~ John after being corrupted during King's Field 3 (JPN)/King's Field 2 (US)

Background

John Alfred Forrester is the main protagonist of King's Field, he is the eldest son of Houser, commander of the Royal Guard. He became interested in the art of sword-fighting and started training, setting out for a neighboring country to study under his father's friend in hopes of surpassing his father.

While training he heard a rumor of his home, the King sent soldiers to search for magical artifacts, but no matter how hard they searched they never found them. The soldiers started to not come back at all, which required them to send another force to investigate, learning that monsters have appeared in the graveyard and attacked soldiers, the King ordered Commander Hauser to lead a large force ot regain control, but they were massacred and almost completely destroyed, with the King sending word across his kingdom and neighboring countries of a bounty for exterminating the monsters within the graveyard.

John, concerned for his father's safety, returns back home to find that Commander Forrester had returned after leading the attack, but then went back to the graveyard to rescue his men. John enlists as a mercenary to go to the graveyard to search for his father.

By King's Field 2 (JP)/King's Field (US), John has become the King of Verdite, though during this time monsters from the Island of Melanant has been attacking and destroying the other two kingdoms of the continent, when they come to Verdite, John attempts to fight off the monsters but finds his Moonlight Sword is missing and he cannot defeat the monsters without them.

Luckily his best friend, Alexander Thornton Regginis, arrives to check up on him and after hearing his story Alexander proclaims that he will go to the Island of Melanat, destroy the monsters, and bring back the sword. Alexander succeeds in his goal and brings the sword back to John, who seals it along with the Dark Slayer sword.

By King's Field 3 (JP)/King's Field 2 (US), five years has passed since the previous events. John was stricken by a lightning storm leaving him sick for over a month, when he recovered he was no longer the same, welcoming the coming of demons that were pillaging and looting the kingdom.

Appearance

We never get any picture or model of John within King's Field.

General Description:

Alfred stands tall and imposing, clad in ornate armor that gives him a noble and commanding presence. His posture is upright, with a powerful build that suggests both physical strength and discipline.

Facial Features: He has long, straight blonde hair that flows past his shoulders and a well-defined, angular face. His eyes are hidden under a heavy brow and helmet ridge, but his mouth is visible and set in a determined expression, emphasizing a stoic demeanor.

Clothing/Outfit: John wears a full set of segmented armor that resembles wood or bark in texture, with greenish-brown hues throughout. The armor is elaborately shaped with broad shoulder guards, a pointed chestplate adorned with a red gem, and a tabard-like front flap. His gauntlets and greaves follow the same organic, textured style, with layered sections providing both mobility and protection.

Special Features:

The red jewel embedded in his chestplate draws attention as a clear focal point, possibly symbolizing rank or a magical property. His sword, gripped in one hand, has a twisted design with crimson highlights, enhancing his threatening appearance.

Personality

  • Ambitious and Driven: John exhibits a strong personal ambition, striving to master the art of swordsmanship with the ultimate goal of surpassing his father. His decision to train in a foreign land under his father's trusted friend reflects a determined spirit and a desire for self-improvement beyond the comforts of home.
  • Loyal and Family-Oriented: Despite his pursuit of martial skill, John remains deeply connected to his family, particularly his father. When rumors of danger arise, his first instinct is to return home and ensure his father's safety, showing a clear sense of duty and familial devotion.
  • Courageous and Resolute: John’s willingness to return to a monster-infested graveyard and enlist as a mercenary speaks to his bravery and steadfastness. He does not hesitate to place himself in perilous situations for the sake of those he cares about, particularly in the face of overwhelming odds.
  • Altruistic and Principled: While his journey is personal, John’s actions are aligned with a greater cause. By taking up arms against the forces threatening his homeland, he demonstrates a willingness to defend others, not just out of loyalty, but out of a deeper sense of responsibility.

Relationships

Houser Forrester

John's father and the commander of the Royal Guard. John deeply admires Houser and aspires to surpass him in swordsmanship. Their bond plays a central role in John’s motivations—after learning that his father led a failed mission into the graveyard and later returned to rescue his men, John returns home and volunteers as a mercenary to find and aid him.

Forrester Wife

Referred to in outside material as Zoela Reinhardt. Wife to Hauser Forrester and mother to John, known only from one NPC reference.

Noel Forrester

John's wife, who is dead by the time of King's Field 3 (JPN)/King's Field 2 (US)[1].

Austin Lyle Forrester

John is Austin's father, who he had to be taken away from at a young age due to his father being corrupted after the storm, turning into an unholy king. When the time comes Austin takes up the mantle to fight and defeat his father, doing so has his father's spirit go within the Moonlight Sword to give it more light as he is finally freed.

Alexander Thornton Regginis

Alexander is noted to be John's best friend, after hearing his story about the missing sword and the monsters near Verdite, Alexander proclaimed that he would go to the Island of Melanat, destroy the monster, and bring back the Moonlight Sword[2]. It is noted that Alexander has been John's best friend since before the time of his father, Houser Forrester's disappearance, since their childhood[3].

Though after John fell sick from a lightning storm, he changed completely, being far more villainous and evil. Alexander tried to come help his friend but was only met with cold stares of hatred.

The King

Although John has no direct personal connection to the King, the monarch’s actions significantly impact his journey. The King's order to search for magical artifacts leads to disaster, prompting him to offer a bounty to eliminate the monsters in the graveyard. This royal decree provides the context for John's mission.

Hauser’s Friend (Unnamed Swordmaster)

John travels to a neighboring country to study swordsmanship under this friend of his father. While not detailed, this mentor figure contributes to John’s growth as a warrior during his training away from home.

The Royal Army and Mercenaries

John's return is prompted by the fate of the Royal Army and his father’s involvement. Though not personally close to the soldiers, their failure and disappearance into the graveyard shape John’s decision to take up the mission himself.

Wilfred Light

A merchant from the noble Light Clan. Previously a supply-master for the suppression force, he chose to remain in the graveyard and open a shop. He is loosely associated with the royal military campaign, though now acts independently. He provides John with equipment to help him on his journey.

Basque Crize

A loyal soldier who served as liaison between the suppression force and the Royal Castle. He returned to the graveyard only to find his unit missing, and now waits in vain for their return. He speaks with John on the top floor for a brief moment.

Ozzy Ranvalgve

Caretaker of the graveyard who studied fencing and admired Commander Hauser Forrester. His respect for the commander suggests a connection to the Royal Guard’s ideals. He speaks to John briefly and tells him how he'd like to help him, but he just sold his graveyard map to a suspicious parent and child a few minutes ago.

Juedds Kross

A priest who fled oppression under King Reinhardt III, now living a secluded life of faith in the graveyard. He entered alongside the bishop and seeks to offer spiritual support to the dead and the living. He requests for John to find his Golden Cross. When John gives him the Gold Cross, he will give him back the Key of the Dead[4].

Nicholas Oarman

Claiming to be a grave digger, he and his son Hans secretly loot the graves. Their presence is deceptive, exploiting the graveyard under false pretenses. Nicholas asks John when he runs into him if he's seen a young person that looks like him, noting that is his son and he ran off after they had an argument.

Gill Baccas

A former thief who poses as a merchant. He entered the graveyard seeking magical artifacts but became stranded. He offers John rare items to buy and is the one who stole Juedds golden cross[5]. He also asks John if he has a Phantom Rod and if he does, he'll buy it for a good price.

Heinz Ruhart

A minstrel forced into the graveyard by royal command to compose an epic about the battle. Though a noncombatant, his presence ties him to the suppression force.

Rally Kelvim

A sage once compared to the legendary Mikael Zews. Disillusioned with the world, he chose to pursue truth within the graveyard, distancing himself from worldly matters.

Erik Blair

A soldier deeply knowledgeable about the graveyard’s layout and history. He entered in search of hidden treasures, with a focus more on discovery than duty. He is informed by Gill that John is looking for the Commander and tells John he'll need to go even lower to find him.

Miria

The dragon’s fairy, a mystical being who conveys the will of the Forest Dragon. Loyal to the Dragon Line, she guides others in the graveyard at key moments. When she meets John she tells him how she has waited for him and to come to her as soon as possible as the king becomes more and more powerful in the deep darkness. She aids in using all of her remaining power to remove the seal and restore light into the Moonlight Sword, begging the protagonist to seal the dark door[6].

Dark Magician's Ethereal Projection

A spectral form of the Dark Magician, unable to be harmed. He serves the former king and uses necromancy and earth magic to threaten intruders.

Watts Virgil

A soldier who served as aide and protector to Hauser Forrester. Loyal to his commander, he represents the surviving loyalty of the Royal Guard.

Dark Magician

The true form of the evil sorcerer who was the right hand of Reinhardt II. Possesses mastery of earth magic and the ability to reanimate the dead.

Forest Dragon

A legendary protector who gifted the Moonlight Sword to the Forrester family[7]. Revered in folklore and served by Miria, this being is central to the ancient balance. They aid in using all of their remaining power to remove the seal and restore light into the Moonlight Sword, giving the protagonist the strongest sword[8].
