Background
Broly is the main antagonist of the Broly Triple Threat trio of Dragon Ball Z films. Born the Legendary Super Saiyan, with a power level far beyond any child his age, he was sent to be killed alongside his father, Paragus. After escaping, Broly and Paragus grew up in solitude, later wreaking havoc over the universe. Broly was eventually confronted by Son Goku, who became the bane of his existence for years to come.
This dropdown contains the synopsis of Broly’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise! |
---|
Broly is an unbelievably powerful Saiyan warrior, who was born in Age 737 as the first Legendary Super Saiyan for 1000 years. Much to the surprise of the Saiyan people, Broly was born with a power level of ten thousand, which rivalled even that of King Vegeta, the ruler of the Saiyans. Although Broly’s father, Paragus, insisted that Broly would be extremely useful to the Saiyan people, King Vegeta was jealous and disgusted, insisting that Broly be executed. Paragus could say nothing to save himself, was blasted away, seemingly killed, and thrown into a trench. Meanwhile, the infant Broly lay in his crib, unaware of the assassination attempt about to occur. At the same time, in the crib next to his, a young Saiyan boy named Kakarot was crying, disturbing Broly’s sleep. As Kakarot cried, the assassins walked into the room with a knife, and fatally wounded the infant Broly. After this event, Broly was thrown into the same trench as his barely-alive father. Unbeknownst to everyone, however, Broly survived, and attributed Kakarot’s cries to the traumatic attempt on his life. Paragus turned over, and was surprised to see that his son was clinging to life. At the same time as this, a horrible experience was occurring to all the Saiyans; the emperor, Frieza, was enacting his genocide of the Saiyan people by destroying their planet. As Frieza’s Supernova collided with the planet, Paragus knew that he and Broly were certainly done for. However, in the final moments before destruction, Broly encased Paragus within a protective barrier and survived the explosion. Miraculously, Paragus and Broly went from Saiyans left for dead, to some of the only Saiyans still alive. The two would go on to travel through space, looking for a place to settle down. Unfortunately, as Paragus expected, Broly’s power would only grow as he got older, and his sinister personality developed alongside it. Scared for his own life, while a now-adult Broly was asleep, Paragus snuck into his room and forced a golden crown upon his head, which he would use to limit Broly’s power to a manageable level. With this power now in his hands, Paragus treated Broly almost as an attack dog, who he used to do his bidding. In particular, one day in Age 767, the restrained Broly travelled to the South Galaxy, and used his body to tear the entire galaxy apart. From far far off, King Kai sensed this, and recruited Kakarot, now named Son Goku, to investigate. In reality, this was part of Paragus’s elaborate plot against the Saiyan royalty. Paragus would then find the location of the son of King Vegeta, Prince Vegeta, who now resided on Earth. Paragus took Broly and came to Earth, finding Vegeta and explaining that he had secured a New Planet Vegeta for him to rule. In reality, this planet was once fated to be destroyed by the Comet Camori, which Paragus hoped would kill Vegeta and secure his revenge. Unfortunately for Paragus, his plans took a wild turn when Goku appeared on New Planet Vegeta to investigate the destruction of the South Galaxy. Upon seeing “Kakarot,” who he attributed to his trauma, Broly fell into an uncontrollable rage that even overpowered his crown. Because of this, he was able to transform into the Legendary Super Saiyan. Broly fought against the Z Fighters and proved that none of them stood a chance against him. Broly planned on finally killing Goku once and for all, until the Z Fighters infused Goku with their combined power. Broly was unable to overpower Goku after this, and was delivered a fatal wound to the chest. With a gaping hole in his chest, Broly’s Ki became too much for him to handle, and he was vaporized within it. Goku and his friends believed that Broly was finally dead once and for all, and returned back to Earth. However, as the Comet Camori came closer and closer towards New Planet Vegeta, the specks of Ki that remained of Broly reformed, and brought the heavily wounded Saiyan back to himself. Desperate to escape the Comet, as he knew his weakened body would surely die if it hit, Broly rushed to his space pod and set course for Earth. When he finally landed in a crater, he powered down to his base state, and fell unconscious. For the next seven years, Broly would lay dormant encased in ice. Once those seven years were up, Broly was awoken by a curious sound; crying, from someone who sounded particularly like Kakarot. With his rage once against flaring up, Broly burst through the ice stronger than ever and began terrorizing the land. He quickly met resistance, however, from Goku’s sons; Goten and Gohan, who fought him bitterly in defence of the planet. It finally came to an energy struggle, with Gohan and Goten’s Kamehameha Waves being the only thing that stood between Broly’s destruction of the planet. Broly seemed to be winning, until the spirit of Goku appeared, and landed his strength. Once again overpowered, Broly was consumed by the Family Kamehameha and launched far off into space, where his body quickly gave out; a hole burst into his chest, and he collided with the sun. Broly was completely dead, and the Earth would be forever free from his wrath. |
General Information
Name: Broly
Origin: Dragon Ball Z Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan
Sex: Male
Age: 37 years old
Classification: Alien, Super Saiyan, Legendary Super Saiyan
Species: Saiyan
Occupation: None
Status: Deceased (Has been killed both times by both Son Goku and Son Gohan)
Alignment: Chaotic Evil (Broly relishes in chaos and destruction, calling himself a devil because of his ruthlessness. He gets extreme pleasure out of destroying things needlessly, such as when he destroyed an entire species' home planet simply because he enjoyed seeing them despair. He often plays around in combat so that he can cause as much pain as possible, stating himself that he wants his enemies to suffer)
Codex Statistics
Key: The Legendary Super Saiyan | Second Coming
Grade: B | B
Tier: At least 6-C, Far Higher with Strongest Charged Blast | At least 6-C, Far Higher with Strongest Charged Blast
Cardinality: Finite
Dimensionality: 3-D
Attack Potency: At least Island level (Broly was so powerful that it took the combined power of massively weakened Cell-Saga Son Goku, Son Gohan, Future Trunks, Vegeta, and Piccolo to destroy him; some of whom are superior to Semi-Perfect Cell, who destroyed several islands with several blast), Far Higher with Strongest Charged Blast (Superior to First Form Frieza, who destroyed Planet Vegeta, which as the explosion wasn't instantaneous, means Frieza detonated the core getting these results) | At least Island level (With his restrictors fully gone, Broly was able to reach his maximum powered states. Recovering from near death should’ve greatly increased his power, due to the Saiyan’s ability to grow far stronger after a near-death experience. He easily overpowered Super Saiyan Gohan’s Kamehameha, who by this point scales to Dabura who was stated that his maximum power was likely equal to Super Perfect Cell, possibly even far stronger, and was shown to toy with a weaker Super Saiyan Gohan; being comparable to Super Perfect Cell would make him on par with Cell’s Kamehameha, which was going to destroy the solar system, which was going to be done through the process of destroying the sun)
Durability: At least Island level, Higher with Guard Up (Ki allows a fighter to extend beyond their bodies limits, allowing them to even block attacks that would otherwise kill them from raising their guard) | At least Island level (Should be more durable than before, due to recovering from near-death), Higher with Guard Up
Striking Strength: At least Island Class | At least Island Class
Lifting Strength: Class 25 (Superior to Android Saga Super Saiyan Vegeta, who trained in 300 times gravity, where Vegeta is naturally 56 kg, making him 16,800 kg or 16.8 tons) | Class 25
Travel Speed: Massively Hypersonic+ (Superior to Super Saiyan Son Goku on Namek, who previously in his base form traveled from Frieza's ship over to Vegeta in this timeframe) | Massively Hypersonic+
Attack Speed: Massively Hypersonic+ | Massively Hypersonic+
Reaction Speed: Massively Hypersonic+ (Far beyond 22nd Budokai Son Goku, who could dodge a mouth blast from Tambourine, which he used to tag the flying nimbus where even post King Kai training Goku used the flying nimbus to make it to the saiyans implying it is at least comparable to his flight speed by then, with Goku being capable of traveling over a million of kilometers in two days which results in these speeds) | Massively Hypersonic+
Range: Standard Melee, Interstellar with Ki Attacks (Ki attacks can reach out of the planet and to other planets. All ki attacks should be comparable to Goku's kamehameha, which reached all the way to the sun)
Intelligence: Genius Intelligence (Although Broly appears to value brawn over brains in every instance, he is a combative genius. He was able to outmaneuver Goku, Piccolo, and Vegeta, who all each have decades of training on him. He could also tell when his father was trying to betray him) | Above Average (Broly’s smarts have decreased dramatically due to his previous defeat, rendering him unable to say anything but “Kakarot.” He has begun believing that Goten is Goku despite having fought Goku previously, and was also briefly toyed with by Goten and Trunks in combat; though he eventually defeated them)
Powers and Techniques
Limited Resistance to Durability Negation (Ki users can focus their energy to localize an object to a specific spot to stop them from attempting to destroy their organs/insides), Resistance to Poison Manipulation (Can resist poisons through Forcefield Creation[11])
Resistance to Radiation Manipulation (Saiyans are able to absorb up to 17 million zeno units per second of green-spectrum radiation in order to trigger the Great Ape transformation)
All previous powers and abilities to a greater extent, Electricity Manipulation (Should be above ultra Super Saiyan which passively generates a bio-electric aura that hits anyone near)
Equipment
- Attack Ball: This round Saiyan space pod only has room for one person, which Broly desperately used to get him from New Planet Vegeta to Earth before the planet exploded. Traces of blood were left on the ship and used to clone him.
- Broly’s Crown: A golden crown that Broly had forced onto his head by Paragus. Paragus can activate this crown through a ring that he carries around, which will inflict pain upon Broly and heavily restrict his powers.
Notable Techniques
- Flight: With a mastery of Ki control, Broly is able to fly at incredibly high speeds.
- Ki Blast: Using Ki, Broly can concentrate it into a ball that he uses as a projectile attack.
- Ki Sense: Broly is able to detect lifeforms and power levels from far off.
- Powered Shell: Broly encases himself in a large barrier of green ki, which protects him from many different forms of attack.
- Eraser Cannon: First, Broly charges a green light energy from around his body and gathers it into his palm to form a bright-green energy sphere. Next, he waves his hand forward and fires the attack at the opponent, inflicting a large amount of damage. In some cases, he also fires it from his chest.
- Double Eraser Cannon: First, Broly charges two Eraser Cannons, one in each of his hands. Then, he swings his hands forward as he fires the energy spheres one by one at the opponent, inflicting a high amount of damage. It is also implied in a flashback that this attack was potent enough to completely obliterate a planet.
- Trap Shooter: The user draws their right hand back and charges a green or yellow energy sphere. Then, they wave their hand forward and fire several, compact, powerful energy sphere bullets that follow the opponent's movements, inflicting considerable damage.
- Eraser Shot Volley: First, Broly bends over slightly and charges an Eraser Cannon in his right hand. Then, he fires the attack and follows up by firing a barrage of Eraser Cannons from both hands at the opponent, inflicting a huge amount of damage.
- Blaster Meteor: First, the user forms an Energy Shield around his body. Then, he brings his hands apart to each side and releases many powerful energy blasts that home in on the target, inflicting a massive amount of damage.
- Eraser Blow: Broly flies past the opponent with an Eraser Cannon in his hand that he brings near the opponent's stomach. He then throws his hand with the Eraser Cannon forward and, at point blank range, blasts the opponent away. The screen turns dark after the attack for dramatic effect.
- Omega Blaster: Broly launches a lime green energy sphere that changes into an enormous energy bomb of devastating power, while saying "Struggle all you want, in the end you still die!" Not only can he control the size of this attack, but he can also power it up by launching ki blasts into it to push it forward, making it even more powerful and destructive enough to destroy the whole planet. However, this also gives indication to the technique's weakness. Without a steady supply of ki blasts, the Omega Blaster will shrink and weaken in power.
- Gigantic Eraser: A powered down variant of the Omega Blaster.
- Planet Geyser: When the energy blast hits the ground, it explodes and creates a giant geyser-like blast of energy that blasts the opponent up in the air, inflicting massive damage and capable of causing massive collateral damage to the surrounding area.
- Blaster Meteor: Broly forms a ki shield around him, and then spontaneously releases ki blasts from his hands that home-in on opponents.
- Gigantic Spike: Broly grabs the opponent by the face, and flies forwards to slam their head into a nearby surface.
- Powered Shell: A technique used to generate an energy shield around the user to protect them from attacks. This ability was capable of withstanding lava and even planetary destruction, the former being demonstrated by his survival of Gohan's trap against him, and the latter was confirmed with his surviving Planet Vegeta's destruction and implied by Broly's comment about how Paragus was naive to think he would have died from Comet Camori colliding with New Planet Vegeta shortly after murdering him. It apparently had limits, such as extremely powerful attacks, as evidenced by how it was unable to block the Family Kamehameha.
- Super Saiyan A-Type: In several flashbacks in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly is shown using his ordinary uncontrolled Super Saiyan form. Due to the lighting, the hair at times appeared pink or purple. Due to the mind control crown forced upon him by his father Paragus, Broly possess a weakened state of Super Saiyan. It was also heavily implied that this was the form Broly was in when he significantly damaged Shamo and presumably the rest of the South Area upon being adorned with the crown at Paragus' command. During Broly's first psychotic outburst wherein he pursues Goku, he transforms into a Super Saiyan, although his appearance in the form differs as a result of his crown restraint. In this mind-controlled Super Saiyan form, Broly's muscles swell slightly, his hair assumes a neon blue hue with purple tint (completely purple if in a dark environment, such as his first fight with Goku), and his skin pigment is dulled, additionally, he does not gain as much power as he would in his true Super Saiyan form - this form is called Super Saiyan (A type).
- Super Saiyan C-Type: In Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, just before transforming into the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly becomes a green haired Super Saiyan (C type). In Broly - Second Coming, Broly's regular yellow haired Super Saiyan transformation makes its full onscreen debut. Unlike other Saiyans however, Broly's hair in this form appears as a dull yellow with a slight green tint. This form is referred to as Super Saiyan (C type).
- Legendary Super Saiyan: Broly awakened this form as a result of Frieza destroying Planet Vegeta. As the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly's strength and speed greatly excel that of any Super Saiyan shown previously. Broly's height and muscle mass are also greatly increased after transforming; the former reaching 9'0" (274 cm) in height. His power level also rises on several occasions found throughout the film, though whether this is caused by the form or is simply Broly increasing his power level is left unclear. Additionally, the irises and pupils in his eyes disappear, and his hair changes to a light-green color. In addition, although it has similarities to the Super Saiyan Third Grade form, and was referred to as such by one source, it also possessed tremendous speed, which could be considered "Ultra-First Class", which was demonstrated with his effortlessly dodging rapid attacks from a combined front of both Goku and Piccolo at one point, as well as a clothesline maneuver he performed on Goku late in their battle. The form is genetically unique to Broly (and his clone Bio-Broly) due to being a birth-given power. Since his power level in this form is so vast, Broly has been shown to take extremely powerful attacks without flinching, such as a point-blank Kamehameha from Goku. Broly showcases his strength in this form by destroying Planet Shamo with a single energy sphere. The form's effectiveness is shown in full force as he fought two Super Saiyan Full Powers, two Super Saiyan Second Grades, and a Super Namekian all at the same time while remaining in control of the whole fight, with his opponents being unable to hurt him in the least. It was not until Goku uses the channeled ki of Gohan, Piccolo, Future Trunks and Vegeta that Broly is beaten for the first time in this form. When powering up to his maximum Super Saiyan power in this state Broly's hair changes from a green color to a dull yellow color with a green tint, just like his C-Type transformation. However, with his aura up, it's the golden glow of an ordinary Super Saiyan. He uses this fully powered enhancement at the end of his battle with Goku in Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan and throughout his entire appearance as a Legendary Super Saiyan in Broly - The Second Coming. When he reappears on Earth during Broly - Second Coming, Gohan can hardly hold his own against the Legendary Super Saiyan. In his Super Saiyan 2 transformation, Gohan is able to inflict some damage to Broly, but not enough to shift the battle in his favor. During the battle, Broly is also capable of surviving lava as a Legendary Super Saiyan using a shield, as shown when he emerges from a lava pool shortly after Gohan tricked him into being caught in it in a last-ditch effort of defeating him.
Other
Standard Tactics: Broly will enforce hard hitting tactics where he can torture his opponent the entire way through, hitting them with gut wrenching punches and powerful ki blast.
Weaknesses
- Standard Ki Weaknesses: Due to the nature of ki draining stamina and energy, Dragon Ball characters ki usage requires them to usually use their higher levels of energy in short bursts, using a large amount of ki overtime can greatly weaken them to the point that characters far lower then them can actually harm them with attacks. Taking large amounts of damage can greatly deplete a ki users attacks, making it where attacks that would otherwise kill massively weakened characters, only pushes them back. Ki users that are able to ki sense cannot do it when their guard is dropped, such as when Vegeta was able to sneak attack Son Goku during the end of their fight in the Buu Saga. Despite some ki users being able to reach blasts that can destroy planets through charged attacks or techniques, they have not shown to be able to tank such blasts themself, with attacks that have destroyed several planets in the series always killing the character. Even characters such as Majin Buu's body cannot withstand the energy of a planet exploding.
- Unique Weaknesses: Broly has a hard time containing his own Ki, and it is seen many times destroying his body. Taking any mortal wound can have his Ki explode out of him and vaporize his body. He isn’t very smart, and will attack anything vaguely resembling Goku, or anything that sounds like a baby’s cry. Broly’s Crown restricts his powers to a point.
Note
- Broly's feat of destroying Southern Galaxy is not 3-C as he didn't in actuality destroy all of it, even though we visually see the scene, Goku later in the movie teleports into South Galaxy. This video explains the context further.
- Some clips used on the profile come from an anime or movie due to the fact that some abilities from ki use shouldn't function much differently from how they can in canon, along with this sometimes the anime version/video game version of a scene will be used for cleaner visuals. Toriyama himself directly overlooks scenes in the anime and movies and gives Toei the thumbs up[12].
- The speed scaling for PLs are taken with a grain of salt as there are noticeable times where someone's speed isn't equal to their power, such as Burter being faster then Recoome and Jeice, along with Super Saiyan Grade 3 Trunks having his power greatly increased but his speed decreased.
