Background

MegaMan Volnutt, known as Rock Volnutt in Japan, is the main character of the Mega Man Legends series.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of MegaMan Volnutt’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

As MegaMan Trigger
A long time ago, MegaMan Volnutt was known as MegaMan Trigger. Trigger's primary function was as a Purifier Unit on a synthetic planet called Elysium (or Heaven in the Japanese versions), a place that housed what is called the "Master System". The purpose of the Master System was to watch over the Carbons on Terra. His job as a Purifier Unit was to eliminate any Aberrant Units (Irregulars in the Japanese version) that threatened the Master System. Trigger was also always close to the the Master throughout his tenure as a Purifier Unit. One day, the Master requested MegaMan to travel with him to Terra so he could see the Carbons, even though the Master could not survive long outside of Elysium. They used a shuttle pod and landed in Calbania Island, where the Master compares the life of the Carbons with Elysium, and realizes that while he lived in luxury for 3000 years, Elysium was cold and sterile, while the Carbons are happy even with hardship, pain, aging, and subsequently dying, and decides to give MegaMan the final command to destroy the Master System to make things right again. Before dying, the Master gives his genetic code sample to protect MegaMan, and orders him to delete all data in Elysium's library.

After the Master's death, MegaMan Trigger tried to fulfill his dying wish. The units from the System tried to stop Trigger, thinking he became an Aberrant Unit. As time went by, Yuna (Mother Unit of Terra) decided to take a neutral position, neither helping nor fighting against Trigger. Frustrated with Yuna's decision, Sera (Mother Unit of Elysium) traveled to Terra herself to stop MegaMan, and the two fought each other to a standstill, expending all their energy. Trigger's original body was almost totally destroyed in the fight, and all his parameters had to be reset to heal (similar to formatting a hard drive), transforming him into a baby without any memory of the past. To avoid his memory being wiped out and make sure Sera would never find the Master's genetic code, Trigger transferred his essential data files to Data. Yuna took the opportunity to seal both inside stasis fields, with MegaMan and Data being sealed inside a ruin in Nino Island and Sera with Geetz in Forbidden Island, where they stayed for a long period.

As MegaMan Volnutt
Several years later, the Digger Barrell Caskett was researching the ruins in Nino Island without the Guildmaster's permission, and found a diamond-shaped object near the entrance. When he touched the object, it melted away and awoke MegaMan and Data from their suspended animation. As Barrell had broken into the ruins without permission he could not reveal where he had found them, so he took the two under his care. Barrell's granddaughter Roll Caskett insisted on naming the baby after one of her favorite video game characters, so the child was named MegaMan Volnutt (in the Japanese version, Barrell named him Rock to make a pun with Roll). As soon as MegaMan was old enough, he embarked on the life of a Digger, searching for Refractors and other resources for the Caskett family as well as defeating Reaverbots in his many adventures.

Mega Man Legends
After exiting a digout in a tower, the Flutter began to malfunction and crashed on Kattelox Island, where the first game takes place. MegaMan helped to protect the island from the attack of the Bonnes, a family of air pirates searching for legendary treasure supposedly hidden in the ruins of the island, and that if its seals are broken, a terrible disaster will occur. Before facing the pirates, MegaMan meets Tron Bonne and helps her escape from the dog Paprika, and she develops a crush on him. The island's city mayor, Amelia, is an old friend of Barrell and gives them a Digger's License to allow them to search the ruins for parts to fix the Flutter. By Amelia's request, MegaMan also investigates the ruins of the island to learn about its past and if the legends are true, fighting against the Bonnes and Reaverbots during his search. When the Main Gate is opened he encounters MegaMan Juno, a mysterious person who knows about his past life as MegaMan Trigger. Juno captures MegaMan in order to keep him out of the way while he prepares to use Eden to eliminate everyone on the island. MegaMan is freed by the Bonnes and he fights against Juno to save Kattelox Island. After Juno's defeat, Data reveals he knows about MegaMan's past but can't reveal it to him yet, but when the time comes, he will tell him everything, including his mission. The game ends with MegaMan and his family leaving the island aboard the Flutter.

Mega Man Legends 2
In the second game, Barrell and his friend Verner Von Bluecher travel to Forbidden Island aboard the airship Sulphur-Bottom in the hopes of finding the Mother Lode. Unfortunately, the airship becomes stuck in the storm that perpetually surrounds the island when it is attacked by Gatz and "Matilda"—a woman who looks like Roll's long-lost mother. MegaMan and Roll go to Calinca to try to find a way to rescue the Sulphur-Bottom and to discover if Matilda really is Roll's missing mother. In order to get through the storm Roll plans to create a Dropship. While searching for parts at the Junk Shop in Calinca they encounter Joe, a man with amnesia who was also creating a Dropship. After MegaMan and Roll save him, he gives his Dropship to them as thanks. After traveling through Forbidden Island, MegaMan accidentally freed Sera and Geetz when he stopped the storm surrounding the island to prevent the Sulphur-Bottom from crashing. They were taken inside the Sulphur-Bottom where Geetz says they need to obtain four keys to unlock the Mother Lode. Bluecher requests that MegaMan search for the keys, and so he embarks on a journey that sees him fighting against Reaverbots and pirates to obtain them. After all of the keys have been collected Sera and Geetz turn on MegaMan. As Geetz engages him in battle Sera escapes to Elysium with the keys. At the conclusion of their fight Geetz explodes, causing heavy damage to MegaMan. Working together Yuna and Data are able to repair him, and during the repair process MegaMan recovers part of his memories as Trigger. Once restored to full strength, MegaMan follows Sera to Elysium to stop her from using the Carbon Reinitialization Program. At the end of the game MegaMan is left trapped on Elysium along with Yuna and Sera, while the enigmatic Elder System begins to reactivate. Back on Terra, Roll and Tron began working together on a rocket to rescue MegaMan.

As such this weapon is comparable to Mega Man X during the Elf Wars, as Mega Man Legends takes place at the end of the timeline[1]. Elf Wars X along with Zero were able to fight on par with Omega during the Elf Wars. They both were able to defeat him with their Final Strike attack. This makes them far superior to their X Era selves who fought and defeated Optic Sunflower who used the data of the Final Weapon to perform his Earth Crush attack. Zero after gaining Optic Sunflower's weapon data can also use this attack with his Tenshouha technique. The Final Weapon was stated to be able to destroy the Earth and was going to be used by Sigma to do so. The data of things in Mega Man are portrayed as equal to their real world counterparts as shown consistently throughout the series multiple[2] times[3]. Optic Sunflower is also stated and shown to have control over data within cyberspace, being the root cause of the programs going haywire upon becoming Maverick. He also can download any data stored such as Cut Man's which was used to fight the Maverick Hunters. The Final Weapon's data should be stored as Mega Man Xtreme shows that the past data of entire stages is stored within cyberspaces) | At least Small Building level (Potency) (At his strongest during this point, as in this state he was able to fight and defeat a fully transformed Sera, whereas back in his state as MegaMan Trigger his body was almost totally destroyed while fighting her, with MegaMan Trigger being stronger than his pre-repairs self as he had to undergo reverting back into a baby and re-growing up to regenerate). Attack Speed: Supersonic (Shot down various missiles while waiting for Roll to fix the Parabola Gun. Can tag moving missiles and torpedoes which travel at speeds greater then 3200 km/h). Massively Hypersonic Attack Speed with Shining Laser (With Shining Laser, a pseudo-laser created from receiving an X Buster (see note) and the prism crystal, making it comparable to Mega Man X during the elf wars, as Mega Man Legends takes place at the end of the timeline[4]. X scales far above Mega Man and is undoubtedly superior to Duo who is capable of traveling through galaxies and across the universe while doing his job to destroy the Evil Energy, Duo is also stated to be intergalactic multiple times) | Supersonic. Massively Hypersonic Attack Speed with Shining Laser

Reaction Speed: Supersonic | Supersonic

Can fight against Revearbots who can camoflage to sneak attack. Successfully explored Forbbiden Island, a place that all diggers that have went there never returned from, being noted to have done what even Von Bluecher couldn't do in 30 years)

Powers and Techniques

Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Divine Protection (After defeating ViA■ and destroying the Robot Destroy Program within him, The Player was able to fully correct the Deep Log in its entirety. However, Via says The Player's story isnt over and RiCO repeats this and says that there will be future program errors in the Deep Log for them to correct and it would be insecure for her alone to manage it alone. Therefore to solve this problem that can happen in the future, RiCO will summon The Player in order to correct any irregular data in the Deep Log as she did in the start of the game), Immortality (Immortal Metaphysical Aspect; All robots "true existences" exist in their data, thus as long as their data is stored they can be remade or come back if their data is specifically "SAVED". With data further being explored through here), Regeneration (At least Low-Mid; If MegaMan is badly damaged by an attack, the program inside of him will restore his body to put him back in shape. Mid-High through Age Manipulation; Trigger's original body was almost totally destroyed in his fight with Sera, resetting all of his parameters so he could heal. Mid-Godly as their Data Forms; In Mega Man Xtreme, Sigma was trying to reproduce the past data of several mavericks in the mother computer to bring havoc to the world's peace and the only way the past data of previously defeated Mavericks from X1 and X2 could be stopped is if X goes inside as his data form. Inside the Mother Computer, X defeats Vile's data form along with the data forms of a bunch of mavericks he has previously defeated. However, despite defeating their data form, their data is still are able to come back for the rematches at the end of the game along with Vile being back in the hard mode's post game story. Despite destroying Vile's data twice, he was still able to come back and better then ever in Mega Man X8. In Mega Man ZX, Omega's soul data along with flashes of the past battle in Zero 3 are trapped in area O and even after defeat, he can come back without limit even after obtaining Model OX which contains his soul data. With data further being explored through here), Resurrection (Robots that are fought and defeated are able to be brought back as long as they still have their data, with this also extending to reploids being able to come back for rematches. With data further being explored through here), Non-Standard Interaction (Conceptual Interaction & Abstract Interaction; Can directly interact with, harm, and destroy a robots data, which all robots "true existences" rely on their data, thus as long as their data is stored they can be remade or come back if their data is specifically "SAVED". All data resides in the deep log of each game's data and information of the Mega Man Franchise and many other Capcom franchises, with it being stated that data makes up the characters' personality, memories are data pieces that can be used to materialize hunter programs and also have the feelings of the characters, their data is even what determines their own canonicity in reality, with all characters being considered data alongside all universes being made of data. With data further being explored through here).

Resistance to Information Manipulation & Conceptual Manipulation (Can take hits from characters that can directly interact with, harm, and destroy a robots data, which all robots "true existences" rely on their data, thus as long as their data is stored they can be remade or come back if their data is specifically "SAVED". With data further being explored through here), Plot Manipulation (As data determines one's canonicity in reality and all universes are made of data, one would need to fully change one's data in order to change their narrative. With data further being explored through here)

Genius Intelligence, Multilingualism (Volnutt is the only one that is able to understand Data), Acrobatics (Can do dodge rolls), Stealth Mastery (Can sneak up on a group and listen to their conversation), Weapon Mastery (A skilled user of his buster gun. With Machine Buster, shoots rapid fire bullets), Aquatic Breathing (Can move indefinetely underwater), Accelerated Development (Battle; Physical Stats; Noted as MegaMan journeys he grows stronger), Vehicular Mastery (Land Vehicles; Can casually manuver with the Jet Skates), Homing Attack (Can automatically lock-on to the nearest target), Energy Projection (Can shoot out energy blast from his buster gun), Forcefield Creation (Has a passive shield up that defends him from attacks noted as a life shield, which limits amount of damage taken), Age Manipulation (Trigger's original body was almost totally destroyed in his fight with Sera, resetting all of his parameters so he could heal).

Resistance to Extreme Colds (Can move in the Forbidden Island just fine, where there's a massive blizzard over the entire island), Extreme Heats (Can move around in rooms so hot the entire screen is red just fine)

Notable Techniques

  • Normal Arm: Normal Arm is MegaMan's normal arm without weapons. When not using a weapon, MegaMan can kick with his right leg in Mega Man Legends and lift objects in Mega Man Legends 2.
    • Kick: Kick is an attack from Mega Man Legends. It is used with the right leg when MegaMan is not equipped with a Special Weapon and with the left leg when he is in areas that the Mega Buster can't be used. In Mega Man Legends 2 it can only be used with the left leg, as the right arm function was replaced by the Lifter.
    • Lifter: Lifter is an action from Mega Man Legends 2 used by MegaMan with the right arm when he isn't equipped with a Special Weapon. He is able to lift light objects and enemies and throw them, causing damage to other enemies hit. MegaMan can lift enemies that cause negative status by contact, like burn and freeze from some Horokkos and Frongels, without receiving the status. The objects, characters, and enemies MegaMan can lift are Horokko, Frongel, Mirumijee, Jakko, Gorubesshu, Kuruguru, Miroc, King Miroc, Skaritt, Taburu, Snorubit, Otamarn, Koni, Kalmare, Servbots, Birdbots, Johnny, the gunners in Nino Island, the twins Appo and Dah, Shu, rabbits, pigs, bombs, and crates. When holding a Jakko, MegaMan will descent slowly if the jump button is held. Snorubit is the only enemy that can escape from MegaMan when hold. If MegaMan attempts to lift Roll Caskett in the Calinca tundra, she will slap him.
  • Interchangeable Weapons: MegaMan can equip a variety of different Special Weapons for different purposes and situations. His default weapon is the Mega Buster, a standard cannon mounted from the left arm. With modifications from Roll Caskett, he can replace his right arm with a number of other weaponry. Roll can build new weapons to him using parts that he finds.
  • Body Equipments: MegaMan can equip upgrades to his main body for easier tasks, such as battle and traveling purposes. Such additions include built in roller skates for higher speed, helmets, different levels of body armor, and upgrading the amount of damage the body can take.
  • Shield System: The game depicts MegaMan with a barrier system (shown by a blue capsule bar on the game screen) that lowers enemy damage and recoil. However, the bar is limited in power, and when decreased entirely without time to recharge, must be repaired by a recovery item.
  • Mega Buster: The Mega Buster, known as Rock Buster in Japan, is MegaMan's main weapon, a rapid firing arm cannon equipped in his left arm. It can be improved with Buster Parts, which modify four stats: Attack, Energy, Range and Rapid. MegaMan is only allowed 2 Buster Parts at a time, but upon obtaining the item Adapter Plug, he can equip 3 parts.
  • Active Buster: Fires homing missiles. When fully upgraded, it is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, surpassed only by the Shining Laser.
  • Aqua Blaster: Releases water to extinguish fires. It deals no damage and can only extinguish small flames, being useless against strong fire sources such as flamethrowers.
  • Blade Arm: Creates an energy blade for close-range combat.
  • Buster Cannon: A powerful cannon with good firepower and range.
  • Crusher: Throws powerful electro-magnetic bombs.
  • Drill Arm: Short-range drill that can be used to destroy certain types of walls.
  • Grand Grenade: Throws bombs that can crack certain walls. The Grand Grenade and the Powered Buster are the only weapons that can destroy the cracked ceiling in the Clozer Woods Sub-Gate. MegaMan is immune to the explosions.
  • Grenade Arm: Throws bombs with a delayed explosion. The bombs bounce on walls and can be kicked. Explodes immediately if touched. MegaMan is immune to the explosions.
  • Ground Crawler: Releases a bomb that rolls along the ground and explode when it touches an enemy.
  • Homing Missile: Fires homing missiles, lower rapid fire rate then the active buster.
  • Hunter Seeker: Launches an independent probe that homes in on the target MegaMan is locked on to.
  • Hyper Shell: A bazooka-like weapon that causes an explosion in the area it hits, spreading damage over a large area.
  • Machine Buster: A machine gun made with the arm parts of a Blumebear.
  • Machine Gun Arm: Weapon with a high rate of fire.
  • Powered Buster: Weapon with good firepower and range, but with low speed and amount of energy.
  • Reflector Arm: Fires spheres that bounce off walls and explode.
  • Shield Arm: Creates an energy shield to protect MegaMan from enemy attacks.
  • Shining Laser: The most powerful weapon in the Mega Man Legends series. Fires high-powered pseudo-laser beams. When fully upgraded, has unlimited energy and is strong enough to defeat bosses in few seconds.
  • Splash Mine: MegaMan plants a mine on the ground that explodes after some time or when touched. The mines can also harm Mega Man.
  • Spread Buster: Fires multiple explosives simultaneously, covering a wide range.
  • Vacuum Arm: A vacuum that sucks nearby Refractors, Energy Cubes and Special Weapon Recharge Cubes. Has no offensive power, being used to collect money.

Other

Standard Tactics: MegaMan Volnutt will use the weapon best suited for battle, most likely coming with the Shining Laser and maxed out buster cannon statistics.

Weaknesses: If Volnutt's body is almost completely destroyed, he has to reset all of his parameters in order to heal, restoring the body to its original configuration. If his data is corrupted, he will be incapable of coming back.

Note: Despite the X Buster being called a toy in the scan, this clearly can't be the case. The X Buster is used to make single-handedly the most powerful weapon in the game, a weapon so powerful that Roll notes it almost frightens her with how powerful this weapon is, conveniently only being stated when she makes a weapon mixed with the X Buster and no other weapon. Along with this, it can easily defeat all of the forms of the final boss of the game MegaMan Juno along with easily defeat Sera.

Note 2: Mega Man Legends takes place at the end of the timeline[5].

Trivia

  • In all Mega Man Legends games, MegaMan is said to be 14 years old, despite the second game taking place one year after the first.
  • In Mega Man Legends 2, MegaMan's armor is slightly different from the first game, the most notable change being the inclusion of an orange backpack as a permanent fixture and moving the silver knobs from the center of his shoulders out to the side. He also appeared with this design in Namco vs Capcom and Street Fighter × All Capcom, but usually appears using his design from the first game.
  • Except for the instruction manuals from the first two Mega Man Legends games, his name is consistently written as MegaMan instead of Mega Man in all of his appearances.
  • In the Mega Man Legends 2 ending credits, the voice cast uses his Japanese name.
  • His name is written as "Rock-Volnatto" in the Japanese Rockman DASH 2 instruction manuals.
  • Susan Roman, who voiced Amelia in the first Mega Man Legends, did the voice of MegaMan in Mega Man Legends 2, replacing Corey Sevier presumably due to his voice maturing since the first game.
  • In the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom manual, his name was miswritten as "MegaMan Volunutt" on page 30.
  • Though MegaMan wears his armor almost all the time, in the opening sequence of Mega Man Legends 2, he is shown without armor and wearing normal clothes.
  • Volnutt is one of two Mega Man incarnations to not appear in all installments of his series (the other one is Copy X, who isn't involved in half of "his" series and was only a copy of the original Mega Man X), though he has a cameo appearance in the ending of The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.
  • In the manual for Cannon Spike, the image of MegaMan Volnutt appears on the section related to Mega Man, even though the game actually features classic Mega Man, not Volnutt.
  • MegaMan Volnutt is the only Mega Man incarnation who is rarely seen with a helmet, with several artwork and crossover appearances depicting him without one. However, the player can equip one on him in both Legends games, and the North American and European box art of Mega Man Legends 2 shows him wearing one.
  • MegaMan Volnutt is the only Mega Man incarnation who doesn't explode upon death.[6] However, he was originally going to feature an explosive death while Mega Man Legends was under development, but was removed likely due to Volnutt being considered the most "human" Mega Man at the time.[7]
