Background

Shantae is the eponymous protagonist of the Shantae series. A half-genie and the guardian of Scuttle Town. Shantae works tirelessly to thwart the plans of the nefarious lady-pirate, Risky Boots, or other forces threatening the town.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Shantae’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

General Information

Shantae is a half-genie, whose job is to protect her home, Scuttle Town. She utilizes magical abilities to help her in her adventures.

Physical Appearance

Shantae is a professional belly dancer, her outfit usually consists of sheer harem pants, a bra, and gold jewelry. This look is also known as the red bedlah attire and is the default look in every game, though it does change slightly as well. She has a relatively thin yet curvy figure and is rather short compared to some other characters in the game. Shantae has olive/tan-skin with blue eyes, and long growing purple hair tied back in a ponytail stem stalk. Her parentage is uncertain, but it is known that her mother was a genie and there is speculation about who her father was.

Throughout the series, Shantae has had the ability to transform into many different things by using her magical powers. Depending on the adventure and circumstance, she also has worn many different outfits.

Personality

In​ Shantae , as the Guardian Genie of Scuttle Town, Shantae lives in a lighthouse by the sea where she can Shantae at her light house spot incoming ships and trouble. During the events of the first game, she is portrayed at the beginning as young and somewhat naive. In addition, her strong sense of justice drives her to help people in need. She chases Risky Boots across the map in order to stop her plans and has a strong enmity for the pirate as a result.

Slightly shy, Shantae is initially afraid of the citizens of Scuttle Town discovering her status as a half-genie. In addition, she often puts herself down; believing that only being half-genie is not good enough. After being tricked by Risky near the end of the game and subsequently thwarting her plans, she overcomes her insecurity and shyness and comes to terms with these anxieties, and is happy that the townsfolk still accept her.

Shantae has a deep care for her adoptive uncle, Mimic, as well as her friends Sky and Bolo, and at the end of the first game gives up on the chance to enjoy eternal peace in the Genie Realm in order to be with them. She also considers the zombie Rottytops as her friend, although Rotty's own attitude towards her, while friendly for the most part, is more ambivalent, as she does not hesitate in claiming she would like to eat Shantae's brains (which Shantae seems to take as a joke).

In Risky's Revenge, she's shown to have grown more confident, enough to believe that she's the only person able to stop Risky Boots and discarding Mimic's suggestion that Sky and Bolo should go instead. At the end of the game, Shantae is betrayed by Rottytops to Risky Boots in exchange for her brains (although Risky chooses to back down from the deal) and loses her genie powers. She is then shown to be much less self-assured, despite the fact that she manages to defeat Nega-Shantae, which causes Shantae to lose her magic powers. She is then comforted by Bolo, Sky and Mimic, who tell her they will help her protect to Scuttle Town from Risky and other evil forces.

In Pirate's Curse, Shantae forms a temporary alliance with her nemesis Risky Boots to help stop the Pirate Master, despite not trusting Risky. Over the course of the game, Shantae slowly forms a bit of an attachment to her, asking her if she could "join the good guys for once" and even going as far as saving her life later on. Squid Baron calls Shantae a tomboy at some point. Shantae's more unusual habits are revealed during the game's progression; we learn that Shantae accidentally destroyed Sky's Library Card once by nibbling on it when she got nervous and that she considers herself a bad role model due to her bad temper and fashion sense. Shantae also appears to have low self-esteem (possibly tied to the loss of her magic), as when she was threatened with losing her hair after getting dismissed as Guardian Genie, she says, "They can't take my hair, can they, Uncle? It's all I have left!" At the end, if the player collects all the dark magic from Cacklebats and gets the true ending to the game, Shantae gets her magic back and is eventually re-hired as Guardian Genie as she was fired in the previous game. After that happens, she is in much higher spirits and appears to have regained some self-esteem. If the player does not collect all the Cacklebats, then Shantae will not get her magic back, and is forced to hope that Risky will eventually take down the Pirate Master on her own.

In Half-Genie Hero, after getting her role as Guardian Genie back, she is tasked with protecting Scuttle Town from various threats like the Giga Mermaid (who reforms after her battle), the Barons of Sequin Land, etcetera Unlike in the previous game, Shantae is a lot more confident this time, most likely due to the fact that she got her magic back and is once again a half genie, as well as finally being the town's Guardian Genie again. Despite Shantae getting along with her during the events of Pirate's Curse, she still maintains a strong enmity for Risky due to her being her archenemy as the first thing she says to the pirate is, "Risky Boots! Back to your old tricks, I see." Shantae is also shown to have a short fuse at times when dealing with time wasters, such as Hypno Baron and Squid Baron's merchandising plot.

In the Friends to the End DLC, Shantae's magic gets inverted and she becomes Nega-Shantae, who is a chaotic and evil version of Shantae. Fortunately, her friends are able to defeat Nega-Shantae in Shantae's mind and change her magic back to normal. Once she is restored, Shantae reveals that she had gotten caught up in trying to be a hero to make up for her human half, but forgot that she could rely on others along the way and rushed things. This is a trait that has lead to disaster before (such as losing her magic in Risky's Revenge).

In Seven Sirens, Shantae and her friends go to a tropical island resort where they encounter other Half-Genie allies. At the beginning of the game, Shantae is invited along with the other Half-genies to participate in the Half-Genie Festival. During the performance, however, the Seven Sirens cut the lights and use the cover of darkness to kidnap the other Half-Genies, leaving Shantae alone onstage once the lights come back, much to the confusion of the audience. The next day Shantae begins to feel suspicious, so she decides to venture into the islands underground terrain to uncover its secrets and come face-to-face with the Seven Sirens, freeing the other Half-Genies along the way, despite her allies (specifically Mimic and Sky, though her dialogue implies that Bolo doesn't want her to disappear either) forbidding her to go in an attempt to protect her. This is a good show of Shantae's determination - unlike others, Shantae is not willing to sit around and wait for problems to be solved. She is determined to help those in need, even if it means putting herself in harm's way.

Shantae's Parents

It is mentioned several times that she doesn't know who her parents are, only that her mother was a genie. Although she's willing to explore her genie side, hoping that it will bring her closer to her mother, she turns down the genies' offer to stay in the Genie Realm at the end of the first game, and at the end of Risky's Revenge is shown expressing sadness as being even farther from her half-genie nature (and subsequently her mother) after having lost her magic powers. It is strongly implied in the events of Pirate's Curse that the mysterious Warrior she meets inside the Village of Lost Souls is none other than the spirit of her father, who went into the land of the dead to search for his daughter but never returned. Neither Shantae nor the Warrior himself seem to realize the possible connection.

Abilities

Shantae's Half-genie nature gives her several magic abilities.

  • Hair Whip (aka Ponytail Whip) - Shantae's trademark and default move. Shantae can use her long purple ponytail hair as a weapon, cracking it like a whip by shaking her head. It was revealed in Shantae: Risky's Revenge that this skill is not a by-product of her genie half, as she is able to use this ability after her powers are removed. It's possible that this skill is a product of her own magic not tied to her genie side, or may have come from her father.
  • Magical Belly Dances - Shantae can use her ability to belly dance to cause various kinds of magical effects, most notably teleportation and transformation. Although her dancing style is certainly mostly fanciful, similarities have been noted with the Turkish Oryantal Dans style of belly dance.
  • Transformation - Shantae can transform into many forms such as a monkey, elephant, spider, harpy, mermaid, and Tinkerbat once she's learned the correct dance from a Guardian Genie, Magic Fountain or in the case of the Tinkerbat dance by buying the sequence from a man in Bandit Town.
  • Magic spells and magic items - Shantae can use various kinds of magic spells and items that are bought at shops. The magic properties of these items are apparently not tied to Shantae's genie powers, as she retains the ability to use them even after her powers are taken away in Risky's Revenge.
  • Fighter Moves - Having received training from Bolo and through upgrades in the shop, Shantae can perform various martial arts techniques such as Back-dashes, Recoveries and several types of kick attacks (Power Kick, Drill Kick, Uppercut Kick)
  • Costumes - Shantae has different outfits she can wear that change her stats and abilities.
  • Fusion Dances - During the events of Shantae and the Seven Sirens, Shantae is able to use "Fusion Stones" to borrow the power of the other half-genies after rescuing them. By doing so, Shantae gains four new dances: Seer Dance (From Plink), Refresh Dance (From Vera), Spark Dance (From Zapple) and Quake Dance (From Harmony).

Creation

In 1994, as Matt Bozon was still engaged with his future wife Erin, she got a flash of inspiration while coming back from her camp counsellor days, and created the character of Shantae, named after one of the campers. Later on, Matt Bozon asked her what she would come up with if she was to create a video game character. She disappeared, and when going after her after some time, he found her working on sketches of a character, Shantae, in dancing poses. Matt Bozon liked the idea and fleshed out the background and mythology surrounding the character.

Matt Bozon has provided two contradictory versions of the creation of the Hair Whip. In the first one, he stated that at the time, Erin had very long hair and Matt would often take a blow in his face each time she turned around, which inspired him for Shantae's trademark attack. However, he later stated that Erin's first sketches of Shantae already featured the Hair Whip.

The archived version of WayForward's site also depicts Shantae with a very different appearance, as a brunette with a less manga-ish appearance. She is described as a troubled genie, born without any magic power, although she was capable of hair whipping already.

Her catchphrase, "Ret-2-Go", came from a friend of the Bozons who kept using it in the animation clean up team for the Warner Bros. movie The Iron Giant to break for lunch. The phrase then reached the Shantae team and ended up as Shantae's catchphrase. In Matt Bozon's vision, Shantae uses it because she thinks it's cool but her friends actually can't stand it (although other characters have used it in-universe).

Notable Techniques/Items

Monkey

The monkey is the first form Shantae learns in Shantae (Dribble Fountain), Shantae: Risky's Revenge (Squid Baron's Labyrinth) and Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (Main Street). It is a small, fast form that allows her to climb walls and perform wall jumps, and move quickly through narrow passages. When the monkey touches a wall while in mid-air, she can be made to climb it by pressing up or down, or wall jump off of it.

The Monkey Claw allows the monkey to attack. The Monkey Bullet allows the monkey to spring off of a wall horizontally like a bullet, which functions as both an attack and a way to reach new areas. The dance sequence in Shantae is down} & right, and in Risky's Revenge it's dance pose #1.

In the WarioWare: D.I.Y. microgame Shantae NAB!, Shantae is for some reason stuck in her monkey form and can only return to her normal form by catching a gem bouncing on the ground.

Elephant

The Elephant form is the second form she receives in both Shantae (Golem Mine) and Shantae: Risky's Revenge (Tangle Forest Cave). The elephant is large, slow moving, and can barely jump, but her charge can instantly destroy certain rocks, walls, and creatures (such as Stone Golems). It is the only normal form to come with an attack.

The Elephant Tote/Elephant Stomp allows her to perform the stomp move, a downward attack while in mid-air Down + B. The dance sequence in Shantae is down & left, and in Risky's Revenge it's dance pose #2.

In Half-Genie Hero, it is gained for clearing Tassel Town. This form's large size allows it to withstand sand storms.

Spider

The Spider is the third form she acquires in Shantae (Cackle Mound). It allows for wall-crawling like the Monkey, but on background walls rather than walls in the foreground.

Spider Venom allows her to attack. The dance sequence is down A.

In Half-Genie Hero, the Spider Form returns with a new look that resembles the mythical "Arachne", rather than an actual spider. It is an optional form found in Tassel Town, and is changed to having the ability to crawl on the ceiling after doing a double jump or jumping in mid-air. She is also able to spit spider venom like in Shantae. However, the form was originally planned to also climb up webs, fire webbing to wrap up her foes and drain health from the wrapped enemies. This transformation is the only one that can duck. It is also the only returning form to go from being a required form to being optional.

Harpy

The Harpy is the fourth and final form found in Shantae (Twinkle Palace). She can fly through the air, allowing access to all remaining areas, but cannot crouch or crawl.

The Harpy Talon allows her to attack with claws. The dance sequence is down & B.

In Half-Genie Hero, it is gained for clearing Hypno Baron's Castle. Repeatedly tapping the jump button allows Shantae to fly, and collecting the Harpy Talon allows Shantae to attack with feather projectiles. As a compensating drawback for the freedom of movement, this form has high horizontal inertia and is unable to glide, making it hard to navigate obstacles with precision.

Tinkerbat

The Tinkerbat is an optional secret form in Shantae (Advanced Genies! (500 gems)) in Bandit Town, available only if the game is played on a Game Boy Advance (or through Debug Mode). She can climb on walls and background surfaces, wall jump, and charge with a battering ram (by pressing Down + B), combining the functionality of the Monkey, Spider, and Elephant. She also has a cutlass which swings in a wide arc, attacking enemies above and below. She also has an amusing run animation that suggests insane panic. Because of her variety of abilities, the Tinkerbat is the best general-purpose form and is highly recommended as it reduces the amount of transformation during exploration. The main drawback is that despite her small size, the Tinkerbat cannot crawl through narrow spaces, requiring the player to revert back to Shantae form every so often. The dance sequence is down, up, up.

In Half-Genie Hero the Tinkerbat returns as exclusive DLC for backers who contributed $55 or more to the Kickstarter campaign (but was later made available to all players in the game's Ultimate Edition). This form attacks with a sword and can hover for a short time using the jump button. To obtain it, Shantae needs to purchase the Dryad Dance from Tuki, then trade it for the Tinkerbat dance.

Introduced in Risky's Revenge

Mermaid

The Mermaid is the third and final form she acquires in Shantae: Risky's Revenge (Hypno Tower). She can swim (Up, Down, Left, Right) in this form and submerge below the surface, allowing her to discover new areas that she can't even begin to reach in her normal form.

With the Mermaid Bubble she can fire bubble projectiles that can destroy rocks that block her path. The dance pose is #3. Not surprisingly, the Mermaid form is useless on land, as Shantae can barely move and jump on her fins and hands.

In Half-Genie Hero, it is found in Mermaid Falls. Certain enemies won't attack this form, and will help attack other enemies when Shantae uses Mermaid Bubble.

Crab

The Crab is a new form rewarded to Shantae for clearing Mermaid Falls in Half-Genie Hero. In this form, Shantae gains the ability to freely move along surfaces under water and descend slowly like a parachute in open water. Shantae also gains the ability to tuck into her shell when on a surface and is invulnerable in this state. Because this form is small, it can go through gaps the Mermaid form cannot pass. Gaining the Crab Claw lets this form attack and snip certain obstacles.

It was originally planned to appear in Risky Revolution. Back then, it was supposed to be able to run and drop in the water like a parachute (much like in Half-Genie Hero), allowing Shantae to reach more underwater places. This ability was supposed to become useless further in the game, as it would be outclassed when Shantae gained the Mermaid Form.

Bat

An optional new form introduced in Half-Genie Hero that is found in Mermaid Falls. This form only allows Shantae to fly horizontally, but it does not need the repeated pressing of the jump button to fly like the Harpy form, and is more stable to control. It can also fit into small gaps. Gaining the Bat Sonar lets you see in the dark within a short radius.

Mouse

A new form introduced in Half-Genie Hero that Shantae receives for clearing Cape Crustacean. This form allows Shantae to enter very small, maze-like passageways. Gaining the Mouse Bite lets this form attack.

Dryad

An optional new form introduced in Half-Genie Hero which is bought from Tuki for 100 gems. This form allows Shantae to produce up to three Oranges at a time in exchange for magic. This form can't move or attack, but is completely invulnerable.



Blobfish

An optional new form introduced in Half-Genie Hero, it is gained from trading the Obliterate Dance with Tuki, which costs 300 gems. This form has Shantae continuously bounce around as a blobfish. The bouncing damages enemies but one wrong move and Shantae takes damage instead. It is not considered a water-based form for the purpose of the Waterfall Relic, despite being a sea creature.

Gemjug

An optional new form introduced in Half-Genie Hero, it is gained from trading the Warp Dance with Tuki, which is bought from her for 200 gems. This form lets Shantae produce Gems in exchange for magic. Like the Dryad form, it cannot move or attack but is invulnerable.


Sophia III

An optional new form introduced in Half-Genie Hero, it is gained from trading the Super Revive Dance with Tuki. It is a reference to the Sophia 3rd vehicle from the Blaster Master series. This form moves at double speed (like the Monkey) and can fire blasts of energy either forward or upwards at a high rate.

Gastro Fusion Gastro Drill The Gastro Fusion coin is received from Vera after she is rescued from Coral Mine, and it allows Shantae to transform into a Gastro Drill. Using the Gastro Fusion, Shantae can dig through soft dirt to reach new areas.
Tortoise Fusion Bonker Tortoise The Tortoise Fusion coin is given to Shantae by Zapple after rescuing her from Sea Vent Lab, and gives her the power to transform into a Bonker Tortoise. With this form Shantae gains a spin attack and a stomp attack, both of which can break through rocks. It has similar powers to the Elephant Form in other games, although it moves much faster.
Frog Fusion Sea Frog

The Frog Fusion coin is given to Shantae by Harmony after rescuing her from the Boiler, and it allows her to become a Sea Frog. As a Sea Frog, Shantae can swim through water at low or high speeds. It sits in a middle ground between her Mermaid and Crab Forms, allowing for a full range of underwater movement while still being able to fit into small gaps.

Octo Fusion Jet Octo The Octo Fusion coin is given to Shantae after Fillin reveals her true self as Rotty once she is saved from the Squid Pit. The Jet Octo form allows Shantae to boost through the air on jets of ink vapor, effectively giving her a double and triple jump. Essentially, it's an organic version of the Cannon from Shantae and the Pirate's Curse.

Seer Dance

The Seer Dance is the first dance obtained by Shantae when her magic is combined with Plink's through the use of a Fusion Stone, which she receives as a reward from the head scientist of the Metal Fish crew. This dance allows Shantae to seek out hidden pathways and items, and it reveals invisible enemies.

This is an extremely handy attack to have, as it allows you to attack enemies above you very easily, without the precise timing of a jump-whip.

Sash 400 Attack during a spin kick to drill through your foes.

The drill attack is ideal for hitting enemies below you. It travels perfectly diagonally, which makes it easy to aim even at the smallest of targets. If the target survives, Shantae will immediately end the kick and drop to the ground; keep this in mind if you wish to avoid the target's retaliatory collision damage.

Cuff 500 Hold down attack to charge up a mighty elbow dash.

This one takes a while to charge. It can't be cancelled, so you might have to re-train yourself not to hold the B button for running while you are idle, or you might find yourself in a charge directly into a pit. Best to avoid using it in areas with pits.

Tiara 900 Attack during an elbow dash for a powerful twirl attack.

The attack is powerful, but it comes with the dangers of the elbow dash, and requires more time to prepare. An additional advantage of this form is that it takes you very high, so a few items that would otherwise require a more advanced transformation can be gotten without said forms. That said, it's extremely expensive, so by the time you can afford it you might already have the requisite form.

Death Mask

Found on Spiderweb Island after Shantae gets the Scimitar upgrade. Allows entrance into the Village of Lost Souls, and can be traded to Abner for a Pirate Flare afterwards.

Three coins (red, green, and blue) found in the Village of Lost Souls. All three must be found and given to the Gamers in order to get the Locket.

Summons the Warrior when used in the fire pit at the top of the Village of Lost Souls.

Joe's Soul

The lost soul of Barracuda Joe, found in the Village of the Lost Souls. Giving this soul back to him will undo the petrify spell.

Standard Tactics: Shantae will generally use her hair whip and magic to her advantage. Additionally, if she's equipped with an item, she won't hesitate to use them.

Weaknesses: It's arguable that Shantae might have limited amounts of magic, however it is stated that her magic is a restless source of energy, which likely means the magic meter are just purely ludonarrative dissonance. Her defense is reduced by half in her Dancer suit. Shantae's movement is limited with the Space Patrol suit as she cannot crouch in it, and it doesn't allow her to swim.
