Background

Austin Lyle Forester is the main protagonist of King's Field 3 (JPN)/King's Field 2 (US). He is the son of John Alfred Forester and Noel Forester. He is the Prince of Granatyki.

He is relayed the history of Verdite and Valicia by Alexander Thornton Regginis, learning how his father was once a pure King and a hero that became corrupted by an unknown force into an unholy evil being.

He takes up arms to go stop his father and save his kingdom. Once he defeats him one of two events can happen:

In the bad ending after defeating his father, he promises to his Kingdom to become a King that will keep it in peace forever, however he faces the same afflictions as his father right before the ending cuts off, heavily implying Austin follows in his father's footsteps.

In the good ending with Seath defeated, Vallad thanks Austin for what he's done, honoring his bloodline by naming them all Golden Kings that will be known throughout history and reviving Lyn to be his queen.

Appearance

The only time Lyle is shown in King's Field 3 (JPN)/King's Field 2 (US).
  • General Description:

Austin Lyle Forrester is only portrayed from behind during the good ending, his figure framed by a stone arch as he looks out across an open landscape at sunset. His stance and setting evoke a sense of solitude, duty, and reflection.

  • Facial Features:

His face is not visible in the image, emphasizing anonymity and allowing his armor and posture to convey his identity and purpose.

  • Clothing/Outfit:

Austin wears a suit of ornate armor highlighted with gold and black plating. The armor has distinct pauldrons with a jagged design, giving him a formidable silhouette. His boots and gauntlets are similarly styled, reinforcing the image of a knight or warrior of stature.

  • Special Features:

Beside him is a white-hilted sword planted firmly in the ground, its positioning and prominence suggesting its symbolic or personal importance—possibly as a weapon of legacy or burden.

Personality

  • Principled and Just: Austin embodies a strong moral compass, driven by the desire to protect his kingdom and prevent it from falling into darkness. Even when confronted with the horrifying truth of his father’s corruption, he remains steadfast in his duty to do what is right.
  • Courageous and Resolute: He does not hesitate to confront his own father when the fate of Granatyki hangs in the balance. Austin's bravery shines through in his willingness to take up arms against a once-revered hero for the sake of the greater good.
  • Idealistic and Hopeful: Despite the grim circumstances, Austin maintains hope that he can bring peace to his realm. His vow to rule as a just and peaceful king, even in the bad ending, reflects his idealism and desire to break the cycle of corruption.
  • Burdened by Legacy: As the son of a fallen hero-turned-villain, Austin carries the emotional weight of legacy and expectation. His journey is as much about saving the kingdom as it is about proving he can rise above the darkness that once consumed his father.

Relationships

John Alfred Forrester

John is Austin's father, who he had to be taken away from at a young age due to his father being corrupted after the storm, turning into an unholy king. When the time comes Austin takes up the mantle to fight and defeat his father, doing so has his father's spirit go within the Moonlight Sword to give it more light as he is finally freed.

Alexander Thornton Regginis

Alexander was a friend to the Forresters, sending a message to Austin about the truth of the kingdom and how his father fell to darkness, requesting him to take up the mantle and save the kingdom.

He later encounters the ghost of Alexander at the Dragon Spring, he apologizes for what happened to Lyn before asking if she told Austin what she thought of him before immediately cutting himself off.

He proceeds to teach Austin the techniques of swordsmanship that will help him in his final hours against John.

Leon

Leon serves as Austin's teacher and humble servant, relaying the history of Verdite and Valicia to Austin. He makes Lyle the Excellector, a sword that grows as Lyle grows in combat and lets him know what he must do in order to face his father.

The Ichrius' Key is later required to be made by Leon, he leaves a note to Austin telling him how it would be good to talk to him again but there is not enough time.

Noel Forrester

Austin's mother who is dead by the time of King's Field 3 (JPN)/King's Field 2 (US)[1].

Robert Shreve

Austin encounters him in the Forest of Verdite, where he was waiting for Austin to give hmi the Eye of Ichrius but a fairy stole the Eye from him years back. He instead gives Austin the Staff of Varde, to use to recover back the Eye of Ichrius from Varde.

He apologizes for failing Lyle, saying how he can never face the king after this mistake.

Varde

Austin confronts Varde for taking the Eye of Ichrius, but Varde explains that he used a fairy to play a trick on Robert as he needed to speak to Austin before he'd enter the castle.

He explains to Austin that King Alfred wanted him to receive the three Seals of Ichrius and entrusted three people to keep guard over the seals. Once all seals are brought together, the key of Ichrius can be made.

He gives Austin the Eye of Ichrius along with a map that with the power of the fairy of the Woods and the Wind, will guide Austin to the right path.

Jack Leininger

Jack has been looking after Lyle since childhood and has given Lyle valuable lessons in history, ruins, ancient battlegrounds, walls, an citadels.

Marilyn Miller

She is encountered in Quist, where she grieves over her son that died at the garrison and is now bound to a curse. She requests that Austin frees her son's soul and put it to rest.

Lyn Reinhardt

A childhood friend of Austins that used to talk to him often in the castle, she harbours a deep love for him and Lyle once told her that they will be married.

She recognizes Austin when they meet in Ralugo, saying that she knows he goes by Prince Lyle but asks to still call him Austin.

She later journeys to return a ring given to her by Alex to the Dragon Fountain, but she is killed on the way there, Austin finds her ring.

In the best ending, as thanks for defeating Seath, Vallad revives Lyn to be Austin's queen.

Trivia

  • Due to the first game not being released internationally, the naming titles of the American and Japanese versions of King's Field are confusing, thus it goes like this:
    • King's Field (JPN) = Japanese version only
    • King's Field (US)/King's Field 2 (JPN)
    • King's Field 2 (US)/King's Field 3 (JPN)
    • King's Field: The Ancient City (US)/King's Field 4 (JPN)
