Well, I can't exactly call them misguided. But soon they shall know this devil's power. A power greater than they ever imagined. The power of a son of Sparda.
~ Vergil about the Order of the Sword

Foolishness, Dante, foolishness. Might controls everything. And without strength, you cannot protect anything. Let alone yourself.
~ Vergil to Dante

The knight in dark armor is well versed in the same art of combat as Dante's. Everything about this knight remains as a mystery.
~ Nelo Angelo's description

That day, if our positions were switched... Would our fates be different? Would I have your life, and you mine? Let's settle this... Dante.
~ Vergil awaiting Dante

Background

Vergil is a major antagonist of the Devil May Cry series. He is the brother of legendary Devil Hunter, Dante, and the byproduct of the love between a human woman, and the legendary demonic knight named Sparda. As half-Demons, Vergil and Dante have been gifted extraordinary powers.

After experiencing the trauma of his mother's death, and his own abandonment, Vergil sought only power, and pursued his need to kill Dante for their fundamental differences in morality. Through suffering defeat after defeat, however, Vergil was eventually enslaved by the Dark Prince, Mundus, and turned into the mindless Nelo Angelo.

Eventually escaping his enslavement as the Dark Angel, Vergil's body reached its limit, and as such he used his Yamato blade to divide his human and demon selves, thus creating V and Urizen. After a long adventure, V reunited with Urizen, and Vergil returned to his full strength once again, this time finding opposition in the form of his estranged son, Nero.

Statistics

Tier: High 4-C, higher in Devil Trigger

Name: Vergil

Origin: Devil May Cry

Sex: Male

Age: Around 18 years old

Classification: Human/Demon Hybrid, Son of Sparda

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral (Vergil has no allegiances towards anyone, good or evil, and is entirely self-serving. He only makes allies to further his own goals, but has no problem betraying people, whether it be a wicked demon or his own brother. Vergil only seeks to gain power for his own self-serving purposes, not caring about morality one way or the other)

Dimensionality: 3-D

Attack Potency: High Mass Star level (Has been depicted to be able to face Sanctus. Should be superior to his mortally wounded self who could overpower Nero, with Nero having defeated Sanctus Diabolica previously. A weakened Sanctus within The Savior could create perfect recreations of entire areas, including ones with the Sun present), higher in Devil Trigger (Devil Trigger increases attacking power)

Durability: High Mass Star level, higher in Devil Trigger

Striking Strength: High Mass Star Class, higher in Devil Trigger

Lifting Strength: Class K (Should be comparable to other demons such as Nero, who could casually lift extremely large demons like Berial)

Combat Speed: Faster Than Light, higher in Devil Trigger

Reaction Speed: Faster Than Light (Comparable to Dante (Devil May Cry) who is able to avoid lasers from the Damned Rook, which move at lightspeed), higher in Devil Trigger (Devil Trigger increases combat speed)

Stamina: Superhuman (Demons are constantly put on a level beyond human capabilities, able to withstand combat and other extremely strenuous activities without tiring. Although Vergil is part human, and thus does have a definable limit on his stamina, he is still beyond regular humans. Vergil is capable of fighting through dozens of areas filled with hostiles, that he defeats in extremely acrobatic manners, without taking a break or showing any signs of fatigue)

Range: Standard Melee, Extended Melee with Yamato

Intelligence: Genius in combat (Vergil is extremely intelligent in the field of combat, capable of instantly adapting to the fighting styles of massively different varieties of demons. The demons in particular that Vergil is able to take out, have existed as blood-lusted fighters for countless years, possibly even centuries)

Sex: Male

Age: 28 years old

Classification: Human/Demon Hybrid, Son of Sparda, Dark Angel, Black Knight

Alignment: Unaligned (Vergil, now the Black Knight known as Nelo Angelo, has become a complete puppet of Mundus. He now fights as per Mundus's orders, not having a mind of his own, and thus not abiding to any sense of personal morality, or selfish/selfless desires. Nelo Angelo only shows any form of personality when he sees Dante's Amulet, though these moments are few and far between)

Powers and Abilities

Standard Equipment

*Yamato: Vergil's primary weapon is the Yamato sword, which he wields with deadly accuracy. It is said that his speed of his techniques are simply too fast for the human eye to come up with when wielding this blade. The Yamato was given to Vergil as a keepsake by his father, the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, and was previously used by Sparda to seal away the pathway between the Human and Demon Realm.

*Amulet: A keepsake amulet from Vergil's birth-mother, Eva. It possesses mysterious power that is released when fused with Dante's identical amulet.

The Yamato was given to Vergil as a keepsake by his father, the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, and was previously used by Sparda to seal away the pathway between the Human and Demon Realm.

  • Beowulf: These gauntlets and greaves use the heavenly power of flash to strike down demonic entities with holy retribution. Although extremely powerful, the Beowulf set requires that Vergil get up close and personal with his target. However, the punches and kicks he can deliver with this set leave even the toughest enemies reeling!
  • Force Edge: Force Edge is a memento from Vergil's father, the legendary Dark Knight Sparda. The sword was used to defeat Mundus and seal the gateway of the Underworld for two millennia. When combined with the two Amulets gifted to Dante and Vergil, the Force Edge reaches its true form as the Devil Sword Sparda.

*Amulet: A keepsake amulet from Vergil's birth-mother, Eva. It possesses mysterious power that is released when fused with Dante's identical amulet.

*Greatsword: A gigantic greatsword that Nelo Angelo wears on his hip. It starts out being made of stone, but can grow far stronger once Nelo Angelo engulfs it in a mystical blue flame.

*Amulet: A keepsake amulet from Vergil's birth-mother, Eva. It possesses mysterious power that is released when fused with Dante's identical amulet. Nelo Angelo has his Amulet on but hidden beneath his armor, and later loses it after he is defeated by Dante.

Although extremely powerful, the Beowulf set requires that Vergil get up close and personal with his target. However, the punches and kicks he can deliver with this set leave even the toughest enemies reeling!
  • Mirage Edge: A weapon shaped from Vergil's own infernal energy. There's something about this blade—its shape and attacks—that resembles Force Edge, the sword his father wielded so long ago.

*Red Orb: A magic red stone of crystallized demon blood. Red Orbs are most often obtained by defeating enemies. They can also be found by smashing furniture, or they may fall out of the thin area when Dante lands on hard-to-reach surfaces. Red Orbs can be used as currency to buy upgrades for the firepower of weapons, and to purchase new actions for Devil Arms. Items such as Vital Stars and Devil Stars can also be purchased with Red Orbs.

  • Green Orb: A magic green stone of crystallized demon essence. When Dante absorbs a Green Orb, his life is restored. Defeated enemies sometimes drop Green Orbs, but only if Dante's life gauge is partially empty and the combo meter is a high level when the enemy dies.
  • White Orb: A magical white stone of crystallized devilspirit. When Dante absorbs a White Orb, power is replenished in the Devil Trigger gauge. White Orbs are located in rate spots on the map.
  • Blue Orb: A magic blue stone of crystallized life power. It boosts one's maximum life. Each Blue Orb extends Dante's life meter by one segment, allowing him to sustain more damage before dying. Blue Orbs can be obtained by collecting four Blue Orb fragments.
  • Purple Orb: Orbs that can be purchased through the shop menu. Each Purple Orb extends Dante's Devil Trigger gauge by one segment. The longer the Devil Trigger gauge extends, the longer Dante can remain in Devil Trigger mode.
  • Gold Orb: Gold Orbs allow Dante to continue if killed during a mission, without having to restart the mission from the beginning. Yellow Orbs are sometimes found on the map, and they can also be purchased from the shop menu by spending Red Orbs. Dante can only purchase three Yellow Orbs ever.
  • Vital Star: A spiritual stone made using alchemy. They come in two variants; Vital Star S, which restores a small amount of life, and Vital Star L, which restores a large amount of life.
  • Devil Star: A spiritual stone made using alchemy that restores a large amount of magic power. Devil Stars can be found in certain locations, or purchased through the shop menu.

Notable Techniques

*Dark Slayer: A Style used by a warrior fallen from grace. The power of darkness gives birth to new weapons and skills. Vergil's Dark Slayer Style acts much like Dante's Trickster Style, though it also focuses greatly on teleportation as a means of evasion, and summoning swords as projectiles as opposed to using firearms.

*Judgement Cut: An incredibly fast attack utilizing the space-cutting powers of the Yamato. Simply through Vergil opening and then closing the Yamato, the enemy becomes overwhelmed by a slew of sword slashes. This works from no matter how far away Vergil is from his foe, this proving extremely deadly.

  • Summoned Swords: Vergil hurls magically generated swords at the enemy. They home-in on the enemy and can be spawned as frequently as Vergil desires. He can also summon multiple of these teal blades to circle him, essentially creating a barrier around him.
  • Stinger: When wielding the Force Edge or Mirage Edge, Vergil lunges forwards and spears the enemy. This move is a great way to approach enemies swiftly and knock them off balance, so that other attacks may follow. Dante usually follows-up Stinger by stabbing repeatedly at a rapid pace, which is referred to as Million Stab. Vergil's Stinger is quicker but has less range than Dante's.

Other

Weaknesses: Vergil is extremely overconfident and overly-obsessed with defeating Dante. As stated by Dante himself, Vergil's main weakness is his inability to cope with his losses and acknowledge his trauma, which has led to him abandoning his human self in the past. This is further extended with Nelo Angelo, as him seeing Dante's Amulet in any fashion causes for him to have a violent mental breakdown.
