This dropdown contains the synopsis of Jonathan Joestar's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Pre-Phantom Blood (1868-1880)
Jonathan Joestar was born on April 4th, 1868 to wealthy businessman George Joestar I and his wife Mary Joestar. As an infant he was in a carriage crash which killed his mother. George, believing a thief by the name of Dario Brando had saved his and Jonathan's life vowed to repay the debt. Due to the accident Jonathan lived most of his childhood without his mother in the Joestar Mansion. When Jonathan was five years old his father bought him a dog named Danny. At first Jonathan and Danny didn't get along with Jonathan antagonizing Danny until one day where Danny saved Jonathan from drowning in a river. Moved by his dogs actions Jonathan would stop antagonizing Danny and would teach him various tricks. In 1880 Jonathan would be told about Dario and how he saved his life along with being told that he passed away and that his son Dio Brando would come to live with him.

Phantom Blood (1880-1888)
One day Jonathan would come in aid of a young girl named Erina Pendleton who was being bullied by two kids, only for Jonathan to get beaten up for being from a wealthy family. When Erina tried to help him, Jonathan refused telling her as an inspiring gentleman he helped her not to get her attention but because it was the right thing to do. As Jonathan returned home he would see a kid around his age jump out of a carriage who he would realize is Dio. Jonathan would greet Dio and would try to introduce Dio to his dog, Danny however as Danny got near the two Dio would kick Danny in the face which would make Jonathan angry.

Afterwards Dio would be greeted by George who would convince Jonathan to forgive Dio but despite Jonathan's wishes to be friends with Dio, he would instead be victimized by Dio when he attempted to grab his luggage for him. Dio would continue to harass Jonathan for a year in many ways. Dio would outperform Jonathan in school and his perfect manners would make Jonathan look bad in front of his father. During a boxing match Dio would punch Jonathan in the face, shoving his thumb in Jonathan's eyes infront of all of Jonathan peers. After the match Dio badmouth Jonathan telling everyone he can't keep a secret. Dio would even steal from Jonathan, taking his gold pocket watch without his permission.

Despite Dio's harassment Jonathan would cross paths with Erina again who he would become close to and even fall in love with. Unfortunately for Jonathan, Dio would learn of their relationship and Dio, not wanting Jonathan to be happy would forcibly kiss Erina so that he would be her first kiss and not Jonathan. Due to Erina's shame she would stop talking to Jonathan which would leave Jonathan to learning what Dio did to her. Confronting him at the Joestar Mansion, Jonathan would attempt to fight and defeat Dio which due to his resolve for Erina's honor he would be able to do. During the fight Jonathan would notice the Stone Mask on the wall react to Dio's blood, right after he noticed this George would come and break up the fight. Sometime later Jonathan would learn Danny had be placed inside an incinerator and was burned to death. Despite what the police had said Jonathan believed Dio was the culprit behind Danny's murder. Sometime later Jonathan and Dio would make peace and would get along much better.

Seven years later in 1888, George would become ill and Jonathan would attend Hugh Hudson Academy where he was a promising archology graduate along with being a star rugby player. Despite making peace with Dio, Jonathan still didn't feel any sort of friendship with him.

While experimenting with the Stone Mask from seven years prior Jonathan would find a letter from Dio's father Dario, which Jonathan would read only for him to find out that Dario shared the same symptoms as George. Due to this Jonathan would become suspicious of Dio who had been bringing George his medicine for the entire time while he was sick. Jonathan would tell Dio to swear on his father's life that he was innocent which would cause Dio to have an outburst of anger causing him to attack Jonathan although he would be quickly overpowered. Dio's rage towards his father would solidify Jonathan's suspicions causing him to leave George in the care of his own doctors while he sets off to have Dio's medicine examined.

Jonathan's searches would lead him to Ogre Street in search of the potion seller, Wang Chan. While in Ogre Street, Jonathan would be attacked by a group of thugs who he would defeat using his brute strength. Due to Jonathan's resolve along with the fact Jonathan spared his and his friends' life, the leader of the group, Robert E. O. Speedwagon would agree to help Jonathan find Wang Chan who would confess to selling poison to Dio.

Jonathan and Speedwagon would await for Dio's return at the Joestar Mansion. When Dio returned Jonathan would not only reveal that he figured out Dio's plans but would also reveal that the London Police, George, and Wang Chan were all hiding beside him. Unfortunately for Jonathan, Dio had figured out how to use the Stone Mask and was ready to use it. Dio would try to stab Jonathan but would instead stab George who had leaped in front of Jonathan to protect him. Dio would put on the Stone Mask which had been covered in George's blood causing the police to open fire on Dio, blasting him out the window. Jonathan would hold his dying father hearing his last words before passing away in Jonathan's arms.

Suddenly right after George's death, Dio, revealing himself to be alive and fully healed, would jump into the Joestar Mansion and would smash a man's had to bits infront of everybody. Shocked, Jonathan would attempt to shoot Dio but was unable to do so leading to Speedwagon to shooting him. Dio would survive and regenerate from this attack as he had become a Vampire.

Dio would effortlessly kill the police and would break Speedwagon's arm. Jonathan would do his best to fend of Dio but to no avail. Viewing there is nothing else he could do Jonathan would light the mansion ablaze burning Dio in the process. Jonathan would then lure Dio to the roof of the building allowing the fire to spread only for Jonathan to tackle Dio back into the mansion bringing the two into a free fall. Dio would break Jonathan's ribs and would use his strength to stick to the wall as Jonathan fell to the ground. While falling Jonathan would grab part of a spear impaled in his shoulder and would use it to stick to the wall. Using his belt Jonathan would grab Dio's leg and would drag him back into a free fall. While falling the two would greatly injure each other with Jonathan stabbing Dio with the knife used to kill his father and Dio breaking both of Jonathan's arms. Right before the two would hit the ground, Jonathan would kick Dio into the direction of a statue impaling him while also cushioning Jonathan's fall. Jonathan would jump out the window leaving Dio to burn to death while stuck. Jonathan had defeated Dio however he was badly burned, bruised, and had multiple bones broken but despite this he would live for another day.

Speedwagon would take Jonathan to a hospital, where he would end up crossing paths with Erina for the first time in seven years. Despite Dio's actions, Erina's feelings towards Jonathan have not changed causing Erina to take extensive care of Jonathan while he was healing.

After Jonathan was discharged from the hospital he would investigate the rubble of the Joestar Mansion with Erina. During his short search for the Stone Mask, Jonathan would encounter a strange man who would jump at him and punch him in the diaphragm squeezing all the air out of Jonathan's lungs. Suddenly Jonathan's broken arm would begin to start healing until it was no longer broken. The man would introduce himself as Baron Zeppeli, telling Jonathan and Erina that he is their ally and that he needs Jonathan's help to stop Dio, who had survived the destruction of the Joestar Mansion. Jonathan would question that man's mysterious powers and Baron would explain that he is using a breathing technique called Sendō which allows him to generate Hamon energy which allows the user to gain various abilities. Baron Zeppeli would offer to teach Jonathan Sendō who would agree to be trained. After training with Baron, who's real name is Will Anthonio Zeppeli, for two weeks Jonathan would be attacked by Wang Chan who had be zombified by Dio. Using the knowledge he gained from Will, Jonathan would swiftly defeat Wang Chan which would prove to Will that Jonathan was ready battle Dio and the Stone Mask.

With help from Speedwagon, Jonathan and Will would find out Dio was located in Windknight's Lot, resulting in Jonathan, Will, and Speedwagon travelling together to face Dio. While nearing the town the group's carriage would be attacked by a zombified Jack the Ripper, who would trap the group inside a tunnel by causing a collapse. Will would attack the Zombie, kicking it in the face before he retreated into a secret passageway. Will would hand Jonathan as glass of wine, telling him that he must defeat the Zombie on his own and that he can't spill a drop of the wine while doing so or else he will stop training Jonathan. Jonathan would accept Will's challenge and would enter the secret passageway. Using his Hamon, Jonathan would sense Jack the Ripper's presence and would send his Hamon through a wall killing the Zombie and completing the challenge.

After the battle a boy would steal the group's money prompting them to chase the thief who would lead them to a grave yard. The group would realize that the boy had been hypnotized by Dio and that they had fallen into his trap as Dio and his army of Zombies would attack them. Using his Hamon abilities, Jonathan would help Will and Speedwagon dispatch the Zombies and would begin to scale the natural stone pillar Dio was standing on. Will would attempt to attack Dio only for Dio to flash freeze his arm and would have killed him if Jonathan had not intervened and blocked Dio's punch. Dio would proceed to break Will's leg and would overpower both Jonathan and Will sending them back to the ground. Dio would then call upon two legendary knights he had brough back from the dead, Bruford and Tarkus and would command them to attack. Due to Will's frozen arm and broken leg, Jonathan had to face the two Zombies by himself.

Bruford would attack Jonathan with his hair, restraining his arm while also sucking his blood. Jonathan would escape Bruford's attack by using his Hamon to burn the hair off. Bruford, impressed by this would ask Dio if he could take on Jonathan on his own which Dio agrees to. Bruford, wielding his sword using his hair would swing at Jonathan, who would dodge the attack but would fall into a lake in the process. Bruford would follow Jonathan into the lake who would use the water to his advantage, using it as a medium for his Hamon to travel towards Bruford which would launch him out of the water. Jonathan would remember Jack the Ripper's behavior and would compare it to Bruford's and would realize Zombies can remember their past. Jonathan would then restrained by a large amount of Bruford's hair making him unable to use his arms or move. Bruford would then strike at Jonathan with his sword but would be unable to hit him as Jonathan's leg had broken out of the hair and kicked his sword which conducted Jonathan's Hamon through it melting Bruford's arm. Jonathan would then completely break out of the hair and would beat down Bruford with a barrage of punches sending the Zombie flying into a wall. Jonathan would then see Bruford in pain and would realize Bruford still has a human soul. Bruford would try to attack Jonathan but Jonathan wouldn't dodge the attack as Burford would stop his attack as he had regained his soul. Bruford would tell Jonathan that his hate for the world was no longer with him and would give Jonathan his sword as a gift remaining it from "Luck" to "Pluck". Bruford would then die from the Hamon leaving one more Zombie for Jonathan to face.

Tarkus would step in and crush Bruford's remains and would launch them at the Will who had just healed his wounds. Will would be injured but would manage to heal quickly and escape with Jonathan. While fleeing Tarkus, Jonathan would save the boy who had be hypnotized by Dio, named Poco, from Tarkus. Approaching a cliff Jonathan and Will would use their Hamon to magnetize a large amount of leaves together forming a hang-glider. Speedwagon and Poco would grab onto Jonathan and Will as the group glide away from Tarkus. Tarkus however would jump onto the glider and would try to attack the group. Jonathan and the others would jump towards a nearby balcony and would land safely while Tarkus fell through a wall. Jonathan would walk into a nearby room and would be ambushed as a steel collar would be put on his neck and he would be dragged into and trapped in the room. Jonathan would be pulled into the Lair of the Two-Headed Dragon where he would have to fight Tarkus in a death match where they are both chained by the neck and are attached to the same chain which is attached to the roof of the lair. The collar would restrict Jonathan's breathing putting him at a disadvantage against Tarkus who would easily overpower him. Thankfully for Jonathan, Poco would crawl through a small hole and would open the door keeping Will from aiding him. Will would attempt to attack Tarkus but would instead be bisected by his chains, fatally injuring him. Using the last of his strength, Will would give Jonathan all of his life energy which would amplify his strength allowing him to break the collar and defeat Tarkus. Jonathan would hold Will, who would tell Jonathan that he is proud of him and that he considers him as both his son and his best friend. Soon after, Will would die in Jonathan's arms.

Jonathan, Speedwagon, and Poco would make it to Windknight's Lot where they would soon learn that the town had already been inflected with Zombies. Jonathan would then be approached by a Zombie named Dire, who he he would trade an attack with. However Dire would reveal he is not a Zombie but a human and ally of Will, only attacking Jonathan to test his skills. Dire would show Jonathan a letter from Will which asked for Dire's help. The letter also asked for the aid of Dire's ally Straizo and his Hamon teacher, Master Tonpetty. Jonathan and Speedwagon would tell the three the news about Will and would then set off to Dio's castle.

Once at Dio's castle, Jonathan would defeat the Zombie named Doobie who was attacking Poco's sister, before entering Dio's room. Dio would tell his Zombies to stand down as he wanted to take care of Jonathan himself. Despite this Dire would attack Dio first but would be flash frozen and reduced to a head. Before dying Dire would use a Hamon infused rose to harm Dio. Inspired by Dire, Jonathan would infuse his Luck and Pluck sword with Hamon to bypass Dio's flash freezing. While Dio's Zombies would begin to attack Jonathan's allies, Jonathan himself would be attacked by Dio who would jump at him. Jonathan would throw Hamon infused roses that he grabbed before at Dio and would use this as a distraction, rushing towards Dio's blind side. Jonathan would chop Dio's right arm off and would them cut him down the middle through his head all the way to his torso before his arms would be flash frozen by Dio. Dio would stick his fingers in Jonathan's neck and would proceed to taught Jonathan as he grabbed his carotid, threating to burst it open. Jonathan would attempt to kick Dio who would block his kick with one of his own before stomping on his foot freezing both his right leg and left foot. Dio would taunt Jonathan even more, offering Jonathan vampiric extract for life force, Jonathan however had a different plan as his sword was caught in a torches flame as it was stabbing Dio thawing out Jonathan's hands allowing him to attack Dio once more. Dio would inject Jonathan with vampiric extract before being punched in the face by Jonathan. Jonathan would realize his attack was unable to melt Dio as he had been able to freeze Jonathan's hand as soon as it made contact with his face. Using his Hamon to squeeze the vampiric extract of out his neck Jonathan would prepare to attack Dio once more, who would jump at him. Jonathan would light both his hands on fire and would punch Dio, using the fire to counteract Dio's freezing. Jonathan would be able to punch through Dio allowing the Hamon to spread through Dio's body as he fell from his castle. While falling Dio would try to fire pressurized fluid from his eyes at Jonathan who would attempt to block it only for it to pass through his arms and nearly hit his face. Despite everything Dio had done, Jonathan would shed tears for Dio before falling to the ground of exhaustion. After recovering Jonathan and his allies would take care of every Zombie left in the town and would the destroy the Stone Mask, finally defeating it and Dio.

On February 2nd, 1889 Jonathan would marry Erina and would head off to America on February 3rd by ship for his honeymoon. Jonathan's friends and allies would see him off as he and his wife boarded the vessel.

While eating dinner with Erina, Jonathan would spot Wang Chan on board the ship and would proceed to chase after him. Once he caught up to him, Jonathan would see Wang Chan pull out a a jar from a coffin. This jar contained Dio's head who had survived his battle with Jonathan by chopping of his head before the Hamon could spread to it. Dio would tell Jonathan that he has came for the body of the only man he respected, that man being Jonathan. Dio would then fire pressurized fluid at Jonathan who would fail to dodge his attack resulting in the fluid going through Jonathan's neck fatally injuring him. Due to being injured in the neck, Jonathan was unable to breath and was unable to produce more Hamon. As Wang Chan tried to attack him, Jonathan used the last of his Hamon to kill Wang Chan and launched him towards the ship's paddle screw shaft. The Hamon in Wang Chan's body would start to make his cells go haywire causing his body to grab onto the shaft with all his strength. Jonathan's plan was to blow up the ship through a pressure build up in order to take out Dio and the other passengers who had been infected by Wang Chan. While Erina intended to stay by Jonathan's side, Jonathan would tell her to escape with an infant who's mother had died protecting her baby. Dio would make a last ditch effort to take Jonathan's body telling him he could survive using the coffin he came from as it could withstand the explosion. While charging towards Jonathan, Dio would be stabbed and restrained by him as Erina and the baby prepared to board the coffin. Jonathan would tell Erina to take care as she entered to coffin while reflecting on how he and Dio's fates are intertwined with each other. Dio would try to convince Jonathan to let him go, promising him immortality only to realize Jonathan had died of his injuries. The two would then seemly be engulfed in an explosion.

Legacy
Somehow Dio managed to take Jonathan's body as his own and would somehow enter a secret part of the coffin before the entire ship exploded. Two days later Erina and the baby would be saved near the canary islands and the coffin would sink to the bottom of the ocean where Dio would be trapped for nearly one hundred years. When Dio, now known as DIO, became free from his deep sea prison he would use Jonathan's body to impregnate four women giving birth to Giorno Giovanna, Donatello Versus, Ungalo, and Rikiel. DIO also would stab Jonathan's body with a Stand Arrow giving him and all of Jonathan's living descendants Stands.

The Joestar bloodline would live on as Erina had been pregnant with Jonathan's baby who would be named George Joestar II. The baby Erina rescued would become the wife of George II, Elizabeth Joestar. Jonathan's grandson Joseph Joestar would inherit his Hamon potential and his great-great-grandson Jotaro Kujo would later defeat DIO in 1989 finally killing him one hundred years after Jonathan's death. Jonathan's remains would be burned in Egypt so that he could finally rest in peace. Jotaro and his daughter Jolyne Cujoh would help completely rid the world of DIO's influence aiding in the defeat of Enrico Pucci eliminating DIO's heaven plan for good.

Equipment

  • Luck & Pluck: A powerful longsword once wielded by the legendary knight, Bruford. This sword was passed down onto Jonathan after he defeated Bruford and restored his humanity.
  • Spear: A spear that Jonathan briefly used to combat Dio Brando, right after Dio’s transformation into a Vampire.
  • Wine Glass: A simple glass of wine that Jonathan was tasked with carrying during his first battle against Dio’s minions. If he was to spill a single drop of wine from the glass, William Zeppeli swore he would no longer train him.

(Jonathan obtained this Stand postmortem, when his body was under the control of DIO. Jonathan has never used this Stand himself)

  • Namesake: The Hermit (Tarot Card)
  • Type: Close-Range Stand, Reconnaissance, Natural Non-Humanoid
  • Ability: Hermit Purple’s vines have the ability to conduct Hamon through them, which itself is incredibly potent. Furthermore, if Hermit Purple comes in contact with a piece of technology, it can psychically produce images of people around the world. DIO used this Stand to spy on the Stardust Crusaders.

Notable Techniques

  • Hamon: Hamon, also know as Ripple is life energy that produces the same type of energy waves as the sun. These waves are created by breathing in a special way that allows the user to use the energy produced by blood flow throughout the body. Jonathan learned this technique from Will Anthonio Zeppeli who would teach Jonathan Hamon in order to defeat Dio Brando. Hamon can be used to amplify the user's strength, heal wounds and diseases, send energy through objects, walk on water, and more. Hamon is especially good at harming Vampires as it is their main weakness.
    • Overdrive: A basic form of attacking using Hamon which amplifies the attack of the user to a superhuman degree.
    • Zoom Punch: Using Hamon, Jonathan is able to dislocate his arm while punching in order to hit his opponent from a distance. The Hamon Jonathan produces is able to soften the pain of his arm dislocating and relocating it once the attack is finished.
    • Ripple Detector: By using some type of liquid, a Hamon user is able to detect and feel the life force of others around them. Jonathan used this to detect Jack the Ripper during their battle.
    • Sendō Hamon Overdrive: Jonathan is able to send his Hamon through a wall to attack his opponent. Jonathan used to kill Jack the Ripper during their battle
    • Sticking Ripple & Repelling Ripple: By creating ripples in the water using Hamon, Jonathan is able to walk across the surface of it. This is caused by the surface of the water repelling the Hamon in the Hamon users body like if it were opposing magnets of the same polarity.
    • Sunlight Yellow Overdrive: Jonathan is able to release Hamon infused strikes on to his opponents. This attack is especially deadly for Zombies and Vampires whose bodies can't handle Hamon.
    • Scarlet Overdrive: Jonathan is able to charge Hamon into his hand setting it one fire allowing Jonathan to light opponents and objects one fire. Jonathan used this to burn off Bruford's hair during their battle.
    • Turquoise Blue Overdrive: Jonathan is able to use water as medium to conduct Hamon and is able to send his Hamon through water to attack his opponent. Jonathan used this to attack Bruford while underwater.
    • Overdrive Barrage: Jonathan can unleash a barrage of punches infused with hamon.
    • Life Magnetism Overdrive: Using Hamon, Jonathan is able to pull leaves together as if they were magnets connecting and form them into a large sheet which he can use to glid across large distances.
    • Ripple Hypnosis: Jonathan is able to make the cells of his opponent go haywire using his Hamon. Jonathan used this to make Doobie's snakes attack him as well as making Wang Chan's dead body grab a ship's paddle screw shaft during his finale battle.

Other

Standard Tactics: Jonathan will usually fight his opponent head on with hand-to-hand combat | Same as before. | Jonathan will usually fight his opponent head on with hand-to-hand combat while amplifying himself with Hamon | Same as before but if he can't use his hands for combat he will use his sword.

Weaknesses: If he can't breath he will eventually run out of Hamon. If Jonathan were to use Ultimate Deep Pass Overdrive he will rapidly age until he becomes an old man. If A Hamon user's Hamon unable to connect with its target, the target will be unaffected. A way to prevent Hamon from connecting is by freezing the users way of attacking with it before it could reach it's target. Is unable to use his Stand because he died before gaining it. If A Stand is damaged the user will by proxy take damage and if they're damaged, their Stand will take damage. A Stand's energy or power is inversely proportional to their range of operation, the farther away the Stand goes, the weaker, slower, and less precise its movements become. The less air a Stand user has the weaker their Stand becomes. If a Stand user becomes unconscious their Stand will deactivate. Stands that imbue themselves into objects, take the shape of an item, or merge with a user’s body can be seen by normal humans. Stands are tied to the mental abilities of the user, with Stands becoming weaker if the user's mental abilities are weakened. Stands require the spirit to fight in order to be used or else the Stand will harm it's user making them sick with a deadly fever.

Trivia

  • Jonathan Joestar's was created at a Denny's where Hirohiko Araki and his editor Ryosuke Kabashima had their first meeting about the JoJo series.[3] The two decided on the first name and Jonathan with Araki wanted the main protagonist to have matching initials in a similar way to the American filmmaker, Steven Spielberg (S.S). They eventually landed on the named Jonathan Joestar (J.J) thus creating Jonathan's nick name JoJo.[4]
  • Jonathan has been rumored to be named after "Jonathan's Family Restaurant" however both Araki and Kabashima have confirmed this is a myth. Araki had brought up the restaurant in a 2006 interview but later stated this was an accident.[3]
  • Araki wanted Jonathan to exude an aura of strength similar to the protagonist of the manga Karate Master after his martial arts training in the mountains.[5]
  • Jonathan has a similar appearance to Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star although if it was intentional or not has neve been confirmed by Araki. Fist of the North Star was at the very least used a reference martial for some panels of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood.
  • In the 2000s Stardust Crusaders OVA the voice actor for Jonathan Joestar, Jurota Kosugi, voiced Jotaro Kujo in both the 1993 and 2000 parts of the OVA. Along with this Kosugi voices Norisuke Higashikata IV in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven.
  • The 2007 Phantom Blood movie's voice actor for Jonathan, Katsuyuki Konishi, also does Diavolo's Japanese in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.
