Shiki Misaki

From The Codex
Revision as of 23:15, 16 March 2025 by GiverOfThePeace (talk | contribs)

Found one! You! Forge a pact with me! Listen! If we forge a pact, we can beat the Noise! You wanna be erased? Hurry up! There's no time! Make a pact with me! Please!
~ Shiki to Neku after first meeting him

He's right, Neku! Look... I know I hold you back. I'm not that good at psychs... But still! I want to win at this Game. And I want us to do it together! So tell me what you're thinking! I just want to understand you!
~ Shiki to Neku about wanting him to open up

Let's hear him out. Sometimes all people need is a good listener. We might even be able to solve his problem. If not, don't worry. I promise I'll say no.
~ Shiki to Neku on helping out 777

Aww... See how nice it is to have friends? Sure, you may butt heads now and then, but life is more fun that way. .... Neku... You don't lie to MAKE friends. I agree, that wouldn't be right. But sometimes, you need to tell a fib because you ARE friends. Not all secrets are bad secrets. Hey. Neku? Yesterday you said we were better off without friends. You really think so? Eri used to do everything for me. There was nothing she COULDN'T do. She had a ton of friends. Everybody at school loved her, because she was so outgoing. And the outfits she designed were so cute. Eri was the one who got me started making clothes. ...He's a CAT! Ugh. Anyway... She saw me making Mr. Mew. And then she said: "Wow, you're really good with a needle." So we got to talking, and she let me help her make clothes. I owe her everything. She gave me purpose. Meeting her, talking to her, getting to know her... Admiring her... It made me want to be something more. Rhyme said she didn't know what dreams are like. And now she never will... Neku, it's not fair.
~ Shiki to Neku about friends

...So what? There's no point. You heard what that Reaper said. ..... Even if I finish the mission... win the Game... Even if I come back to life... I'll still just be me. What do I do... ...... I thought I'd changed. But I'll never change. I'll just go on hurting. ...... I was never pretty... or smart... There was nothing special

about me at all. I hated myself. I wanted to change, to be somebody else. ...... To be Eri. But it didn't work.

~ Shiki to Neku after the end of day five

So now you know. ...... What my entry fee was. My appearance. I gave up the way I really look. This is Eri's body. I don't really look like this. When I got to the UG and I saw myself... I freaked. But it was a happy kind of freaked. Because this is what I always dreamed of-- a new me. I hated who I

was. All I wanted was to like myself. To be cute, and smart, and perfect... like Eri. At first... I didn't get it either. I was so excited to be Eri that I even acted like her-- all bubbly and cute. But it was just an act. Inside, nothing changed. I'm still the same person I've always been. Then I realized. I'll never be Eri. Deep down, I never wanted to be. I was just jealous. The Reaper was right. What I value most is ME! Eri has all the things I don't. Looks, brains, design sense. Lots of friends... I envied her. And now that I'm inside her body, it just hurts even more. The truth is, I'm scared! I keep trying to sound brave, saying we need to win the Game, but... I'm scared of getting a second chance! What if it's like the Reaper said? I don't want to come back to life it means being jealous of Eri all the time. ...... I don't want to be that person.

~ Shiki to Neku revealing that's not her actual body

I had no idea. I never knew she felt that way about me. Neku... You think I'm OK the way I am? He's a cat! Heh heh... Neku... I want to see Eri again. So we can be a team. I'm ready for a second chance!
~ Shiki to Neku after having her spirit reinvigorated

Finally...the end is in sight. It's been crazy, huh? Our time in the UG. But I learned something about myself-- how lucky I was. I took each day for granted. Woke up, went to school, talked to Eri. Came home, ate, watched TV. Then conked right out. It was so... NORMAL, I never thought of it as living. But this week woke me up, made me feel more alive... than I ever did when I really was. Yeah! Neku... Thanks for these last seven days. You're pretty good at this partner thing. You know it. Hey, if we make it through this... let's meet up in the RG. You, me, and Beat. You might not recognize me, so... I know! I'll bring Mr. Mew with me. We can be a team again! Heh heh. OK. Let's finish this!

Background

Shiki Misaki (美咲 四季 Misaki Shiki) is one of the main protagonists of The World Ends with You and a playable character. She is Neku Sakuraba's partner during his first week of the Reapers' Game. They start off not working together but overtime form a strong bond.

This dropdown contains the synopsis of Neku Sakuraba’s story. Read at your own risk as you may be spoiled otherwise!

Background
Shiki frequently spends time in Shibuya, suggesting she lives elsewhere in Tokyo. Her familiarity with the area, especially its fashion scene, is extensive. At some point, she attended Hachi Fest.

While crafting Mr. Mew, Shiki met Eri, a classmate who became her close friend. Feeling inferior to Eri's exceptional design skills, Shiki instead focused on bringing Eri’s concepts to life through sewing. This led her toward a passion for clothing creation. The two once took a photo together, which Shiki set as her phone wallpaper. She later reflected on how she had taken her daily routine for granted, seeing it as a repetitive cycle of school, spending time with Eri, and returning home.

One day, Shiki struggled to design a piece she was satisfied with. Eri tried to encourage her by saying she wasn’t meant to be a designer—believing instead that Shiki had a future as a renowned seamstress. However, Shiki misinterpreted this as an insult to her abilities. Realizing she had upset her, Eri planned to explain and apologize the next day, but tragedy struck first.

Shiki died in an unspecified accident, still believing Eri had belittled her talents. For the Reapers’ Game, she was forced to sacrifice her physical identity as her entry fee, awakening in the Underground with Eri’s appearance. Though initially shocked, she felt a surge of happiness at finally seeing herself as "pretty." Emulating Eri's bubbly and cheerful demeanor, she grew attached to her borrowed form. However, as the Game progressed, self-doubt resurfaced. She feared returning to her original self and, after Higashizawa taunted her jealousy, came to believe she would never change. Yet, her actions on Day 7 and in Week 3 suggest that much of her personality remained intact, indicating she may have underestimated her own strength.

First Week
Shiki is the first of the three partners Neku encounters at the start of the game when he runs into her at the Statue of Hachiko. She asks Neku to make a pact with her and explains the rules of the Reapers' Game, including how to form pacts and use battle pins. Though the game doesn’t explain how Shiki or the other players know the rules, she teaches Neku how to use his first set of pins. While Neku initially resists, Shiki remains supportive, guiding him through the game and teaching him the value of friendship. They work together to complete their first mission at 104.

On Day 2, Shiki meets Beat and Rhyme and makes friends with them, learning some useful tips. However, Neku’s antisocial behavior upsets Beat, leading them to part ways. At the end of the day, a Reaper named Uzuki Yashiro manipulates Neku into believing Shiki is a Reaper sent to spy on him. Despite Shiki’s pleas to the contrary, Neku erases her, but she is saved by Sanae Hanekoma, who later helps them understand the importance of teamwork.

On Day 3, Shiki and Neku find themselves in a dark concert hall. Despite Neku’s previous actions, Shiki doesn’t hold it against him, understanding he was simply playing the game as he knew it. She sympathizes with Neku’s memory loss and wishes he had confided in her sooner. Together, they defeat a giant bat Noise, and Neku becomes less hostile toward her.

On Day 4, Shiki introduces Neku to Shibuya’s fashion scene and talks about her love of design. However, she offends Neku by commenting on his clothing choices and fixing his button in a way that makes him uncomfortable. Later, when Rhyme is erased, Shiki is upset by Neku’s lack of visible emotion, leading her to question if he feels anything at all. They argue, with Neku insisting that Shiki isn’t his friend, calling her "inhuman."

On Day 5, Shiki apologizes to Neku for what she said and explains her belief that sometimes lies are necessary for the greater good. The two work together to help two girls, Ai and Mina, reconcile. When they meet the Game Master, Yodai Higashizawa, he mocks Shiki for her jealousy and suggests it will always be a problem for her. Neku realizes they are both dead, and the Reapers' Game is a trial for a chance to return to life.

On Day 6, Shiki becomes introspective, feeling inferior to her best friend, Eri. She loses her motivation to continue, but when she sees a girl who resembles her, it is revealed to be Eri. Shiki had forfeited her appearance as the entry fee for the game and had always envied Eri’s beauty and talents. She had spent the game trying to emulate Eri but found it left her feeling empty. Neku encourages Shiki to accept herself and stop comparing herself to Eri, reminding her that her identity is valuable. Shiki decides to focus on winning the game for herself.

By Day 7, Shiki learns that Eri values their friendship and regrets any past misunderstandings. Shiki no longer feels jealousy, and she regains her sense of purpose. With Neku’s support, she becomes more determined to succeed in the game.

On the final day, Shiki and Neku face the Game Master and defeat him. Shiki promises to wait for Neku at the Statue of Hachiko after the game ends. When Megumi Kitaniji reveals that only one of them can proceed, Shiki protests but Neku encourages her to leave and meet up with Eri. Shiki wonders if Neku will still be her friend after they return to life, but Neku reassures her. Shiki then leaves for the RG, only to be used as Neku’s entry fee for his next Game.

Second Week
Shiki is absent during the second week of the game, as she is used as Neku's entry fee for that week. Despite this, she remains a significant influence on Neku's determination to win the Reapers' Game. Throughout the second week, Neku frequently mentions Shiki to Joshua and to Beat, reflecting her continued impact on his resolve to succeed.

Third Week
Shiki regains consciousness at the Shibuya River on the final day of the third week, following Neku's victory over Konishi. Since she was Neku's entry fee, she returns to the Underground. Neku and Beat, on their way to find the Composer, pass through as part of their journey after disqualifying themselves by breaking the rules. While at the Reapers' hideout, Kitaniji activates the Red Skull pin Shiki had acquired during the Game, and without her Player Pin, she is controlled.

Shiki is forced to fight alongside Neku and Beat against Kitaniji. In the DS version, she uses her standard attacks with Mr. Mew to attack Beat. After Neku defeats the Conductor, Shiki continues to fight, sending multiple Mr. Mews at him. She is stopped by Beat, who is knocked out in the process. Seizing the opportunity, Neku cuts her Red Skull pin, causing Shiki to lose consciousness along with Beat. Neku then proceeds to confront the Composer alone. Shiki and Beat recover shortly afterward and follow Neku, arriving just in time to help him face Kitaniji again.

The trio joins forces to fight the Conductor. Joshua then appears, being forcibly merged with the Conductor, and takes Beat and Shiki. However, the three partners sync up with Neku, boosting his strength enough to defeat the Conductor and free them. Soon after, Joshua reveals himself as the Composer, but decides to spare Shibuya. The group reunites at Hachiko, where they share a joyful moment together.

A New Day
In A New Day, a fake version of Shiki, created by Coco, appears as a player in Expert Mode. She teams up with Rhyme, and there are no noticeable differences from the Shiki seen in the first game. This false Shiki still retains Eri's appearance, leading Neku and Shiki to wonder why her entry fee was once again her appearance. Shiki suggests that it may be due to her admiration of Eri, but Neku counters by pointing out that Shiki envied Eri, which the "fake" Shiki dismisses as forgetting. After Rhyme is erased during their mission, Shiki disappears after the battle.

The real Shiki calls Neku after he escapes Coco's Shibuya. She mentions that one of Mr. Mew's seams ripped and that it felt like something bad was happening. The two agree to go shopping later to buy materials so they can stitch up Mr. Mew.

NEO: The World Ends With You
Before the events of NEO, Shiki co-founded the Gatto Nero fashion brand with Eri, serving as its designer. She was deeply upset when Neku mysteriously disappeared. Though she is not seen much in Shibuya during the game, Coco mentions that Shiki has been occupied with her work, keeping her away for most of the time.

On the final day of Week 3, Shiki is contacted on short notice to repair Tsugumi Matsunae's Mr. Mew, which was damaged during her prior encounter with the Wicked Twisters. Since Tsugumi cannot transfer her Soul back to her body without it being repaired, Shiki helps with the restoration. After Tsugumi is restored, Shiki continues to support Neku, Beat, and the Wicked Twisters, cheering them on as they prepare for the final battle against the Dissonance. Although she cannot see Neku directly, she tells Beat that she can sense him, as he had not physically died. When the Wicked Twisters defeat Phoenix Cantus and save Shibuya, Neku is revived, and he and Shiki share an emotional reunion at the Hachiko statue.

Personality

  • Creative and Ambitious: Shiki is a talented seamstress with a passion for fashion design. She creates her own clothing and her beloved stuffed cat doll, Mr. Mew. Her attention to detail is exceptional, as shown when she quickly notices and repairs a loose button on Neku's shorts. Shiki's love for fashion is tied to her dream of becoming a designer, a goal she later achieves with Eri by launching their clothing brand, Gatto Nero, which becomes a massive success in Shibuya.
  • Compassionate and Affable: Shiki is deeply kind and empathetic, always looking for ways to help others. Her optimism and willingness to assist others serve as a catalyst for Neku’s transformation. She frequently suggests using their abilities to aid people, such as purging Noise or freeing individuals overwhelmed by negativity. Despite the competitive nature of the Reapers’ Game, she eagerly works with Beat and Rhyme, quickly forming friendships with them due to her warm and affable nature.
  • Loyal and Forgiving: Shiki’s loyalty is unwavering, even in the face of betrayal or hardship. She remains steadfastly by Neku’s side, forgiving him when he tries to erase her and even blaming herself for his actions. This loyalty extends to her friendship with Eri, despite her deep-seated jealousy and their final argument before Eri’s death. Shiki’s loyalty is further demonstrated by her three-year wait to reunite with Neku after the events of the original game.
  • Observant and Resourceful: Shiki’s keen eye for detail makes her both insightful and practical. She picks up on small details others overlook, such as Rhyme's pendant, and she excels at solving problems, like finding an exit in A-East or influencing decisions in the Realground. Her observant nature also fuels her interest in people-watching and appreciating the diversity of Shibuya.
  • Struggles with Self-Worth: Beneath her cheerful demeanor, Shiki struggles with deep-seated self-doubt and feelings of inferiority, particularly in comparison to Eri. Her lack of self-esteem leads her to view herself as unworthy and unremarkable, and she blames herself when others, like Neku, lash out at her. Shiki’s self-loathing reaches a peak on Day 6 of the Reapers’ Game, when she becomes so despondent that she no longer sees the point of trying to survive.
  • Personal Growth and Acceptance: After opening up to Neku about her insecurities, Shiki gradually learns to embrace her own identity. Reassured by Neku’s encouragement and hearing how much Eri values her, Shiki resolves to stop comparing herself to others and to live life as her true self. By the end of the Reapers' Game, she is more confident and determined to move forward, having found a sense of self-worth.
  • Alternate Personality in Another Day: In Another Day, Shiki is an avid Tin Pin Slammer player and joins Neku in investigating stolen pins during the Tin Pin Tournament. Although she appears as Eri in this alternate universe, it is revealed that this is merely how the player perceives her, and her real-world appearance remains unchanged. Her portrayal in this bonus chapter reflects the lighthearted nature of the alternate universe.

Relationships

Neku Sakuraba

Neku at first starts off as an overall jerk being a jerk to Shiki despite her trying to be nice to him[1], though he gets called out for how he's acting with her, ultimately admitting he needs to work together with her as a partner[2]. Shiki even notes that she won't go anywhere without Neku[3]. As he starts talking to her more about her future ambitions, he learns how he didn't give her enough credit[4]. After learning about the truth regarding her body, Shiki being scared to get a second chance fearing she'll come back to life just to be jealous of Eri all the time Neku confesses that he likes her the way she is[5]. Later he talks her out of her funk telling her that she's her own person and to live for herself[6]. Right before facing the Game Master they both have a small talk between each other where Shiki thanked him for the seven days claiming he was a pretty good partner asking to meet up with him in RG[7]. Neku even ends up using her real name for the first time after they defeat Yodai Higashizawa[8]. After re-awakening in the second week, Neku notes he has to now win this game for Shiki's sake and his[9]. Their bond became so strong that once Shiki was decided to be the one to come back to RG, she protested against it claiming that Neku deserves to be the one to be brought back to life, with Neku telling Shiki that he'll be fine, convincing her to go back to the realground, with Neku promising to still be her friend even when he sees the real her[10]. Neku's bond with Shiki is so strong that she becomes his new entry fee for the second week of the Reapers Game[11]. Shiki also acts as an influence on Neku, being willing to hear someone out with their problems from remembering what Shiki told him about how people sometimes need a good listener[12].

Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu

Shiki and Joshua do not interact much, though Joshua lets Neku return to RG, noting to not keep Shiki waiting any longer[13].

Daisukenojo "Beat" Bito

Although Beat initially mistakes Neku and Shiki for Reapers on Day 2, they quickly form a bond. Beat and Rhyme offer advice on using their mobile phones and provide tips on navigating the Reapers' Game. On Day 3, Beat suggests they team up to help each other win, which Shiki enthusiastically agrees to. When Rhyme is erased, Shiki becomes deeply concerned for Beat's wellbeing, wondering what will happen to him. They don't reunite until the final day of Week 3, when Shiki is 'restored' after Konishi is defeated. She is happy to see both Beat and Neku again.

In the game's ending, Shiki is seen running to meet Beat, Rhyme, and Neku at Hachiko, joining them for a high-five.

In NEO, Beat mentions that he told Shiki and Rhyme to stay out of the UG, implying that the two have remained friends over the past three years. When Shiki appears on the final day, their lighthearted interaction further suggests they have stayed close during their time in the RG.

Raimu "Rhyme" Bito

Shiki and Rhyme quickly became friends on Day 2 after meeting, along with Beat. On Day 4, Shiki asks Rhyme about her pendant, which Rhyme reveals was a gift from her brother. Shiki recognizes the pendant as very rare and praises Rhyme's brother for obtaining it, unaware that the brother is Beat, as Rhyme doesn't remember either. When Rhyme is erased on Day 4, Shiki is deeply upset.

Eri

Shiki shares a close friendship with Eri, and the two bonded over making clothes together. However, Shiki became envious of Eri's looks, popularity, and design talent, which fueled her jealousy and influenced her appearance in the Reaper's Game, as well as Higashizawa's interest in her. On Day 6, Shiki and Neku discover that Eri held as much respect and admiration for Shiki as Shiki had for her.

In the anime, Shiki tries to comfort Eri by wiping away her tears as Eri mourns Shiki's absence. She reassures Eri that she'll return, but sadly, Eri can't hear or feel her. During Week 2, Eri is seen buying flowers for Shiki's grave, which she frequently visits.

In NEO, Eri and Shiki co-founded the clothing brand Gatto Nero. Shiki is often away for business, which is why she's absent for most of the events in NEO.

This makes players unnoticeable to all people in main reality[51], not being able to be seen or head[52] being able to polish a statue in the middle of a busy street without anyone noticing[53]. They only appear visible in areas marked with special Reaper decals[54]), Contract Bestowal (Players can forge pacts with other players in order to take on the Noise, causing a light show when they forge allowing them to use pins to attack with their partner[55]), Telepathy (Player's natural pins enable them to hear voices inside of their head hearing the voices of many due to the pins[56]. Players can also focus in on a target to fully read what they're thinking about[57]), Information Analysis (The pins also give players a scanning ability allowing them to hear the voices of people around him[58]. Noted that coming into contact with the Noise invokes the feeling of being "spirited away" as they battle on a unique plane[74]. Where players can chain a total of five of them before being forcibly warped into the combat zone[75]), Erasure (Metaphysical Erasure; Those erased within the Gme disperse the mind and spirit housed within their flesh in the form of Soul, where they are only erased from visible existence, their Soul persists in the UG until gathered and tied together according to a new code[76])
Resistance to Noise Possession (Players can have Noise possess them[77], and can even have multiple Noise possess them without facing any adverse effects[78]). This includes: Possession (The Noise can possess objects and curse them[79]), Absorption (If a player fails to defeat a Noise in the unique plane, the Noise will absorb them into itself, essentially being stuck in that Noise dimension forever[80]), Curse Manipulation The noise are responsible for curses where erasing them is required to lift curses[81])
Superhuman Physical Characteristics (Pacts enable players to be able to fight and harm the Noise, where it's noted without a pact they would not be able to harm them[82]), Accelerated Development (Battling, Pin Stats & Abilities; Noted by Shiki that the pins a player wears will get stronger from fighting[83]. Neku can take on an entire group of Reapers who have[84] their Outlet Pins equipped[85] where Outlet Pins enhance Reapers battle performance[86], making reapers dozens of times more powerful than usual[87]. Reapers are considered far stronger then players where they can erase them in a second[88], with the idea of a player trying to fight them being laughable[89], meaning Neku has grown beyond even regular players in strength), Threat Avoidance (Players that have made a pact will no longer have the Noise come after them[90]), Non-Standard Interaction (Abstract Interaction & Nonexistent Interaction; Players can fight and interact with the Noise while they naturally exist in imaginary number planes a parallel plane a fraction away from the world Noise inhabit[91]), Abstract Movement (Players can fight and move around in imaginary number planes a parallel plane a fraction away from the world Noise inhabit[92]), Summoning (Players with pacts can summon their partner's into battle due to their partner's special pin[93]), Erasure (When players forge a pact with another player and defeat Noise, they can erase them[94]), Bypassing (Through syncing attacks, Players are able to harm Black Noise who cannot be harmed by standard attacks[95]), Fusionism (Players can sync with their partners to fuse their energies together[96]), Empathic Manipulation (Players through putting on brands and getting into combat makes those brands more popular[97]).

Resistance to Noise Attacks (Pacts enable players to be able to fight and harm the Noise, where it's noted without a pact they would not be able to harm them[98], along with this they can also take hits from the Nose without facing any adverse effects). This includes:

Erasure (Metaphysical Erasure; The Noise can cause players to instantly vanish upon touching or attacking them[99]. The Noise erased Rhyme making her soul another speck of Shibuya space dust[100]), Abstract Manipulation & Soul Manipulation (The Noise devour one's Soul to increase their own numbers[101], where Soul is an abstract matter found in all phenomena, being cognitive energy[102])

Human Achievements (Shiki has been studying fashion bit by bit so she can be a designer one day[103]. Shiki has always liked to sew, starting with little things like stuffed animals[104]. Shiki made her own stuffed cat and her own clothes by herself[105]. After the events of The World Ends With You, Shiki created a famous brand known as "Gatto Nero", being the most popular brand[106]), Acrobatics (Leaped an incredible height from the show floor all the way to the ceiling[107]. Quickly fixed Neku's button coming off his shorts with Neku even noting that was fast[108]), Extrasensory Perception (Shiki can feel Neku's presence even while he's stuck in UG while Rhyme is not able to feel his presence at all[109] despite her being able to see Beat[110] despite her being in Realground while Beat is in Underground[111]), Healing (Shiki heals some of her health when performing Fusion[112]), Statistics Boost (Depending on the clothes one wears in an area in Shibuya if it matches with the popular brand chart, it will grant the player an attack bonus in combat[113]), Dimensional Travel (Travel among countless parallel worlds that exist within the RG or UG is possible through the use of Imagination, theoretically anyone can jump to a prallel world, but the penetrating the membrane between worlds requires up-tuning one's vibe[114]), Familiar Summoning (Shiki reveals that she's not really moving Mr. Mew, he ust sort of does his own thing[115]), Luck Manipulation (With Neku and Shiki's fusion[116], activates a card wizardry where if they tap the cards with the same symbols, increasing damage and boosting drop rate as they get correct cards[117]), Duplication (She can control Mr. Mew to duplicate into many different Mr. Mews to attack the opponent[118]).

Resistance to Erasure (Metaphysical Erasure; Can take hits from the noise without being erased[119], whereas other players instantly get erased by the noise[120])

Equipment

Mr. Mew

Mr. Mew is Shiki's familiar that she uses in combat, she can control it to do various attacks, multiply, and even grow as big as a skyscraper with a fully powered level 3 fusion attack.

Notable Techniques

Cross Combos

Cross combos are attacks where Neku and his partner alternate attacks between each other[128]. Cross combos cause the sync rate to rise, which once the SYNC reaches 100% the Fusion Pin can be utilized. Unleashing a powerful attack that hits all enemies at once. Cross Combos also act as a secret weapon against enemies that don't respond to normal attacks[129].

Other

Standard Tactics: Shiki utilizes Mr. Mew in her attacks, along with strategizing.

Weaknesses

Note

Trivia

Shiki laughing while listening to her phone
  • Shiki was originally conceived to be Neku's rival as the leader of an opposing team (similar to Kanon Tachibana) instead of his partner, but her role received a major rewrite. Her weapon was also once darts, but this was scrapped because children playing the game might imitate her[152].
    • There are some screenshots of the version with darts in a Japanese magazine in which they appear to require pins to use.[153][154] The images for the dart pins still exist in the game's files.[155].
  • At the end of a battle, Shiki will hold her phone to her ear. This is strange as there is no one to call in the UG. It's possible that she is listening to music on it, but she can be seen dialing, and every few seconds she shakes as though with laughter.
  • Shiki is Neku's only partner to not largely go by a nickname (although Neku calls her "Stalker" before getting to know her).
  • Shiki's success with Gatto Nero may be due in part to her having won the Reapers' Game. It is stated in the Secret Reports that creations of Players who have won the Game have an immense affect on society due to the high Imagination of a winning Player[156].
  • Although Shiki's favorite brand appears to be D+B based off her liked threads, this brand seems more reflective of Eri's style than her own. Her Stuffed Animal is also acquired from D+B Molco, although the Mr. Mew Suit can be acquired from Natural Puppy, which may be more indicative of Shiki's actual preferred brand.
  • Shiki's appearance doesn't change into her real appearance in This Day Ends with You!, despite not being in the Reapers' Game. When Neku talks to Joshua, he tells a parable about people's visions being filtered by their desired realty. He gives an example of "a certain young lady still look[ing] like somebody else," claiming that Neku has a filtered view on Shiki's look[157]. He also later comments that it would be a waste to create assets that would only be used once[158].
  • Shiki's nickname in Another Day, "Green" is said by Joshua to be based on the color of her skirt. However, it also reflects her true form's main color (the green jacket).
  • As of NEO: The World Ends With You, Shiki's official color appears to be green, and she is the only character to have her official color be the same as her Another Day codename. During the official TWEWY PR twitter account's character reveals, she is represented by the "paw prints" (🐾) emoji.
  • A NEO guidebook reveals her birthday is October 12th. Based on a sign in the Shibukyu Main Store battle arena that reads "10/8", it is possible TWEWY takes place around October 8th- just a few days before Shiki's birthday. While this may not be the intention of the developers as "10/8" can also be read as August 10th, it may suggest she missed her birthday in the RG while deceased.
    • October 12th is also the western release date for The World Ends With You: Final Remix.
  • Shiki and Neku placed seventh on Nintendo Power's list of gaming's top couples in their February 2011 issue.
  • The entirety of Shiki's real face is left unseen until NEO: The World Ends with You. All official depictions of her Realground appearance before the release of the sequel never showed anything above the bottom half of her glasses. Even the final episode of the anime adaptation, which aired a month before the game's release, did the same as the original 2007 title, saving the reveal until NEO.
  • In NEO, a mistranslation in the English version has Shiki state she doesn't know if Neku can see her, despite having been a Player herself and therefore aware the RG is visible from the UG. Her actual line in Japanese is that she can't see Neku.
  • Shiki was designed by Miki Yamashita in NEO: The World Ends With You. In the concept arts from official artbook, she is shown wearing Eri's fanny pack, instead of her Mr. Mew purse seen in the final version - however, she is still wearing what appears to be Eri's ring on her pinky finger in her final design. Other concept arts include minor changes, such as her one-piece white dress having a white hoodie.
  • Yamashita has stated that Shiki was designed to look "fashionable in her own right, though not yet sophisticated" and that her style of dress hasn't changed since the previous game, but was made more modern[159].

Explanations

The following is an explanation of the various status effects of The World Ends With You

Status Effects
image Name Effect
Immobility Immobility incapacitates the target, preventing any actions such as movement, attacking, or using pins, unless the pins are specifically designed to cure it. While immobilized, the target remains vulnerable to damage. It is symbolized by a white square with black lines.
HP Drain HP Drain gradually reduces the target's HP as a percentage of their maximum health. This effect excludes Noise attacks intended to deplete HP, like those involving jelly grabs. The icon is a white square with circular shapes.
Attack Break Attack Break cuts the target's offensive power in half. Several pins, such as Pavo Real's Poison Skull and Rapier Glance, Mus Rattus' Cornered Rat, and Hip Snake's Eyes Full of Hope and Eyes Full of Light, trigger this effect. It is represented by a white square featuring an 'A' inside a red arrow.
Defense Break Defense Break reduces the target's defense by half. The icon used is a white square with a 'D' inside a blue arrow.
Stun Stun, also known as "flinching," is a temporary status where the player or Noise cannot act for a brief moment after taking significant damage. Some Noise might be immune to this effect, while Neku and his allies will avoid flinching from minimal damage.
Knock-Back Knock-Back is triggered when an attack causes the player or Noise to be pushed backward. Neku and his partner will likely fall to the ground, but Noise are only thrown backward. This effect is similar to Stun, but with the added movement.
Airborne Airborne, or "knock-up," occurs when the player or a Noise is sent into the air by an attack. Neku and his partner will likely fall afterward, but Noise are only pushed back. This status can be exploited by Neku to juggle enemies.

We Angels do not consider it a loss if a talented Player elects to return to the Realground, as their superior Imagination will inspire other humans.
Upon returning to life, the exceptional Player's creative activities soon make their mark upon society. His art, music, and other output become a part of culture, spreading and persisting through time, refining people's Imagination even without personal contact with the Player.

Joshua: Say, did you know? We all perceive the world around us differently, filtered through the lens of our desired reality.
Neku: Huh!? (Is this kid high?)
Joshua: So if you're wondering why a certain young lady still looks like somebody else... it's because you refuse to perceive her as she really is.
    Neku: Young lady?
Joshua: The only thing stopping you from seeing what she really looks like... is you. So you see, it's your fault.
Neku: I need to look harder?
Joshua: That's right. Let go of your preconceptions.
  158. This Day Ends with You! (Another Day)
Joshua: When you're drowning in a sea of work with not enough time, why pour your soul into assets that get used all of... what, once? Really. Have some compassion.
