Background

Ruan Mei is a character in Honkai: Star Rail.

A sweet-tempered and elegant scholar. Member #81 of the Genius Society. An expert in the biological sciences. She earned Nous' attention with her talent and terrifying perseverance, and began her research on the origin of life in a secret corner of the universe.

For that, she was invited by Herta to collaborate with Screwllum and Stephen to develop the Simulated Universe.

Secretly, she greatly enjoys traditional theater and desserts, and she is also very interested in embroidery.

Lore

A scholar of exquisite temperament, member #81 of the illustrious Genius Society, and an expert in the field of life sciences. She earned Nous' attention with her talent and terrifying perseverance, and began her research on the origin of life in a secretive corner of the universe. Subsequently, she was invited by Herta to collaborate with Screwllum and Stephen to develop the Simulated Universe. Privately, she revels in traditional theater and desserts, and she is also very interested in embroidery.

During her childhood, she received early exposure to science from her mother, who was a "scientist."

Her life in a tiny house with her family of science enthusiasts was filled with love. As such, it wasn't long before she realized there were subtle differences in "love," each kind coming with different scents.

Her grandmother with silver hair was a fan of traditional theater with its humming and chirping, while her father wore a pair of large, furry boots. Her parents loved each other, but they still argued from time to time. She was an impassive girl who made mistakes all the time, but was also forgiven all the time.

"I was closer with Aunt Arlice compared to my other relatives, as she would buy me snacks. Her love was the best."

Soon, the young girl learned to be stubborn. Her understanding of "love" broke away from the formulae taught in textbooks. As she grew older, her mother became strict with her. Together, they walked one step at a time on a vast glacial planet. The girl gasped and stopped on the way, carefully observing the fantastical and enchanting "lifeforms" buried beneath the glaciers - What used to be lifeforms, at least.

Every time she arrived home after going on scientific expeditions, it was time for "rewards" — When she took a small bite of the cake, the mouthwatering aroma would immediately cling to the roof of her mouth. Her insignificant anticipation always gave her mother's research an inviting smell.

Starting from their home, a planet blessed by Abundance, they boarded research aircraft and set off to more worlds. Surrounded by flash bombs, silk headscarves, ribbons, and embroidery, the girl embraced joy amongst "lifeforms" created by spiraling and ascending data.

"A-Ruan, after eating Qingtuan, you must wash your fingers thoroughly before you can touch the lab bench."

She was dressed all in black in a mourning attire at her parents' funeral. As usual, she still tied her hair neatly. Her expression was hidden behind her ink-black strands of hair.

She did not shed a single tear.

As the night fell, layers of geometric patterns formed by data spirals appeared on the screen in the lab. They shifted, expanded, and flowed along with the sound of traditional theater songs. After peeling away the layers of the patterns, the secret she meticulously crafted and protected with care was revealed — her parents with their eyes closed. Their faces were as impassive as if they were asleep.

"This is a let-down. They failed to keep their promise with Grandma."

"And I, too, let them down for failing to protect them as promised."

"Only science... never lets anyone down," she said.

Wanting her parents to be equal, she stopped using her previous nickname and gave herself a new name by combining each of her parents' surnames.

Since then, whenever someone asked her about her "home," there would be a flash of confusion in her eyes. She seems to have forgotten everything. In such a state, she started working around the clock on her calculations. She was so engrossed in her research that she never ate regularly. When she was on a roll, she could spend entire days and nights working on research without sleeping, and only dozed off when she hit her limit.

Soon, she was only relying on the faint glow of fireflies to gather her research results every night. The more dismissive she was of the existing laws of life, the quicker she progressed. She totally disregarded formulas, then moved on to ignoring the meaning of life. She simply observed, assessed with her hands, held the data in her palm to feel it, then proceeded to concoct new laws for species.

As a result, the ferns and flowers in her lab flourished ever more. They grew at a speed visible to the human sight, and ultimately filled every space in the lab. In the space between the flowers and leaves laid the serene and emotionless countenance of her parents, formed by the aggregation of "data."

The moment her sleeping "parents" were about to open their eyes — By then, she had nearly destroyed the existing laws of biological evolution on the entire planet, yet she still marched on toward her goal. It wasn't until she looked up from her research and stared at the sky did she notice the gaze of the Erudition had descended upon her.

After receiving the gaze of Nous, she left her home and began a reclusive life.

No one knew what she asked Nous, but after that incident, she became even more apathetic and impassive, and even more immersed in her research —She would only study the fundamental nature of "life."

A greater variety of "lifeforms" came into existence through her concoction. Some "burning" lifeforms became flowing flames that crept and weaved under her feet. Sometimes, she felt like she was fire itself. Some "fluid" beings turned into liquid light that slithered around her slender wrists. Sometimes, she felt like she was light itself. Some living things concocted from "knowledge" attempted to develop their own thoughts, sentience, and emotions. They sometimes rambunctiously cry, guffaw, or wail — all these have been fused into her body.

Yet, she could not feel them. Life only exists for such a short time, after all. They fleetingly pass from birth to death, and her research is the only constant.

Occasionally, her casual "research" would shake the schools of biology. Her "research" transformed many planets. Flying whales, swimming deer, fearful flowers, and trees with a vast root system... Her creations have already went beyond the scope of experience and imaginations comprehensible to organic life.

She kept pushing herself for a more in-depth understanding of "life," just to bring herself closer to Nous — and THEIR unforgettable glance.

Aeons... What kind of beings are they? Are they also a form of life?

As her "groundbreaking" studies rose to fame with in the cosmic academic community, people always tried to disrupt her life as a recluse. She turned to look at the letter from the Genius Society on the desk and, once again, dumped it into the trashcan.

She is surrounded by an eccentric science fanatic from a small town, an inorganic lifeform, and a puppet girl. They indulge in afternoon tea and collaborate in research. They squabble loudly and giggle from time to time.

When did she first meet them? She can't remember, only that it was for a project. She was forced to be there — that, she is certain. With leisure, she munches on the cake. She became a part of this solely for the sake of simulated "Aeons," which are worth her time and efforts.

They are worth her time... but not worth being forced to socialize.

"Genius Society? I do not care."

"This is a strange, instinctive feeling. That one named 'Herta' is rather similar to me. I mean... similar on a deeper level."

She is certain that she won't make another mistake. It's because she no longer trusted anyone, so she won't be let down again, and... she won't let anyone else down again. What is the fundamental essence of "life"... Where does "life" end? Do the answers really exist?

Not a trace of emotion can be discerned on her emotionless and silent face. Yet, her hair is roiling with the heat of boiling and steaming, and the rims of her eyes are slightly red — she is enjoying this.

Only the word "Aeon" can stir her heart. Everything else in the universe is a mere distraction.

How interesting. On the "incubator," a "life" nurtured by the "rice cooker" popped out in perfection. The method with which life is created is miraculous. How romantic. She knows better than anyone the price one has to pay to study Aeons... but she does not care. She knows! She might even — become...!?

The time is just right — The update for the "project" is about to commence.

She turns around and leaves. Unbeknownst to the girl, her grandmother has always been watching her through the monitor, day after day for countless years.

"A-Ruan... My A-Ruan. When we finally meet again, would it be...?"

Personality

  • Worldview: Ruan Mei views the universe as something to study and learning it's biology, comparing it to cooking, where one must study it and not freak out when complaints are made. She tries to find the answer to the question "What is the essence of life?" With her noting life is countless and varied in form[6].

Left behind most of her creations, though she noted that her creations move her, where she notes she doesn't understand what "love" is and cannot respond to those feelings, and is at a loss for how she should handle her creation[14])

Codex Statistics

Grade: A

Tier: 4-B

Cardinality: Finite

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: Solar System level (Potency) (Ruan Mei noted that if the danger was too great for The Trailblazer, she would've stepped in to fight Starcrusher Swam King: Skaracabz[15]. All party members are relative to The Trailblazer, even if they haven't been in main story missions, as their data versions can fight with them in the Simulated Universe, which is generated from The Trailblazer's memories pre-loading data versions of all the people they've met [16], where the bosses are stronger and more powerful in the Simulated Universe then the actual bosses they fought, making her comparable to The Trailblazer who fought and defeated Phantylia, who can casually "crush" one with the weight of a star, causing a massive explosion, along with greatly dwarfing the planet in size[17] and Dan Heng, who was noted in Part III of Himeko's character story that he defeated monsters that can swallow stars in just one strike of his lance[18])

Durability: Solar System level (Comparable to the Astral Express Crew, who can tank a star destruction at point-blank range[19], which gets these levels of energy)

Striking Strength: Unknown: True Class (Uses her Ruan for attacks)

Attack Speed: Massively Hypersonic (Comparable to The Trailblazer who is comparable to Seele[21], who could cut a bullet right before it reached Bronya[22], reaching these speeds, and move faster then Bronya's gun[23]. Can fight against Kafka, who in her ultimate views all of the bullets as stationary, reaching these speeds. Comparable to Fu Xuan, who viewed Kafka's bullets as moving so slow she can casually turn them around to hit each other reaching these speeds), likely Far Higher (Comparable to The Trailblazer, Can dodge iridescent beams from Mask of No Thoughts from a distance[24])

Reaction Speed: Massively Hypersonic, likely Far Higher

Stamina: Unknown

Range: Standard Melee, Several Meters with Ruan

Intelligence: Supergenius Intelligence

She is one of the four geniuses that worked to create a program that contains an entire universe just like the universe they live in but more streamlined and customized[25], cultivated the simulated Aeon along with Screwllum[26]. Noted by Herta that Ruan Mei is a genius in the field of biology, possessing extraordinary perception and cognitive integration abilities, easily capturing microscopic details of reality and synthesizing them into a torrent of information within her mind, which she uses for deductive thinking[27]. People not a part of the Genius Society have done things like recreate someone's memories an consciousness into an android that fully believed they were an actual person and that they were human, where even the most advanced diagnostic equipment couldn't detect the difference between her and a real person[28])
Ruan Mei's achievements in the field of life sciences resonate throughout the universe, with the IPC classifying her as a hermit genius[29]. Ruan Mei cultivated and created Starcrusher Swarm King Skaracabaz as a replica of the Emanator of Propagation[30]. Ruan Mei uses touch to open her senses and let all the details of one's biological existence flood into her brain, helping her understand one's construction as a living organism[31]. Created a sweet, that controls what one says[32]. Someone making a downgraded version of Ruan Mei's life cultivation formula where the beings aren't intelligent[33], unlike Ruan Mei's actual creations that have intelligence[34])

Knowledge: Grandmaster level

Ruan Mei is noted to be a master in the field of creation, cultivating the protoplasms of the simulated Aeons[35]. Views the progress of the universe from its microscopic creatures and macroscopic creatures as very simple, wishing to discuss "the true essence of life," something that all individuals possess unknowingly[36]. Members of the Genius Society view the Intelligentsia Guild as the "mediocre", not being considered amongst the cream of the crop[37]. Members of the Genius Society are sent a signal by the Aeon of Erudition, inviting geniuses to join in the search for answers to the universe, where Nous views mortals that have created a priceless asset of civilization with their diligence and wisdom as mere insignificant achievements not worthy of his glance, to truly join the genius society itself, one needs to acknowledge the conclusion that "the answer to the universe is beyond the limits of mortal wisdom"[38].

The cognition from the fragments of the subconsciousness in the Memory Zone created various enemies imbued with a specific cogniton from the subconscious[45]), Immortality (Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; Characters in Star Rail can forgot their physical bodies, and still exist, this is mainly shown with Memokeepers that follow the Path of Rememberance, sacrificing their wordly bodies allow them to traverse the universe in the form of memes[46], with these memetic entities possessing no moral flesh, unconstrained by physical limits being made purley of ideas and memories[47], with memes themself being an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture. Noted by a Garden of Recollection Member that even if all matter is annihilated, it can continue to live on in the form of memories[48]. Reliance [On Memories]; To prevent oneself from being forgotten from the world, one makes the world remember them, if they are forgotten then they use their memories to re-create the world[49]), Non-Standard Interaction (Metaphysical Interaction; All characters are able to interact with Wubbaboos, a subspecies of Astral Spirits, that exist in the form of spiritual entites[50]. Along with this, immortality and resurrection is seen as a mere status effect within Honkai: Star Rail as characters like Pela can debuff the Mara-Struck Soldiers ability to revive themself making it where they die that the Mara-Struck does not heal them as opposed to the other soldier who wasn't debuffed).

The girl, packing away her surveying tools, gazes at the new world within reach, filled with anticipation. "That place is a mess. Don't you run off once we get there. I won't have you two getting kidnapped again..." The man in cowboy attire grumbles as he cleans his weapon, then walks over to the sofa with a drink, shaking his head in resignation. "The Land of the Dreams promises infinite possibilities. We'll surely make our mark... Hey, conductor, if we fall in love with that place and never return, would you miss us?" The Nameless dressed like a gentleman winks at Pom-Pom, smiling. "'You can't joke at the conductor's expense like this!' Is that what you want to say, conductor?" The girl's mischievous grin spreads across her face. "You guys are! So! Mean!" Bubbles drift up and down in the glass as the Express fills up with joyful laughter. ... The youthful silhouettes of these Nameless get gradually swallowed by memoria. "Have a... safe... trip...please..." When the conductor turns their head, the Express is already empty. The conductor stand frozen, this scene hauntingly familiar, as if lived through countless times before.''

"You seem in high spirits today" "Yes... after all, there's a very important 'performance'." "Indeed. The Charmony Festival's rehearsal is about to start. Please head to the preparation room." ...

She steps out from the dressing room, leaving behind the brilliant lights of the theater, fading into the distance.

Past Self in Mirror

She once loved to seal the moment when plum blossoms were on the verge of wilting and keep them close to her.

It has been many years since then. Many lifeforms — rambunctious, sweet, and everything in between — have bloomed from her hands, but the plum blossoms still wilt at their preordained times. It has been many years since then. Her visage in the mirror seems untouched by time. But, in the grand scheme of the cosmos, is she too destined to last for but a fleeting moment?

"If all is set for eventual demise, what purpose, then, does creation serve?" After a silence that seems to stretch to eternity, the winds blow, the petals fall, and the reflection in the mirror tenders the same answer as always. "For the day when plum blossoms are no longer kept." She deftly caresses the icy surface of the mirror. Such soliloquies have happened too many times for her to count.

Explanations

Paths

The paths that Star Rail characters have in game are not the actual paths they follow, there is an innate difference between using the abilities of a path and being a Pathriders of that path[90] being apart of different factions[91]. For example, March 7th is listed under the Path of Preservation[92], though she is apart of the Trailblaze path as a member of the Astral Express[93], one does not necessarily need to be in a path to us their abilities either, the Trailblazer while they were trying to protect March 7th from the Doomsday Beast, created a forcefield[94], despite using abilities from Destruction[95]. Thus the path one has in game mainly refers to their abilities and not the actual path they follow, this applies with Light Cones too.
