Fear not, my beloved Noelle!!
This valiant warrior of brave intelligence
Will be your knight in glow in the dark armor!

~ Berdly when summoned by Queen

Background

Berdly is a minor character in Chapter 1 of Deltarune and the secondary antagonist of Chapter 2, as one of Kris's classmates and early rivals. He is the self-proclaimed "Number 1" student in school and Noelle's study partner.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Berdly's story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Chapter 1
When Kris first enters the classroom, Berdly can be seen at his desk along with the other students. If spoken to, he chastises Kris for being late and says he is already partnered with the second smartest student, Noelle, implying that he is the smartest. When Noelle asks Alphys for permission to let Kris join them and make a group of three, Berdly vehemently objects, believing that Kris would prevent them from getting an A. Before the matter can be settled, Susie enters the room and Kris is partnered with her instead.

After school, Berdly works as a volunteer assistant at the Librarby. If spoken to there, he congratulates Kris on surviving Susie, sarcastically offering a discount on their "family debt" of 2583 days of overdue fines for How to Draw Dragons. If addressed after Kris visits the Hospital, Kris apparently requests him to go by the hospital window, presumably so that Noelle's dad can throw something at him. Berdly declines the offer.

Chapter 2
At some point between class and Kris leaving the school's Dark World, Berdly entered the Librarby's dark world. He later joined Queen against her will.

At the end of the Cyber Field, Kris, Ralsei, and Susie fight Berdly in bumper cars, resulting in Berdly's coaster exploding and him falling of the rails.

Later in Cyber City, the Queen hides from Berdly above Noelle, and he makes a truce with Kris until they find their respective teams. Later in the city, he finds Kris again in the Annoying Mouse Puzzle Room 3 while Noelle is on the platform of the puzzle. He continues to talk to Kris, completely oblivious to the fact that Noelle is right next to him. Just two rooms afterwards, he spots Kris and Noelle together, and immediately jumps to the conclusion that Kris has taken Noelle captive and proceeds to battle them.

Right before the Lightners enter the Mansion, Queen stops them and tries to take Noelle captive, threatening to give Berdly "A Ride In The Acid River" if she refuses. After Kris escapes their room, Berdly appears and decides to join their team; however, he does not help at all. In the dark lamp puzzles, he attempts to solve the puzzles but is repeatedly upset when Kris continues to find the answer first. After the third room, he tells Kris, Susie, and Lancer his backstory. He shares with the group that he was always forgotten until the last question of the spelling bee he and Noelle participated in. He reveals that he won because Noelle couldn't speak, and from then on, he pretended to be the smart guy to get more attention, and that he only got good grades because Noelle helped him do his homework. They forgive him and tell him it's okay to make mistakes, which he misinterprets as meaning he should be dumb more. Regardless, he changes for the better in the latter part of the story.

Snowgrave route
If the player has started the Weird Route during Chapter 2, Berdly's encounter with Kris and Noelle after Annoying Mouse Puzzle Room 3 goes much differently. After noticing that Noelle is acting unusual and expressing genuine concern for how Kris is treating her, Berdly attacks Kris. The player convinces Noelle to use the SnowGrave spell on Berdly, which immediately encases him in a large prism of ice. He does not appear for the remainder of the adventure in the Dark World.

After the dark fountain is sealed and the computer lab is returned to normal, Kris, Susie, Noelle, and Berdly appear at one of the tables, but Berdly appears to be unconscious. Noelle assumes that he fell asleep during their studying and leaves him behind. Interacting with Berdly displays the text "(He doesn't seem to be awake.)" When Kris leaves the computer lab, Berdly does not appear with them, and he cannot be found anywhere else in town that day.

Berdly's condition and fate at the end of this route are currently unknown. However, the SnowGrave spell is noted as "fatal" during battle, and examining the computer lab's closet on any route before leaving reveals that "a large person could easily fit inside", implying that his body could be stored there. Additionally, at the hospital, the sliding bead toy now has a blue bead torn off from the tracks, suggesting that Berdly is dead.

Powers and Techniques

Incoporeal Aspects (A monster's physiology is mostly composed of magic, noting that humans have a "physical form"[2], along with having their SOUL directly attuned to their body[3]), Magic (All monsters are made of magic, being able to do things like make "bullet-patter cards" with their magic[4]), Flight (Was shown on several occasions to be able to fly in the air not unlike that of a regular bird), Sheer Will, Darkness Manipulation, Creation, & Subjective Reality (As a Lightner, Berdly can create a Dark Fountain by coursing his will through a blade. Dark Fountains are made from darkness itself and can even bring objects to life such as a virtual world from spare wires and computer parts. Kris themselves later created their own dark world), Battlefield Removal (Application Based; By creating a Dark Fountain, it can pull anyone within the room of the dark fountain to the Dark World).

All previous abilities plus, Superhuman Physical Characteristics, , Acrobatics (Should be comparable to Susie who is capable of performing flips and sticking a landing from a several-meter fall), Non-Standard Interaction & Metaphysics Manipulation (Soul Manipulation and Essence Manipulation; Can fight and interact with monsters such as Susie and Noelle, whose bodies are made of magic that is attuned to their SOUL. The SOUL is the culmination of one’s very being), Hammerspace (Can store twelve items in his inventory at once and can hold an indefinite amount in his STORAGE), Penetration Damage (Metaphysical Penetration) & Weapon Mastery (Halberd Usage; Berdly uses a Halberd dubbed the “Halbird” that also helps channel his magic into offensive projectiles), Energy Manipulation & Summoning (Can manifest his Halbird out of raw energy into a physical form for combative use), Extended Blade Range & Distance Negation (Attacks in Deltarune can hit targets even when not appearing to make physical contact), Air Manipulation & Minor Weather Manipulation (Berdly can create tornados that target and follow their targets), Organic Manipulation & Curtain Fire (Berdly's Chirashi attack creates dozens of paper tests that target the opponent and relentlessly overwhelm them), Personal Domain and Battlefield Removal (When one encounters a monster they get into a fight, a FIGHT is an encounter in a monster's personal domain allowing them to fight humans, this has various rules such as turn-based combat), Social Influencing & Subjective Reality (By using the ACT Command, Kris Dreemurr can perform various actions to pacify their opponent. Susie was able to teach herself and Ralsei their own ACT command to a lesser degree and Noelle also seemingly knows how to ACT which should indicate that Berdly can as well), Accelerated Development (Battle; Physical Stats; Can get stronger by defeating more enemies in battle at the cost of losing their alliance), Passive Resurrection (Self-Resurrection; Resurrection from Exhaustion; Berdly can revive after falling in battle with enough time), Fusionism (Fused a bunch of scrap junk together to create the Thrash Machine to challenge GIGA Queen).

Can perform various abilities with the ACT command. Can cast hypnosis alongside others to put tougher foes asleep. Performing Pirouette can also make an opponent slightly tired each time it's used), Air Manipulation (Can cast a gust of wind powerful enough to blow away sentient dust bunnies), Statistics Amplification (Defense; The Pirouette ACT can occasionally boost the party's defense in battle. Offense; Pirouette can potentially boost an enemy's attack power in battle), Summoning (Pirouette can occasionally summon a yellow bird which indicates that no additional effects have occurred), Statistics Reduction & Empathic Manipulation (Defense; Pirouette has a chance to reduce the opponent's defense stat when used by putting them at ease), Power Modification (Pirouette has a chance of reducing the invulnerability frames by sixty percent in battle. Pirouette can occasionally swap the whole party's health around and give a boost to other members while crippling others), Healing (Pirouette can occasionally heal a single ally during battle, or even the whole party), Minor Telekinesis (Can use the JiggleJiggle ACT to wiggle their body and thereby force other objects to loosen like wires), Cloth Manipulation & Organic Manipulation (Can conjure a nurse's outfit and medication with the TakeCare ACT. Can conjure dog ears to wear when using the Order ACT), Broadway Force (Can encourage others to dance alongside him and thereby pacify them), Information Manipulation (Can block ads created by a Poppup with the Block ACT skill), Sealing (Physical; Can summon a small cage to trap foes with, or even several dozen enemies all at once).

Healing (Dark Candy[5], Broken Cake[6], Top Cake[7], Spin Cake[8], Darkburger[9], Choco Diamond[10], Hearts Donut[11], Clubs Sandwich[12], Lancer Cookie[13], RouxlsRoux[14], Light Candy[15], CD Bagel[16], Double-Dark Burger[17], Tea[18], Butler Juice[19], and Spaghetti Code heals the user in battle[20]), Resurrection (Resurrection on Singular Targets; Resurrection from Exhaustion & Resurrection of the Deceased; The Revive Mint can resurrect a fallen ally from incapacitation and death[21]), Restoration (Tension Bit can restore the party's tension gauge during battle[22]).
Statistics Amplification (Defense; The White Ribbon[23], Amber Card[24], Dice Brace[25], Iron Shackle[26], Jevilstail[27], Silver Card[28], Glow Wrist[29], Mannequin[30], Pink Ribbon[31], Royal Pin[32], B.ShotBowtie[33], Chain Mail[34], Frayed Bowtie[35], Dealmaker[36], Twin Ribbon[37], Spike Band[38], and Tension Bow all provide an increase to the defense stat[39]. Notable Techniques

  • Tornado 1: Berdly summons a wall of four tornadoes that fly to the left one by one. This attack goes unused in the Weird Route.
  • Tornado 2: Berdly summons four tornadoes that fly towards the center. This attack goes unused in the first encounter.
  • Chirashi: Berdly shoots papers with "A+" written on them. In the weird route, Berdly shoots more papers per wave, with reduced time between waves.
  • Spear Blast: Berdly shoots a trail of projectiles in a curvy line, telegraphed by a thin red line. The trail stays for a moment, before releasing small projectiles that point in the direction they will fly. In the weird route, the number of projectiles are doubled and this attack is also quicker than usual.

Other

Standard Tactics: Berdly will shoot his opponents with a variety of projectiles, from tornadoes to spears.

Weaknesses: All monsters are weak to an attack with killing intent behind it and if a monster doesn't want to fight, they are weakened greatly, Berdly is also extremely overconfident.

Note

  • It's revealed as of Chapter 2 that the Dark World grants people new powers and abilities, thus they do not translate over to the real world.
