Jump to navigationJump to search

The Pikachu Line is comprised of the base form Pichu, the evolution Pikachu and the final evolution Raichu. The most popular of the evolutions is Pikachu, serving as the mascot of the franchise. It serves as the game mascot and first partner Pokémon in Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!, as well as the player's first Pokémon in Pokémon Rumble Blast and Pokémon Rumble World. It has also appeared on the covers of numerous spin-off games.

Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon that first appeared in Generation I. It evolves from Pichu when leveled up with high friendship and evolves into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone. In Alola, Pikachu evolves into Alolan Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone.

Pikachu has fifteen alternate forms that fall into three groups: Cosplay Pikachu, Pikachu in a cap, and Gigantamax Pikachu. An ordinary Pikachu can Gigantamax into Gigantamax Pikachu if it possesses the Gigantamax Factor. An additional form called Pale appears exclusively in Pokémon Pokopia as a character named Peakychu. Another form, the partner Pikachu, appears exclusively in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, though it is not described as a unique form in the Pokédex and is only recognized as a form in the game data. Many other Pikachu variants have also appeared across various media.

Cosplay Pikachu, Pikachu in a cap, the partner Pikachu, and Pikachu with the Gigantamax Factor cannot evolve. The Pikachu (Yellow) received at the start of Pokémon Yellow will refuse to evolve into Raichu unless it is traded and evolved on another save file.

Appearance

General Description: Pikachu is a short, chubby rodent Pokémon covered in yellow fur. It is classified as a quadruped, but it has been known to stand and walk on its hind legs, making it a facultative biped.

Facial Features: A small mouth. Long, pointed ears with black tips. Brown eyes. Each cheek is a red circle that contains a pouch for electricity storage.

Physical Features: Two horizontal brown stripes on its back. Short forearms with five fingers on each paw. Feet with three toes each. A lightning bolt-shaped tail with a patch of brown fur at the base. A female Pikachu has a "V"-shaped notch at the end of its tail, resembling the top of a heart.

Special Features: Its cheek pouches store electric energy. The pouches become electrically charged during the night as it sleeps. If its cheek sacs are very soft and stretchy, it can generate powerful electricity. As seen with Peakychu, overusing its ability to recharge other Pikachu alters its physical structure, causing its fur to become pale.

Alternate Forms/Disguises: This character does not have other widely recognized alternate forms.

Personality

  • Curious: Pikachu is a curious, playful, and intelligent Pokémon, being noted to shock things with electricity if it's never seen it before.
  • Eating Habits: Pikachu primarily eats fruits and roasts Berries with its electricity to make them tender. It can accidentally burn them by underestimating its charge, as it has a tendency to blast new things it finds. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, it is depicted eating and sometimes destroying telephone poles, wires, and other electronic equipment.
  • Tail Behavior: Pikachu raises its tail to monitor its surroundings. It bites people who yank its tail, as it does not like having it pulled. Its tail is sometimes struck by lightning while raised.
  • Social Behavior: Wild Pikachu live in forested areas away from people, with others of their kind in nests. When Pikachu meet, their tails make contact and they exchange electricity through them to greet each other. Pikachu from Alola greet each other by sniffing one another and rubbing their tails together.
  • Reacts to Being Swallowed: Pikachu can get unintentionally swallowed by Cramorant. While startled, it looks for ways to escape.

Status Effects

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of Pokémon

Status Effects
Name Effect Apperances
Burned Reduces one's physical attack and takes damage overtime from the burns. Usually caused by Fire type moves and generally lasts indefinitely unless an external item, ability like shed skin, or move like rest is used. In Generation 1, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. In Generation 2, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/8 of its maximum health. In Generation 8 onward, a burned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of its maximum health. Burn status can be caused by the following moves: Beak Blast (if a Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move during the move's charging phase), Blaze Kick, Blazing Torque, Blue Flare, Burning Bulwark (If contact is made with the user of the move), Burning Jealously (If the Pokémon has increased stats during that turn), Ember, Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Fire Punch, Flame Wheel, Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Fling (if holding a Flame Orb), Heat Wave, Ice Burn, Infernal Parade, Inferno, Matcha Gotcha, Lava Plume, Psycho Shift (If the user of the move is already inflicted with the burn status), Pyro Ball, Sacred Fire, Sandsear Storm, Scald, Scorching Sands, Searing Shot, Secret Power (when used on a volcano), Shadow Fire, Sizzly Slide, Steam Eruption, Tri Attack, and Will-O-Wisp. Most Pokémon Games
Freeze Prevents any action in battle. Usually caused by Ice type moves and generally only lasts for multiple turns, they can be thawed out early if hit by a fire move. The thaw out chance ranges from generation, in Generation 2 the thaw out chance is a 25/256 chance. In Generation 3, the thaw out chance is 20% each turn. In Pokémon Champions, the thaw out chance is 25% each turn. In Generation 1, a frozen Pokémon cannot break out unless hit by a fire-type move that can inflict burn or if an opponent uses the move Haze. Frozen status can be caused by the moves: Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Freezing Glare, Ice Beam, Ice Fang, Ice Punch, Powder Snow, Secret Power (when used in snow or ice weather), Shadow Chill, or Tri Attack. Most Pokémon Games
Frostbite In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the freeze status conditions is replcaaed with frostbite. Frostbite has the Pokémon lose 1/16 of their maximum health every turn and reduces damage dealt by a frostbitten Pokémon's special moves. Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Paralysis Has a chance of preventing any action in battle and lowers speed stat. Usually caused by Electric type skills, it lasts indefinitely without external help, any ability like shed skin, or a move like rest. In later games, attacking a shocked enemy is guaranteed to cause a critical hit. Paralysis in general has a 25% chance of having a Pokémon be unable to attack asides from Pokémon Champions. In Generation 1, paralysis reduces a Pokemon's speed by 75% rounded down due to a stats modification glitch (along with this, using moves like agility would return the dropped speed to normal and double it and the speed drop would stay even after being cured of Paralysis using an item or through Rest). In Generation 2, the irregularities are fixed. In Generations 7 and 8 the paralysis reduces the Pokémon's speed by 50%. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the paralysis is changed to reduce the affected Pokémon's movement speed during battle. In Pokémon Champions, paralyzed Pokémon have a 12.5% chance to be fully paralyzed. The ability to paralyze can be done by the following moves: Body Slam, Bolt Strike, Bounce, Buzzy Buzz, Combat Torque, Dire Claw, Discharge, Dragon Breath, Fling (if holding a Light Ball), Force Palm, Freeze Shock, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Stun Shock, G-Max Volt Crash, Glare, Lick, Nuzzle, Psycho Shift (if user of the attack is already paralyzed), Secret Power (When used on plain terrain, building floors, link battles, Sky Battles, Distortion World, or Electric Terrain is in effect), Shadow Bolt, Spark, Splishy Splash, Stoked Sparksurfer, Stun Spore, Thunder, Thunder Fang, Thunder Punch, Thunder Shock, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Tri Attack, Volt Tackle, Wildbolt Storm, and Zap Cannon. Most Pokémon Games
Poison Depletes health at the end of each turn, often persisting on the field. In Generation 1 a poisoned Pokémon takes damage equal to 1/16 of their maximum health at the end of every turn. A badly poisoned Pokémon still takes 1/16 of their maximum health at first, however the damage increases by 1/16 each time it takes poison damage. In Generation 2, the damage is lowered to 1/8 of its maximum damage and poison damage taken by a badly poisoned Pokémon doesn't interact with other types of recurrent damage. From Generation 1 to 4 all poisoned Pokémon in a trainer's party loses 1 HP for every four steps taken (in FireRed and LeafGreen it's instead every five steps). In Generation 1 to 3, the poison Pokémon will take poison damage until they faint. In Generation 4, a poisoned Pokémon's HP will be brought to 1 and then they will cure themself of poison. In Generation 5 to 8 poisoned Pokémon no longer take poison damage outside of battle. In Legends: Z-A, poisoned Pokémon take damage whil it is outside its Poké Ball. The moves that inflict poison are as follows: Baneful Bunker (If Pokémon makes contact with the user of the move), Barb Barrage, Cross Poison, Dire Claw, Fling (if holding Poison Barb), G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Malodor, G-Max Stun Shock, Gunk Shot, Mortal Spin, Noxious Toruqe, Poison Gas, Poison Jab, Poison Powder, Poison Sting, Poison Tail, Psychco Shift (if the user of the move is poisoned), Secret Power (When used in tall grass), Shell Side Arm, Sludge, Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Smog, Toxic Spikes, Toxic Thread, and twineedle. Most Pokémon Games
Confusion Confused Pokémon become indecisive and may either attack a random enemy or attack themself. In Generations 1-6 it was a 50% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Generation 7 and onwards, it was a 33% chance of the Pokémon hurting itself in confusion. In Legends: Z-A, confusion causes the Pokémon to move sporadically. The following moves cause confusion: Axe Kick, Chatter, Confuse Ray, Confusion, Dizzy Punch, Dynamic Punch, Flatter, G-Max Gold Rush, G-Max Smite, Hurricane, Magical Torque, Psybeam, Rock Climb, Secret Power (only when used on a rocky surface), Shadow Panic, Signal Beam, Strange Steam, Supersonic, Swagger, Sweet Kiss, Teeter Dance, and Water Pulse. Most Pokémon Games
Infatuation Infatuated Pokémon have a chance of not attacking the Pokémon they're infatuated with. There is a 50% chance of the move failing due to infatuation. The following moves cause infatuation: Attract and G-Max Cuddle. Most Pokémon Games
Flinch The Pokémon flinches from an attack, costing them their turn. Only Pokémon with abilites like inner focus will prevent flinching. The following moves cause flinch: Air Slash, Astonish, Bite, Bone Club, Dark Pulse, Double Iron Bash, Dragon Rush, Extrasensory, Fake Out, Fiery Wrath, Fire Fang, Fling (only if King's Rock or or Razor Fang is held), Floaty Fall, Headbutt, Heart Stamp, Hyper Fang, Ice Fang, Icicle Crash, Iron Head, Low Kick, Mountain Gale, Needle Arm, Rock Slide, Rolling Kick, Secret Power (only in caves, rocky terrain, burial grounds, or in space), Sky Attack, Snore (Only if asleep), Steamroller, Stomp, Thunder Fang, Triple Arrows, Twister, Upper Hand, Waterfall, Zen Headbutt, and Zing Zap. Most Pokémon Games
Sleep Prevents any action in battle. The Pokémon is asleep and will normally take some turns to wake up. In Generation 1, sleep lasts for 1-7 turns, with a 1/4 chance to wake up turn 1 and a 1/8 chance to wake up in 2-6 turns. In Generation 2 sleep lasts 2-8 turns, the Pokémon has a 1/4 chance oto wake up in 2 turns or 5 turns and a 1/8 chanc eot wake up in 3 turns, 4 turns, 6 turns, or 7 turns. In Generation 3 sleep lasts 2-5 turns. In Generation 5, sleep now lasts 2-4 turns. In Pokémon Champions, sleep now lasts 2-3 turns. The following moves cause sleep: Dark Void, Dire Claw, G-Max Befuddle, G-Max Snooze, Grass Whistle, Hypnosis, Lovely Kiss, Psycho Shift (if user is asleep), Relic Song, Rest, Secret Power (only in long grass, tall grass, or grassy terrain being in affect), Sing, Sleep Powder, Spore, Wicked Torque, and Yawn. Most Pokémon Games
Drowsy The replacement for the sleep status in the Legends games. It has a chance of the afflicted Pokémon being unable to move along with taking increased damage from attacks. Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Fainted Can no longer participate in battle. In most games, if the all Pokémon faint, the trainer whites out and returns back to their last save with some of their money gone. Can only be recovered with revives, healing at a bed or Pokémon Center, or through specific moves. Most Pokémon Games
Wrap Prevents any action from a unit until the wrap ends. Pokémon Generation 1

It becomes aggressive when it has electricity stored up. At such times, even its Trainer has to take care to avoid being attacked.

Pokémon Ultra Sun
As electricity builds up inside its body, it becomes more aggressive. One theory is that the electricity buildup is actually causing stress.

Pokémon Ultra Moon
Because so many Trainers like the way Pikachu looks, you don't see this Pokémon very often.

Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu & Let's Go Eevee
When electricity builds up inside its body, it becomes feisty. It also glows in the dark.

Pokémon Sword
Its long tail serves as a ground to protect itself from its own high-voltage power.

It loves pancakes prepared with a secret Alolan recipe. Some wonder whether that recipe holds the key to this Pokémon's evolution.

Pokémon Sword
It's believed that the weather, climate, and food of the Alola region all play a part in causing Pikachu to evolve into this form of Raichu.

Pokémon Shield
This Pokémon rides on its tail while it uses its psychic powers to levitate. It attacks with star-shaped thunderbolts.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A
It uses psychokinesis to control electricity. It hops aboard its own tail, using psychic power to lift the tail and move about while riding it.

It fires bolts of electricity from the tip of its tail and from the spiky tufts of fur growing out of its temples. This electricity forms the letter Y.

Trivia

Pikachu

  • Pikachu and its evolved form share their category with Rattata, Raticate, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Pawmi, and Pawmo. They are all known as the Mouse Pokémon. However, Rattata and Raticate were originally called the Rat Pokémon prior to Generation III.
  • Pikachu is the 25th Pokémon in both the National Pokédex and the Alola Pokédex in Sun and Moon.
  • Pikachu is the only core series first partner Pokémon that does not have a 7:1 gender ratio.
  • According to A Sneak Peek at Pokémon, Pikachu can deliver a constant current of 1000 amperes.
  • Pikachu is the only Pokémon that serves as the player's first Pokémon in the core series games that has a pre-evolved form. However, Pichu does not exist in either game in which it fills this role.
  • The Pikachu family is the only evolutionary family to have access to Mega Evolution, exclusive Z-Moves, and Gigantamax.
  • Pikachu is the only not fully evolved Pokémon whose base stats increased in Generation VI, as well as the only Pokémon to receive more than one stat increase: Defense and Special Defense.
  • Pikachu has the most event-exclusive moves available to it.
  • In Generation VIII onward, Pikachu is capable of learning Surf via TM, when it was previously only obtainable through special means.
  • Pikachu is the only Pokémon with two exclusive Z-Moves.
  • Pikachu and Eevee are the only non-fully evolved Pokémon with exclusive Z-Moves.
  • On Pokémon.com, the 1999 version of Pikachu's Pokédex entry incorrectly implied that Pikachu evolved by level instead of the Thunder Stone.
  • Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 are the only core series games in which Pikachu cannot be obtained without transporting or through an event.
  • When starting a new game in Yellow, Pikachu's front sprite appears with a slightly different color palette than usual when introduced by Professor Oak.
  • In Yellow and from Generation VI to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Pikachu uses its animated series cry, voiced by Ikue Otani. Before Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, it was the only Pokémon to do so in the core series games.
  • In the Japanese Pokémon Stadium, Pikachu is the only usable Pokémon that is not fully evolved.
  • Pikachu is the only Pokémon that can be caught in all three pinball titles.
  • Pikachu was one of the first Pokémon to be featured on a Pokémon TCG card released in Japan, alongside Jigglypuff.
  • Pikachu is currently represented in the Trading Card Game by more cards than any other Pokémon.
  • Veronica Taylor and Sarah Natochenny, both of whom voiced Ash in the English dub of the animated series, have said that Pikachu is their favorite Pokémon.
  • In 2001 and 2002, the country of Niue issued commemorative Pokémon silver coins featuring Pikachu.
  • The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has included four Pokémon balloon designs featuring Pikachu, from 2001 to present.
  • Pikachu has served as the inspiration for the naming of several scientific discoveries, including the protein pikachurin, the springtail species Dicranocentrus pikachu, the spider species Epicratinus pikachu and Alistra pikachu, and the beetle species Hiperantha pikachu.
  • On December 11, 2023, Google revealed that Pikachu was the most searched Pokémon in the platform's 25 years of history.
  • Pikachu was designed by Atsuko Nishida.
  • Gigantamax Pikachu was designed by James Turner.
  • Pikachu's initial prototype resembled a daifuku, a round dessert, with ears. Its design basis changed to a squirrel to make it cuter overall, although the black tips on its ears are remnants of the initial concept.
  • Pikachu had a short, stout design during the initial release of Red and Green, but its design was altered for the animated series and subsequent entries of the games, becoming slightly taller and skinnier.
  • Pikachu also originally had a second-stage Evolution named Gorochu, which would have had two horns and fangs. Sugimori stated that while there was nothing wrong with its appearance, it was omitted from Red and Green as the staff found the game balance better without it.
  • Pikachu was originally a daifuku-like creature with ears sticking out. Its black ear tips are remnants of this original concept.
  • Nishida named Pikachu without giving it much thought, and while it wasn't originally intended to be based on a mouse, Game Freak CEO Satoshi Tajiri made the decision to base it on such. During the process of making Pikachu cuter, Nishida added cheek pouches for it to store electricity in, inspired by squirrels.
  • Pikachu's Gigantamax form is a reference to its earlier, more rotund design from Generations I and II.

Pichu

  • Pichu has the lowest base stat total of all Electric-type Pokémon.
    • Pichu also has the lowest base HP and Defense stats of all Electric-type Pokémon.
  • The Pikachu-colored Pichu was the first Pokémon to be given out over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection outside of Japan.
  • Together with Magikarp, Rattata, Ninjask, Goldeen, and Seedot, Pichu is the easiest Pokémon to catch in Pokémon Ranger, with only one loop necessary.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Yellow was the one who gave Pichu its species name, creating it as a combination of the name of Pibu's parents, Pika and Chuchu.
  • Unique to its playstyle in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Ultimate, Pichu receives self-inflicted damage when performing moves that utilize electricity.
  • Pichu is game director Junichi Masuda's favorite Pokémon from Generation II.
  • Pichu was designed by Ken Sugimori.
  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo, Pichu appears to be based on the Pokémon known as Pichū. It resembled a smaller Pikachu with rounder ears and body.
  • In 2002, the country of Niue issued a $10 commemorative Pokémon silver coin featuring Pichu.
  • Pichu was featured as an air-pump toy with moving ears in the 2001 McDonald's promotional Pokémon toys.
  • Pichu was featured in the Poké Ball Evolution Surprise set in the Jollibee Pokémon toys.
  • Pichu seems to draw inspiration from squirrels and various other rodents. According to Junichi Masuda, Ken Sugimori came up with the idea for Pichu when Game Freak staff were trying to figure out a Pokémon to be the "next" Pikachu. Its Shiny variation is inspired by Pikachu's standard coloration.

Raichu

  • Raichu and its pre-evolved form both share their category with Rattata, Raticate, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Pawmi, and Pawmo. They are all known as the Mouse Pokémon.
  • Raichu is the 26th Pokémon in both the National Pokédex and the Alola Pokédex in Sun and Moon.
  • Alolan Raichu is:
    • the only Pokémon with its type combination.
    • the first dual-type electric rodent without any immunities.
    • the only regional form of a Pokémon with an exclusive Z-Move, Stoked Sparksurfer.
      • along with Pikachu, the only electric rodent with an exclusive Z-Move.
    • the only Alolan form of a Pokémon available in Scarlet and Violet, outside of Poké Portal News mass outbreaks, that can only be obtained by transferring it from other games.
    • the only Pokémon whose Alolan form is obtainable in Legends: Z-A without the Mega Dimension DLC.
  • Raichu is:
    • along with Slowbro, the only Pokémon to have both a Mega Evolution and a regional form, as well as the only electric rodent with either.
    • the first Pokémon to be revealed to have two Mega Evolutions since X and Y.
    • the first Pokémon whose Mega Evolutions were revealed in promotional trailers for the Mega Dimension DLC of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
    • the last Pokémon whose Mega Evolutions were introduced before the aforementioned game's release, along with the Mega-Evolved forms of the fully evolved Kalos first partner Pokémon.
  • The Raichu family is the only evolutionary line to have access to Mega Evolution, exclusive Z-Moves, and Gigantamax.
  • Although Pikachu is the first partner Pokémon of Yellow, it is not possible to directly make it evolve into Raichu in the game, so it must be traded from Red and Blue. Pikachu's refusal to evolve is a reference to Ash's Pikachu in the animated series.
  • Raichu is the most common Pokémon found amongst rivals, being used by five of them.
  • Raichu's FireRed and Sun Pokédex entries discuss Raichu's electricity being able to knock out an Indian elephant. In Legends: Arceus, this is changed to Copperajah, which is based on the Indian elephant.
  • Several Pokédex entries say Raichu can discharge up to 100,000 volts. However, its Stadium entry instead says it can discharge up to 10,000 volts. This is likely a translation error due to the way numbers are read in Japanese.
  • In Red and Blue, there is a Scientist at the Pokémon Lab in Cinnabar Island who will trade a Raichu for an Electrode. If the player talks to him after the trade, he will mention that the Raichu evolved, which is not possible as it is already fully evolved.
  • At launch, Raichu was the only Pokémon in Pokémon Champions capable of Mega Evolution whose Mega-Evolved forms were absent in the base game. Both of Raichu's Mega-Evolved forms were added in version 1.1.0 on June 17th, 2026.
  • Raichu, from the Team Rocket set, was the first Pokémon to be featured on a Secret card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
  • Raichu and Alolan Raichu were designed by Atsuko Nishida. The concept of Alolan Raichu came from Masafumi Nukita.
  • Raichu originally had an evolved form named Gorochu, which would have had two horns and fangs. Ken Sugimori stated that while there was nothing wrong with its appearance, it was omitted from Red and Green as the staff found the game balance better without it.
  • Raichu's legs and long tail resemble those of a jerboa or kangaroo rat.
  • Alolan Raichu may be based on the concept of Surfing Pikachu and the sport of surfing itself, which originated in and is the state sport of Hawaii, the inspiration for the Alola region, as well as the hodad concept of being a fake surfer. Its design and Psychic type may have been influenced by Puka, a surfing Pikachu in the animated series which had psychic powers and blue eyes. According to Ken Sugimori, he asked Atsuko Nishida to design Alolan Raichu since she had worked on the original Raichu design. Nishida designed Alolan Raichu with the motif of bread. The in-game lore of people believing that its Evolution is induced by eating pancakes was added afterward to play up the concept.
  • Both Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y resemble their assigned letters, and also take elements from Pikachu's design. Mega Raichu X takes after regular Raichu, with its color scheme and tail shape inspired by Pikachu while retaining the same body shape. Mega Raichu Y appears to be the inverse. Mega Raichu X's Shiny coloration resembles that of regular Raichu, whereas Mega Raichu Y's is instead similar to Pikachu's. They could also be inspired by Gorochu, which was described as having fangs and two horns. Mega Raichu Y may also be inspired by the jackalope.

Junichi Masuda: We created Platinum with a new method of determining the game's direction that was based on the image of one Pokémon - Giratina. When I imagined Giratina, the idea of a "reversed world" came to my mind. I thought of concepts such as "E=mc2" and matter and antimatter. There is no top or bottom, no left or right. We increased the number of developers for Diamond and Pearl, so we wanted to clarify the game concepts for the team before we started the project Its better to hammer out the overall vision of the game first, and then all the team members will work towards that vision by throwing out ideas. The concept of "ultimate" was what we started out with for this title."
