moss with Reimu saying it would be nice to transfer it to the pond in the back of the Hakurei Shrine and Marisa saying that she could make it grow there on the turtles' back, referencing Genji[310].

In Touhou 07 Perfect Cherry Blossom, when Alice meets Reimu, she tells her long time no see, noting that they've met before calling her "old friend"[311]. In Yuuka's mode in Touhou Project - Phantasmagoria of Flower View, Reimu directly references defeating Yuuka back in PC-98[312]. If Yuuka defeats Marisa in the same game, she will note that Marisa has grown up quite a bit, when the last time she's seen her has been in PC-98[313].

Seeing as ZUN himself has directly said both PC-98 and Windows are in the same world and that characters directly acknowledged PC-98 events and reference characters from it, PC-98 is completely canon and any contradictions PC-98 have can be ignored.

Side Games Time Placements

Touhou 7.5 - Immaterial and Missing Power takes place between Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night[314].

Multiple Playable Routes

In the series, there are multiple playable character routes, including some where the characters fight Reimu herself and defeat her, calling question into what route is canon. ZUN has elaborated that canonically, anytime Reimu and the gang are defeated, they challenge again however many times they want, but on the youkai side, they do not challenge again after being defeated and are not attached to the results of winning or losing[315].

In terms of how playable routes have went, some examples of canonically noted routes:

With some of these examples, it is normally assumed that in some way Reimu has some part in resolving every incident and other routes are dubiously canon depending on what transpired.

Spell Card Rules

There are many cases of weaker humans beating stronger Yokai or vice versa within the Touhou series, this has been elaborated on in Reimu's profile on Perfect Memento in Strict Sense. Reimu introduced the spell card rules as the youkai had no way to defeat the Hakurei shrine maiden, making many youkai feel that their meaning to exist have dissapeared[98]. The rules incoporate the following:

  • Spell cards are techniques specially-named by the individual, and they must be declared upon use.
  • The number of each party's spell cards must be determined in advance of a duel.
  • The first party to have all of their spell cards beaten must admit defeat.
  • The victor is entitled only to what was agreed upon before the duel. If they're not interested in what their opponent has to offer, they can refuse a duel.
  • Winners should generally allow losers a rematch.
  • Always prepare for the unexpected.

The original draft held these rules[319]:

  • Combatants will give names and meanings to the duel for the benefit of beauty.
  • Combatants will declare the number of named duels before beginning.
  • Combatants may not repeat attacks by relying on stamina.
  • Combatants may not deliver attacks that do not have meaning. The meaning itself becomes the attack's power.
  • In the case that a combatant loses a named duel, that combatant will admit defeat, even if he or she has strength remaining. No combatant may kill a human, even upon victory.
  • Combatants will write the duel's name on paper in the format of a contract. By doing so, the above-mentioned rules become absolute. These papers will be called spell cards.

These rules allows for duels that feel almost like sport rather then a match, and have allowed for weaker fighters to challenge stronger ones, due to this though, it also has become possible for youkai to freely defeat Reimu without worrying about the consequences.

Due to them being written into cards and essentially affecting the ability and power of an attack, the spell cards are likely the thing binding attacks to specific properties.

Parallel Worlds

Parallel Worlds is a topic brought up at some points in the Touhou Project franchise, they are worlds called "Probability Worlds" by Yumemi, stating that those and parallel worlds are one and the same[320]. This essentially means that parallel worlds in Touhou are based on the concept of probability. Yumemi and Chiyuri use a "Probability Space Hypervessel" in order to travel to alternate worlds and time periods[321], further showcasing that probabiliy serves an importance.

Magical vs. Physical Strength

There[322] are[323] multiple[324] occasions[325] of[326]characters[327] commenting[328] on[329] humans like[330] Reimu[331] being strong[332]. Despite this Reimu showcases physical strength that isn't superhuman, such as the fact that she cannot cut a bamboo stick while Fujiwara direclty does in front of her.

This is due to the difference between magical and physical strength.

In works like Symposium of Post-mysticism, Yuugi Hoshiguma's profile has Suika directly state that Yuugi is weaker then her in magical powers, but stronger than her physically[333], lining a clear difference between magical and physical strength.

While one can be physically stronger then another, such as how Onis are physically the strongest, magic users are still able to keep up with them due to using a different form of attack.

An example can be found with Yuugi herself, when Reimu fights against her in Subterranean Animism[334], with her acknolwedging her strength[335], something Yuugi only does to those who are truly strong[333]. This establishes even with spellcard rules, Yuugi considers Reimu a strong fighter. Reimu herself is very clearly not at an oni's physical strength, as she cannot do the things they can, however, her magical strength allows her to keep up with them.

To defend against magical based properties requires Non-Standard Defenses as it is acknowledged as not being something of standard physicality.

The Three Layers of Reality

In Chapter 27 of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Reimu proceeds to explain how reality works to Rinnosuke and Marisa, where she explains in-depth the three layers of reality.

This conversation started from discussing the mechanism of fortune, where Rinnosuke attempted to posit that the future is predetermined and that Reimu's luck was her being able to calculate in an instant the predetermined future, however Reimu had a different explanation requiring her to lecture on the mechanisms of probability[336], in her explanation, the world is made up of three layers: the physical layer that moves in accuracy with the laws of physics, the second layer that moves with the spirit, and the third layer of memory which is the recollection of events that lies within all things[14]. The memory layer rejects the loop of the physical and mental layers, the two layers the youkai conceive of the world which is why they believe history repeats itself and the future is predetermined. Since it's only possible to add to the memory layer, it's possible to completely recreate the past.

While the physical layer follows the laws of physics, the mental layer interprets the outcomes and the memory layer alters the probability, essentially creating the future, since it's impossible for memories to raech the same state as a point in the past, the future is not predetermined, thus when Reimu is able to predict how the dice will fall, she's not predicting the fall of the dice, the dice members the fact that she predicted how the dice would fall, thus due to this, Reimu entering the memory of the die-face greatly skews the results in Reimu's favor, where the results side with Reimu[337].

Thus the memory layer is essentially the most important layer that rejects the notion of loops from the previous two layers.

Dream vs. Reality

In the Touhou Project series, it is made very apparent that dream and reality are in truth one and the same.

In Changeability of Strange Dream, Maribel Hearn has a conversation with Renko Usami about how she is bringing objects out of her dreams[338], which Maribel posits that truth exists within subjectivity, if one can see the same sights over and over again then that's the kind of place it is as such dreams are nothing like the antonym of reality[339], where much longer ago people did not draw a distinction between dreams and reality[340], with Maribel reiterating that dreams and reality are the same[341].

In Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom it is shown that the Dream World is a separate plane[342], that in games like Antinomy of Common Flower are shown to have influence[343] on reality[344].

In the Urban Legends in Limbo finale, Sumireko notes that she is able to travel between the human world and Gensokyo whenver she sleeps, where her dream self enters Gensokyo[345] making her innately unable to be interacted with[346].

Trivia

  • Junko is the first Windows-era character with an official profile who does not have a title in her debut game. This is likely because she purified herself of identifying information. Koakuma and Daiyousei also lack titles in their respective games, but they do not have official profiles either.
  • She is also notable for being the first final boss in the Windows era who does not have a last name.
  • A silhouette of Junko appears on the front of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom's jewel case.

A being who holds a deep resentment for the Lunarians. She herself is a spirit who has been purified by that resentment. By now, she has no need even for information on what exactly she is.

She had a deep grudge against Chang'e, one of the Lunarians. Details are included in one of the game's endings, so things will be kept brief here, but it seems that she calmed her rage against the sages by repeatedly attacking the Lunar Capital. Her first grudge came about when her husband killed her child, but said grudge has already been purified to the point where her anger stands on its own.

Her existence is unknown to all but a select few of the Lunarians. It was hardly necessary for them to live in fear of her, after all. It's unknown if Chang'e has full knowledge of who she is, but she's likely aware of her to some extent.

Chang'e doesn't appear in the game itself, but she's a goddess of the Moon imprisoned in the Lunar Capital. She rules over the moon rabbits and is extremely powerful, but she doesn't show herself publicly. She is also a criminal who drank the Hourai Elixir.

Junko's plan to attack the Lunar Capital was as follows.

"I'll fill the Near Side of the Moon with fairies whose life force I purified, turning the Moon itself into a planet with life on it. Thus, the Lunar Capital's residents will have no choice but to flee. Then I'll seize that opportunity, and shoot Chang'e down as she's escaping."

The Lunar Capital was first founded by people who migrated to the Moon to escape the Earth's impurity (life force). Junko was going to cause the same thing to happen on the Moon.

The plan went well. The Sea of Tranquility began to fill with life. It seemed that the fairies from Hell thought the Moon to be a paradise. That's how awful the environment in Hell must've been.

The Lunarians couldn't raise a finger against her 'Planet with Life' plan.

However, Junko knew. The Lunarians would hardly wait around near all that impurity, and would flee into the Dream World. Anticipating this, she sent one of her friends over there as well.

Just as she planned, but perhaps not quite as she expected, the Lunarians showed no sign of action for over half a year. Junko was again at a loss as to how to attack the Lunar Capital. Both sides were locked in a stalemate. As her anger gradually began to settle, she thought she might have to reconsider her course of action.


It was then that a human, of all things, appeared before her. Not just any human, but one whose impurity had been wiped clean away. Likely due to the effects of some drug.


They did not abhor life, but no life could be felt from them. She never imagined that they'd come up with such a plan to send such a human in, but she felt at ease.

The lunar sages had done something she never expected. She could at least enjoy that fact. And thus, her current revenge drama came to a close.

  彼女は月の民、嫦娥(じょうが)に強い怨みを持っていた。   詳しいことはゲームの一部エンディングと被るので省くが、   繰り返し月の都を襲っては、賢者に怒りを静められる存在だったようだ。   夫に息子を殺された、と言うのが最初の怨みだが、既に怨みは純化し、   一人歩きしている様だ。


  その存在は一部の月の民しか知らされていない。   月の民には敵に怯える生活など不要だからだ。   嫦娥が彼女のことを知っているかは不明であるが、知らないことは無いだろう。


  嫦娥とは、今作品には出てこないが月の都に幽閉された、月の女神である。   月の兎の支配者でもあり、強大な力を持っているが、表に出ることは無い。   嫦娥は蓬莱の薬を使った罪人であるのだ。



  今回の月の都襲撃計画の概要はこうだ。


  「月の表側を、生命力を純化した妖精で満たし、    月そのものを生命の星にしてしまおう。    それによって、月の都は逃げ出すしか無い。    その隙を突いて、匿われている嫦娥を討つ」


  地上が穢れ(生命)で溢れるのを厭い、月に移住したのが月の都の始まりである。   それと同じ事を月でも起こそうとしたのだ。


  計画は順調だった。   静かの海は生命で満たされはじめた。   地獄の妖精達は、月を楽園だと思っていたようだ。   それほど地獄の環境は過酷なのだろう。


  月の民は、彼女の生命の星計画に手も足も出なかった。


  しかし、純狐には判っていた。   月の民はそのまま穢れの近くに居るはずが無い、夢の世界かどこかに逃げ込むだろう。   だから、先を読んでそこに友人を送り込んでいた。


  予想通りというか、期待外れというか、月の民は半年以上何の動きも見せなかった。   純狐もまた、月の都を攻めあぐねていた。双方手が出せない膠着状態が続いていた。   少しずつ、彼女の怒りは収まり、これからどうしようかと考えなおす頃合いであった。


  そんな時、現われたのはまさかの人間だった。   しかも穢れが浄化された人間である。何らかの薬の影響だろうか。


  生命を厭わず、生命を感じない。   そんな人間を犠牲にした奇策をうってくるなんて思ってもみなかったが、彼女は安心した。


  月の賢者は予想できない事をやってくる。   それが彼女の楽しみなのだ。   そして、ようやく今回の復讐劇は終わるのだと。

Misconceptions

Characters Have Flown Through Outerspace

One example of this is believed to be in Touhou 02's Stage 3 Scarlet Dream ~ Scarlet Dream where it displays stars and a space-like effect in the background[347], however this is actually the World of Fantasies, the world that lies between Makai and the human world, with Genji confirming this is definetely not outerspace as Reimu can breathe just fine there[348].

All Characters are Children

This is an argument that spawns from how small the characters look in different works, though this is moreso due to the "moe" artstyle Touhou tries to capture, in many of the manga characters look far older.

Majority of characters in the series are outright shown to drink alcohol on a daily basis[349], where one needs to be at least 20 years old under Japanese law to drink, where Japanese law requires no underaged characters to be shown drinking. This is even acknowledged in the series itself with a note saying alcohol is only for those over 20 years old[350]. Thus if a character is ever seen drinking alcohol in the series, they are an adult.

The only direct non-adults in the series are Sumireko Usami, Chiyuri Kitashirakawa, and Hieda no Akyuu in her first appearance.

Youkai Control the world through both the mental and physical layer

This statement comes from a fan translation that says this in Curiosities of Lotus Asia[351].

While the statement seems clear cut, there is another translation used instead that makes more sense with the sentence.

It instead notes that most youkai concieve of the world through these two layers, which is why they believe the future is pre-determined and history repeats itself[352]. This falls in line with the earlier disucssion of Rinnosuke claiming that he believes the future to be predetermined and Reimu needing to explain to him why that's not the case[336].

    Junko seems like quite a villanous person.
    That's right. Even the font for her name is a little bigger than the others. It's a little intimidating.
    That's why!? (laugh)
    Even her spell cards don't have two names - there's no prefix. She's very pure.
    In the end, what exactly is the "power of purification"?
    I wonder. That piques your curiosity the most, doesn't it (laugh).
    Maybe (laugh). Is it something like completely bringing out a certain property?
    I touched on it a little in Curiosities of Lotus Asia, but if I have to say it then it would be the power of the gods. A pure power from before things had names. When you give a name to something, its godly nature disappears. But she held onto that pure aspect all this time, and she can bestow it upon other things. It's a power that's almost like giving birth to a god.
    She's a character driven solely by revenge, but that seems unusual for Touhou.
    That's because she's a character outside Gensokyo; it's not something you'll find inside.
    I see. Is a 'sagacious spirit' a kind of divine spirit?
    It's hard to separate the character from the genre. She is a type of divine spirit, but it's hard to make a distinction so at the very least she's a spirit. In this case, it's a little hard to handle her. Who could there be to explain who she is or what she does?
    It could be Eirin (laugh).
    It could only be Eirin (laugh). Well, the Lunar Capital has a long list of troubles; you get a little glimpse of that. Perhaps from now on, you'll be able to see a little more of the problems of the outside world. Well, Sumireko is filled with gripes towards modern-day Japan, but as denizens of the outside world they're easy for us to grasp. It's the kind of thing you might see in a light novel.
    You don't seem like the type of person to read light novels (laugh).
    Well, I don't read them (laugh), but it's the type of thing that used to show up in Young Adult fiction. I tried bringing that feeling of discontent into Gensokyo. That's how it is this time around.
    When you get to the Extra Stage it just seems like she's become a fallen spirit, though. Something like, "Ah, yeah, yeah, it's been fun".
    After that, it definitely feels like something's going to happen. You can't help but think that.
    Even the ending is kind of like everyone telling each other, "The Lunarians really make me angry, you know?"
    That's right, the only person that is actually a Lunarian is Sagume. It's very troublesome. Fundamentally, the Lunarians and Gensokyo have always been hostile. Well, it's not so much Gensokyo as all of the surface. Although if I had to say it, then it's really the Lunarians being one-sidedly hostile. Like "I totally don't want to meet them" or "Those people have cooties, gross". Of course, if you're one-sidedly treated like that, you'd end up hating them in return.
    Thanks to that relationship, if you bring back a stone or alcohol, you're told "good job".
    Nobody ever thought that they wanted to march over and beat them up, just because they hated them. If they mutually hate each other, it's better to just stay separated. No one thinks about gaining any advantage from fighting. If the Lunar Capital had tried to relocate without fighting, then Gensokyo's inhabitants would have disappeared before they realized.
    That's way too frightening. At that rate, the flow of things would have led to the night being stopped again.
    That would become another game in itself, wouldn't it. Well, in this game the flow of things led to the resolution of the problem, but it was more that the solution strategy worked for the time being.
    However, isn't it more like the flow of things led to defending against the invading enemies?
    It's a little bothersome to show that flow of things in only six stages of a shooting game (laugh). I wouldn't be able to explain everything. If there was a plot twist in the middle, it would be better to have something longer."

I felt like this game's own kind of Touhou-ness, own kind of playstyle and relationships between characters really got to shine. It was really good.

It made me think that might be what's really good about these kinds of games.
    GM: I was a bit worried about that part, but I'm glad it worked out.

    ZUN: (laugh) — Well, last, about the Reimu I played. I was kind of embarrassed in parts, and don't really know if you can call what I did roleplay. But in the final danmaku battle, watching the bullets fly past me even without doing anything, I really felt invincible for a moment, and like Reimu's character really ended up shining through somehow. I know the dice rolls are random and stuff, but it's interesting how you can see it like that.
    GM: Yeah, that's true. Of course, the numbers you get when rolling dice are just products of chance, but I think being able to sense meaning in them is one of the great things about tabletop RPGs. And since they're random, they end up going differently every time. (laugh)
